  1. Well, good morning. As Alex said, if you have your Bibles, you can go ahead and open them up to the book of Psalm.

  2. I recently found out that I pronounced that incorrectly. I've heard that it's actually Sam or something like that.

  3. So you'll just have to forgive my pronunciation throughout. I'm from Southcourt, actually.

  4. So my pronunciation isn't perfect.

  5. But yeah, if you have your Bibles, we're going to be reading here from Psalm 27 in just a moment.

  6. But before I begin, I just want to express my thanks to the elders here at Carrigline Baptist Church for inviting me to come and open God's Word with you this morning.

  7. For those of you who don't know me, as Alex shared, my wife and I, we have the privilege of serving at Carrig Tool Baptist Church.

  8. But it's always such a joy and a privilege to be able to visit with our sister churches to see what God is doing in all the churches around the Cork-Carrig Project.

  9. So thank you so much for having us and for being so welcoming.

  10. Well, as you know, this summer in Ireland was uncharacteristically hot.

  11. And when it gets hot, people like to find the nearest body of water, something they can jump into to cool themselves down.

  12. And honestly, you can't really blame them.

  13. I was actually pretty miserable this summer.

  14. My wife loves the heat, but I was made for cooler temperatures.

  15. So it was not for me.

  16. But one of the things you're likely to see if you hang around a dock or a swimming pool long enough is a parent waiting in the water with their arms extended, coaxing their child to jump in.

  17. And it's pretty cute if you've ever seen this unfold.

  18. Because you have those kids who are naturally fearless, jumping into the water with reckless abandon.

  19. But then you have those kids who are more tentative.

  20. So they're slowly making their way to the edge.

  21. And they require a bit more convincing.

  22. I'm not going to ask which of those groups you belong to.

  23. But have you ever thought about what goes through a child's head just before they jump?

  24. So I asked my wife, Monica, this question recently.

  25. And she said, I just wanted the adrenaline rush.

  26. That's certainly one answer.

  27. I don't know if that would have been my answer.

  28. But she gave another answer as well.

  29. She said, trust.

  30. She had confidence that her mom and her dad were both willing and able to take care of her if she made that leap.

  31. And in our text this morning, we're going to see a similar kind of trust.

  32. We'll see that the psalmist's confidence in the face of hardship, it comes from knowing that God is able and willing to take care of him.

  33. And it's my prayer that as we leave from this place this morning, we'll do so with a greater degree of trusting God.

  34. No matter the circumstances in which we find ourselves this morning.

  35. And that we would have a greater desire for God's presence in our own lives.

  36. So I want to begin by working verse by verse through the psalm before turning to a few points of application.

  37. But before I dive in, let's just take some time once again to pray together before we turn to God's word.

  38. God, thank you so much for your word and for the privilege of sharing it with the folks at Karageline Baptist Church this morning.

  39. Would you help me to explain the message clearly?

  40. The message that you intended to convey, God.

  41. Not something from me.

  42. And would you help that message to take root in our hearts?

  43. For those who are here this morning who have not placed their faith in you,

  44. would you reveal to them by your Holy Spirit that you are good and you are trustworthy?

  45. And God, would you give me clarity of speech, clarity of thought, calmness of spirit?

  46. And I ask all these things in Jesus' name.

  47. Amen.

  48. So let's read the text together.

  49. Beginning in verse 1, it says, the Psalm of David.

  50. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

  51. Whom shall I fear?

  52. The Lord is the stronghold of my life.

  53. Of whom shall I be afraid?

  54. When the wicked advance against me to devour me,

  55. it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.

  56. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear.

  57. Though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.

  58. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek,

  59. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

  60. to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

  61. For in the day of trouble, he will keep me safe in his dwelling.

  62. He will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

  63. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me.

  64. At his sacred tent, I will sacrifice with shouts of joy.

  65. I will sing and make music to the Lord.

  66. Hear my voice when I call, Lord.

  67. Be merciful to me and answer me.

  68. My heart says this of you.

  69. Seek his face.

  70. Your face, Lord, I will seek.

  71. Do not hide your face from me.

  72. Do not turn your servant away in anger.

  73. You have been my helper.

  74. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior.

  75. Though my father and mother forsake me,

  76. the Lord will receive me.

  77. Teach me your way, Lord.

  78. Lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.

  79. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes.

  80. For false witnesses rise up against me,

  81. spouting malicious accusations.

  82. I remain confident of this.

  83. I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

  84. Wait for the Lord.

  85. Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

  86. This is the word of the Lord.

  87. Well, just to give a little bit of background to our text this morning,

  88. you may have noticed at the outset that in our text,

  89. we're given a simple inscription of David.

