  1. launch right in today. So, heavenly

  2. father, thank you for this opportunity

  3. to look again at your word and your

  4. mission in particular. Last week, we

  5. spent time looking at having your word

  6. as our exclusive uh authority and not

  7. having any other authorities mixed in.

  8. And when that's uh the case, then we can

  9. have the right relationships uh with

  10. other authorities that you have

  11. established and that you teach about and

  12. how we should relate to. And today,

  13. Lord, we'll be talking about um how to

  14. actually personally obey. It doesn't

  15. really mean anything if we stand on your

  16. authority, but don't grow in personal

  17. obedience. And I pray that you would um

  18. use your word today to help people uh

  19. make progress in personal obedience. And

  20. I pray these things in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. For those of you that are super detail-

  23. oriented, and I'm not going to make it

  24. obvious, there's one thing different

  25. about me today visually.

  26. Can anyone guess what it is? It the

  27. watch. Yes, I found it. It doesn't work.

  28. And I walked.

  29. I'm not going to fix it either, but I I

  30. walked into the church like this and

  31. like yesterday there were football games

  32. and I forgot my sunglasses and it was so

  33. bright at Pioneer Stadium. And then

  34. Elijah goes, "Dad, it's not even bright

  35. outside." And I was like, "It's an

  36. accessory, Elijah." And he's our most

  37. accessorizing child, too. So, this is

  38. purely ornamental. I do like it, though.

  39. Anyway, that has nothing to do with

  40. anything. Um,

  41. truly, it's not like I'm not going to I

  42. couldn't find any way to mix it into the

  43. introduction. But, um, today is going to

  44. be different than just about any sermon

  45. uh that I usually do. What our u bread

  46. and butter is is we choose a book and we

  47. walk through that book piece by piece,

  48. verse by verse, chapter by chapter. Um

  49. it's uh based on conviction that we

  50. believe that's the way the Bible really

  51. is intended to go through that you're

  52. following the inspired teachings of

  53. these authors and it's inspired by God

  54. and not just teaching the truth therein

  55. but also teaching according to how they

  56. composed it. Uh but there's authority in

  57. both. It's written not just for the

  58. meaning of the verses but also the order

  59. of how it's written. And I think that's

  60. a really powerful thing. I know that

  61. you've come to love that. And that

  62. starts next week again in acts. Uh what

  63. we do like to do at Boon's Ferry um at

  64. the beginning of September is do some uh

  65. missional updates or missional

  66. reorientation

  67. or missional explanation like what is

  68. our mission? How are we doing at it? Uh

  69. and how are we accomplishing it

  70. organizationally? And so that's the

  71. first part of what we're going to be

  72. talking about today is how is Boon Ferry

  73. organized to carry out this mission. We

  74. talked about the mission last week from

  75. authority standpoint. God Jesus has been

  76. given all authority and that authority

  77. is in his word and we're uh to as to be

  78. and make disciples uh both baptizing

  79. them in the father and the son and the

  80. holy spirit which would be like the

  81. evangelistic portion of it but that

  82. disciplehip should continue in teaching

  83. everyone to observe everything Jesus has

  84. commanded and he promises that he'll be

  85. with us and with us in his authority to

  86. accomplish that mission and that is the

  87. mission of the church that's what Jesus

  88. said the church to be about um but how

  89. are we organized to carry out that

  90. mission which starts with evangelism.

  91. It's not just mentorship and it's not

  92. just evangelism but starts with

  93. evangelism then continues in teaching

  94. people to observe everything uh that he

  95. commanded. And we laid the foundation

  96. last week which God already laid uh

  97. through his apostles that God's word is

  98. the authority that we are submitted to

  99. and to the exclusion of all others in

  100. the sense as the foundation. Um, and I

  101. talked about how when you pour Coca-Cola

  102. in or any sugar into concrete, it

  103. doesn't let the concrete set. And when

  104. you're wanting the concrete to set and

  105. it doesn't, it turns into some kind of

  106. quicksand slush and you can't stand on

  107. that. And you might felt like, well,

  108. absolutely, I agree. And it's it's total

  109. review for me, the idea that we're

  110. standing on the authority of God's word

  111. alone. And that is Christian 101's. But

  112. the thought that maybe other authorities

  113. have begun to influence the way that you

  114. look at the word. Maybe uh other

  115. authorities are mixed in where they're

  116. competing with well you know this

  117. authority says this uh social authority,

  118. scientific authority, governmental

  119. authority, psychological authority,

  120. whatever their these authorities are and

  121. then it starts affecting the way you

  122. look at scripture rather than just

  123. looking at what God says and trusting it

  124. um and and letting that stand. It's

  125. eternal. Everything else passes away,

  126. but his word does not. Um, so, uh,

  127. everything on earth passes away. But

  128. now that, and I know you agree with

  129. this. So, now that we're standing on the

  130. authority of his word and and have that

  131. piece completed, what does it actually

  132. look out look like to personally obey in

  133. carrying out that mission? And how could

  134. you be involved in at Boon's Ferry? you

  135. know, churches will organize differently

  136. around this mission and um but as as

  137. long as they recognize that this is the

  138. mission, uh there's some freedom in

  139. exactly how you organize around that.

  140. And I want to show you why we're

  141. organized the way we are. And it comes

  142. directly from Acts chapter 2. Uh it's

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  143. one of my favorite teachings about the

  144. church. It's about the early church. And

  145. I think it is for you as well. Whenever

  146. Christians read what was going on in the

  147. early church and what they devoted

  148. themselves and how they were organized,

  149. everyone that I've talked to is just

  150. like, I want to be a part of a church

  151. that's like that and experiencing that.

  152. I will say as a disclaimer, I do not

  153. believe that these words are um

  154. prescriptive as in you have to do all of

  155. these things. I think each one of them

  156. them is commanded in other places but

  157. it's not as though it's like okay well

  158. this is a command for exactly how the

  159. church has to organize. It's

  160. descriptive. This is how the early

  161. church organized and and I recognize

  162. that. But I still think well why not

  163. just copy what they did? Why not just

  164. copy exactly what they did? And if we

  165. copy what they did in the power of the

  166. spirit, not by human means, then it

  167. stands to reason that we would

  168. experience similar power and enthusiasm,

  169. excitement around the mission. So here

  170. is Acts 2 verse 42-47.

    Acts 2:42–47

  171. And this will be the scripture for the

  172. first part of the uh sermon today, which

  173. is uh basically an explanation of how

  174. we're organized around our mission. The

  175. second part of the sermon would be how

  176. do you personally obey um along the

  177. lines of that emission of that mission.

  178. Okay? So they're connected, but they

  179. aren't they're really two relatively

  180. separate ideas. Um normally I just

  181. preach on one idea and try to drive that

  182. home. But if you're wondering what's

  183. going on here, how is this all

  184. connected? I'm not even necessarily

  185. saying the two halves are connected, but

  186. let's let's read 42 in chapter 2 of

  187. Acts. And they devoted themselves to the

  188. apostles teaching and the fellowship to

  189. the breaking of bread and prayers. And

  190. awe came upon every soul. And many

  191. wonders and signs were being done

  192. through the apostles. And all who

  193. believed were together and had all

  194. things in common. And they were selling

  195. their possessions and belonging

  196. belongings and distributing the proceeds

  197. to all as any had need. And day by day,

  198. attending the temple together, and

  199. breaking bread in their homes, they

  200. received their food with glad and

  201. generous hearts, praising God, and

  202. having favor with all the people. And

  203. the Lord added to their number day by

  204. day those who are being saved.

  205. And so I actually want to show you if

  206. you've, you know, if you're new to the

  207. church and you're like, "What's this

  208. church about? What's their mission?

  209. What's their faith statement?" Our

  210. mission is right online. and actually

  211. had um our our team take a screen

  212. capture. You may not be able to see

  213. that. I can't actually even see it on

  214. the screen on the confidence monitor,

  215. but I'll just read it from right here.

  216. And this comes directly from Acts uh 42

  217. uh through Acts 2:42-47

    Acts 2:42–47

  218. as well as um um uh Matthew 28 and uh

  219. you could also mix Luke 10 in there

  220. about um what are the two greatest

  221. commands? And so Boon's mission is to be

  222. and make disciples of Jesus who love God

  223. and others for his glory. I want to

  224. explain that mission for a second.

  225. Clearly our mission is to be and make

  226. disciples. But if we're teaching them to

  227. observe everything Jesus commanded, his

  228. commands and all of in all of scripture

  229. can be um summarized in in the two great

  230. commands. And that summarizes all of

  231. scripture perfectly. Um and it's about

  232. learning and growing in loving God and

  233. loving others. And those are necessarily

  234. linked and there's really nothing more

  235. to it. Uh in all of the Bible that that

  236. is the ultimate end goal of our growth

  237. leading to God's glory. What glorifies

  238. God is when we are growing in learning

  239. to love him and others the way he

  240. teaches us to in his word and the way he

  241. empowers us to by his holy spirit. Okay?

