  1. We've been doing a a uh series on sound

  2. doctrine

  3. um looking at the word of God

  4. as our guide and our only guide to

  5. sufficiency of the scripture.

  6. So,

  7. uh, we have a sufficient scripture, a

  8. sufficient salvation, a sufficient God,

  9. and he's poured his grace and mercy out

  10. upon us.

  11. Not everyone is going to go to heaven.

  12. I mean, we all know that. Um,

  13. some are and some are not. the good news

  14. and and bad news about

  15. those things. We want to be

  16. understanding the good news

  17. and the grace of God. Open your Bibles

  18. this morning to Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  19. And we've been looking at the decrees of

  20. God.

  21. We've looked at God's decree to his

  22. creation.

  23. That's all through the Bible. Genesis to

  24. Revelation. God's going to wrap things

  25. up.

  26. In the beginning was God and in the

  27. ending is God

  28. and we're in between. And looking at his

  29. word,

  30. understanding who God is. I think it's

  31. important for us to

  32. uh if you're a new Christian or a young

  33. Christian,

  34. what we know about God is so important.

  35. And it's so important because that's

  36. what he says,

  37. you know, that we should uh know him and

  38. put him first in our lives. And we don't

  39. even know how to do that. We need God's

  40. word for that. Even we never graduate

  41. from this.

  42. So we open the word of God and today

  43. we're going to be looking at the subject

  44. of predestination.

  45. Predestination.

  46. And

  47. you know some people

  48. and this is this is a controversial

  49. subject

  50. and you know some people don't

  51. understand

  52. believe what the Bible says. That's

  53. where we are. I, you know, this is not

  54. something I thought up or, you know, the

  55. theologians that I like to listen to

  56. thought up. This is in the word of God.

  57. So that word predestination

  58. is in the Bible. You It's not like,

  59. well, it's nowhere in the Bible like

  60. some people try to say, "Oh, that word's

  61. nowhere in the Bible." Well,

  62. it is. And we study the New Testament

  63. Greek and we study the Old Testament

  64. Hebrew. I I am a scholar in neither. But

  65. I have books from scholars who are

  66. so they help me wander along on these

  67. things. And we come to this word

  68. predestination.

  69. There are several words in the Greek

  70. language uh for predestination. There

  71. are two nouns and five verbs.

  72. for predestination. So, we can't say

  73. it's not in the Bible.

  74. It is in the Bible. What we have to say

  75. is maybe we don't quite understand what

  76. it is because we've never looked at it

  77. as God looks at it and what God's word

  78. says about it. We don't want to add

  79. anything to it or take anything away

  80. from it. And as we begin here in chapter

  81. 6 and verse 15, here's the word.

  82. Here is the word for us. And Paul

  83. writes, "And your feet shod with the

  84. preparation of the gospel of peace." So

  85. there's that word predestined.

  86. And notice it is for Christians.

  87. And it is the gospel of peace. has been

  88. the gospel has been predestined to be

  89. peace

  90. and you know the Bible says we should

  91. stand in that in that predestined part

  92. of the word of God and what God has

  93. done.

  94. We we didn't do any of this. We didn't,

  95. you know, prepare the gospel. We didn't

  96. prepare peace. you know, we're dependent

  97. on God here

  98. to do what God says and we should, you

  99. know, predetermine

  100. uh to prepare here with the gospel of

  101. peace. And above all, Paul goes on, but

  102. that's just a part of our armor. And

  103. this allows us to see that word in

  104. context here where, you know, God has

  105. predestined something and and then we

  106. we're to stand in it. We're to um

  107. prepare and do what God has done. You

  108. know, we do what God has already done.

  109. That's what Paul is saying here. And we

  110. follow in these things. Well, you know,

  111. when well, when do we when did we

  112. prepare? Look back in verse 10. Finally,

  113. my brethren, be strong in the Lord and

  114. in the power of his might. So

  115. God's might has been predestined

  116. for us Christian

  117. to grow in and this is God's supply you

  118. know we you know we count we you know we

  119. share with each other we suffer with

  120. each other we rejoice with each other

  121. all of one anothers we all do those

  122. things together well here the Bible says

  123. for us to do things with God and take

  124. advantage of something that God has

  125. already predetermed determined

  126. for us. And here it is the the light,

  127. the power of his might being strong in

  128. the Lord. And Paul says the preparation

  129. of the gospel of peace is what God has

  130. already prepared for us. So, you know,

  131. we fulfill what God ordains. I mean,

  132. that's what it says here. Turn over to

  133. chapter two. This is a real good one. It

  134. talks about the gift of salvation. and

  135. that salvation and that faith is a gift

  136. up there in verses 8 and N.

  137. Awesome verses. But look at verse 10.

  138. We are his God's workmanship. It takes a

  139. long English word to explain what we

  140. are. We're a work of God.