  90. Now, the Hebrew construction that translates to the English phrase of David,

  91. it can mean that David is the author of this particular psalm,

  92. or possibly that David is just the subject of this psalm,

  93. that the psalm is written about him.

  94. And there are other potential translations as well.

  95. But while it's difficult to know with certainty,

  96. I think it's likely the psalm was written by David.

  97. I think the evidence points in that direction.

  98. But beyond this simple inscription at the beginning of our text,

  99. we aren't given any additional information about the circumstances that gave rise to it.

  100. The sort of information we find, for instance, in Psalm chapter 51,

    Psalms 51 chapter mention

  101. where we're told that David had composed that particular psalm

  102. after he had been confronted in his adultery with Bathsheba.

  103. And information like that, it helps to set the stage and to provide some useful context.

  104. Psalm 27 doesn't give us that sort of context,

  105. but that certainly doesn't take away from its significance or its usefulness

  106. in the life of believers today.

  107. In our text, we see the psalmist, David,

  108. that he begins and ends with expressions of his confidence in God.

  109. And expressions of great difficulty sprinkled in between.

  110. So I want to break the text into four main sections this morning.

  111. In verses 1 to 3, we'll see David's initial expression of confidence in God.

  112. In verses 4 to 6, David's desire for protection in God's presence.

  113. In verses 7 to 12, we'll see David cry out with pressing needs.

  114. And finally, in verses 13 to 14, we're going to see David's confidence revisited.

  115. So let's begin with the first section, David's confidence.

  116. In these opening verses, David proclaims his confidence in the face of extreme hardship,

  117. and he gives us the reason for it.

  118. Let's look again at verses 1 to 3.

  119. David says,

  120. The Lord is the stronghold of my life.

  121. Of whom shall I be afraid?

  122. When the wicked advance against me to devour me,

  123. it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.

  124. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear.

  125. Though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.

  126. Why is it that David is able to remain confident in the face of extreme hardship?

  127. It's because of who God is.

  128. And what he is capable of.

  129. David recognizes that God is able to save and to defend, no matter the situation.

  130. And I don't know about you, but when I look at this list of things that David says he has no reason to fear,

  131. I can't help but think about how uniquely terrifying some of them are.

  132. So we have an army making war against him.

  133. We have enemies who are intent on David's destruction.

  134. Now you and I, we might have forgiven David for thinking,

  135. Yeah, you actually have really good reason to be afraid right now.

  136. But David doesn't go that way.

  137. David voices his confidence in God.

  138. God is up to the task of taking care of David.

  139. He's even able to make the plans of those wishing to do David harm come to nothing.

  140. And this is certainly a reality that David would see outplay or play out in his life time and time again.

  141. To give just one example, you may remember David's encounter with a little guy named Goliath.

  142. We're told in 1 Samuel that David was brave when even the king, Saul, shrunk back in fear.

  143. David says to Saul in 1 Samuel 17, verse 37,

    1 Samuel 17:37

  144. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.

  145. And if you remember that story, God did rescue David that day.

  146. Goliath, the enemy intent on destroying David and the peoples of God,

  147. was the one who stumbled and fell that day.

  148. And turning now to verses 4 to 6,

  149. we see David's desire for protection in God's presence.

  150. So let's read those verses again.

  151. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek,

  152. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

  153. to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

  154. For in the day of trouble, he will keep me safe in his dwelling.

  155. He will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

  156. But look at verse 6.

  157. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me.

  158. At his sacred tent, I will sacrifice with shouts of joy.

  159. I will sing and make music to the Lord.

  160. In these verses, David uses these two phrases,

  161. the house of the Lord and in his temple.

  162. And these two phrases, they speak to the period of redemptive history

  163. where God's presence was specially connected to place.

  164. In David's day, that place was the tabernacle.

  165. This is the place where God's people, they would go to worship,

  166. to offer sacrifices, to connect with God in a special sort of way.

  167. Things are different with us now as members of a new covenant,

  168. but this is the way they sort of interacted with God's presence in the old covenant.

  169. In verse 4, we're told that this is the place that David wants to stay forever.

  170. And why? Because he knows that God's presence means God's protection.

  171. And when, by God's hand, David is protected,

  172. he's going to worship God for what he's done.

  173. So turning to verses 7 to 12,

  174. you may have noticed that the tone of the psalm begins to change.

  175. We see David cry out to God with what seemed to be very pressing needs.

  176. And again, we don't know the specific circumstances that occasion this psalm,

  177. but we can see that David is really in some sort of trouble here.

