  1. Ezra Ezra one in the first year of Cyrus, King

  2. of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the

  3. mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled.

  4. The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus.

  5. King of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout

  6. all his kingdom, and also put it in writing.

  7. Thus says Cyrus King of Persia, the Lord, the God

  8. of Heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth,

  9. and he has charged me to build him a house

  10. at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you

  11. of all his people, may his God be with him,

  12. and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah,

  13. and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God of Israel.

  14. He is the God who is in Jerusalem. And let

  15. each survivor in whatever place he sojourns, be assisted by

  16. the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods,

  17. and with beasts. Besides free will offerings for the House

  18. of God that is in Jerusalem.

  19. Then rose up the heads of the Father's houses of Judah,

  20. and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, everyone whose

  21. spirit God had stirred to go up to rebuild the

  22. house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem, and all

  23. who were about them aided them with vessels of silver,

  24. with gold, with goods, with beasts, and with costly wares.

  25. Besides all that was freely offered. Cyrus the King also

  26. brought out the vessels of the House of the Lord

  27. that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in

  28. the house of his gods. Cyrus, king of Persia, brought

  29. these out in the charge of Mithradath, the treasurer, who

  30. counted them out to Sheshbazar, the Prince of Judah. And

  31. this was the number of them, thirty basins of gold,

  32. one thousand basins of silver, twenty nine censors, thirty bowls

  33. of gold, four hundred ten bowls of silver, and one

  34. thousand other vessels. All the vessels of gold and of

  35. silver were five thousand, four hundred. All these did Shecheesbazar

  36. bring up when the exiles were brought up from Babylonia

  37. to Jerusalem.

  104. All the temple servants and the sons of Solomon's servants

  105. were three hundred ninety two. The following were those who

  106. came up from Telmila, Telharsha, kirib Adam, and Immer, though

  107. they could not prove their father's houses or their descent,

  108. whether they belonged to Israel. The sons of Deleah, the

  109. sons of Tobiah, and the sons of Nakota six hundred

  110. fifty two. Also of the sons of the priests, the

  111. sons of Hebea, the sons of Hakkas, the sons of Barzilai,

  112. who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzilai

  113. the Gilead Dight, and was called by their name. These

  114. sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but

  115. they were not found there, and so they were excluded

  116. from the priesthood as unclean. The governor told them that

  117. they were not to partake of the most Holy food

  118. until there should be a priest to.

  119. Consult Urim and Thummim.

  120. The whole assembly together was forty two thousand, three hundred

  121. sixty besides their male and female servants, of whom there

  122. were seven thousand, three hundred thirty seven, and they had

  123. two hundred male and female singers. Their horses were seven

  124. hundred thirty six, their mules were two hundred forty five,

  125. their camels were four hundred thirty five, and their donkeys

  126. were six thousand, seven hundred twenty. Some of the heads

  127. of families, when they came to the House of the Lord,

  128. that is in Jerusalem, made free will offerings for the

  129. House of God to erect it on its site according

  130. to their ability.

  131. They gave to the Treasury of.

  132. The Work sixty one thousand derrecks of gold, five thousand

  133. minas of silver, and one hundred priests garments. Now the priests,

  134. the levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers,

  135. and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all

  136. the rest of Israel in their towns. Ezra three. When

  137. the seventh month came and the children of Israel were

  138. in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem.

  139. Then arose Jeshua the son of Josephek with his fellow priests,

  140. and Zerobable the son of Schieltel with his kinsmen. And

  141. they built the Altar of the God of Israel to

  142. offer burnt offerings on it. As it is written in

  143. the law Law of Moses, the man of God. They

  144. set the altar in its place, for fear was on

  145. them because of the peoples of the lands, and they

  146. offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings

  147. morning and evening. And they kept the feast of Booths

  148. as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings

  149. by number according to the rule, as each day required,

  150. and after that the regular burnt offerings, the offerings at

  151. the new moon, and at all the appointed feasts of

  152. the Lord, and the offerings of everyone who made a

  153. free will offering to the Lord. From the first day

  154. of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings

  155. to the Lord. But the foundation of the Temple of

  156. the Lord was not yet laid. So they gave money

  157. to the Masons and the carpenters, and food, drink and

  158. oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians to bring cedar

  159. trees from Lebanon to the sea to Joppa, according to

  160. the grant that they had from Cyrus, king of Persia.