  141. And we're a work of God that he has

  142. already predestined. He's already

  143. predetermined

  144. uh and created in Christ Jesus. That's

  145. where it's all at. Don't miss that. Unto

  146. good works.

  147. We should be doing these things. And

  148. then Paul adds, "Which God

  149. has before ordained that we should walk

  150. in them." Well, there's that word

  151. predestined. God has predestined that we

  152. walk in these good works that he has so

  153. supplied for us from his son. And if

  154. you'll remember, go back to chapter one

  155. of Ephesians. And this is an area that

  156. we looked at as we began

  157. this series on the decrees of God.

  158. And you know, we should be, you know,

  159. believing under good works. That's what

  160. the gospel is for us. And we fulfill

  161. what God ordains.

  162. And you know, God is the one who

  163. predestined the elect.

  164. That's what Paul says in chapter one

  165. verse five. Predestined. There's that

  166. word. Don't say predestination is not in

  167. the Bible. There it is.

  168. Uh us to what? Adoption.

  169. How does adoption work? Well, the parent

  170. do all the work.

  171. The kids don't do any work. The parents

  172. do all the work, then they adopt. And

  173. that's what God did. He did all the

  174. work. And he's adopted us in in his son

  175. by Christ to himself. And here according

  176. to the good pleasure of his will. Why

  177. did God do this? He decided that's what

  178. he would do.

  179. And he's the sovereign one. And remember

  180. verse 11 over there, whom we obtained an

  181. inheritance. What do you do to get an

  182. inheritance?

  183. No works for inheritance. It's just like

  184. adoption. It's a gift.

  185. And here it's a gift from God. And it's

  186. in Christ by which

  187. uh heaven and earth and him. So I mean

  188. all the angels, fallen angels, good

  189. angels, holy angels,

  190. the demons, the devil, no one is going

  191. to escape

  192. who Jesus is and what Jesus has done.

  193. But verse 9 says, having made known unto

  194. us,

  195. that's what the word of God is. That's

  196. what God does. He makes known to us his

  197. glorious gospel and the riches of his

  198. grace up there

  199. and according to his good pleasure which

  200. he purposed in himself.

  201. So you know there's the predestination

  202. from the go sovereign God who says I

  203. will do as I please

  204. and in this universe he made it. You

  205. know, God doesn't need anyone's

  206. permission to send the Lord back and

  207. judge this wicked world. That's that's

  208. going to happen happen soon. That's what

  209. God that's what the word of God said.

  210. These are the decrees of God. And since

  211. God knows everything, he can he can

  212. decree something, you know, from

  213. eternity past. And then what happens is

  214. we obtain the inheritance there in verse

  215. 11. Being predestined, there's that word

  216. according to the purpose of him who

  217. works all things after the council of

  218. his own will.

  219. So predestination is according to the

  220. will of God. It's according to uh the

  221. pleasure of God. It's it's what God

  222. wants.

  223. And God predestinated the elect

  224. before the foundation

  225. of the world.

  226. And as well, God for ordained that

  227. everyone of the elect would walk in good

  228. works before the foundation of the

  229. world.

  230. So the having here you know in verse 9

  231. having made known God makes this known

  232. to us.

  233. So this is a revelation. This is not a

  234. IQ thing or you know well the you guys

  235. come along and you guys add so much to

  236. what the Bible says.

  237. No this predestined

  238. this predestination and election is not

  239. something we added to you know the word

  240. of God. Here it is from the beginning.

  241. God chose us.

  242. And uh

  243. as well remember what Jesus said in John

  244. 14. What did he say there? I just sum it

  245. up. He said, "I go to there's our word,

  246. prepare a place for you." So we've been

  247. predestined to be with Jesus. and he is

  248. predestined and in heaven now

  249. um building us a place. What a place

  250. that will be.

  251. So this Greek word predestined I mean

  252. here here it is in the book of

  253. Ephesians. I mean over and over we got

  254. it you know in the front and in the

  255. back.

  256. So you know we can't say it's not in the

  257. Bible. Here it is and it's according to

  258. God's will.

  259. No other explanation needed.

  260. You know, this is what God has chosen to

  261. do.

  262. So, you know, Paul says in Romans, the

  263. potter, don't argue with the potter

  264. clay.

  265. That's in that illustration is in the

  266. Old Testament as well. You know, don't

  267. you can't challenge God on this.

  268. It's his own will and he can do as he

  269. pleases.

  270. But it prepares us to worship God to

  271. know it's nothing we did. It's something

  272. he did. He's the author of salvation and

  273. the finisher of our faith and everything

  274. in between. That's what we're learning.

  275. But God as well. Um, you know, outside

  276. of the church and outside of the

  277. Gentiles, you think Gentiles are just

  278. going to naturally get saved.

  279. You know, that's not going to happen. We

  280. need the gospel. We need gospel

  281. preachers.

  282. And to get the word of God out to know,

  283. you know, that God loves us in his son.

