  4. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Exodus, chapter 16, verses 2-5 and 27-35, as printed in your liturgy.

    Exodus 16:2–5

  5. A reading from the book of Exodus.

  6. In the desert, the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.

  7. The Israelites said to them,

  8. If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt.

  9. There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted.

  10. But you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.

  11. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  12. I will rain down bread from heaven for you.

  13. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day.

  14. In this way, I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

  15. On the sixth day, they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.

  16. Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it,

  17. but they found none.

  18. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  19. How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?

  20. Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath.

  21. That is why on the sixth day, he gives you bread for two days.

  22. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day.

  23. No one is to go out.

  24. So the people rested on the seventh day.

  25. The people of Israel called the bread manna.

  26. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.

  27. Moses said,

  28. This is what the Lord has commanded.

  29. Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come,

  30. so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.

  31. So Moses said to Aaron,

  32. Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it.

  33. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.

  34. As the Lord commanded Moses,

  35. Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law so that it might be preserved.

  36. The Israelites ate manna forty years until they came to a land that was settled.

  37. They ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.

  38. The grass withers and the flowers fall.

  39. The word of our God stands forever.

  40. Good morning to you all.

  41. We are in this new sermon series on the Ten Commandments.

  42. We've been spending the last several weeks just looking at the prologue of the Ten Commandments,

  43. which we find in Exodus chapter 20, verse 1.

    Exodus 20:1

  44. And the prologue of the Ten Commandments goes like this.

  45. It says,

  46. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  47. And I think a lot of people in the Bay Area, you know, the word salvation can kind of feel vague and abstract.

  48. But when we get to this prologue of the Ten Commandments,

  49. we find a pretty adequate definition of what salvation is when we hear these words,

  50. I brought you out of slavery.

  51. I've set you free.

  52. I've liberated you.

  53. Salvation is liberation.

  54. And that's what this book of Exodus is all about.

  55. Salvation is liberation from our bondage.

  56. And if you remember over these past few weeks,

  57. we talked in Exodus 12 about the blood of the Passover lamb

  58. and that we were people who had been bought with a price, the price of blood.

  59. We talked about in Exodus 14, the parting of the Red Sea,

  60. that when there was no way, God made a way,

  61. that God made a way out of slavery.

  62. He made a way through death and into a new kind of life.

  63. And so when the New Testament looks back on these events,

  64. these foundational liberating events of the Old Testament,

  65. it sees these as signposts.

  66. At Exodus 12, the Passover lamb is a signpost pointing us to Jesus,

  67. who had shed his blood to deliver us from our sins.

  68. It's pointing us, Exodus 14, the parting of the Red Sea,

  69. is pointing us to the resurrection of Jesus,

  70. where God made a way where there was no way.

  71. He made a way out of slavery and out of death into new life.

  72. And so that brings us now to Exodus 16.

  73. Here we are.

  74. We've been liberated from Egypt.

  75. We're on the other side of the Red Sea.

  76. We've walked through slavery.

  77. We've come through death.

  78. We're out here with new life on the other side.

  79. Now what?

  80. What now?

  81. What is this journey with God, this liberator God,

  82. what's it going to be like?

  83. And here's the thing that a lot of people either don't know or easily forget.

  84. It's that God's salvation, God's liberation,

  85. is not about being set free to go and do whatever we want to do.

  86. And that, I think, is where the postmodern worldview

  87. has seeped into the church quite a bit

  88. because postmodern philosophy says that freedom is the absence of constraints.

  89. Freedom is the ability to do what I want to do without anybody telling me what to do.

  90. But what you're going to hear over and over in the sermon series on the Ten Commandments

  91. is that that is a different kind of slavery.

  92. That definition of freedom is actually a slavery to self.

  93. It's a slavery to your culture.

  94. It's a slavery to the subjectivity of your present historic moment.

  95. And what this is telling us is that real freedom, real liberation,

  96. is about no longer serving harsh taskmasters and oppressive tyrants in Egypt,

  97. but rather to have a new and better king.

  98. Real liberation is not about being set free so that you can live according to your own agenda

  99. and set your own rules and do whatever you want.

