  1. Well, amen and good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  2. Whenever I preach, I'm always very reticent to draw any attention to myself, which is, I know, a little ironic because I'm standing up here and you're listening to me.

  3. But I don't want you to pay a whole lot of attention to me. I want to draw your attention to the text that we're in.

  4. And so that's why I wear the same jacket every Sunday. It's not because I don't want to own multiple jackets.

  5. It's because I see no need to, and I just want to be kind of boring for God's glory.

  6. I just want to get up and preach and have you hear God's Word preached.

  7. So sometimes when there's something about me that might be distracting, I don't know if I should draw attention to it or not draw attention to it.

  8. And so this morning I'm going to draw attention to something that perhaps is distracting, and maybe not.

  9. Thank you for those of you who have asked. Maybe you haven't noticed.

  10. But I have a pretty decent gash on my cheek this morning. I don't know if you can see or not on my cheek here.

  11. Because this week I got into a fight with a rather obtuse pry bar that cared nothing about the opinion I was sharing with it.

  12. And to my shame, it drew first blood, and I don't think I hurt it at all.

  13. So that's what's happening with my cheek. Again, thank you for those of you who asked. All is well with me.

  14. We have been working our way through John's gospel account.

  15. Last week we concluded chapter 11.

  16. But before preaching verse by verse, the beginning of chapter 12, I want to take a unique break.

  17. I've been planning on doing this for some months now.

  18. For our time together, you're going to need two things. Your Bible. You already turned to chapter 12, I hope.

  19. And we're going to spend a bit of time there eventually.

  20. And number two, you're going to need that bulletin that was handed to you on your way in.

  21. I don't always, in fact, I rarely include any notes within the notes section of your bulletin.

  22. But in this case, I have, and they will be very helpful for you to follow what I am saying.

  23. I think you might be entirely lost if you don't have that opened up in front of you.

  24. I want us to take a unique break to consider broadly the literary structure of John.

  25. If you've been with us in our study, this concept will not be new to you.

  26. So, why, you might ask, take a step back from the book to consider it as a whole.

  27. We've been talking about chiastic literary structure almost every week that we've been in John.

  28. So, why look at it as a whole is the question that's in front of us.

  29. I hope doing this is going to elicit three responses for you.

  30. So, here's my answer to that question.

  31. Number one, I hope it'll elicit in you humility.

  32. This book is brilliantly constructed.

  33. And while we believe in the inspiration of the Bible,

  34. that is, in this case, the Holy Spirit worked through the pen of John,

  35. we believe that it was breathed out by God through the pen of John,

  36. we do not believe this happens apart from the author's experience,

  37. cultural background, education, intellect, etc.

  38. That inspiration uses the personality of the individual.

  39. So, John the Apostle, formerly John the Fisherman,

  40. was a brilliant man,

  41. which I find should humble us.

  42. We are not the smartest people to ever live.

  43. I think that John would have run circles around every single one of us intellectually.

  44. Further, grasping the complexity of a book like John

  45. should show us that none of us know our Bibles quite as much

  46. as we might think that we do.

  47. We've got a lifetime ahead of us, right?

  48. As long as the Lord tarries and He leaves us here,

  49. that we can study this Word and understand it more and more and more.

  50. So, I hope to work humility in us this morning.

  51. Secondly, I want to elicit a response of wonder.

  52. John wasn't alone, as I mentioned in writing of this Gospel.

  53. The Bible is God-breathed, and it is magnificent.

  54. We can spend the entirety of our lives studying this book,

  55. and we will not unpack all of its beauty.

  56. Now, it is true that the doctrine of the clarity of Scripture states

  57. that all that is necessary for life and godliness is clear in the Bible.

  58. We, yes and amen, that reality.

  59. But that's where a lot of people stop.

  60. They stop understanding it and mining its depths at that level.

  61. But this book is just amazing.

  62. It's amazing.

  63. Written by various authors across time.

  64. It contains such singular focus.

  65. It's just layered, layered, layered with awe.

  66. We truly worship an incredible God,

  67. and our study of His written Word is but a drop in the ocean of Himself.