  161. Now in the second year after their coming to the

  162. House of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zorobabo,

  163. the son of Shiltl and Jeshua the son of Jozdac

  164. made a beginning together with the rest of their kinsmen,

  165. the priests and the Levites, and all who had come

  166. to Jerusalem from the captivity. They appointed the Levites from

  167. twenty years old and upward to supervise the work of

  168. the House of the Lord, and Jeshua with his sons

  169. and his brothers, and Cadneil and his sons, the sons

  170. of Judah together supervise the workmen in the House of God,

  171. along with the sons of Hanedad, and the Levites their

  172. sons and brothers. And when the builders laid the foundation

  173. of the Temple of the Lord, the priests and their

  174. vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites the sons

  175. of Asaf with symbols to praise the Lord, according to

  176. the directions of David, King of Israel. And they sang

  177. received bonsily, praising and giving thanks to the Lord.

  178. For he is good, for his steadfast love endures for

  179. averageward Israel.

  180. And all the people shouted with a great shout when

  181. they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the House

  182. of the Lord was laid. But many of the priests

  183. and levites and heads of father's houses. Old men who

  184. had seen the first house wept with a loud voice

  185. when they saw the foundation of this house being laid,

  186. though many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people

  187. could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from

  188. the sound.

  189. Of the people's weeping.

  190. For the people shouted with a great shout, and the

  191. sound was.

  192. Heard far away. Ezra four.

  193. Now, when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that

  194. the returned exiles were building a temple to the Lord,

  195. the God of Israel, they approached Zerubbabel and the heads

  196. of Father's houses and said to them, let.

  197. Us build with you, for we worship your God as

  198. you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever

  199. since the days of Esarhad and King of Assyria, who

  200. brought us here.

  201. But Zorobabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of

  202. Father's houses in Israel said to them, you.

  203. Have nothing to do with us in building a house

  204. to our God.

  205. But we alone will build to the Lord the God.

  206. Of Israel, as King Sirius, the King of Persia, has

  207. commanded us.

  208. Then the people of the land discouraged the people of

  209. Judah and made them afraid to build, and bribed counselors

  210. against them to frustrate their purpose. All the days of Cyrus,

  211. King of Persia, even until the reign of Drias, King

  212. of Persia, and in the reign of a Hagariris, in

  213. the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against

  214. the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. In the days of

  215. Art Dexerxes, Bishlem and Mithradeth and Tabil and the rest

  216. of their associates wrote to Art Dexerxes, King of Persia.

  217. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated. Rheum the

  218. Commander and Shimshai the Scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem

  219. to Oar de Xerxes the King, as follows.

  220. Rhem the Commander, Shimshai the Scribe, and the rest of

  221. their associates, the judges, the governors, the officials, the Persians,

  222. the men of Erik, the Babylonians, the men of Susa,

  223. that is, the Elamites, and the rest of the nations

  224. whom the great and noble Osnapper deported and settled in

  225. the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the

  226. province beyond the river. This is a copy of the

  227. letter that they sent to Artaxerxes, the King, your servants,

  228. the men of the province beyond the river, send greeting.

  229. And now be it known.

  230. To the King that the Jews who came up from

  231. you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding

  232. that rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the walls

  233. and repairing the foundations. Now be it known to the

  234. King that if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished,

  235. they will not pay tribute, custom or toll, and the

  236. royal revenue will be impaired. Now because we eat the

  237. salt of the palace, and it is not fitting for

  238. us to witness the king's dishonor. Therefore we send and

  239. inform the King in order that search may be made

  240. in the book of the Records.

  241. Of your fathers.

  242. You will find in the book of the records and.

  243. Learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to

  244. kings and provinces, and that sedition was stirred up in

  245. it from of old. That was why this city was

  246. laid waste.

