  1. Now imagine if you had been given the opportunity to

  2. sail over to America on the Mayflower. I'm sure you

  3. would be excited about that, going to a new country,

  4. starting in a new land, building a new home, but

  5. you would have no idea of the long-term impact of

  6. that small journey. Nobody on the Mayflower could have imagined

  7. that what they were starting was the greatest and most

  8. powerful nation in the history of the planet Earth. Nobody

  9. would have known that. You see, we never get to

  10. see in advance the impact of our destinies. God doesn't

  11. show us what our lives are going to do in

  12. the future for future generations. But we do know some things.

  13. For instance, we know that your destiny is determined by

  14. God and that destiny is set when he decided both

  15. when and where you would be born and where you

  16. would live. The Bible says in Acts 17, 26, God

  17. determines the time set for each of us and the

  18. exact places where we should live. So when God decided

  19. when you would be born and where you would be born,

  20. that determined a lot of your destiny. For instance, it

  21. is not your destiny to invent the telephone. It's already

  22. been invented. It is not your destiny to fight the

  23. Peloponnesian Wars. They've already been fought. It's not your destiny

  24. to go to the moon. That's already been done. So

  25. when God chose when and where you would be born,

  26. that had a lot to do with what your destiny

  27. would involve. We do know that our destinies are entwined

  28. with each other, that you weren't made simply to live

  29. for yourself. You weren't made simply to live on your

  30. own for your own goals. Romans 14, seven says this,

  31. for none of us lives to himself alone and none

  32. of us dies to himself alone. In other words, your

  33. destiny is connected to my destiny and my destiny is

  34. connected to your destiny because we know each other. We're

  35. in the same church family. We do know another thing

  36. about your destiny that you will miss it if you

  37. choose to go with God's plan, go with your plan

  38. instead of God's plan for your life. You will miss

  39. your destiny if you choose to follow what you want

  40. to do with your life rather than what God designed

  41. you to do, what God has called you to do.

  42. The Bible says in Hebrews 12, 15, look after each

  43. other so that none of you will miss out on

  44. the special favor of God. Now as your pastor and

  45. as somebody who loves you deeply, part of my job

  46. is to make sure you don't miss out. Part of

  47. my job as a spiritual leader is to make sure

  48. you don't miss out on the destiny that you were

  49. created for. And part of your destiny in life is

  50. to play a role in God's larger plan in history.

  51. We're all just cogs in a wheel. And there were

  52. people before us, so there would be people after us.

  53. And we are on the scene for 60, 70, 80,

  54. maybe 100 years at the most. And then somebody else

  55. takes the baton and moves on. What is that overarching

  56. goal of history that God has a part for you

  57. to play in? Well, the answer is real simple. The

  58. Bible tells us that all of history is moving toward

  59. a climax. And that climax is this. God is preparing

  60. a family that's going to live with him forever in eternity.

  61. It's the entire reason the universe exists. If God hadn't

  62. wanted a family, he wouldn't have set up the universe,

  63. set up the galaxy, set up the human race, given

  64. us a choice to choose whether we're going to be

  65. in the family or not, whether we're going to love

  66. him or not, whether we're going to trust and obey

  67. him or not. None of that would have happened. But

  68. everything the Bible says that's happening in life and in

  69. history is because God is creating a family to live

  70. with him forever, a forever family of his children. And

  71. the Bible says that part of our goal is to

  72. make that message known to everybody so that those who

  73. are going to choose to be a part of that

  74. family forever can choose to be a part of it.

  75. Look at this verse, Matthew 24, 14. The good news

  76. about God's kingdom, that's his family that's going to be forever,

  77. is will be preached throughout the whole world so that

  78. all nations will hear it. And then the end will come.

  79. So when's history going to end? It's going to end

  80. when everybody that's going to be a part of God's

  81. family has gotten in. And only God knows that amount.