  68. I am convinced that we will spend eternity enthralled by discovery of the person of God,

  69. and we get to begin with this book.

  70. We should just be amazed by it.

  71. When structure like this exists,

  72. when the connections are apparent to us,

  73. we just ought to stand in awe of it.

  74. So I hope to promote wonder in us this morning.

  75. And third, I hope to elicit attention.

  76. I want to draw your attention to what I believe,

  77. and I'm not alone in this,

  78. is the central phrase of the whole of John's Gospel.

  79. A central phrase.

  80. I believe he means for us to notice this central phrase

  81. and have it inform our reading and study of the rest of the book.

  82. And so I hope to grab your attention this morning.

  83. Now, I've mentioned taking a unique break to consider literary structure.

  84. I've mentioned a central phrase.

  85. If you've been with us, you know exactly what we're referring to.

  86. If you haven't been, I want to introduce you to a literary structure we called chiasms.

  87. Much of the Bible is chiastic.

  88. They're all over the place.

  89. They're not everywhere, but they are all over the place.

  90. It is a broadly employed mnemonic device

  91. used to help in the memorization of long texts.

  92. Often used by ancient peoples,

  93. this kind of structure to help people memorize things

  94. because they didn't have paper and pen readily available the way that we do.

  95. But it also served to drive particular points,

  96. to grant interpretive lenses to a text.

  97. So in your bulletin, I included a simple definition by a man named Jim Hamilton.

  98. And he is, I have called him the contemporary king of chiasms,

  99. which is chiastic and it alliterates.

  100. That's free for you today.

  101. But he says this,

  102. the word chiasm derives from the Greek letter chi,

  103. which looks like an X.

  104. The idea is that the first and last points match,

  105. as do the second and second to last,

  106. with as many in between as the author desires,

  107. hinging at a central turning point.

  108. Okay, so it's just that simple.

  109. And you'll be able to see what that looks like

  110. as I've included some notes for you in your bulletin as well.

  111. Before we proceed, let me lead us in a prayer.

  112. Father, we do ask that you would bless the preaching of your word this morning,

  113. even as we look at it in a broader sense.

  114. I pray that you would work in us humility and wonder,

  115. and that you would draw our attention to the saving work of Christ,

  116. that we would perhaps for the first time today,

  117. receive him as Savior and Lord.

  118. And if we already have, that we would relish him all the more.

  119. We humbly recognize that we cannot do this without your help.

  120. We need your spirit to work in us.

  121. And so we pray that you'll do this very thing.

  122. Amen.

  123. Okay, so firstly, I wanted to look at John chapter 1, verses 1 through 18.

    John 1:1–18

  124. You read this as a responsive reading earlier.

  125. And I want to do this because this is an undeniable chiasm.

  126. Even people who don't like the work of looking at chiastic structures in the Bible agree.

  127. All the scholars go, yep, we see it there.

  128. So you read it earlier.

  129. I'm not going to read it in its entirety to you.

  130. But you may have noted that it's a little bit odd in its structure.

  131. You get this mention of John, and then a departure from John,

  132. and then a return back to John once again.

  133. It's always read strange to me.

  134. I've always thought, man, the first chapter of John is a strange chapter.

  135. It's like he's forgetting things he wanted to say,

  136. and going back and filling in some details,

  137. and then going back to the thing.

  138. Like, whoopsie-daisy, I went off to John the Baptist.

  139. I better circle back around and say some things about Jesus,

  140. and then go back to John the Baptist.

  141. Like, he didn't have an eraser, and he just had no choice but to do that.

  142. I didn't really think any of that.

  143. But it just always read odd to me.

  144. Well, the reason it reads a bit odd is because it's a chiasm.

  145. So if you look, there, I put that in the bulletin for you.

  146. You'll notice I've demarcated things by A and A prime.

  147. So those two correspond with one another.

  148. So those beginning four verses, you see Jesus presented as light.

  149. He's coming from God, a representative of God.

  150. And then in that last portion, verse 16 through 18,

  151. no one has ever seen God, God the only Son who is at the Father's side.

