Where Did God Come From_ Who He Was Before Anything Existed (No Ads)

He was not born. He was not built. Everything you

have ever known came from something, but God came from

nothing and no one, because before there was a somewhere

for anything to come from, there was only Him. That

may sound like the largest claim a person could ever make,

and it is. But if you have ever felt like

your own life came from nowhere, like you are a

small accident the world could have done without, then this

is not only a question about God far away in eternity.

It is a question about the ground under your feet,

because if there truly is a being who never began,

then existence is not an accident, and neither are you.

It is held up by someone, and so are you.

Every child asks it eventually, and every honest adult still

wonders it in the quiet. If God made everything, then

who made God? When we ask who made God, we

are already picturing God as one more object in the world,

one more thing sitting on the shelf of the universe,

waiting for someone to explain how it got there. We

are treating him like a chair, or a mountain, or

a star, or a newborn, all of which needed something

before them to bring them into being. We take the

rule that governs everything inside the world, that each thing

must have a cause, and we try to apply it

to the one who stands outside the world and made

the rule in the first place. The Bible opens by

quietly taking that assumption apart. The very first words of

Scripture are these, In the beginning God created the heavens

and the earth. Genesis 1.1 In the beginning... The beginning

of what? Not the beginning of God. The beginning of

the heavens and the earth. The beginning of matter, of space,

of the sky and the ground and the light. The

beginning of time itself. That single verse draws a line

across all of reality. On one side of the line

is everything that had a start. On the other side

of the line is God, already there, already himself, already complete,

before the first second ticked. The verse does not say,

in the beginning, God began. It says, in the beginning,

God created. He is not standing inside the beginning as

one of the things that started. He is standing behind it,

before it, as the one who caused the beginning to begin.

Think about a long line of dominoes. Each one falls

because the one before it pushed it. You can trace

the falling back, domino after domino, but the whole chain

only makes sense if there was a first hand that

started it, a hand that was not itself a domino.

If every single thing needed something before it to cause it,

and there was no first cause that needed nothing, then

nothing could ever have started at all. The very fact

that anything exists right now means there must be something

at the bottom of it that was never caused, never pushed,

never made. Reason itself points to an uncaused one. The

Bible simply tells us His name. And there is a

strange relief in reaching that bottom. As long as you

believe everything must have a cause behind it, your mind

can never rest, because every answer only opens another door,

and behind that door another, forever. But if there is

one who was never caused, then the search finally has

a floor to stand on. You are not falling through

an endless nothing. There is something solid underneath it all,

someone who does not need to be held up because

he is the one holding. That is not a gap

in the reasoning. That is the end of the falling.

So the question who made God only makes sense for

something that had a beginning, and God did not. Asking

what made the uncreated one is a little like asking

what is north of the North Pole. The words fit together.

They sound like a real question, but there is nothing

there to find, because you have already reached the place

past which the question cannot go. God is not a

link in the chain of causes. He is the reason

the chain exists at all. There is a moment in

Scripture where God tells us his own name, and that

name says everything about where he came from. A man

stood before God in the desert and asked what he

should call him. He wanted a title, a story, something

solid to carry back to his people. And God gave

an answer no human being could have invented. God said,

I am who I am, Exodus chapter 3, verse 14.

Think about how strange that is to be called. Every

name we know points to something outside itself. We are

named after parents and grandparents, after meanings and hopes and

places our families loved. Our names have stories behind them,

roots that run back into other people. But when God

reaches back for the story behind his own name, he

finds only himself I am who I am. Not I became,

not I came from, not I was given life by

another and named by a hand that shaped me. Simply,

I am. That name is built from the plain and

ancient word for being, for existing, for simply being there.

It is God telling us that his existence is not

an event that happened to him. He did not receive

life the way you and I received life, handed to

us by parents who were handed it by theirs. He

does not hold his being the way a cup holds water,

as something poured in from the outside that could one

day be poured back out. He is being itself. To

exist is not something God does. It is what God is.

And notice the tense of it. Not I was. Not

I will be. I am. There is a kind of

endless present tense to God, a right now that never

slides into the past. For us, every moment we live

immediately dies and becomes memory. We are always losing the

present as fast as we get it. But God does

not lose His moments because He does not live inside

the current that carries ours away. When he says, I am,

he is standing in a now that has no yesterday

behind it and no tomorrow rushing at it. He is

simply fully always present. Ask anything else in all the

world where it came from, and it will have an answer.