  247. We make known to.

  248. The King that if this city is rebuilt and its

  249. wall was finished, you will then have no possession in

  250. the province beyond the river.

  251. The king sent an.

  252. Answer to Rehum the Commander and Shimshi the Scribe and

  253. the rest of their associates who live in Samaria and

  254. in the rest of the province beyond the river, greeting.

  255. And now the letter that you sent to us has

  256. been plainly read before me, and I made a decree,

  257. and search has been made, and it has been found

  258. that this city from of old has risen against kings,

  259. and the rebellion and sedition have been made in it,

  260. and mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over

  261. the whole province beyond the river, to whom tribute, custom

  262. and toll were paid. Therefore, make a decree that these

  263. men be made to cease, and that this city be

  264. not rebuilt until a decree.

  265. Is made by me.

  266. And take care not to be slack in this matter.

  267. Why should damage grow to the hurt.

  268. Of the king.

  269. Then, when the copy of King Artaxerxei's letter was read

  270. before Rhem and Shimshai the Scribe and their associates, they

  271. went in haste to the Jews at Jerusalem, and by

  272. force and power made them cease. Then the work on

  273. the House of God that is in Jerusalem stopped, and

  274. it ceased until the second year of the reign of Drius,

  275. King of Persia.

  276. Ezra five.

  277. Now the prophets Hagai and Zechariah, the son of Ido

  278. prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem

  279. in the name of the God of Israel, who was

  280. over them. Then Zerubbable the son of Schiltio, and Jeshua,

  281. the son of Jozdek arose and began to rebuild the

  282. House of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets

  283. of God were with them supporting them. At the same time, Tatanai,

  284. the governor of the province beyond the river, and sheith

  285. Ar Bazanai and their associates came to them and spoke

  286. to them, thus.

  287. Who gave you a decree to build this house and

  288. to finish this structure?

  289. They also asked them this, what.

  290. Are the names of the men who are building this building?

  291. But the eye of their God was on the elders

  292. of the Jews, and they did not stop them until

  293. the report should reach Drias, and then an answer be

  294. returned by letter concerning it. This is a copy of

  295. the letter that Tatanai, the governor of the province beyond

  296. the river and sheath Our Basani and his associates, the

  297. governors who were in the province beyond the river, sent

  298. to Derias the King. They sent him a report in

  299. which was written as followers.

  300. To Drias the King.

  301. All peace.

  302. Be it known to the King that we went to

  303. the province of Judah, to the house of the Great God.

  304. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is

  305. laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and

  306. prospers in their hands. Then we asked those elders and

  307. spoke to them thus, who gave you a decree to

  308. build this house and to finish the structure. We also

  309. asked them their names for your information, that we might

  310. write down the names of their leaders.

  311. And this was their reply to us.

  312. We are the servants of the God of Heaven and Earth,

  313. and we are rebuilding the house that was built many

  314. years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.

  315. But because our fathers had angered the God of Heaven,

  316. them into the hand of Nebuchad Nezar, king of Babylon,

  317. the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried away the

  318. people to Babylonia. However, in the first year of Cyrus,

  319. King of Babylon, Cyrus the King made a decree that

  320. this House of God should be rebuilt, and the gold

  321. and silver vessels of the House of God which Nebuchadnezzar

  322. had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem

  323. and brought into the Temple of Babylon. These Cyrus the

  324. King took out of the Temple of Babylon, and they

  325. were delivered to one whose name was chees Bazar, whom

  326. he had made governor. And he said to him, take

  327. these vessels, go and put them in the temple that

  328. is in Jerusalem, and let the House of God be

  329. rebuilt on its site. Then this shes Bazar came and

  330. laid the foundations of the House of God that is

  331. in Jerusalem. And from that time until now it has

  332. been in building, and it is not yet finished.

  333. Therefore, if it seems good to the King, let search

  334. be made in the royal archives there in Babylon to

  335. see whether a decree was issued by Cyrus the King

  336. for the rebuilding of this House of God in Jerusalem.

