  1. Well, good morning. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Genesis 6. We're going to preach on Noah and the flood this morning.

  2. ! No, seriously. I want to start this morning with a question. What is God up to you in the world today?

  3. We might have a whole list of things that we wish God were up to.

  4. We wish that wars would end. We wish that poverty would be eradicated. We wish that disease would be cured.

  5. We wish that ungodliness would not run rampant. We wish that sex trafficking and sex crimes would be stopped.

  6. Many, many things that we long for, and these are all good desires that we would have.

  7. There are also things that we wonder about when we think about this. In the church, we wonder, will God return soon?

  8. And if He's not returning soon, what is He up to? What is His work doing?

  9. Well, I believe that these are questions that the early church was asking as well.

  10. As we begin our series in the Book of Acts, actually, this is the second week, so if you weren't here last week,

  11. we're preaching through the Book of Acts this fall, actually this year, we'll be looking through the story of God's work in building His church.

  12. If you didn't get to hear the sermon last week, I really encourage you, go to our website, go back and listen to it again,

  13. because it's a great introduction to the work.

  14. But we're going to preach on the second passage in the Book of Acts.

  15. In your pew Bibles, it's going to be page 855 or so.

  16. We're going to look at Acts 1, verses 12 through 26, and it's a little bit of an odd passage.

    Acts 1:12–26

  17. Interestingly, lots of sermon series just skip over this passage.

  18. When they want to preach through the whole Book of Acts, they just skip this one.

  19. But we believe that all of God's words are profitable for us, and so we don't want to set our own agenda by picking all the passages.

  20. We want to preach through God's word as it is written.

  21. And so we're going to preach through this passage and see what God has for us as we think about what is God up to in the world today.

  22. As we get there, we want to set the scene for what's going on in the narrative.

  23. This is after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  24. He appeared to many people over a period of 40 days, and then, as we saw in the first eight verses,

  25. He then ascended into heaven, disappeared from view, miraculously, supernaturally.

  26. He ascended into heaven, and the disciples were left with the instruction,

  27. Go back to Jerusalem and wait.

  28. Wait for what God has next.

  29. Now, can you imagine these men and women?

  30. They had believed in Jesus.

  31. They had left their old faith commitments, their old communities, and said,

  32. We will follow you.

  33. Many of them had left their livelihoods and their homes and even their families to follow Jesus.

  34. And now He's gone.

  35. What happens next?

  36. Well, we're going to pick up the story.

  37. We're going to read, starting in verse 12.

  38. And then we will consider together a few things we can learn about what God is up to.

  39. So, Acts chapter 1, verse 12.

    Acts 1:12

  40. Then they, that is the disciples, returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet,

  41. which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath-stage journey away.

  42. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying,

  43. Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,

  44. James, the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Judas, the son of James.

  45. All these were, all these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer together with the women and Mary,

  46. the mother of Jesus and his brothers.

  47. In those days, Peter stood up among the brothers in the company of persons, was in all about 120,

  48. and said,

  49. Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas,

  50. who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

  51. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in the ministry.

  52. Now, this man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle,

  53. and all his bowels gushed out.

  54. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  55. so that the field was called in their own language,

  56. a keldama, which is field of blood.

  57. For it is written in the book of Psalms,

  58. May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it,

  59. and let another take his office.

  60. So, one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

  61. beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us,

  62. one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.

  63. And they put forward to Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also called Justice, and Matthias.

  64. And they prayed and said,

  65. You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen

  66. to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.

  67. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven disciples.

  68. This is God's Word. Let's pray.

  69. Lord, thank you for your Word.

  70. Thank you for the instruction that you give us,

  71. and the way that you reveal yourself to us through it.

  72. Lord, be with us this morning.

  73. Lord, make our minds alert to understand your Word.

  74. Make our hearts soft to receive your Word.

  75. And may our hands be quick to respond in faithful obedience to it.

  76. Lord, we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  77. Amen.

  78. What is God up to?

  79. God is fulfilling His promises

  80. to create for Himself a people

  81. who will worship and serve Him forever.

  82. A renewed people.

  83. And what we see in this passage is the beginning of what we're going to see throughout the book of Acts,

  84. which is a picture of what this renewed people of God look like,

  85. which we now call the church.

