  1. Fantastic. Well,

  2. I hope that this morning we don't always

  3. theme our services one in one vein, but

  4. this morning we did and I hope that

  5. your heart has been helped and that

  6. you've been encouraged and reminded

  7. of the blood that was shed on

  8. your behalf.

  9. Jesus didn't have to die for us. You

  10. understand that?

  11. But he chose to.

  12. He knew it would be the only way that we

  13. would ever be able to get to a right

  14. relationship with God.

  15. Which for the blood of Jesus. The Bible

  16. says without the shedding of blood there

  17. can be no remission of sins. We see this

  18. all the way through scripture in the Old

  19. Testament. We see them having to

  20. sacrifice the perfect spotless lamb, but

  21. it was only temporary. It was never

  22. completely perfect so it could only ever

  23. do so much. And so over and over and

  24. over and over they had to make the

  25. sacrifice every year and then sacrifices

  26. throughout the year. And then Jesus came

  27. as the final sacrifice, the

  28. propitiation, the payment of our sin.

  29. And it was with his blood that we are

  30. redeemed

  31. and made right with our heavenly Father.

  32. And so

  33. I hope that this morning you've been

  34. reminded of some of those things

  35. and that you'll leave today singing some

  36. of these songs, worshipping our Savior

  37. for his blood. You know, there's a

  38. movement in modern evangelicalism to

  39. remove the blood from churches and from

  40. worship.

  41. And they say it's too gory. It's too

  42. It's messy. We don't like the blood. We

  43. want to be professional and we want to

  44. be just, you know, God has redeemed us

  45. and so we're, you know, and they go

  46. through all this stuff.

  47. But uh

  48. I don't I'm just not comfortable doing

  49. that. Just being honest with you because

  50. the Bible's very clear that it is only

  51. through the blood of Jesus that we can

  52. go to heaven. It's only through his

  53. blood that we have any access to God the

  54. Father. And so I'm going to sing about

  55. it and I'm going to preach about it and

  56. I'm going to tell people about it. I'm

  57. going to rejoice in it. I'm going to

  58. remember it

  59. because I'm thankful this morning for

  60. the blood that Jesus shed for me. Amen.

  61. Take your Bibles and go with me to the

  62. book of Joshua chapter 21 this morning.

    Joshua 21 chapter mention

  63. Joshua 21, I know that we have been at

  64. this for an hour now and we're just now

  65. getting to the Bible and so I will keep

  66. that in mind. I'm going to go as quickly

  67. as I can this morning and I don't want

  68. to I don't want to make you late for

  69. Mexican today, okay? Uh so we'll we'll

  70. do our best to get you out of here on

  71. time this morning.

  72. But uh there are some truths that we

  73. want to look at and the word of God is

  74. what makes the difference. The Bible

  75. says the grass wither, the flower fades,

  76. but the word of our God shall stand

  77. forever. So we want to make sure that we

  78. study the Bible. That's what's most

  79. important. It'll change your life.

  80. It has changed my life and I'm forever

  81. grateful for it. Joshua 21 this morning.

  82. Father, I need your help now for just a

  83. few moments. Help me to expound your

  84. word. I do not want to say my words. I

  85. want to expound your word.

  86. I pray that you'd help us to do that

  87. this morning.

  88. Help us to grow closer to you. May we be

  89. reminded of just how good and how great

  90. you are today.

  91. We'll give you the glory and the praise.

  92. We ask these things in Jesus' name.

  93. Amen. I want to talk to you this morning

  94. on this thought, a promise-keeping God.

  95. I'm thankful that we do in fact have a

  96. promise-keeping God. A God that makes

  97. his promises and then follows up. A God

  98. who doesn't leave us stranded, leaves us

  99. wondering, leaves us

  100. guessing if he's going to show up or if

  101. he's going to come through, but he is a

  102. promise-keeping God. He has always been

  103. a promise-keeping God and he will always

  104. be a promise-keeping God. He doesn't

  105. change and he will never break a

  106. promise. Throughout the year we've been

  107. preaching through the book of Joshua and

  108. this is the 24th, I believe this is the

  109. 24th sermon from the book of Joshua that

  110. we have preached and we're in chapter 21

  111. this morning and here's what we're going

  112. to observe from chapter 21 of the book

  113. of Joshua. In a statement. This is the

  114. sermon in a statement.

  115. We will observe how God kept all of his

  116. promises to Israel and how he keeps all

  117. of his promises to you and I. We could

  118. say it this way, the same God who kept

  119. all of his promises to his people back

  120. then is the same God that will keep his

  121. promises to his people today.