  242. If if the Holy Spirit was not indwelling

  243. us, the word would not actually empower

  244. us to carry out this mission. But

  245. because of the operation of the Holy

  246. Spirit and the power of God's word in

  247. our hearts, we can carry out this

  248. mission. Okay? And we're organized

  249. around four summary areas. Uh our

  250. missional efforts focus on four main

  251. areas. Wor and they're not necessarily

  252. uh in order of importance. Although if I

  253. were to put one as most important, I

  254. would put worship, which is why we did

  255. put that at the top. Um but these are

  256. all connected to those first and second

  257. greatest commands. And if you take one

  258. out, something's incomplete. worship,

  259. loving God, being and making disciples

  260. of Jesus who worship God in every area

  261. of their lives. So in this case, we're

  262. not just talking about our song and

  263. praise worship. We're talking about

  264. continued growth in loving God. That's a

  265. good definition of worship. If you are

  266. uh growing in doing that, and you can

  267. see verse 47 that they were doing that,

  268. praising God and having favor with all

  269. people. So worship was a critically

  270. important part of uh what the early

  271. church devoted it itself to uh

  272. evangelism, loving the lost, being and

  273. making disciples who witness to others

  274. who Jesus is and what he has done. It

  275. does say go and make disciples. Uh and

  276. that is evangelism. And then they're to

  277. be baptized in the name of the father,

  278. son, and holy spirit. And they they were

  279. doing that. there were daily people

  280. added to their number. And we know from

  281. just earlier in this very same passage

  282. that when people were cut to the heart

  283. and said something like, "What should we

  284. do?" Uh Peter would say, "Repent and be

  285. baptized in the name of the Lord." And

  286. so they were carrying out that aspect.

  287. Um and I'm not going I've I've done this

  288. in past sermons. I think it's under a

  289. playlist on um on YouTube called our

  290. mission. And so you can look uh at at

  291. past sermons about the mission if you

  292. wanted to get to know more. This is just

  293. a summary of how we're organized.

  294. Fellowship, loving each other, being

  295. making disciples of Jesus whose

  296. relationships are marked by love uh of

  297. each other. Okay? Uh that one might be

  298. one of the most self-explanatory ones.

  299. Uh but I'm going to go into it more

  300. deeply when I talk about more

  301. specifically how we're organized. This

  302. is just the summary of what we're

  303. intending to organize around. And then

  304. service. And we do not mean service just

  305. to the least of these. Um but service to

  306. one another uh could also be considered

  307. um fellowship where it's just like

  308. you're serving someone that isn't

  309. necessarily in great need. There's a

  310. category of people that over and over

  311. and over again all throughout scripture

  312. God shows his heart for. And uh the

  313. least of these is a is a summary term of

  314. those kinds of people. people that are

  315. uh

  316. that are in a low place in their life,

  317. people that do not have enough money to

  318. uh take care of themselves, people that

  319. lack the power to defend themselves. Um,

  320. and there are other ways to define that

  321. as well, but I think you know who the

  322. least of these are. And there are many

  323. different demographic and kinds of

  324. people. Maybe another one would be

  325. people who are um deeply wounded or even

  326. uh mentally damaged in some way or uh

  327. whether whether physically or

  328. emotionally all fit into this category.

  329. And Jesus showed his great love for that

  330. kind of demographic of people over and

  331. over and over again being and making

  332. disciples of Jesus who serve the poor by

  333. caring for their material and spiritual

  334. needs. And that last part's really

  335. important. were not looking to just hand

  336. out bread alone. Jesus rejected people

  337. following him just for them to to have

  338. their physical needs met. There is

  339. actually a need that is more important

  340. than their physical needs and is their

  341. spiritual needs. Needs for forgiveness,

  342. for repentance, for forgiveness, for

  343. healing, for being saved, for their

  344. souls to be saved. And it's not a false

  345. dichotomy to say souls are more

  346. important than your body. Uh that is

  347. something that is actually taught in

  348. scripture. It's not worth gaining the

  349. whole world. If you gained the whole

  350. world, you would also gain the all the

  351. bread in the world, you know, and all

  352. the gluten-free bread in the world if

  353. you're gluten-free. So, you would gain

  354. all the means by which to always take

  355. care of yourself, but you could still

  356. lose your soul, right? So, you have to

  357. consider that we we do believe that

  358. scripture teaches that our souls are

  359. ultimately eternally important. Now,

  360. James also says that if you say uh that

  361. you love somebody and you see that

  362. they're cold and you say, "Be warm, but

  363. don't give them a blanket." That's

  364. really not love at all. And so, you

  365. cannot simply say, "Well, we're only

  366. going to care for people's spiritual

  367. needs." Loving them care means caring

  368. for their needs. Um, but we're going to

  369. do both. Caring for their material and

  370. spiritual needs. And I am completely

  371. convinced and I think that you should be

  372. too that there are no other categories

  373. of areas that we need to focus on other

  374. than these according to New Testament

  375. scripture of of what the uh church

  376. should uh be doing missionally that this

  377. summarizes it. Um that this is a is a

  378. good definition of all that disciplehip

  379. should entail. People should be

  380. discipled along the lines of worship and

  381. loving God. discipled along the lines of

  382. evangelism, loving the lost, discipled

  383. along the lines of how growing to love

  384. one another, fellowship, and discipled

  385. in serving uh the poor. Um so in serving

  386. the least of these, both in their

  387. material and spiritual needs. Now

  388. another way that we are copying

  389. organizationally to actually carry out

  390. these missional areas is by meeting in

  391. small groups. This is a pattern that

  392. Jesus discip uh that Jesus uh carried

  393. out in his mission and he had 12

  394. disciples and he spent so much time with

  395. them and they were not the only people

  396. he discipled. They were not the only

  397. people he taught. He would t teach large

  398. groups as well. Uh I think it's good and

  399. right and biblically commanded that

  400. there would be preaching to large

  401. groups. I also believe that it's good

  402. and right to follow Jesus example to

  403. organize around small groups in this

  404. way. And we call those our disciplehip

  405. communities. Um sometimes they're

  406. they're you could think of them as Bible

  407. studies, but they're more than Bible

  408. studies. They're just another meeting

  409. that is basically copying and following

  410. what the early church devoted itself to.

  411. And so we come together and we eat

  412. together. And we call that table

  413. fellowship as just a summary. But we're

  414. intending to meet with one another in

  415. each other's homes, which is exactly

  416. what they were doing. And there is

  417. warmth and encouragement. And it's a

  418. great context to develop relationships.

  419. And Jesus did that a lot with his

  420. disciples. You notice that both before

  421. his resurrection and after his

  422. resurrection, he ate with his disciples.

  423. He spent real time in relationship to

  424. them because fellowship is is so

  425. important. Our relationships are part of

  426. the second greatest command to learn to

  427. love one another. And then we study

  428. God's word together. Um, and then we

  429. pray together, which is all things you

  430. just heard about them devoting

  431. themselves to. Uh, I've got an example

  432. you just see from a distance. Although

  433. there are copies of this on the

  434. connection table. Here is an example.

  435. I don't actually know if you can zoom on

  436. this in on this for people online, but

  437. it's not necessary. But an example of

  438. five questions that are written in

  439. advance and then these are already

  440. posted online uh for our discussion. And

  441. these are guiding questions. Uh I'd say

  442. that if you can devote even just half an

  443. hour, you should be able to get through

  444. most of these questions. Sometimes the

  445. the biblical verses are complicated and

  446. it might take more like 45 minutes to an

  447. hour to get through them. Um and then

  448. you bring your answers, your homework to

  449. the discussion group to the disciplehip

  450. communities. And after eating together

  451. the um discip we call them DCs for short

  452. for short because disciplehip

  453. communities is a mouthful. We understand

  454. that. Um but so when you hear like, "Oh,

  455. you're going to DC tonight." That's what

  456. they're talking about, our Bible

  457. studies. And um the the DC leaders will

  458. just be facilitating. They're not

  459. teaching directly like I teach up front

  460. because the group is meant for your

  461. discussion and verbally processing and

  462. what you have learned. Um and we go

  463. through these these five or six

  464. questions. Um sometimes questions are

  465. double and you might think, "Oh, they're

  466. trying to practice as many questions in

  467. there as we can." We have now found a

  468. better way to ask both content and

  469. applicational questions than like, hey,

  470. what's this passage saying? Basically,

  471. how does it apply to your life? So,

  472. you'll see these onetwo punch questions

  473. as well. But I do not think this takes

  474. an excessively long time. Like, we're

  475. not expecting that you spend 4 hours on

  476. this homework every single week. I spend

  477. about an hour answering these questions

  478. myself and uh so do my kids that are

  479. coming and uh and my wife as well. Um,

  480. and sometimes I spend less less.

  481. Sometimes it's more like, well, I've got

  482. half an hour now. I didn't plan well

  483. this week. I'm going to uh I'm going to

  484. spend time right now on it. And what

  485. that does is it creates an opportunity

  486. for us focusing on the very same

  487. scripture and then actually teaching one

  488. another in our discussions, which by the

  489. way is also biblically commanded. I'll

  490. be showing you a verse about that uh in

  491. a while. And then this this is Acts 1

  492. 1-5 that will be studied in our

  493. disciplehip community on Wednesday

  494. night. They start at 6:00 p.m. Uh right.

  495. If you're brand new and you're wanting

  496. to come, don't worry about bringing

  497. food. Um let the leader know that you're

  498. coming. Uh information about our current

  499. three disciplehip communities is online

  500. um under the disciplehip tab up there.