  82. But he says this good news is going to be

  83. shared everywhere around the world, to every corner of the world,

  84. to every crevice of the world, to every people group,

  85. to every tribe, nation, language. And when all of the

  86. people that God knows already in advance who are going

  87. to decide for him have decided, history is going to

  88. end and we move into the next phase, which is eternity. Now,

  89. the Bible tells us in the book of Revelation, which

  90. is the last book in the Bible, chapter 5, That

  91. one day around the throne in heaven, there will be

  92. people gathered for God's family from every nation, every people,

  93. every language, and every tribe. That there's going to be

  94. somebody represented from every nation, every language, every tribe, every

  95. people group in the world that's going to be gathered

  96. in God's family in eternity. Here's the problem. There are

  97. still 3,400 tribes that don't have any Christians in them.

  98. that don't have any church in them. They are all

  99. small tribes or people groups, anywhere from 5,000 people to

  100. at the most 100,000 people. This is the final frontier.

  101. Even 2,000 years after Jesus Christ came to earth and

  102. gave us the good news and died on the cross

  103. for us, there are still 3,400 small tribes and many

  104. of them are out in the middle of nowhere. And

  105. so the clock is ticking. And in Matthew 16, verse 15,

    Matthew 16:15

  106. Jesus said this, I want you to go to all

  107. the world and tell the good news to everyone everywhere. Now,

  108. who's supposed to do that? Those of us who know.

  109. Once you know the good news, you're supposed to share

  110. it with your family, with your friends, with everybody around you,

  111. and make sure that it gets to everybody, every corner,

  112. every crevice, so that there'll be people from every tribe,

  113. every nation, every language sharing In heaven, in eternity, there's

  114. a church in every one of those 3,400 tribes who

  115. don't have one yet. So they can hear the good

  116. news that they're not an accident, that they're made to

  117. last forever, that Jesus died for them, that there's a

  118. purpose to their life, that life has meaning and significance,

  119. that their past can be forgiven, they can have a

  120. purpose for living, they can have a home in heaven,

  121. all of the good news. And that is our goal.

  122. The Bible says that every person has a calling. Every

  123. person has a destiny. Every person has a life mission.

  124. Every person has a vocation. They're all different. We all

  125. have a different vocation. We all have a different task

  126. in life. We all have a different purpose. We all

  127. have a different ministry. We all have a different calling

  128. in life. But everybody is called. So fortunately, God made

  129. us all different, gives us different vocation, different callings. God

  130. designed me. He designed you for a unique calling. You

  131. were custom shaped for a life mission. You were custom

  132. shaped for a legacy, for a destiny. If you don't

  133. do what God made you to do with your life,

  134. it won't get done. Because somebody else isn't going to

  135. pick it up. You were uniquely wired. You were uniquely shaped.

  136. That's why Paul says this there on your outline in

  137. Ephesians chapter four, I beg you, Paul says, I beg

  138. you to lead a life worthy of your calling for

  139. you have been called by God. How do I do that?

  140. How do I follow my calling? And I'm going to

  141. give you two examples of two very courageous people. One

  142. guy was named Caleb and the other guy was named Timothy.

  143. They lived over a thousand years apart from each other.

  144. But they both were called by God to do different things,

  145. but it took courage for them to do what God

  146. called them to do. Different generations, different time zones, even

  147. different locations. But they were different people. But they had

  148. the same call of God in that God called each

  149. of them. In the Bible, when you talk about generations,

  150. a generation is 40 years. So like 40 years in

  151. the wilderness, that's a generation in Bible times. Those of

  152. you who are over 40 are part of the Caleb generation.

  153. Those of you who are under 40 are part of

  154. the Timothy generation. God uses both. God needs both and

  155. wants to use both and wants to use you in

  156. a great way. So I want to tell you two

  157. stories this week. In the story of Caleb and the

  158. story of Timothy and show you six things you need

  159. to do in order to fulfill the life mission that

  160. you were wired for. The calling that you were created for.

  161. The purpose that you were designed for. Now the first

  162. is the story of Caleb. Moses leads the Jewish people

  163. out of 400 years of slavery in Egypt. And they

  164. cross this giant desert called the Sinai. And they come

  165. up to the area that God's going to give them,

  166. the nation of Israel, and it's called the Promised Land.