Ask the river, and it will point you upstream to

the spring. Ask the spring, and it will point you

to the rain. Ask the rain, and it will point

you to the sea and the sun. Ask the child

where she came from, and she will point to her mother,

and her mother to hers, back and back through all

the generations. Everything that exists is standing on the shoulders

of something that came before it. Everything is borrowing its

life from somewhere else. But ask God where he came from,

and there is nowhere for him to point, because there

is nothing and no one behind him. He is the

only one who can answer that question with his own name,

and nothing more. I am. That is where I came from.

I came from myself, because I always was. You and

I are here today, but there was a time we

were not, and there will come a day our bodies

return to the dust. Our existence is borrowed. It has

edges on both ends. But when God says, I am,

He is telling us there are no edges to Him.

No day He started. No source He drew from. No

shelf He came off of. He simply is, and always was,

and always will be, and there is nothing behind that

to explain, because there is nothing behind him at all.

This is the deepest thing that can ever be said

about God, and it is the whole answer to our question.

Where did God come from? From nowhere. He is the

one from whom everywhere came. We have to be careful here,

because the human mind keeps trying to sneak time back

into the picture. When we hear that God has always existed,

we tend to imagine an enormously long past. We picture

God as very, very old, an ancient white-haired figure who

has been around for an unimaginable number of years, stretching

backward and backward without end. We make him the oldest

thing in the room. But that is still not big enough.

That still leaves God trapped inside time, only with a

very long history behind him. Scripture says something stranger and

far greater than that. Listen again to the words of

Moses in the Psalms. Before the mountains were brought forth,

or ever you had formed the earth and the world,

from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Psalm chapter 90

Psalms 90:2

verse 2. from everlasting to everlasting, not a long line

with God waiting at the far end of it, but

no line at all. God does not have a past

that stretches out behind him, because a past is a

thing that time makes, and God made time. Time is

a creature. It is part of the heavens and the

earth that came to be in the beginning, and the

God who made time is not stuck walking through it

the way we are, one slow day after another, unable

to reach yesterday and unable to see tomorrow. Try to

picture it this way. You are inside a story, reading

it one page at a time, and you cannot see

what is coming because you have to wait for the

page to turn. but the one who wrote the story

holds the whole book in his hands at once. The

first page and the last page are both open in

front of him. Your birth and your death, the day

you were baptized, and the day you buried someone you loved,

the morning you are living right now, are all pages

God sees together, all at once, none of them ahead

of him and none of them behind. He is not

waiting to find out how your life goes. He is

not aging as your years pass. He is outside the book,

holding it, reading every line of it in one eternal glance.

This is why the Bible can put words like these

in his mouth. I am the first and I am

the last. Isaiah, chapter 44, verse 6. He is the first,

Isaiah 44:6

not because he won a race and crossed the starting

line before everyone else, but because there is no before

him at all. And he is the last, not because

he will barely outlive the rest of us, but because

when everything that had a beginning has finally worn away,

when the mountains have crumbled and the stars have burned out,

he will still simply be unchanged, undimmed, exactly as he

always was. And because he sees the whole book at once,

he has already seen how your story ends. He is

not anxiously watching your life unfold, hoping it turns out well.

He is not down here in the current with you,

unsure of what the next bend will bring. From where

he stands, outside of time, your last chapter is as

clear to him as your first, and he is not

afraid of it. The days that frighten you the most,

the ones you cannot see around, he has already looked

at with steady eyes. You are walking toward them one

page at a time, but he is already there, waiting,

the same God on that page as on this one.

For a heart that is tired, this is very quiet

good news. The God you are praying to tonight is

not aging. He is not running low on days. He

is not one step closer to his own end than

he was when your grandmother knelt down and prayed to him,

or when Moses did thousands of years ago. The one

who holds your whole life in his hands has no

sunset of his own coming. He will not grow old

and forget you. He cannot. There is no clock ticking

against him. Now we come to something that changes the

color of everything. If God never began, then God never

needed anything to begin him. And if he needed nothing

to bring him into being, then he needs nothing from

the world he made to keep him going either. When

the Apostle Paul stood one day in the city of Athens,

he was surrounded by people who had built temples on

every corner and carried food and drink to their idols,

imagining that their gods would grow weak and hungry without

their care. And Paul said something to them that must

have stopped the whole crowd cold. The God who made

the world and everything in it is not served by

human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself

gives to everyone life and breath and everything else. Acts

Acts 17:24

chapter 17 verses 24 and 25. He is not served

as though he needed anything. Sit with that. Every other

thing in existence takes in order to keep going. The

fire needs the wood, or it dies. The body needs

the bread, or it fails. The flower needs the sun

and the rain, or it withers. Even the strongest, most

independent person you have ever known is leaning, every second,

on ten thousand things they did not make and cannot control,

the air, the light, the beating of a heart they

never told to beat. All of it is borrowed. All

of it is held up from the outside. But God

leans on nothing. He is not fed. He is not

propped up. He is not kept alive by a single

thing beyond himself. Jesus said it about his Father with

a startling simplicity. For as the Father has life in himself,

John chapter 5 verse 26, life in himself, not life

John 5:26

given to him, not life he has to go out

and gather and defend. The life is inside him, and

it never runs low, because it never came from anywhere

that could ever take it back. He is the spring

that no one dug, and no drought can dry. Now

watch what this does to the whole story, because it

turns something cold into something warm. It means that when

God made the world, he was not filling a hole

in himself. He was not lonely and hunting for company.