  122. So, we're just want to remind you by

  123. looking briefly at this chapter this

  124. morning

  125. that our God will keep his promises.

  126. And then we're going to conclude this

  127. sermon today. I'm going to give you a

  128. list

  129. of all of the promise Well, not all of

  130. them, but a list of promises that God

  131. has given to the New Testament local

  132. church. I'm going to remind you of them

  133. based on the fact that he's a

  134. promise-keeping God. And my goal in this

  135. is to encourage you from the word of

  136. God.

  137. Oftentimes

  138. when we come when we're talking about

  139. the land of Canaan, which is what Joshua

  140. is all about, the book of Joshua,

  141. they're conquering the land of Canaan,

  142. and you have probably heard it called

  143. this. When someone is referencing the

  144. land of Canaan, they will call it two

  145. words. They call it the promised land,

  146. right? Have you heard that phrase, the

  147. promised land? Well, they're talking

  148. about that comes from Joshua. That comes

  149. from the land that God promised the

  150. nation of Israel. And so, the land of

  151. Canaan is the promised land. Now, I

  152. understand that's become somewhat of a

  153. uh catchphrase, a buzzword in our

  154. culture, right? You pull into the

  155. Chick-fil-A parking lot and you say,

  156. "Welcome to the promised land," right?

  157. Or men, we go to Bass Pro Shops and we

  158. walk in and we say, "The promised land,"

  159. okay? Because this is a place I don't

  160. know what it is about moms, but it's

  161. Esther walks into Carter's in the mall

  162. and like it's nothing but baby clothes

  163. in there. I have no reason to go in that

  164. store whatsoever. I have never left

  165. anything in Carter's, but she goes in

  166. there and she's like, "The promised

  167. land," right? I mean, she could spend

  168. hours in there looking at baby clothes

  169. and shopping for stuff. Okay, so we've

  170. got we understand the phrase and then we

  171. understand what it's become in our

  172. culture, right? And and what we use it

  173. as in our culture is not so true to what

  174. it means in the Bible.

  175. The promised land is the land of Canaan

  176. that we've been studying for months now.

  177. But what it is for you and I is is a

  178. picture of promised living that comes

  179. only through Jesus Christ.

  180. The promised land in the Old Testament

  181. is a picture of promised living in the

  182. New Testament.

  183. It's a great picture of, if we wanted to

  184. say it very plainly, the victorious

  185. Christian life.

  186. You can live in victory. You can live

  187. joyfully. You can live encouraged and

  188. motivated in your Christian life. You

  189. can defeat sin in your Christian life,

  190. but it only comes through the person of

  191. Jesus Christ. And so as we're looking at

  192. the promised land, there there's a an

  193. ideology out there that will say that

  194. the promised land is a picture of

  195. heaven. There are some resemblances to

  196. that. I can see what how they make that

  197. argument, but I don't believe it's

  198. primarily a picture of heaven. I think

  199. the promised land, the land of Canaan,

  200. primarily is a picture of the victorious

  201. Christian life. It's you and I on this

  202. earth. We still fight battles. We still

  203. mess up. We still make mistakes, but we

  204. keep on going and we keep conquering new

  205. ground in our Christian life because of

  206. Jesus Christ our savior. Does that make

  207. sense to everybody this morning? Y'all

  208. with me so far? So we have the promised

  209. land a picture of promised living for

  210. you and I. When we come to Joshua 21,

  211. we're right in the middle of the section

  212. of the book where they are dividing all

  213. of the land. I say the middle, we're

  214. really at the end of it. Chapter 21 is

  215. really the last that we'll see of them

  216. dividing up the land. And so they're the

  217. all of the tribes have their allotment.

  218. We talked about this. We showed you a

  219. map. We pointed out all of the different

  220. tribes and and where they were and what

  221. piece of ground they got.

  222. We come to one more group of people who

  223. live in the the land of Canaan. They

  224. live in the promised land, but they

  225. don't get their own land. They don't get

  226. their own little piece of their own

  227. little plot of land that they can settle

  228. on and build.