  167. And Moses says, okay, you guys, let's send in some

  168. spies to see what the land is like so we'll

  169. know what kind of battles we're going to have to

  170. fight and what it's worth. So they send in 12 spies.

  171. Moses sends 12 spies in to spy out the land

  172. of Israel, the Promised Land. And when the 12 spies

  173. come back, there's a minority report and a majority report.

  174. The majority report says, there's no way we can take

  175. this nation. It's filled with people who could whip our fannies.

  176. We're never going to be able to handle this, and

  177. we should just go back to Egypt. There was a

  178. minority report by two guys who said, we can do this,

  179. we can do this. And their names were Caleb and Joshua.

  180. By the way, because they were the only two who

  181. had faith to believe they could go into the promised land,

  182. God let an entire generation wander for the next 40

  183. years until that entire generation died off. And the only

  184. two people who were the original group who got to

  185. go into the promised land, who left Egypt, were Caleb

  186. and Joshua. And the only reason they got to go

  187. in is because they had enough faith to believe. But

  188. they came back with a positive report. What do we

  189. learn from the life of Caleb about your life today? Calling,

  190. three things, write these down. Number one, the first thing

  191. we learn is if I'm going to follow my calling,

  192. number one, I must believe I can do it even

  193. if I'm scared. That's the first step of fulfilling your

  194. life mission in life. I must believe I can do

  195. it even if I'm scared to death. This is the

  196. faith factor. In Numbers chapter 13, we have the story.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  197. It says, the spies who'd gone in to see the

  198. promised land came back and they gave this account to Moses.

  199. We went into the land to which you sent us

  200. and it does indeed flow with milk and honey. In

  201. other words, it's a very bountiful, it's a very fruitful,

  202. wonderful place. In fact, here's the fruit and they brought

  203. back some grapes and stuff. But, and here's the big but,

  204. but the people who live there in the promised land

  205. are powerful and the cities are fortified. And they're very large.

  206. And we even saw the descendants of Anak there. And

  207. the Amalekites lived there and the Hittites and the Jebusites

  208. and the Amorites and the Canaanites. And these guys started

  209. having a panic attack. Now they said, we went into

  210. this country that God's supposed to give us, and it's

  211. a great country, but it's full of big cities, and

  212. they're walled cities, and there are giants there. There were

  213. people from the descendants of Anak. The Anak people were very,

  214. very tall, and in the eyes of the Hebrews... They

  215. looked like giants. And he said, it's giant cities with

  216. giant problems with giant people, and we look like grasshoppers.

  217. So they're scared to death. Only one guy has the

  218. courage to speak up, and his name is Caleb. And

  219. he says, I believe I can do it even if

  220. I'm scared to death. Look at the next verse, verse 30,

  221. Numbers 13. Then Caleb silenced the people before God, before Moses,

  222. and said, we should go up and take possession of

  223. the land for we can certainly do it. Now I

  224. want you to circle two phrases. We should and we can.

  225. Circle that. We should and we can. Those are the

  226. two essential attitudes for you fulfilling your calling in life.

  227. You gotta say, I should do it and I can

  228. do it. That's the starting point. I should do it

  229. and I can do it. Once I know what God

  230. wants me to do with my life, I should say,

  231. I should do it and I can do it. That's

  232. exactly what Caleb said. Now, why was Caleb so confident?

  233. Because he trusted God. Look at the next verse. Caleb said,

  234. the Lord will lead us into that land and he

  235. will give us that fertile land. Don't turn against the Lord.

  236. Don't be afraid of the people in that land. We

  237. will chew them up and spit them out. They have

  238. no protection, but the Lord, the Lord is with us.