  178. Let's look again at verse 7.

  179. Hear my voice when I call, Lord.

  180. Be merciful to me and answer me.

  181. My heart says of you, seek his face.

  182. In your face, Lord, I will seek.

  183. Do not hide your face from me.

  184. Do not turn your servant away in anger.

  185. You have been my helper.

  186. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior.

  187. Though my father and mother forsake me,

  188. the Lord will receive me.

  189. Teach me your way, Lord.

  190. Lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.

  191. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,

  192. for false witnesses rise up against me,

  193. spouting malicious accusations.

  194. Note David's response to this trouble,

  195. but also the ground of his hope in this difficult circumstance.

  196. How does David respond to this hardship?

  197. By seeking God.

  198. By asking for direction,

  199. God's guidance, and protection.

  200. David chooses to turn to God

  201. in the midst of these difficulties

  202. because God has come through for him

  203. time and time again.

  204. And he trusts that God is able to do it once more.

  205. What is the extent of God's care for David

  206. expressed in this psalm?

  207. Even if he's abandoned by his own father and mother,

  208. God will not abandon him.

  209. So finally, let's look at verses 13 and 14,

  210. where the tone of the psalm seems to shift

  211. one final time.

  212. David ends the psalm in a place of confidence

  213. once more.

  214. I remain confident of this.

  215. I will see the goodness of the Lord

  216. in the land of the living.

  217. Wait for the Lord.

  218. Be strong and take heart

  219. and wait for the Lord.

  220. In verses 7 to 12,

  221. David lets us know that

  222. he needs God to come through.

  223. There are people who wish to do him harm,

  224. people who have sought to destroy

  225. David's reputation.

  226. But in spite of all of those difficulties,

  227. he's confident that God is going to work,

  228. even if some waiting is required.

  229. Charles Spurgeon, as he was reflecting

  230. on verse 13, he had this to say.

  231. According to our varied experiences,

  232. we must all subscribe to the declaration

  233. that this earth is more or less

  234. a valley of tears.

  235. That is not our rest,

  236. for it is polluted.

  237. There are too many thorns in this nest

  238. for us to abide comfortably in it.

  239. But faith comes into this unpromising field

  240. and believes she will see the goodness

  241. of the Lord even here.

  242. She rushes into the fiercest fight

  243. that ever rages,

  244. fully believing she will see

  245. the banner of the Lord's mercy and truth

  246. waving even there.

  247. She bears the burden and heat

  248. of the earthly toil

  249. and expects to experience

  250. the Lord's faithful love beneath it all.

  251. She knows she will see more of her God

  252. in the land beyond the flood.

  253. But still she expects to see

  254. the goodness of the Lord

  255. even in this land of the living

  256. that is so distracted and disturbed

  257. with sorrows and cares,

  258. trials and tribulations.

  259. This is the confidence

  260. in which David rests,

  261. that he will see

  262. the goodness of God

  263. once again.

  264. Now before we bring our time together

  265. to a close,

  266. I want to leave you

  267. with just a few points

  268. of application.

  269. I know I'm preaching

  270. to the choir here.

  271. I don't have to tell you

  272. that as Christians,

  273. we're not immune to hardship.

  274. In fact, you could argue

  275. that in some cases

  276. being a Christian

  277. invites even more hardship.

  278. In a congregation of this size,

  279. I'm sure that there's been

  280. experiences of real difficulty.

  281. Experiences of pain,

  282. of hurt,

  283. and threat.

  284. In our own church

  285. back in Carrad Tool,

  286. we've seen battles

  287. with debilitating illness.

  288. We've seen infertility.

  289. We've seen the loss of job,

  290. the loss of home.

  291. Don't answer out loud,

  292. but if those have been

  293. some of your experiences,

  294. what has been the basis

  295. of your hope

  296. when difficulties like that arise?

  297. Just think about that

  298. for a moment.

  299. What grounds your hope

  300. as a believer

  301. in those difficult moments?

  302. Friends,

  303. if God is able

  304. to take care of David,

  305. he is able

  306. to take care of you.

  307. How different

  308. would the trying seasons

  309. of our life be

  310. if we could learn

  311. to rest in that truth?

  312. If you're here this morning

  313. and you're in the middle

  314. of an extreme hardship,

  315. how have you responded to it?

  316. I know it can be

  317. so easy to point the finger

  318. at God,

  319. to spiral,

  320. to become paralyzed

  321. by our griefs,

  322. our fears,

  323. and our anxieties,

  324. but what if instead

  325. we turn to God immediately,

  326. believing that he is both able

  327. and willing

  328. to come through for us again,

  329. believing that he will

  330. never abandon us,

  331. believing that he is able

  332. to lead us down

  333. a level path?

