  1. Well, we can turn back to our reading in the book of Psalms and Psalm 73.

  2. ! We're going to look at the whole of this psalm together.

  3. You can just read the first and last verse at the moment.

  4. Psalm begins, it's a psalm of Asaph.

  5. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

  6. And then in verse 28,

  7. But for me it is good to be near God.

  8. I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

  9. Very positive verses at the beginning and the end of the psalm,

  10. where Asaph sees in verse 1 that God is good.

  11. He is a great God who is good to his people, to those who are pure in heart.

  12. And then at the end of the psalm, he's saying,

  13. It is good for me to draw near to this God, this God who is good to me.

  14. In so many ways I have found there my refuge, and I will tell of all his wondrous works.

  15. You have that at the beginning and the end.

  16. But what you see throughout the psalm is a little like what David speaks of in Psalm 39.

  17. In that second half of verse 12,

  18. There's a lot going on.

  19. There's a lot of challenges, a lot of struggles that he has.

  20. And it's a real sense of looking at the Christian's life in so many ways.

  21. And what you see in the psalms so often is just that, the reality of life.

  22. One thing you can say about the psalms is that they reflect a real sense of honesty.

  23. From the author of the psalm, whoever that is, we know a number of different people wrote the psalms.

  24. David, many of them, but here we have another, a psalm of Asaph.

  25. And we see that they come across just with that sense of, this is the reality of life.

  26. It's Asaph who was one who was a worship leader in the temple.

  27. You read of him in 1 Chronicles chapter 15, where you're seeing an outline of what the community's worship looked like

    1 Chronicles 15 chapter mention

  28. and who was involved in it.

  29. And Asaph is there mentioned as one of the worship leaders.

  30. And so he was one who led people into that worship in the temple.

  31. And part of his task was, it was through song.

  32. It was through music.

  33. It was through leading them into the praise of God.

  34. But what you see in this psalm and so many others, it's just not always a cheery chorus.

  35. It's not always, don't worry, everything's fine.

  36. And there's very much a sense of the reality of all the different ups and downs.

  37. And in Psalm 73, Asaph has a lot of these questions of someone who is finding the way difficult,

  38. of someone who is looking around, seeing all that's going on around him and wondering,

  39. well, we're saying God is good.

  40. But yet how in reality is God good when this is what we're seeing around us?

  41. He's in a host of others you find in Scripture who had questions.

  42. You think of Job in the Old Testament and his life and all that he went through in his life.

  43. It would be easy to question the goodness of God, easy to question everything that's going on around him.

  44. Or many of the prophets, Jeremiah, all the prophets, they all had their own different questions of what was going on.

  45. What's happening around us?

  46. How can we see the goodness of God in the midst of this?

  47. And yet always, always they were able to come to that point where their focus, their attention comes to the reality of God.

  48. And the reality that yes, God is good.

  49. God is gracious.

  50. God is merciful.

  51. Seeing the fullness of God.

  52. And that's what Asaph does in this psalm.

  53. He sees the fullness of God.

  54. He sees a right view of God and who he is and all that he does, no matter what's happening around.

  55. And so as we look at this psalm, we see that fullness of God.

  56. But how do you see God?

  57. Do you see God as good tonight?

  58. When you reflect on his word, when you reflect maybe on your own situation,

  59. when you reflect on things that are going on around,

  60. are you able to say with confidence,

  61. God is good.

  62. God is gracious.

  63. God, as we sang in Psalm 93,

  64. his throne is enduring.

  65. His throne is secure.

  66. Everything about him is firm.

  67. He is from eternity.

  68. He is to eternity.

  69. He has all things in his hands.

  70. Or do you have the questions?

  71. Do you have the niggles?

  72. Do you have the doubts?

  73. God is good, but...

  74. Well, this psalm, and so many of the psalms, as we say, the whole of Scripture,

  75. helps us to find answers to these challenges,

  76. helps us to find that confidence that we can have in God.

  77. When we see the fullness of God,

  78. not just a part of God,

  79. but the fullness of God.

  80. One day there was three blind men who were taken to a zoo.

  81. They wanted to go and experience the zoo.

  82. Even though they couldn't see the animals that were there,

  83. they wanted to experience the occasion.

  84. They wanted to experience the sounds that they would hear.

  85. And they had a guide with them,

  86. taking them around the zoo.

  87. And they were hearing all these noises,

  88. and the man was describing the animal that was making the noise,

  89. their habitat,

  90. what they were eating,

  91. what they were doing,

  92. all of these kinds of things.

  93. But during their tour of the zoo,

  94. they came to the place where the elephants were.

  95. And because they had a little bit of time,

  96. the zookeeper decided that instead of just describing

  97. what was in front of them,

  98. he would allow them to reach out and touch.

  99. And so one by one,

  100. the blind men went up.

