  1. Take your problems this morning, turn over to Hebrews chapter 5, Hebrews chapter 5 this morning,

Hebrews 5 chapter mention Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Parenting with Patience.

  4. And part of parenting, and Father's Day I think is important because the Bible tells us that

  5. the father sets the tone in the home.

  6. You know, as a father you are a guide, a direction, you set a direction for the home.

  7. That's the biblical reality that we are to live under, that the father has that influence

  8. and that direction.

  9. You know, and we understand the picture that is there.

  10. And we're going to look today at a very important dynamic because unless the Lord is part of

  11. your household, the Bible tells us that you build it in vain.

  12. Unless the Lord gives and guides and directs, and as believers we ought to desire to listen

  13. to what God says and not what a so-called expert might say.

  14. Because you know what, I've learned one thing over the years, usually the designer is the

  15. best expert on something.

  16. If they designed it, they understand every parameter around it.

  17. How it's to function, what it's to do, all the nuances and details of things about it.

  18. And so this morning we're going to be looking at a very important topic when it comes to

  19. dads and even moms.

  20. Because it has to do with families and that's raising of our children.

  21. But to discipline with love.

  22. To discipline with love.

  23. You know, that's an important element because discipline is that, because you think about

  24. what's the purpose of discipline?

  25. What's the purpose of disciplining a child?

  26. That's something that every parent, everybody that works with kids needs to understand and

  27. get a picture of what is the purpose.

  28. What is the objective?

  29. What did God design how for this to work?

  30. Because some people get the idea that discipline is to punish a child for what they've done.

  31. But it's also, when you consider biblically, it's to prepare them for who they are to become.

  32. Punishment for just the moment is in the moment.

  33. Now we're going to look at those things because punishment is a means of character building.

  34. Used appropriately can be beneficial.

  35. Because certain things need dealt with in the moment.

  36. But when you deal with those things, we're going to see here this morning from the Word

  37. of God that you need to understand the why are you doing it.

  38. Are you doing it for the moment?

  39. Are you doing it for what you want them to become?

  40. Because what they are to become is what God designed the family to do.

  41. Because remember, you're not raising children.

  42. You ought to be raising mature adults.

  43. Adults who understand and have grown and matured to do what they ought to do,

  44. and especially in following the Lord.

  45. And so today we're going to be looking on this Father's Day at Hebrews 12 here,

  46. and it gives us really a parenting model.

  47. And the model we have is God to his children.

  48. But you know what?

  49. The same model applies for parents today to our children.

  50. And this is important because whether you're a parent or a grandparent,

  51. no matter what you did or what backgrounds you came from or how things used to operate,

  52. I want you to grab a hold of today, we need to do things God's way,

  53. and not the world's way or some expert's way.

  54. You know, it's always amazed me as over the years as I've looked and seen how many experts

  55. write books about children who have never had kids.

  56. You know?

  57. It's like, why would you want to listen to somebody who has no experience?

  58. Because dealing with children and disciplining them and directing them in the direction they ought to go

  59. is a very complex thing.

  60. It's complex in many ways.

  61. But let's look this morning.

  62. If you found Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  63. I encourage you to stand here together with me as we look together in God's Word.

  64. And we'll read a few verses here, then we'll pray,

  65. and then we'll get in to the message here this morning.

  66. But look what the Word of God tells us.

  67. And it says,

  68. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children.

  69. My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord,

  70. nor faint when thou art rebuked of him.

  71. For whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth,

  72. and scourges every son whom he receiveth.

  73. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons.

  74. For what son is he whom the Father chasteneth not?

  75. But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers,

  76. then are ye bastards and not sons.

  77. Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh, which corrected us,

  78. and we gave them reverence.

  79. Shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits and live?

  80. For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure.

  81. But he for our profit that we might be partakers of his holiness.

  82. Now, no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous.

  83. Nevertheless, afterward, it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness

  84. unto them which are exercised thereby.

  85. Let's pray.

  86. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you this morning.

  87. Lord, as we take a few moments to look into your word here,

  88. this principle of chastisement or correction.

  89. Lord, that we find here of the example that you give to us.

  90. And that, Lord, is an example of your love for us.

  91. Lord, that you chastise your children.

  92. Lord, you don't treat us evil or against what is for our benefit.

  93. But, Lord, as we look at these things today,

  94. Lord, help us to grab a hold of those things in a mighty way of just the principles of your word,

  95. that that might be the driving factor in all that we do.

  96. And, Lord, we ask it all in your precious name.

  97. Amen.

  98. You may be seated.

  99. As we look today, when it comes to discipline and disciplining children,

  100. there's a lot of different ideas out there today.

  101. And I think oftentimes parents are oftentimes afraid to discipline.

  102. We live in a culture where parents are sometimes afraid to discipline their children.

  103. Sometimes laziness may be an element for some,

  104. but a lot of times I think parents are just afraid.

  105. They don't know what to do or how to do it to make sure that it's accomplished in the right way.

  106. And sometimes that's because of the direction and the information they've been given.

  107. They're afraid because they've been told over and over that,

  108. well, if you correct them, you're going to hurt little Johnny's feelings.