  86. And the church called it the church back then too.

  87. But this renewed people,

  88. this is what God is up to in the world.

  89. He is making a new people to worship Him,

  90. to glorify Him,

  91. to proclaim Him,

  92. to serve Him in the world.

  93. There are four things that we can learn about

  94. this renewed people of God from this passage.

  95. So that's what we're going to explore this morning,

  96. four of them.

  97. The first one is,

  98. and as we see in the first couple of verses,

  99. God's renewed people

  100. fulfill God's sovereign plan.

  101. Okay?

  102. So, this renewed people is a fulfillment of God's plan.

  103. The disciples return to Jerusalem,

  104. both the apostles,

  105. that is the eleven that are named,

  106. and a lot of others,

  107. as you see there are 120 in verse 15 are mentioned.

  108. And they return back to Jerusalem

  109. in obedience to the command,

  110. go back and wait for what God is going to do next.

  111. Right?

  112. And then in verse 16,

  113. Peter gets up and he says,

  114. we need to replace Judas.

  115. Now, the first question that we should ask is,

  116. why?

  117. Why do we need to replace Judas?

  118. Well, the reason is

  119. because this renewed people of God

  120. is a fulfillment of a pattern

  121. that we see in the Old Testament.

  122. So, we're going to do this really quickly.

  123. Go all the way back to Genesis 12.

  124. God comes to a man named Abram

  125. and He makes a promise.

  126. Abraham, I'm going to make you

  127. the father of a great nation.

  128. Right?

  129. Even though he had no children.

  130. Father, I'm going to make you

  131. the father of a great nation

  132. and I'm going to bless you

  133. and through you,

  134. I'm going to bless the whole world.

  135. This was the beginning of a promise

  136. to make a people for himself.

  137. And Abraham miraculously had a son

  138. and Isaac had two sons

  139. and Jacob was the chosen line

  140. and Jacob had 12 sons.

  141. And Jacob's family was removed to Egypt

  142. because of a famine

  143. and lived there for 400 years

  144. and became a structure of 12 tribes.

  145. 12 tribes descended from those 12 sons.

  146. Not perfectly.

  147. We're not going to get into the details of that.

  148. But this structure of 12 tribes,

  149. this picture of completeness,

  150. this is the whole people of God.

  151. And when God miraculously saved them

  152. from slavery in Egypt

  153. and brought them out,

  154. in Exodus 19,

  155. he says,

  156. I will make you my people

  157. and I will be your God

  158. if you keep my commandment.

  159. And then he leads this nation now,

  160. the nation of Israel,

  161. out of Egypt

  162. and towards the promised land.

  163. Now, the whole Old Testament

  164. is now a complicated story

  165. of the people of God

  166. failing to be the people of God

  167. over and over again,

  168. God continuing to be faithful

  169. to his promise

  170. over and over again.

  171. But when we see in the history,

  172. the end of it was

  173. the unfaithfulness became so great

  174. that God judged the people of God

  175. by sending them into exile.

  176. And the 12 tribes

  177. who had taken up residence

  178. in the promised land

  179. that God had given them

  180. were removed from that land

  181. and they never returned

  182. and never were reconstituted.

  183. And when you come to the time of Jesus,

  184. the remnant of the people of God,

  185. the God of Israel,

  186. had returned to Jerusalem

  187. but they saw,

  188. they're wondering too,

  189. God, what are you up to?

  190. What God is doing

  191. is creating a renewed people

  192. for himself.

  193. The 12 disciples of Jesus

  194. became the 12 apostles

  195. who are the foundation of the church.

  196. And this is the pattern

  197. where God is saying,

  198. this is the fulfillment

  199. fulfillment of what I have been up to

  200. from the very beginning.

  201. Now, we want to be careful on this

  202. because Tyler mentioned in his prayer,

  203. but I'll say it again.

  204. The apostles,

  205. the original apostles,

  206. the 12,

  207. were a unique part in history.

  208. Right?

  209. There are no ongoing apostles

  210. with the same role

  211. and the same authority.

  212. Why?

  213. Because they were literally

  214. eyewitnesses of Jesus' resurrection.