  152. He has made him known.

  153. So you see him presented as light and then as glory come from God.

  154. Then very obviously, the B and the B prime.

  155. You have a man sent from God whose name was John.

  156. And then picking up in verse 15, John bore witness about him and cried out.

  157. There's that piece, John there, and then John picking back up again in verse 15.

  158. Then you have C and then C prime.

  159. Once again, the true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

  160. Verse 14, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  161. Again, light and glory.

  162. So the central piece of that is verses 10 through 13.

  163. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

  164. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

  165. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

  166. who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  167. There's the central turning point of this text.

  168. And what John is doing is he's setting up a theme that he's going to carry all throughout the book of receiving Jesus and rejecting Jesus.

  169. We see this over and over again, back to back to back.

  170. Chiastic structures again and again and again.

  171. Receiving Jesus, rejecting Jesus, receiving, rejecting.

  172. And he explains on what basis this happens.

  173. Why is it that some reject and some receive?

  174. Some are not born of God.

  175. God is building this case right at the beginning, right here.

  176. How is it that they come to faith in Christ?

  177. It's that they're born of God.

  178. God quickens them, makes them alive, births faith in them.

  179. And he's going to continue to argue this out all throughout the book.

  180. You can see it, I hope, right?

  181. So I gave you like a little, little tiny hint at a chiasm that I made up about Jim Hamilton.

  182. And now you're seeing it here in John in these first 18 verses.

  183. And can you see that X structure the way that it lays out before you?

  184. Right.

  185. I hope that you can.

  186. I hope you're with me.

  187. Now, let's take some time to look at the book as a whole.

  188. And I'm working you toward a point, right?

  189. So I'm flying through some things, but I'm working you toward a point.

  190. And that is that I want to draw your attention to the central phrase of the text.

  191. So if you look, I think you have to flip your page.

  192. I can hear pages flipping.

  193. I've enumerated the chapters.

  194. It starts broad and gets smaller.

  195. I did not AA prime demarcate at this time for the sake of space.

  196. But you'll notice, again, corresponding chapters in the entirety of the book.

  197. So chapter 1 corresponding to chapters 20 through 21.

  198. I would really encourage you to take some time to read these chapters.

  199. Read chapter 1, then read chapter 20 and 21, and notice the things that are happening in these places.

  200. Chapters 2 through 4 correspond with chapters 18 through 20.

  201. So you see from Cana to Cana, from garden to garden.

  202. This is where, in those chapters where Jesus talks about destroying the temple and raising it up in three days.

  203. And then in chapters 18 through 20, the temple, Jesus is crucified.

  204. And then he is raised on the third day.

  205. Chapters 5 through 11, you see Jesus' public ministry.

  206. He's among crowds.

  207. He's at feasts.

  208. Summary things.

  209. Chapters 12 through 17, he's in private.

  210. He's with his disciples.

  211. He's at a particular feast, the Passover feast.

  212. Chapter 11, narrowing the scope, verses 45 through 53.

  213. Caiaphas, the high priest that year, unknowingly prophesied

  214. that it's better that one man would die for the nation.