  109. Or, you know, you're going to warp them in some ideology of a mental capacity of some kind.

  110. And we find here that culture has pushed that direction.

  111. You know, we find for decades the culture around us has prized a child's comfort over a child's character.

  112. You know, the objective of raising up children is to give them character.

  113. Now, they may be a character, but they need to have character.

  114. There's a difference.

  115. Okay?

  116. Now, when we look at that reality of character,

  117. until the very word discipline sometimes gets twisted around,

  118. because oftentimes when people hear discipline, they hear cruelty.

  119. That's the mindset.

  120. And there are some cases of that that take place.

  121. That's very real.

  122. And we understand that dynamic of physical correction.

  123. Some people automatically connect any type of physical correction with abuse.

  124. I want you to understand there's a difference.

  125. There's a distinct difference.

  126. And we need to understand what that difference is and how it's different

  127. when it comes to discipline.

  128. Because we can oftentimes get caught up in that idea or imagery,

  129. and we're worried about those things.

  130. You know, we find parents today are afraid of corporal punishment

  131. because they're afraid somebody might turn them in.

  132. Now, I want you to understand that while that may be a legitimate thing,

  133. it doesn't remove your responsibility before God to deal with your children correctly.

  134. To understand that what God has instructed us is more important than anything else.

  135. Because when a mother or a father who gives even measured loving correction,

  136. you know, I'm a firm believer in corporal punishment,

  137. but it ought not to be administered in anger,

  138. it ought to be administered in patience with direction.

  139. Because we're going to look here today that sometimes a little bit of pain goes a long ways

  140. in the moment to deal with the thought process.

  141. And it's a means of communicating the right thing that's short-lived

  142. in a sense that it's not causing them a harm,

  143. but it's getting their attention to understand that choices have consequences.

  144. And we have to balance those things because when we understand that God's Word does not blur the line

  145. between discipline and abuse,

  146. because correction given in anger or rage is sin.

  147. I want you to understand that has to do with the heart of the person administering.

  148. What's your purpose?

  149. You know, for years we've had a lot of that where people disciplined out of their own anger

  150. instead of looking to say,

  151. how is this benefiting to build the character of the child?

  152. What's the purpose behind it?

  153. How does that play out?

  154. And we're going to look at some of these things here this morning

  155. that this generation that we live in

  156. has quietly set loving correction down

  157. and picked up negotiation, explanation, and distraction in its place.

  158. We're going to find here in Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  159. here we're going to find here,

  160. it answers that fear head on.

  161. The Bible makes it very clear that God disciplines those that He loves.

  162. So in other words, discipline and love are connected.

  163. And we need to understand how those are connected by the image

  164. and the representation of how God deals with us.

  165. Because I want you to understand as parents,

  166. that Word of God gives you permission to discipline your children without guilt.

  167. Whatever fear has hindered you from doing what you ought to do,

  168. you need to understand that the truth of God's Word

  169. ought to set you free of those things.

  170. To correct your child in love is not harm,

  171. it's the very thing your Heavenly Father does for you.

  172. You know, we need to realize when you're training a child,

  173. it's helping them understand even how God corrects them.

  174. And God will correct you if you're His child.

  175. You say, preacher, why would He do that?

  176. Because He loves you.

  177. He understands that there's parameters,

  178. there's things that set dynamics around you,

  179. there's a fence that protects you.

  180. You know, isn't that the reason we have fences?

  181. It's for protection.

  182. Keep certain things in and other things out.

  183. God's Word gives us the placement of that fence in our life.

  184. We need to teach our children that God does the same thing

  185. and allow them to see that by building those things into their life.

  186. And to understand there's no better day than Father's Day to say,

  187. no matter what was in my past,

  188. I want to move forward in the truth of God's Word.

  189. Whether it's giving advice to people or helping people

  190. or being a parent yourself and saying,

  191. how do I do this properly?

  192. Because, you know, that's the best thing you can do for your children

  193. is to raise them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord,

  194. correcting them and guiding them into what God would have.

  195. And so we need to grab a hold of that reality.

  196. You know, the Bible tells us in John 15,

  197. the Word of God tells us this.

  198. I want you to understand, notice what it tells us here in John 15.

  199. It says,

  200. I am the true vine, and the Father is the husbandman.

  201. And every branch in me that beareth not fruit,

  202. he taketh away.

  203. And every branch that beareth fruit,

  204. he purges it that it may bring forth more fruit.

  205. You know what?

  206. John chapter 15, Jesus is talking to his disciples.

    John 15 chapter mention

  207. He's talking to them as a father to a child dynamic,

  208. but he's using an analogy of a husbandman

  209. who has vines and says,

  210. these vines need to be guided, directed,

  211. they need to be purged.

  212. Purging is that same dynamic of correction,

  213. that dynamic of cutting off.

  214. There is some dynamic, you might say,

  215. of pain implied, discomfort implied,

  216. not out of cruelty, but out of benefit.

  217. To say there's a purpose behind it,

  218. so it might bring forth more fruit

  219. because of the guidance of those things.

  220. It's the father who holds the pruning knife,

  221. and notice which branch he cuts.

  222. He's not talking about the dead one,

  223. but the branch he cuts is the one that's bearing fruit,

  224. that it will still bear more fruit.