  100. No, it's about learning how to be a free human being under your sovereign Lord as your king.

  101. That's what Exodus is about.

  102. And so the question is, what can we expect from this God who's newly liberated us?

  103. What does it mean to belong to him?

  104. What does it mean to now be on a journey of liberation with him?

  105. And that's what we're going to talk about today.

  106. We're going to talk about the God who trains us,

  107. the God who provides for us, and the God who refreshes us.

  108. Okay, the God who trains us, the God who provides for us,

  109. and the God who refreshes us.

  110. I want to start by talking about the way in which God trains us.

  111. This God who liberates us from slavery is the same God who leads his people

  112. into what verse 2 calls, quote unquote, the desert.

  113. Why would God do that?

  114. Why would a good and powerful God lead us into the desert of all places?

  115. Why would he take his people straight from their liberation into a howling wasteland?

  116. Why does he not take them straight into the promised land that's flowing with milk and honey?

  117. I mean, he's surely powerful enough to do that.

  118. Why doesn't he just take his people on the quickest, easiest, most efficient, comfortable route

  119. to the promised land?

  120. To use New Testament terms, why doesn't God just take us straight from justification to glorification?

  121. Why does God think it's a good idea to take us through this wilderness we call sanctification?

  122. I mean, I thought he liberated us so we could be happy.

  123. I thought he liberated us and set us free so that we could have all we need and all we want.

  124. I thought life with God was going to be this graph that goes up and to the right,

  125. onward and upward, forever and ever, better and better and better.

  126. But strangely and inexplicably, here is this God who brings us in our liberation out into desolation wilderness.

  127. Here we are as the people of God in the Mojave Desert.

  128. This God-forsaken Nowheresville.

  129. Why are we here?

  130. Last week we saw in Exodus 14 that the Lord intentionally put his people in an uncomfortable position in the desert.

  131. They were hemmed in there.

  132. They had a mountain on their left, a mountain on their right, Red Sea in front of them, Egyptian army behind them.

  133. And they were sitting ducks.

  134. Why did God put them in that position?

  135. And we were told because he wanted everyone to know that he was the Lord.

  136. He wanted everyone to see that he had the power and the glory that belongs only to him.

  137. And there's a very similar pattern, a very similar dynamic here.

  138. What is the Lord doing?

  139. Well, if you read the story, Exodus 15, God takes his people through the wilderness where they have no water,

  140. not one day, not two days, but for three days.

  141. And then here he takes them in Exodus 16.

  142. They've got no food.

  143. Exodus 17, they have no water.

  144. Again, what is he doing?

  145. He's training his people.

  146. He's training his people.

  147. He's first of all showing them their need and their vulnerability and the weakness of their hearts.

  148. And then secondly, he's showing them that he can be trusted to meet their most basic and deepest needs.

  149. Look at verse two.

  150. It says that in the desert, the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.

  151. The Israelites said to them, if only we died by the Lord's hand in Egypt.

  152. There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted.

  153. But you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.

  154. Any of you ever get hangry?

  155. Your parents, your kids ever get hangry?

  156. Here's our redeemed brothers and sisters, the church of the Old Testament.

  157. These are the mothers and the fathers of the faith.

  158. But they're spiritual newborns.

  159. They're spiritual infants.

  160. And here they are.

  161. They're one month, you know, out of slavery.

  162. They're 30 days into this new life, this new journey of liberation.

  163. And how's it going for them?

  164. Well, these people who've been redeemed by the blood of the Passover lamb,

  165. they're terrified by the harsh cruelties of the desert.

  166. They're feeling serious pain.

  167. They're feeling serious hunger pains in their stomachs.

  168. And if you've been a Christian for like five minutes,

  169. surely you've felt this.

  170. Right?

  171. You know what it means to find yourself in an awful place.

  172. God has brought you for some reason to this hard and difficult place.

  173. This dangerous and uncomfortable and troubling place.

  174. And your experience of life is causing you to wonder whether you are indeed one of the Lord's people.

  175. It's causing you to wonder whether or not you got your guidance wrong.

  176. It's causing you to wonder how the evil one has come in to spoil the Lord's perfect plans for you.

  177. And our hardships breed all kind of questions.

  178. Why me?

  179. Why is this taking so long?

  180. Why is this so brutal?

  181. How could I have slipped so far from the will of God?

  182. Where did I go wrong?

  183. You ever wonder what you're doing out here in the wilderness with all this pain?

  184. The quick and easy spiritual answer is that all of our troubles are down to the evil one, Satan,

  185. who is ever watchful to find some vulnerability in our defenses.

