The Fast That Pleases God - Part 2

Brother Jim: And as we discovered, fasting is

Brother Jim: not simply about going without

Brother Jim: food.

Brother Jim: Now, again, I know on the internet everybody talks, you

Brother Jim: know, do this fast, do this cleanse, do anything.

Brother Jim: No, no, I'm talking about biblical fasting.

Brother Jim: And as we discover, we're going to find out there's more ways to

Brother Jim: fast more ways.

Brother Jim: It's about going deeper with God.

Brother Jim: And there's the challenge because how many of us really

Brother Jim: want to go deeper with God?

Brother Jim: Or we become comfortable in our where we're at, right?

Brother Jim: Because maybe, oh my goodness, God might ask me to do something

Brother Jim: and maybe I'm afraid of that.

Brother Jim: Maybe I don't want to go there.

Brother Jim: He might say, Brother Dave, I want you to go to Africa.

Brother Jim: Now, I know Dave.

Brother Jim: He's a man like me.

Brother Jim: He sweats a lot.

Brother Jim: Probably would not be a good matchup out in Africa.

Brother Jim: But I know Brother Dave.

Brother Jim: He would go.

Brother Jim: And as we talked about fasting last week, we also discovered

Brother Jim: something very important.

Brother Jim: You can have fasting, but prayer is the other hand.

Brother Jim: It goes together biblical fasting and prayer.

Brother Jim: As I said last week, at the end,

Brother Jim: they kind of go together like a

Brother Jim: peanut butter and jelly

Brother Jim: sandwich.

Brother Jim: They just go together.

Brother Jim: Now you can use your own analogy, whatever you like.

Brother Jim: And that brings us to the question I want us to wrestle

Brother Jim: with this morning.

Brother Jim: Why do you pray?

Brother Jim: Why do you pray?

Brother Jim: Now, we could go up and down the pews, and I'm sure we'd have

Brother Jim: pretty much similar answers, but I want to go to the next level.

Brother Jim: Why do you really pray?

Brother Jim: Oh, we're great at asking God for stuff, aren't we?

Brother Jim: But what about when it comes to

Brother Jim: asking God, what do you want

Brother Jim: from me?

Brother Jim: That's kind of a different level, isn't it?

Brother Jim: Because again, God might require or ask us to do something we

Brother Jim: don't want to do.

Brother Jim: Or maybe it takes us out of our comfort zone.

Brother Jim: A little scary situation, isn't it?

Brother Jim: Because again, we are creatures of habits, are we not?

Brother Jim: And again, I'm going to ask you think about that question.

Brother Jim: Why do you pray?

Brother Jim: Is it because we were taught to pray as a child?

Brother Jim: How many of us were taught to pray as a child?

Brother Jim: Good foundation, don't get me wrong.

Brother Jim: But how many adults?

Brother Jim: That's the last time they prayed.

Brother Jim: A little prayer before dinner.

Brother Jim: Our little prayer at night.

Brother Jim: As they lay down their little heads.

Brother Jim: Is it because we.

Brother Jim: We pray that it's because that is what good Christians are

Brother Jim: supposed to do.

Brother Jim: We go through the act of it.

Brother Jim: But are we really communicating with God?

Brother Jim: Are we actually in.

Brother Jim: You ever talk to somebody, tell

Brother Jim: them this great story, tell them

Brother Jim: your problems and their mind is

Brother Jim: not there.

Brother Jim: You can tell it.

Brother Jim: They're thinking about maybe that pizza that's waiting on

Brother Jim: them at home.

Brother Jim: Ball game on TV, sale on purses, you name it.

Brother Jim: They just want to get through the conversation.

Brother Jim: And maybe we do that in our prayer.

Brother Jim: We just want to go through the

Brother Jim: conversation with God, get it

Brother Jim: done, hit all them little

Brother Jim: checks.

Brother Jim: True, I've done it because I'm a good Christian.

Brother Jim: I'm a good Christian.

Brother Jim: Do you pray when you need something?

Brother Jim: Do you pray when you are afraid?

Brother Jim: Do you pray when you are sick?

Brother Jim: Do you pray when you just don't know what else to do?

Brother Jim: Or do you pray because you

Brother Jim: genuinely desire to know God

Brother Jim: closer?