  501. And uh I think this is just a screenshot

  502. so it's not like we're live on our on

  503. our website but go there and you can see

  504. where they are and you could maybe

  505. choose partly related to which one is

  506. geographically close to you. You could

  507. choose because you were hey I got

  508. invited by this person. I already have a

  509. relational connection. I could come to

  510. that one. Um you just let God lead you

  511. where you want to come. And it is

  512. perfectly fine to check out more than

  513. one disciplehip community. We do ask

  514. that at some point you make a commitment

  515. to that group. Um, it's not like we're

  516. even going to ask you, hey, have you

  517. made a commitment to this group and for

  518. how long? That it's more organic than

  519. that, but we're asking that you would

  520. commit to being part of that group. Um,

  521. and and decide to work through conflict

  522. in that group with one another. That's

  523. all part of the plan. Remember how the

  524. disciples would you compete with one

  525. another and get frustrated with one

  526. another? Um, God intends for us to so to

  527. speak, uh, chip each other's edges off

  528. and sometimes be a little bit of

  529. sandpaper. And it's always an amazing

  530. opportunity. If you're never in

  531. relationship to other Christians, you're

  532. never going to have to forgive them

  533. because they never sin against you since

  534. you're not really in relationship to

  535. them. And so, you don't really have to

  536. practice uh, the version of fellowship

  537. that requires the Holy Spirit. Uh, one

  538. thing I can guarantee you at Boon's

  539. Ferryy is that people at Boon Ferry will

  540. sin against you if you get into close

  541. relationship to them. We're all sinners

  542. here and that will happen. But then you

  543. have this amazing opportunity to

  544. actually surrender to the power of the

  545. Holy Spirit. And something happens that

  546. you cannot gain in relationship to other

  547. people any other way. You know, people

  548. unfriend each other so quickly these

  549. days. They just hit the the unfriend

  550. button and it's done. and and all of a

  551. sudden you're estranged for them for

  552. years and it's so unfortunate and

  553. painful but it's also very much

  554. unnecessary and not not to happen among

  555. Christians. Uh what happens though when

  556. you actually forgive someone when you

  557. actually go and talk to them about how

  558. they hurt you or they come and talk to

  559. you about how they uh were hurt by you

  560. and you say I'm so sorry will you please

  561. forgive me and which is not always the

  562. usual experience and then you do you've

  563. established a precedent in your

  564. relationship that you can actually wrong

  565. each other and the relationship will

  566. survive and then it goes even deeper

  567. because I know from talking to you guys

  568. that sometimes when there's never had

  569. anything happen wrong and you wonder,

  570. uhoh, I did something wrong. Is this the

  571. end of the relationship? With

  572. Christians, it ought never to be even

  573. close. And so, I believe one of the

  574. reasons why God uh why Jesus brought the

  575. disciples together in that way is that

  576. he was actually teaching them to love

  577. one another. You know, Simon the zealot

  578. with Levi or Matthew the tax collector.

  579. You know who zealots hate the most? Tax

  580. collectors, right? So, they had to learn

  581. to love one another. Uh, and uh, that's

  582. um, that's a powerful way to do it. Uh,

  583. just one more little plug for the

  584. disciplehip communities. If you're

  585. thinking about, you know what, I really

  586. have not made God's word primary in my

  587. life. I know it should be the foundation

  588. of my life, but I rarely read it. You

  589. know, I'm not spending that much time in

  590. it. It's not a pattern of uh, regular

  591. engagement with God's word, and I really

  592. ought to get in into it. Uh, I don't

  593. think you're alone uh in that. I I don't

  594. even think that's all that common for

  595. Christians to experience that. Knowing

  596. the right thing to do and how to relate

  597. to scripture, but not having

  598. accomplished it yet. If you just decide

  599. to commit to one of these disciplehip

  600. committees and do the homework, you're

  601. going to be spending half an hour to 45

  602. minutes going through Acts 1 1-5. Then

  603. you're going to come and spend about 45

  604. minutes to an hour discussing Acts 1

  605. 1-5. And then you're going to hear a

  606. sermon on Acts 1 1-5. That's three times

  607. that you're studying God's word,

  608. potentially more than you already are,

  609. in a organized and systematic way. And

  610. the people that have been doing it have

  611. experienced growth in understanding,

  612. growth in personal obedience, just

  613. growth in all kinds of spiritual ways,

  614. and I think really have just fallen in

  615. love. And one thing that's really fun

  616. for me is that as you guys are studying

  617. this, you start looking forward to the

  618. sermon because you're wanting even more

  619. growth. So I think it's a great way to

  620. be organized and I think it's a biblical

  621. way to be organized and that's that. You

  622. might think, well, how much time should

  623. we spend in God's word? Do we just need

  624. to spend all day every day uh reading

  625. God's word? Actually, no. Because there

  626. are other commands such as work hardily

  627. as unto the Lord and not to men. So,

  628. he's given you vocations and

  629. assignments, and some of those

  630. assignments do not allow you to

  631. simultaneously be reading God's word um

  632. and doing your assignments. Think of an

  633. air traffic controller when he's

  634. directing several different planes

  635. coming in potentially at different

  636. angles on different uh runways. Can he

  637. be simultaneously memorizing a psalm

  638. while doing that? No. It would be

  639. nonsense to do that. Um, so letting

  640. Christ's word dwell in you richly does

  641. not require that you would just read

  642. scripture all day or for hours and hours

  643. every day. Uh, I do believe that it

  644. requires you to be in his word at least

  645. in some way every day. Um, that's the

  646. deposit. That time spent in the word

  647. deposits his word in your heart and then

  648. it it goes to work. So, you go to work

  649. as an air traffic controller and and you

  650. just read Psalms, you know, about how

  651. you need to uh be willing to cast your

  652. anxiety on him. Well, these days, if

  653. you're an air traffic controller with

  654. the seemingly, I don't know if

  655. statistically, but seemingly increased

  656. accidents are being happened, would that

  657. be a temptation to anxiety and trying to

  658. do it in your own control? Yeah. And it

  659. would be a huge blessing to just ask God

  660. to help you to be confident and focused,

  661. competent, and focused and not make any

  662. mistakes and just cast your anxiety on

  663. him. The reality is that anxiety might

  664. be the thing that causes you to make a

  665. mistake. So if you're a Christian air

  666. traffic controller, God's word deposited

  667. in your heart may be the very thing that

  668. helps you experience peace even while

  669. doing that work. And that's just one

  670. job. You there's so many jobs. Stay at

  671. home mothers is the very same thing. you

  672. need strength from his word. And because

  673. of that, not just the idea that

  674. organizing around the way the Acts uh

  675. the early church in um Acts did,

  676. we have a Bible reading program for that

  677. kind of daily reading. It's called Word

  678. Like Fire. And this actually is the um I

  679. would say last year's, but it's about a

  680. year and a half or so that we spend.

  681. It's a nice slow Bible reading plan, not

  682. one where it's like, you know, 15

  683. chapters a day or something like this.

  684. And it's called Word Like Fire. We're

  685. going to have all of these printed out

  686. for uh probably like 100 to 150 copies

  687. so that anyone in the church that wants

  688. to join us in this Bible uh reading uh

  689. plan can do that. And actually, there

  690. are two days to do each scripture

  691. reading. So the very first reading on

  692. last year's plan and I believe this

  693. year's plan will be identical is Psalm

  694. 119 and that's one of the longest

  695. chapters but you have two full days to

  696. read it. So it's not more faster. It's

  697. well done in God's timing. And then we

  698. move on to Genesis 1-3 and John 1-3. It

  699. is not just a linear straight read

  700. through. It is a designed plan. We

  701. didn't design it ourselves. Um it's

  702. based on two uh the 2020 to the word

  703. which is someone else's Bible reading

  704. plan that they developed and it um it

  705. intends to match Old Testament books

  706. with ones that are new that that uh uh

  707. the New Testament uh writings are

  708. relevant to and so they talk about

  709. things. I mean, if you think about John

  710. and uh uh Genesis, they both begin in

  711. the same way, in the beginning, you

  712. know. So, it's really cool to be making

  713. those connections and you're not

  714. spending all this time reading the Old

  715. Testament with not being in the New

  716. Testament. Uh I've heard it said that

  717. the Old Testament is Christ concealed

  718. and the New Testament is Christ

  719. revealed. And I kind of like that little

  720. moniker. And so really all the New

  721. Testament is other than brand new

  722. prophecy at times. Even that is linked

  723. to the Old Testament um is a revelation

  724. of Christ in greater high definition of

  725. what the Old Testament was actually

  726. talking about. So they're necessarily

  727. linked. I think it's a great Bible

  728. reading program. And here's just one

  729. more plug for it. My vision and the

  730. elders's vision for this is uh simply

  731. defined as all being on the same page

  732. quite literally. So, here's this may

  733. excite you. It really excites me. Um, I

  734. want to challenge this year and a half

  735. for everyone in the congregation to do

  736. it. It's not a legalistic challenge. If

  737. you are already succeeding in a Bible

  738. reading program and you're wondering, do

  739. they want me to quit that and do this

  740. one anyway? If God leads you to for the

  741. arguments that I'm about to make, uh,

  742. and that gets exciting to you, yes. But

  743. I would be concerned if you got a thing

  744. going, don't necessarily interrupt it.