  229. Uh this group of people is called the

  230. Levites. They were from the tribe of

  231. Levi, and they were the priest.

  232. Uh they would have been the worship

  233. leaders. They would have been the ones

  234. who served in the temple and the

  235. tabernacle. And God said, "I don't want

  236. them to have their own piece of land,

  237. but instead what I want them to do is to

  238. inhabit specific cities that will be

  239. located all throughout the land." So,

  240. instead of having one chunk of land that

  241. this is the the tribe of Levi's spot,

  242. and they all pretty much live in that

  243. area, instead of doing that, God

  244. assigned 48 cities that he scattered

  245. throughout the entire land of Canaan,

  246. the entire promised land, and the

  247. Levites were to inhabit those 48 cities.

  248. And there's some reasons for that.

  249. The the biggest reason was so that they

  250. were accessible.

  251. Uh no matter where you were in the land

  252. of Canaan, you would have been a short

  253. distance from one of these Levitical

  254. cities. So, you could have went and and

  255. learned the law, you could have went and

  256. went to church, so to speak. Uh there

  257. was a place where somebody was gifted in

  258. teaching you the Bible and could have

  259. explained the Bible to you.

  260. And that's important for us to

  261. understand. So, that That's what the the

  262. Levitical cities are. And when we come

  263. to chapter 21 of the book of Joshua, it

  264. is all about all 45 verses of it is

  265. about the division and the the assigning

  266. of these 48 cities to the Levites.

  267. So, what does that mean for you and I?

  268. Well, let's read a couple verses. I'll

  269. give you an outline, and we'll apply it,

  270. okay?

  271. Chapter 21, I want you to look at verse

  272. number three.

  273. Let's start in verse number two. The

  274. Levites show up in Shiloh where Joshua

  275. is at and they say they spake unto them

  276. at Shiloh the in the land of Canaan, the

  277. promised land saying, "The Lord

  278. commanded by the hand of Moses to give

  279. us cities to dwell in

  280. with the suburbs thereof for our

  281. cattle." And the children of Israel gave

  282. unto the Here it is, the Levites out of

  283. their inheritance at the commandment of

  284. the Lord these cities and their suburbs.

  285. And then what begins is a list of a lot

  286. of of cities, the names of those cities,

  287. the names of the tribes that those

  288. cities were assigned to. And it's a long

  289. list, several several verses long. I'm

  290. not going to take time to read all of

  291. that this morning cuz it it it would do

  292. nothing but make you laugh at how poorly

  293. I pronunciate all those names, okay? So,

  294. you go home and you poorly pronunciate

  295. those names today. But I want you to

  296. skip down to verse number 41.

  297. All the cities

  298. All the cities of the Levites within the

  299. possession of the children of Israel

  300. were 40 and eight cities with their

  301. suburbs.

  302. These cities were every one with their

  303. suburbs round about them. Thus were all

  304. these cities.

  305. And the Lord gave You notice that?

  306. Notice that phrase, "And the Lord gave

  307. unto Israel all the land which he sware

  308. to give unto their fathers and they

  309. possessed it and dwelt therein."

  310. And the Lord gave them rest round about

  311. according to all that he sware unto

  312. their fathers. And there stood not a man

  313. of all their enemies before them. The

  314. Lord delivered all their enemies into

  315. their hand. There failed not alt of any

  316. good thing which the Lord had spoken

  317. unto the house of Israel. All came to

  318. pass.

  319. God gives the nation of Israel several

  320. things in these verses and I want to do

  321. my best to quickly this morning uh give

  322. it to you so that you can think on it

  323. and uh we'll look at the promises of

  324. God. God promised Israel several things.

  325. For for hundreds of years now, Israel

  326. has been resting in the promises of God.

  327. And now we get to the end of chapter 21

  328. of the book of Joshua and all that God

  329. had promised them had come to pass. Let

  330. me write down a couple of things. Number

  331. one this morning, write down their

  332. possession.

  333. God gives them their possession. In

  334. verse 43, the Lord gave.

  335. The Lord gave. What does he give them?

  336. He gives unto Israel how much of the

  337. land? Look at your Bible and help me

  338. here this morning. How much of the land

  339. does God give them? Then the Lord gave

  340. unto Israel

  341. What's the next word?

  342. All of the land. Y'all see that? Y'all

  343. awake? You got your Bible? All right,

  344. here it is. And the Lord gave unto

  345. Israel

  346. all of the land which he sware unto

  347. their fathers and they possessed it and

  348. dwelt therein.

  349. So God is going to come through on his

  350. promise and he's going to give them all

  351. of the land that is rightly theirs. By

  352. the way, the land is still theirs.