  101. And being blind,

  102. they came to different parts of the animal.

  103. The first one reached out and grabbed the tail.

  104. And having experienced other things,

  105. he said,

  106. it's like a rope.

  107. It's not what I expected.

  108. It's just like a rope.

  109. Second man came and reached out

  110. and felt the elephant's leg.

  111. He said,

  112. it's not like a rope at all.

  113. It's much bigger than a rope.

  114. It was more like a tree trunk.

  115. And the third one walked up

  116. to reach out to the animal

  117. and just walked into it,

  118. into the side of the elephant.

  119. And he said,

  120. no,

  121. it's just like a huge wall.

  122. Just a massive wall.

  123. That's the only way I can describe it.

  124. It's not like the way you're describing it.

  125. They were just seeing,

  126. well,

  127. they weren't seeing,

  128. they were just feeling out in part.

  129. They were describing a huge animal,

  130. but only in part.

  131. For one,

  132. it was just like a small rope.

  133. Another like a tree.

  134. Another like a wall.

  135. They've only got a part description.

  136. And for ourselves with God,

  137. that's the way we can be

  138. depending on our experience

  139. or what we're going through

  140. or what we're,

  141. the challenges that we're facing.

  142. Maybe we're only just seeing a part of God.

  143. And we're not seeing the fullness of God.

  144. And that's what leads to our questions.

  145. If God is so,

  146. why doesn't he do this?

  147. We're not seeing the full picture.

  148. It's often the question,

  149. if God is real,

  150. why does he allow suffering?

  151. If God could have stopped death,

  152. why didn't he?

  153. Why does God allow war?

  154. Why does God allow evil?

  155. We're seeing God in just our own little box

  156. instead of seeing the fullness of God.

  157. The bigger picture.

  158. Because when we see the fullness of God,

  159. we realize we don't deserve any mercy from him

  160. because we are sinners.

  161. But he graciously gives us mercy.

  162. And the mercy that he gives,

  163. we need to see in finding him

  164. and seeing the goodness of God

  165. and coming to him

  166. and walking closely with him.

  167. And so that's what Asaph is doing for us

  168. in this psalm.

  169. We are often guilty

  170. of not seeing God for who he is.

  171. But here we are brought to see,

  172. here is the fullness of God

  173. who knows,

  174. who understands,

  175. who takes us,

  176. who leads us,

  177. and who has great things in store

  178. for all of his people.

  179. And so we're going to look at

  180. the fullness of God

  181. as we find it in this psalm

  182. in three different ways,

  183. taking us on that pilgrim's walk,

  184. as it were,

  185. when we see,

  186. first of all,

  187. the toiling nature of the psalm.

  188. And then we see the turning point.

  189. And then we see the thrusting.

  190. The toiling,

  191. the turning,

  192. and the thrusting.

  193. So first of all,

  194. we're going to think of the toiling.

  195. Asaph,

  196. he says here in verse 1,

  197. truly,

  198. God is good to Israel.

  199. God is good.

  200. And yet as you go on,

  201. you see his struggle.

  202. You see how he is toiling.

  203. Straight into there in verse 2,

  204. but as for me,

  205. my feet had almost stumbled.

  206. My steps had nearly slipped.

  207. But he is,

  208. we're not,

  209. he's struggling with what he sees around.

  210. He's struggling with all that's going on

  211. as he sees the wicked,

  212. as it says in verse 3,

  213. the prosperity of the wicked.

  214. And his eyes become envious towards them.

  215. How are they getting on so well?

  216. Why are things going so right with them?

  217. Is that not just the way that I should go

  218. and I should point others to go as well?

  219. It takes him down a dangerous part.

  220. But his confession of truly God is good,

  221. is in light of his own struggles.

  222. You see in verse 1,

  223. it's almost like he's standing

  224. on that solid ground.

  225. And yet as his steps goes on,

  226. he's going into the sinking sand.

  227. He's starting to flounder.

  228. I was envious of the arrogant

  229. when I saw their prosperity.

  230. They have no troubles like others do.

  231. They are not stricken

  232. like the rest of mankind.

  233. And so he goes on.

  234. He's describing them

  235. in all these different ways.

  236. He even says in verse 9,

  237. they set their mouths against the heavens

  238. and their tongue struts through the earth.

  239. Therefore his people turn back to them

  240. and find no fault in them.

  241. There's this sense of,

  242. why bother?

  243. Why bother trying to live a good life

  244. in the light of a good God?

  245. What's the point?

  246. When we're struggling,

  247. when we're having it hard,

  248. when things are going against us,

  249. and yet these wicked people,

  250. they're flourishing,

  251. they're prospering,

  252. and everything's going right for them.

  253. Why bother?

  254. He even goes to the point

  255. where he says in verse 11,

  256. and they say,

  257. how can God know?

