  1. One scholar did a study and he counted over 8,000

  2. different promises of God in the Bible. The Bible tells

  3. us that God is a promise-making and a promise-keeping God.

  4. He makes promises in the Bible to literally everybody. Now,

  5. God's promises are like a divine insurance policy. And in

  6. an insurance policy, when you know what's covered, then you

  7. don't sweat it when that circumstance happens in your life

  8. or that illness or that accident. When you know what's

  9. covered in the policy, you relax. On the other hand,

  10. if you don't know what's covered in the insurance policy,

  11. if you're ignorant of it, you worry. And one of

  12. the problems that we have today is people don't know

  13. the promises of God, so they spend a lot of

  14. time worrying. Today, we're gonna begin a new series that

  15. I'm calling God's Amazing Promises. And each week, we're gonna

  16. look at a different set of God's promises to you.

  17. We'll look at promises of God's help, promises of wisdom,

  18. of power, promises of forgiveness and guidance, promises of salvation

  19. and blessing and heaven, promises of guidance and salvation, of success,

  20. of victory, and many, many other benefits. You can't afford

  21. to miss this. this series on God's amazing promises. Now

  22. I want to begin the series by explaining three fundamental

  23. facts about the promises of God. The first one is this.

  24. God wants me to build my life on his promises.

  25. God doesn't want you to live a life built on

  26. petty rules. He wants you to live a life built

  27. on great promises. And we're going to look at many

  28. of these 8,000 promises in God's word to you, God's

  29. insurance policy to you. Number two, God makes two kinds

  30. of promises in scripture, and we're gonna look at both. First,

  31. he makes unconditional promises, and then he makes conditional promises.

  32. The unconditional promises, there are no strings attached, and no

  33. matter what you do, when God promises something unconditionally, it's

  34. going to happen. For instance, God has made an unconditional

  35. promise about the second coming of Jesus Christ. It's not

  36. gonna be dependent on anything that you or I do.

  37. That's an unconditional promise, and we'll look at many of those.

  38. But God also makes conditional promises. And these promises are

  39. based on your faith and your obedience. And God says,

  40. if you do this, then I will do this. It's

  41. not automatic. These promises aren't automatically yours. You have to

  42. meet a requirement or a circumstance or a condition. And

  43. if you don't meet that requirement, then you forfeit the promise.

  44. In other words, there's a premise to every promise that's conditional.

  45. And we'll look at what some of those conditions are. Now,

  46. the third thing I want to say about God's promises

  47. is that God makes promises for us for two different reasons.

  48. The first reason God gives us all these 8,000 promises

  49. in the Bible is to teach us to trust him

  50. in difficult times, to teach us to trust him in

  51. difficult times. The Bible says in Psalm 119 verse 50,

    Psalms 119:50

  52. when I'm hurting, I find comfort in your promises that

  53. lead to life. You know, if you weren't in ever

  54. bad circumstances, you wouldn't need the promises of God. If

  55. everything went great in your life, you wouldn't need the

  56. promises of God. Psalm 119, 114 says this, you, God,

  57. you're my refuge and shield, and your promises are my

  58. only source of hope. So as I said, if things

  59. always went great in your life and everything always looked great,

  60. you wouldn't need any promises. It's when the situation looks hopeless,

  61. that's when you need a promise of God. It's when

  62. situations seem like they're all falling apart, That's when you

  63. need a promise of God. So God first gives us

  64. promises to help us get us through the tough times

  65. in life, the difficult times, the times when we're hurting,

  66. or it just looks like maybe he's not even around.

  67. We hold on to his promises. The second reason God

  68. gives us promises is to make us more like him.

  69. We've talked about this many times that God's number one

  70. goal in your life is to make you like Jesus.

  71. One of the ways that he does that is through

  72. the promises in this book. The Bible says that God,

  73. in 2 Peter 1, verse 4, God has made great

    2 Peter 1:4

  74. and marvelous promises so that his nature would become part

  75. of us. Look at that verse again. God has made

  76. great and marvelous promises. Okay, all of these promises are

  77. in the Bible. So that, here's the reason, his nature

  78. would become part of us. The more you trust in

  79. God's promises, the more it's gonna change your life. That's

  80. why we're gonna do this series on God's amazing promises.