  353. We'll just throw that in there. That's

  354. not politically

  355. uh what do they say? Um

  356. People don't like when you say that.

  357. We'll just call it that for now. They

  358. don't like that. That's not popular in

  359. our cultural cul- culture, but it's

  360. still Israel's land. Now, let me pause

  361. and I want to take you from verse 1 to

  362. verse 42 and I want to I want to give

  363. you a simple application about the

  364. Levites, okay? Verse 1 through 42 we

  365. which is all about these Levites. Who

  366. are they and why do they matter to you

  367. and I? Well, let's talk about them very

  368. quickly. The Levites had three primary

  369. functions in the Old Testament.

  370. They would be the people who would lead

  371. the nation in the worship of God.

  372. So they led the nation in the worship of

  373. God.

  374. They would also teach the nation the

  375. word of God.

  376. And they would also show the nation the

  377. way of God. All right? And I'll give you

  378. a If you want verses, uh they would lead

  379. in the worship of God.

  380. First Second Chronicles 17:9, they would

    2 Chronicles 17:9

  381. teach the word of God. First Chronicles

  382. 15 and verse 16. And they would show the

  383. way of God. Deuteronomy 33:10. So, God

    Deuteronomy 33:10

  384. sets up the Levites, the priest, the

  385. ones who would serve and and work work

  386. in the temple. He sets them up and he

  387. said, "This is your job. You're going to

  388. tell everybody what the word of God

  389. says. You're going to lead in the

  390. worship of God and you're going to show

  391. the nation the ways of God. And I'm

  392. going to scatter you all throughout the

  393. land of Canaan so that wherever the

  394. nation of Israel goes, there's a Levite

  395. close by. There's somebody who knows the

  396. Bible close by. There's a light in a

  397. dark culture something close by to help

  398. guide and direct and steer the culture

  399. and keep us grounded on the truth of

  400. God's word." Now, hopefully already

  401. you're seeing some comparisons to the

  402. Levites of the Old Testament and the

  403. local church of the New Testament,

  404. right?

  405. God said, "Hey, in the Old Testament,

  406. the Levites, I'm going to put these all

  407. throughout my nation, all throughout the

  408. nation of Israel so that they can guide

  409. and direct and ground people on what is

  410. true." Now, let me show you what the New

  411. Testament says about the local church.

  412. You and I, the local church, are

  413. supposed to lead our culture in the

  414. worship of God.

  415. First Peter chapter 2 and verse 9 says,

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  416. "You are a chosen generation, a royal

  417. priesthood." We think about priests

  418. sometimes in the Old Testament and we

  419. think, "Oh, the priest, he that's like a

  420. pastor today." There are some

  421. similarities, but really the priesthood

  422. of the Old Testament it is the church of

  423. the New Testament. We are a royal

  424. priesthood. Not just me, we together.

  425. Not just the preacher. I'm not the one

  426. who's supposed to lead in the worship of

  427. of our culture. Not alone. We are

  428. supposed to do that corporately as the

  429. local church. We're a royal priesthood,

  430. a holy nation, a peculiar people that we

  431. should show forth the praises of him who

  432. has called us out of darkness into his

  433. marvelous light. Why does a church

  434. gather on a Sunday morning and sing so

  435. many songs?

  436. Well, because we are supposed to be the

  437. lighthouse to a culture that shows them

  438. what it looks like to worship our God.

  439. And if you don't show up to church on

  440. Sunday, and your lost neighbor or your

  441. lost co-worker sees you mowing your lawn

  442. instead of worshiping your God on a

  443. Sunday morning,

  444. what does that say to them about where

  445. the culture culture needs to be when it

  446. comes to worship? You are the example.

  447. You are the ones who lead the culture,

  448. lead the nation in worship of God. And

  449. if it's not important to you and I, it

  450. will never be important to them.

  451. Number two, not only do we lead in the

  452. worship of God, but the local church is

  453. to teach the word of God.

  454. First Timothy 3 and verse 15,

  455. says that the church is the pillar and

  456. the ground of truth.

  457. The church is the pillar and the ground

  458. of truth. And I can't stay here long.

  459. I've got to move We could preach this

  460. This could be a whole sermon in of

  461. itself. But I'll just say it in one

  462. statement this morning. If a church does

  463. not live by, preach, uphold, open their

  464. Bible on a Sunday morning, leave the

  465. church.

  466. It's not a church. I told this to the

  467. usher the other day. It's not a church.