  258. Is there knowledge in the Most High?

  259. It's like a sense of mocking against God.

  260. How can God know?

  261. He's not that good a God.

  262. He's not that great a God.

  263. So there's a sense of toiling.

  264. There's God who is good.

  265. He is questioning.

  266. God is good,

  267. and this is through Jesus himself.

  268. It testifies to that.

  269. In Matthew 19, verse 17,

    Matthew 19:17

  270. there is none good,

  271. that is, but God.

  272. And so in the goodness of God,

  273. why do hard things come our way?

  274. Because God is good,

  275. there's an expectation

  276. that good things will follow.

  277. And you could say,

  278. well, that's scriptural,

  279. that the Lord blesses his people.

  280. And we know that.

  281. It tells us in Psalm 84,

  282. for example,

  283. in verse 11,

  284. for the Lord God is a sun and shield.

  285. The Lord bestows favor and honor.

  286. No good thing does he withhold

  287. from those who walk uprightly.

  288. O Lord of hosts,

  289. blessed is the one who trusts in you.

  290. So no good thing does he withhold.

  291. So why is there no blessing?

  292. Why do people struggle as Christians?

  293. Well, because we are sinners.

  294. And you see Asaph's sin here

  295. in verse 3,

  296. for I was envious.

  297. I was envious of the arrogant.

  298. Envy comes in.

  299. Greed comes in.

  300. Jealousy comes in.

  301. All of these things.

  302. And what does that mean?

  303. It means we are not walking uprightly with God,

  304. as Psalm 84 says,

  305. where he does not hold good

  306. from those who walk uprightly.

  307. So we are at fault so often.

  308. We cannot blame God,

  309. that he is not good.

  310. It is us.

  311. There are things that come in

  312. to our hearts,

  313. that mar our relationship,

  314. where we end up toiling

  315. in our struggles with him.

  316. He had stumbled, it says,

  317. and he had fallen

  318. because there was sin in his heart.

  319. He wanted to enjoy life.

  320. He wanted to have just as they had

  321. prosperity and fullness

  322. and all of these things.

  323. You can almost get a sense here

  324. that they were going hungry,

  325. as his people,

  326. and yet those who were wicked

  327. were prospering like verse 7.

  328. Their eyes swell out through fatness.

  329. Their heart overflow with follies.

  330. There's a sense they're getting on well.

  331. Why am I?

  332. Why cannot I be blessed

  333. and enjoy all of these things?

  334. Why should I have all of these struggles?

  335. What is the issue here?

  336. There is envy, jealousy,

  337. all of these things,

  338. but the bigger issue,

  339. he's looking to the people around him

  340. and measuring the goodness of God by them.

  341. His focus is not on God,

  342. but circumstances.

  343. And that is what so often

  344. causes us to toil

  345. and to stumble as well.

  346. When we take our eyes of God

  347. and just look to the circumstances around us

  348. and say,

  349. where is the goodness of God?

  350. Why isn't he blessing?

  351. Why are all these wicked people

  352. getting on so well?

  353. Because we take our eyes of God,

  354. we stumble.

  355. We see this so often in Scripture

  356. where a people or individuals

  357. looking to God,

  358. trusting him,

  359. going forward in his strength.

  360. You think of the children of Israel

  361. coming out of Egypt

  362. on the border of the promised land.

  363. They go in and they have a look around.

  364. What do they see?

  365. They see giants.

  366. We cannot defeat them.

  367. Their eyes are taken off God.

  368. Only Joshua and Caleb say,

  369. but we can.

  370. They're looking to God.

  371. They're trusting God.

  372. David and Goliath.

  373. Goliath cannot be defeated

  374. because they're looking at the circumstance,

  375. not to God,

  376. but David looks to God.

  377. You think of Peter

  378. in the New Testament

  379. when he was out in the boat

  380. with other disciples

  381. and they saw the Lord

  382. coming towards them

  383. in Matthew 14, verse 28.

    Matthew 14:28

  384. He said,

  385. Lord, if it is you,

  386. command me to come to you on the water.

  387. And Jesus said,

  388. Come.

  389. So Peter got out of the boat

  390. and walked on water

  391. and came to Jesus.

  392. But when he saw the wind,

  393. he was afraid.

  394. And beginning to sink,

  395. he cried out,

  396. Lord, save me.

  397. And what happened?

  398. Jesus reached out his hand,

  399. took him,

  400. hold him,

  401. saying,

  402. Oh, you of little faith,

  403. why did you doubt?

  404. Took his eyes off the Lord

  405. and look to the circumstances.

  406. It's what we do so often.

  407. Are you doing that?

  408. Are you one tonight

  409. who is taking your eyes off God

  410. and just looking at your circumstances

  411. and saying,

  412. it's too difficult.