  225. Nobody thinks about pruning a bush as hurting the bush.

  226. We understand that when you prune correctly,

  227. what's it do?

  228. It helps it multiply, helps it to grow.

  229. The same thing is with your children.

  230. We need to look at it,

  231. is how am I helping through this to help them to grow?

  232. Help them to mature,

  233. to become who God wants them to be.

  234. Because the God who is our perfect father

  235. shows us what loving discipline looks like.

  236. Not in theory, but in his own dealings with us.

  237. You know, I want you to understand this morning,

  238. if you've never been chastised by God,

  239. you need to check your salvation.

  240. That one I will say.

  241. Because you know what?

  242. The Bible makes it very clear that God chastises those that are his

  243. because he wants them to be sanctified.

  244. He wants them to mature and grow in the Lord.

  245. There's going to be correction,

  246. because we're going to need course correction during life.

  247. But I want you to understand,

  248. first thing here this morning,

  249. is look here in Hebrews chapter 12, verse 6.

    Hebrews 12:6

  250. Notice what it says,

  251. For whom the Lord loveth,

  252. he chasteneth and scourges every son whom he receiveth.

  253. Point number one this morning is this,

  254. discipline is an expression of love, not anger.

  255. You know what gets discipline in trouble with parents?

  256. Is anger.

  257. When you react with anger instead of control,

  258. with patience,

  259. we talked about that last week,

  260. it's an important dynamic to grab a hold of

  261. that the Lord loves us and he chastens us.

  262. You know, love and discipline are not opposites.

  263. Matter of fact, I want you to understand,

  264. love and discipline are inseparable.

  265. Because if you don't discipline your children,

  266. you don't love them.

  267. Parents today let their kids just do whatever they want to do.

  268. You know what?

  269. That's not love.

  270. That's actually the opposite.

  271. Because you're allowing them to go and to do

  272. and to act in ways that are contrary

  273. to them being able to grow up and mature

  274. into the adults that God wants them to be.

  275. Because a father who refuses to discipline his child

  276. does not love him more, he loves him less.

  277. You know, take a look over to Proverbs chapter 13.

    Proverbs 13 chapter mention

  278. Proverbs chapter 13 and verse 24.

    Proverbs 13 chapter mention

  279. The Bible makes it very clear.

  280. It says,

  281. He that spareth his rod does what?

  282. Hateth his son.

  283. But he that loveth him chases him betimes.

  284. In other words, diligently,

  285. he chastens them appropriately.

  286. He chases them when the moment

  287. and the direction is correct.

  288. The discipline of love is motivated

  289. by care for this child's future,

  290. not frustration over the child's present.

  291. You know, oftentimes we discipline in the present

  292. but lose sight of the distance.

  293. Where's this taking them to the future?

  294. With that in mind,

  295. it'll change what you do.

  296. It'll change how you react.

  297. It'll change what's guiding you.

  298. That you might do that in the right dynamic with love.

  299. You know, think for a moment.

  300. Very familiar story.

  301. And it's kind of good this morning

  302. as we're looking at a nice ocean scene

  303. and all the things that are going on here.

  304. But you know, the book of Jonah.

  305. Jonah.

  306. God disciplined Jonah.

  307. Jonah went a direction opposite

  308. of what God instructed him.

  309. God told, came to Jonah and said,

  310. Jonah, you're to go to Nineveh

  311. and preach that destruction's gonna come to the city

  312. if they don't repent.

  313. What did Jonah do?

  314. He ran.

  315. He ran fast.

  316. He tried to run far.

  317. Matter of fact, I think he made himself

  318. thinking he got the escape.

  319. Because it's kind of funny

  320. that he was asleep in the ship

  321. when the rest of the ship's waving around

  322. like he's comfortable with where he's at.

  323. Do an opposite of what God instructed him to do.

  324. And we find out as we go through that account,

  325. we won't take time to read it all this morning.

  326. But we know the Bible says

  327. a great fish took up Jonah

  328. when they threw him overboard.

  329. Now let me ask you a question.

  330. What was God's purpose in that fish?

  331. Was it punishment or was it rescuing him?

  332. I want you to understand

  333. when God disciplines his children,

  334. the goal is always restoration,

  335. not condemnation.

  336. What was God doing with Jonah through that?

  337. He wanted to get Jonah back on track.

  338. Now I want you to understand

  339. that sometimes correction's not comfortable.

  340. If correction was comfortable,

  341. would it have any effect upon you?

  342. Think about it for a moment.

  343. As human beings,

  344. where do we react or change?

  345. Do we react in comfort to change?

  346. Do we change when things are comfortable?

  347. No, we don't, do we?

  348. We're perfectly content to stay comfortable.

  349. But when things are uncomfortable

  350. is when we start contemplating,

  351. considering when change needs to happen.

  352. And we see that God does that.

  353. So when you think about

  354. when you discipline your child,

  355. what's the goal?

  356. Ask yourself before you act,

  357. am I responding to my frustration

  358. or am I responding to my child's need?

  359. You know, I'll be honest with you this morning.

  360. As a dad, there were some times

  361. that it was out of frustration

  362. instead of my children.

