Homily | September 12, 2026 | Built On The Rock (Episode 267)

There are certain names that do more than identify a person.

The moment we hear them, an entire relationship comes alive.

The name of someone who raised us, the name of someone we loved, the name of someone whose voice we can still hear even after many years.

Today the church places upon our lips Mary, the mother of God.

The church does not honor Mary's name because it's magical.

We honor her name because of the woman who bore it, and because of the God to whom she gave herself completely.

In Scripture, a name identifies and expresses an identity.

It reveals something about who a person is and what that person has been called to do.

When we speak the name of Mary, we remember the woman whose entire life became a yes to God.

Mary listened and then she acted.

She received the word of God and then allowed that word to take flesh within her.

She did not merely call Jesus Lord, Lord, she built upon her life what God asked of her.

That's why Mary is the living image of today's gospel.

Jesus says that the wise person hears his words and acts upon them.

That person digs deeply and lays the foundation on rock.

Mary dug deeply.

Her foundation was not emotion, it was not comfort, it was not a life protected from suffering.

Her foundation was trust completely in God.

At the Annunciation she trusted before she understood.

At Bethlehem she trusted when there was no room.

In Egypt she trusted when her family became refugees.

At Cana she trusted when the answer was not clear yet.

And at Calvary she trusted when everything appeared to have been lost.

Mary's life did not remain standing because of no storms.

Her life remained standing because it had been built upon the rock.

That's the challenge for us today.

It's especially important after returning from a place like Mejigori.

It's incredible.

You could stand there all day long, and there are prayers around the clock.

A moment of spiritual grace can move the heart, but it must also change the life.

Feelings pass.

What remains is the decision to live differently.

Jesus tells us that a tree is known by its fruit.

The question is not simply, what did I feel?

The deeper question is, what fruit will this grace produce?

Will I pray more faithfully?

Will I forgive someone?

Will I return to confession?

Will there be more patience in my house, more charity in my speech, more courage in the way I live my faith?

If prayer does not begin to shape the way we live, then it remains only a beautiful experience.

Mary shows us something more.

In her prayer became obedience, and obedience bore fruit.

Saint Paul gives us an even stronger warning in the first reading.

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons.

We cannot belong to Christ at the altar while giving our hearts to everything that competes with him.

Idolatry is not only bowing down to statues, an idol is anything we allow to occupy the place that belongs to God and God alone.

That could be money, approval, comfort, resentment, ambition, pleasure, or the need to control everything.

Paul reminds us that receiving the Eucharist means participating in the life of Christ.

We do not merely receive something holy, we enter into communion with someone, because there is one bread, and we become one body.

Mary always leads us to that communion.

Her final recorded words in the gospel are not look at me, they are do whatever he tells you.

That's the holiness of Mary's name.

Her name never ends with herself, it always leads us to Jesus.

So when we pray, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.

Let us not say those words carelessly.

Let her name remind us of the life in which we have been called a life rooted in Christ, a life nourished by the Eucharist, a life in which prayer becomes obedience and grace produces fruit.

Spiritual feelings may fade.

Songs eventually grow quiet, but if we dig deeply and if we build our lives upon Christ, then when the river rises and the storms come, the house will remain standing firm.

Mary's whose name we honor today, teach us not merely to feel close to your Son, but to follow him.

Teach us not merely to hear his word, but to live it.

And when our faith is tested and our hearts grow tired, may the name of Mary remind us where she always stood, close to Jesus, faithful to the very end.