He was not empty and reaching out to be filled.

He was already full, already complete, already lacking nothing at all.

Which means creation was never God taking something he was missing.

It was God giving out of what he already overflowed with.

The world was not something God required in order to

be happy. The world is a gift he freely chose

to make from a fullness that was already spilling over

before the first star was ever lit. There is one

more thing that flows straight out of all of this,

and it may be the part your heart needs most.

A God who had no beginning and who needs nothing

from anyone is a God who cannot be changed by

anything either. Think about why things change. Everything we know

changes because something acts on it from the outside or

because it is running down from the inside. The iron

rusts because the air works on it. The candle shrinks

because the flame burns it. We ourselves change because the

years press on us, because our bodies wear, because the

things around us push and pull and shape us into

someone a little different than we were. All change comes

from either need or pressure. But God has no needs

to be met, and no pressure that can reach him

from outside. There is nothing older than he is to

shape him, and nothing stronger than he is to move him.

He is what he has always been, and he will

be exactly that forever. God says it about himself in

the plainest words, For I the Lord do not change.

Malachi 3.6 He does not have good days and bad days.

He does not warm toward you one week and cool

toward you the next. He is not kind when things

are going well and distant when they are not. The

love that was already full before the world was made

is the same love bending toward you right now, and

it will be the same love waiting for you on

your very last day. Nothing you do can make him

love you more, because he already loves you with everything

he is, and nothing you have done can make him

love you less, because that love was never built on

you in the first place. It was there before you were,

and it does not run on your performance. For a

soul that is tired of trying to earn its way,

that is rest. You are not dealing with a god

whose heart moves like the weather. You are dealing with

the one steady thing in all of existence, the one

fixed point that every shifting, breaking, aging thing can finally

lean on. When everything else in your life is changing

faster than you can hold on to it, he is not.

He is the rock precisely because he never began and

never depends on anything, and a God like that can

be trusted all the way to the end. Here is

where the question who was God before anything existed becomes

almost too beautiful to say out loud. Because the picture

most of us secretly carry is of a single, silent

figure sitting alone in an endless dark, waiting for something, anything,

to finally happen. A god with no one to talk to,

no one to love, nothing to do but exist by

himself in the cold for a length of time we

cannot even imagine. And that picture... is simply wrong. Turn

to the opening of the Gospel of John, and you

find a verse that reaches back even further than Genesis does.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was

with God, and the Word was God. John chapter 1

John 1:1

verse 1. Before the world, before the light, before the

beginning itself, there was already a with. God was with God.

There was already relationship. There was already a face turned

toward another face in love. The dark was never silent,

because the dark was never empty. The Bible, slowly and carefully,

across its whole length, shows us that the one God

has always lived as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Not

three gods, but one God. Yet within that one, God

there has always been knowing and being known, loving and

being loved, giving and receiving without end. God was never

a lonely single point, floating in nothing. God was a

fellowship of love, long before there was anyone outside of

him to love. He did not learn how to love

once creation gave him someone to practice on. Love was

already his life. This is worth stopping to feel, because

it answers something we almost never think to ask. We

ask where God came from, but underneath that, we are

often really asking whether love is at the bottom of everything,

or whether it is only a small thing that showed

up late, an accident that appeared in a cold universe

by chance. And the answer Scripture gives is that love

was there first. before the atoms, before the light, before

there was a single thing that could be measured or weighed.

There was a Father loving a Son, and a Son

loving the Father, in the joy of the Spirit. Love

is not a latecomer to the story. Love is older

than the story. It is the very thing the story

came out of. When you love someone today, you are

not doing something strange in a heartless world. You are

doing the oldest thing there is, the thing that was

going on inside God before the world had a first day.

And Jesus himself remembered it. On the last night before

he died, he prayed out loud to his Father and said,

Glorify me in your own presence with the glory that

I had with you before the world existed. John chapter

John 17:5

17 verse 5. In that same prayer, he reached back

to a love with no birthday and spoke of how

the Father had loved him before the foundation of the world.

