  1. Well, in um April 2000, Britney Spears

  2. released a successful pop song called

  3. Oops, I Did It Again. It's a song about

  4. how she led a guy to believe she was in

  5. love with him, but she wasn't. And she

  6. Did It More Than Once, hence Oops! I Did

  7. It Again. That's a line that uh if it

  8. had been written 4,000 years ago,

  9. wouldn't have been out of place on

  10. Abraham's lips. Although of course the

  11. gravity of his failing would seem to

  12. demand more than a lighthearted oops.

  13. But he had done it again. A very similar

  14. scenario had played out when he visited

  15. Egypt about 25 years earlier. In fact,

  16. some scholars suggest that perhaps this

  17. is an account that is is is not a

  18. separate one, but it's just a repeat and

  19. maybe the book editors have got a bit

  20. muddled up and put it in twice. But

  21. actually on closer inspection you can

  22. see there are a number of differences uh

  23. between that account and this occasion.

  24. So that we can see it was a different

  25. occasion. And we see by Abraham's own

  26. admission in verse 13 that this was his

  27. and Sarah's own practice. There was this

  28. was their agreed practice. Wherever they

  29. went they felt threatened. This is what

  30. they did. So what we have here is a

  31. repeated failure to trust God. So let's

  32. begin in our first point. A

  33. disappointing move.

  34. The opening words of chapter 20 are a

  35. bit obscure. From there

  36. Abraham journeyed and we're left

  37. thinking from where? Um probably memory.

  38. Uh the good news translations takes

  39. takes the liberty of inserting uh memory

  40. into the text though it's not actually

  41. there but it's probably where where they

  42. had been. He'd spent a lot of time in

  43. that region. They built an altar there.

  44. So chapter 13:18. So Abraham moved his

  45. tent and came and settled by the oaks of

  46. Mamry which are at Hebrron. And there he

  47. built an altar to the Lord. It was ma at

  48. memory that the Lord had appeared to

  49. Abraham and graciously restored Sarah's

  50. flagging faith. It was at that place

  51. that he had promised this time next year

  52. Sarah will be with child. you'll have a

  53. child and you'll have Isaac. And it was

  54. there that Abraham had prayed for mercy

  55. for Sodom. So, it's a fair assumption to

  56. say it was from that place, his home,

  57. the place where he was used to

  58. worshiping the Lord, the place of

  59. sacrifice

  60. and meeting the Lord in special ways.

  61. It's from that place that Abraham moves

  62. away from. And we observe a similar

  63. pattern in the earlier parallel account

  64. back in chapter 12:8. Abraham had

  65. settled in another place, a place east

  66. of Bethl. He built an altar there as

  67. well. He worshiped the Lord there. And

  68. then this famine hit and he traveled to

  69. Egypt and the whole disastrous affair

  70. unfolds there. After they've been found

  71. out, it would all come to light. Uh, and

  72. he gets Sarah back. Then in chapter

  73. 13:3, he traveled back to where he' come

  74. from, back to the altar, back to the

  75. place of worship. And we noted when we

  76. looked at that passage, uh, his journey

  77. which resulted from a lack of faith took

  78. him away from the promised land, away

  79. from worship. But once he's been

  80. restored, he came back and he enjoyed

  81. renewed worship, renewed fellowship with

  82. the Lord again. And I do have to wonder

  83. if something similar is happening in

  84. this passage again.

  85. It had this amazing encounter with the

  86. Lord. He literally whined and dined. the

  87. Lord and his angels. He'd received

  88. promises from the Lord. And the Lord had

  89. shared his very thoughts, his plans with

  90. Abraham.

  91. Abraham was allowed to plead for mercy.

  92. And the Lord heard and agreed, yes, he

  93. would save Sodom, the whole place, if 10

  94. righteous were found. But as we saw last

  95. week, there was only one righteous man,

  96. Lot. So whilst Lot was saved, Sodom and

  97. Gomorrah were judged. And you have to

  98. think, how did that affect Abraham? As

  99. he woke up, as he saw the smoke rising,

  100. did he even know if his nephew Lot has

  101. was still alive when he saw that? What

  102. was he thinking?

  103. Perhaps he felt disillusioned.

  104. Perhaps he felt disappointed. Perhaps he

  105. even felt disappointed with God that

  106. this had happened.