  284. But God as well has

  285. predestined elect angels.

  286. We'll get into that when we look at

  287. angels as well. God, you know, his own

  288. nation, Israel.

  289. I mean, that's do we need any more proof

  290. that God can predestin God can choose

  291. and God can determine and God can say,

  292. you know, you you're not going to go

  293. against my will.

  294. So the things that God says are

  295. the word of God, the promises of God.

  296. And this is one of them as well.

  297. You know, Israel is going to inherit the

  298. earth.

  299. You know, it doesn't look real too

  300. probable right now, does it?

  301. But, you know, it's not God isn't

  302. working through Israel now. God is

  303. working through the church. us the

  304. Gentiles, you know, he says, "Well,

  305. working through the Jews." We've had a

  306. few of them here. And, you know, thank

  307. God he is working uh continually through

  308. the Jews. But, you know, I don't know

  309. what it is. 90% of the church is made up

  310. of Gentiles.

  311. And that's just what the Old Testament

  312. says. You know, God says, "I'm going to

  313. have mercy." It's like it's like Jonah

  314. and Nineveh. We get mad because God's

  315. having mercy on people.

  316. and you know provoked people and that's

  317. what has happened and what is going on

  318. with the Jews. God is trying to provoke

  319. them with the with the Gentile nations.

  320. I mean we didn't, you know, we're not

  321. smarter than the Jews. It's not an

  322. intellectual thing.

  323. It's God's choice

  324. and we're one of his choices if we're

  325. the elect.

  326. like Israel is, like the angels are,

  327. it's quite an honor to be one of God's

  328. chosen.

  329. And you know, we have throughout the New

  330. Testament, uh, you know, there's like

  331. seven things, you know, we say, well,

  332. you know, predestination's not in the

  333. Bible. Well, there's like seven things

  334. that that occur in the Bible as well

  335. that help amplify this great doctrine.

  336. We are chosen in the Lord.

  337. You know the elect. That's us. We're

  338. going to talk about election tonight. So

  339. come back, please. We're chosen to

  340. salvation.

  341. We were chosen before the foundation of

  342. the world. We were adopted here as

  343. children.

  344. We're not even servants.

  345. You know, I'd be nice to get into heaven

  346. and being a servant. I'll just be the

  347. janitor.

  348. No, no janitors in heaven because the

  349. work of Christ. We're all one and we're

  350. all one in him. And as well, this

  351. extends into our good works. You know,

  352. that's what God determined that we

  353. should do as well. And we are preparing

  354. for glory.

  355. You know, that's uh that's what we

  356. preach at at the funerals. This is not

  357. the end. This is the beginning. We're

  358. destined for glory. We're destined to

  359. this inheritance. We're destined as hes.

  360. We're destined as the elect.

  361. And that's what predestination means.

  362. And it's over and over and over in the

  363. Bible here.

  364. And and neither does. You know, some

  365. people misunderstand this doc.

  366. And you know, we we grow in these

  367. things. Um, and and we learn and we help

  368. others learn about these things. But,

  369. you know, God is not Santa Claus.

  370. You know, that's what a lot of people

  371. think God is. And that's what the devil

  372. accused Job.

  373. You know, God, the only reason that Job

  374. likes you, you're Santa Claus.

  375. You bless him. No wonder he follows you.

  376. God says, "Fine, take him away and I'll

  377. show you." The Lord gives, the Lord

  378. takes away. Blessed be the name of the

  379. Lord.

  380. But uh this whosoever will

  381. and these people that are chosen before

  382. the foundation of the world

  383. are

  384. God's chosen people. Turn over to second

  385. Timothy.

  386. We're we're dealing with predestination

  387. this morning and tonight we'll deal with

  388. the lection.

  389. You know, but you know, some people

  390. think, well, okay, God knows everything

  391. and he looked out into the future and

  392. everyone that was nice to him, he

  393. predestinated.

  394. That's foolishness.

  395. or any good work in us, any merit in us

  396. whatsoever. There is no merit in us.

  397. We're going to look at the depravity of

  398. man. We're going to look at the evil of

  399. man, the evil of sin. We're going to

  400. look at those things uh in a future

  401. date.

  402. But now, we're looking at what God did.

  403. And God did a great thing.

  404. He's prepared us for glory.

  405. And you know it's

  406. you know it's no more no less um than

  407. the elect

  408. are going to come. We'll talk about the

  409. calling. We'll talk about these things

  410. in future messages but this is just to

  411. show us you know who God is and what God

  412. has done.

  413. He's predestined what he's going to do

  414. with this planet.

  415. He's predestined what he's going to do,

  416. you know, with unbelievers.

  417. He's predestined what he's going to do

  418. with believers.

  419. So God sovereign will does these things,

  420. not what we think we can do or we will

  421. do or you know God makes God dependent

  422. on us, not us dependent on God.