Brother Jim: And for me, that last question is the million dollar question

Brother Jim: for all of us.

Brother Jim: Do we pray because we genuinely want to know God more?

Brother Jim: And I want you to think about that for a moment, church,

Brother Jim: because there is a difference between using prayer and living

Brother Jim: a life of prayer.

Brother Jim: Using prayer on this hand and on

Brother Jim: this hand, living a life of

Brother Jim: prayer.

Brother Jim: And I believe God wants us to understand that difference.

Brother Jim: How many people in here and out

Brother Jim: there really understand the

Brother Jim: meaning of the word

Brother Jim: relationship?

Brother Jim: Now, again, if I was going to up

Brother Jim: and down the pews and ask you,

Brother Jim: what does relationship mean to

Brother Jim: you?

Brother Jim: We're probably going to have a lot of similar answers.

Brother Jim: but there might be a little various.

Brother Jim: But again, I think we all

Brother Jim: understand what a relationship

Brother Jim: is.

Brother Jim: But one thing in a relationship

Brother Jim: is it's a two way street, is it

Brother Jim: not?

Brother Jim: I love my wife.

Brother Jim: She loves me.

Brother Jim: So there's love going back and forth.

Brother Jim: We communicate most of the time,

Brother Jim: more me listening and

Brother Jim: forgetting.

Brother Jim: But there's communication.

Brother Jim: She gives, I give.

Brother Jim: I think we understand what a

Brother Jim: relationship is, how many

Brother Jim: people, society in general,

Brother Jim: understand.

Brother Jim: And here's a big question.

Brother Jim: Understand that God wants a relationship with them.

Brother Jim: I pray that you know it.

Brother Jim: But how many people out there in our world today, how many of

Brother Jim: your loved ones, how many of your friends are.

Brother Jim: Let's just break it down.

Brother Jim: How many people in church miss that they miss it?

Brother Jim: That God wants a relationship with you.

Brother Jim: You are that special.

Brother Jim: You are that important to him.

Brother Jim: Well, wait a minute.

Brother Jim: Let's remember.

Brother Jim: God created you.

Brother Jim: Why wouldn't he want a relationship with you?

Brother Jim: But we're too busy.

Brother Jim: We have.

Brother Jim: Oh, we could go on and on.

Brother Jim: Why?

Brother Jim: We can't find the time or make

Brother Jim: the time to have a relationship

Brother Jim: with God.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: But then, on the other hand, you have those people who do so

Brother Jim: again, it's a balance.

Brother Jim: Where does the balance fall?

Brother Jim: The scales.

Brother Jim: In revelation three twenty.

Brother Jim: This is how the ESV version.

Brother Jim: Behold, I stand at the door and knock.

Brother Jim: If anyone hears my voice and

Brother Jim: opens the door, I will come into

Brother Jim: him and eat with him, and he

Brother Jim: with me.

Brother Jim: That sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

Brother Jim: Yeah, our picture right up there behind the screen.

Brother Jim: Jesus.

Brother Jim: Doing what?

Brother Jim: He's right there at the door.

Brother Jim: Church, have you heard his voice?

Brother Jim: Church, have you opened the door in your own personal life?

Brother Jim: Simple questions.

Brother Jim: Do you know we pray because God

Brother Jim: wants a relationship with you

Brother Jim: and he wants a relationship with

Brother Jim: me.

Brother Jim: God wants to hear from you and me.

Brother Jim: Now think about that, Bob.

Brother Jim: If you don't hear from Linda, if

Brother Jim: you're getting a cold shoulder,

Brother Jim: you're going to start to wonder,

Brother Jim: aren't you?

Brother Jim: And usually most men, the first thought is, what did I do?

Brother Jim: What did I say?

Brother Jim: But you're going to pick up pretty quick after a little bit

Brother Jim: of silence or attitude or looks.

Brother Jim: Let's be honest, men.

Brother Jim: We know the looks.

Brother Jim: Even as sons, I can only speak for me.

Brother Jim: But when I get to look for mom, I know even at my age and her

Brother Jim: age, I'm in trouble.

Brother Jim: But again, there's that relationship.

Brother Jim: God wants to hear from us.