  215. And John explains to us what's meant by that.

  216. That he would die for the people of Israel who believe in him.

  217. And not only them, but for the nations.

  218. And then what do we see as a correspondence to that?

  219. Chapter 12, verses 12 through 19.

  220. The triumphal entry.

  221. Where he is proclaimed to be the Christ.

  222. The one who is going to deliver his people.

  223. Chapter 11, verse 54 through 57.

  224. Right there at the end of the chapter, this question is being asked.

  225. Will he come?

  226. Is Jesus going to show up to the Passover feast?

  227. And you see the Sanhedrin has put out an order.

  228. They're seeking to arrest.

  229. They want to know if he shows up.

  230. They want to arrest him.

  231. And we know that they've already decided that they're going to kill him at this point.

  232. And then the corresponding text is chapter 12, verse 9 through 11.

  233. Where he does in fact come.

  234. Right?

  235. He shows up.

  236. And there's a mention there of them seeking to kill Lazarus.

  237. Am I making sense?

  238. How it builds into a central point.

  239. The central text is chapter 12, verse 1 through 8.

  240. Where we see reject.

  241. This theme emerges of receiving Jesus as the Christ.

  242. And rejecting Jesus as the Christ.

  243. On one side of that, you have Mary.

  244. On the other side of that, you have...

  245. My brain just went totally blank.

  246. He has a name.

  247. Judith.

  248. Thank you so much.

  249. Somebody whispered it.

  250. I appreciate you.

  251. Okay.

  252. So that's where we're going to spend our time looking at this.

  253. Now we are, next week, Lord willing, we're going to look at this text more broadly.

  254. So some of the details.

  255. But here we're just, we're working the chiastic structure down to the central phrase.

  256. Okay.

  257. Now, we've spent some time.

  258. You've seen it on paper.

  259. And now you guys are chiastic professionals.

  260. So I did not include verses 1 through 8 because I want you to look at it yourself.

  261. So now you've got your Bibles open to John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  262. We're going to look at verses 1 through 8.

  263. I'm going to walk you through this and bring you to the central text.

  264. And then we'll talk a bit at length about that.

  265. Okay.

  266. So let me read it in its entirety.

  267. And then I'll go back and point things out.

  268. All right.

  269. So beginning in verse 1, chapter 12.

  270. Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

  271. So they gave a dinner for him there.

  272. Martha served and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.

  273. Mary, therefore, took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair.

  274. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

  275. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, he who was about to betray him, said,

  276. Why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?

  277. He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.

  278. And having charge of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

  279. Jesus said, Leave her alone so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.

  280. For the poor you will always have with you, but you do not always have me.

  281. All right.

  282. So beginning with verse 1, right?

  283. Jesus comes to Bethany.

  284. It's a suburb, essentially.

  285. It's a couple miles outside of Jerusalem.

  286. This is just before the triumphal entry that we'll read about soon.

  287. to the house of Lazarus, who he's just raised from the dead at the end of chapter 11.

  288. And his presence is there.

  289. He's there, right?

  290. He physically goes to this place.

  291. And then in verse 7, right, what does he say?

  292. The poor you will always have with you, but you do not always have me.

  293. So you see Jesus' presence being mentioned in both places.

  294. He's there physically, absolutely, but literarily he's being mentioned.

  295. He comes to that place.

  296. You do not always have me.

  297. Verse 2.

  298. So now we're going to step in in our chiastic structure.

  299. So this would be B, if you're demarcating it.

  300. So they gave a dinner for him there.

  301. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.

  302. And I suggest to you the corresponding verse would be verse 6,

  303. which is explaining what Judas said.

  304. He said this not because he cared about the poor,

  305. but because he was a thief,

  306. and having charge of the money bag,

  307. he used to help himself to what was put into it.

  308. So you have this dichotomy being set up between the two of them.

  309. You have Martha serving.

  310. She's serving others.

  311. And here you have Judas serving himself.

  312. So service of others corresponding to service of self.

  313. Then our next step in in our structure,

  314. verse 3, or C if you'd like to mark it out.

  315. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment

  316. made from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus

  317. and wiped his feet with her hair.

  318. So there's a mention of the expense of this ointment.

  319. I'm sure you can now see the correspondence to that.

  320. Judas gets upset.

  321. Why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii?

  322. Very expensive this sacrifice was and given to the poor.

  323. So the expense of the ointment mentioned in both of these places.

  324. Which brings me to the central phrase.

  325. And you may have noted that I did not read the end of verse 3.

  326. And here it is.

  327. I believe this is a central phrase to this piece of text

  328. and to the entirety of the book of John.

  329. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

  330. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

  331. We are so quick to read past details like this.

  332. Why in the world did John,

  333. the inspired by God himself,

  334. John, record this detail?

  335. It's striking to me that there was mention in chapter 11

  336. about the potential smell of Lazarus coming out of the tomb,

  337. but no explanation of that whatsoever.