  363. You know why?

  364. As a dad sometimes,

  365. I want you to understand

  366. as an earthly dad,

  367. sometimes we don't do what we ought to do.

  368. The important thing is you recognize that

  369. and you take correction.

  370. Because we're going to look here a little bit

  371. that God even points that out

  372. a little later here

  373. as we read earlier

  374. about a earthly father who corrects us

  375. because sometimes an earthly father corrects

  376. because of what they want

  377. instead of what's best for the child

  378. and understanding those things.

  379. You know, I want to encourage you this morning

  380. because discipline rooted in love

  381. can sometimes wait a minute

  382. to make sure it's love that's speaking.

  383. You know, as a parent,

  384. I encourage you to slow down

  385. and ask yourself that question.

  386. When your child needs correction,

  387. what, why, and how am I doing this?

  388. Is it being done from my frustration

  389. or because I want to direct them

  390. in a direction that's going to benefit their future?

  391. Do you think it would change a generation

  392. if all the parents followed that?

  393. It would change an entire generation.

  394. But we see here, number two,

  395. here this morning,

  396. look down at verse 11

  397. and he tells us this.

  398. He says,

  399. Now no chastening for the present

  400. seemeth to be joyous, but grievous.

  401. Nevertheless, afterwards,

  402. it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness

  403. unto them that are exercised thereby.

  404. You know, here's an honest verse for sure.

  405. There's no question about it

  406. when God tells us this,

  407. that chastening correction

  408. is not joyous, but grievous.

  409. Correction always involves

  410. something that's going to make you uncomfortable.

  411. It may even include pain.

  412. Because you know what?

  413. Those are the things that get our attention.

  414. But notice what it says.

  415. It may hurt in the moment,

  416. but afterwards,

  417. it bears the peaceable fruit of what?

  418. Righteousness.

  419. That's the goal.

  420. When we understand the purpose of discipline

  421. is not only immediate compliance,

  422. but long-term character.

  423. You know,

  424. we want to look for things long-term.

  425. You know,

  426. when we know and understand

  427. that it's not just about,

  428. we want to build in our children

  429. self-control

  430. and accountability

  431. and the ability to live under authority.

  432. You know,

  433. we live in a generation

  434. that has been told something

  435. that's very destructive.

  436. When a child gets told

  437. the authority is themselves

  438. and then you match it

  439. with another philosophy,

  440. follow your heart.

  441. You know,

  442. those two things sound like

  443. they work out well.

  444. Not by a chance,

  445. do they?

  446. Instead of what sounds like

  447. for their benefit

  448. becomes their destruction.

  449. Because what are they following?

  450. They're following something

  451. that's counter

  452. to what's going to benefit them.

  453. to live under authority.

  454. You know,

  455. we need to understand

  456. the dynamic of authority

  457. and maybe we'll have to talk

  458. about this a little later

  459. because I don't have time

  460. to get into it this morning.

  461. But for your children

  462. to understand

  463. how authority works

  464. and what's appropriate authority

  465. is important.

  466. Because you know what

  467. the opposite of living

  468. under authority is?

  469. Rebellion.

  470. You know,

  471. I've yet to see a parent

  472. that says,

  473. I want to raise my kids

  474. to be rebellious.

  475. But oftentimes,

  476. the very choices they make,

  477. that's what they're promoting.

  478. And then they're upset

  479. that they got rebellious children.

  480. It wasn't that

  481. your child in itself was bad.

  482. Sometimes it has to do

  483. with the parenting.

  484. Because as you understand

  485. this morning,

  486. we talked last week

  487. a little bit about

  488. gentle parenting.

  489. And how sometimes

  490. even the dynamic

  491. of this pendulum

  492. that we see in society,

  493. society never seems

  494. to land on the right direction.

  495. You know,

  496. we saw,

  497. we talked last week

  498. about where we had

  499. a very dynamic

  500. where people almost

  501. promoted abuse

  502. to a pendulum swing

  503. the other way

  504. where,

  505. just talk to Johnny,

  506. it'll be fine.

  507. I want you to understand

  508. both of those

  509. are counter to what God wants.

  510. God doesn't,

  511. God's word

  512. doesn't swing a pendulum,

  513. it gives you

  514. the pointed truth.

  515. it gives you

  516. a direction to go.

  517. And we understand

  518. that this gentle

  519. parenting mindset

  520. prizes warmth

  521. and connection

  522. and even wants

  523. what scripture wants

  524. in a way

  525. because it wants

  526. to form

  527. a formed heart

  528. in your child

  529. not merely

  530. out of outward compliance,

  531. but we understand

  532. there is where

  533. we part ways

  534. is over the kind

  535. of correction

  536. it calls for.

  537. You know,

  538. we want to have

  539. a connection

  540. with our kids

  541. we need to know

  542. that they need to know

  543. that you love them.

  544. But passive correction

  545. will not get them

  546. the direction

  547. and understanding

  548. of security

  549. and love

  550. that they need.

  551. Direct correction

  552. is what's needed.

  553. Sometimes you need

  554. to address the point

  555. pointedly.

  556. Don't beat around

  557. the bush.

  558. You know,

  559. sometimes we even

  560. do that with adults

  561. and sometimes

  562. it gets us

  563. in trouble

  564. because we don't

  565. want to actually

  566. just call it out.

