  8. keep these Bible Stories going. Your soul was not in

  9. a place, it was in a person's knowing. That is

  10. the answer Scripture gives. There was no waiting room in heaven,

  11. there was no earlier life you finished and forgot. Before

  12. God formed you, there was no you at all. What

  13. existed was God, and God's thought of you, and God's

  14. love set on you before you had a face to love.

  15. Most of us would rather hear that we have always

  16. existed somewhere, But the Bible offers something better than that.

  17. It offers a beginning that came from the hands of

  18. God himself, and a love that was already in motion

  19. before you took up any space in this world. If

  20. you have ever felt like an accident, like your birth

  21. was a complication in somebody else's plan, then hold on

  22. to this. You did not come from nowhere. You came

  23. from God, and the God who gave you your first

  24. breath has not once looked away since. So, let us

  25. open the Bible and see what it actually says about

  26. the beginning of a human being. Notice what the Bible

  27. never does. It never tells you where your soul was stored.

  28. There is no chapter describing souls gathered in a heavenly room,

  29. no verse about waiting your turn, no description of what

  30. you saw before you came. For a book that speaks

  31. so freely about heaven, angels, the throne of God and

  32. the world to come, that silence is loud. Scripture is

  33. not shy. If souls lived somewhere before birth, we would

  34. have been told. Instead, every time the Bible touches the

  35. beginning of a person, it turns the question around. It

  36. stops asking where and starts asking whose. The answer is

  37. always the same. You came from God. You belong to God.

  38. The life in you was handed to you. As you

  39. do not know the way the Spirit comes to the

  40. bones in the womb of a woman with child, so

  41. you do not know the work of God, who makes everything.

  42. Ecclesiastes 11.5 That is Scripture admitting out loud that nobody

  43. understands how life arrives in a body. The wisest man

  44. in Israel looked at a pregnant woman and said, I

  45. cannot explain what is happening in there. God is at work,

  46. and the work is hidden. There is real freedom in

  47. that sentence. When someone tells you they know exactly what

  48. your soul was doing before you were born, they know

  49. more than Solomon did. But hiddenness is not absence. The

  50. same book that says you cannot trace how the spirit

  51. comes to the bones also tells you where it comes

  52. from and where it goes. and the dust returns to

  53. the earth as it was, and the Spirit returns to

  54. God who gave it. Ecclesiastes chapter 12 verse 7 Look

    Ecclesiastes 12:7

  55. at the word gave. A gift returning to its giver

  56. is a different picture than a traveler going home to

  57. a place he remembers. Your spirit did not sit in

  58. God's presence, get handed a body, and go down. Your

  59. spirit was given. Given means there was a moment when

  60. you had nothing, because there was no you yet, and

  61. then God gave, and you were. That single word protects

  62. us from a lot of confusion. It also settles something

  63. in the heart. If your life was given, then your

  64. life is held. Nobody gives a gift carelessly and then

  65. forgets it. Here is the passage almost nobody brings into

  66. this conversation, and it changes the shape of the question.

  67. The writer of Hebrews is arguing that the priesthood of

  68. Melchizedek was greater than the priesthood of Levi. His proof

  69. is strange to modern ears. Abraham met Melchizedek and gave

  70. him a tenth of everything. Levi was Abraham's great-grandson, generations

  71. from being born. And yet the writer says this. One

  72. might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid

  73. tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins

  74. of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. Hebrews chapter 7

    Hebrews 7:9

  75. verses 9 and 10. Levi was somewhere that day. He

  76. was in Abraham. That is how the Bible speaks about

  77. a person before birth, carried in the body of a

  78. father who had not yet had a son. To the

  79. Hebrew mind, descendants were already present in an ancestor, the

  80. way an oak is present in an acorn, without a

  81. single branch existing yet. So if you want a biblical

  82. answer to where you were 300 years ago, here it is.