  423. Proper theology is us depending on God.

  424. Salvation is of the Lord.

  425. So here in second Timothy, Paul says in

  426. verse 9,

  427. you know how how many times did Paul sit

  428. around, scratch his head and say, "I

  429. can't believe this. I'm murdering

  430. Christians and God chose me. I'm one of

  431. the elect.

  432. Not by works." So we can see it's not by

  433. works.

  434. uh it's not by you know being good or

  435. anything like it's not behavior related

  436. at all even our faith

  437. there's no merit in us

  438. and he says here who has saved us God

  439. did it we didn't save ourselves it's not

  440. a joint effort

  441. not 99% God and 1% us

  442. and he called us with the holy calling

  443. Well, if you remove any of these, then

  444. you know that you know no one would ever

  445. get saved.

  446. If God elected none, then no one would

  447. get saved.

  448. But those that God elects

  449. come to him

  450. and then we have this holy calling

  451. and not according to our works. Nothing

  452. to do with our works.

  453. It is all to do with God's grace and

  454. that's what he says which was given us

  455. in Christ Jesus when

  456. before the world began before Adam ever

  457. sin

  458. and God knew what was going to happen.

  459. We looked at that last week but is now

  460. manifest. That's what we're doing. We're

  461. seeing what God did.

  462. He chose us before the foundation of the

  463. world. He's predestined us to a holy

  464. calling, not anything to do with us. I

  465. mean, that's what Romans says. Remember

  466. the children not yet being born, not

  467. having done any good or bad,

  468. God elected.

  469. And it's because we're all bad. None of

  470. us can do any works. We're going to look

  471. at that in a future date,

  472. you know. But there there is not one

  473. merit in the elect,

  474. you know, at all. We all fall short of

  475. the glory of God.

  476. God is no respector of men. You know,

  477. you you can't fool God.

  478. You know, he chose his people Israel not

  479. because they were great, but because

  480. they were the least. And God elected us

  481. not because we're the great,

  482. but we're the least as well.

  483. And and uh Ephesians says in love, God

  484. did this,

  485. you know. So God didn't have to think

  486. about loving us, you know. He knew what

  487. Adam was going to do. He knew what we

  488. were going to do. He didn't have to

  489. think about loving us. He just instantly

  490. simultaneously loved us and

  491. predestinated us to be conformed to the

  492. image of his son. So in Christ is the

  493. love of God. In Christ is the grace of

  494. God. In Christ is the mercy of God

  495. uh for us to go on and to be holy like

  496. he wants us to be like his son. Like I

  497. said, we're we're going to heaven not as

  498. janitors but as sons of God.

  499. And because of the son of God, turn over

  500. to Romans nine.

  501. And this is what I just quoted

  502. over in Romans chapter nine.

  503. This wipe this verse just wipes out all

  504. merit in any of us. There aren't, you

  505. know, two groups of sinners, you know,

  506. those that God was favoring over another

  507. group. No, we're all dead,

  508. you know, and if God wouldn't have

  509. elected,

  510. no one would be called

  511. and justified in that great chain that

  512. we talk about. But here in Romans 9:1,

    Romans 9:1

  513. you know, it it was hard for the Jews to

  514. say, "Wait a minute, we're God's chosen.

  515. We're" and they hated Gentiles.

  516. What's going on?

  517. It's the will of God. It It's the

  518. purpose of God. It's the pleasure of God

  519. according to his will. He chose us

  520. Gentile,

  521. you know, and and you know, as the Jews

  522. looked at it, we we are worse off than

  523. them. We didn't, you know, we weren't

  524. keeping anything.

  525. And here,

  526. you know, so that removes all merit. You

  527. know, people aren't saved because

  528. they're Jews. They thought they were.

  529. They still think they are. That's in

  530. Romans, earlier in the Romans.

  531. But by the time Paul gets to the end of

  532. chapter 10, that's what he says about us

  533. Gentiles.

  534. You know, God's grafted us in. Whosoever

  535. will may come.

  536. This is the riches of his glory there in

  537. verse 23.

  538. on the vessels of mercy which he before

  539. prepared into glory. That's us. He

  540. elected us. He predestined us not just

  541. to be saved but to be uh justified and

  542. sanctified and glorified and with him

  543. someday.

  544. So this is just an incredible privilege.

  545. And then uh he says in verse 12, "The

  546. elder shall serve the younger.

  547. As it is written, Jacob

  548. have I loved and Esau have I hated."

  549. And what shall we say then? Is there

  550. unrighteousness with God? There's no

  551. merit in God's mercy. If there was merit

  552. in God's mercy, then we could charge God

  553. with something. But we can't charge God

  554. with anything. He's merciful to whom he

  555. wants to be merciful.

  556. There's just no conditions that exist to

  557. make God choose the elect over any any

  558. other sinner. There absolutely no merit

  559. in us.