  239. So the first thing we find is that if I'm

  240. gonna be what God wants me to be, I've got

  241. to say, okay, God, I don't know what to do,

  242. but I'm gonna trust you, and I believe that you

  243. can do it through me. I'm gonna believe that I

  244. can do it even if I'm scared. Here's the second

  245. thing you gotta do if you're gonna fulfill the calling

  246. God has on your life. I must be willing to reject,

  247. willing to reject negative advice. I must be willing to

  248. reject negative advice if I'm going to follow my calling

  249. in life. There will be people who are negative against it,

  250. and you can expect that. In fact, to fulfill your

  251. calling in life, you're probably going to have to ignore

  252. popular opinion. That's why so few people actually fulfill the

  253. calling that God has for their life. You gotta be

  254. willing to go against proper opinion. Look what happened. Numbers 14,

  255. verses two. All the Israelites grumbled and they said, if

  256. only we had died in Egypt or in the desert,

  257. why is the Lord taking us to a new country

  258. only to die in battle? Let's go back to Egypt

  259. where we all lived all our lives. You understand what

  260. they're saying? They said, we prefer safety in slavery. And

  261. I'll go back to being enslaved by my addiction, by

  262. my relationships, by my past, by my guilt? What slavery

  263. are you willing to go back to rather than go

  264. forward and take a risk? Caleb had uncommon courage. He said, okay,

  265. I'm going to believe I can do it, even if

  266. I'm scared, and I'm going to be willing to reject

  267. negative advice. In fact, it wasn't just negative advice. Look

  268. at the next verse, Numbers 14.10 says this, The whole

  269. community began to talk about stoning Joshua and Caleb. They're

  270. going to kill the two guys. And this is like

  271. not this kind of stoned. It's real stones. Okay, okay.

  272. The whole community began talking about stoning Joshua and Caleb.

  273. But the glorious presence of the Lord appeared and to

  274. all of Israel from the tabernacle. You know, I love

  275. the fact that God's presence saved Caleb and Joshua. And

  276. that'll happen in your life too. Pioneers always get the

  277. arrow in the back. You've got to be willing to

  278. reject negative advice if you're going to go after God's

  279. calling on your life. Third thing, I must believe it's

  280. never too late. If I'm going to follow my calling

  281. in life, what God wants me to do with the

  282. The 12 spies went into the land. They said, it's

  283. too hard. It's a great place, but we can't take on.

  284. So God says, because of your unbelief, you can all

  285. wander around the desert for another 40 years. And he

  286. let that entire generation die because that generation wouldn't believe.

  287. But Caleb believed and Joshua believed and they got to live.

  288. And now they come back 40 years later. Caleb's now

  289. 85 years old on the second chance. And notice here,

  290. Joshua chapter 14. They come up to the promised land.

    Joshua 14 chapter mention

  291. 40 years later, Caleb says, I'm now 85 years old.

  292. But I'm still as strong today as the day Moses

  293. sent me out. And I'm just as ready to fight

  294. as I was then. So give me the mountain region.

  295. That's the most difficult area. Give me the mountain region

  296. that the Lord promised me that day long ago. I

  297. love that. Give me the mountain region. And he says,

  298. you know the giants live there and the cities are

  299. large with great walls. You know what I love about Caleb?

  300. He's saying, give me the toughest spot. Give me the

  301. biggest assignment. Give me the hardest city. Give me the

  302. place with the biggest giants. Give me the mountain region.

  303. I don't want some easy place. I know I'm 85

  304. years old, but I still got it in me. And

  305. I believe it's never too late. Some of you think

  306. it's time to hang it up, and I'm telling you,

  307. get it down, dust it off. The best is yet

  308. to come. You're part of the Caleb generation. Okay? You're

  309. part of the Caleb generation. You think God's going to

  310. let you live 30 years just to play golf? Are

  311. you kidding me? You know, there's a word that's not

  312. in the Bible. It's called retirement. Now, you may stop working,

  313. but you still keep serving the Lord. Right? Maybe in

  314. earlier years you were paid to good, now you're good

  315. for nothing. And the fact is, you have more wisdom,

  316. you have more experience, and God does not want to

  317. waste that. And Caleb, at 85 years old, was beginning

  318. the greatest life mission of his life. The third thing

  319. is I want to follow my calling. I got to

  320. believe it's not too late. I can get started even

  321. if I'm right on the edge or in retirement. Now,

  322. the next three steps, I want to go from the

  323. opposite generation, from Timothy. Timothy was a very young man,

  324. the opposite of Caleb. He was a very young man.