  468. It's a gathering of people who want to

  469. feel good about themselves by being

  470. religious. If the Bible is not at the

  471. center, it's not a church. Why? Because

  472. God said the definition of a church

  473. is a place that is the pillar and ground

  474. of truth. Meaning the pillar, we hold up

  475. truth, and the ground, everything we do

  476. is grounded in scripture. We are the

  477. pillar and ground of truth. Everything

  478. comes from the word of God. That's why

  479. this morning when we observed the Lord's

  480. Supper, I took you to 1 Corinthians 11,

  481. and I walked you through what the Bible

  482. says about the Lord's Supper. Cuz this

  483. isn't just me trying to be traditional

  484. or trying to do something No, this is

  485. Bible. It's the pillar and ground of

  486. truth. So, if a church If you ever come

  487. across the church online or in person,

  488. and and they're doing things that are

  489. against the Bible, or they get up there

  490. and they sing a whole bunch of stuff and

  491. they dance around, but they never open

  492. the Bible, leave that church.

  493. Leave that church. It's not a church.

  494. Don't even call it a church. It's a

  495. group of people. And I don't mean no

  496. disrespect to anybody,

  497. but they have they have abandoned the

  498. definition of a church, so they

  499. literally are not a church. Does this

  500. make sense?

  501. Y'all think I'm mad at everybody now?

  502. Okay.

  503. All right. Number three, where we at?

  504. Okay, that where the local church leads

  505. in the worship of God, the local church

  506. teaches the word of God. Number three,

  507. the local church is to show the ways of

  508. God.

  509. You and I set the example for the

  510. culture. Matthew 5:16, let your light so

    Matthew 5:16

  511. shine before men that they may see your

  512. good works and glorify your father which

  513. is in heaven.

  514. Okay.

  515. Levites, verse 1 through 42. What do

  516. they mean for you and I? Well, you and I

  517. are the New Testament Levites.

  518. So, we lead in worship,

  519. we teach the word, and we demonstrate

  520. the ways of God.

  521. That was the mini sermon within the

  522. sermon. All right. Now, we'll go on

  523. through the rest of this. So, they have

  524. their possession. They're possessing the

  525. land in verse 43, the Lord gave Israel

  526. all the land which he swore to give them

  527. by their fathers.

  528. Genesis chapter 12, God promises

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  529. Abraham, "Abraham, I'm going to give

  530. your descendants a land. It's going to

  531. be their land." Joshua 21, God has kept

  532. his promise.

  533. I want you to get this now. This is

  534. going to matter for the rest of the

  535. morning that we rest of the time we have

  536. together.

  537. Genesis 12, God promises it. Joshua 21,

  538. promise fulfilled. Y'all got that? Real

  539. simple.

  540. God keeps his promises.

  541. By the way,

  542. the same God who kept his promises to

  543. his people back then

  544. is the same God who keeps his promises

  545. to his people today.

  546. And if God can keep his promise to

  547. Abraham

  548. through Joshua, then God can keep his

  549. promise to you and I that he's made in

  550. his word.

  551. So, we see that they have possessed the

  552. Levites, they possessed the land, and

  553. then in and there's one other thing I

  554. want you to notice before I move on to

  555. the next thing, and that is the Lord.

  556. Did you know that uh it there are six

  557. references?

  558. 1 2 3

  559. 4 5 6 7. Excuse me, I misspoke. Seven

  560. references in this chapter to Yahweh.

  561. You might want to underline them or

  562. highlight them in your Bible. In verse

  563. number two, the Lord commanded.

  564. Now, notice in your Bible, Lord is all

  565. capital letters. That is the Jehovah

  566. covenant name for God. The the name

  567. Yahweh. It's the covenant name for God.

  568. They They call this name the

  569. It It's got a really fancy word if you

  570. get if you get into uh theology and

  571. start studying this. It's called the

  572. ineffable tetragrammaton.

  573. That's what they call this.

  574. Because in ancient Hebrew, they were not

  575. allowed to say it.

  576. Ineffable. They could not speak this

  577. name. Lord. Yahweh. I am. It was so

  578. high, so reverent, they wouldn't say it

  579. with their mouth. And when they come

  580. when they were writing when the scribes

  581. were writing the Old Testament, and they

  582. came to this name,

  583. which is marked in your King James Bible

  584. with all capital letters.

  585. When they would come to this name for

  586. God, the covenant name for God, the

  587. scribe would have to pause. He would

  588. throw that pen away. He would go take a

  589. bath. He would put on a new change of

  590. clothes. He would get new ink. He would

  591. get a new pen. And then, and only then,

  592. could he write the name. It was so high

  593. and so reverent and so holy. They had to

  594. do that seven times just to get through

  595. chapter 21 of the book of Joshua.