  215. And we can't replace them.

  216. But we also see that in Scripture

  217. that when James the apostle

  218. dies in chapter 12,

  219. they don't replace him then.

  220. So this is the hinge point

  221. of the changing

  222. from the Old Testament people of God

  223. to the New Testament people of God.

  224. And there's this sense of fulfillment

  225. in a renewed people of God

  226. based on now something different.

  227. Not the Old Testament promise

  228. to Abraham or Carl Moses,

  229. but those things are fulfilled

  230. in the person of Christ.

  231. And this new people of God

  232. is based on the resurrected Christ

  233. and his work of redemption for us.

  234. So this is the big picture.

  235. I want to make one more note

  236. before we go on.

  237. Luke is really careful to say

  238. and notice that these,

  239. that this new people of God

  240. led by the 12 apostles

  241. included both men and women.

  242. Now we might think today,

  243. duh, of course,

  244. that must be true.

  245. But in that cultural patriarchal time,

  246. that would have been groundbreaking.

  247. That would have been,

  248. for it to be explicit,

  249. the women were a part of this

  250. from the very beginning.

  251. Because this is a part

  252. of the renewed people of God

  253. in a sense where God

  254. was making sure

  255. that he had the doors open wide

  256. for this people to be

  257. for all peoples everywhere,

  258. men and women

  259. from every tribe

  260. and tongue and nation.

  261. There's so much more to say

  262. about that,

  263. but we'll pick it up

  264. as we go along

  265. because it's going to be

  266. a part of the rest

  267. of the book of Acts.

  268. This is a beautiful thing.

  269. This is what God is doing,

  270. creating the church

  271. as this unique place

  272. where his people

  273. are displaying his glory

  274. in fulfillment

  275. of these Old Testament prophets.

  276. So I want to end this point

  277. by just reading

  278. from Ephesians chapter 3

    Ephesians 3:7–12

  279. verses 7 through 12

  280. so you can hear

  281. how the Apostle Paul

  282. talks about this new people of God.

  283. He says this,

  284. of this gospel

  285. I was made a minister

  286. according to the gift

  287. of God's grace

  288. which was given to me

  289. by the working of his power.

  290. To me, though I am

  291. the very least

  292. of all these saints,

  293. this grace was given

  294. to preach to the Gentiles

  295. the unsearchable riches of Christ

  296. and to bring to light

  297. for everyone

  298. what is the plan

  299. of the mystery

  300. hidden for ages in God

  301. who created all things.

  302. Here's the key part.

  303. So that through the church

  304. the manifold wisdom of God

  305. might now be made known

  306. to the rulers and authorities

  307. in the heavenly places.

  308. This was according

  309. to the eternal purpose

  310. that he had realized

  311. in Christ Jesus our Lord

  312. in whom we have boldness

  313. and access with confidence

  314. through our faith in him.

  315. God said this church

  316. from now on

  317. is the place

  318. where I am displaying

  319. my glory in the world.

  320. And the church

  321. hasn't done that perfectly

  322. by far.

  323. But that is still

  324. God's plan A.

  325. Right?

  326. The gathered people of God

  327. as we worship here

  328. this morning

  329. we are a part

  330. of fulfilling this plan

  331. that God has given

  332. to his people.

  333. Not only so that

  334. God would be worshipped

  335. but also so that

  336. he would be made known.

  337. So we proclaim him.

  338. we preach

  339. we share

  340. we live lives

  341. that invite others

  342. to come

  343. and see

  344. who this Jesus is

  345. and what he's done.

  346. This is God's plan A

  347. for the world.

  348. So if you're wondering

  349. today

  350. what's God's plan

  351. for my life?

  352. Well here's one of

  353. God's plans for your life.

  354. He wants you

  355. to be a part of his church.

  356. He wants you to find

  357. your place of service

  358. and worship

  359. in it.

  360. Okay.

  361. Second thing we see

  362. not only is this

  363. God's people

  364. fulfillment

  365. but we also see

  366. that this renewed people

  367. are centered

  368. on God himself.

  369. I just want to pick up

  370. on verse 14

  371. for a second

  372. where what we see

  373. is that

  374. as the people

  375. gathered together

  376. it says two things

  377. about them.