  81. You grow more like Jesus through God's promises. In fact,

  82. I'll just be real frank, you can't become like Jesus

  83. without trusting God's promises. The Bible tells us that God

  84. works in our lives through promises. Now, let me give

  85. you a quiz. Can you guess what subject in the

  86. Bible God makes more promises about than anything else? Can

  87. you guess what subject in the Bible God makes more

  88. promises about than anything else? It's not faith. It's not prayer.

  89. It's not love. It's not patience. It may surprise you

  90. that God makes more promises in the Bible about generosity

  91. or giving than anything else. Now, why is that? Why

  92. does God make more promises about being generous and being giving? Well,

  93. there's a couple reasons. First, because God is generous and

  94. he wants us to become like him. God wants his

  95. children to take on his qualities. Everything we have in

  96. life is because of the generosity and grace and giving

  97. of God. In John chapter one, Verse 16, I love

  98. this in the message prayer phrase. Look up on the screen.

  99. It says, we live off his generous bounty. Gift after

  100. gift after gift. Everything you and I have in life

  101. is because of God's generosity. So God just wants us

  102. to become like him. He wants his children to be

  103. like father, like son, like father, like daughter. Second reason

  104. God wants us to learn generosity is because giving is hard.

  105. And the reason giving is hard is because it challenges

  106. our selfishness. I don't want to give anything to anybody

  107. else or to God. I want to spend it all

  108. on me. So it's hard. So God gives rewards for

  109. us learning to be like him. God is a generous God.

  110. Everything you have in life is because of the generosity

  111. of God, and he wants us to become like him.

  112. So to kick off this series on God's amazing promises,

  113. we're going to start with the most frequent promises in

  114. the Bible, the promises about generosity. In fact, there are

  115. so many of them, we couldn't possibly cover the hundreds

  116. and hundreds of promises about this. So I've just picked

  117. out nine categories. That's all we have time for. We're

  118. gonna have to go through this fairly quickly anyway. But

  119. let me give you nine rewards that God promises to

  120. me and promises to you if we learn to be

  121. generous with our money, right? Let's look at nine different

  122. rewards that God promises to us if we learn to

  123. be generous with our money. As I said, I could

  124. give you hundreds of promises about generosity, but we only

  125. have time for these nine. We're gonna go through them

  126. pretty quickly, all right? So write these down fast. Number one,

  127. God promises good things will happen to me. when I'm generous,

  128. when I learn to give like God gives. God promises

  129. that good things will happen to me. Psalm 112 verse

  130. five says, good will come to him who is generous. Good,

  131. good things come to him who is generous. Proverbs 22

  132. verse nine, generous people will be blessed. That's a promise

  133. of God. So if you want God's blessing in your

  134. life and you want God's goodness in your life and

  135. you want good things to happen to you, the Bible

  136. says giving generosity unlocks the key. God promises that good

  137. things will happen to me when I'm generous. Number two,

  138. God promises my children will be blessed if I learn

  139. how to give like God gives. That's covered in Psalm

    Psalms 37:26

  140. 37 verse 26. It says there in the NIV translation,

  141. the godly are always generous. That's a mark of godliness.

  142. If you're not generous, you're not godly, because God is generous.

  143. The godly are always generous, and notice, their children will

  144. be blessed. Now I want you to notice that when

  145. you learn to be generous, when you learn to give

  146. the way God gives, that blessing not only blesses you now,

  147. good comes into your life, but God says it gets

  148. passed on to the next generation. Now do you want

  149. your kids to be blessed by God? Do you want

  150. the next generation in your family to be blessed? Then

  151. you need to learn how to be generous. I'm expecting

  152. God's blessing on my kids and on my grandkids because

  153. Kay and I have been generous all of our lives.

  154. We learned generosity early on. God says, I will bless

  155. your kids if you are generous. I know many of

  156. you use the Daily Hope devotionals as part of your

  157. regular Bible study. And so I want to share some

  158. exciting news. We've put 365 of the best devotionals into

  159. a brand new book that we're calling The Daily Hope Devotional, Purpose, Peace,

  160. and Promise for Every Day. This devotional book is designed

  161. with clear, practical, biblical teaching to help you make knowing

  162. God your number one priority. I believe it will help

  163. you stay focused on God throughout the day as he

  164. provides you with real purpose, lasting peace, and his unfailing promises.