  337. And let the king sent us his pleasure in this matter.

  338. Ezra six.

  339. Then Dius the King made a decree, and search was

  340. made in Babylonia in the house of the Archives where

  341. the documents were stored, and in Egbatana, the capital that

  342. is in the province of Media a scroll was found

  343. on which this was written a record.

  344. In the first year of Cyrus the king. Cyrus the

  345. King issued a decree concerning the House of God at Jerusalem.

  346. Let the house be rebuilt a place where sacrifices were offered,

  347. and let its foundations be retained. It shall be sixty cubits,

  348. and its breath sixty cubits, with three layers of great

  349. stones and one layer of timber. Let the cost be

  350. paid from the royal treasury. And also let the gold

  351. and silver vessels of the House of God, which Nevchadnezzar

  352. took out of the temple that is in Jerusalem and

  353. brought to Babylon, be restored and brought back to the

  354. temple that is in Jerusalem, each to its place. You

  355. shall put them in the House of God. Now therefore, Tatnai,

  356. governor of the province beyond the river Sheithar Basnai, and

  357. your associates, the governors who are in the province beyond

  358. the river keep away. Let the work on this House

  359. of God alone. Let the Governor of the Jews and

  360. the elders of the Jews rebuild this House of God

  361. on its site. Moreover, I make a decree regarding what

  362. you shall do for these elders of the Jews for

  363. the rebuilding of this house of God. The cost is

  364. to be paid to these men in full and without delay,

  365. from the royal revenue, the tribute of the ovens from

  366. beyond the river, and whatever is needed bulls, rams or

  367. sheep for burnt offerings to the God of Heaven, wheat, salt, wine,

  368. or oil. As the priests at Jerusalem require, let that

  369. be given to them day by day without fail, that

  370. they may offer pleasing sacrifices to the God of Heaven

  371. and pray for the life of the king and his sons. Also,

  372. I make a decree that if anyone alters this edict,

  373. a beam shall be pulled out of his house, and

  374. he shall be impaled on it, and his house shall

  375. be made at Dunghill. May the God who has caused

  376. his name to dwell there overthrow any king or people

  377. who shall put out a hand to alter this or

  378. to destroy this House of God that is in Jerusalem.

  379. Idrias make a decree, let it be done with all diligence.

  380. Then, according to the words sent by Durias the King,

  381. Tatan I, the governor of the province beyond the river

  382. Sheithar Bazani and their associates did with all diligence what

  383. Darias the King had ordered, and the elders of the

  384. Jews built and prospered through the prophesying of Hagi the

  385. Prophet and Zechariah, the son of Ita. They finished their

  386. building by decree of the God of Israel, and by

  387. decree of Cyrus and Darias and Artaxerxes, king of Persia.

  388. And this house was finished on the third day of

  389. the month of Adar, in the sixth year of the

  390. reign of Darias, the King and the people of Israel,

  391. the priests and the Levites and the rest of the

  392. returned exiles, celebrated the dedication of this house of God

  393. with joy. They offered at the dedication of this house

  394. of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs,

  395. and as a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male

  396. goats according to the number of the tribes of Israel.

  397. They set the priests and their divisions, and the Levites

  398. in their divisions, for the service.

  399. Of God at Jerusalem.

  400. As it is written in the Book of Moses, on

  401. the fourteenth day of the first month, the returned exiles

  402. kept the passover for the priests and the levites had

  403. purified themselves together, all of them were clean. So they

  404. slaughtered the passover lamb for all the return to exiles,

  405. for their fellow priests.

  406. And for themselves.

  407. It was eaten by the people of Israel who had

  408. returned from exile, and also by everyone who had joined

  409. them and separated himself from the uncleanness of the peoples

  410. of the land, to worship the Lord, the God of Israel.

  411. And they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days

  412. with joy, for the Lord had made them joyful and

  413. had turned the heart of the King of Assyria to them,

  414. so that he aided them in the work of the

  415. house of God, the God of Israel.