  338. Never, right?

  339. Never a mention he might smell.

  340. Never does John give us any detail about that at all.

  341. And yet here he mentions

  342. the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

  343. Here is how the literary structure serves us.

  344. Between two corresponding responses,

  345. one, Mary kneels at the feet of Jesus.

  346. She has received him as the Christ.

  347. The other, Judas,

  348. misunderstanding everything going on

  349. and only concerned about his personal temporal gain.

  350. Again, we'll look at more next week.

  351. We have this phrase.

  352. There's these two different characters.

  353. One receiving, one rejecting.

  354. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

  355. Now, I did not discover the significance

  356. of what John is doing here on my own.

  357. Oh, how I wish I did.

  358. How I wish my mind was so saturated with the scripture

  359. that this detail left off the page at me.

  360. It did not.

  361. I have read past this little detail

  362. as if it was insignificant all the years.

  363. But at the same time,

  364. I'm thankful for the help I received from others

  365. and continue to,

  366. and in this case,

  367. Jim Hamilton pointing out this structure

  368. in this book.

  369. What are we to make of this?

  370. Just moments ago,

  371. Jake led in the reading

  372. of an Old Testament text

  373. that is printed in your bulletin

  374. this morning.

  375. It's like I do things sometimes by design.

  376. Leviticus chapter 16.

    Leviticus 16 chapter mention

  377. Look at that for me.

  378. Jordan mentioned it when he got up

  379. to lead the next song.

  380. It is argued that the entire Pentateuch,

  381. the first five books of the Bible,

  382. are chiasc,

  383. the whole thing,

  384. and that it centers

  385. on this text

  386. in Leviticus.

  387. The Day of Atonement.

  388. The entirety of those five books

  389. of the Bible

  390. have this central point

  391. in the middle

  392. of it all.

  393. I think that John knows this.

  394. I think that he's assuming

  395. his readers are going to know it.

  396. I think that if we really knew

  397. our Bibles,

  398. these connections would fire off

  399. and be made

  400. in our minds.

  401. What's happening here

  402. is just a blip.

  403. There's a lot of instruction

  404. about the Day of Atonement.

  405. But here it is

  406. giving instruction

  407. for the Levitical high priest,

  408. the first of whom

  409. was Aaron,

  410. and how he was to make sacrifice

  411. for the people of Israel

  412. on this particular day.

  413. So let's look at that text

  414. again together.

  415. I'm going to read it for us quickly

  416. and draw your attention

  417. to a few things.

  418. So Leviticus 16,

  419. starting in verse 11.

  420. Aaron shall present the bull

  421. as a sin offering for himself

  422. and shall make atonement

  423. for himself

  424. and for his house.

  425. He shall kill the bull

  426. as a sin offering

  427. for himself.

  428. And he shall take

  429. a censer full of coals of fire

  430. from the altar

  431. before the Lord

  432. and two handfuls

  433. of sweet incense

  434. beaten small

  435. and he shall bring it

  436. inside the veil

  437. and put the incense

  438. on the fire

  439. before the Lord

  440. that the cloud

  441. of the incense

  442. may cover the mercy seat

  443. that is over

  444. the testimony

  445. so that he does not die.

  446. Are you making the connection?

  447. Your brain

  448. making the connection?

  449. You're not awake

  450. if you're not.

  451. Verse 14.

  452. And he shall take

  453. some of the blood

  454. of the bull

  455. and sprinkle it

  456. with his finger

  457. on the front

  458. of the mercy seat

  459. on the east side

  460. in front of the mercy seat

  461. he shall sprinkle

  462. some of the blood

  463. with his finger

  464. seven times.

  465. Then he shall kill

  466. the goat

  467. of the sin offering

  468. that is for the people

  469. and bring its blood

  470. inside the veil

  471. and do with its blood

  472. as he did

  473. with the blood

  474. of the bull

  475. sprinkling it

  476. over the mercy seat

  477. and in front

  478. of the mercy seat.

  479. Thus he shall make

  480. atonement for the holy place

  481. because of the uncleanliness

  482. of the people of Israel

  483. and because of their transgressions

  484. all their sins.