  165. Imagine starting every day like that. This book is a

  166. great way to share the hope you have in Jesus

  167. with your friends, co-workers, and relatives. I hope you'll get

  168. a copy for everyone you know.

  169. Be sure and request your copy when you partner with

  170. Daily Hope to take the Word of God to a

  171. hurting world.

  172. Third promise of God. God promises he will bless my

  173. work and my business if I learn to be generous.

  174. Not just my family, but also my business. Let me

  175. show you a couple of verses about this. Proverbs 3

    Proverbs 3:9

  176. verse 9 says this. Honor the Lord by giving him

  177. the first part of all your income. We honor God

  178. by giving him the first part of all our income.

  179. That's called tithing, we'll talk about that later. But he

  180. says then, that was the premise, here's the promise. Then

  181. your barns will be filled to overflowing and your vats

  182. will overflow with the finest wines. Now I doubt any

  183. of you have a barn to fill or vats to

  184. fill with the finest wine. But let's put this in

  185. a cultural context. In the Bible times, Everybody was a farmer.

  186. Almost everybody was a farmer. So when you looked inside

  187. a person's barn and you looked inside their vats, that

  188. represented their business. It represented their investments. It represented their livelihood.

  189. And what God is saying here is if you learn

  190. to be generous, God says, I will bless your business.

  191. I will bless your work. I will bless your career.

  192. I will bless your investments. I will bless you. how

  193. you make a living. A verse that goes right along

  194. with that is Proverbs 11, 25 that says, a generous

  195. man will prosper, will prosper. A generous man will prosper

  196. and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Question,

  197. those of you who have your own business or your

  198. own store or your own shop, do you want your career,

  199. your business to prosper? Well, of course you do. Do

  200. you want your business to be more profitable? Of course

  201. you do. Well, if you want God's help in your business,

  202. not just your family, but in your business, you have

  203. to fulfill the premise of his promise. And God says,

  204. the person who is generous will profit, will be blessed

  205. in what he does. Let me show you another verse

  206. here on the screen. Deuteronomy chapter 15, verse 10. I

    Deuteronomy 15:10

  207. love this in the message. It says this, give freely.

  208. and give spontaneously. Okay, that's the premise. Don't have a

  209. stingy heart. The way you handle matters like this triggers

  210. God's blessing. Look at that on the screen. The way

  211. you handle matters. If you're generous with your money, you're

  212. not a stingy heart, it triggers God's blessing in everything

  213. you do, in all your work, that's your job, that's

  214. your business, and Ventures. Some of you are venture capitalists.

  215. Some of you are serial entrepreneurs. Do you want God's

  216. blessing to be triggered in your work, in your ventures,

  217. in everything you do? Well, the Bible says generosity triggers

  218. God's blessing on your work. These are amazing promises. God

  219. says good will come to you, your kids will be blessed,

  220. and your work, your career, your job will be blessed.

  221. Generosity triggers God's blessing on on your job. Let me

  222. give you a fourth promise. God's promises that if I

  223. learn to give like he does, I'll be happier. Now,

  224. everybody knows this except people with a stingy heart. You

  225. already know this already. Jesus said in Acts chapter 20

    Acts 20:35

  226. verse 35, Paul, or Lucas talking here, and he says,

  227. remember the words of our Lord Jesus himself who said,

  228. There is more happiness in giving than in receiving. You know,

  229. when I was a little kid, I honestly didn't believe

  230. that verse because I'd rather get Christmas gifts when I

  231. was a little kid than when I was older. I

  232. didn't want to give them, I wanted to get them.