  416. Ezra.

  417. Seven Now after this, in the reign of our Deserxes,

  418. King of Persia, Ezra the son of Sareeah, son of Azariah,

  419. son of Hilkiah, son of Shalem, son of Zadok, son

  420. of Ahitub, son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Moreath,

  421. son of Zarahiah, son of Uzi, son of Buckeye, son

  422. of Abaishua, son of Phineas, son of Eliezer, son of Erin,

  423. the chief priest. This Ezra went up from Babylonia. He

  424. was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, that

  425. the Lord, the God of Israel, had given. And the

  426. King granted him all that he asked. For the hand

  427. of the Lord his God was on him. And there

  428. went up also to Jerusalem in the seventh year of

  429. Artaxerxes the King, some of the people of Israel, and

  430. some of the priests and levites, the singers and gatekeepers,

  431. and the temple servants. And Ezra came to Jerusalem in

  432. the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of

  433. the king. For on the first day of the first

  434. month he began to go up from Babylonia. And on

  435. the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem.

  436. For the good hand of his God was on him.

  437. For Ezra had set his heart to study the law

  438. of the Lord and to do it, and to teach

  439. his statutes and rules in Israel. This is a copy

  440. of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the Priest,

  441. the Scribe, a man learned in manners of the commandments

  442. of the Lord and his statutes for Israel.

  443. Artaxerxes, King of Kings, to Ezra the Priest, the Scribe

  444. of the Lord of the God of Heaven.

  445. Peace.

  446. Yes, and now I make a decree that anyone of

  447. the people of Israel or their priests, all levites in

  448. my kingdom, who freely offers to go to Jerusalem, may.

  449. Go with you.

  450. For you are sent by the King and his seven

  451. counselors to make inquiries about Judah and Jerusalem according to

  452. the law of your God, which is in your hand,

  453. and also to carry the silver and gold that the

  454. King and his counselors have freely offered to the God

  455. of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, with all the

  456. silver and gold that you shall find in the whole

  457. province of Babylonia, and with the free will offerings of

  458. the people and the priests vowed willingly for the House

  459. of their God that is in Jerusalem. With this money,

  460. then you shall with all diligence by bulls, ram and lambs,

  461. with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and you

  462. shall offer them on the altar of the House of

  463. your God that is in Jerusalem. Whatever seems good to

  464. you and your brothers to do with the rest of

  465. the silver and gold, you may do, according to the

  466. will of your God. The vessels that have been given

  467. you for the service of the House of your God,

  468. you shall deliver before the God of Jerusalem. And whatever

  469. else is required for the House of your God, which

  470. it falls to you to provide, you may provide it

  471. out of the King's treasury. And I are to Xerxes

  472. the King, make a decree to all the treasurers in

  473. the province beyond the river, whatever Ezra the priests the

  474. scribe of the Law of the God of Heaven requires

  475. of you, let it be done with all diligence, up

  476. to one hundred talents of silver, one hundred cares of wheat,

  477. one hundred baths of wine, one hundred baths of oil

  478. and salt, without prescribing how much. Whatever is decreed by

  479. the God of Heaven, let it be done in full

  480. for the House of the God of Heaven, lest his

  481. wrath be against the realm of the King and his sons.

  482. We also notify you that it shall not be lawful

  483. to impose tribute, custom, or toll on any one of

  484. the priests, the levites, the singers, the doorkeepers, the temple servants,

  485. or other servants of this house of God. And you, Ezra,

  486. according to the wisdom of your God that is in

  487. your hand, appoint magistrates and judges who may judge all

  488. the people in the province beyond the river, all such

  489. as know the laws of your God, and those who

  490. do not know them. You shall teach whoever will not

  491. obey the law of your God and the law of

  492. the King. Let judgment be strictly executed on him, whether

  493. for death or for banishment, or for confiscation of his goods,

  494. or for imprisonment.

  495. Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, who

  496. put such a thing as this into the heart of

  497. the King to beautify the house of the Lord that

  498. is in Jerusalem, and who extended to me his steadfast

  499. love before the King and his counselors, before all the

  500. King's mighty officers. I took courage, for the hand of

  501. the Lord my God was on me, and I gathered

  502. leading men from Israel to go up with me.

  503. Ezra.

  504. Eight these are the heads of their father's houses. And

  505. this is the genealogy of those who went up with

  506. me from Babylonia in the reign of Artaxerxes the.