  186. Another answer is that knowingly or unknowingly,

  187. we've strayed out of the will of God or somehow gotten our guidance wrong.

  188. And in some circumstances, these can be sufficient explanations,

  189. but oftentimes they don't tell the whole story.

  190. Because the reality is the Israelites are here in this wilderness

  191. because the Lord who loves them has led them there.

  192. A pillar of cloud by day, a pillar of fire by night,

  193. he's led them right here where he wants them.

  194. And so far in this journey, every move in whatever direction,

  195. every stop and every start, every turn of the pathway was by the will of God.

  196. Whether or not they were at a desert oasis and they were feeling good

  197. or they're out here and they're in dire straits feeling thirsty and hungry,

  198. it's because the Lord has led them here.

  199. And why would he do that?

  200. Because God trains us by leading us into situations which call for our trust.

  201. He puts us in situations that call for the endurance and obedience

  202. that prove that our trust is real.

  203. So that as we exercise that trust in him,

  204. in the face of new challenges,

  205. our trust begins to develop.

  206. Our trust begins to mature

  207. until we come to see that everything that happens to us

  208. is under his divine supervision

  209. and everything that happens to us is full of God's purposes for our good.

  210. Our Lord trains his people by putting us in places

  211. where we have this perpetual choice

  212. between either complaining against God

  213. or living out our trust and obedience to him.

  214. And let's go back now to verse 3

  215. because they say,

  216. If only we died by the Lord's hand in Egypt.

  217. There we sat around pots of meat

  218. and ate all the food we wanted,

  219. but you brought us out into this desert

  220. to starve this entire assembly to death.

  221. They say,

  222. We are so desperate for food to eat

  223. that we wish the Lord had struck us down

  224. on the night of Passover.

  225. We wish he'd have just drowned us in the Red Sea.

  226. Why would he send the plagues?

  227. Why would he display his power?

  228. Why would he go through all this trouble

  229. only to bring us out here

  230. so that we would die in the desert anyway?

  231. This is absurd.

  232. I wish he'd have left us alone in our slavery.

  233. I wish he'd have never bothered

  234. to liberate us in the first place.

  235. And why do they say these things in their hearts?

  236. Because they say,

  237. Well, we miss the all-you-can-eat buffets of Egypt.

  238. I mean, the fish was good.

  239. The cucumbers, the melons, the bread.

  240. It was so good.

  241. And notice that they're kind of speaking

  242. in the language of addiction,

  243. the language that addicts use

  244. when they kind of have a selective memory of the past,

  245. this mistaken nostalgia

  246. for what was actually killing them.

  247. They're living in denial.

  248. They're only remembering the tiny pleasures,

  249. and they're blocking out the massive pain

  250. and misery of being slaves.

  251. And this sort of delusional, pathological preoccupation

  252. that God's people can sometimes have

  253. of how great life was

  254. when we were oppressed without God.

  255. You know about Stockholm Syndrome,

  256. where you kind of come to love

  257. and admire your abusers and your slave masters?

  258. That's Stockholm Syndrome of the soul.

  259. That's what's going on right here.

  260. And if you turn in Deuteronomy chapter eight,

  261. which is kind of necessary to understand this story,

  262. Deuteronomy chapter eight, verse two says this.

  263. It says, remember how the Lord your God

  264. led you all the way in the wilderness these 40 years

  265. in order to what?

  266. In order to humble you and to test you

  267. so that you might know what was in your heart.

  268. Why does God want us to see what's in our hearts?

  269. What does he want us to see that's there in our hearts?

  270. We're saying to ourselves,

  271. it would have been better to have died

  272. as slaves with full stomachs

  273. than to be here as God's free people with discomfort.

  274. Forget about God.

  275. Forget about his liberation.

  276. Forget about his freedom.

  277. We want to feel good.

  278. See, though we are legally out of slavery,

  279. in our hearts, spiritually, internally,

  280. we can still be slaves.