  596. Every time they come to that name, they

  597. pause.

  598. And they go bathe themselves, and they

  599. get new clothes, and new quill, and new

  600. ink.

  601. It's so high and so holy. And yet, seven

  602. times in this chapter, God inspires that

  603. they write that name. Why? Because he's

  604. communicating to them, "Hey, I am with

  605. you.

  606. I am with you.

  607. I am with you. It's in verse two, it's

  608. in verse three.

  609. It's in verse eight.

  610. You find it again in verse 43.

  611. Two times in verse 44.

  612. And again in verse 45. It's all through

  613. this chapter. All through Joshua 21. You

  614. keep seeing the name, the covenant name,

  615. the most holy name of God. Yahweh,

  616. Jehovah, the Lord.

  617. God said, "Hey, I'm still with you." Do

  618. you remember all the way back in Joshua

  619. chapter one? Think with me.

  620. Don't lose me now.

  621. Joshua chapter one, verse number nine.

  622. What did God tell Joshua?

  623. He said, "Joshua, have not I commanded

  624. you be strong and of a good courage. Be

  625. not afraid, neither be dismayed. Why

  626. not? For the Lord your God goes with you

  627. whithersoever you go." God made a

  628. promise. Y'all with me? God made a

  629. promise in Joshua chapter one to a to

  630. Joshua, the new leader, and said,

  631. "Joshua, I'm going to go with you.

  632. Wherever you go, I'm going to be with

  633. you." Joshua 21, years later, guess

  634. who's still showing up? Seven times in

  635. the chapter.

  636. The Lord. Promise made in chapter one.

  637. Promise kept

  638. in chapter 21.

  639. All that to say something very simple.

  640. Our God is a promise-keeping

  641. God.

  642. So, we see their possession.

  643. The Levites, the land, the Lord. Notice

  644. number two.

  645. Not only do we see their possession, but

  646. what else did God give them? Well, God

  647. gives them peace.

  648. Look at verse number 44.

  649. And the Lord gave, here's that phrase

  650. again, the Lord gave them What did he

  651. give them? He gave them rest. You see

  652. that?

  653. He gave them rest. Rest from what? He

  654. gave them rest round about according to

  655. all that he swear unto their fathers.

  656. Okay, so God has apparently at some

  657. point before

  658. Y'all awake? We're Bible study this

  659. morning. I know this isn't as as punchy

  660. as some sermons, but stay with me cuz I

  661. promise it's worth it.

  662. God at some point has made a promise

  663. to this people

  664. that he was going to give them rest from

  665. their enemies.

  666. Now, all through the book of Joshua,

  667. they've been fighting battles. And can

  668. you imagine them thinking,

  669. "Where's the rest at? When is this going

  670. to be done? When are we going to stop

  671. fighting the battles? When are we going

  672. to get through this? Is this ever going

  673. to be over?" Joshua chapter 21, guess

    Joshua 21 chapter mention

  674. what happens? Rest.

  675. God said, "Okay, the battle's done.

  676. Fighting's over. I'm going to give you

  677. rest." Here's the reference, Exodus

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  678. chapter 23 and verse number 23. Years

  679. before,

  680. God said, "Hey, I'm going to give you

  681. rest from your enemies." Here's what he

  682. says specifically, "My angel shall go

  683. before thee and bring thee into the unto

  684. the Amorites and the Hittites and the

  685. Perizzites and the Canaanites and the

  686. Hivites and the Jebusites, and I will

  687. cut them off."

  688. God said, "They're not going to bother

  689. you anymore. I'm going to cut them off.

  690. We're going to give you peace. We're

  691. going to give you rest."

  692. Can I say it real simply this morning?

  693. Exodus chapter 23, verse 23, promise

    Exodus 23:23

  694. made.

  695. Joshua chapter 21,

    Joshua 21 chapter mention

  696. promise kept.

  697. He's a promise- keeping

  698. God.

  699. And just as God promised to give his

  700. people peace then, so God has promised

  701. his people peace now.

  702. Philippians 4 and verse 7, "And the

  703. peace of God, which passes all

  704. understanding, shall keep your hearts

  705. and minds through Christ Jesus."

  706. You don't have to live in anxiety and

  707. worry all the time. The God of peace has

  708. promised that if you will trust in him,

  709. he will give you peace.

  710. Let me give you number three, and I'm

  711. almost done. I promise these will go

  712. really quickly. Number three, their

  713. protection.