  378. They were with one accord

  379. devoting themselves

  380. to prayer.

  381. Right?

  382. This was not

  383. an ultimate frisbee club

  384. where they came together

  385. because they like to do

  386. the same kind of activity.

  387. Right?

  388. God had gathered them

  389. around himself

  390. and he is in the center.

  391. And so

  392. being of one accord

  393. with people

  394. remember the disciples

  395. weren't all from

  396. the same place.

  397. Matthew was a tax collector.

  398. Peter was a fisherman.

  399. Many of them

  400. were from Galilee

  401. but not all of them.

  402. And God was bringing

  403. them together

  404. and calling them

  405. into a unity.

  406. And again

  407. we'll see this theme

  408. play out

  409. in the book of Acts

  410. but calling them

  411. together

  412. for only one reason

  413. because they followed

  414. Jesus

  415. together.

  416. And friends

  417. I just have to say

  418. one of the things

  419. I love about this church

  420. is that I feel like

  421. we taste that

  422. at least a little bit

  423. because New Haven

  424. is a very diverse city

  425. and when you look

  426. at who comes here

  427. on Sunday morning

  428. like look around.

  429. Do we have things

  430. in common?

  431. Do we cross paths

  432. in everyday life?

  433. Probably not.

  434. Not that much.

  435. But we gather

  436. because of Jesus

  437. and we're so glad

  438. that we have

  439. this kind of community.

  440. And here's my challenge

  441. to you this morning.

  442. How do you want to

  443. how can you be a part

  444. of this church?

  445. Well

  446. one

  447. you can stay

  448. for the potluck afterwards.

  449. Two

  450. you can sit with people

  451. that you don't know

  452. you can sit with your friend

  453. and other people

  454. you don't know

  455. but sit with people

  456. you don't know

  457. and ask them

  458. about their life.

  459. Ask them about

  460. their faith journey.

  461. Ask them about

  462. how God has worked

  463. in their lives.

  464. Spend time this morning

  465. and in the weeks to come

  466. as you have time

  467. in fellowship hour

  468. or however you interact

  469. in small groups

  470. or whatever

  471. find out about

  472. the other people in God

  473. and become in one accord

  474. over the shared faith

  475. in Jesus

  476. that gathers us

  477. as a church.

  478. So that's my encouragement

  479. with you about that.

  480. Not only were they

  481. in one accord

  482. but they were devoted

  483. to prayer.

  484. They seek

  485. they were seeking

  486. for the promised

  487. Holy Spirit to come.

  488. You see at the end

  489. of this passage

  490. they were seeking

  491. God to lead them

  492. in guidance

  493. about who they would

  494. choose to be

  495. this new apostle.

  496. They lived with a picture

  497. of a vibrant

  498. relationship

  499. with a living God

  500. who heard their prayers

  501. and who responded

  502. to them.

  503. Friends, we live

  504. in a world

  505. where we just

  506. so desperately

  507. want to be

  508. self-dependent.

  509. We hate

  510. depending on other people

  511. and we don't really

  512. even like

  513. depending on God.

  514. But the picture

  515. of the people

  516. of God here

  517. is a people

  518. who have embraced

  519. the fact that

  520. of course

  521. we're dependent

  522. on God.

  523. This is what

  524. the gospel tells us

  525. from the very beginning

  526. because we need

  527. Jesus to save us

  528. from sin

  529. that we can't

  530. save ourselves

  531. from.

  532. And if that's

  533. the foundation

  534. of how we know

  535. God,

  536. let's continue

  537. in that.

  538. Let's continue

  539. to be dependent

  540. on God.

  541. And as we depend

  542. on God,

  543. let us also bring

  544. others,

  545. the people of God

  546. into our lives

  547. trusting and believing

  548. that God will use

  549. them

  550. to help us grow

  551. in faith

  552. together.

  553. If you need

  554. help in your

  555. prayer life,

  556. there are lots

  557. of good books

  558. out there,

  559. but I'll just say

  560. one.

  561. Paul Miller's

  562. book,

  563. A Praying Life,

  564. is a wonderful

  565. book.