  560. And you know this is the revelation of

  561. the word of God. This again, this is

  562. not, you know, an Athens Bible Church

  563. thing or, you know, you fundamentals,

  564. you Bible thumpers, whatever you want to

  565. call us, it's here

  566. and we must proclaim it. We must preach

  567. it. We must share it,

  568. you know, because it is just such an

  569. important part of the kingdom of God.

  570. No one deserves God's mercy. No,

  571. not one.

  572. Morning, Jax. Morning, Coupe. Nice hat,

  573. buddy.

  574. Charles Spurgeon said this. He said, "We

  575. are saved not because we deserve it, but

  576. because God is merciful, and mercy found

  577. a way where justice would have condemned

  578. us."

  579. So, this is all God's purpose. This is

  580. all for the glory of God.

  581. And this is all a revelation.

  582. So, you know, again, I mentioned we're

  583. going to look at man, look at our fall.

  584. And, you know, fallen man is not forced

  585. to sin against his will.

  586. You know, we talked about a message or

  587. two ago,

  588. Flip Wilson saying, "The devil made me

  589. do it."

  590. Well, you know, he he can influence you.

  591. He can tempt you, but you and I are

  592. responsible

  593. to God, not the devil. He'll answer to

  594. God. We have to answer for our own our

  595. own sins. And, you know, we that's our

  596. will is, you know, to sin

  597. and and to go on without God. And then,

  598. you know, people that don't get saved,

  599. you know, they just feast on sin like,

  600. you know, they can just turn it off any

  601. time.

  602. That's such a lie. Sin makes you a slave

  603. and you just sin more and more and more

  604. if you're not born again.

  605. And you know, we'll talk about those

  606. things when when we look at man. But you

  607. know,

  608. you sin is voluntary. You know what? You

  609. got a choice in front of you. You know,

  610. you're you decide what you're going to

  611. do.

  612. And God tempts no man. We looked at that

  613. in James. So he's don't blame God,

  614. you know, and and as we, you know, go on

  615. and sin, that's why the Bible's so

  616. important, you know, we don't even know

  617. what sin is. We don't even know what the

  618. law said.

  619. The law says don't steal.

  620. And we wouldn't know stealing was wrong

  621. without the Bible. We wouldn't know

  622. anything was wrong without the Bible.

  623. So, we have to go with what God says.

  624. That's why it's so important to read

  625. your Bible and be accustomed to the

  626. Bible so you can know when somebody is

  627. lying to you about something.

  628. But fallen man becomes a slave to sin.

  629. That's what happens. The woman at the

  630. well, Nicodemus, all these great

  631. examples in the book of John,

  632. you know, we can't turn it off. We can't

  633. go the other way. We can't turn over a

  634. new leaf. We need to be regenerated

  635. and and to receive the new birth.

  636. So that's the way God is dealing with

  637. our sin problem. Before we were saved

  638. and and after we're saved, God is

  639. dealing with our sin problem with his

  640. light and life. We're dead. We need

  641. life. We're blind. We need the light.

  642. and God comes along and gives it to us.

  643. And you know, we still decide whether

  644. we're going to follow God or not. Don't

  645. blame God if you don't follow him.

  646. You know, he's done everything

  647. needed. Nothing else needs to be done.

  648. That's what Peter says. See, these

  649. blessings that God has given us are so

  650. great. Everything is on us now as far as

  651. responsibility

  652. for what we do with the light and the

  653. life that God has given us. And it comes

  654. at b at the new birth and at

  655. regeneration. We're going to that's what

  656. Bible word predestination Bible word new

  657. birth word regeneration Bible Bible

  658. word.

  659. And what does this mean?

  660. Well, it means that, you know, it's all

  661. of God,

  662. even our good works after we're saved.

  663. And we also have the whosoever will may

  664. come. Now, this

  665. doctrine of predestination is not at the

  666. expense of the whosoever will.

  667. You know, we have that throughout the

  668. Bible and and the New Testament zeros in

  669. on it.

  670. But the whosoever will may come and no

  671. one is excluded

  672. from calling on God.

  673. Now, calling on God doesn't save us. But

  674. the Bible says this, "Call to me,

  675. Jeremiah."

  676. pastors in this very chapter. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 33:3

  677. 33:3,

  678. "Pall to me

  679. and I will answer you and I will tell

  680. you great and uncarchable things that

  681. you don't know." You know, I've had pe

  682. missionaries tell me they God sent them

  683. to a remote place and when they got

  684. there, there was somebody praying,

  685. "Lord, send me the light."

  686. Say, "Well, they're unsaved. God doesn't

  687. hear the unsaved prayer.

  688. I'm staying out of that argument. I'm

  689. telling you, God says, "Whosoever will

  690. may come."

  691. And God has told us to call

  692. upon him.