  107. That is speculation. But what we do know

  108. is right after this has happened, he

  109. packs up his bags and he leaves that

  110. place, that special place. He heads back

  111. in the direction of Egypt. Doesn't go

  112. all the way, but he moves verse one to

  113. the NB. That was a hot, dry, parched

  114. area. And we might want to see some

  115. spiritual significance in there. Perhaps

  116. perhaps it is.

  117. He goes from the place of meeting with

  118. God to this dry parched land.

  119. And I I wonder if that is the same for

  120. us when things don't turn out in the way

  121. that we thought they would, in the way

  122. that we hoped,

  123. when things are tough,

  124. when things aren't going our way, we're

  125. struggling, things are hard, what what

  126. is the natural inclination?

  127. Some people take a break from church,

  128. don't we? Oh, I can't I can't face

  129. going.

  130. Can I urge you don't do that?

  131. When things are tough,

  132. that is precisely when we need to be

  133. meeting with the Lord and his people all

  134. the more. Because it's when times are

  135. tough, we're struggling. We can't pray

  136. for ourselves. We can't cope. Our

  137. thinking probably isn't very clear. We

  138. need to be amongst God's people who can

  139. come alongside us, love us, help us,

  140. support us, and pray for us. Retreating

  141. from church and from God and his people,

  142. it doesn't help.

  143. Well, certainly what follows

  144. in this account would tie in with him

  145. moving away from the Lord, a distancing

  146. from the Lord. is still technically in

  147. the promised land, but it is moving away

  148. from that safe place into a place that's

  149. potentially dangerous, the land of the

  150. Philistines.

  151. Some habits are good, aren't they? Like

  152. going for regular exercise, that's a

  153. good habit if you're in that um that

  154. habit. Some habits really don't matter

  155. at all. Whether you have your coffee at

  156. 10 or 11, it's not a big deal, is it?

  157. But some habits are bad, like eating

  158. lots of sweets.

  159. It's been 25 years since his disastrous

  160. escapades in Egypt, but his old habits

  161. haven't been left behind. Despite his

  162. growth in faith and his growth in

  163. experience of the Lord, when he gets

  164. into a tight spot, Abraham falls back

  165. into his old habits of self-rust and

  166. lack of faith. And that can be the same

  167. for many of us. We can think we we've

  168. come so far in our Christian walk. You

  169. know, we we look back and we think,

  170. "Yeah, I'm I'm I'm much more mature than

  171. I used to be."

  172. And we think we've conquered that

  173. particular sin. We can strike that one

  174. off the list. I'm I'm I'm really feeling

  175. quite holy now. You know, I I I think

  176. I'm doing all right. And then suddenly,

  177. there it is out of nowhere. Oops. You

  178. did it again.

  179. How utterly disheartening that can be,

  180. can't it?

  181. Just when you thought you had outgrown

  182. that sin, the lustful desire reemerges.

  183. Your lack of mercy strikes again. The

  184. pride slips back in. The half truth

  185. slips out or the anger erupts like a

  186. damn burst.

  187. Um, there's a quote that might appear on

  188. the screen. It was by a British pastor.

  189. I'd never heard of him. uh but it was it

  190. featured in a commentary and I thought

  191. it was quite helpful. A guy called Alan

  192. Redpath once said, "The conversion of a

  193. soul is the miracle of a moment. The

  194. manufacturer of a saint is the task of a

  195. lifetime." I think that's quite helpful,

  196. isn't it? [laughter] The the conversion

  197. of a soul is the miracle of a moment.

  198. The manufacturer of a saint is the task

  199. of a lifetime.

  200. And that's not to excuse our sin and our

  201. failings.

  202. But although we are new creatures in

  203. Christ, we will find that there is this

  204. old man. The old flesh is still there

  205. with us. The roots of sin go deep like

  206. bindweed in your garden. You think

  207. you've got it all, but it comes back.

  208. And that's why we are to put to death

  209. sin. Not tolerate it, not play with it.