Brother Jim: And that's a big problem in this world today, isn't it?

Brother Jim: We're too busy tweeting,

Brother Jim: talking, doing whatever, trying

Brother Jim: to survive.

Brother Jim: Keep our heads above water in our daily weekly activities.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: The creator of the universe.

Brother Jim: Think about this.

Brother Jim: The creator of the universe invites you to talk with him.

Brother Jim: What an invitation that is.

Brother Jim: And wow, kind of a shocker here.

Brother Jim: The creator of the universe wants to talk to little old me.

Brother Jim: Really?

Brother Jim: How many people in their mind

Brother Jim: think, well, God's got more

Brother Jim: important things to do than talk

Brother Jim: to me?

Brother Jim: I'm a nobody.

Brother Jim: No you're not.

Brother Jim: You are his creation.

Brother Jim: He created you.

Brother Jim: What do I say?

Brother Jim: You have reason.

Brother Jim: You have value.

Brother Jim: And most of all, you have purpose, you have value.

Brother Jim: And most of all, you are loved.

Brother Jim: And that's true.

Brother Jim: That is true.

Brother Jim: He wants to talk to little old you.

Brother Jim: To little old me.

Brother Jim: Prayer is not simply some religious activity.

Brother Jim: Prayer is relationship.

Brother Jim: Think about the people you love.

Brother Jim: You do not communicate with them because you're checking it off.

Brother Jim: That good old checklist, are you?

Brother Jim: Now, sometimes we do around the

Brother Jim: holidays, you know, gotta send

Brother Jim: out a card to Aunt Ethel or

Brother Jim: Cousin Eddie.

Brother Jim: So there we go.

Brother Jim: Check.

Brother Jim: But I'm talking about.

Brother Jim: You know what I'm talking about.

Brother Jim: Real relationships.

Brother Jim: You're not doing it now, I'll be honest with you.

Brother Jim: How many of us have that three

Brother Jim: hundred sixty world or whatever

Brother Jim: it is where you can check on

Brother Jim: your loved ones, tells you where

Brother Jim: they're at.

Brother Jim: And Lynn's smiling.

Brother Jim: Yes, I will admit that is a

Brother Jim: great tool for parents because

Brother Jim: even though three of them are

Brother Jim: out of the house, I can still

Brother Jim: see where they are and what time

Brother Jim: they're there.

Brother Jim: Ellie, you don't have a chance.

Brother Jim: But again, it's not a checklist.

Brother Jim: You want to talk to them.

Brother Jim: You communicate because you want to know them.

Brother Jim: You want to hear their voice.

Brother Jim: Let's be honest.

Brother Jim: How many of us have saved voicemails from people we've

Brother Jim: lost in the past?

Brother Jim: Or we hang on to letters and cards of people we love because

Brother Jim: we just can't pitch them.

Brother Jim: They mean something to us.

Brother Jim: You want to know what's happening in their life?

Brother Jim: You don't want to see it on Facebook?

Brother Jim: Hey, you're having a kid.

Brother Jim: I'm having a grandkid.

Brother Jim: Geez, everybody else knew.

Brother Jim: I want you to tell me that

Brother Jim: before you announce it to the

Brother Jim: world.

Brother Jim: You want to share what is happening in your life.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: You want your loved ones to know that is a relationship.

Brother Jim: Brothers and sisters, people of Rockford Church.

Brother Jim: Do you have a relationship with God?

Brother Jim: Now here comes the big question right now.

Brother Jim: Right now, right now.

Brother Jim: Do you have a relationship with God at this very moment?

Brother Jim: And if you do, praise God, but don't quit on it.

Brother Jim: Keep moving forward.

Brother Jim: But if you don't have a relationship with God, with

Brother Jim: Jesus Christ, and today is your day, what will happen?

Brother Jim: Let's be honest.

Brother Jim: What will happen to you and your soul?

Brother Jim: My heart breaks.

Brother Jim: My heart breaks.

Brother Jim: But yet, how many of us avoid that reality?

Brother Jim: If you look around in our our

Brother Jim: area today, the amount of people

Brother Jim: losing their lives, motorcycle

Brother Jim: accidents, car accidents, trees

Brother Jim: falling.