  745. Right? The goal ultimately is to be in

  746. the word every day and to let Christ

  747. dwell in us richly. But there's another

  748. goal of being on the same page. I want

  749. you to imagine a scenario. Our church is

  750. very relational. People start asking

  751. you, "Hey, you want to go get coffee

  752. together? Want to hang out? Uh, want to

  753. go to the park?" As the weather turns,

  754. it'll probably more be more indoor. And

  755. let's just say you join this um which by

  756. the way, before I forget, it will start

  757. on the 21st. So, I'm I I wanted to have

  758. you guys have some time to consider if I

  759. was going to join and do this to have

  760. some strategic planning. Uh what are the

  761. when what time would I start reading it?

  762. If your children, you know, have school

  763. really early, am I going to do it as a

  764. bedtime routine? Um if I'm really making

  765. this commitment, I want to keep it. So,

  766. I want to make sure to reorient my life

  767. to make space for the reading of God's

  768. word. So, again, that will be on the

  769. 21st. And these will be handed out in

  770. person on the 20th, but it will also be

  771. online. So, you don't just need a hard

  772. copy. But back to the point that I was

  773. making. Let's say you get invited to go

  774. to coffee. You come to coffee and both

  775. of you have done your reading for the

  776. week in Genesis 1 through3 and John 1-3.

  777. It creates a rapport of something to

  778. talk about other than Monday Night

  779. Football, other than things that are fun

  780. to talk about but are not necessarily

  781. eternally valuable. And all of a sudden,

  782. I was like, "Oh, yeah. I was reading

  783. that in Genesis 1. And I saw the

  784. connection with with John as well. You

  785. have this rapport together as a church.

  786. I like to think of it as like a tuning

  787. fork for for unity in our church. We're

  788. all being tuned to the very same

  789. frequency. And and uh it allows us to

  790. let the word dwell in us richly, not

  791. just as individuals, but

  792. congregationally. So that's my plug. If

  793. you're considering doing it, it's not

  794. like you have to let us know. I'm going

  795. to be doing it. you're going to be

  796. hearing a lot more uh times where I'm

  797. bringing the reading from word like fire

  798. into the sermons and it's just another

  799. way for us to be focused on the

  800. authority of God's word and personal

  801. obedience. Uh last thing about a

  802. missional explanation is the very next

  803. thing that we are working on is uh what

  804. I call mentor style disciplehip. So this

  805. is disciplehip. you listening to

  806. teaching from God's word, just reading

  807. God's word by yourself, that is a part

  808. of disciplehip. But there's another way

  809. Jesus modeled disciplehip, which is I

  810. would call like one- on-one or one-on-

  811. two. And you can get into real the real

  812. deep areas in that way. And I think you

  813. know what like apprenticing or mentoring

  814. is. It's when a um not necessarily older

  815. but usually older and uh more mature

  816. Christian in takes a spiritual intention

  817. to help develop another disciple for

  818. some period of time. Uh that's actually

  819. a very careful uh definition on my part

  820. because it's not a lifelong commitment

  821. necessarily. Uh it's uh only some

  822. responsibility of the disciplehip.

  823. you're not taking all the responsibility

  824. of disciplehip and um but it is

  825. intentional. So you're having some

  826. intent in helping somebody grow as a

  827. mentor and we have been for a while

  828. while um developing mentors and uh we'll

  829. be installing those. I'm hoping uh

  830. before the end of the fall asking

  831. people, hey uh we feel like you are

  832. someone that got us highlighted as

  833. mature and someone that we would like to

  834. be an official Boon Fairy mentor and

  835. then we're going to announce those

  836. mentors and uh find a way to make sure

  837. people know uh that they're available.

  838. They might not be available more than

  839. maybe two mentees uh but it's another

  840. way to copy what Jesus did. He discipled

  841. them in in large groups. He discipled

  842. them in small groups. And he also uh

  843. talked to them about really deep things

  844. one-on-one. Remember Peter having to be

  845. restored. Maybe some of you need to be

  846. restored in some way and encouraged and

  847. maybe it's in such a deep and private

  848. area that really doing it with someone

  849. trustworthy that you can trust doctrally

  850. that you can trust in terms of keeping

  851. confidentiality and who you have a trust

  852. in guiding you towards God's word and

  853. not towards some other authority. Uh

  854. that can be a really powerful thing. I

  855. know some of you have longed for a very

  856. long time to have mentors and that's the

  857. very next thing we're um intending to

  858. install to keep accomplishing our

  859. mission. So um that's the progress that

  860. we've made so far. You can look forward

  861. into the future, although I can't

  862. predict when us putting in um more

  863. organizational effort for evangelism. In

  864. the meantime, I'm already

  865. I don't want to be patronizing, but I

  866. feel proud uh to be part of this

  867. congregation. I constantly hear about

  868. people talking about, you know, I shared

  869. my faith today um with my grandson. I

  870. shared my faith today with a young lady.

  871. I shared my faith like witnessing to

  872. people in that way. So, evangelism is

  873. already happening. We also intend to

  874. have a more structured and organized

  875. approach towards caring for the poor at

  876. our church. And those are not yet built

  877. out. if you're wondering why don't we do

  878. that yet. We're taking a very systematic

  879. uh approach of building these things to

  880. last long term. Um so that's what we're

  881. about and that's what we're intending to

  882. uh organize our lives around as a

  883. church. I think it's exciting. I I I

  884. organize my family around it. I organize

  885. uh around this so deeply that even

  886. things that I absolutely love like

  887. sports for my kids that um we're having

  888. to make some tough decisions about

  889. whether certain sports leagues are

  890. really going to work cuz they're in

  891. competition with our Sunday service. And

  892. currently we only have one and I don't

  893. know how you personally feel in terms of

  894. conviction about Sunday but again not in

  895. a legalistic way. Um, for example, if we

  896. had multiple services and your son was

  897. playing on a Sunday, but you were able

  898. to come to the Saturday service, I

  899. wouldn't have any uh explicit biblical

  900. reason to find a problem with that. I

  901. personally just like to, it's actually

  902. called the Lord's Day uh in scripture.

  903. And so, I like to hold that open. And

  904. so, um, it's been difficult being part

  905. of a sports league that has them on both

  906. days. And I've been talking to my boys

  907. about like at maximum if it's a

  908. championship, that's my rule. if it's a

  909. championship and you're missing one

  910. Sunday, that would be that would be one

  911. thing because we miss Sundays for for

  912. like vacation and things like that. Um,

  913. but I'll tell you this is, you might

  914. laugh at this because you might not care

  915. about hunting, but I have fallen in love

  916. with hunting. I have a friend who I

  917. played, I was a dtack, as a defensive

  918. end, and he got an elk and now he said,

  919. "Well, I guess I'll just be guiding

  920. you." So, I all of a sudden have a

  921. guide, which was probably something

  922. like5 to $10,000. I told him I told him,

  923. "I can't tell you how thankful I am that

  924. you're just going to guide me." And

  925. ideally, we'd be going for from Monday

  926. to Friday, 7 days. That would increase

  927. the chances. It's archery, right? I'm

  928. brand new to it and I am so nervous that

  929. I'm going to miss. I've been practicing

  930. every day. Um, and so, man, when you see

  931. an animal like that and you're trying to

  932. take the shot, adrenaline, hands are

  933. shaking, you're breathing hard. It's

  934. intense. And so, I thought about it. you

  935. know, it wouldn't be the end of the

  936. world to miss one disciplehip community.

  937. Um, and uh, we miss all the time and

  938. this is really a special thing. But I

  939. thought, you know what? I'm asking God

  940. to help me get a bull elk. I'm asking

  941. him to to help us do that. It's it's

  942. total bucket list for me. And you know

  943. what? I'm going to put him first even

  944. though it wouldn't be absolutely

  945. necessary. I am not going to go hunting

  946. on Wednesday. And it was a sacrifice for

  947. me. Maybe not that big of a one, but it

  948. was a sacrifice. So, um, one thing I

  949. want to ask you before we even get into

  950. the meat of the word and get away from

  951. this explanation, which I think is good,

  952. but I think we need to focus on the word

  953. now. Um, is are you living your life

  954. according to God's agenda? Is this the

  955. mission of your life? If you're a

  956. Christian and indwwellled by the spirit,

  957. did you know that you've been given at

  958. least one gift or more that is meant to

  959. help accomplish this mission on earth?

  960. Do you know that you're a spiritual

  961. building block that is part of God's

  962. blueprint for the church to be built

  963. alongside others?