  507. King, of the sons of Finnihas Gersham, of the sons

  508. of Ithamar Daniel, of the sons of David Hattish, of

  509. the sons of Shekhaniah, who was of the sons of

  510. Parish Zechariah, with whom were registered one hundred and fifty

  511. men men of the sons of Paieth moab Eliah, Hoenai,

  512. the son of Zarahiah, and with him two hundred men

  513. of the sons of Zatu Shekaniah the son of Jeheseel,

  514. and with him three hundred men of the sons of

  515. Aidan Ibid the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty

  516. men of the sons of Elim Jeshiah the son of Athaliah,

  517. and with him seventy men of the sons of Shephatiah,

  518. Zebidah the son of Michael, and with him eighty men

  519. of the sons of joab Obadiah, the son of Jehiel

  520. and with him two hundred eighteen men of the sons

  521. of Beini Sheelamuth the son of Josephiah, and with him

  522. one hundred and sixty men of the sons of Bibi Zechariah,

  523. the son of Bibi, and with him twenty eight men

  524. of the sons of Asgad Johanan, the son of Hakatan,

  525. and with him one hundred ten men of the sons

  526. of adanaikm those who came later, their names being Litholet, Jayuel,

  527. and Shimeah, and with them sixty men of the sons

  528. of big By, Youthai and Zachar, and with them seventy men.

  529. I gathered them to the river that runs to a HAVEVII,

  530. and there we camped three days. As I reviewed the

  531. people and the priests, I found their of the sons

  532. of Levi. Then I sent for eliezers Ario, Shameyah, El Nathan, Jereb,

  533. el Nathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Mishulum leading men, and for

  534. joyiib and al Nathan, who were men of insight, and

  535. sent them to Ido, the leading man at the place Kassifia,

  536. telling them what to say to Ido and his brothers

  537. and the temple servants at the place Cassifia, namely to

  538. send us ministers for the house of our God. And

  539. by the good hand of our God on us, they

  540. brought us a man of discretion of the sons of Malai,

  541. the son of Levi, son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, with

  542. his sons and kinsman eighteen also Hashebiah, and with him

  543. Jeshiah of the sons of Maurai, with his kinsmen and

  544. their sons. Twenty besides two hundred and twenty of the

  545. temple servants whom David and his officials had set apart

  546. to attend the Levites. We're all mentioned by name. Then

  547. I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava, that

  548. we might humble ourselves before our God to seek from

  549. him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all

  550. our goods. For I was ashamed to ask the King

  551. for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us

  552. against the enemy in our way, since we had told.

  553. The King the hand of our God is for good

  554. on all who seek him, and the power of his

  555. wrath is against all who forsake him.

  556. So we fasted and implored our God for this, and

  557. he listened to our entreaty. Then I set apart twelve

  558. of the leading priests Cherebiah Hashebiah, and ten of their

  559. kinsmen with them, and I weighed out to them the

  560. silver and the gold and the vessels the offering for

  561. the House of our God, that the King and his

  562. counselors and his lords and all Israel there present had offered.

  563. I waded out into their head and six hundred and

  564. fifty talents of silver and silver vessels worth two hundred talents,

  565. and one hundred talents of gold, twenty bowls of gold

  566. worth one thousand derens, and two vessels of fine bright bronze,

  567. as precious as gold. And I said to them, you

  568. are holy to the Lord, and the vessels are holy,

  569. and the silver and the gold are a free will

  570. offering to the Lord, the God of your fathers. Guard

  571. them and keep them until you weigh them before the

  572. chief priests and the Levites and the heads of fathers

  573. houses in Israel at Jerusalem, within the chambers of the

  574. House of the Lord. So the priests and the levites

  575. took over the weight of the silver and the gold

  576. and the vessels to bring them to Jerusalem, to the

  577. House of our God. Then we departed from the river

  578. Aheva on the twelfth day of the first month to

  579. go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was honest,

  580. and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy

  581. and from ambushes. By the way we came to Jerusalem,

  582. and there we remigned three days. On the fourth day,

  583. within the House of our God, the silver and the

  584. gold and the vessels were weighed into the hands of Merimath,

  585. the priest, son of Uriah, and with him was Eliezar,

  586. the son of Finnihas. And with them were the Levites

  587. josephab the son of Jeshua, and Noahdiah, the son of Benui.