  210. That's why we put on our spiritual armor

  211. daily. Not just on special occasions,

  212. not just for Sunday. I'm going to

  213. church. I need to, you know, look like

  214. I'm I'm holy. That's why we seek the

  215. Lord and we keep close to the Lord and

  216. we ask for his help and his strength at

  217. all times. And that's also why we need

  218. to be realistic with ourselves. If you

  219. know

  220. that you struggle with a certain thing

  221. or you have historically struggled with

  222. a certain thing, it's wise to take

  223. precautions against it. Don't give

  224. yourself an inch for you will take the

  225. mile.

  226. We'll just have to try and filter out

  227. the uh exciting music coming from next

  228. door.

  229. Uh the point I'm trying to say is we can

  230. be particularly vulnerable to old sinful

  231. ways, especially at times of stress or

  232. or when we began to wander away from a

  233. day daily close walk with the Lord at

  234. those pressure points. We can revert

  235. back to old habits.

  236. Here when Abraham's in danger, he

  237. reverts back to his old sinful way of

  238. doing things. rather than seeking the

  239. Lord's help, rather than relying on the

  240. Lord, he tells a halftruth and he falls

  241. back into [music]

  242. deception.

  243. But I suppose it's only fair to ask, did

  244. Abraham actually have any reason to

  245. trust God? I mean, had God given him

  246. given him any reason to trust him

  247. anyway, or are we being a bit unfair on

  248. him? But he did. God had given Abraham

  249. many promises about the future. He just

  250. promised Abraham and Sarah would have a

  251. son this time next year. So Abraham

  252. should know if he's believed that he is

  253. safe until at least this time next year,

  254. isn't he? Because he's God's promised

  255. him a son.

  256. So he did have reason to think, "Yeah,

  257. God is not going to let anything happen

  258. to me at this point." But not only that,

  259. God has said back in chapter 15:1, "Fear

  260. not Abraham, I am your shield."

  261. So Abraham actually had good reasons to

  262. trust God. But in the face of fear,

  263. Abraham's faith fails. He heads off in a

  264. disappointing direction away from God,

  265. back to his old habits.

  266. And there's just a reminder there. Don't

  267. move away from God in difficult times.

  268. Move towards him. Seek him. Make him

  269. your refuge and your help. The Psalms

  270. are full of it, aren't they? You are my

  271. refuge. Suddenly, when the hard times

  272. hit us, we forget that and we go, "Whoa,

  273. I need I need a refuge." He is our

  274. refuge.

  275. But as sad as Abraham's move is, I do

  276. wonder whether it's actually a little

  277. bit of a comfort for us. For

  278. who of us

  279. has not done this

  280. again and again and again? Who of us

  281. have not failed time after time?

  282. If the father of faith could mess up in

  283. some way, in the same way and yet God is

  284. still merciful

  285. and still so full of grace. I know we we

  286. don't want to downplay sin. We'll see

  287. that the mess that sin makes. Yet to

  288. know if if we sin even repeatedly that

  289. that [music] doesn't mean it's game

  290. over, that God has given up on us. That

  291. is a real comfort for those of us who

  292. have fallen

  293. again.

  294. Do not have to despair if you've fallen

  295. again. There is still grace. Christian,

  296. your sin does not get the last word.

  297. So Abraham is heading in a disappointing

  298. direction away from God and away from

  299. faithfilled actions. He's gone back to

  300. the old halftruth and it gets him into

  301. the same old problems as we'll see in

  302. the next point, a nighttime encounter.

  303. One of the big arguments people make

  304. against God

  305. is if he is good

  306. and loving and all powerful, why is

  307. there so much suffering in the world?

  308. And that's not an easy question, is it?

  309. We would probably struggled with that to

  310. some degree ourselves. Not not quite

  311. understanding why things are as they

  312. are. Why doesn't God do something? It's

  313. it's a hard question and we we have to

  314. there's no quick easy answer. There are

  315. answers, but there's no quick and easy

  316. answer. It needs to be carefully

  317. unpicked and thought about. There's many

  318. different factors that are involved in

  319. the answering of that big question, most

  320. of which are beyond the scope of this

  321. morning. But one of the answers is is

  322. that God allows suffering because it's

  323. the way he lets us know things are wrong

  324. in the world. So when we move away from

  325. God, we move away from truth and

  326. righteousness and life and goodness

  327. and we are alerted to that by the things

  328. that happen. So pain alerts you to an

  329. issue. If you've got a thorn in your

  330. foot and you're treading on it, pain,

  331. it's painful, but that that's a good

  332. thing in that it alerts you to there's

  333. there's something wrong and you need to

  334. deal with it. As CS Lewis said, pain is

  335. God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

  336. But in that question about God and

  337. suffering is the assumption that God

  338. isn't actually doing anything. He's just

  339. sitting there letting it all happen. And

  340. I think that is also a wrong assumption.

  341. God is not completely inactive in the

  342. world and suffering in in all the things

  343. that are happening. As our passage

  344. clearly shows, God does in fact step in

  345. and restrain people and situations.