  83. You were in your ancestors. You were in a line

  84. of people who worked and married and buried their dead,

  85. most of whose names you will never learn, stretching back

  86. through every generation to the first man God made from

  87. the ground. That is the only address Scripture ever gives you,

  88. and it is more meaningful than a heavenly waiting room

  89. would be because it ties you to the human story

  90. rather than lifting you out of it. Paul uses the

  91. same logic when he writes that in Adam all die.

  92. You were in Adam. His fall reached you before you

  93. had a name, which is why the whole race is

  94. broken in the same way. It is also the reason

  95. the rescue had to come the way it did, through

  96. a man who entered the same line and did not fall.

  97. There is comfort buried in this for anyone who has

  98. felt like the wrong branch of a bad family tree.

  99. you were carried by people who never knew they were

  100. carrying you god worked through generations of ordinary and imperfect

  101. lives to bring you here whatever your parents were whatever

  102. your grandparents were the line held long enough for you

  103. to arrive that was not luck Think about how much

  104. had to hold. Famines came and people survived them. Wars

  105. swept through villages and someone walked out. Two people who

  106. had no idea you were coming met and stayed long

  107. enough for one more generation. Every single link in that

  108. chain had to hold and none of them knew what

  109. they were holding. The Bible gives us long lists of

  110. names that most readers skip, and those lists are the

  111. record of exactly this. God moving a family through centuries,

  112. mostly through people nobody remembers, so that a promise could

  113. arrive at the right moment in the right town. Your

  114. line is not written down in Scripture, but it was

  115. not invisible to God either. He has been working with

  116. families a long time. To see how a person actually begins,

  117. we go back to the second chapter of Genesis, to

  118. the closest look Scripture ever gives us at the making

  119. of a human being. Then the Lord God formed the

  120. man of dust from the ground and breathed into his

  121. nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a

  122. living creature. Genesis chapter 2 verse 7. Three movements in

    Genesis 2:7

  123. one sentence. God forms. God breathes. The man becomes. Now

  124. look at what is missing. God does not bring a

  125. soul from somewhere else and put it inside. There is

  126. no delivery. There is dust. There is breath. And out

  127. of the joining comes a living being who did not

  128. exist a moment before. The Hebrew word here that older

  129. Bibles translate as living soul simply means a living, breathing creature.

  130. Genesis does not say the man received a soul the

  131. way a man receives a coat. It says the man

  132. became one. Body and breath together, joined by God, make

  133. a person. That is why the question, where was your soul,

  134. contains a small mistake inside it. The question assumes the

  135. soul is a thing that travels, that has luggage and

  136. a root. In Scripture, your soul is what you are

  137. once God has given you life. Before the giving, there

  138. is nothing to locate, and that breath is the important part. Job,

  139. sitting in ashes with everything gone, still knew where his

  140. life came from. The Spirit of God has made me,

  141. and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33.4

  142. Present tense. Gives, not gave once and left. The breath

  143. in your chest right now is being handed to you

  144. this minute by God. This is why every human life

  145. carries weight that no achievement adds to, and no failure removes.

  146. You are not a machine that happened to switch on,

  147. you are dust that God breathed into. A body without

  148. that breath is a grave, and breath without a body

  149. is not a person yet, and God is the one

  150. who holds the two together for as long as He chooses.

  151. The prophet Zechariah gathers all of this into one line.

  152. He calls God the one who stretched out the heavens,

  153. founded the earth, and formed the spirit of man within him.

  154. The same hands that unrolled the night sky worked in

  155. the dark of a womb to make you. Same God,

  156. same care, and one of those two works was aimed

  157. directly at you. God forms the spirit of man within him, within,

  158. not somewhere else, and then delivered. The forming happens inside

  159. the person, the way a craftsman shapes something that did

  160. not exist before his hands touched it. The letter to

  161. the Hebrews gives God a title that carries the same weight.