  566. It's very real,

  567. it's practical,

  568. it will help

  569. you develop

  570. a plan

  571. so that you

  572. can be purposeful

  573. to create

  574. a discipline

  575. of prayer

  576. because the

  577. discipline

  578. of prayer

  579. will help

  580. shape your

  581. heart

  582. in the

  583. spontaneousness

  584. of a real

  585. prayer relationship

  586. with God.

  587. The other thing

  588. I'll say

  589. is in two weeks

  590. there's a

  591. women's conference.

  592. Do you know

  593. what the topic

  594. is going to be?

  595. Prayer.

  596. What a great

  597. thing.

  598. If you're a

  599. woman here,

  600. please sign up

  601. and go.

  602. We'd love for you

  603. to join there.

  604. And finally,

  605. if you're wondering

  606. what do I pray,

  607. well,

  608. I'm going to read

  609. Paul's prayer

  610. from the book

  611. of Ephesians

  612. for you

  613. just as an

  614. example of how

  615. you can pray

  616. for yourself

  617. and for others.

  618. Paul says this

  619. in Ephesians 1

    Ephesians 1:16–23

  620. verse 16

  621. through 23.

  622. I do not

  623. cease to give

  624. thanks for you

  625. remembering you

  626. in my prayers

  627. that the God

  628. of our Lord

  629. Jesus Christ,

  630. the Father of

  631. glory,

  632. may give you

  633. the spirit

  634. of wisdom

  635. and of revelation

  636. in the knowledge

  637. of him.

  638. Having the eyes

  639. of your heart

  640. enlightened

  641. that you may

  642. know what

  643. is the hope

  644. to which he

  645. has called you,

  646. what are the

  647. riches of his

  648. glorious inheritance

  649. in the saints,

  650. and what is the

  651. immeasurable greatness

  652. of his power

  653. towards us

  654. who believe

  655. according to

  656. the working

  657. of his great

  658. might that he

  659. worked in Christ

  660. when he raised

  661. him from the dead

  662. and seated him

  663. in his right hand

  664. in the heavenly

  665. places far above

  666. all rule and

  667. authority and power

  668. and dominion

  669. and above every

  670. name that is named

  671. not only in this

  672. age but also

  673. in the one to come

  674. and he put all

  675. things under his

  676. feet and gave him

  677. his head over

  678. all things to the

  679. church which is

  680. his body,

  681. the fullness of

  682. him who fills

  683. all in all.

  684. Friends,

  685. pray this that

  686. you may know

  687. the hope

  688. and the riches

  689. of the inheritance

  690. and the power

  691. of God at work

  692. in you that you

  693. may know Christ

  694. in all of his

  695. exalted glory.

  696. Okay,

  697. so what have we

  698. seen so far?

  699. God's people are

  700. fulfillment of his

  701. promises.

  702. God's people are

  703. centered on Christ.

  704. We move through

  705. the passage in

  706. verses 16 through

  707. 20, we see that

  708. God's people are

  709. preserved despite

  710. human sin by God.

  711. God's people are

  712. right?

  713. Look with me again

  714. in verses 16

  715. through 20.

  716. Peter stands up

  717. and he says,

  718. hey, we need to

  719. fulfill, we need to

  720. fill this role that

  721. Judas has abdicated,

  722. right?

  723. He had this role as

  724. an apostle.

  725. He was deeply

  726. involved with us,

  727. right?

  728. He was involved in

  729. our ministry.

  730. He was counted as

  731. our number.

  732. Remember, thinking

  733. back into the

  734. gospels, he was

  735. called by Jesus.

  736. Jesus knew who he

  737. was.

  738. He called him in.

  739. He walked with

  740. him.

  741. He discipled him.

  742. He entrusted

  743. things to him.

  744. Judas was fully

  745. engaged as a

  746. disciple, as a

  747. follower of Christ.

  748. And with his

  749. betrayal, one of the

  750. questions that the

  751. early church had to

  752. ask was, God, can

  753. we trust one

  754. another?

  755. Can we trust you to

  756. do this?

  757. Right?

  758. Because it was a

  759. crisis that one of

  760. Jesus' 12 disciples

  761. had betrayed him and

  762. had led the

  763. authorities so that

  764. they could arrest

  765. him and ultimately

  766. crucify him.