  567. You know,

  568. we want to have

  569. all sorts of

  570. sort of euthanisms

  571. and everything else

  572. that we have

  573. to try to say

  574. this is this

  575. or that's that

  576. and they're just

  577. saying this is

  578. what it is.

  579. You know,

  580. there's an account

  581. in the Old Testament

  582. with King David

  583. and a man

  584. by the name

  585. of Nathan.

  586. That account

  587. can give us

  588. a good dynamic

  589. because I want you

  590. to see what

  591. Nathan did.

  592. If you remember

  593. that story,

  594. Nathan came

  595. and told David

  596. about an account

  597. of an individual

  598. who was taking

  599. abuse of somebody

  600. who didn't have

  601. as much as them

  602. and he goes

  603. through this

  604. whole spill

  605. about how

  606. all these things

  607. come together

  608. because what he did

  609. is he played it out

  610. to the fact

  611. that David

  612. would understand

  613. because David

  614. got upset.

  615. You know,

  616. he says,

  617. where's this guy?

  618. This needs to be

  619. corrected.

  620. But that's where

  621. it gets direct

  622. because what

  623. did Nathan do?

  624. Thou art the man.

  625. That's direct

  626. correction

  627. to say,

  628. hey,

  629. it's you

  630. and you need

  631. to deal with it.

  632. You know,

  633. you can't pass

  634. the buck.

  635. It's not somebody

  636. else's fault.

  637. The motive

  638. behind a gentler

  639. correction

  640. is empathy.

  641. They want,

  642. you want to feel

  643. what your child

  644. feels

  645. and spare them

  646. the hurt.

  647. But I want you

  648. to understand this.

  649. Empathy cannot

  650. do the hard

  651. thing

  652. and it's not

  653. compassion.

  654. There's a difference

  655. between compassion

  656. and empathy.

  657. Compassion

  658. is built

  659. out of love

  660. doing what's

  661. needful

  662. and not just

  663. what feels

  664. good.

  665. We need people

  666. of compassion

  667. not of empathy.

  668. I've talked

  669. about that

  670. before.

  671. We live in a

  672. generation that

  673. lives by empathy.

  674. Empathy is not

  675. a good word.

  676. It sounds good

  677. but it really

  678. isn't doing

  679. what it says

  680. it does.

  681. Compassion

  682. means I have

  683. a loving

  684. care for the

  685. outcome

  686. and I will

  687. do what's

  688. needed

  689. to help

  690. them

  691. that they

  692. might get

  693. accomplished

  694. and go

  695. to the

  696. direction

  697. that they

  698. need to

  699. go.

  700. Compassion

  701. says I

  702. want a

  703. solution

  704. to the

  705. problem

  706. and not

  707. wather

  708. with them

  709. in the

  710. problem.

  711. Empathy

  712. says let's

  713. wather together

  714. in the mud.

  715. compassion

  716. says let me

  717. help you

  718. out of the

  719. mud and

  720. clean you

  721. up.

  722. I'm glad

  723. God has

  724. compassion.

  725. I'm glad

  726. God doesn't

  727. have empathy.

  728. He doesn't

  729. want to

  730. come

  731. wather in

  732. the mud

  733. with us.

  734. He doesn't

  735. want to

  736. come

  737. wather in

  738. sin.

  739. He says

  740. I want

  741. to lift

  742. you up

  743. out of

  744. that.

  745. that.

  746. That's

  747. the same

  748. dynamic

  749. because

  750. compassion

  751. cares

  752. enough to

  753. do what

  754. is right

  755. even when

  756. it grieves

  757. the individual

  758. empathy.

  759. The other

  760. problem you

  761. have with

  762. that in

  763. today's

  764. world

  765. is that

  766. the child

  767. will never

  768. learn that

  769. actions have

  770. consequences,

  771. that boundaries

  772. are real,

  773. and that

  774. character is

  775. built through

  776. difficulty and

  777. not around

  778. it.

  779. Notice what

  780. it tells us

  781. here in our

  782. text.

  783. Look back

  784. in verse

  785. 11.

  786. It says

  787. this,

  788. it says

  789. nevertheless

  790. afterwards

  791. it yielded

  792. the peaceable

  793. fruit of

  794. what?

  795. Righteousness.

  796. That which

  797. is right.

  798. You know

  799. today we

  800. have a lot

  801. of parents

  802. who want

  803. to remove

  804. consequences.

  805. You know

  806. what the

  807. problem is

  808. with our

  809. kids and

  810. our schools?

  811. Is we

  812. don't have

  813. parents that

  814. want to hold

  815. their kids

  816. accountable.

  817. They don't

  818. want to live

  819. under

  820. authority.

  821. And understand

  822. that person

  823. is there,

  824. that teacher

  825. is there to

  826. give them

  827. something that

  828. they need to

  829. be prepared

  830. for life.

  831. When a kid

  832. doesn't get

  833. an A, it's

  834. probably because

  835. they didn't

  836. earn it.

  837. Let me give

  838. you another

  839. clue.

  840. Even if they

  841. earned it and

  842. the teacher

  843. didn't give

  844. it, I want

  845. you to

  846. understand it's

  847. going to build

  848. character in

  849. them because

  850. you can do

  851. everything right

  852. and still not

  853. get the right

  854. outcome.