  334. As I was preparing

  335. the sermon,

  336. I went through the text

  337. and I tried to make

  338. a sort of inventory

  339. of the ways

  340. in which God

  341. is described

  342. by the psalmist

  343. in this passage.

  344. I just want to share

  345. with you

  346. a few of the things

  347. I noticed.

  348. The psalmist says

  349. of God

  350. that he's a savior

  351. and he's a defender.

  352. He's powerful

  353. and he's in control.

  354. He's a helpful guide

  355. and teacher.

  356. If you're in Christ

  357. here this morning,

  358. this is the one,

  359. to use a boxing analogy,

  360. this is the one you have

  361. in your corner

  362. this morning.

  363. Now one great difficulty

  364. of the Christian life

  365. that's reflected here

  366. in David's words

  367. in verses 13 to 14

  368. is that God does not work

  369. on our timeline.

  370. His ways

  371. are not our ways.

  372. He's able

  373. to come through for us,

  374. we know this,

  375. but sometimes

  376. that requires waiting.

  377. And this is a lesson

  378. that many of us

  379. here today

  380. have learned

  381. or are in the process

  382. of learning.

  383. If necessary,

  384. brothers and sisters,

  385. wait on the Lord.

  386. Now,

  387. if you're on the back end

  388. of hardship

  389. and difficulty,

  390. if God has led you through,

  391. again,

  392. what has been your response?

  393. In verses 4 and 5,

  394. David voices

  395. his desire

  396. to remain

  397. in the Lord's presence

  398. forever

  399. because he knows

  400. that God

  401. is able

  402. to protect him.

  403. But remember

  404. verse 6,

  405. then my head

  406. will be exalted

  407. above the enemies

  408. who surround me.

  409. At his sacred tent,

  410. I will sacrifice

  411. with shouts of joy.

  412. I will sing

  413. and make music

  414. to the Lord.

  415. You see,

  416. David says here,

  417. when by God's hand

  418. I am protected

  419. and I am taken care of,

  420. I'm going to worship.

  421. I'm going

  422. to give thanks

  423. for it.

  424. Yes,

  425. members of this body

  426. have experienced

  427. real difficulty,

  428. real trials

  429. and tribulations,

  430. but I also know

  431. God enough

  432. to know that

  433. you've seen God

  434. come through

  435. in big ways.

  436. at our own church,

  437. we've seen God

  438. provide housing

  439. for people

  440. who needed it.

  441. We've seen God

  442. provide treatment

  443. and healing

  444. to give children

  445. when it seemed

  446. impossible.

  447. impossible.

  448. And as we reflect

  449. on these things,

  450. let this be our desire

  451. to praise God

  452. for the way

  453. he has

  454. and continues

  455. to care for us.

  456. Now,

  457. finally,

  458. if you're here today

  459. and you haven't

  460. placed your faith

  461. and trust

  462. in Jesus

  463. or you don't even know

  464. what that would look like,

  465. I'd ask you

  466. to consider the words

  467. of the psalmist today.

  468. It's my prayer

  469. that you would see

  470. that faith

  471. and trust

  472. in God

  473. will never

  474. be misplaced.

  475. In one of my favorite verses,

  476. the author

  477. of the book of Hebrews,

  478. he tells us

  479. in chapter 7,

  480. verse 25,

  481. that he is able

  482. to save completely

  483. those who come

  484. to God

  485. through him

  486. because he always

  487. lives to intercede

  488. for them.

  489. Friends,

  490. if you don't know

  491. where you stand

  492. this morning,

  493. let me assure you,

  494. you can depend on him

  495. both for your salvation

  496. and to help you

  497. navigate a life

  498. that is so often

  499. filled with hardship,

  500. difficulty,

  501. threat,

  502. and discouragement.

  503. Let's pray together.

  504. God,

  505. what a wonderful privilege

  506. it's been

  507. to share your word

  508. this morning.

  509. None of us

  510. are immune

  511. to hardships

  512. and difficulties,

  513. God,

  514. but this is our hope

  515. that you are able

  516. and willing

  517. to come through

  518. for us.

  519. Even if that

  520. doesn't look the way

  521. that we think

  522. it should look,

  523. even if that isn't

  524. at the time

  525. that we think

  526. it should be,

  527. God,

  528. you have been faithful

  529. before you

  530. will be faithful

  531. again.

  532. God,

  533. if there are

  534. those here

  535. this morning

  536. who have not

  537. placed their faith

  538. and their trust

  539. in you,

  540. I ask that

  541. by the power

  542. of your Holy Spirit

  543. you would draw

  544. them into

  545. relationship

  546. with your Son

  547. who loves them,

  548. who gave

  549. his self for them.

  550. and we ask

  551. all these things

  552. in his name.

  553. Amen.

  554. Amen.