  485. And so he shall do

  486. for the tent of meeting

  487. which dwells with them

  488. in the midst

  489. of their uncleanliness.

  490. No one may be

  491. in the tent of meeting

  492. from the time he enters

  493. to make atonement

  494. in the holy place

  495. until he comes out

  496. and has made atonement

  497. for himself

  498. and for his house

  499. and for all

  500. the assembly

  501. of Israel.

  502. So Aaron

  503. and then

  504. his progeny

  505. beyond him

  506. those who served

  507. as high priests

  508. would go

  509. one time of year

  510. into an inner place

  511. first in the tabernacle

  512. that's where the instructions

  513. are given here

  514. and then into the temple

  515. a place that was

  516. the most holy

  517. of places.

  518. One time of year

  519. this one man

  520. could go in

  521. and he had to follow

  522. very strict instructions

  523. or else he would be

  524. struck dead.

  525. One of the things

  526. that he had to do

  527. was bring in

  528. incense

  529. and burn it

  530. to fill

  531. the space

  532. to cover

  533. the mercy seat

  534. so that

  535. he does not

  536. die.

  537. He made an aromatic

  538. sacrifice

  539. in that moment

  540. and God withheld

  541. his wrath

  542. for all their

  543. uncleanliness

  544. as he goes

  545. about this process

  546. of making

  547. all of this

  548. sacrifice

  549. of blood.

  550. The incense

  551. the first thing

  552. I want to draw

  553. your attention to

  554. right?

  555. That other

  556. I really want you

  557. to see

  558. is the solitude

  559. of it.

  560. It's Aaron

  561. by himself

  562. going into

  563. this place

  564. and burning

  565. this incense

  566. filling this

  567. room

  568. with this

  569. fragrance.

  570. fragrance.

  571. So,

  572. back in

  573. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  574. 12

  575. and verse

  576. 3,

  577. as Mary

  578. kneels at

  579. the Lord's

  580. feet,

  581. receives him

  582. as the Christ,

  583. makes this

  584. lavish sacrifice

  585. of service

  586. to him.

  587. And on the

  588. other side

  589. of that

  590. you see

  591. Judas

  592. rejecting

  593. Jesus,

  594. wanting what

  595. he could get

  596. from Jesus'

  597. ministry,

  598. you see this

  599. phrase,

  600. the house

  601. was filled

  602. with the

  603. fragrance

  604. of the

  605. perfume.

  606. John means

  607. for us to

  608. see

  609. Mary

  610. worshiping

  611. in the

  612. very

  613. presence

  614. of God

  615. himself.

  616. Isn't that

  617. cool?

  618. That's the

  619. moment that's

  620. being recorded

  621. here.

  622. Mary has

  623. gone in

  624. behind

  625. the veil

  626. and she

  627. has made

  628. sacrifice

  629. and Jesus

  630. has welcomed

  631. her.

  632. The whole

  633. book

  634. is turning

  635. on this

  636. phrase,

  637. the house

  638. was filled

  639. with the

  640. fragrance

  641. of the

  642. perfume.

  643. Now,

  644. why does that

  645. matter,

  646. right?

  647. You could

  648. preach through

  649. the book

  650. of John

  651. and I

  652. think you

  653. could preach

  654. it faithfully

  655. and miss

  656. this.

  657. I'm sure

  658. without Jim

  659. Hamilton's help

  660. I would have

  661. definitely done

  662. that going

  663. through the

  664. gospel of

  665. John.

  666. But I

  667. think he's

  668. doing something

  669. particularly

  670. helpful for

  671. us.

  672. So,

  673. he says

  674. in John

    John 20:30

  675. chapter 20

  676. verse 30

  677. and 31,

  678. I've read

  679. this to you

  680. many times

  681. in our

  682. study so

  683. far,

  684. now Jesus

  685. did many

  686. other signs

  687. in the

  688. presence of

  689. the disciples

  690. which are

  691. not written

  692. in this

  693. book,

  694. but these

  695. are written

  696. so that you

  697. may believe

  698. that Jesus

  699. is the

  700. Christ,

  701. the Son

  702. of God,

  703. and that by

  704. believing

  705. you may

  706. have life

  707. in his

  708. name.