  413. It's too hard.

  414. Thinking the goodness of God

  415. only means blessings

  416. and not struggles,

  417. while we are wrong.

  418. There will be difficulties.

  419. And that's the reality

  420. of what Asaph shows us here.

  421. There are hard times.

  422. There are times when we see

  423. what's going on.

  424. We take our eyes off God

  425. and we start to sink.

  426. We start to stumble.

  427. We start to toil.

  428. But the second thing we see here

  429. is there's a turning.

  430. There's a turning.

  431. What we see with Asaph

  432. in this psalm

  433. is a turning point comes.

  434. He has all these questions.

  435. Just like we all do.

  436. We all want the answers

  437. to life's big questions.

  438. But we don't have them.

  439. And Asaph certainly

  440. didn't feel that he did either.

  441. He seemed weary.

  442. He seemed to be struggling in this.

  443. Look at verse 16.

  444. But when I thought

  445. how to understand this,

  446. it seemed to me

  447. a wearisome task.

  448. It seemed to me

  449. a wearisome task.

  450. How?

  451. How am I going to understand this?

  452. How can I ever understand

  453. this world that we live in?

  454. How can I ever understand

  455. why the wicked are prospering

  456. while I am struggling?

  457. But yet he found a way.

  458. It seemed to him

  459. a wearisome task.

  460. In verse 17,

  461. until,

  462. until I went

  463. into the sanctuary of God,

  464. then I discerned

  465. their end.

  466. It's a great thing

  467. to be able to draw near

  468. to God.

  469. To draw near to God

  470. and see that God's word

  471. gives us answers

  472. to all these important questions.

  473. We might not

  474. have a full explanation

  475. why

  476. do

  477. wicked people prosper.

  478. We don't maybe have

  479. an answer to that,

  480. but we have an answer

  481. to their end.

  482. And that's what

  483. Asaph sees here.

  484. I discerned

  485. their end.

  486. And that's seeing things

  487. in the bigger picture.

  488. That's seeing the fullness

  489. of God

  490. that it's not just

  491. for the here and now,

  492. but it's for the whole

  493. of eternity

  494. that we're thinking of God.

  495. I discerned

  496. their end.

  497. And then

  498. verse 18,

  499. truly,

  500. you set them

  501. in slippery places.

  502. You make them

  503. fall to ruin.

  504. So he was close

  505. to stumbling himself

  506. until he draws near

  507. to God

  508. into God's house.

  509. Where did he find answers?

  510. He found them

  511. when he came

  512. to look

  513. to the fullness

  514. of God

  515. and discerned

  516. their end.

  517. Where are you

  518. turning

  519. tonight

  520. for your answers?

  521. Where are you

  522. turning

  523. in your struggles

  524. to the wisdom

  525. of the world,

  526. to the wisdom

  527. of others,

  528. or to the wisdom

  529. of God?

  530. To discern

  531. the bigger picture,

  532. to discern

  533. the fullness

  534. of God,

  535. that he has a plan,

  536. he has a purpose

  537. in all things.

  538. A slippery

  539. place

  540. that would

  541. lead them

  542. to ruin.

  543. Verse 19,

  544. you see this,

  545. how they are

  546. destroyed in a moment,

  547. swept away utterly

  548. by terror.

  549. There's a fearsome

  550. thing there

  551. when you think about it.

  552. It's that end

  553. for them.

  554. It's an eternity

  555. in hell.

  556. That's what it's

  557. telling us here,

  558. destroyed.

  559. Destruction

  560. is their end.

  561. And then you begin

  562. to see things

  563. in perspective.

  564. You begin

  565. to see things

  566. in the fullness

  567. of life

  568. and the fullness

  569. of God.

  570. That God

  571. is good.

  572. That God

  573. is the one

  574. who has answers

  575. to all of these

  576. big issues.

  577. It may seem

  578. weedy some,

  579. but it says,

  580. until

  581. I went into

  582. the sanctuary

  583. of God,

  584. until I listened

  585. to what the word

  586. of God

  587. is showing me,

  588. until I listened

  589. to what the word

  590. of God

  591. is saying,

  592. everything

  593. seemed

  594. wearisome.

  595. And you see

  596. here,

  597. he is turning.

  598. He is turning

  599. to God.

  600. He is seeing

  601. that, yes,

  602. we've got our

  603. struggles,

  604. but God

  605. has answers,

  606. answers beyond

  607. anything that I

  608. can understand

  609. by myself.

  610. all I see

  611. is a little

  612. bit of God,

  613. until I come

  614. near to him

  615. and then I see

  616. the bigger

  617. picture.

  618. Turning it off

  619. always reminds me

  620. of the prodigal

  621. son.