  693. And you know, that's what he tell he

  694. tells us to pray. I mean, we have the

  695. you know, we decide what we're going to

  696. do today. Do do I go to church? Do I go

  697. not go to church? How do I feel? you

  698. know, we still make our daily decisions

  699. based upon, you know, the light that God

  700. has given us, but we're still

  701. responsible for every step that we take.

  702. And as well, you know, God says to pray,

  703. you know, so don't wait until things are

  704. bad to start praying, you know, like I

  705. do. We we should be prayer warriors with

  706. God before anything happens.

  707. You say, "How can I out change the

  708. outcome of something by praying?" Oh,

  709. yeah. Yeah, we can. That's what God

  710. says. Call on me

  711. and come to me.

  712. And in Psalm 86:E5

  713. says, "You, Lord,

  714. are forgiving and good, abounding in

  715. love to all who call upon you.

  716. And so don't think you're too remote and

  717. too tiny and too, you know, too small to

  718. care uh for God to care about you.

  719. That's wrong.

  720. Come to the poor,

  721. you know. So God knows your condition.

  722. God was poor himself

  723. and his son.

  724. And the one that I like in Romans, turn

  725. over to chapter 10.

  726. I you just can't get any better theology

  727. than Romans.

  728. I don't know why people don't believe

  729. these things that are here.

  730. But here in Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  731. and verse 13,

  732. for if the elect

  733. Oh, didn't say that. It says, "Whosoever

  734. shall call upon the name of the Lord

  735. shall be saved."

  736. Paul amplifies what Jeremiah said. And

  737. the Bible says,

  738. you know, God says, you know, come to me

  739. and we'll reason. And you know, in

  740. Isaiah, though your sins be as scarlet,

  741. I'll make you clean.

  742. You know, God is no despiser or

  743. respector of men.

  744. So if you're one of the whosoever you're

  745. not saved yet, you can quickly become

  746. one of the elect by

  747. calling upon the name of the Lord. And

  748. here to be saved. And here, you know, it

  749. all goes together. Verse nine, if you

  750. will confess with your mouth

  751. and the Lord Jesus and believe in your

  752. heart that God raised him from the dead,

  753. you will be saved.

  754. So there's the confessing with a mouth.

  755. And this confessing is to God.

  756. You know, people get saved in church. I

  757. know that people get saved in the middle

  758. of the night. you know, they wake up or,

  759. you know, they're listening to somebody

  760. on a radio and they hear the gospel and

  761. they get saved.

  762. So, getting saved is doing business with

  763. God

  764. and believing God and believing on the

  765. name of the Lord, not the name of Athens

  766. Bible Church,

  767. but the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  768. And then Jesus says in John 6:37, go

    John 6:37

  769. there

  770. John.

  771. And Jesus said this as well

  772. John John 6:37.

    John 6:37

  773. What you know, can you combine the elect

  774. and the whosoever will?

  775. Well, listen to what Jesus said. He he

  776. does that very thing right here

  777. in verse 37. He says, "All

  778. 100%

  779. of the ones that God predestined

  780. will come."

  781. 100%.

  782. And how did Jesus get them?

  783. They were given to him

  784. by his father.

  785. and him that comes to me I will no wise

  786. cast out. So here's the whosoever will.

  787. Jesus says I won't cast you out ever.

  788. So come

  789. to him and and Jesus he says all all

  790. total acceptance

  791. you know here I'm not saying that this

  792. is easy belieism anything like that. I'm

  793. saying if you come to God on his terms

  794. which are through his son,

  795. this one that God chose us in before the

  796. foundation of the world. Jesus says, I

  797. will no eyes cast out.

  798. So John or excuse me, Paul comes along

  799. years later and writes Romans 8, there

  800. is therefore now no condemnation to them

  801. that are in Christ.

  802. So the question isn't am I a whosoever

  803. will or am I one of the elect. The

  804. question is am I in Christ.

  805. That's the only way is through h his

  806. work and this gift of salvation. Turn

  807. over to Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  808. Philippians

  809. and chapter 1,

  810. we are, and we're going to get to it

  811. when we talk about man, our depravity

  812. and our death. You know, we don't have

  813. life. You know, that's what Jesus says.

  814. You won't come to me that you might have

  815. life.

  816. That's what we get when we come to him.

  817. That's what regeneration is. That's what

  818. justification by faith is. That's what

  819. the new birth is. God gives us life and

  820. light

  821. that we so desperately need.

  822. And here in Philippians, and again,

  823. there aren't, you know, two groups of

  824. sinners, you know, okay, well, God likes

  825. you guys over in Athens, but he doesn't

  826. like people in, you know, another town

  827. somewhere else. There is no merit in us

  828. whatsoever.

  829. No one deserves the mercy of God. Not

  830. one

  831. except his son. And he he went to the

  832. cross and paid for our sin that God

  833. might be merciful to us through him.

  834. He's the way. He's the light. He's the

  835. truth. He He's all those things he says.