John chapter 17 verse 24. Let those words be as

John 17:24

large as they truly are. Before the world existed, there

was glory being shared between them. Before the foundation of

the world, there was love already flowing. Not silence, not emptiness,

not a cold and waiting God tapping his fingers in

the dark. Love, already ancient, already perfect, already full, before

there was a single created thing to receive it. This

is why the Bible can say the plainest and most

staggering sentence about who God is, that God is love.

He does not merely do loving things now and then,

the way we manage to on our better days. Love

is what He is, all the way down in His

very being. And that could never be true of a

God who had spent forever alone, because love has to

have someone to love. A solitary God could only become

loving later, once He had made a world to aim

His love at. But the God of the Bible was

never solitary. Love was already happening inside His own life

before the world began, and the world came pouring out

of that love the way light pours out of the sun,

not because the sun is missing anything, but because it

is so full it cannot help but shine. So who

was God before anything existed? He was complete. He was full.

He was loving and being loved within himself, needing nothing,

lacking nothing, waiting for nothing. And out of that overflowing fullness,

he made everything you have ever seen. And he made

it through his Son. Scripture says of Jesus that he

is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1.17 Look closely at the two halves of that sentence,

because they carry the whole message. He is before all things.

There is that eternity again, that one who stands on

the far side of every beginning, before the first thing

was a thing at all. But then comes the part

we rush past too quickly. In him all things hold together.

He is not only the one who existed before the world,

he is the one holding the world up at this

very moment. The same gospel of John tells us that

through him all things were made, and without him not

one thing was made that has been made. Every mountain

you have ever stood beneath, every ocean you have ever heard,

every face you have ever loved, came into being through

the One who Himself never came into being. He is

the Maker who was never made, the source of every

living thing who has life in Himself. Trace anything that

exists back far enough, and you do not arrive at

an accident or an empty nothing. You arrive at Him.

This is the hinge of everything we have said. The

God with no beginning is not far away and retired,

sitting behind the stars, finished with his work, like a

builder who put up a house and drove away. The

same power that was already there before the first atom

is the power keeping the atoms from flying apart right now,

this second, while you breathe. Every heartbeat inside your chest

is on loan from the one whose heart was never

started by anyone. Every breath you draw is being handed

to you in this moment by the God who breathes

on his own and never grows tired. And here is

the wonder that ties it all together. The God who

needed nothing still made you. He was not lonely, and

yet He made you. He was not empty, and yet

He made room in His world for you. He did

not create you to fill some ache in Himself, which

means you were never a tool He required in order

to feel whole. You were a gift He wanted. There

is a wide and beautiful difference between being needed and

being wanted. A drowning man needs a rope, but he

does not love it. He grabs it because he has

no choice. God had every choice. He was already full,

already happy, already complete without you, and He made you anyway,

not out of need, but out of love that simply

wanted you to be. That is not a smaller thing

than being needed. It is a far greater one. Maybe

you came into this feeling like your life began in

the middle of nowhere and is drifting toward nowhere. Maybe

you feel forgotten, like the world moved on and quietly

left you behind, like you are too small and too

tired and too ordinary to matter to the one who

lit the stars. Maybe you are older now than you

once were and the days have grown quieter than they

used to be, and the house is emptier, and you

find yourself wondering if God even still remembers your name

in all of that silence, then hear this and let

it settle down into the deep places. The God who

was already there before the beginning is the same God

who is with you at the end of this ordinary,

unremarkable day. He did not run out of years while

you were waiting on him. He did not lose track

of you somewhere among the galaxies. The one who holds

all things together has not for one instant let go

of you. You are not holding your own life up

by yourself, gripping the edge with tired hands, hoping you

can last. You never were. Your life is being held

by the very hands that were already reaching out in

love before the world itself was made. And you are

not as alone as you feel. The God who was

never alone, who has lived forever in a love that

never had a beginning, did not make you to sit

by yourself in the quiet. He made you to be

drawn into that same love, to belong to the fellowship

that has been full and warm since before the first morning.

the loneliness you carry, is real, and he does not

brush it aside. But it is not the truest thing

about you. The truest thing about you is that you

were wanted by a God who needed no one, and

that same God has drawn near enough to be found

by anyone who reaches for him. You may feel like

you are calling into an empty room. You are not.

You are speaking to the one who was already listening

before you learned to speak at all. Where did God

come from? He did not come from anywhere, because everywhere

came from him. Who was he before anything existed? He

was full and loving and enough, needing no one and nothing,

and yet he turned all of that fullness toward a

world that never had to exist, and he made it,

And he made you. He has no beginning, which means

his love for you has no first day that you

could ever arrive too late for. And he has no end,

which means there will never be a last day when

that love finally runs dry. He simply is, He always was,

He always will be, and He knows your name. If