  622. I mention him

  623. often,

  624. but when he

  625. comes to himself,

  626. he says,

  627. in my father's

  628. house are these

  629. hired hands

  630. and they have

  631. enough to eat,

  632. but I perish

  633. here with hunger,

  634. so I will

  635. rise and go

  636. to the father.

  637. It's the very

  638. same thing here.

  639. Until I went

  640. into the

  641. sanctuary of

  642. God,

  643. until I came

  644. back to God

  645. and saw

  646. within the

  647. fullness of

  648. all things,

  649. the wisdom

  650. that he has,

  651. the blessings

  652. that he is

  653. able to

  654. bestow.

  655. We're so

  656. often distracted

  657. in this world.

  658. You came in

  659. here tonight,

  660. you feel

  661. distracted.

  662. You feel

  663. there's so

  664. many things

  665. going on

  666. in your

  667. mind.

  668. There's so

  669. many things

  670. just clamoring

  671. for your

  672. attention,

  673. but wouldn't

  674. it be

  675. great if

  676. every time

  677. we came

  678. to worship

  679. God was

  680. a Sunday

  681. or a

  682. midweek or

  683. just in

  684. our own

  685. time,

  686. no distractions,

  687. nothing to

  688. take our

  689. focus away

  690. from God

  691. and just

  692. focus on

  693. his word.

  694. But the

  695. reality is

  696. that so

  697. often,

  698. even this

  699. evening,

  700. there's so

  701. much clutter

  702. in our

  703. minds.

  704. love

  705. to

  706. come.

  707. Isn't it

  708. good to

  709. come and

  710. draw near

  711. to him,

  712. to come

  713. into the

  714. sanctuary of

  715. God and

  716. to hear

  717. the word

  718. of God,

  719. to see

  720. God and

  721. the peace

  722. that he

  723. can give.

  724. God and

  725. God and

  726. turn to

  727. God and

  728. turn to

  729. himself.

  730. But remember

  731. what his

  732. role was.

  733. His role was a

  734. leader in

  735. worship.

  736. And so in

  737. turning himself,

  738. he is also

  739. pointing others.

  740. That's where it

  741. says at the

  742. very end of the

  743. psalm, that I

  744. may tell of

  745. all your

  746. works.

  747. That's what he's

  748. doing in this

  749. psalm, telling

  750. of all the

  751. wondrous

  752. works of

  753. God.

  754. So he's

  755. turning himself,

  756. he's causing

  757. others to

  758. turn.

  759. So we come

  760. here this

  761. night to

  762. this psalm

  763. written so

  764. many years

  765. ago and

  766. we are

  767. seeing our

  768. need to

  769. turn to

  770. God, a

  771. God who

  772. is good.

  773. He's focusing

  774. our attention

  775. on the

  776. fullness of

  777. God.

  778. If you've

  779. ever been on

  780. the ferry

  781. coming across

  782. the mints,

  783. you're sitting

  784. in any one

  785. of the number

  786. of places you

  787. can sit and

  788. there's somebody

  789. over at the

  790. window looking

  791. out.

  792. All of a

  793. sudden you

  794. start to

  795. hear gasps.

  796. Oh, they

  797. start to

  798. look.

  799. And all of

  800. a sudden

  801. people's

  802. attention is

  803. drawn in

  804. that direction.

  805. They're

  806. saying there

  807. must be

  808. something of

  809. interest over

  810. there.

  811. Maybe they're

  812. seeing dolphins

  813. jumping and

  814. all of a

  815. sudden people

  816. just gathering

  817. around wanting

  818. to see.

  819. How?

  820. Because someone

  821. was there to

  822. see it.

  823. Someone was

  824. looking in

  825. that direction

  826. and saw what

  827. was happening

  828. and starts

  829. to exclaim

  830. about what

  831. is happening.

  832. Other people

  833. come to

  834. see for

  835. themselves.

  836. That's what

  837. Asaph is

  838. doing here.

  839. He is

  840. looking to

  841. God and

  842. he's exclaiming,

  843. here is the

  844. God who

  845. is good.

  846. Will you

  847. not come

  848. and look

  849. for yourselves

  850. and see

  851. and know

  852. of this

  853. goodness?

  854. Turning,

  855. turning to

  856. him and

  857. seeing the

  858. fullness of

  859. God, the

  860. beauty of

  861. God.

  862. That is

  863. what we

  864. need.

  865. That's

  866. what he's

  867. pointing us

  868. towards.

  869. Turn,

  870. come,

  871. draw near.

  872. When

  873. everything

  874. seems

  875. wearisome

  876. as we

  877. see here,

  878. there's no

  879. answers until

  880. I come

  881. to God.

  882. So there's

  883. a need

  884. to come.

  885. The third

  886. and final

  887. thing we see

  888. here is

  889. where that

  890. leads us

  891. to and

  892. it's a

  893. sense of

  894. trusting in

  895. God.

  896. You see

  897. this in

  898. verse 23.