Brother Jim: That should kind of wake us up to think about if today is my

Brother Jim: day, am I going to heaven or am I going to hell?

Brother Jim: Pretty simple.

Brother Jim: Prayer is our opportunity to come before God and say, Lord,

Brother Jim: here I am, Brother Jim.

Brother Jim: Wart scars, sin and all.

Brother Jim: Here I am before you.

Brother Jim: Not because God does not already know where we are.

Brother Jim: Guess what?

Brother Jim: He wants us to turn towards him.

Brother Jim: He wants us to come home.

Brother Jim: We pray because we need God.

Brother Jim: The whole world needs God.

Brother Jim: Our homes, our schools, our governments, our children, our

Brother Jim: churches, our our pastors.

Brother Jim: The list can go on and on.

Brother Jim: We all need God.

Brother Jim: True, we all need God.

Brother Jim: And listen up church.

Brother Jim: I don't care what the world says.

Brother Jim: Society says what some superstar entertainer says, what some

Brother Jim: shrink with a PhD says.

Brother Jim: We need to pray to the one and only God because we need God

Brother Jim: right now more than ever.

Brother Jim: Look around.

Brother Jim: Yes, God is in control and I've got complete faith in him.

Brother Jim: But how many times are we losing

Brother Jim: the battle as a church and as

Brother Jim: the people of the church and

Brother Jim: pastors included?

Brother Jim: And let's be honest, sometimes

Brother Jim: we don't know even where to

Brother Jim: begin.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: That's where prayer leads is to say, God, I don't know, but I

Brother Jim: want you to use me.

Brother Jim: Use me, Lord, put me in a situation.

Brother Jim: But I need your guidance.

Brother Jim: I need your boldness.

Brother Jim: I need your words.

Brother Jim: And I know a lot of you.

Brother Jim: Has he ever failed you?

Brother Jim: You're up there.

Brother Jim: You could be tongue tied and everything else.

Brother Jim: But God comes to the rescue and he will give you the words.

Brother Jim: But are you being obedient to him and coming to him in prayer?

Brother Jim: And how many of us are just plain out lazy?

Brother Jim: We know we got a situation

Brother Jim: coming up and instead of turning

Brother Jim: to God, oh, we bumble through

Brother Jim: it.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: Just think, if we be proactive and step forward to God and say,

Brother Jim: Lord, I need you.

Brother Jim: I am coming to you as an

Brother Jim: obedient servant and I'm

Brother Jim: praying, Lord, give me

Brother Jim: something.

Brother Jim: He's not going to let you down.

Brother Jim: And if anyone here this morning disagrees with that statement,

Brother Jim: please see me after church.

Brother Jim: If you go to John fifteen one to five, I am the true vine, and my

Brother Jim: father is the vine dresser.

Brother Jim: Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away.

Brother Jim: And every branch that does bear

Brother Jim: fruit he prunes, that it may do

Brother Jim: what.

Brother Jim: It may bear more fruit.

Brother Jim: Already you are clean because of

Brother Jim: the word that I have spoken to

Brother Jim: you.

Brother Jim: Oh, here we go.

Brother Jim: Abide in me and I in you.

Brother Jim: As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in

Brother Jim: the vine, neither can you unless you what you abide in me.

Brother Jim: I am the vine.

Brother Jim: You are the branches.

Brother Jim: Whoever abides in me, and I in him, he.

Brother Jim: It, he it is that bears much fruit.

Brother Jim: Here we go.

Brother Jim: For apart from me you can do nothing.

Brother Jim: Now let me ask.

Brother Jim: Let me tell you.

Brother Jim: That's a humbling statement, isn't it?

Brother Jim: That is very humbling, because

Brother Jim: we live in a world that

Brother Jim: constantly tells us you can do

Brother Jim: it.

Brother Jim: You can do it by yourself.

Brother Jim: Brother Jim, brother Jim, be independent.

Brother Jim: Figure it out.

Brother Jim: Take control.

Brother Jim: Make your own way.

Brother Jim: Or you don't have to do anything at all.

Brother Jim: No need to take responsibility.

Brother Jim: No need for responsibility.

Brother Jim: Do not worry.

Brother Jim: Someone else will do it for you.