  325. He was just getting started. He had traveled with Paul,

  326. and then Paul says, I'm going to send you to

  327. a new city called Ephesus, and I'm going to have

  328. you help start a church there. and help grow it.

  329. And you're going to help lead it. And Timothy, don't

  330. be scared. Timothy had a problem with panic attacks. Timothy

  331. had a problem with fear. And God had to say

  332. to him, God has not given us a spirit of fear,

  333. but power, love, and a sound mind. And so what

  334. do we learn from the life of Timothy? The younger generation,

  335. what do we learn from him? Well, write these down.

  336. If I'm going to fulfill my calling, I must develop

  337. the gifts God gave me. I've got to develop the

  338. gifts that God gave me. Let me read you a

  339. couple of verses. First Timothy chapter four, verses 12 and 14, 15.

  340. Do not let anyone look down on you because you

  341. are young. Now this is talking to you who are

  342. under 40 here. Don't let anybody look down on you

  343. because you're young. But be an example for the believers

  344. in your speech, in your conduct, in your love, your

  345. faith and purity. And do not neglect. Do not neglect.

  346. That means develop the spiritual gift that is in you.

  347. Practice these things. What does practice mean? You do it

  348. over and over so you can get good at something.

  349. Practice these things. Devote yourself to them. Develop your talents.

  350. Devote yourself to them in order that your progress may

  351. be seen by all. 2 Timothy chapter 1. Paul says

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  352. this to Timothy, fan into flame the gift of God

  353. which is in you. Fan into flame, in other words,

  354. develop it, make the most of it. Through the laying

  355. on of hands, God did not give us a spirit

  356. of timidity, but a spirit of power and love and

  357. a self-discipline. Now let me talk to those of you

  358. who are under 40. As a young adult, your number

  359. one responsibility before God is to develop your talent. That's

  360. the number one thing God wants you to do. to

  361. cultivate your talent that he's going to use in the

  362. rest of your life. Develop the gift God has given me.

  363. The second thing you're supposed to do is the next thing.

  364. Write this down. Refuse to be distracted. Refuse to be

  365. distracted by other things. If God has put a call

  366. on your life, if God wants to use your life

  367. for his purpose and his glory, don't you dare get

  368. distracted by things that are second in importance. God tells

  369. Timothy in 1 Timothy chapter four, keep a close watch

  370. on yourself and on your teaching. Stay true to what

  371. is right and God will save you and those who

  372. hear you. Easiest thing to do as young adults, get sidetracked.

  373. Get sidetracked by building your business, building your family, building

  374. your career, building your savings. And there's more things to

  375. distract you than anything before. You can waste your life

  376. watching Gangnam Style YouTube videos. And all a bunch of

  377. other things. But you've got to refuse to be distracted.

  378. 1 Timothy 6. Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you.

  379. That's your calling. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who

  380. oppose you. with their so-called knowledge. Some people have wandered

  381. off from the faith by following such foolishness. Don't get

  382. involved in these online discussions that just waste your time

  383. and energy and distract you. I've got a plan for

  384. your life. I've got a purpose for your life, Timothy.

  385. I've got a calling on your life. Develop the gift

  386. that God gave you and refuse to be distracted. Stay single-focused.

  387. And this is what God is saying here. Develop your gift.

  388. Refuse to be distracted. And number three, number six is

  389. Give God my very best. That's the third thing I do.

  390. I give God my very best. If I want to

  391. fulfill the purpose that God has given me, if I

  392. want to follow my calling, I believe I can do

  393. it even if I'm scared. I'd be willing to reject

  394. negative advice. I believe it's never too late. I develop

  395. the gift God's given me. I refuse to be distracted

  396. and I give God my very best. First Timothy six

  397. says this. Run your best in the race of life

  398. and win eternal life for yourself for it was to

  399. this life that God called you. Circle the word called.