  281. Slaves to our stomachs.

  282. Slaves to our situation.

  283. Slaves to our senses.

  284. Slaves to all the thought systems

  285. and the patterns of imagination in Egypt

  286. about the good life.

  287. And as was said last week,

  288. though God has gotten his people out of Egypt,

  289. he still needs to get Egypt out of his people.

  290. What would the right thing have been to do

  291. in this moment of pain and panic

  292. when the people were hungry?

  293. It would have been to drop down on their knees

  294. and cry out to this God

  295. who'd already saved them

  296. and say,

  297. God, you've given us so many reasons

  298. to trust in your goodness and your grace.

  299. You've shown us time and again

  300. how powerful you are,

  301. that you're our protector,

  302. that you're our provider,

  303. and we need your help.

  304. Have mercy on us.

  305. But they don't do that.

  306. They don't cry out to God.

  307. They cry out against God.

  308. And there's a grumbling,

  309. complaining spirit in their hearts

  310. against the Lord

  311. that he needs to simply train out of them.

  312. And I wonder about us.

  313. What about you?

  314. How many of us started

  315. strong in our journey with God?

  316. But like these spiritual newborns,

  317. these spiritual infants,

  318. we begin facing the first challenges

  319. of our liberation.

  320. We begin to face those first challenges

  321. of being free yet hungry and thirsty.

  322. And we realize that here we are out here

  323. in this wilderness

  324. with a severe shortage of supplies

  325. and we start freaking out

  326. and we start complaining against God.

  327. You see,

  328. if that's in your heart,

  329. God leads us out

  330. into these wilderness places

  331. so that he can train us

  332. to see that that's what's there.

  333. And so that he can train the slavery

  334. out of the hearts

  335. of his people.

  336. So this is the God who trains us.

  337. But I want us to also look at verse four

  338. because this is the God also

  339. who not only trains us,

  340. who brings us into the desert,

  341. but he's also the God

  342. who provides for us.

  343. Look at verse four.

  344. It says,

  345. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  346. I will rain down bread

  347. from heaven for you.

  348. Now if I were God,

  349. this passage would say,

  350. I will rain down fire from heaven

  351. on you ungrateful people

  352. who complain against me constantly

  353. even though I liberated you

  354. from your slavery.

  355. That's what you deserve.

  356. Fire from heaven.

  357. Now maybe if I'm having a good day,

  358. I would say,

  359. actually,

  360. I'm going to rain down on you

  361. on some random occasions

  362. a scant supply

  363. of low quality,

  364. crusty, moldy bread.

  365. But thank God I'm not God.

  366. Right?

  367. And thank God you're not God

  368. because I don't know

  369. what you would say.

  370. But this manna does not come down

  371. on random occasions.

  372. It comes every day.

  373. And this manna does not come

  374. in scant amounts.

  375. It comes in abundant,

  376. generous supply,

  377. two quarts per person per day,

  378. which is plenty.

  379. It's enough to satisfy.

  380. And this is not low quality bread,

  381. but in verse 31,

  382. it says that this manna

  383. tasted like wafers made with honey.

  384. This is Trader Joe's quality bread.

  385. Some of you are like British

  386. and from the Anglosphere.

  387. This is like McVitie's biscuits.

  388. Okay?

  389. The people would read this,

  390. these wafers made with honey,

  391. and they'd say,

  392. this is the most delicious food

  393. you could possibly imagine.

  394. And the sweetness

  395. and the substance of this manna,

  396. it's given not just daily,

  397. but it's given in a double supply,

  398. one time a week.

  399. And it's this gift

  400. that just keeps coming

  401. day by day,

  402. week by week,

  403. not just for one year,

  404. but for 40 years.

  405. And what does that tell us

  406. about God?

  407. What does it mean

  408. that a jar of manna

  409. was miraculously preserved

  410. in the holy of holies

  411. of God's tabernacle,

  412. right beside the Ten Commandments

  413. as a sign

  414. for generations to come

  415. of who God is?

  416. What does it say

  417. about the person of God

  418. and the work of God?

  419. What says that we need

  420. to be continually

  421. reminding ourselves

  422. and reminding each other

  423. of how good

  424. and how gracious

  425. and how generous

  426. this provider actually is.