  855. you're

  856. teaching them

  857. some lessons

  858. in life.

  859. That's the

  860. goal of

  861. parenting.

  862. Parenting

  863. isn't to

  864. coddle,

  865. it's to

  866. correct and

  867. to guide.

  868. Disciplining

  869. in love

  870. says I

  871. want to,

  872. I'm looking

  873. long term.

  874. You know

  875. what God

  876. does in

  877. your life

  878. when he

  879. corrects

  880. you?

  881. He's

  882. looking

  883. long term.

  884. He's

  885. looking in

  886. your

  887. spiritual,

  888. mental,

  889. physical

  890. development

  891. that you

  892. might become

  893. more like

  894. him.

  895. That's

  896. called the

  897. process of

  898. sanctification.

  899. You know

  900. today as

  901. parents are

  902. you disciplined

  903. towards character?

  904. Thinking about

  905. who your

  906. child is

  907. becoming?

  908. Or only

  909. compliance?

  910. Because the

  911. long view

  912. changes the

  913. method and

  914. the tone.

  915. Here's the

  916. test in the

  917. next hard

  918. moment.

  919. Did your

  920. child pass

  921. through a

  922. real consequence

  923. or did you

  924. rescue him

  925. from it?

  926. Because

  927. understand,

  928. look back up

  929. in verse 10

  930. as we look

  931. here in our

  932. text in

  933. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  934. 12.

  935. Notice what

  936. it says,

  937. for verily for

  938. a few days

  939. chastening us

  940. after their

  941. own pleasure

  942. but for our

  943. profit that

  944. we might be

  945. partakers of

  946. his holiness.

  947. Let's

  948. understand,

  949. effective

  950. discipline

  951. requires

  952. consistency

  953. and grace.

  954. Here this

  955. verse contrasts

  956. human discipline

  957. which sometimes

  958. is inconsistent

  959. and self-serving.

  960. You know

  961. as a parent

  962. sometimes you

  963. can be

  964. inconsistent.

  965. Sometimes you'll

  966. do things because

  967. it's self-serving

  968. it's what benefits

  969. me but you

  970. know the good

  971. part is?

  972. Is when God

  973. disciplines you

  974. it's not about

  975. him, it's about

  976. you.

  977. Why?

  978. Because nobody

  979. loves you

  980. like God

  981. loves you.

  982. We need to

  983. understand the

  984. picture.

  985. God's discipline

  986. is always

  987. purposeful and

  988. aimed for our

  989. profit or benefit

  990. making us

  991. partakers of

  992. his holiness.

  993. You know as a

  994. human father you

  995. might discipline

  996. imperfectly but

  997. we need to

  998. understand that

  999. we still need to

  1000. discipline with

  1001. as much

  1002. intentionality and

  1003. consistency as

  1004. grace allows.

  1005. Because you

  1006. know what

  1007. happens?

  1008. Oftentimes this

  1009. is another

  1010. dynamic is you

  1011. have an

  1012. inconsistency in

  1013. the household.

  1014. You know pretty

  1015. much I would

  1016. say you could

  1017. talk to April

  1018. too but I

  1019. think April and

  1020. I did a pretty

  1021. good job at

  1022. this and that

  1023. was always being

  1024. on the same

  1025. page.

  1026. Because you know

  1027. what kids love

  1028. to do?

  1029. Have you ever

  1030. noticed this?

  1031. You don't even

  1032. have to teach

  1033. them?

  1034. Mom tells

  1035. them no.

  1036. Where do they

  1037. go next?

  1038. Sometimes grandma

  1039. needs a spanking.

  1040. They go to the

  1041. other parent.

  1042. What are they

  1043. looking for?

  1044. Inconsistencies.

  1045. That's the reason

  1046. as a parent you

  1047. need to be on

  1048. the same page.

  1049. Because inconsistency

  1050. causes a problem.

  1051. Permissive parenting

  1052. is nothing new but

  1053. it's become a

  1054. cultural default for

  1055. our generation.

  1056. You know what

  1057. happens when you're

  1058. inconsistent?

  1059. It's whatever the

  1060. moment calls for

  1061. will allow.

  1062. Instead of saying

  1063. no this is the

  1064. boundaries.

  1065. When we understand

  1066. that it's not the

  1067. path of least

  1068. resistance because

  1069. when you do that

  1070. you avoid hard

  1071. conversations.

  1072. You soften the

  1073. consequence and

  1074. you prize your

  1075. child's happiness

  1076. today over what

  1077. they ought to

  1078. become.

  1079. You know take a

  1080. look over into

  1081. Proverbs chapter

    Proverbs 29 chapter mention

  1082. 29.

  1083. Proverbs 29

  1084. and verse 15.

  1085. Notice what it

  1086. tells us here.

  1087. The rod and

  1088. reproof give

  1089. wisdom but a

  1090. child left to

  1091. himself bringeth

  1092. his mother to

  1093. shame.

  1094. Boy there's a lot

  1095. of truth to that.

  1096. You know what it's

  1097. telling me?

  1098. There was an

  1099. inconsistency.