  346. So the sin that we see talked about in

  347. the Bible, the sin that we see in our

  348. world, it is horrific. It can be

  349. absolutely unthinkably awful. And yet

  350. God doesn't always allow things to be as

  351. bad as they could be.

  352. He does work behind the scenes to

  353. restrain evil and sin. But the thing is,

  354. unless he specifically reveals that to

  355. us, we are often completely unaware of

  356. what God is doing in the world or in our

  357. lives. Putting the brakes on, stopping

  358. that, stopping that, stopping that

  359. because we don't see, we don't see

  360. everything. We don't have all the

  361. answers.

  362. So, Abraham had stopped at Ger.

  363. Apparently, that was an important city

  364. on the border between Canaan and Egypt.

  365. It had a king whose name or perhaps uh

  366. something title was Aimilec. Uh and by

  367. this point Abraham was a tribal leader.

  368. He had a reputation of being wealthy and

  369. powerful. He was a powerful military

  370. figure. He's moved into the area and no

  371. doubt he had a reputation that preceded

  372. him. And so when Abraham comes visiting

  373. Aimilec is keen to form some kind of

  374. alliance with this man. this man who has

  375. a almost princely status

  376. and treaties and alliances were often

  377. cemented by marriage. Unfortunately, as

  378. we know, Abraham didn't have any

  379. daughters or sons at all. But thankfully

  380. for Aimilec, Abraham did have this

  381. sister. Okay? And that explains why even

  382. when Sarah is 90 now, Aimilec is still

  383. keen to take her as his wife. So even if

  384. we take into account the idea that in

  385. those days the the lifespan of the

  386. patriarchs were was stretched out. They

  387. lived for a lot longer than than we do.

  388. So by this point Sarah even if we say

  389. well she's more akin to a woman in her

  390. late 50s by modern standards she is

  391. still ah I'm going to get into trouble

  392. here but she's still quite old. Let's

  393. say that she's way beyond childbearing

  394. age and Aimilec had a wife and a harim

  395. and so he didn't actually need her. Um,

  396. additionally, unlike in Egypt, there's

  397. no mention made of her outstanding

  398. beauty. Um, here I'm sure she was still

  399. a fine and handsome woman. Um, but this

  400. seems to be much more of a politically

  401. motivated marriage. And if she was still

  402. highly attractive, well, that's just a

  403. bonus. That's the the cream on the

  404. cherry on top, isn't it? So, Aimilec

  405. takes her for his own and Abraham and

  406. Sarah play along.

  407. And you have to think, what were they

  408. thinking

  409. by their sin? Once again, they

  410. jeopardize all of the Lord's promises to

  411. them. Do you see? They've just been

  412. promised this son, and now they're

  413. giving her away to be the wife of

  414. another man.

  415. Now, God does allow us to sin.

  416. God does allow us to choose ways which

  417. take us away from him. People,

  418. Christians included, often have to live

  419. with the consequences

  420. of unwise and sinful choices.

  421. But from the passage, we see that God

  422. does at times intervene. This is one of

  423. those times that we clearly see God

  424. intervenes in a special way to prevent

  425. this sin coming [music]

  426. to to its full fruition.

  427. So why doesn't God do anything about all

  428. the bad things in the world? Well, the

  429. answer is sometimes he does.

  430. We just don't necessarily know it all

  431. the time. But here we do. Here we're

  432. told clearly what's going on. So God

  433. appears to Aimilec in a dream. And that

  434. might get us thinking, well, does God

  435. still um speak through dreams? Well, he

  436. can. And there are reports of God

  437. appearing to people or Jesus appearing

  438. to people in in their dreams even today.