  233. But that's a mark of maturity. And maturity comes when

  234. you realize that there's actually more happiness in giving than

  235. in receiving. So here's the fourth promise. If you learn

  236. to give generously, God says, you'll be happier. You'll be happier,

  237. you get your business blessed, you get your family blessed,

  238. your children blessed, and you get blessed, good will come

  239. to your life. Number five, God promises that if I

  240. learn to give like he does, generously, my influence will increase.

  241. My influence will increase. Here's another promise, Proverbs 11, 24.

  242. The message says this, the world of the generous gets

  243. larger and larger. The world of the stingy gets smaller

  244. and smaller. If you want your world to get larger,

  245. learn to be generous. If you want your world to

  246. get smaller and more compact and harder heart and build

  247. walls around you, then just be a stingy person. But

  248. if you learn to be generous, the Bible says the

  249. more generous you are, the larger and larger your world

  250. will get. I could give a personal testimony about this one,

  251. how that God teaching me generosity in my life actually

  252. expanded my influence into areas I never, ever thought would

  253. be possible, into fields and into countries and around the world,

  254. simply because I was faithful in little things, then God

  255. gave me more, and I was faithful in that, and

  256. God gave me more, and I was generous with that,

  257. and more and more, And I could tell you a

  258. personal testimony that this promise is true. Your world expands

  259. the more generous you become. All right, number six. God

  260. promises that if I learn to give like he gives,

  261. and if I learn to be generous, I will end

  262. up with more. This is part of the economy of God. Now,

  263. we don't give to get more. I don't give to

  264. get a blessing. I actually give to be a blessing.

  265. But the truth is, you can't out-give God. And God

  266. plays this little game and says, let's see who can

  267. out-give the other person. You give to me and I'll

  268. give to you and you give to other people and

  269. I'll give to you and we'll see who wins. God says,

  270. I promise you, and he says this over and over

  271. and over in scripture, that I will end up with

  272. more if I learn to be generous. Let me show

  273. you some verses. Luke 6, verse 38. These are the

    Luke 6:38

  274. words of Jesus himself. Jesus says, give and it will

  275. be given back to you. And notice, in full measure.

  276. You don't get a little back. You get it all

  277. back and more. Give and it will be given back

  278. to you. In full measure. God's going to make sure

  279. he outgives you. Given it will be given to you

  280. in full measure. And what you receive will need to

  281. be pressed down and shaken together. What's that talk about? Well,

  282. let's say if you're getting grain and people are pouring

  283. grain in your sack and you've paid for a whole sack,

  284. you're going to shake it like this and then you're

  285. going to press it down so you can get the

  286. maximum amount of grain or coins or anything else into

  287. that sack. And he's saying, God wants to give you

  288. so much, you have to press it down, you have

  289. to shake it together to make more room because God

  290. wants to give you more than your sack can hold.

  291. He says, what you receive will need to be pressed

  292. down and shaken together, but it will still, notice, it

  293. will still run over and be poured into your lap.

  294. That makes me think of a lottery. It's just pouring in,

  295. it's pouring into your lap. And then he summarizes it.

  296. Jesus summarizes this, this way. The way you give to

  297. others is the way God will give to you. Whoa.

  298. We could just stop right there in the message and

  299. have you go home and think about this. That the

  300. way I give to others is the way God will

  301. give to me. God is waiting for me to be generous.

  302. He wants me to prime the pump. Why? Because he

  303. wants me to learn to be like him. I can't

  304. be like Christ without giving. God so loved the world

  305. that he gave. You've heard me say this many times.

  306. You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.

  307. You spell love G-I-V-E. God so loved the world that

  308. he gave. And so if we're going to be loving,

  309. then we've got to learn to be giving. We've got

  310. to learn to be generous. So he says, Give and

  311. it will be given to you, and the way you

  312. give to others is the way God will give to you.

  313. That's promise. And he says, if you're generous, God will

  314. give you more than you can handle. Let me show

  315. you some other verses about this, that God, I'll get

  316. back more than I actually gave out. Proverbs 11, 24

  317. says this. Some people give generously and end up with more,

  318. while other people don't give what they should, and end

  319. up poor. That actually rhymes. Some people give generously and

  320. end up with more, and while others don't give what

  321. they should, they end up with being poor. He's saying,

  322. you are determining how much I can bless your life.