  162. It calls him the Father of Spirits. Your parents gave

  163. you a body and a name and whatever they had

  164. to give. Behind them stands the one who gave the

  165. life itself. That is why you can honor the people

  166. who raised you without needing them to have been the

  167. source of your worth, and why you can grieve the

  168. people who failed you without concluding that your life was

  169. a mistake. They were never the ones who decided whether

  170. you should exist. There is one verse that settles this

  171. question in a single line, and it appears in a

  172. chapter most people read for a completely different reason. Paul

  173. is writing to the Corinthians about resurrection bodies. He compares

  174. the first man with Christ, the earthly with the heavenly,

  175. and then he states the order God works in. But

  176. it is not the spiritual that is first, but the natural,

  177. and then the spiritual. 1 Corinthians 15.46 Natural first, spiritual after.

  178. Paul is talking about resurrection, but the principle he states

  179. is the pattern of everything God does with human beings.

  180. He does not begin with a spirit and then find

  181. it a body. He begins with the earthy, ordinary, physical thing,

  182. and then he brings the spiritual. That is the order

  183. in creation, when dust came before breath. It is the

  184. order in salvation when you were born once in the

  185. flesh before you could be born of the Spirit, and

  186. it is the order in resurrection when the body that

  187. was buried is the body that will be raised. If

  188. souls came first and bodies second, Paul had the perfect

  189. chapter to say so, and he says the opposite. This

  190. matters for more than settling an argument. It tells you

  191. that God is not embarrassed by your body. A lot

  192. of people carry a quiet belief that the real them

  193. is a spirit trapped in flesh, and that the aches,

  194. the tiredness, the failing eyes, the slowing hands are the cage.

  195. Scripture never treats you that way. God made the dust

  196. first and called it good, and when he came to

  197. save us, he did not send a message. He took

  198. a body. So the weakness you feel is not proof

  199. that you are less spiritual. It is the honest condition

  200. of a creature made from the ground and kept alive

  201. by borrowed breath. God knows exactly what you are made of.

  202. He is the one who chose the material. Nobody watched

  203. you being formed. That is the strangest thing about your

  204. own beginning. The most important construction project of your life

  205. happened where no human eye could reach, and every detail

  206. of it went unrecorded by anyone who loved you. except one.

  207. David could not sleep, and out of that long night

  208. came the most personal passage in the Bible about the

  209. making of a human being. For you formed my inward parts,

  210. you knitted me together in my mother's womb. Psalm 139.13

  211. Knitting is slow, close work. It is done by hand,

  212. one loop pulled through another, with the whole pattern held

  213. in the mind of the one working. That is the

  214. picture David reaches for, and he keeps going. He says

  215. his frame was not hidden from God when he was

  216. made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

  217. Then comes the line that answers our question better than

  218. any other verse in Scripture. Your eyes saw my unformed substance.

  219. In your book were written every one of them, the

  220. days that were formed for me, when as yet there

  221. was none of them. Psalm 139.16 Read what David actually claims.

  222. God's eyes saw him when he was unformed substance before

  223. he had a shape. What God watched was a body

  224. in its earliest stage of becoming, hidden from everyone else

  225. in the world and already fully seen by him. And

  226. then the days, written in a book before a single

  227. one of them arrived. David did not exist yet, but

  228. David was not unaccounted for. There was a record before

  229. there was a man. Job says something similar out of

  230. his suffering. You clothed me with skin and flesh, and

  231. knit me together with bones and sinews. You have granted

  232. me life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved

  233. my spirit. Job chapter 10 verses 11 and 12 preserved, guarded,

    Job 10:11

  234. watched over, like something entrusted to careful hands. Job was

  235. arguing with God at the time, and even in the

  236. middle of the argument, he could not deny that his

  237. life had been handled with care from the beginning. The

  238. parts of your life that nobody saw are not the

  239. parts God missed. He started with the part nobody saw.

  240. If God was attentive in a place where you could

  241. not even ask for help, where you had no words

  242. and no awareness and no ability to earn one moment

  243. of his attention, then his attention to you has never

  244. once depended on your performance. What about the ones whose

  245. lives barely started? The pregnancy that ended in the tenth week,

  246. or the baby who lived four days, or the grandchild

  247. who was named and prayed for and never came home?