  836. And now here's Paul preaching this

  837. gospel in Philippians.

  838. He says in verse six,

  839. don't teach them election.

  840. Don't teach them predestination.

  841. No, Paul says, "Be confident."

  842. That's what this gives us is the

  843. confidence. Oh, God chose me before the

  844. foundation of the world.

  845. So, this gives us confidence to live.

  846. This gives us our insurance to live.

  847. This gives us our comfort to live. This

  848. gives us our confidence. And people say

  849. that, "Man, you're awful confident about

  850. this."

  851. Well, I'm confident in what God has done

  852. and in God's word, not myself. Paul

  853. says, I the flesh profits nothing still.

  854. There's nothing in my flesh that can

  855. please God. Romans 8.

  856. But what is here now is a new man. What

  857. is here now?

  858. Uh

  859. I've been regenerated through

  860. Christ. And I'm confident of this very

  861. thing.

  862. Paul singles it down. Oh, don't tell

  863. people this this Paul Paul does.

  864. He begun a good work in you. He will

  865. perform it. How can that be? How can we

  866. be responsible for God to God for every

  867. decision that we make yet God is going

  868. to work in us and perform

  869. making us holy

  870. like his son can't have it without this

  871. gift. It's not something your flesh can

  872. do or my flesh can do. Even as it is

  873. right for me to think this of you,

  874. because I have you in my heart, in so

  875. much as in my bonds, the defense and

  876. confirmation of the gospel, ye all are

  877. partakers of my grace. They benefit from

  878. Paul's grace. We benefit from each

  879. other's grace.

  880. But that all comes from God. This isn't

  881. something that we've dreamed up and

  882. we're doing. We're in the body of

  883. Christ, not in our flesh.

  884. We're still battle with our flesh. Paul

  885. says, "Oh wretched man that I am, who

  886. shall deliver me from the body of this

  887. death and death is going to do us a

  888. great thing and a great favor."

  889. And we don't need anything else. You

  890. know, we don't go to purgatory and get

  891. baptized and then we're ready for

  892. heaven.

  893. That's a lie.

  894. If you're born again, if you've been

  895. regenerated, if you're one of the

  896. whosoever will that has come,

  897. when you die and open up your eyes,

  898. Jesus is going to be there just like he

  899. promised.

  900. And we're going to pass into the

  901. presence of God through him. What an

  902. incredible thing he has done.

  903. So all of the whosoever wills, you know,

  904. they're elect as well.

  905. And you see the invitation to come. No

  906. one is turned away.

  907. Um, and then go to Romans chapter 8. And

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  908. we've turned to this verse so many

  909. times. Here we go again.

  910. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  911. BB Warfield called this the the golden

  912. chain of God.

  913. They're all tied together here.

  914. Morning Martha.

  915. And

  916. what did Paul tell us in Ephesians? It's

  917. God's purpose. It's God's choice.

  918. You know, God ordained. He purposed.

  919. All those great things he predestined

  920. and those that he predestined

  921. he calls. Now we're going to look at

  922. election tonight

  923. and we're going to look at the call

  924. maybe later on

  925. but you know the this is here is

  926. confirmation of the transformation

  927. here.

  928. So Paul says, "No one that God has saved

  929. will not be transformed

  930. into the image of his son." Not one.

  931. That doesn't mean we're not responsible.

  932. You know, that doesn't mean we just go

  933. live like the world. Paul said, "God

  934. forbid in Romans." Paul said, "God

  935. forbid to the to the Galatians

  936. and to the Corinthians." Paul said, "You

  937. make the grace of God of no effect. You

  938. You've made it void."

  939. You know, God knows how gracious he's

  940. been to every single person.

  941. You know, he's not in the dark on that

  942. at all.

  943. And to us who are saved that has God's

  944. mighty grace

  945. and good to us. We're the ones who

  946. should stand out in this old wicked

  947. world. Not because we're perfect and

  948. sinless, but because we have the grace

  949. and the mercy of God. We have been

  950. regenerated.

  951. And that's what Paul says in verse 24.

  952. For we are saved.

  953. God saved us.

  954. It turns out God saved us before the

  955. foundation of the world. And we're just

  956. now finding out about it. Maybe

  957. that's a hope.

  958. We're not saved by hope. We're saved by

  959. faith. But they're they're twins. You

  960. you can't have one without the other.

  961. Where there's great faith, there's great

  962. hope. Where there's great hope, there's

  963. great faith.

  964. And Paul deals with that here. And then

  965. he says, we know, even apostles needed

  966. to know this. Verse 28, all things work

  967. together for the good to them that love

  968. God. to them. Here's that word. Who are

  969. called according to his purpose.

  970. Oh, predestinations all over the Bible.

  971. Here we go again.

  972. For whom he did forno,

  973. those he predestinated.

  974. Even though he knew there was no merit

  975. in us,

  976. there can't be. Else it's not mercy.