  899. It's a

  900. wonderful

  901. verse.

  902. Before that

  903. you come

  904. in verse

  905. 21.

  906. When my

  907. soul was

  908. embittered,

  909. when I was

  910. pricked in

  911. the heart,

  912. I was

  913. brutish

  914. and ignorant.

  915. I was

  916. like a

  917. beast

  918. towards you.

  919. He's

  920. recognizing

  921. himself

  922. here as

  923. one who

  924. had looked

  925. away from

  926. God.

  927. I was

  928. ignorant.

  929. I was

  930. brutish.

  931. I was

  932. arrogant.

  933. I was

  934. questioning

  935. all of

  936. these

  937. things.

  938. And that's

  939. the way

  940. we can

  941. end up.

  942. That's

  943. the way

  944. we can

  945. go

  946. ourselves.

  947. When we

  948. take our

  949. eyes off

  950. God,

  951. we end

  952. up brutish,

  953. ignorant,

  954. arrogant,

  955. all of

  956. these

  957. things.

  958. So what

  959. do we

  960. need to

  961. do?

  962. What do

  963. you need

  964. to do?

  965. Well,

  966. here are

  967. the words

  968. of verse

  969. 23,

  970. where you

  971. have this

  972. confidence.

  973. It's one

  974. of these

  975. turning

  976. points that

  977. you so

  978. often find

  979. in the

  980. Psalms.

  981. He's

  982. seeing a

  983. sin,

  984. and yet

  985. he realizes

  986. God is

  987. there.

  988. Nevertheless,

  989. I am

  990. continually

  991. with you.

  992. You hold

  993. my right

  994. hand.

  995. You guide

  996. me with

  997. your

  998. counsel,

  999. and

  1000. afterwards

  1001. you will

  1002. receive me

  1003. to glory.

  1004. What a

  1005. sense of

  1006. trust.

  1007. You see,

  1008. he has

  1009. discerned the

  1010. end of

  1011. the

  1012. wicked,

  1013. their

  1014. destruction.

  1015. But yet

  1016. he looks

  1017. to God,

  1018. he shows

  1019. his trust

  1020. in him.

  1021. I am

  1022. continually

  1023. with you.

  1024. You guide

  1025. me with

  1026. your

  1027. counsel,

  1028. you receive

  1029. me to

  1030. your glory.

  1031. There is

  1032. this confidence,

  1033. this trusting

  1034. in God,

  1035. the goodness

  1036. of God.

  1037. So when

  1038. we draw

  1039. near to

  1040. God,

  1041. we realize

  1042. just how

  1043. good he

  1044. is.

  1045. From

  1046. doubting

  1047. and

  1048. questioning

  1049. in verse

  1050. 16,

  1051. things that

  1052. seem too

  1053. hard to

  1054. understand,

  1055. such a

  1056. wearisome

  1057. task.

  1058. Now I

  1059. see,

  1060. now I

  1061. understand,

  1062. because I

  1063. have drawn

  1064. near to

  1065. God.

  1066. I am

  1067. worshiping

  1068. God in

  1069. the fullness

  1070. of him.

  1071. What he

  1072. does is he

  1073. realizes three

  1074. things.

  1075. He realizes

  1076. the future

  1077. of the

  1078. sinner in

  1079. verse 17

  1080. to 20.

  1081. Their end

  1082. is destruction.

  1083. And he

  1084. realizes the

  1085. foolishness of

  1086. self,

  1087. of just

  1088. looking to

  1089. himself.

  1090. When I

  1091. was embittered,

  1092. pricked in the

  1093. heart,

  1094. brutish,

  1095. like a

  1096. beast,

  1097. all of

  1098. these things.

  1099. He realized

  1100. the foolishness

  1101. of that.

  1102. But then he

  1103. realizes in

  1104. verse 23

  1105. to the end,

  1106. the fullness

  1107. of a

  1108. saviour.

  1109. The fullness

  1110. of one who

  1111. is able

  1112. to save.

  1113. I am in

  1114. your right

  1115. hand.

  1116. You are

  1117. guiding me.

  1118. And you

  1119. see all his

  1120. desires,

  1121. his desires

  1122. initially,

  1123. jealousy and

  1124. envy is

  1125. towards those

  1126. who are

  1127. prosperous.

  1128. What does

  1129. he realize

  1130. when he

  1131. sees the

  1132. fullness of

  1133. God?

  1134. In verse

  1135. 25,

  1136. whom have

  1137. I in the

  1138. heaven but

  1139. you?

  1140. And there

  1141. is nothing

  1142. on earth

  1143. that I

  1144. desire

  1145. besides

  1146. you.

  1147. There's this

  1148. wonderful

  1149. transformation.

  1150. Envy

  1151. towards the

  1152. wicked is

  1153. now no.