  439. So, I wouldn't want to say that never

  440. happens. But we do have to be aware it's

  441. certainly not common place even in the

  442. Bible. It's rare. Okay. Um, and if God

  443. speaks in a dream, it seems to me that

  444. people know there is something

  445. significant in that dream. They know

  446. something has happened. So if you are

  447. dreaming something and you're thinking,

  448. "Ah, maybe this is from the Lord, I

  449. would suggest if you have to ask the

  450. question, it probably isn't."

  451. When people receive dreams from the

  452. Lord, it seems clear the dream is of a

  453. different order.

  454. In norm normal circumstances, we have

  455. God's word and that is God's revelation

  456. to us. That is where we meet God, where

  457. how we see God.

  458. But there might just be rare occasions

  459. when specific and urgent communication

  460. is needed as is here. So verse three,

  461. but God came to Aimilec in a dream by

  462. night and said to him, behold, you are a

  463. dead man because of the woman you have

  464. taken, for she is a man's wife. And we

  465. see in verse four, the relationship

  466. hasn't been consumated. And so Aimilec,

  467. he he acted in a with a clean

  468. conscience.

  469. But despite that, God is not happy about

  470. someone taking another man's wife, even

  471. in ignorance. Ignorance is is taken into

  472. account.

  473. But it doesn't nullify that a wrong has

  474. been done.

  475. If you break the law, even if you didn't

  476. know it was a law, you've still broken

  477. the law. And marriage is a serious

  478. business. Our our culture devalues

  479. marriage.

  480. Tries to reduce it to a mere piece of

  481. paper or just a temporary arrangement

  482. that could be changed on demand. But

  483. marriage is instituted by God when he

  484. gave Eve to Adam. And in Mark chapter

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  485. 10, we see that a joining takes place

  486. where God in some way joins two into one

  487. flesh. I'm pointing this out so that

  488. young and old here know marriage matters

  489. to God. It's not just a private thing.

  490. It's not just a human thing. It matters

  491. to God.

  492. So much so that in Aimilec's case to

  493. keep Sarah would cost him his life.

  494. That's what sin does.

  495. It kills.

  496. Just as God warned Adam, if you eat from

  497. that tree, you will die. So here, if you

  498. keep the girl, you will die.

  499. Why? End of verse three, for she is a

  500. man's wife.

  501. If someone is married,

  502. we need to be aware they are off the

  503. market.

  504. Stay away.

  505. Even Aimilec knew this when he

  506. challenges Abraham later on. He says

  507. verse 9, "You did things that ought not

  508. to be done."

  509. Perhaps this all seems a bit harsh on

  510. Aimilec. After all, Aim, he he didn't

  511. know he was sinning by taking her. But

  512. actually, what we see here is God's

  513. grace, real grace to him.

  514. God warns Aimilec in a dream. That is a

  515. rare and and great honor in itself. God

  516. appears to him in a dream. And at this

  517. point, Aimilec is is ill. So, he needs

  518. healing. verse 17 because of Sarah. So

  519. he's in a is is not well but God doesn't

  520. just leave him to die not knowing

  521. he appears he tells him what the issue

  522. is and what will happen and what what to

  523. do about that. So, so that is that's

  524. kindness. Aimilec, there's this

  525. situation. This is what you've done.

  526. This is the problem. That's what's going

  527. to happen. And this is what you need to

  528. do about that. That's grace.

  529. It's the same for us. We have the

  530. gospel. And at first, it doesn't seem

  531. like good news. All people are sinners.

  532. You think, "Oh, crumbs, that's hard,

  533. isn't it?" And the wages of sin is

  534. death. You think, "Oh, crumbs, that's

  535. really hard." But the gospel is good

  536. news because God has warned us. And like

  537. Aimilec, he gives us the chance to

  538. repent.

  539. the chance to live.

  540. And notice, God recognizes Aimilec's

  541. situation

  542. and he's been actively working in his

  543. situation, restraining him from fully

  544. sinning.