  964. Did you know that even the idea of

  965. gathering together, we're going to go

  966. over Hebrews uh 10, that we're not to

  967. forsake the gathering and make that a

  968. habit, uh but rather we're to encourage

  969. one another. So when you're missing from

  970. church, when you're missing from these

  971. groups, when you're just missing in

  972. fellowship opportunities like that, the

  973. encouragement that God intends to bring

  974. other people through you is as well. And

  975. so that's a place where the mission is

  976. not being accomplished. And so it's not

  977. just because I get paid to do this that

  978. I've devoted my life to this. Um I

  979. watched my dad and my mom devote their

  980. lives to this. I devoted my life to

  981. everything but this mission for the

  982. early part of my life living like a

  983. prodigal and then God brought me to

  984. repentance, captured my heart, forgave

  985. me of all of my sin. I knew that he

  986. loved me for sure. And this is what I

  987. want my family to about. And this is

  988. what I want our church to be about. by

  989. conviction and to the exclusion of other

  990. good things when necessary. So I believe

  991. that's what you're called to. And so you

  992. might consider in terms of personal

  993. obedience, have you made that the agenda

  994. of your life? Because that's the Lord's

  995. agenda for us. And I'm not saying that

  996. doesn't mean you continue to work

  997. hardily as unto the Lord in your

  998. vocation. It's just would you consider

  999. your vocation as built around that

1000. mission or the other way around. I do

1001. not believe we should make I found a way

  1002. the church an accessory.

1003. It just came to me. All right. So, let's

1004. get into the idea of actually being

1005. personally obedient. It does flow. How

1006. can we be personally obedient in this

1007. mission? Let's go back to Matthew 12

1008. or excuse me, Matthew 28

1009. and let's read what Jesus said. This is

  1010. Matthew 28:16.

    Matthew 28:16

1011. Now the 11 disciples went to Galilee to

1012. the mountain to which Jesus had directed

1013. them and they saw him and worshiped him.

  1014. But some doubted

1015. who are who are the some we don't know

  1016. who's the group that's being talked

  1017. about. The 11 disciples.

1018. We're going to watch them become the

1019. apostles here in Acts. And we're going

1020. to see them overcome that doubt and obey

1021. God and make his agenda the agenda of

1022. their life even on pain of death for

  1023. some of them.

1024. But they did doubt and this is

1025. postresurrection. Have you ever seen

1026. that? Now the 11 disciples went to

1027. Galilee and then just skip down. Some

1028. doubted. Okay, even among the disciples

  1029. who were eyewitnesses

1030. of the resurrection and eyewitnesses of

1031. the ascension. Okay, those things just

1032. didn't happen back then either. When

1033. people died, they stayed dead and no one

  1034. knew how to fly,

1035. right? So, these are shockingly,

  1036. unexplainably supernatural things. And

1037. some of them still doubted. I mentioned

1038. that because when we look to personally

1039. over obey, doubt is one of the biggest

1040. battlefields for growth in obedience.

1041. I'll say that again. Doubt is one of the

1042. biggest battlefields for growth in

1043. personal obedience. Verse 18. And Jesus

1044. came and said to them, "All authority in

1045. heaven and on earth has been given to

1046. me. Go therefore and make disciples of

1047. all nations, baptizing them in the name

1048. of the Father and in the Son and of the

1049. Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe

1050. all that I have commanded you. And

1051. behold, I will be with you always to the

1052. end of the age. You've heard how we're

1053. organized around this mission. And

1054. ultimately, the teaching them to observe

1055. all that I've commanded you is summed up

1056. in loving God more passionately and

  1057. loving others more compassionately.

1058. That's the summary of all that would uh

1059. be commanded in all of scripture. That's

1060. the end goal and that's what glorifies

1061. God. That's what makes him look as good

1062. as he actually is in our personal lives.

1063. So, I hope you're convinced that the way

1064. that we have committed to the mission,

1065. the way that we're defining it really is

1066. biblical. But what about personal

  1067. obedience? Let's say you u I'm going to

1068. stand up for a second here. I do this so

1069. rarely, but you're standing on the

1070. foundation, right? And your feet are

1071. solid and you haven't allowed coke to

1072. pour into there. So that one place is

1073. kind of soft and it's like that's a part

1074. that you're not even obeying

1075. hypothetically. What does that mean?

  1076. You're you're saying, "Well, I don't I

1077. disagree with that part of the word and

1078. I'm not even agree with it." That's

1079. being pretty far off, right? Because

1080. where can conviction even come in if you

1081. just say, "I don't even agree with that

1082. word." You have to first agree with the

1083. word to experience any kind of

1084. conviction that there's an area that you

1085. haven't obeyed yet. And so let's just

1086. say that you even just as a result of

1087. hearing the sermon and what the Holy

1088. Spirit's been doing in your life, you

1089. don't have that quicksand. If you do,

1090. you got to go back and get rid of it in

1091. the first place because then otherwise,

1092. you never know if you can trust your

1093. your foundation. Um, so if you're

1094. thinking about that and if you haven't

  1095. heard that sermon, I think I don't point

1096. back to sermons that much, but that

  1097. one's I think a pretty important one.

1098. foundationally for a church and for you.

1099. But let's say all of your foundation is

1100. is solid and you can stand on it, right?

1101. Does that mean that you're just always

  1102. obeying the go God's word? I don't

1103. always do a show of hands, but if uh you

1104. would do a show of hands, and this is

1105. not a trick question. The right answer

1106. is not to raise your hands, and you all

1107. know it. Okay. How many of you would

1108. claim right now that you already observe

1109. all of Jesus commands perfectly?

1110. I want you to look around for a second

1111. because that means that everybody here

1112. thinks they need to grow.

1113. Unless you were afraid to say it because

1114. of social pressure, which I hope wasn't

1115. the real thing. Like I I mean in your

1116. heart actually deep down, do you believe

1117. that you observe Jesus commands already

  1118. perfectly?

1119. No. So when you're standing on the

1120. foundation, that just means you agree

1121. God's word is always authoritative,

1122. always right. Yes, it has to be rightly

1123. understood. But when it says do not get

1124. drunk on wine but be filled with the

1125. spirit, if you have been getting drunk,

1126. you need correction, right? You need

1127. God's word to help redirect you. Okay?

1128. So that just establishes the idea that

1129. everyone in this church um unless people

1130. are hiding something in their heart

1131. recognizes they need growth in

1132. obedience. Okay. What's the opposite of

  1133. obedience?

1134. Sin. Okay. That also just means kids, I

1135. want you to hear that. Everyone in here,

1136. at least at an outward level, just admit

  1137. admitted they're a sinner.

1138. And that was still not a trick question.

1139. I already know that you guys believe

1140. that. I believe that about myself. Okay?

1141. I'm still a sinner. I'm still in need of

1142. the cross. And unless I somehow uh

1143. become a false teacher, I will never

1144. claim this side of the grave not to be a

1145. sinner. Honestly, the trajectory of my

1146. life has been growing in understanding

1147. of just how much worse of a sinner I am

  1148. than I thought,

1149. right? Which is strangely encouraging

1150. because God just keeps applying more

  1151. grace,

1152. but hopefully not wash, rinse, and

1153. repeat, right? Hopefully that grace is

1154. actually transforming us, right? Meaning

1155. we're becoming more forgiving, quicker

1156. to forgive. We're becoming people who

1157. are more quick to admit their sin. We're

1158. becoming people who do not look at

1159. correction as something dangerous, but

1160. people who realize actually correction

1161. is the only way you grow in obedience.

1162. Okay, I want to give you my main point

1163. for what really is the sermon today and

1164. no longer just an explanation of how

1165. we're organized. Learning to obey Jesus

  1166. requires correction, conviction,

  1167. confession, and encouragement.

1168. Learning to obey Jesus requires

1169. conviction, conf uh con correction,

  1170. conviction, confession, and

  1171. encouragement.

1172. Okay? But it has to start with

1173. correction. If you have not been obeying

1174. in an area, then that needs to be

1175. corrected. And you may already know that

1176. it needs to be corrected. But sometimes

1177. these areas are related to pride and

1178. pride tends to blind us. Uh you do not

1179. need to raise your hands on that. But

1180. how many of you on this question, but

1181. how many of you have thought you were

1182. being obedient and were blind to an area

1183. that you weren't obeying in and then you

1184. experienced correction in some way and

1185. ended up having to agree, wow, I was

1186. totally blind to that. That's happened

1187. to me more than I like to admit.

1188. I like to think, man, if I could just

  1189. take the growth now

1190. um and go back 10 years,

1191. that decade would have been so much

1192. better in terms of obedience. Okay,

1193. which also leads me to um think about

1194. how okay when people that are 10 years

1195. older than me and 10 years farther along

1196. in terms of the length of the time that

1197. they have been uh walking with the Lord

1198. tell me something that's painful to hear

1199. and I don't really want to agree with

1200. what if that's the thing that allows me

1201. to have that time capsule early and live

1202. that decade differently be you know so

1203. so correction is is unbelievably good

1204. and to those who are humble and wise

1205. they know that they know that correction

1206. is good. So, I want to go to uh a couple

  1207. verses about correction.

1208. Okay. Um let's go to um uh Romans 8:28.

    Romans 8:28

1209. And you might think, how is this about

1210. correction? Well, I'll talk to you about

1211. how it's correction. Okay. We talked

1212. about how doubt is uh one of the primary

  1213. battlefields um for

1214. uh growth in personal obedience. And I

1215. think you all agree with that. Doubt is

1216. one of one of the um is one of the

1217. primary battlefields for growth in

1218. personal obedience. Why is that? So let

1219. me give you uh an uh the idea and then

1220. an example of that in my personal life.

1221. Maybe I'll give you two. Okay. So how

1222. many times has God been faithful to you

1223. um in a time of crisis but allowed the

1224. crisis to continue without an answer to

1225. prayer or solution for a time? and

1226. sometimes for a long time. But then now

1227. as you're looking back, you realize,

1228. wow, he worked that all together for my

1229. good. And you actually become glad for

  1230. the crisis. Okay.