  1154. Nothing

  1155. compares to

  1156. the surpassing

  1157. worth of

  1158. knowing Christ

  1159. Jesus,

  1160. my Lord,

  1161. as Paul

  1162. puts it in

  1163. Philippians.

  1164. Nothing in

  1165. this world

  1166. compares to

  1167. you.

  1168. My flesh

  1169. and my

  1170. heart may

  1171. faint and

  1172. fail,

  1173. but you

  1174. are my

  1175. strength of

  1176. my heart

  1177. and my

  1178. portion

  1179. forever.

  1180. Everything

  1181. here is

  1182. pointing

  1183. towards the

  1184. fullness

  1185. of God.

  1186. Understanding

  1187. that fullness

  1188. of God

  1189. is good.

  1190. And

  1191. therefore he

  1192. says in

  1193. conclusion,

  1194. it is good

  1195. for me to

  1196. draw near

  1197. to you.

  1198. It is

  1199. good for

  1200. me to

  1201. come and

  1202. worship

  1203. you.

  1204. Rather than

  1205. turning away

  1206. when I don't

  1207. have answers,

  1208. I need to

  1209. come.

  1210. To come

  1211. and see

  1212. the end

  1213. of the

  1214. wicked.

  1215. To come

  1216. and see

  1217. the foolishness

  1218. of self

  1219. and to

  1220. come and

  1221. see the

  1222. fullness

  1223. of the

  1224. Savior and

  1225. offer in

  1226. Jesus

  1227. Christ.

  1228. So that

  1229. we might

  1230. understand

  1231. our end,

  1232. turn and

  1233. know the

  1234. life that

  1235. we have

  1236. in him.

  1237. And as

  1238. we turn,

  1239. he is

  1240. able to

  1241. bless.

  1242. Bless us

  1243. with that

  1244. peace,

  1245. bless us

  1246. with that

  1247. knowledge,

  1248. not always

  1249. with prosperity

  1250. and all of

  1251. these things

  1252. that the

  1253. wicked were

  1254. enjoying,

  1255. that he

  1256. was envious

  1257. of,

  1258. but blessed

  1259. with that

  1260. assurance

  1261. that you

  1262. will receive

  1263. me to

  1264. glory,

  1265. that you

  1266. will hold

  1267. me,

  1268. that you

  1269. will guide

  1270. me.

  1271. All of

  1272. these things

  1273. we are

  1274. blessed.

  1275. There was

  1276. a minister

  1277. by the

  1278. name of

  1279. Robert

  1280. Chapman,

  1281. a minister

  1282. in England

  1283. in the

  1284. 1800s.

  1285. One

  1286. morning as

  1287. he was

  1288. walking

  1289. along the

  1290. street,

  1291. he was

  1292. asked by

  1293. somebody,

  1294. how are

  1295. you?

  1296. And he

  1297. answered,

  1298. I'm

  1299. burdened

  1300. this

  1301. morning.

  1302. And the

  1303. man who

  1304. asked the

  1305. question

  1306. said,

  1307. but you

  1308. don't

  1309. look

  1310. burdened,

  1311. you look

  1312. as if

  1313. you're

  1314. full of

  1315. the

  1316. joys.

  1317. So how

  1318. are you

  1319. burdened?

  1320. He said,

  1321. well,

  1322. I have a

  1323. wonderful

  1324. burden.

  1325. It's an

  1326. overburden

  1327. of

  1328. blessings.

  1329. And he

  1330. said,

  1331. where do

  1332. you find

  1333. that?

  1334. And he

  1335. said,

  1336. well, I

  1337. find it

  1338. with God.

  1339. And I

  1340. find it

  1341. in the

  1342. words of

  1343. Psalm 68

    Psalms 68:19

  1344. verse 19,

  1345. who daily

  1346. with his

  1347. benefits

  1348. as

  1349. plenteously

  1350. doth

  1351. load.

  1352. The

  1353. Lord

  1354. burdens

  1355. !

  1356. But in

  1357. a way

  1358. of his

  1359. daily

  1360. benefits,

  1361. who daily

  1362. with his

  1363. benefits

  1364. as

  1365. plenteously

  1366. doth

  1367. load.

  1368. That there

  1369. are burdens

  1370. beyond

  1371. describing,

  1372. burdens

  1373. beyond

  1374. numbering.

  1375. The

  1376. Lord pours

  1377. out his

  1378. blessings

  1379. on us.

  1380. And to

  1381. know them,

  1382. what are

  1383. we to

  1384. do?