  767. So this is one of

  768. the questions.

  769. Peter's saying, hey,

  770. we need to replace

  771. him.

  772. And then do you

  773. notice in verses

  774. 18 and 19, there's

  775. a parenthesis?

  776. This is because it

  777. seems very clear this

  778. was not a part of

  779. Peter's sermon.

  780. Luke, the author of

  781. the Acts, is

  782. interjecting, oh, by

  783. the way, do you

  784. know what happened

  785. to Judas?

  786. In case you're

  787. wondering, because

  788. everyone in

  789. Jerusalem knows

  790. this, he died.

  791. Right?

  792. Now, there are two

  793. different accounts.

  794. There's one in

  795. Matthew 27 and

  796. there's one here.

  797. They emphasize

  798. different details.

  799. I don't think

  800. they're contradictory.

  801. We can get into

  802. that another time if

  803. you want to ask me

  804. about it.

  805. But they emphasize

  806. different details.

  807. But it's very clear

  808. that the end of it

  809. is that his acts

  810. of wickedness led

  811. to his destruction.

  812. Matthew tells us

  813. that he hanged

  814. himself.

  815. Luke here describes

  816. that after hanging

  817. himself, his body

  818. hung there for so

  819. long that it

  820. decomposed and fell

  821. apart.

  822. And that the place

  823. where he died

  824. was an accursed

  825. place because they

  826. knew that this was

  827. a place where

  828. condemnation and

  829. judgment, a just

  830. result for Judas'

  831. betrayal, had

  832. happened.

  833. Peter goes on.

  834. In verse 20, he

  835. says, okay, so

  836. that's what

  837. happened to Judas.

  838. But now, Peter

  839. says, we must

  840. fulfill what God

  841. knew was going to

  842. happen anyway,

  843. right?

  844. Because in verse

  845. 20, he ends up

  846. quoting two psalms.

  847. And they're psalms

  848. from the Old

  849. Testament.

  850. They're psalms of

  851. David.

  852. And they're psalms

  853. David crying out

  854. to the Lord about

  855. his enemies, the

  856. people who stood

  857. up against the

  858. anointed king of

  859. Israel.

  860. And he's praying

  861. for God's work,

  862. right?

  863. And the first

  864. one is that

  865. this man, that the

  866. enemy's camp would

  867. be made desolate and

  868. no one would live

  869. there, right?

  870. And then the second

  871. one is that he would

  872. be removed and

  873. replaced.

  874. Christ, okay?

  875. Now, I could have

  876. preached a whole

  877. sermon on the use of

  878. the Old Testament

  879. and the New.

  880. I'm not going to do

  881. that today.

  882. We'll talk about that

  883. a lot throughout the

  884. book of Acts.

  885. But for here, what I

  886. want you to see is

  887. that Peter's saying

  888. God knew that Judas

  889. was going to do what

  890. he was going to do.

  891. Jesus knew that

  892. God was going to,

  893. that Judas was going

  894. to do what Judas

  895. did.

  896. And God

  897. sovereignly

  898. oversaw

  899. the work of

  900. redemption despite

  901. the human sinfulness

  902. that happened,

  903. right?

  904. So rather than

  905. fearing that God

  906. would keep his

  907. promises, Paul

  908. reminds his people

  909. God knew that this

  910. was going to happen

  911. from the very start.

  912. Jesus promised

  913. that God, that he

  914. would build his

  915. church and the

  916. gates of hell would

  917. not stand against

  918. it.

  919. No human sin can

  920. thwart the work of

  921. God.

  922. Now look, as a

  923. church, this never

  924. excuses our human

  925. sinfulness.

  926. We never say, oh,

  927. well, it's okay

  928. because God's

  929. sovereign so it

  930. doesn't matter.

  931. I can sin all I

  932. want.

  933. That is, if you're

  934. thinking that way,

  935. you come see me

  936. afterwards.

  937. We'll talk about it.

  938. But that is so far

  939. from the biblical

  940. picture.

  941. But what it is

  942. saying is that

  943. despite the reality

  944. of human sin,

  945. God is at work

  946. accomplishing his

  947. work of redemption

  948. to redeem a people

  949. for himself.