  248. If a person begins when God gives life, then those

  249. children were persons. That truth cuts both ways, and I

  250. know it. It means the loss was a real loss,

  251. and not a medical event, which is exactly what grieving

  252. parents have always known in their bones, while people around

  253. them searched for lighter words. But it also means those

  254. lives were not empty. David wrote that his days were

  255. written in God's book before one of them existed. He

  256. did not say a certain number of days had to

  257. pass before God started counting. Scripture gives one moment where

  258. a man speaks openly about a child who died in infancy,

  259. and it is King David. He had spent seven days

  260. on the ground, refusing food, begging God for the boy's life.

  261. When the child died, his servants were afraid to tell him.

  262. David heard them whispering, asked directly, and then did something

  263. nobody expected. He got up, washed, worshipped, and ate, and

  264. he explained why. But now he is dead. Why should

  265. I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall

  266. go to him, but he will not return to me.

  267. 2 Samuel 12, verse 23. I shall go to him.

    2 Samuel 12:23

  268. That is not a man talking about a grave. That

  269. is a father saying his child is somewhere and that

  270. he is going there. David does not give us a

  271. full doctrine of what happens to children who die. This

  272. is one of the secret things. But he gives us

  273. the direction his hope pointed, and it pointed forward toward

  274. a reunion in the confidence that God is good and

  275. that his son was safe with him. If you are

  276. the one who has been carrying that grief, hear this much.

  277. The child you lost was never merely potential. God saw

  278. an unformed substance and knew a person. Nothing about that

  279. life was wasted, and nothing about it escaped his notice,

  280. and your years of quiet aching over someone almost nobody

  281. else remembers are known to him too. Before I formed

  282. you in the womb, I knew you, and before you

  283. were born, I consecrated you. I appointed you a prophet

  284. to the nations. Jeremiah chapter 1 verse 5 Many people

    Jeremiah 1:5

  285. read that and picture a soul standing in front of God,

  286. waiting to be sent. But watch the sentence itself. Before

  287. I formed you in the womb. The forming happens in

  288. the womb. What came before the forming was not Jeremiah.

  289. It was God's knowing of Jeremiah. And the knowing is

  290. the heart of it. The word behind new is the

  291. word Scripture uses for the deepest closeness between two people,

  292. the knowing that carries love and commitment and belonging inside it.

  293. God is describing a heart already turned toward a boy

  294. who did not exist. Isaiah says it even more tenderly.

  295. The Lord called me first. the womb, from the body

  296. of my mother he named my name. Isaiah chapter 49

    Isaiah 49:1

  297. verse 1. God named the name before there was a

  298. mouth to answer to it. Now, Jeremiah was a prophet

  299. with a particular calling, and so was the servant in Isaiah.

  300. We should not turn their commission into a claim that

  301. every person was handed a career before birth. But the

  302. character of God on display in those verses does not

  303. change from person to person. The God who set his

  304. heart on Jeremiah before Jeremiah existed is the same God

  305. who was thinking of you before there was anything of

  306. you to think about. That is where love always begins.

  307. Ask any mother who prayed for a child for years.

  308. She loved a person who did not exist yet. When

  309. the child finally came, the love did not start, it

  310. simply found its object. Love that reaches ahead of the

  311. beloved is the oldest kind of love there is, and

  312. God has more of it than anyone. So when you

  313. feel forgotten, the question worth asking is not whether God

  314. noticed you. He was there before there was anything to notice.

  315. He watched something take shape that only He could see,

  316. and He wanted it. If the Bible is this clear,

  317. why do so many people believe the opposite? Why does

  318. the idea that our souls are ancient feel almost obvious?

  319. Because something in us knows we do not belong entirely

  320. to this world. That instinct is real, and Scripture does

  321. not laugh at it. People say they feel like old souls.

  322. They walk into a place they have never been, and

  323. something in them says home. They meet a stranger and

  324. feel they have known them for years. Those feelings are

  325. not evidence of an earlier life. They are evidence that

  326. you were made for God and for a world that

  327. has not arrived yet. The longing is pointed forward, not backward.