  1100. You know consistent

  1101. discipline asks of

  1102. you something that

  1103. our culture doesn't

  1104. value.

  1105. The willingness to

  1106. be a parent not a

  1107. friend.

  1108. You know I want

  1109. you to understand

  1110. your job as a

  1111. parent is not to

  1112. be your kid's

  1113. friend.

  1114. There's a lot of

  1115. messed up

  1116. relationships because

  1117. people want their

  1118. kids to be their

  1119. friends instead of

  1120. you being their

  1121. parent.

  1122. I want you to

  1123. understand a

  1124. parent-child

  1125. relationship is a

  1126. distinct relationship

  1127. from a friendship

  1128. because you are not

  1129. peers.

  1130. There's a distinct

  1131. established relationship

  1132. that's there.

1133. Now I want you to

  1134. understand when your

  1135. kids get to be

  1136. adults you'll have to

  1137. enjoy time together.

  1138. I'm not saying you

  1139. can't do that but

  1140. there's always got to

  1141. understand there is a

  1142. distinct dynamic that

  1143. takes place.

1144. Your mom or dad is not

  1145. your buddy.

  1146. I want you to

  1147. understand if mom or

1148. dad is their buddy you

  1149. know what they do?

1150. They look at God like

  1151. their buddy.

1152. God is not your buddy.

  1153. He's your loving

  1154. heavenly father who

  1155. came and died for

  1156. your sin.

1157. He loved you enough to

  1158. step outside of his

  1159. comfort for your

  1160. benefit.

  1161. When we understand

  1162. that need of

  1163. consistency.

  1164. You know we talked

  1165. last week about

  1166. Eli.

  1167. The Bible tells us

  1168. that his sons made

  1169. themselves vile and he

  1170. restrained them not.

  1171. You know that's a

  1172. great picture of what

  1173. Eli did wrong.

  1174. It's not that he

  1175. didn't try to correct

  1176. them but he didn't

  1177. continue to guide them.

  1178. He didn't hold them

  1179. to account.

  1180. Because discipline is

  1181. more than setting the

  1182. standard.

  1183. It's enforcing the

  1184. standard.

  1185. Establishing those

  1186. things.

1187. You know let me ask

  1188. the parents in here

  1189. this morning what are

  1190. two or three non

  1191. negotiable standards in

  1192. your home?

  1193. You know you think

  1194. about that for a

  1195. moment.

1196. Do you have and do

  1197. your kids know?

1198. Better yet if I went

  1199. downstairs and asked

  1200. your kids what are

  1201. some things your

  1202. parents absolutely

  1203. hold to?

  1204. Because if you have

  1205. non-negotiable standards

  1206. in your household your

  1207. kids will know them.

1208. You know how I know

  1209. because that's what

  1210. they're listening to all

  1211. the time.

  1212. That's the direction.

  1213. That's the guidance.

  1214. When we understand are

  1215. they enforced

  1216. consistently?

1217. You know one thing I

1218. want to encourage you is

1219. ask your spouse to hold

  1220. you accountable because

  1221. discipline works best

  1222. when both parents are

  1223. aligned.

  1224. There's a lot of

  1225. challenges in that today

1226. with the type of family

  1227. dynamics that many kids

  1228. grow up in.

1229. You know one of the

  1230. results we see in

  1231. society today is because

  1232. of divorce.

1233. And the sad thing I see

1234. with a lot of divorce

  1235. couples is they're not

1236. even on the same page of

  1237. raising their children.

1238. Well I get to do this

  1239. at dad's and mom doesn't

1240. let me do this and mom

1241. lets me do this and dad

  1242. doesn't do that.

1243. You know what that does?

  1244. That destroys children.

  1245. That's the destructiveness.

1246. You know even if two

1247. parents can't see fit to

  1248. reconcile you know what

1249. ought to unite them and

  1250. their children.

1251. To say I want them to

  1252. have something better than

  1253. what I have.

1254. I want to be consistent.

  1255. Not because I don't want

1256. to get even with my

  1257. spouse or something else.

  1258. I want to be what's best

  1259. for my children.

  1260. That'd make a big change

  1261. in society.

  1262. When we understand the

1263. picture of what God has

  1264. for us.

  1265. Because understand this

  1266. morning you know because

1267. when it talks about God

  1268. being our heavenly father

  1269. God's not everybody's

  1270. father.

1271. Jesus said to many you

1272. of your father the devil.

1273. Why did he say that?

1274. Because we are born with

  1275. a sin nature that's

1276. counter to the things of

  1277. God.

  1278. God becomes your heavenly

  1279. father the moment you

  1280. call upon Jesus Christ

1281. the only begotten son of

1282. God that died on the

1283. cross of Calvary for you.

1284. The Bible says Jesus when

  1285. he was talking to

  1286. Nicodemus used that term

  1287. you must be what?

  1288. Born again.

  1289. What's he talking about?

  1290. Being born into God's

  1291. family.

  1292. You're born into God's

1293. family at the moment you

  1294. recognize you're a sinner

1295. and need a savior and

  1296. call upon him.

  1297. You're now a member of

  1298. God's family.

1299. You're part of the family.

1300. He is now your heavenly

  1301. father.