Brother Jim: Or. Or they'll take care of it for you.

Brother Jim: Oh, oh, and by the way, Jim,

Brother Jim: you're perfect just the way you

Brother Jim: are.

Brother Jim: So, Chris.

Brother Jim: You hear that, Chris?

Brother Jim: Yeah.

Brother Jim: Does that sound familiar to

Brother Jim: anybody today in what we're

Brother Jim: hearing, the garbage and lies

Brother Jim: that are being spewed out of

Brother Jim: from Washington to Hollywood,

Brother Jim: all across the entertainment

Brother Jim: scene.

Brother Jim: Across the board, it's garbage.

Brother Jim: And yes, church, even in our churches today.

Brother Jim: And here comes a question for you.

Brother Jim: Whose feet does responsibility lie at in our world today?

Brother Jim: Who's sitting?

Brother Jim: Oh, here we go.

Brother Jim: Who's just sitting back there and laughing at mankind and

Brother Jim: saying, come on, boys and girls.

Brother Jim: No need to turn to the carpenter.

Brother Jim: No need to turn to that Jesus.

Brother Jim: No need to turn to that God.

Brother Jim: You keep on being lazy and content.

Brother Jim: No need to turn.

Brother Jim: No need to have a relationship.

Brother Jim: No need to repent and no need to pray.

Brother Jim: Keep doing what you're doing and

Brother Jim: I'm going to have your soul one

Brother Jim: day.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: Sounds good, doesn't it?

Brother Jim: I don't have to do a stinking thing, but one day you will be

Brother Jim: held accountable, will you not?

Brother Jim: Whether you believe it or not, you will be held accountable.

Brother Jim: One day you will be judged.

Brother Jim: And oh, by the way, I will get your kids.

Brother Jim: I will get your grandkids too, because you.

Brother Jim: Yes, we as adults, we as parents, grandparents, great

Brother Jim: grandparents, we as the church did not teach or show them

Brother Jim: anything about what God really wants from his creation.

Brother Jim: So let that fall on you right now.

Brother Jim: Yes, Satan speaking, I will get you.

Brother Jim: Oh, and by the way, I'm going to

Brother Jim: get your kids and your grandkids

Brother Jim: too.

Brother Jim: And you're making it so easy for me.

Brother Jim: Anybody disagree with that?

Brother Jim: What our society, what our

Brother Jim: world, the way we're living our

Brother Jim: lives.

Brother Jim: And again, it's a scale, my friends.

Brother Jim: It's a scale.

Brother Jim: Some are, some aren't.

Brother Jim: But where does that way, who has the heavier on the scale side?

Brother Jim: Oh, and by the way.

Brother Jim: What the devil likes to say or what?

Brother Jim: He. Let me rephrase that.

Brother Jim: He doesn't enjoy this.

Brother Jim: But yeah, his son.

Brother Jim: God's son came to this earth, died for mankind, sin.

Brother Jim: And three days later he rose from the dead.

Brother Jim: But I don't want you to know that you go ahead and celebrate

Brother Jim: it on Christmas and Easter.

Brother Jim: That's okay.

Brother Jim: You just keep on doing what

Brother Jim: you're doing and I'll get you

Brother Jim: in.

Brother Jim: John eight forty four.

Brother Jim: And I know I've used this verse many a times, but again, it

Brother Jim: holds so true.

Brother Jim: You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do

Brother Jim: your father's desires.

Brother Jim: He was a murderer from the

Brother Jim: beginning and does not stand in

Brother Jim: truth because there is no truth

Brother Jim: in him.

Brother Jim: When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a

Brother Jim: liar and the father of lies.

Brother Jim: But prayer should remind us I need God.

Brother Jim: Prayer is an admission of dependence.

Brother Jim: When we pray, we are saying, Lord, I cannot do this alone.

Brother Jim: Lord, I need your wisdom.

Brother Jim: Lord, I need your strength.

Brother Jim: Lord, I need your direction.

Brother Jim: Lord, I need your peace.

Brother Jim: Lord, I need your forgiveness.

Brother Jim: Lord, I need your presence and church.

Brother Jim: There is nothing weak about admitting that dependence on God

Brother Jim: is not a weakness.