1231. How many times did you know the word

1232. said that he was going to work that for

1233. your good, but didn't trust in advance

1234. of the answer or the solution? Okay. I

1235. want to give you one time where I had a

1236. huge victory and I'll never forget it. I

1237. still attribute that victory to the Holy

1238. Spirit, not myself. And another time

1239. where I failed at first and then God

1240. redirected me and it still ended up

  1241. being a ve v victory, but I actually

1242. failed. The first one was I went to

1243. marriage counseling with my wife before

1244. we ever even got married. And uh I asked

1245. the counselor said, "Do you think it's

1246. okay for me to go to seminary full-time

1247. without having a job and have Christine

1248. as a nurse put me through seminary or is

1249. that really not a biblical idea?" And

  1250. cuz I was thinking about it, I I I

1251. believe that the uh according to

1252. scripture, the husband should take on

1253. the responsibility and weight of uh

1254. providing for the family financially and

1255. not the other way around. It does not

  1256. mean women can't work. We've talked

1257. about that before. Um nothing even close

1258. to that. But the primary responsibility,

1259. and I knew this pastor agreed with that.

  1260. He goes, "No, I don't think it's

1261. unbiblical for you to do it, but I'd

1262. like you to make a promise to Christine

1263. if she's ever feeling overly burdened in

1264. this time of putting you through

1265. seminary for I think it was about 3

1266. years or maybe I was already part of the

1267. way in, but it's around there, right?

1268. About the fastest you can accomplish

1269. seminary is about 3 years." And I

1270. thought, I want to just go hard for

1271. three years. And and uh she was willing,

  1272. but I wasn't sure that it was God's

  1273. plan. Um Christine's very

1274. servant-hearted. So he said, "Yes, but I

1275. want you to make her promise that if she

1276. even so much as hints at it's becoming a

1277. burden, that you will quit seminary and

1278. go to work and trust God that he'll help

1279. you finish it later. That you will take

1280. on the burden." And I made that promise

1281. to Christine. I'm in my last semester.

  1282. Okay.

1283. Um Christine loses her job, which means

1284. she doesn't even have to explain that

  1285. it's become a burden, right?

1286. uh she was working at a skilled nurse

1287. facility and I'm in my last semester and

1288. right before she calls me and tells me

1289. this the day before I heard a sermon

1290. where the main point was your crisis is

1291. a gift from Isaiah. It's the portion of

1292. the story where the Assyrians are

1293. knocking on the door of Jerusalem

1294. threatening them with siege warfare

1295. which is terrifying to be starved to

1296. death behind walls. The things that

1297. happen in that kind of siege where are

  1298. hideously grotesque, right? It's

1299. terrifying to be threatened with siege

1300. warfare. 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. And

1301. Isaiah prophesies and tells Hezekiah,

1302. "Do not give into their demands. Trust

1303. the Lord." Okay? And he has to trust him

1304. in advance. And the angel of the Lord or

1305. the destroying angel, I'm not sure when

1306. it says, but an angel of the Lord comes

1307. and Hezekiah trusts and Isaiah trusts

1308. and he puts to death 185,000 soldiers

1309. supernaturally and stops Assyria from

  1310. destroying Jerusalem or effectively

1311. destroying them through siege warfare.

1312. Okay, so that was the story. Your crisis

1313. is a gift. Your crisis is a gift to

  1314. watch God's faithfulness. So, I just

1315. heard that and he said,"I want you the

1316. very next time you have a crisis to

1317. trust God in advance. Commit right now."

1318. He said like that with passion. I'm

1319. like, "I'm going to do it. It's been one

1320. of the huge problems in my life that I

1321. do not trust God in advance. I'm going

1322. to do it." And I was so close to

1323. finishing seminary and now I'm like,

1324. "She lost her job. I have to keep my

1325. promise. I'm going to have to go right

1326. back to work." And then even though it's

1327. only A SEMINARY AWAY, WHO knows when

1328. it'll be finished? And then I remembered

1329. your crisis is a gift, right? So I said,

1330. "This is a gift, honey." Probably the

  1331. wrong thing to say,

1332. especially without any context, but I

1333. we're going to be fine, okay? And I will

  1334. immediately go I I was a personal

1335. trainer at the time, and I I'll

1336. immediately go back and get a job at at

1337. personal training. And you just relax.

1338. You've done such a great job. which that

1339. response is a big deal for me, right?

1340. That's a big change from how I used to

1341. live. Okay. Then the very next day, I'll

1342. say his name out loud uh because I want

1343. to praise him for what he did, but he

1344. would praise God for it. And so I'm also

1345. praising God. Um Chris Berg, a good

1346. friend of mine who played in the Arena

1347. Football League. and one of the teams uh

1348. refused to do a surgery even though

1349. contractually they were obligated, calls

1350. me and says, "Hey, I just got a legal

1351. settlement for $75,000 and God told me

1352. to give you 10% of it."

1353. And I just started laughing cuz my

1354. crisis was literally a gift. I showed it

1355. to Christine. It was the exact amount of

1356. money we needed for those three months

1357. to get through seminary, finish

1358. seminary. I was able to keep my

1359. commitment and didn't have to break my

1360. promise and God helped me finish

1361. seminary anyway. And I trusted him in

1362. advance. I trusted in advance. I was,

1363. you know, colloally speaking, I was so

1364. proud of myself, but really ultimately I

1365. was proud of God. I was so thankful that

1366. he helped me do that. Let me give you

1367. another time. Right at the beginning of

1368. the marriage, we go on a honeymoon to

1369. Maui, right? And Christine at the end of

1370. the first day during the middle of the

1371. night into the second day gets emergency

  1372. room sick.

1373. And I blame God for it. I thought of all

1374. times for my wife to get so sick. We

1375. have so many things fun planned

1376. together, all these things. And now

1377. she's so sick she really shouldn't even

1378. get out of bed. Why would you have it

1379. happen now, God? Right? And in the back

1380. of my mind, I knew I knew and wasn't

  1381. denying it. I don't deserve a wife like

  1382. this. I don't deserve a honeymoon like

1383. this. But there was just this hook in my

1384. heart. I was upset with the Lord. Okay.

1385. And then uh because I didn't really want

1386. to leave her alone. She was really sick.

1387. Uh I decided, you know what? And there

1388. was no kitchenet or anything like this,

1389. but there was this coffee pot, and she

1390. loves ramen noodles. So, I cooked her

1391. ramen noodles in a coffee pot. And while

1392. I was doing that, not in an audible way,

1393. but in the way the spirit uh sometimes

1394. speak to us, he dropped the thought into

1395. my heart that you will know is not a

1396. thought that comes from my flesh. And

1397. what I heard basically paraphrased, what

1398. I felt like the Holy Spirit was

1399. directing me to also through his word

1400. was, "What if I want you to learn how to

1401. serve your wife, not just have fun with

1402. her all the time?" And I laughed out

1403. loud cuz I knew that was God's voice to

1404. me. I knew that's the kind of thing that

1405. he would want to found my marriage on.

1406. And I found myself willing. Yes. And

1407. almost even happy. I can do that

1408. mission. I can take care of her.

1409. And then I I I because it blaming God

1410. for stuff was like the sin of my whole

  1411. life. And I I just I can't say I

  1412. couldn't not. I have no excuse. But I

1413. was just so upset. I was so upset. And

1414. then he basically reminded me of

1415. commands in the scripture to serve my

1416. wife. And I found my heart willing and I

1417. did it. And then there was these windows

1418. of time that she just didn't feel sick.

1419. And it was usually early morning she

1420. felt sick and then she didn't. And then

1421. at night she felt sick again. And we

1422. still bamboo forest. It's like bamboo

1423. that big clack. We still got to do those

1424. things and it was it was amazing. Okay.

1425. So, regarding doubt, what I'm trying to

1426. tell you, what if that's an area that's

1427. for you also somewhat of a besetting sin

1428. and you're realizing, you know what, I

1429. need to trust in him advance. I want to

1430. be as encouraging as that pastor was

1431. that I heard the sermon from. How about

1432. I just say the same thing? Your next

1433. crisis is a gift. Your next big problem

  1434. is a gift. It's a gift a in the

1435. opportunity to trust in him advance and

1436. then have a victory where it's not just

1437. like oh God sorry I didn't believe you

1438. and you were faithful as you always are

1439. but God I believed you in advance

1440. there's a huge blessing in that and it

1441. also guess what makes God look as good

1442. as he actually is to other people to

1443. have that kind of faith so if doubt is

1444. an area where you have been struggling

1445. to obey the Lord in you know um if it's

1446. not of faith it's sins doubt is sin God

1447. is not worthy worthy of your doubt. He's

1448. worthy of your complete trust.

1449. So, can you have a victory in advance? I

1450. believe you can. I believe you can. And

1451. if you can overcome that doubt that

1452. continues to derail you, uh there's more

1453. in terms of personal obedience. I want

1454. to talk about correction for a little

1455. bit, we'll move on to conviction, then

1456. we'll move on to um confession and

1457. encouragement and be done. Okay? It is

1458. my experience. This is anecdotal uh in

1459. the sense that it's not like there's

1460. been some there probably has been a

1461. statistical study, but it's also

1462. something that many pastors I've talked

1463. to have agreed with. Uh we seem to be in

1464. a generation or generations uh where

1465. people are far more reactionary to

1466. correction um than they were maybe a

  1467. couple decades past. It's I think

1468. there's nothing new under the sun.