  545. If you find yourself in a situation and

  546. it's frustrating and this thing you want

  547. so much just doesn't seem to be

  548. happening,

  549. the relationship that you you're pushing

  550. for, the job that you think you you

  551. deserve or should be yours, the the

  552. house that you you dream about, the

  553. opportunity that you're going for, and

  554. you're you're pushing for it, and you're

  555. pushing for it, and you think, "Why

  556. isn't God giving me this? What, you

  557. know, what's going on? What? What's the

  558. problem here? Pause for a moment and

  559. consider

  560. just perhaps God could be intervening to

  561. restrain you for your own good.

  562. Perhaps there's things about what

  563. whatever it is you're striving for that

  564. you don't know, ramifications that you

  565. haven't appreciated.

  566. This isn't an excuse to shy away from

  567. hard work and persevering and overcoming

  568. obstacles and doing great things even

  569. when it's difficult. But but Christian,

  570. if it feels like the road is constantly

  571. blocked, it would be wise to pause

  572. and to seek the Lord about it. Because

  573. sometimes, like with Balam's ass, God

  574. sends things to get in the way and

  575. prevent certain actions.

  576. So in grace, Aimilec had been warned and

  577. and now it was time for a response, time

  578. to take action. And we'll look at that

  579. in our final point, a daytime encounter.

  580. Well, clearly this dream would have been

  581. shocking to Aimilec.

  582. It hadn't occurred to him that what he

  583. was doing by taking Sarah was was wrong

  584. at all. But with the threat of death

  585. hanging over him, it's hard to imagine

  586. how Aimilec got any sleep at all that

  587. night.

  588. Maybe that contributes to why he got up

  589. early in the morning. He didn't want to

  590. delay over this important matter. It

  591. needed to be dealt with. And do you know

  592. that reminds us of Abraham in his better

  593. moments? Do you remember a long time ago

  594. now? We thought about how Abraham was

  595. given the command to circumcise all all

  596. the men in his camp. And we remember we

  597. saw there um we might have been tempted

  598. to to just delay that bit. We'll just

  599. yeah let's just think about that. Let's

  600. uh take a few days to you know plan that

  601. one out. But actually we read early in

  602. the morning he did it straight away.

  603. Likewise we're going to see when he's

  604. told to take his precious only son Isaac

  605. off to sacrifice in Genesis 22:3

    Genesis 22:3

  606. in the morning that there's no delay.

  607. He's straight at it.

  608. That's Abraham in his better moments.

  609. Aimilec here, he knows the Lord has

  610. spoken and he's quick to obey.

  611. And there is a challenge there, isn't

  612. there? Because how often we tarry over

  613. these things.

  614. If the Lord is clearly speaking to you

  615. about something,

  616. don't delay.

  617. Take action. If the Lord is calling you

  618. to repent from some sin

  619. and you you know it but you you're

  620. finding it hard, don't delay. If the

  621. Lord is challenging you about your

  622. prayer life

  623. or your Bible reading or your attitude

  624. to something,

  625. but you keep making excuses,

  626. don't delay. If the Lord is convicting

  627. you that you really should be serving

  628. him in some way, doing something, you

  629. hear the call for, you know, I don't

  630. know, volunteers or whatever, and you

  631. think, yeah, I probably should, but and

  632. then you you kind of make your excuses.

  633. Why are you delaying?

  634. Aimilec knows he needs to act and so he

  635. does. He shares the situation with his

  636. servants or advisers and they take God

  637. seriously. Why? Because they're afraid.

  638. They realize we are dealing with a being

  639. a power that we can't fight against.

  640. Which is interesting because Aimilec

  641. confronts when Aimilec confronts Abraham

  642. later and asks him why you why have you

  643. done what you did? Abraham says it's

  644. because he thought there was no fear of

  645. God in that place and he was afraid of

  646. the people,

  647. not God. Do you see that? The irony

  648. here, the pagans fear God, and God's

  649. chosen man fears the people, not God.

  650. I suppose we could make a little link

  651. back to the spotlight next Sunday

  652. evening. The idea of living to please

  653. people. It's it's powerful actually. If

  654. we don't understand what's going on,

  655. that can be our master.

  656. It's important to recognize these

  657. things.

  658. If Abraham had feared God more than

  659. people, he wouldn't have lied. he

  660. wouldn't have got himself into this

  661. situation. A Christian, perhaps your

  662. spiritual life is stalled because you're

  663. too busy fearing

  664. people, what they might say, what they

  665. might what might happen. We're trying to

  666. please people. Keep that person happy.