  400. You are called by God and you are to run

  401. your best in the race of life so you win

  402. the race. It was to this life that God has

  403. called you. Now these are two very, very different men

  404. and they're a thousand years apart and one of them's

  405. old and one of them's young. And everybody here today,

  406. you're either part of the Caleb generation or you're part

  407. of the Timothy generation. But the principles are the same

  408. to fulfill your calling in life. What was the impact

  409. of these two men? Very different men. What was the

  410. impact on them? Philippians 2.20, Paul says about Timothy, I

  411. have no one else like Timothy. Anybody ever else said

  412. that about you? Can you imagine a greater epitaph? Say,

  413. there was nobody in the world like that person. They

  414. were so focused. They were so God's person. That was

  415. God's man. That was God's woman. They were so focused.

  416. There was nobody else like them. They were so committed

  417. to the call of God on their life. Nobody could

  418. distract them. Nobody could discourage them. They gave God their best.

  419. They developed their gifts. And they said, I don't care.

  420. I'm going to make it work. I have nobody like Timothy.

  421. What does God say about Caleb? The next verse, God said,

  422. because my servant Caleb has a different spirit. In other words,

  423. there's nobody like him either. He's different from everybody else.

  424. He's following my calling and he follows me wholeheartedly. I

  425. will give him the land he went to and his

  426. generations following will inherit it. That's a legacy. Let me

  427. talk to both generations at once right now. You may

  428. be in the Timothy generation, or you may be in

  429. the Caleb generation, but God still has a call on

  430. your life. And God says, I want to be able

  431. to say this about you. There was nobody else like them.

  432. And they followed me so wholeheartedly. I blessed their family

  433. for multiple generations after that. Wouldn't you like to have

  434. your kids, your grandkids, your great-grandkids, and your great-great-great-grandkids being

  435. blessed because of your commitment to Christ? I'm the fourth

  436. generation in a long line of dedicated Christians. I am

  437. reaping the spiritual benefit of my father and my mother

  438. and my grandfathers and grandmothers and great-grandfathers. And I'm still

  439. reaping the benefits of prayers that they prayed. Say, man,

  440. I wish I had that heritage. You be that heritage.

  441. You start it. So that four generations from today, somebody's

  442. saying about you, they started a thing, and I am

  443. being so blessed today because of my great-grandmother. That's you.

  444. Or my great-grandfather. That's you. They followed their calling. They

  445. were a Caleb. They were a Timothy. They had impact

  446. and legacy in the world. This is my life verse,

  447. Acts 13, 36. David served... God's purpose in his generation

  448. and then he died. Now friends, that is the finest

  449. definition of a successful life you'll ever find anywhere. I

  450. want it put on my tombstone when I die. That

  451. I served God's purpose in my generation, then I died.

  452. I wanted people to be able to say that about

  453. you when you die. That you served God's purpose in

  454. your generation and then you died. You served God's purpose,

  455. that which never changes, but you did it in your generation,

  456. that which is constantly changing. You did that which is eternal,

  457. but you did it in a relevant way. You did

  458. the timeless in a timely way. You served God's purpose.

  459. You fulfilled your calling in your generation, whether it's the

  460. Timothy generation or it's the Caleb generation. Then you died.

  461. Who wants to be around here anyway after God's through

  462. with us? We're going to heaven where we're meant to

  463. be forever and ever and ever. But if you're alive

  464. and you're still breathing, God did not put you here

  465. on earth to watch TV and to blow your life

  466. and just do nothing. If you're alive, he wants you

  467. to serve his purpose in your generation. You say, Rick,

  468. I don't have what it takes. Yes, you do. Yes,

  469. you do. Whether you're Caleb... And you're old or you're

  470. Timothy and you're young. You have what it takes because

  471. Christ is in you. The last verse says this, faithful

  472. is he who calls you and he is also will

  473. bring it to pass. God does not call the equipped.

  474. God equips the called. He calls you, then he gives

  475. you the ability to do it.