  950. And so, you'll see

  951. that this is exactly

  952. what Peter says

  953. when he preaches

  954. the gospel in

  955. Pentecost in the

  956. next chapter of

  957. Acts.

  958. So in Acts 2,

  959. 22 through 24,

  960. Peter will say

  961. this,

  962. Men of Israel,

  963. hear these words.

  964. Jesus of Nazareth,

  965. a man attested

  966. to you by God

  967. with mighty works

  968. and wonders and

  969. signs that God

  970. did through him

  971. in your midst.

  972. As you yourselves

  973. know, this Jesus

  974. delivered up according

  975. to the definite plan

  976. and foreknowledge of

  977. God, you crucified

  978. and killed by the

  979. hands of lawless men.

  980. Do you see that?

  981. Together, God

  982. ordained it and

  983. sovereignly ruled

  984. over it at the same

  985. time that godless

  986. men, lawless men,

  987. did the most unjust

  988. thing that has ever

  989. happened in the

  990. world, the crucifixion

  991. of Jesus Christ.

  992. So this is a part

  993. of what God is doing

  994. through his people,

  995. is accomplishing his

  996. plan even through

  997. human sin.

  998. And friend, again,

  999. isn't this true

  1000. because of the gospel

  1001. that we believe in?

  1002. Right?

  1003. That Jesus

  1004. Christ was

  1005. wronged in his

  1006. accusation, in his

  1007. judgment, in his

  1008. crucifixion.

  1009. It was all human

  1010. sin.

  1011. And yet it was

  1012. exactly God's

  1013. plan that he would

  1014. suffer unjustly so

1015. that he might be our

  1016. redeemer.

  1017. Because we deserve to

  1018. suffer justly.

  1019. And Jesus took our

  1020. place.

1021. And so if we have a

  1022. problem with God

  1023. wrestling with, as we

  1024. wrestle with, like, how

1025. can God, who is just,

  1026. work in an unjust

  1027. world, how does he

  1028. work this out?

  1029. Friends, look to the

  1030. cross where justice and

  1031. mercy meet.

  1032. And wrestle with the

1033. problem of evil based on

  1034. that perspective.

1035. And I'd love to talk to

  1036. you more about it.

  1037. Okay.

  1038. Fourth thing.

  1039. We've seen God

  1040. fulfill this promise.

  1041. We've seen God's people

  1042. centered on him.

  1043. We've seen God

  1044. preserving his people, his

  1045. church, despite human

  1046. sinfulness.

  1047. And finally, God's

1048. people are called to be

  1049. witnesses to the

  1050. resurrected Jesus.

1051. This is what we see in

  1052. verses 21 through 26.

1053. We finally get to the

  1054. action point.

  1055. Peter's preached a

  1056. sermon saying, hey, we

1057. have to do this, and

1058. then how are we going to

  1059. do this?

  1060. Well, what are some

  1061. criteria?

1062. They have to have seen

  1063. and been with Jesus.

1064. They had to have been

  1065. with Jesus from the

1066. start so they knew who

1067. he was, so they'd heard

  1068. his teaching and could

  1069. represent it again.

1070. They had to be those who

  1071. witnessed his

  1072. resurrection or witnessed

  1073. the resurrection,

  1074. resurrected Jesus, so

  1075. that they could testify,

1076. as we read earlier in

1077. 1 John, what we have

1078. seen with our eyes, what

1079. we have heard, what we

  1080. have touched, we know

  1081. this is real, right?

1082. So we have to replace

  1083. someone because these

  1084. apostles were going to

1085. be the foundation of the

  1086. new church, right?

  1087. They had to represent

  1088. Jesus in his teaching.

1089. They had to speak about

1090. his life and death and

  1091. resurrection because

  1092. their teaching became the

  1093. core of the church.

1094. And it was then laid out

1095. in the scriptures for us

1096. so that the New Testament

1097. account that we have is

  1098. based on eyewitness accounts

1099. of those who had seen

  1100. Jesus, right?

1101. And this is the ongoing

1102. witness then of the church,

  1103. right?

  1104. I haven't, I didn't see

  1105. Jesus physically raised

1106. from the dead, but I can

  1107. proclaim this because this

  1108. is a trustworthy witness.