  323. Proverbs 19, verse 17 says this. If you're a businessman,

    Proverbs 19:17

  324. you need to star and circle this verse. Being generous

  325. to the poor is like lending to the Lord, and

  326. God will pay you back for what you've done. He's

  327. saying that giving is an investment, that when you try

  328. to give it away, God says, I'm going to pay

  329. you back. He says, when you're generous to the poor,

  330. it's like lending to the Lord, and God will pay

  331. you back. In one of the translations of this verse,

  332. it says, and God pays great interest on your loan.

  333. It's like loaning to the Lord. So you're not really

  334. giving that money away because God says, I'm gonna pay

  335. you back with interest. Giving is an investment. Number seven,

  336. in the promises of God about giving and generosity. God

  337. promises that if I learn to give like God tells

  338. me to give, God promises to meet all my needs.

  339. Now that just sounds too good to believe. It just

  340. sounds too good to be true. But over and over

  341. and over in scripture, God says, if you'll put me

  342. first in your money, and if you'll learn to be

  343. generous and not tight-fisted, not tight-wad, open-handed, open-hearted, I will

  344. meet all your needs. Philippians chapter four, verse 17 and 19,

  345. Paul says this, I want you to have the good

  346. that comes from giving. Circle that, I want you to

  347. have the good that comes from giving. The whole reason

  348. I'm teaching this message is because I love you, and

  349. I want you to have the good that comes from giving.

  350. I know the good that comes from giving. I've been

  351. doing it all my life. I've been blessed all my

  352. life because I've learned the good that comes from giving.

  353. Most of you know Kay and I are reverse pilers.

  354. We give away 91% of our income, and we live

  355. on 9%. Now, we didn't start there, but how are

  356. we able to live that way? The good that comes

  357. from giving, God just says, I'm not going to let

  358. you out give me. And the Bible says this, I

  359. want you to have the good that comes from giving.

  360. My God will use his wonderful riches in Christ Jesus

  361. to give you everything you need. Wow. Do you believe

  362. that verse? If you don't, you ought to just take

  363. an exacto knife and cut it out of your Bible.

  364. Jesus said, I will make sure you get everything you need. Now,

  365. notice he didn't say, I'll give you all your greed.

  366. He says, I'll give you everything you need. There are

  367. some things I think I need that I really don't need.

  368. God says, all your needs will be met. Doesn't say

  369. all your greeds, all your desires, all your lusts will

  370. be met. You know, it's not like, well, I want

  371. a Rolls Royce. That's not a need. But he said,

  372. I will give you everything you need if you learn

  373. to be generous. Look at a couple other verses. Again,

  374. there's so many of these verses. I had to cram

  375. them on your outline and still left out so many.

  376. Proverbs 28, verse 27 says this. He who gives to

    Proverbs 28:27

  377. the poor will lack nothing. Circle that, will lack nothing.

  378. If you want to lack nothing in your life, emotionally, physically, spiritually, mentally,

  379. then you need to learn how to give to the poor.

  380. But he who gives to the poor will lack nothing,

  381. but he who closes his eyes to their needs will

  382. receive curses. When you're driving along and you come up

  383. to a stoplight and there's a homeless person on the side,

  384. do you just kind of keep looking forward and you

  385. close your eyes to what is on your side? The

  386. other night, Kay and I took our eldest grandchild, Kaylee,

  387. for her 16th birthday up to see Phantom of the

  388. Opera in L.A., And we turned under an underpass bridge.

  389. And I believe there were probably 20 people camped out

  390. in tents living under that. Every bone in my body

  391. wanted to stop right there. There were cars behind us

  392. and we couldn't because I'm going, I can't turn my

  393. eye to this. And I know that Kay, every time

  394. she sees a homeless person, she stops, she rolls down

  395. her window and she helps them out. That's one of

  396. the reasons God has blessed us. is because he says

  397. you'll lack nothing. But if you close your eyes to

  398. the needs of the poor, your life's cursed. I know