  1385. To

  1386. draw near

  1387. to him,

  1388. to come

  1389. to him

  1390. and see

  1391. and understand

  1392. and discern

  1393. all that

  1394. God

  1395. shows,

  1396. the end

  1397. of the

  1398. wicked,

  1399. but the

  1400. blessings

  1401. that are

  1402. ours

  1403. in

  1404. Christ.

  1405. So he

  1406. goes through

  1407. this

  1408. pilgrimage,

  1409. a time

  1410. of toiling,

  1411. a time

  1412. of questioning,

  1413. but a

  1414. turning

  1415. to the

  1416. Lord.

  1417. And then

  1418. this

  1419. trust,

  1420. nevertheless,

  1421. continually,

  1422. I am

  1423. with you.

  1424. You do

  1425. hold me

  1426. by my

  1427. right hand.

  1428. You guide

  1429. me by

  1430. your

  1431. counsel,

  1432. and

  1433. afterwards,

  1434. you will

  1435. receive me

  1436. to glory.

  1437. He loads

  1438. us with

  1439. his benefits.

  1440. So may

  1441. we find

  1442. in all

  1443. our

  1444. questions,

  1445. in all

  1446. the challenges

  1447. that we

  1448. have,

  1449. the fullness

  1450. of God,

  1451. and look

  1452. to him,

  1453. and see

  1454. that in

  1455. the midst

  1456. of everything

  1457. that goes

  1458. on around

  1459. us,

  1460. he shows

  1461. us the

  1462. end of

  1463. the wicked,

  1464. but the

  1465. end that

  1466. is ours

  1467. who

  1468. trust in

  1469. him.

  1470. Let us

  1471. pray.

  1472. Lord,

  1473. our

  1474. gracious

  1475. God,

  1476. we thank

  1477. you that

  1478. you are

  1479. indeed a

  1480. God who

  1481. loads us

  1482. with your

  1483. benefits on

  1484. a daily

  1485. basis,

  1486. that you

  1487. are one

  1488. who we

  1489. can come

  1490. to with

  1491. all things,

  1492. all our

  1493. cares,

  1494. all our

  1495. questions,

  1496. even the

  1497. questions that

  1498. feel

  1499. wearisome

  1500. to us,

  1501. and we

  1502. can find

  1503. our

  1504. understanding

  1505. when we

  1506. draw near

  1507. to you.

  1508. And may

  1509. you guide

  1510. us,

  1511. Lord,

  1512. by your

  1513. counsel.

  1514. May you

  1515. remind us

  1516. of your

  1517. continual

  1518. presence.

  1519. May you

  1520. hold us

  1521. by your

  1522. right hand,

  1523. and may

  1524. you keep

  1525. us for

  1526. all of

  1527. our days

  1528. and all

  1529. of eternity.

  1530. Lord,

  1531. we look

  1532. to you,

  1533. we seek

  1534. your

  1535. blessing,

  1536. we seek

  1537. your face,

  1538. your peace

  1539. upon us,

  1540. as all we

  1541. ask,

  1542. we ask

  1543. in Jesus'

  1544. name.

  1545. Amen.

  1546. Amen.

  1547. We're

  1548. going to

  1549. conclude

  1550. singing

  1551. some of

  1552. these

  1553. verses

  1554. in

  1555. Psalm 73

  1556. in the

  1557. Scottish

  1558. Psalter,

  1559. page

  1560. 316.

  1561. We'll

  1562. sing from

  1563. verse 23

  1564. to verse

  1565. 26.

  1566. Psalm 73

  1567. on page

  1568. 316.

  1569. Nevertheless,

  1570. continually,

  1571. O Lord,

  1572. I am with

  1573. thee,

  1574. thou dost

  1575. me hold

  1576. by my

  1577. right hand

  1578. and still

  1579. upholdest

  1580. me.

  1581. We'll

  1582. sing

  1583. four stanzas

  1584. to God's

  1585. praise.

  1586. Never

  1587. the

  1588. less

  1589. continually,

  1590. O

  1591. Lord,

  1592. I am

  1593. with

  1594. thee,

  1595. thou

  1596. dost

  1597. me hold

  1598. by my

  1599. right hand

  1600. and still

  1601. upholdest

  1602. me.

  1603. The

  1604. width

  1605. I

  1606. can

  1607. step

  1608. while

  1609. I

  1610. live

  1611. !

  1612. Let

  1613. be

  1614. strong

  1615. !

  1616. God

  1617. can

  1618. guide

  1619. and

  1620. to

  1621. thy

  1622. glory

  1623. afterward

  1624. receive

  1625. me

  1626. to

  1627. abide.

  1628. !

  1629. may

  1630. may

  1631. may

  1632. !

1633. Besides, to there is none.

1634. My flesh and heart doth faint and fail,

1635. but God doth fail me never.

1636. For of my heart all is the strength and portion forever.

1637. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right.

1638. We'll close in the benediction.

1639. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

1640. rest upon and abide with you all, now and forevermore.

  1641. Amen.

  1642. Amen.

  1643. Thank you.