  1109. And that's what the

  1110. apostles were doing.

  1111. And that's why it's so

  1112. important to have replaced

  1113. someone like this.

1114. And so, as, and again,

  1115. we're setting up, chapter

1116. two is really exciting in

  1117. Acts.

  1118. They're great.

  1119. God does amazing things,

  1120. right?

1121. So this is the setup.

1122. The people are being set up

1123. in place to receive what God

1124. has next for them, right?

1125. So they sought God in prayer.

1126. God, which one are you going

  1127. to choose?

1128. Now, they cast lots, right?

1129. And this is a fascinating thing,

1130. but do you notice how they

  1131. talked about it?

1132. Casting lots was not like,

1133. oh, this is a game of chance.

  1134. I wonder which guy's going to

  1135. get picked.

1136. No, because they saw that God

1137. was in the middle of it from

  1138. the very beginning.

1139. God, who have you chosen?

1140. Who have you chosen and

  1141. selected, right?

1142. They considered men who met

1143. the criteria, and then they

  1144. cast lots.

  1145. And casting lots literally

1146. is probably like a bunch of

1147. marked stones in a bag, and

1148. they reached in and pulled

  1149. one out.

1150. You know, that's probably as

  1151. simple as it looked.

1152. But they believed that God

  1153. was sovereignly active in

1154. that, and that he had

  1155. already prepared someone, and

1156. that Matthias was the one

  1157. who was picked, right?

1158. And so, this is how God

1159. works for them to fulfill the

1160. twelve again, so that they

1161. can play their apostolic role.

1162. And you see in verse 25, it

  1163. repeats this, right?

1164. To take the place in this

  1165. ministry and apostleship from

  1166. which Judas turned aside.

1167. This is the role that the

  1168. apostles had.

1169. The ministry, that is, they

1170. were going to serve God and

1171. serve his people by teaching

  1172. and proclaiming and bearing

1173. witness to the people of God.

1174. And they were apostles, meaning

  1175. they were sent ones.

1176. They had a particular role and

1177. a particular job that then

1178. become a pattern for the

1179. church that follows them to

  1180. continue in.

1181. That the church is called to be

1182. those who serve one another,

1183. serve God, and serve the world.

1184. We are meant to be sent into

1185. the world as followers of Jesus

  1186. to do what?

  1187. To proclaim the resurrected

  1188. Jesus.

1189. This is what the church is

1190. meant to do, bearing witness to

1191. the life-saving power of the

  1192. gospel.

1193. So, friends, let me close with

1194. the words of Peter as he wraps

1195. up some of these things and puts

1196. it in a different language in 1

  1197. Peter 2, 9 and 10.

  1198. He says this,

1199. But you are a chosen race, a

1200. royal priesthood, a holy nation,

1201. a people for his own possession.

  1202. Why?

1203. So that you may proclaim the

1204. excellencies of him who called

1205. you out of darkness into his

  1206. marvelous light.

1207. Once you were not a people, but

1208. now you are God's people.

1209. Once you had not received

1210. mercy, but now you have

  1211. received mercy.

1212. Friends, what is God doing in

  1213. the world?

  1214. He's building his church.

1215. What is the church called to

  1216. do?

1217. To declare the excellencies of

1218. him who called us out of

  1219. darkness into light.

1220. Not because we are great,

1221. because we are nothing, but

1222. because he is great, because

1223. he is everything, and he has

  1224. done everything in the

1225. resurrected Christ for us to

1226. know him and to be his people

1227. and to represent him until he

  1228. returns.

  1229. Let's pray together.

1230. Lord, we thank you for your

1235. that it might become our plan for

  1236. our lives.

1237. By your Holy Spirit, Lord, fill us.

1238. Lord, if there are those here this

1239. morning who are wondering about

1240. the resurrection of Christ, I

1241. pray that you would help them,

1242. help them to become convinced

1243. and certain that because you

1244. were raised from the dead, Lord,

1245. all of your redemptive work is

1246. real and is for us.

1247. And, Lord, that you would show us

1248. your great love so that we may

1249. come to know that love in faith in

  1250. you.

1251. Lord, be with us, we pray.