  427. He continually supplies

  428. an abundant,

  429. delicious,

  430. nutritious,

  431. daily food source

  432. for thousands

  433. upon thousands

  434. of people.

  435. Friends,

  436. do you know

  437. how good he is?

  438. Do you know

  439. how gracious he is?

  440. Do you know

  441. how generous

  442. this God is?

  443. And here's the thing,

  444. if he's able

  445. to meet his people's

  446. short-term

  447. and long-term needs

  448. with material bread,

  449. what does that mean?

  450. It means that he's also

  451. able to meet

  452. all of our

  453. non-material needs.

  454. You see,

  455. if he rains down

  456. material bread

  457. from heaven

  458. that is not necessarily

  459. what the people expect

  460. but it's exactly

  461. what they really need,

  462. then how much more

  463. can he meet

  464. our spiritual needs,

  465. our existential needs,

  466. our eternal needs?

  467. How much more

  468. can he give us

  469. of the abundant

  470. spiritual riches

  471. of heaven?

  472. I want us to remember

  473. that Jesus'

  474. ministry

  475. began

  476. when he was hungry

  477. and tempted

  478. in the desert.

  479. That's the

  480. official starting point

  481. of his ministry.

  482. He was baptized

  483. and he goes

  484. into the wilderness

  485. and he's hungry

  486. and he's tempted

  487. in the Gospel

  488. of Matthew chapter 4

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  489. and Jesus

  490. in that place,

  491. he quotes that passage

  492. from Deuteronomy 8

  493. that I read earlier.

  494. I'll read a little bit

  495. more of it here.

  496. It says,

  497. remember how the Lord

  498. your God led you

  499. all the way

  500. in the wilderness

  501. these 40 years

  502. to humble you

  503. and to test you

  504. in order to know

  505. what was in your heart,

  506. whether or not

  507. you would keep

  508. his commands.

  509. He humbled you,

  510. causing you to hunger

  511. and then feeding you

  512. with manna,

  513. which neither you

  514. nor your ancestors

  515. had known,

  516. in order to teach you

  517. this,

  518. and this is what

  519. Jesus quotes,

  520. in order to teach you

  521. that man does not

  522. live on bread alone,

  523. but on every word

  524. that comes

  525. from the mouth

  526. of the Lord.

  527. Jesus is saying

  528. there,

  529. Moses is saying

  530. there that

  531. our needs

  532. are way deeper

  533. than our material

  534. need for bread.

  535. In fact,

  536. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  537. Jesus asks the question,

  538. he says,

  539. is not life

  540. more than food?

  541. And then immediately

  542. he says,

  543. seek first the kingdom

  544. of God.

  545. Life is about

  546. so much more

  547. than food.

  548. And what he's saying

  549. is that we don't live

  550. on material bread

  551. alone,

  552. that's the lesson

  553. of the manna,

  554. but that spiritually

  555. we live on

  556. every word

  557. that comes

  558. from the mouth

  559. of our king,

  560. every word

  561. about his kingdom.

  562. And you remember

  563. in the Gospel

  564. of John,

  565. John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  566. Jesus goes out,

  567. he's with at least

  568. 5,000 men

  569. plus women

  570. and children,

  571. they're hungry,

  572. they're in this

  573. forsaken place,

  574. and what does he do?

  575. He multiplies bread.

  576. And then he says,

  577. he says,

  578. it was not Moses

  579. who gave you bread

  580. from heaven,

  581. but my father

  582. who gives you

  583. the true bread

  584. from heaven.

  585. For the bread

  586. of God

  587. is the bread

  588. that comes down

  589. from heaven

  590. and gives life

  591. to the world.

  592. The deeper meaning

  593. of the manna

  594. is that it points

  595. to our spiritual need

  596. for God's word,

  597. which God has so

  598. abundantly provided

  599. for us,

  600. not only in the scriptures,

  601. but in his word

  602. made flesh,

  603. his son,

  604. Jesus.

  605. And Jesus goes on

  606. in the Gospel

  607. of John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  608. he says,

  609. we heard it earlier,

  610. I am the living bread

  611. that came down

  612. from heaven.

  613. Whoever eats

  614. of this bread

  615. will live forever.