  667. Keep that. I've got to do that because

  668. that person expects me to do that.

  669. When what we should be doing is looking

  670. to our God, beholding him, delighting

  671. ourselves in him, saying, "He is my God.

  672. He's my reason for living. Yes, I've got

  673. to love these people and serve them, but

  674. first of all, it is God. God first.

  675. But to make matters worse, it wasn't

  676. that Abraham came along to his people

  677. and and had a reason to actually fear

  678. them. He just assumed. He made the

  679. assumption. He made a rash and incorrect

  680. judgment about Aimilec and his people.

  681. And that maybe is a warning for us, too.

  682. Just because someone isn't a Christian,

  683. it doesn't mean they don't have any

  684. morals.

  685. doesn't mean they are completely

  686. corrupt.

  687. If if if that's our thinking, we're

  688. going to get very confused when we go

  689. out into the world and we discover h do

  690. you know what? There's someone who isn't

  691. a Christian, but they're actually better

  692. behaved than some Christians I know. And

  693. we think, how do I deal with that?

  694. You know, all people are made in the

  695. image of God. And though every aspect of

  696. that has been defaced and is marred and

  697. is affected by sin. So every aspect of

  698. our being is affected by sin. And yet

  699. there is still something of God about

  700. all people. We have a conscience. We

  701. have a moral sense.

  702. And so we shouldn't be surprised when we

  703. see morality and other good things even

  704. in those who don't know God.

  705. Morally it's obvious who comes out on

  706. top here. It's Aimilec, isn't it? All

  707. the way. Which is shocking really. You

  708. know what's at the heart of Abraham's

  709. failure is he he's not fearing God. He's

  710. not trusting God. He's underestimated

  711. his God. He thinks God is not going to

  712. be able to look after him. He can't

  713. trust himself to God. He knew the

  714. promises of God, but he chose not to

  715. trust in God when he found there was

  716. disappointments or confusion. Confusion.

  717. God did things he didn't like or didn't

  718. understand. and he's like, "Well, I I

  719. don't know how to deal with that. So, I

  720. don't know if I can trust God." That can

  721. be the same for us.

  722. God's all right for the spiritual stuff,

  723. but for the real stuff, you know, I

  724. don't think I can really trust God.

  725. And when he doesn't trust God for the

  726. real life issues, but chooses to sin

  727. instead, that's when it goes wrong for

  728. him. And when we don't trust God, when

  729. we won't follow him because we think

  730. it's a bit scary, a bit dangerous, when

  731. we take the shortcut, that's not actions

  732. that come out of faith.

  733. They come out of unbelief.

  734. It's embarrassing. Abraham, this great

  735. figure of the Bible, has been shown up

  736. by Aimilec, who has comparatively little

  737. knowledge of God. And when Abraham gives

  738. his excuses, they all seem rather weak.

  739. And all he can do is assure aim. Oh, you

  740. know, this isn't personal. Verse 13, we

  741. do this everywhere. Well, great. Thanks

  742. for, you know, letting us know.

  743. But even after Abraham's weak excuses,

  744. Aimilec acts with grace. He honors

  745. Abraham. Presumably, he does that for

  746. the sake of the God who for some reason

  747. has chosen Abraham. Aimilec can look at

  748. this situation and go, "Well, I'm not

  749. that impressed with Abraham, but I'm

  750. impressed with his God, so he honors

  751. Abraham because of his God."

  752. Verse 14, he blesses him and showers

  753. Abraham with animals and slaves. He

  754. allows Abraham to live anywhere he wants

  755. in the land. He returns Sarah. Aimilec

  756. even seems to think more about Sarah's

  757. honor than her own husband does. He

  758. gives this generous gift of a thousand

  759. shekels which is so much money that it

  760. would have taken several lifetimes to to

  761. earn that amount. Now we're looking at

  762. that and thinking I don't know really

  763. how that vindicates Sarah but apparently

  764. in that culture in that context it did.

  765. That was to vindicate her so everyone

  766. would know she is innocent. She did not

  767. sin here.

  768. It's funny. It's like this pagan king is

  769. showing Abraham this is how to live a

  770. godly life. This is how to live a

  771. gracious life. I don't know if Aimilec

  772. was saved, but he certainly had some

  773. sort of life-changing encounter with God

  774. and affected what he did.