1469. There's always going to be the flesh

1470. reacting to correction. But it's also

1471. true in my experience that I actually

1472. experience a certain amount of anxiety

1473. when going in to talk to somebody. Uh

1474. either if it's admonishing, correcting,

1475. but especially if it's like rebuke

1476. level, if like the sin is really serious

1477. and they need to be uh pretty heavily

1478. redirected away from it, uh that I'll

1479. just get unfriended. Uh that it'll cause

1480. some kind of big schism in the church.

1481. Um and why? because that kind of thing

1482. has happened and way too regularly even

1483. at this church. And so, um, if that's

1484. true and and maybe just evaluate it for

1485. yourself personally, not for other

1486. people, but are you correctable? Do you

1487. have the kind of humility? You guys all

1488. just admitted that there needs to be

1489. growth in areas of personal obedience

1490. and that you haven't yet accomplished

  1491. it. And let's let's go to Hebrews 4:12.

    Hebrews 4:12

1492. I know AV team, I'm skipping forward

1493. here, but let's go to Hebrews 4:12. For

    Hebrews 4:12

1494. the word of God is living and active,

1495. sharper than any two-edged sword,

1496. piercing to the division of soul and of

1497. spirit, of joints and of marrow, and

1498. discerning the thoughts and intentions

1499. of the heart. You cannot hide any

1500. disobedience from God's word. You cannot

1501. do it. It's not possible. And I believe

1502. you know that. But can you hide it from

1503. other people? Yeah, you can. So, if

1504. someone who loves you enough to speak

1505. the truth into an area of your life

1506. where it is not aligned with scripture,

1507. maybe it's just an admonishing word,

1508. maybe it's just an admonishing word.

1509. Let's go to um Colossians 3:16 real

    Colossians 3:16

1510. quick as well. Skipping ahead again,

1511. Colossians 3:16 says, "Let the word of

    Colossians 3:16

1512. Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and

1513. admonishing one another in all wisdom,

1514. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual

1515. songs with thankfulness in your hearts

1516. to God. admonishment and teaching of one

1517. another is part even of what we're doing

1518. in the service. It's more pronounced in

  1519. our disciplehip communities because

1520. people are actually sharing in a way

1521. that helps other people learn. Um, but

  1522. that admonishing portion, it's it's

1523. everyone in the church. Let's go to

  1524. Titus 2:12 or 2:15, sorry. Titus 2:15.

    Titus 2:12 Titus 2:15

1525. Declare these things, exhort and rebuke

1526. with all authority. Let no one disregard

1527. you. And in context, what's being spoken

1528. about is the gospel and its attendant

1529. applications. Okay? And you might think,

1530. well, yeah, that's what elders and

1531. teachers should do. But it's written as

1532. scripture to everyone. Declare these

1533. things, exhort and rebuke. Probably the

1534. most forceful type of correction is

1535. rebuke with all authority. Let no one

1536. disregard you. Okay. What does that mean

1537. in terms of don't let someone disregard

1538. you? Well, let's go to Proverbs 29:15.

    Proverbs 29:15

1539. This is about children uh but it's

1540. similar. The rod of reproof give wis the

1541. rod and reproof give wisdom but a child

1542. left to himself brings shame to his

1543. mother. You probably haven't some of

1544. these kids probably haven't read Lord of

1545. the Flies and I don't necessarily uh

1546. expect you to or even say you should.

1547. But when I say Lord of the Flies when

1548. children are without any kind of

1549. discipline and protection of authority

1550. it evolves fast in the worst kinds of

1551. things. Okay? You do not want to bring

1552. shame to your mother. That's why you do

1553. need discipline and reproof. The rod is

1554. standing in for I I believe actual

1555. corporal discipline, but I think there

1556. are other ways to discipline children as

1557. well. And reproof uh give wisdom. Okay.

  1558. So,

1559. I'm going to back up just for a second

1560. from this verse two. If you were to ask

1561. me or the elders, why is it uh I agree

1562. with you if you do that people are less

1563. and less corrective and correctable and

1564. and and less and less uh and more and

1565. more reactive. Uh there's less peace in

1566. their hearts because by the way, if

1567. someone tells you something corrective,

1568. you can say, you know, I will pray about

  1569. that. I don't I don't really agree. Um

1570. but I'll take that into prayer and

1571. consider it. That'd be a mature way to

1572. respond. Then you can even come back.

  1573. It's like, I'm just not experiencing

1574. conviction around that issue. You can do

1575. that or you can just atomic bomb the

1576. whole thing and just blow up the

1577. relationship and walk. Oh, how dare you

1578. correct me, you know, unnecessary.

1579. Sometimes correction that goes really

1580. deep and you can see why your heart's

1581. reacting so much. Um but I think what's

1582. been happening is that um for several

1583. generations now on mass, not every uh in

1584. general, not every parent, I think there

1585. are parents in our congregation that

1586. that do a fantastic job and parents that

1587. are growing and learning. Um but I

1588. believe parents have stopped correcting

1589. their children and stopped disciplining

1590. them and that basically generations of

1591. children that uh have not been trained

1592. to have that kind of wisdom are not used

1593. to correction have started to grow up um

1594. in probably every generation it seems

1595. especially true in the millennial

1596. generation I'm in the millennial

1597. generation um and so it's shocking to be

1598. corrected you know what do you think

1599. you're doing uh their concrete is

1600. settled in terms of their character but

1601. while it was runny where there was an

1602. opportunity for them to learn how to be

1603. corrected and see the value of it never

1604. happened. So the concrete settled and

1605. became hardened and boom now everything

1606. feels like a jackhammer to them. You're

1607. contradicting my identity. It feels like

1608. right. I think that may be a part of of

1609. how things devolve to the point they

1610. were. But could we all agree that if

1611. you're not obeying in an area and

1612. especially if you're blind to it, you're

1613. going to need correction? That God's

1614. God's word is the power to do so. But

1615. that since he generally and in my

1616. experience almost never I say almost

1617. never, I've never heard him speak out

1618. loud. He speaks through his word

1619. and he uses other disciples and also

1620. authorities within the church to correct

1621. people. He uses parents to correct

1622. children. So correction is necessary in

1623. God's general plan of how to do that is

1624. to use other people in your life who can

1625. see from the outside. Can they see your

1626. thoughts or intentions though of the

1627. heart? No, they cannot. Can they see the

1628. symptoms of what looks like sin?

1629. disorder in your thought and disorder in

1630. your actions. Some kind of sinful thing

1631. where it's just not obedient. Something

1632. seems wrong. No. But can you hide the

1633. thoughts and intents? No. That's not

1634. what I was intending. Even though you

1635. know in your heart you were. Okay.

1636. You're still not free just because you

1637. fooled the person because the Holy

1638. Spirit will lay on that piercing

  1639. conviction, that scalpel sharp

1640. conviction. But if you continue

1641. resisting that, you know what happens?

1642. Your conscience starts becoming seared.

1643. seared like the nerve endings of your

1644. spirit become dull to his conviction and

1645. now you will definitely become more and

1646. more blind to the severity of that and

1647. that is at least in my experience

1648. biblically and in my own life when God

1649. starts bringing the hard knock kind of

1650. correction that you can't get out of

1651. that it's not even someone else bringing

1652. or maybe some authority is but that just

1653. some bad things happen because he's

1654. bringing you you to an end of himself.

1655. So if you actually want to grow, let's

1656. let's actually do another show of hands.

1657. Cuz in this case, the right answer is

1658. everyone raised their hands. Who wants

1659. to grow in obedience? And then look

1660. around. Who wants to grow in obedience?

1661. Everyone wants to grow in obedience.

1662. Well, you're not going to be able to

  1663. escape correction.

1664. if you want to grow in obedience. So,

1665. wouldn't it be amazing if as a

1666. congregation we broke that at least

  1667. observational generational trend of

1668. reacting so strongly to correction and

1669. actually sought it and then just by the

1670. way if the Holy Spirit doesn't convict

1671. you and you're not experiencing that

1672. even that you can fool yourself on. But

1673. it's not human beings that transform

1674. you. They don't correct you effectively.

1675. The Holy Spirit corrects you

1676. effectively. So you can say no, I don't

  1677. think that's an issue. I think I'm being

1678. misunderstood here. But if you know in

  1679. their heart they're right, then it's

1680. just going to lead to more obedience.

1681. You don't have to deny it. You don't

1682. have to hide it. And what it should lead

1683. to, let's put the main point up, is

1684. confession, it should lead to

  1685. confession. Let's read James 5:16. We're

    James 5:16

1686. almost done here. James 5:16. Uh that

    James 5:16

1687. was the third to last on the Yeah.