  328. You are homesick for a country you have never visited

  329. and mistaking it for a memory. This is why Scripture

  330. draws a firm line. And just as it is appointed

  331. for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.

  332. Hebrews 9.27 One life, one story, no cycle of returns,

  333. no second attempt, no slow climb through many lifetimes. That

  334. sounds heavy until you turn it over. If this is

  335. your one life, then this life is not a rehearsal,

  336. and nothing in it is wasted. The kindness you showed

  337. when nobody thanked you counts. The years you spent caring

  338. for someone who could not care back count. The faith

  339. you held on to when you had nothing else to

  340. hold count. You are not accumulating credit toward a better

  341. next round. You are living the one life God gave,

  342. and every part of it matters to him. And it

  343. means the wrongs done to you are not a debt

  344. you carried in from somewhere. Nobody is paying off a

  345. past life. If you were born into hardship, into illness,

  346. into a family that did not want you, it was

  347. not a sentence for something you did before you existed.

  348. There was no before. Some of it stays hidden, and

  349. Scripture is comfortable with that. The secret things belong to

  350. the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed

  351. belong to us and to our children forever. Deuteronomy 29.29

  352. What God has kept to himself, he has not neglected.

  353. He has simply not explained it, and there is a difference.

  354. A child does not understand most of what a parent does,

  355. and the not understanding is not evidence of being unloved.

  356. There is one more piece of this worth naming, because

  357. it troubles thoughtful people. If God knew me before I

  358. was born, was my life decided for me? Am I

  359. just walking through a script that was written without me?

  360. Scripture does not treat God's knowledge as a cage. God

  361. knew Jeremiah, and Jeremiah still argued with him, still complained,

  362. still wept and kept going, and made real choices every

  363. day of a hard life. Being known ahead of time

  364. left him free, and it left him with company and

  365. work that would have crushed a man on his own.

  366. Love that arrives first does not cancel the response of

  367. the one who is loved. Every parent who prepares a

  368. room for a child who cannot yet walk understands this.

  369. The preparing came first. The walking is still the child's own.

  370. So if you were not anywhere before your birth, what was?

  371. Love was. Not a vague, warm feeling, floating in eternity,

  372. but love between real persons, already ancient before the first

  373. star burned. On the last night before the cross, Jesus

  374. prayed out loud and let his disciples listen. In the

  375. middle of that prayer, he says something about the Father

  376. that reaches back past everything. Because you loved me before

  377. the foundation of the world. John chapter 17 verse 24

    John 17:24

  378. Before the foundation of the world there was a father

  379. loving a son. That love did not begin. It has

  380. no starting line. And when the world was made, and

  381. when human beings were made from dust, they were made

  382. by a God who already knew how to love perfectly,

  383. because he had never done anything else. Jesus is the

  384. only one who can honestly say he was somewhere before

  385. he was born. He is the one true exception to

  386. everything we have seen. He did not begin in a womb.

  387. He entered one. He took the dust and the breath,

  388. joined the same human line that carried Levi and carries you,

  389. and lived a life with tired feet and real hunger.

  390. which means the God who made you out of the

  391. ground has since walked on that ground. He knows what

  392. it is to be exhausted, to be misunderstood, to have

  393. his family think he had lost his mind, to weep

  394. at a friend's grave, to feel a body give out.

  395. When Scripture says he understands your weakness, it is not

  396. a figure of speech. So the love that was there

  397. before you existed is not distant love. It is the

  398. love that came looking for you all the way down

  399. into your world. There is one more birth in the Bible,

  400. and it is the only one you get to choose.

  401. A religious leader named Nicodemus came to Jesus at night

  402. with careful questions, and Jesus cut past all of them.'