1302. But I want you to

  1303. understand God loved you

1304. enough even before he was

  1305. your heavenly father to

1306. say I'm going to provide

1307. a way for you to become

  1308. my child.

1309. You know what it's called

  1310. when a father accepts

  1311. a child that wasn't his

  1312. naturally.

  1313. You're adopted.

1314. You know the Bible says

1315. you're adopted in at the

  1316. moment of salvation.

  1317. What a powerful picture.

  1318. If you've never understood

  1319. the reality of salvation

1320. I encourage you today to

1321. call upon him because he

  1322. is the one.

  1323. He didn't come to

  1324. condemn you.

1325. He came to set you free.

1326. That he might be your

  1327. loving heavenly father.

  1328. father.

1329. But this morning I want to

  1330. challenge fathers here on

1331. Father's Day but also just

  1332. parents.

1333. I want you to understand

  1334. that don't take this

  1335. discouragingly but just a

  1336. reality.

  1337. You will not parent

  1338. perfectly.

  1339. We are not God.

  1340. You may not parent

  1341. perfectly but I encourage

  1342. you to parent faithfully.

1343. to be faithful to the

  1344. things of God.

  1345. Because God does not

  1346. require your perfection.

  1347. He requires your presence,

  1348. your consistency,

  1349. and your love.

1350. You know Psalm 103 says

  1351. this,

1352. As a father pitieth his

  1353. children, so the Lord

1354. pitieth them that fear him.

1355. So trust the process that

  1356. God has laid out.

1357. But I want you also to let

  1358. this free you.

  1359. Even the perfect father's

  1360. discipline yields its

1361. fruit only, notice back in

1362. verse 11, to them that are

  1363. exercised thereby.

1364. As a parent your charge is

  1365. faithfulness.

1366. But I'm going to tell you

  1367. something very clearly.

1368. Your child's choice is their

  1369. own.

  1370. You know sometimes as

1371. parents when our kids don't

1372. do what we think we raised

1373. them to do, we start asking

  1374. all sorts of weird

  1375. questions.

1376. But the only question you

1377. ought to ask, did I do

1378. what I should have done

  1379. the right way?

1380. Because you know what the

  1381. Bible tells us?

1382. That child has a choice.

  1383. The prodigal son, the

  1384. father understood the

  1385. child had a choice.

1386. And sometimes you got to

1387. allow them to make their

  1388. choice.

1389. But it ought not to change

1390. who you are or what you

  1391. do.

1392. You need to be consistent.

1393. You can hold the line with

1394. love, but your son or

  1395. daughter must still choose

1396. to submit to the things

  1397. of God.

1398. If you've been faithful and

  1399. those things that harvest

1400. of that, you know, that if

  1401. we're faithful to those

1402. things, has not yet come, I

1403. want to encourage you, don't

1404. carry guilt that belongs to a

1405. choice only your child can

  1406. make.

  1407. Keep sowing, keep loving,

  1408. keep believing, keep trusting

1409. God and following the truth

  1410. of His Word.

1411. As heads are bowed and eyes

1412. are closed this morning, maybe

1413. God spoke to your heart this

  1414. morning.

  1415. Maybe as a parent there's some

1416. things that you say, Lord, I

  1417. need your forgiveness.

1418. Maybe it's even you have to go

1419. maybe a little later today you

1420. need to go and talk to your

1421. kids and say, hey, I was

  1422. wrong.

1423. Maybe you seem to spend some

  1424. time with the Lord.

1425. Maybe that child that's way

1426. where you just need to take

1427. some time and say, Lord, spark

  1428. those things they've been

  1429. taught.

1430. Lord, help me, though, to be

  1431. consistent.

1432. This morning, whatever the need

1433. might be, whether it's to come

1434. to the Father that loves you and

1435. cares for you, that wants you to

  1436. be His child.

1437. Or if you're His child and

  1438. you're struggling with those

  1439. other things, maybe you're

  1440. struggling with kids today,

  1441. whether they're little ones,

  1442. whether they're two or 40.

1443. Will you turn that over to the

1444. Lord and say, Lord, help me to

  1445. do my part.

1446. Heavenly Fathers, we just come to

1447. you this morning once again,

1448. Lord, knowing the truth of your

  1449. Word.

1450. Lord, your Word is what sets us

1451. free as we guide and are guided

1452. and directed by the truth of

  1453. your Word.

1454. Lord, we pray just be with each

  1455. one here today.

1456. Lord, you know each situation.

1457. You know the details that nobody

  1458. else knows.

1459. But Lord, I pray that you would

1460. encourage and challenge and even

  1461. convict, Lord, because your

1462. chastening is for a reason.

1463. Lord, I pray that you just work

1464. mightily in an opportunity for

1465. each one here today to come to

1466. you, humbly just seeking your

  1467. direction and your guidance.

1468. Lord, if there's one here today

1469. that doesn't understand what it

1470. means to be truly your child,

1471. that they might get that settled

1472. in their heart today, that we

1473. might not leave and go out those

1474. doors the same way we came in.

1475. And Lord, we ask it all in your

  1476. precious name.

  1477. Amen.

1478. As piano plays, what about you

  1479. today?

  1480. Amen.

  1481. Amen.