  616. Whoever eats

  617. the bread

  618. of my flesh,

  619. he says,

  620. has eternal life

  621. and I will raise

  622. them up

  623. on the last day.

  624. So how do we

  625. get this manna?

  626. How do we get

  627. this living bread

  628. from heaven

  629. that God has provided

  630. for us

  631. in Jesus Christ?

  632. It's interesting

  633. to consider

  634. if God's

  635. so powerful,

  636. why didn't he

  637. just put the manna

  638. straight into

  639. their stomachs?

  640. Right?

  641. They're like,

  642. they're walking around,

  643. they're like,

  644. we're in the wilderness,

  645. we're hungry,

  646. and then boom,

  647. oh,

  648. I feel better.

  649. He's already

  650. doing a miracle,

  651. why didn't he just

  652. go ahead

  653. and put it

  654. straight in?

  655. Well,

  656. the answer is

  657. that they

  658. were passive,

  659. right,

  660. at Passover

  661. and all they

  662. had to do

  663. was just put

  664. the blood

  665. of the lamb

  666. over the doorpost

  667. and they just

  668. had to sit there

  669. and basically

  670. watch God

  671. do everything.

  672. Same thing

  673. at the Red Sea,

  674. they were just

  675. completely passive.

  676. God did everything,

  677. all they had to do

  678. was just walk,

  679. like from one

  680. end to the other.

  681. And even here,

  682. God is actively

  683. providing the manna

  684. while everybody

  685. just sits around

  686. passively watching

  687. him do it.

  688. But once the manna

  689. has been provided,

  690. God's people

  691. are called

  692. to be active,

  693. right?

  694. They've got to

  695. actively go out

  696. and they've got to

  697. put their faith

  698. in God

  699. by going out

  700. to receive

  701. his provision.

  702. And I think

  703. that's important

  704. because if you're

  705. exploring Christianity,

  706. it's so important

  707. to take the time

  708. to understand

  709. who Jesus is,

  710. to understand

  711. what he did,

  712. to understand

  713. why he's

  714. the living bread

  715. that God gave

  716. to come down

  717. from heaven.

  718. But there comes

  719. a point

  720. where you've

  721. got to

  722. actively put

  723. your faith

  724. in God

  725. by going out

  726. to receive

  727. what he's

  728. provided.

  729. You've got to

  730. put your trust

  731. that if you

  732. take Jesus in,

  733. he will be

  734. the bread of heaven

  735. that can fill you,

  736. that he can

  737. satisfy you,

  738. he can give you

  739. life.

  740. That's how you

  741. become a Christian.

  742. But if you've

  743. become a Christian,

  744. you've got to

  745. realize that just

  746. because the Lord

  747. is providing

  748. your daily bread,

  749. you can still

  750. die in the desert

  751. if you don't

  752. go out and

  753. get it.

  754. And this is

  755. what it says

  756. in verse 4,

  757. Then the Lord

  758. said to Moses,

  759. I'll rain down

  760. bread from heaven

  761. for you.

  762. The people

  763. are to go out

  764. each day

  765. and to gather

  766. enough for that

  767. day,

  768. and in this way

  769. I will test

  770. them to see

  771. whether or not

  772. they will follow

  773. my instructions.

  774. Literally,

  775. I'm going to see

  776. whether or not

  777. they will walk

  778. by my Torah,

  779. they'll walk

  780. by my law.

  781. This will show

  782. the degree to

  783. which they put

  784. their faith in me

  785. and their trust

  786. in me.

  787. Will the provider's

  788. people trust

  789. the provider's

  790. word about

  791. the provider's

  792. gift so much

  793. that they put

  794. their trust

  795. into action

  796. and go and

  797. get it?

  798. When you

  799. become a Christian,

  800. one of the

  801. things you need

  802. to learn right

  803. away is that

  804. your schedule

  805. is no longer

  806. your schedule,

  807. but that God

  808. has a different

  809. plan for your

  810. daily schedule,

  811. and what the

  812. plan is,

  813. is that you

  814. need to get

  815. up and go

  816. do something

  817. every morning.

  818. Just like these

  819. people went and

  820. got the manna.

  821. You've got to

  822. actively trust

  823. him by getting

  824. up and going

  825. out and gathering

  826. the sweetness

  827. and the substance

  828. that he provides.