  403. You must be born again,' he said. And when Nicodemus

  404. asked how a grown man could possibly be born a

  405. second time, Jesus explained the difference.' That which is born

  406. of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born

  407. of the Spirit is Spirit' John 3.6. Your first beginning

  408. came through flesh and breath. It gave you life in

  409. this world, and it will end here. The second birth

  410. comes through the Spirit of God, and it does not end.

  411. Notice the pattern holding steady, natural first, spiritual after. The

  412. same order Paul described, the same order Genesis showed. God

  413. has never once reversed it, and He does not skip

  414. a step with anyone. Everyone starts as dust that breathes.

  415. Nobody arrives already spiritual, and nobody is too far into

  416. the natural to receive the spiritual. This is the answer

  417. to the ache underneath the whole question. People want their

  418. souls to be eternal in the past because they are

  419. frightened about the future. They want to have always existed

  420. so that they will always exist. But the Bible offers

  421. the thing they are actually reaching for and offers it

  422. from the other direction. You did not always exist. You

  423. will exist forever if you are joined to the one

  424. who does. And that offer does not depend on your record.

  425. There is nothing you did before you were born to

  426. earn it, and nothing you have done since that can

  427. put it out of reach. It comes the same way

  428. your first breath came. As a gift. You did not

  429. qualify for your first birth either. If you have been

  430. circling this for years, waiting until you feel worthy or

  431. until you understand it all, you are waiting for something

  432. that never comes to anyone. The invitation is open now

  433. in the state you are actually in, tonight in the

  434. chair you are sitting in. And this second birth is

  435. not a religious achievement to add to a life that

  436. already feels too full of demands. Look at how the

  437. first one worked. You were passive. You contributed nothing. Someone

  438. else did every part of it, and you woke up

  439. alive in a world you had not asked for. The

  440. second birth comes the same way. God gives and you receive,

  441. and the receiving is called faith. That is worth hearing

  442. for anyone worn out by religion. If you have spent

  443. years trying to be good enough for God, keeping score,

  444. listening to voices that told you the bar was always

  445. a little higher than where you stood, this is a

  446. different word entirely. You cannot be born by trying harder.

  447. Nobody ever was. We started with a question about where.

  448. We end with a promise about how long. Through the

  449. prophet Isaiah, God speaks to a people who are tired, aging,

  450. and afraid he has forgotten them, and he answers with

  451. the longest reach in Scripture.' Who have been born by

  452. me from before your birth, carried from the womb? Even

  453. to your old age I am he, and to gray

  454. hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I

  455. will bear, I will carry, and will save.' Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 46:3

  456. 46 verses 3 and 4. One sentence covers a whole

  457. human life. From before birth to grey hairs, one carrying,

  458. never handed off, never set down. That verse is for

  459. the person who feels their strength going. For the one

  460. who cannot drive anymore, who watches the world get further away,

  461. who wonders whether anyone would notice a quiet exit. God says,

  462. I made you. I have been carrying you since before

  463. you knew there was such a thing as being carried,

  464. and I am not going to put you down now.

  465. So here is where the answer leaves us. You were

  466. not in heaven before you were born. You were not

  467. a spark in the universe, and you were not living

  468. some earlier life whose debts you are paying now. You

  469. did not exist. God formed you. God breathed, and you began.

  470. But there was never a moment when you were unknown.

  471. Before you had substance, God's eyes were on the substance forming.

  472. Before you had a single day, your days were written down.

  473. Before there was a mouth to say your name, God

  474. had already said it. And the love that reached toward

  475. you before you existed did not stop once you arrived.

  476. It went to a cross to bring you home. Your

  477. beginning was not an accident of biology. Your years are

  478. not a rehearsal for a better attempt. And your ending

  479. is not a return to nothing, because the breath that

  480. was given will go back to the God who gave it,

  481. and everyone who belongs to Christ will be raised. You

  482. came from God's hand. You are held by God's care.

  483. And you are invited tonight to walk the rest of

  484. the way with the one who wanted you before there

  485. was anything of you to want. If this video helped

  486. you grow deeper in God's Word, I want to personally

  487. invite you to be part of what we are building here.