  588. The whole was counted and weighed, and the weight of

  589. everything was recorded. At that time, those who had come

  590. from captivity, the returned exiles offered burnt offerings to the

  591. God of Israel, twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety six rams,

  592. seventy seven lambs, and as a sin offering, twelve male goats.

  593. All of this was a burnt offering to the Lord.

  594. They also delivered the king's commissions to the king's satraps

  595. and to the governors of the province be On the river,

  596. and they aided the people in the house.

  597. Of God Ezra. Nine.

  598. After these things had been done, the officials approached me

  599. and said.

  600. The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites

  601. have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands

  602. with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizites,

  603. the Jebuzites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

  604. For they have taken some of their daughters to be

  605. wise for themselves and for their sons, so that the

  606. Holy Race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands.

  607. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and

  608. chief men has been foremost.

  609. As soon as I heard this, I tore my garment

  610. and my cloak, and pulled hair from my head and beard,

  611. and sat appalled. Then all who trembled at the words

  612. of the God of Israel because of the faithlessness of

  613. the returned exiles gathered around me while I sat appalled

  614. until the evening sacrifice. And at the evening sacrifice, I

  615. rose from my fasting, with my garment and my cloak torn,

  616. and fell upon my knees and spread out my hands

  617. to the Lord my God, saying, Oh, my God, I

  618. am ashamed and blushed, to lift my face to you,

  619. my God, For our iniquities have risen higher than our heads,

  620. and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens. From

  621. the days of our fathers to this day we have

  622. been in great guilt. And for our iniquities we, our

  623. kings and our priests have been given into the hand

  624. of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to

  625. captiv to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is today.

  626. But now, for a brief moment, favor has been shown

  627. by the Lord, our God, to leave us a remnant

  628. and to give us a secure hold within his holy place,

  629. that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us

  630. a little reviving in our slavery, for we are slaves.

  631. Yet Our God is not forsakenness in our slavery, but

  632. has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings

  633. of Persia, to grant us some reviving, to set up

  634. the House of our God, to repair its ruins, and

  635. to give us protection in Judea and Jerusalem. And now, o,

  636. our God, what shall we say after this? For we

  637. have forsaken your commandments, which you commanded by your servants,

  638. the prophet saying, the land that you are entering to

  639. take possession of it is a land impure with the

  640. impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations

  641. that have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness. Therefore,

  642. do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take

  643. their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace

  644. or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the

  645. good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance

  646. to your children forever, and after all that has come

  647. upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt.

  648. Seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than

  649. our iniquities deserved, and have given us such a remnant

  650. as this, shall we break your commandments again and enter

  651. mary with the peoples who practice these abominations. Would you

  652. not be angry with us until you consumed us, so

  653. that there should be no remnant nor any to escape, O, Lord,

  654. the God of Israel, you are just, for we are

  655. left a remnant that has escaped as it is today. Behold,

  656. we are before you and our guilt, for none can

  657. stand before you because of this, Ezra.

  658. Ten. While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting

  659. himself down before the house of God, a very great

  660. assembly of men, women and children gathered to him out

  661. of Israel. For the people wept bitterly, and Shekinaiah, the

  662. son of Jehiel of the sons of Elim, addressed.

  663. Ezra, we have broken faith with our God and have

  664. married foreign women from the peoples of the land. But

  665. even now there's hope for Israel in spite of this. Therefore,

  666. let us make a cove with our God to put

  667. away all these wives and their children according to the

  668. counsel of my Lord and of those who tremble at

  669. the commandment of our God. And let it be done

  670. according to the law. Arise, for it is your task

  671. and we are with you. Be strong and do it.

  672. Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites

  673. and all Israel take oath that they would do as

  674. had been said.

  675. So they took the oath.

  676. Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and

  677. went to the chamber of Jehohanan, the son of Eliashib,

  678. where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water,

  679. for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.