  977. So the mercy of God is not merit-based

  978. that we might be that he might be the

  979. firstborn among many brethren. What

  980. Jesus did has

  981. he has started a whole new race of

  982. people.

  983. Remember what happened in the garden?

  984. God allowed sin to come along and and

  985. now here we are. We're going to we're

  986. going to reap

  987. the benefits of what Jesus has done for

  988. us sinners.

  989. Here it is. We're going to be uh we're

  990. predestined. We're called them. He

  991. called. Here's that golden chain

  992. that Warfield was talking about.

  993. Justified. Whom he justified, he

  994. glorified. You you just can't stop God

  995. when he predestines something.

  996. And what shall we say?

  997. If God before us, who can be against us?

  998. God, there's no merit in God's mercy.

  999. How you going to charge God with

  1000. anything here?

1001. You can't. We can't. He spared not his

1002. own son. He delivered him up for us all.

1003. Jesus died for every sinner.

1004. And whosoever will may come.

1005. And who's going to lay anything here?

1006. Paul says to the charge of God's elect.

1007. That's who we are. We are God's elect

1008. because he chose us, predestined us

1009. before the foundation of the world in

1010. his sovereignty. And as well he says,

1011. "Whosoever will may come, you know,

1012. become one of the elect,

1013. call upon the name of the Lord, do these

  1014. things."

1015. And you know, there's no merit in us,

  1016. not one.

1017. And you know, God is going to start a

1018. new race in heaven when we get there.

1019. There's old sinful Adam's race who has

  1020. become

1021. sons of God through the work of Christ.

1022. That's the way the book of Revelations

1023. starts out. No one. Who's going to open

1024. a title? No one can.

1025. You know the wisdom of God here. You

1026. can't charge God with anything

1027. at any point in time anywhere in the

1028. universe. God is without sin.

1029. So, you know, God chose Israel, not

  1030. Egypt.

  1031. God's chosen gentile nations

1032. as well. And he said before their birth,

  1033. before they did anything,

1034. that's what God says to Job.

1035. Oh, where were you creature

1036. when this creator did these things? Who

1037. can lay anything to the charge of God's

1038. elect? No one can. That's what Paul says

1039. here in verse 8. And there are many that

1040. I mentioned this. Let's go to it in 2

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1041. Corinthians chapter 6.

1042. When I'm gracious to you and you're

1043. gracious to me, you know, God knows

1044. that. It's not, you know, it's not

  1045. something he doesn't know,

1046. you know. So when we're gracious back to

1047. him and you know gracious to each other,

1048. God is gracious to us. This is not merit

  1049. in any means.

  1050. It's responsibility.

1051. And now we're the children of God. We

1052. got we know the sun. We have light and

  1053. life

1054. that God has given us as a free gift.

1055. But some people don't want it.

1056. And and Paul says here in 2 Corinthians

1057. 6, we then as workers together with him

1058. beseech you also that you receive not

1059. the grace of God in vain.

  1060. That's what people do.

1061. You know, God's blessed them from the

1062. time they were born till they die and

1063. they curse God at their death. It's not

1064. God's fault. It's their fault. And those

1065. of us who are saved,

1066. if it wasn't for God, we'd be with him

1067. and we'd be just like him.

1068. And he says here, God in a time accepted

1069. the day of salvation. God knows what day

1070. we got saved, what hour, what

  1071. circumstances.

1072. And I got to quit. You guys, I've told

1073. you before, I had I had all kinds of

1074. excuses not to get saved. I had a long

1075. list of them. And the day that I got

1076. saved, they were nowhere to be found.

1077. And my best friend, I said, "I'm going

1078. to go talk. He'll tell me not to do

1079. this. He'll talk me out of this." He

1080. couldn't talk me out of it. He said,

1081. "No, this is what you need to do." He

  1082. was an unsaved man.

1083. So come whosoever will uh to this

  1084. wonderful, loving, gracious, kind,

1085. merciful God who pours out on us not

1086. because we deserve anything but because

1087. of who he is. Father, we thank you this

1088. morning for these great things. These

1089. are deep subjects and we need to believe

1090. you and what you said, what your word

  1091. has said.

1092. There's no merit in any of us, Father.

1093. We all have sinned and come short of the

1094. glory of God. There's none that doeth

1095. good. Know not one, that's me included.

1096. So, thank you for your mercy. Thank you

1097. for this gift of salvation. Thank you

1098. that you predestinated me before the

1099. foundation of the world to be conformed

1100. into the image of your son. I'm going to

1101. be a part of this new race in heaven

1102. because of the work of your son. and we

1103. praise you today for these great gifts

1104. and we pray it in Jesus name. Amen.

1105. >> As we go from this place

  1106. you more

  1107. trusting you more.

1108. May the power of your love and the light

  1109. of your word shine

1110. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1111. this place.