  829. You're to express

  830. your faith

  831. by expending

  832. effort

  833. to go out

  834. and get for

  835. yourself this

  836. delicious,

  837. nutritious bread

  838. from heaven.

  839. Jesus teaches

  840. us in the

  841. Sermon on the

  842. Mount.

  843. This is the

  844. way you should

  845. pray.

  846. Father,

  847. give me today

  848. my daily bread.

  849. But then we

  850. don't just sit

  851. there passively,

  852. we put our

  853. trust in God's

  854. provision,

  855. and we go

  856. and we get it.

  857. if you read

  858. this whole story,

  859. some people

  860. lacked confidence

  861. in God

  862. that he would

  863. provide the next

  864. day,

  865. and so they

  866. tried to keep

  867. some of the

  868. manna more

  869. than they needed.

  870. They tried to

  871. keep it overnight,

  872. and it just

  873. completely spoiled.

  874. And the reason

  875. is that God's

  876. trying to train

  877. us to live

  878. by faith

  879. and trusting

  880. him every day

  881. afresh.

  882. It doesn't

  883. matter what you

  884. did yesterday,

  885. what about today?

  886. You've got to

  887. eat bread

  888. today.

  889. God is

  890. training us

  891. and challenging

  892. us to

  893. rearrange our

  894. daily lives

  895. and our daily

  896. schedules around

  897. his gracious

  898. provision so we

  899. don't die out

  900. here in the

  901. wilderness.

  902. And this is my

  903. concern.

  904. I'm concerned

  905. that some of us

  906. who profess

  907. faith in Christ

  908. may be

  909. experiencing

  910. unnecessary

  911. self-inflicted

  912. pain and

  913. misery and

  914. stress.

  915. that some

  916. of us are

  917. experiencing

  918. self-inflicted

  919. exhaustion and

  920. malnutrition and

  921. emaciation because

  922. we're not going out

  923. by faith and

  924. gathering our

  925. daily spiritual

  926. bread and that

  927. heavenly substance

  928. that God wants to

  929. feed us in his

  930. word.

  931. And if that's

  932. you, we love you

  933. so much.

  934. We're doing a

  935. class today called

  936. How to Read the

  937. New Testament.

  938. And we encourage

  939. you, if you can't

  940. come today, come

  941. next week.

  942. Can't come next

  943. week?

  944. Come the following

  945. week.

  946. We want to

  947. teach you how

  948. to go get your

  949. bread so you can

  950. feed yourself and

  951. not die in the

  952. wilderness.

  953. Okay.

  954. He's the Lord who

  955. trains us.

  956. He's the God who

  957. provides for us.

  958. And I want to say a

  959. last word here on the

  960. God who refreshes

  961. us.

  962. He's the God who

  963. refreshes us.

  964. Look at verse 5.

  965. It says that on the

  966. sixth day they are to

  967. go and prepare what

  968. they bring in and

  969. that is to be twice

  970. as much as they

  971. gather on the other

  972. days.

  973. And then down in

  974. verse 29 it says,

  975. bear in mind that the

  976. Lord has given you

  977. the Sabbath and that

  978. is why on the sixth

  979. day he gives you

  980. bread for two days.

  981. Everyone is to stay

  982. where they are on the

  983. seventh day.

  984. No one is to go out

  985. so the people rested

  986. on the Sabbath day.

  987. What does it say to

  988. us about this God

  989. that one of the main

  990. things he wants for

  991. his people who've

  992. been wearied and

  993. exhausted by 80 plus

  994. years of slavery.

  995. Never had a day off,

  996. seven days a week.

  997. They're just in the

  998. daily grind generation

  999. to generation to

  1000. generation.

1001. What does it say that

  1002. this God is providing

  1003. for their rest?

  1004. He's providing for his

  1005. people's physical

  1006. refreshment and their

  1007. spiritual renewal.

  1008. It tells us that

  1009. though Pharaoh was an

  1010. oppressive tyrant,

1011. this God, this Lord is a

  1012. liberating father who

  1013. wants his children to

  1014. experience refreshment

  1015. by stopping every seven

  1016. days to just worship

  1017. him and enjoy him,

1018. to rest in his grace.