  709. You're

  710. probably

  711. very familiar

  712. with this,

  713. if you're

  714. at all

  715. familiar

  716. with

  717. John's

  718. gospel.

  719. He wrote

  720. these things

  721. down so

  722. that we

  723. can believe

  724. Jesus is

  725. the Christ

  726. and have

  727. life.

  728. And what

  729. we do

  730. so often

  731. when we

  732. think about

  733. life,

  734. we think

  735. about

  736. eternal

  737. life,

  738. as we

  739. put that

  740. in

  741. juxtaposition

  742. to

  743. eternal

  744. death.

  745. And there's

  746. some

  747. rightness

  748. in doing

  749. that,

  750. but we

  751. see it

  752. as an

  753. escape

  754. from

  755. punishment

  756. and

  757. nothing

  758. more.

  759. Nothing

  760. more.

  761. Justification.

  762. What an

  763. important

  764. doctrine.

  765. We want

  766. to stand

  767. on a hill

  768. and die

  769. for the

  770. doctrine of

  771. justification

  772. by grace

  773. alone,

  774. through faith

  775. alone,

  776. in Christ

  777. alone.

  778. How can you

  779. stand before

  780. God?

  781. How can you

  782. have the

  783. penalty of your

  784. debt expunged

  785. from you?

  786. How can you be

  787. given the

  788. righteousness of

  789. Christ so that

  790. you can stand

  791. before God

  792. and not be

  793. destroyed?

  794. That's the

  795. doctrine of

  796. justification.

  797. By grace,

  798. through faith,

  799. in Christ.

  800. It's an

  801. incredibly

  802. important

  803. doctrine.

  804. But I

  805. think our

  806. minds stop

  807. there.

  808. I think if

  809. we're not

  810. careful,

  811. it always

  812. ends

  813. there.

  814. But John,

  815. in saying

  816. that we're

  817. going to

  818. have life

  819. in Jesus'

  820. name,

  821. has already

  822. defined what

  823. life is

  824. a few

  825. chapters

  826. earlier.

  827. In chapter

  828. 17,

  829. verse 3,

  830. he says,

  831. and this

  832. is

  833. eternal

  834. life.

  835. that they

  836. know you,

  837. the only

  838. true God,

  839. and Jesus

  840. Christ,

  841. whom you

  842. have sent.

  843. Beloved,

  844. we are

  845. justified

  846. in order

  847. to be

  848. adopted,

  849. to be

  850. welcomed

  851. back into

  852. God's

  853. family,

  854. for to be

  855. back like

  856. in the

  857. garden before

  858. the fall

  859. when God

  860. walked with

  861. Adam in

  862. the cool

  863. of the

  864. day,

  865. to get

  866. to have

  867. him as

  868. our God

  869. and we

  870. be his

  871. people,

  872. to dwell

  873. with

  874. him.

  875. He's the

  876. end point,

  877. right?

  878. That restored

  879. relationship,

  880. to be

  881. reconciled

  882. back to

  883. God

  884. in

  885. Jesus

  886. Christ.

  887. And I

  888. think our

  889. minds stop

  890. too low.

  891. Justification,

  892. yes,

  893. teach it,

  894. defend it,

  895. stand firm

  896. on it,

  897. but so

  898. that

  899. we're

  900. adopted,

  901. so that

  902. we can

  903. be welcomed

  904. into the

  905. presence

  906. of God

  907. forever.

  908. The house

  909. was filled

  910. with the

  911. fragrance

  912. of the

  913. perfume.

  914. I think

  915. that John

  916. wants us

  917. to have

  918. this in

  919. our mind,

  920. right?

  921. The Lord

  922. of the

  923. universe,

  924. the word

  925. made flesh,

  926. dwelling with

  927. man,

  928. welcoming

  929. a woman

  930. who's willing

  931. to give

  932. everything

  933. that she

  934. might sit

  935. in his

  936. presence.

  937. Let's pray

  938. together.