  714. God gives them their possession, God

  715. gives them their peace, and now God

  716. gives them protection. But continuing in

  717. verse 44, "There stood not a man of all

  718. their enemies before them. The Lord

  719. delivered all their enemies into their

  720. hands." God had promised them years

  721. before that this would happen.

  722. Back in Exodus 23 and verse 27 and 28, I

  723. will send my fear before them and I will

  724. destroy all the people to whom thou

  725. shalt come, and I will make all thine

  726. enemies turn their backs on thee, and I

  727. will send hornets before thee which

  728. shall drive out the Hivite and the

  729. Canaanite and the Hittite from before

  730. thee.

  731. Years before God said, "I'm going to

  732. make you a promise. I'm going to deliver

  733. you from the Canaanites. I'm going to

  734. drive them out. I'm going to cut them

  735. off. I'm going to destroy them and I'm

  736. going to deliver you." That was in

  737. Exodus 23.

  738. Joshua chapter 21, God said, "It's

    Joshua 21 chapter mention

  739. done."

  740. Promise made,

  741. promise kept.

  742. You all You all with me so far this

  743. morning?

  744. Let's Let's look at one more.

  745. Their prosperity in verse 45.

  746. They're rich.

  747. Verse 45, God's going to tell them you

  748. are wealthy.

  749. He said, "There failed not alt any good

  750. thing which the Lord had spoken unto the

  751. house of Israel. All came to pass."

  752. Everything. Just going to summarize it.

  753. I guess maybe there was just too much to

  754. write. If we just kept naming off all

  755. the things that God promised and all the

  756. things that God did, it would have been

  757. the rest of the Bible with just

  758. recording what God did and the promises

  759. kept to Israel. So, they're just going

  760. to summarize the rest of it in verse 45.

  761. And what do they say? "There failed not

  762. any good thing from the Lord had spoken.

  763. All came to pass. Everything that God

  764. had said came to pass. Every promise

  765. that he had made, he kept. Every time he

  766. said he'd come through, he came through.

  767. Every time he said he'd make a way, he

  768. made a way. Every time he said to trust

  769. him and they trusted him. God moved on

  770. their behalf. Every battle, God God

  771. worked with them. Every time they felt

  772. they were alone, God showed up. Every

  773. word that he spoke was true." By the

  774. way, we'll just pause very quickly and

  775. say every word that God has spoken to

  776. you and I is true.

  777. Don't need anything else.

  778. This is sufficient.

  779. The nation of Israel was rich because of

  780. who their God was.

  781. Now, listen.

  782. Let's bring all of this together. We'll

  783. bring it home.

  784. We'll be done.

  785. You and I have no business

  786. walking around

  787. calling ourselves Christians

  788. acting like

  789. a sad country song.

  790. Right? You understand what I mean by

  791. that? You heard a sad country song

  792. lately?

  793. Truck's broke, dog died, wife left,

  794. barn burnt. Yeah.

  795. It's sad country song.

  796. It's awful. You're like, man,

  797. you must really be going through it over

  798. there, right?

  799. And I talk to Christians all the time

  800. and they they walk around living their

  801. life like they're trying to live out a

  802. sad country song and it's like, how's

  803. your day going? And they're like, well,

  804. it's just not been that good, really.

  805. Pretty sad.

  806. This happened and that happened and that

  807. happened and this happened and and and

  808. and I just don't know what I'm supposed

  809. to do anymore.

  810. Well, I'm sorry. Are you saved?

  811. Do you have the Holy Spirit of God

  812. living on the inside of you? Did Jesus

  813. not die for your sins? Are you not on

  814. your way to heaven?

  815. I mean, we've got so much to be thankful

  816. for, but how often do we focus on the

  817. negative instead of the positive?

  818. Can I give you some promises of God

  819. as we conclude this morning

  820. that just as he kept his promises to his

  821. people back then,

  822. so he will keep his promises to his

  823. people today.

  824. And don't go walking around this

  825. afternoon angry at the waiter at the

  826. restaurant, upset at the the person

  827. that's ringing you up at the store,

  828. but go around with the joy of the Lord,

  829. a smile on your face because the God who

  830. has promised it in his word will keep

  831. his word. Here we go. Ready?

  832. I'm just going to name them. Not going

  833. to talk about them. I'm just going to

  834. name them. 2 Peter chapter 1 and verse 4

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  835. sets the foundation for us.