1688. Therefore, confess your sins to one

1689. another and pray for one another that

1690. you may be healed. The prayer of a

1691. righteous person has great power as it

1692. is working. Please no show of hands

  1693. here. You'll understand why. When's the

1694. last time you confessed your sin to

1695. another person. If you're saying you

1696. really want to learn to obey and if you

1697. have agreed biblically that God's word

1698. will correct the very most inner parts

1699. in our lives. And if you agree that

1700. because of the command to disciple,

1701. teaching them to observe everything com

  1702. I've commanded you, he's intentionally

1703. using other people to do that in your

1704. life. Even people that aren't your

1705. official mentor or aren't an elder

1706. admonishing you on it. You ought to

1707. expect that to happen in a healthy

1708. church. That ought to happen. Okay?

1709. Then you would be confessing your sin

1710. from time to time, right? So, if that

  1711. hasn't been happening, and I don't know

1712. that it hasn't been happening, and I'm

1713. not trying to give you a guilt trip, but

1714. if it hasn't been happening, maybe it's

1715. because you're stalled out on growing in

1716. obedience. So, maybe that's something

1717. you could examine before we go to the

  1718. Lord's Supper. Today,

  1719. let's go to Hebrews 10:24-2.

1720. I told you I talk about the agenda and

1721. how it needs to be pearl of great price

1722. agenda, right? You sell everything by

1723. the field just for the pearl. You sell

1724. everything by the field just for the

1725. pearl. and the pearl is Jesus Christ and

1726. his gospel. Okay? Have you sold

1727. everything? I'm not talking even about

1728. like the early church did. I'm not

1729. talking go sell your house and do all

1730. these things. If God tells you to do it,

1731. go ahead. But he's you're never going to

1732. outgive him. You're never going to

1733. outgive him. He says test me in this.

1734. You can't. But it may not be the wise

1735. time to just go and sell everything.

1736. There's wisdom in figuring that out. But

1737. have you at least metaphorically

1738. speaking sold out? You sold out. Well,

1739. if you sold out, then

  1740. before I was a pastor, before I was

1741. paid, I realized my life has to revolve

1742. around building up the church.

1743. And my dad modeled that to me so

1744. amazingly. But I thought, you know what?

  1745. I thought I couldn't work in the church

  1746. because of my past. I had a a

  1747. misunderstanding of what truly

1748. disqualifies you. But I thought for sure

  1749. I couldn't be a pastor. But uh God

1750. changed my mind through correcting me

1751. from other people to my great excitement

1752. because all I want to do I thought,

1753. well, I could be a janitor in a church.

1754. I thought, you know, I'd rather do that

1755. than be a personal trainer for NFL, NHL,

1756. and MLB players. I'd rather be a

1757. janitor. And then then at the time, my

1758. sister told me, you know, that's

1759. actually a Bible verse. better one day

  1760. in your house.

  1761. >> That's one kind of calling. But I

  1762. thought since I can't do it, well, I

1763. should probably get a job um that allows

1764. me to at least spend a lot of time

1765. helping build up build up the church and

1766. maybe also a good paying one with

1767. reason. I had to reject the idea of

1768. trying to become rich. That was one of

1769. my original goals, but maybe one that

1770. that allows me to give generously, too.

1771. Cuz God had captured my heart for

1772. building up the church, right? That's

1773. what I want my life to be about, my

1774. family's life about, and the church

1775. about. Is that what your life is about?

1776. Is that what you're all about?

  1777. That's God's plan. You know, that's what

  1778. Jesus died for.

1779. To establish a church, an assembly of

1780. people organized the way he wants them

1781. to be organized. They have more than one

1782. thing in common, but they are forgiven

1783. of their sin and they're saved and

1784. they'll spend eternity with one another,

  1785. right?

1786. What did uh Maximus say? What we do in

1787. life echoes in eternity, right? It's not

1788. a Bible verse, but there's some truth in

1789. that biblically. What you do on this

1790. earth to build up the church has eternal

  1791. value.

1792. So, I'm going to offer you a correction.

  1793. It's very general. It's not aimed at a

1794. single person. It's true, I think, for

1795. Americans in general, but it's also true

1796. for Christians in general. We're way too

1797. busy all the time. Can we agree on that?

1798. way too busy all the time. Way too busy

1799. all the time. And I think sometimes have

1800. not looked at our lives and thought to

1801. ourselves, are the things I'm busy with

1802. actually the things that God wants me to

1803. be busy with? And I'm not even saying

1804. you're busy with bad things.

1805. I think a lot of us are busy with lots

1806. of good things and just too many of

1807. them. Would you be willing to consider

1808. and pray about God, what of the things

1809. that I'm busy with do you actually want

1810. me to do? And if I'm feeling like I do

1811. not have t enough time to be in your

1812. word, I do not have time to pray, I do

1813. not have enough time to serve in your

1814. church, I do not have enough time to

1815. commit to your church in deep ways,

  1816. consider am

1817. consider sacrificing some of those

  1818. things.

1819. Consider sacrificing some of those

  1820. things.

1821. And you know what? If you want to talk

1822. about that, if you want to help, you

1823. can. What I do is I write down the

1824. things that I'm committed to. I write

1825. them down and then I ask God, which one

1826. of those things do you want me to

  1827. actually be committed to?

1828. I would like my children to every one of

1829. them wants to be three sport athletes.

1830. Not going to happen. It's too much. It

1831. makes the whole family about sports all

1832. the time. All the time. I do not have

1833. the time to keep my commitments to the

1834. Lord and do that. Right?

1835. So there are sacrifice. If there are no

1836. sacrifices, it's not pearl of great

  1837. price. It can't be. Okay. So I'll I'll

1838. I'll just say that consider praying

1839. about that and look at your life. Am I

1840. devoted the way I'm supposed to be? And

1841. you know what? I can guarantee you if

1842. you devote yourself the way that that if

1843. everyone in this room devotes themselves

1844. the way it ought to, we will certainly

1845. experience the power of the Holy Spirit

1846. like the early church did. It can't not

1847. happen. He works so powerfully to fully

  1848. devoted people. Okay?

1849. So, you may need to confess, Lord, I've

1850. been practicing too much of my own

1851. agenda. Now, let me encourage you

1852. because encouragement is like the

1853. nitrogen. I know that correction is like

1854. a weed killer and some weeds need to be

1855. killed. You just constantly spray weed

1856. killer, you kill all the grass. Nitrogen

1857. helps us grow. Encouragement helps us

1858. grow. You know what Jesus did to

1859. constantly help you to redirect towards

1860. obedience? He died for you. He died for

1861. you. He didn't deserve to die. He's the

1862. only son that always obeyed, who did not

1863. need to. He did learn how to obey

1864. through suffering and he did even grow

1865. in obedience, but not because he ever

1866. sinned, right? The only truly pleasing

1867. son of God is Jesus Christ. And he has

  1868. to die for you.

1869. No one's ever going to sell out more for

1870. you than God. So, he is worthy of you

1871. selling out for him. And the Holy Spirit

1872. will confirm that in your heart. So

1873. let's go to the place where especially

1874. in a service you can examine your heart,

1875. ask for forgiveness. If you truly feel

  1876. corrected, right? Human being

1877. correction, the Holy Spirit will use it

1878. if he's in agreement with it. If he's

1879. not, because I don't think every single

1880. person in the church is necessarily too

1881. too busy. You need to let the Holy

1882. Spirit apply that or not apply that to

1883. you by conviction individually. That's

  1884. really important. But 1 Corinthians 11

1885. says that we are to examine ourselves

1886. before the we go to the table. 1

    1 Corinthians 11:28

1887. Corinthians 11:28. Let me read it to

  1888. you.

  1889. I'm in the wrong chapter. 11:28. Let a

1890. person examine himself then and so eat

1891. of the bread and drink of the cup.

1892. Wives need to be cherished. Maybe you

1893. haven't cherished your wife. Husbands

1894. need to be honored. Maybe you haven't

1895. really been honoring your husband.

1896. Children need to obey their parents.

1897. Maybe you have not been obeying and

1898. you're making it hard for them, you

1899. know. So, whatever it is that the Holy

1900. Spirit's laid on your heart, I'm going

1901. to take a full 2 minutes before

1902. communion. Um, I'll have Emily, if

1903. you're willing, come up and maybe she

1904. can play some guitar music and and we

1905. can really, but a real two minutes of

1906. examining oursel and thinking, how does

1907. the Holy Spirit want to correct me? I

1908. want to grow in obedience. And you have

1909. all the grace you need, you could ever

1910. possibly need, inexhaustible at that

1911. table. Because what that table

1912. represents in a real spiritual way is

1913. the death and resurrection of Jesus

1914. Christ. It represents his body broken

  1915. and his blood shed.

1916. And so, like a favorite teacher of mine

1917. often said, don't leave any grace on the

1918. table. Learning to obey Jesus requires

  1919. correction, conviction, confession, and

1920. encouragement. Amen. Heavenly Father, I

1921. pray that as we examine ourselves

1922. for the next two minutes, that your Holy

1923. Spirit would speak to us clearly. We

1924. know he will not condemn us. That he

1925. would speak to us specifically. That we

1926. would know to reject the voice of the

1927. enemy in accusations and condemnation.

1928. But that we would know the voice of our

  1929. loving father,

1930. the voice of our savior

1931. and how we need to be directed and

1932. redirected to obedience before we come

1933. for the forgiveness and for the power we

1934. need to obey your command to go and make

1935. disciples. I pray these things in Jesus

  1936. name. Amen.