  680. And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to

  681. all the returned exiles, that they should assemble at Jerusalem,

  682. and that if anyone did not come within three days,

  683. by order of the officials and the elders, all his

  684. property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the

  685. congregation of the exiles. Then all the men of Judah

  686. and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within.

  687. The three days.

  688. It was the ninth month. On the twentieth day of

  689. the month, and all the people sat in the open

  690. square before the House of God, trembling because of this matter,

  691. and because of the heavy rain and ezra. The priests

  692. stood up and said to them.

  693. You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so

  694. increased the guilt of Israel. Now, then make confession to

  695. the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do his

  696. will separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and

  697. from the foreign wives.

  698. Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, it.

  699. Is so, we must do as you have said. But

  700. the people are many, and it is a time of

  701. heavy rain, whom we cannot stand in the open nor

  702. is this a task for one day or for two

  703. For we have greatly transgressed in this matter. Let our

  704. officials stand for the whole assembly. Let all in our

  705. cities who have taken foreign wives come at a point

  706. of times, and with them the elders and judges of

  707. every city, until the fierce wrath of our God over

  708. this matter is turned away from us.

  709. Only Jonathan, the son of Asahel and Josiah the son

  710. of Tikva opposed this, and Mishulem and Shabbathai the Levites

  711. supported him. Then the return to exiles did so Ezra.

  712. The priests selected men heads of father's houses according to

  713. their father's houses, each of them designated by name. On

  714. the first day of the tenth month, they sat down

  715. to examine the matter, and by the first day of

  716. the first month they had come to the end of

  717. all the men who had married foreign women. Now there

  718. were found some of the sons of the priests who

  719. had married foreign women, Eliezer, Jereb, and Gedeliah, some of

  720. the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak and his brothers.

  721. They pledged themselves to put away their wives and their guilt,

  722. offering was a ram of the flock for their guilt.

  723. Of the sons of Immer, anne and I and Zebediah.

  724. Of the sons of Heram, Mayosiah, Elijah, Semeiah, Jehiel and Usiah.

  725. Of the sons of Pasher, elio Eni, Mayosiah, Ishmael Nathanil,

  726. Joseabad and Elisa. Of the Levites josephad Shimii, Kaliah that

  727. is Callita, Pathaliah, Judah and Eliezer of the Singers Eliahshiv,

  728. of the Gatekeepers Shalem, Teelam and Uri and of Israel.

  729. Of the sons of Parish Ramiah, Isiah, Malchija, Midgemen, Eliezar,

  730. Hashebayah and Benaiah. Of the sons of Elim, Mattanayah, Zechariah,

  731. jehiel Abdai, Jeremov and Elijah. Of the sons of Zatu,

  732. elio en I, Eliashib, matt Nayah, Jeremov, Zabad and Desaizah.

  733. Of the sons of Bibi were j Johanan Hananiah, Zavi

  734. and Athlai. Of the sons of Beini were Meshulem, malik Adeya, Jayshab,

  735. Shiel and Jeremov of the sons of Peef moab aDNA

  736. keelaal Bneia, Mayasiah, matt Andyah, Bezeleel, Binui and Manassa. Of

  737. the sons of Haram eliezer Ishaijah Malchijah, Shimeya, Shimian, Benjamin,

  738. Malik and Shamariah. Of the sons of Haitiam, mattin I, Madeta,

  739. Zabad Eliphalet, Jeremi, Manassa and Simii. Of the sons of

  740. Beini Mayadi, Amram, Yule Banaya, Badiah, Kellhi Vaniah, merramoth Eliashib, Mattanayah, Mattini, Jayasu.

  741. Of the sons of Benuai, Shimii, Sleemiah, nathan Adeah, Mcnadobi, Sheshai, Shaerai, Azarel, Shelmiah, Shamariah, Shalem,

  742. Amariah and Joseph.

  743. Of the sons of Nebo.

  744. Jail, Mattithiah, Zebad, Zebinah, Jedi Joel and Benaia. All these

  745. had married foreign women, and some of the women had

  746. even born children.