  775. But I can't help but think right at this

  776. point, Abraham's feeling seriously

  777. red-faced and rebu rebuked.

  778. After all, he is the recipient of all

  779. these amazing promises to God. He knows

  780. kings are going to come from him. But

  781. right now, this Canaanite king seems to

  782. be more in line with God than he is.

  783. Oops.

  784. But it's it's true, isn't it? God

  785. chooses to save us. If you're a

  786. Christian here, God chooses to save us

  787. not because we are better than other

  788. people, not because we were morally

  789. superior, not because we had it all

  790. together. and he looked at us and said,

  791. "Oh, they're a thoroughly decent person.

  792. I'm going to save them." He chooses to

  793. save us because of his grace.

  794. And in grace, God still allows Abraham,

  795. despite his failings, he still allows

  796. Abraham to bless Aimilec.

  797. Abraham may have failed, but he's called

  798. upon to pray. And God graciously hears

  799. the prayer and heals Aimilec and his

  800. family. And despite it all, God still

  801. blesses Abraham through Aimilec.

  802. I don't know what lapses in faith

  803. you have

  804. had in this last week or two.

  805. I don't know how many times you've gone

  806. back to your old ways recently.

  807. I don't know what mess you have made of

  808. everything.

  809. Perhaps you've trodden some pretty

  810. shameful paths. Perhaps you've done

  811. things no Christian should do.

  812. And yet there is no situation that God

  813. cannot redeem.

  814. There is no situation that God's grace

  815. cannot penetrate.

  816. And God is working throughout this whole

  817. episode in grace upon grace.

  818. He warns Aimilec about the danger and

  819. the sin he's in. Amazingly, he calls his

  820. Aimilec to bless Abraham. Despite

  821. Abraham's certainly not deserving any

  822. blessing, he graciously answers

  823. Abraham's prayer, reaffirming to

  824. Abraham, despite your failure, Abraham,

  825. despite you doing these stupid things,

  826. he graciously answers his prayer. And

  827. and by that is saying, I'm still your

  828. God. I will still hear you. I will still

  829. answer you. It's not that we should ever

  830. take our sin lightly, you know, Britney

  831. Spears style. Oops, I did it again. No.

  832. When we we've seen that when we sin, it

  833. it messes things up. It hurts people. It

  834. hurts us. It's against God. We've seen

  835. the warning God gives. Sin deserves

  836. death. But when we sin, that doesn't

  837. have to be the end. For those in Christ,

  838. despite us not deserving it, there is

  839. grace upon grace. How amazing that God

  840. doesn't treat us as our sins deserve.

  841. How amazing that in Christ we have every

  842. spiritual blessing.

  843. How amazing that God sets his love on

  844. sinners like us. Was Abraham worthy?

  845. No. Are you worthy?

  846. No. But how gracious God chooses to set

  847. his love upon us. How gracious that God

  848. chooses to use imperfect people like us.

  849. And in Christ, he even blesses us

  850. richly. This is God's amazing grace.

  851. Let's just be quiet before the Lord for

  852. a few moments. [snorts]

  853. Father God, perhaps there are some of us

  854. here who have heard you calling to us,

  855. Lord. Perhaps we are in places we know

  856. are not good. Perhaps we have [sighs]

  857. walked away from you a little bit.

  858. Perhaps we're frustrated with you in

  859. some way. Father, I pray that you would

  860. bring us back to that close walk with

  861. you. I pray that you would show us grace

  862. even this morning. I pray, Lord, that we

  863. might be aware of you calling to us,

  864. Lord, with those open arms of a loving

  865. father beckoning us to come back. Lord,

  866. we pray that we would not stay away,

  867. that we would not drag our heels, that

  868. we would not love our sin more than we

  869. love you. Oh Lord, I pray that we would

  870. be a people who come joyfully, happily,

  871. humbly before you with gratitude and

  872. thanks in our hearts for you are God and

  873. in you there is life and peace and hope.

  874. So Lord, we come to you now Lord not

  875. claiming moral superiority but claiming

  876. your son. He is our only hope. We thank

  877. you in Jesus name. Amen.