1019. But as you can see,

1020. this is sometimes hard for

  1021. God's people to trust

1022. because it says in verse

  1023. 27,

  1024. nevertheless,

1025. some of the people went

1026. out on the seventh day to

  1027. gather the manna,

  1028. but they found none.

  1029. God's asking his freed

1030. people to do for their

  1031. refreshment something

  1032. that feels counterintuitive

  1033. to them.

1034. He's not only wanting them

1035. to gather the manna every

1036. morning and not take more

1037. than they need because it's

  1038. going to spoil overnight,

1039. but he's also every six day

1040. wanting to ask them to

  1041. discipline themselves to

1042. trust in him that what he

  1043. provides will be enough.

1044. And that they can have a

1045. Sabbath and that it's not

1046. going to spoil overnight as

1047. it might on all the others.

1048. And this is just a really

  1049. strange thing.

  1050. It's unfamiliar to them.

1051. Why would God ask them to do

  1052. something that's

  1053. counterintuitive to them?

1054. Because God is training them

1055. to do things that are not

  1056. normal to their cultural

  1057. sensibilities.

1058. He's testing to see if his

1059. people will obey not only

  1060. those commands that make

  1061. perfect sense to them,

1062. but also especially the ones

  1063. that do not.

  1064. If I give you a double

  1065. amount once a week,

1066. will you just take me at my

1067. word that it will be enough

  1068. for you?

1069. And just rest and worship me.

1070. And see, clearly the Sabbath

1071. didn't make sense to people.

  1072. Verse 27,

  1073. Nevertheless, some of the

1074. people went out on the

  1075. seventh day.

  1076. They gathered the manna,

  1077. but they found none.

1078. And then the Lord said to

1079. Moses, how long will you

1080. people refuse to keep my

  1081. commands and my instructions?

  1082. Some people just couldn't

1083. resist trying to get ahead.

  1084. They couldn't resist trying

  1085. to advantage themselves.

1086. But of course they go and

  1087. they find no manna.

1088. And in trying to find the

1089. manna, they also don't stop

  1090. to rest and worship.

1091. So they get no refreshment.

1092. God is not going to bless

1093. his people when they try to

  1094. do things their way

  1095. rather than God's way.

1096. And the reason I'm pointing

1097. this out is because we're

1098. going to jump into the Ten

  1099. Commandments next week.

  1100. And the question is,

1101. if there's an attitude or

1102. there's an action that seems

  1103. intuitively right to us,

  1104. it seems culturally reasonable,

1105. it seems like this is a no

  1106. brainer, this is pleasurable,

1107. this is not so bad to us,

1108. but God happens to disagree

1109. with us about that thing

1110. that seems so normal and

1111. natural, what do we do?

1112. And the Ten Commandments is

1113. going to address all kind of

  1114. like practical things like

  1115. money and sex.

1116. And what we're going to see

  1117. is that pagan societies,

  1118. they've basically always been

1119. stingy with their money and

  1120. promiscuous with their bodies.

  1121. Every pagan society says,

1122. this is the way to be free.

1123. This is the way to be refreshed.

1124. This is the way to be human.

  1125. And so, pagan societies,

1126. you see that, you know,

  1127. they would basically give

  1128. nobody their money and

  1129. practically everybody their

  1130. body.

1131. But then God's people come

1132. along and we can see

  1133. historically and biblically

  1134. like they give practically

  1135. nobody their body and

  1136. almost everybody their money.

1137. It's the exact opposite of

1138. what our culture says and

  1139. what our intuition says.

1140. And what happens as a result?

1141. Well, the same thing that

1142. happened when they kept the

  1143. Sabbath holy.

1144. When they did it God's way,

  1145. they got refreshed.

1146. And when they did it their way,

  1147. they got exhausted.

1148. When they did it God's way,

  1149. they were blessed.

1150. And when they did it their way,

  1151. they were cursed.

1152. When they stopped to worship

  1153. their liberating God,

1154. when they stopped to worship

1155. the God who was providing for them,

  1156. they were refreshed.

  1157. They were blessed.

1158. And the question for us as we

1159. continue on this journey is,

1160. will God's people pattern our

  1161. lives on God's counterintuitive,

  1162. countercultural ways?

  1163. It says,