Brother Jim: There is no exercise or supplement in the world that can

Brother Jim: do what God can do.

Brother Jim: When he gives you the strength to do something.

Brother Jim: You can pound all the power you want, pop all the pills you

Brother Jim: want, inject yourself with whatever you got.

Brother Jim: It still ain't going to match the strength of God.

Brother Jim: Prayer is where our strength begins.

Brother Jim: In Philippians four thirteen, I can do all things through him

Brother Jim: who strengthens me.

Brother Jim: How about a church?

Brother Jim: Does anyone feel a little stronger today?

Brother Jim: Feeling a little buff.

Brother Jim: Feeling a little jacked.

Brother Jim: That was one of my words back in the day in the gym.

Brother Jim: Are you feeling jacked?

Brother Jim: And I would give anything to see

Brother Jim: a everybody come through this

Brother Jim: church one Sunday morning

Brother Jim: feeling buff, feeling jacked

Brother Jim: because their strength comes

Brother Jim: from God and they're ready to

Brother Jim: go.

Brother Jim: We pray.

Brother Jim: We pray because God.

Brother Jim: Prayer changes us.

Brother Jim: Now, this is important.

Brother Jim: Sometimes we think prayer is

Brother Jim: primarily about changing our

Brother Jim: circumstances.

Brother Jim: Lord, change this situation, Lord, fix this problem.

Brother Jim: Lord, change that person.

Brother Jim: Lord, open this door.

Brother Jim: And yes, we should bring our request to God.

Brother Jim: But sometimes God uses prayer to change something else.

Brother Jim: How about you and me?

Brother Jim: Have you ever been afraid to hear the truth that maybe you

Brother Jim: are the one who needs changed.

Brother Jim: Oh, come on now, Brother Jim.

Brother Jim: I'm perfect.

Brother Jim: Ask my wife.

Brother Jim: Prayer does not just change what is happening around us.

Brother Jim: Prayer can change what is happening within us.

Brother Jim: Have you ever entered prayer angry and left with peace?

Brother Jim: That's what I'm testifying about.

Brother Jim: That nine over eleven ordeal.

Brother Jim: I finally tasted God's true

Brother Jim: peace in my life and it was

Brother Jim: amazing.

Brother Jim: Ever been so mad at someone or a situation in your life?

Brother Jim: You were hotter than a jalapeno in a heat wave.

Brother Jim: I thought of Marty and Mary on that one.

Brother Jim: How about it?

Brother Jim: Have you ever entered prayer

Brother Jim: confused and left with

Brother Jim: direction?

Brother Jim: Have you ever entered prayer, worried and left feeling that

Brother Jim: somehow you could trust God?

Brother Jim: The circumstances may not have changed, but you changed in

Brother Jim: Philippians four six to seven, do not be anxious about

Brother Jim: anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with

Brother Jim: thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Brother Jim: And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

Brother Jim: will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Brother Jim: This verse reminds us to bring

Brother Jim: our request before God and God's

Brother Jim: peace guards our hearts and

Brother Jim: minds.

Brother Jim: Notice it does not necessarily

Brother Jim: say God immediately changes the

Brother Jim: circumstances.

Brother Jim: It says God gives peace.

Brother Jim: Church.

Brother Jim: Have you ever felt God's peace in your life?

Brother Jim: Have you ever really felt it?

Brother Jim: It is amazing.

Brother Jim: It is life, life changing and it is a testimony worth sharing.

Brother Jim: Is it not?

Brother Jim: Sometimes God changes the situation.

Brother Jim: Sometimes God changes us in a situation church.

Brother Jim: Have you ever had that happen to you?

Brother Jim: And allow me to be honest here for a moment as we close.

Brother Jim: Maybe the situation is not the problem.

Brother Jim: Our attitude and our heart just might be the problem.

Brother Jim: Our heart and our attitude.

Brother Jim: Well my goodness, brother Jim.

Brother Jim: What do you mean that my attitude and that my heart could

Brother Jim: be the problem.

Brother Jim: What nerve of you.

Brother Jim: Sometimes, my friends, the truth hurts.

Brother Jim: But guess what?

Brother Jim: And here it is.

Brother Jim: There's a rainbow in this.

Brother Jim: There's a smile.