  836. Peter says that we have great, exceeding

  837. great, and precious promises. Okay, what

  838. are they? Well, first of all, he's

  839. promised us salvation. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  840. and Ephesians chapter 2, and we could go

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  841. through a whole bunch of passages. God

  842. has promised to save those who believe

  843. on his name. Whosoever

  844. whosoever shall call on the name of the

  845. Lord shall be saved. It's not a maybe,

  846. it's not a hope so, it's not a might.

  847. No, God will save you if you trust in

  848. Jesus Christ. You trust in his finished

  849. work on the cross, you will be saved.

  850. He's promised salvation. He's promised

  851. sanctification.

  852. He's not going to leave you the way he

  853. finds you. Aren't you thankful for that?

  854. I was a Listen, you you Some of you were

  855. saved out of drugs and alcohol and and

  856. and God has turned your life around and

  857. you've got a testimony and and God has

  858. been so good to you. What is that?

  859. That's a promise of God that if you

  860. trust in Jesus, he's going to begin to

  861. change you from the inside out.

  862. Promise of sanctification. How about a

  863. promise of glorification? We sang about

  864. this this morning. There's coming a day

  865. when he's going to come out of the

  866. heavens. He's going to call his church.

  867. We're going to go up. We're going to

  868. meet him in the air when that trumpet

  869. sounds. And in a moment, in the

  870. twinkling of an eye, Thessalonians says,

  871. we will be changed into a glorified

  872. body. Oh, yes, I understand that on this

  873. earth we deal with hard times and we

  874. deal with sin and we deal with the flesh

  875. and we have we have to deal with all of

  876. these things.

  877. But there is a promise of God that he is

  878. coming back for his church. And if he

  879. has promised it, he will do it. Cuz he's

  880. a promise-keeping God. So, there's a

  881. promise of glorification. There's a

  882. promise of heaven in John 14 and verse

  883. 6. There's a promise of his presence in

  884. Hebrews chapter 13 and verse 5.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  885. He said, "I'm going to be with you. I

  886. will never leave you or forsake you."

  887. You remember what he told Joshua in

  888. chapter 1 and verse 9? "I'm going to be

  889. with you." And then in chapter 21, he

  890. showed up. Guess what? In In chapter 13,

  891. God makes the same promise to the New

  892. Testament church. I'm never going to

  893. leave you and I'm never going to forsake

  894. you. So, when you wake up and you feel

  895. all alone, take heart. You've got a

  896. promise-keeping God who has said he is

  897. there. So, whether you feel like he's

  898. there or not, you can rest in the fact

  899. that he said it and therefore it is

  900. true.

  901. Promise-keeping God.

  902. How about this one? Promise of his

  903. provision in Philippians 4 and verse 19.

  904. He said he's going to take care of you.

  905. He's going to provide for your needs.

  906. The promise of his drawing all men in

  907. John 12 and verse 32. He He said, "I'm

  908. going to draw all men unto myself."

  909. How about the promise of peace in John

  910. 14 and verse 27? How about the promise

  911. of strength and help in Isaiah 41 and

  912. verse 10? How about the promise of

  913. eternal life in John 3 and verse 16? How

  914. about this promise? The promise that he

  915. will build his church in Matthew 16:18.

    Matthew 16:18

  916. "I will build my church," Jesus said.

  917. How about the promise of his protecting

  918. his church in Matthew 16:18b? How about

  919. the promise of his unending mercy in 1

    1 John 1:9

  920. John 1:9? The promise of his guidance in

  921. Proverbs 3:5 and 6? The promise of

    Proverbs 3:5

  922. comfort through trials in 2 Corinthians

  923. 1? The promise of victory over sin in 1

    1 Corinthians 15:58

  924. Corinthians 15:58? The promise that all

  925. things work together for good for for to

  926. those who love God, to those who are the

  927. called according to his purpose in

  928. Romans 8:28? How about the promise of

    Romans 8:28

  929. rest

  930. in Matthew 11 and verse 28 through 30?

  931. We could go on and on and on. Do you

  932. understand what I'm trying to say this

  933. morning?

  934. Promise made.

  935. Promise kept.

  936. You wake up and you're discouraged

  937. and you're anxious

  938. and you're worried

  939. and you don't know how it's going to

  940. work out.

  941. I know how it's going to work out.

  942. What is this world coming to? Have you

  943. ever wondered that? What is this world

  944. coming to?

  945. I'll tell you exactly what it's coming

  946. to.

  947. It's coming to the feet of Jesus.

  948. You can come. Philippians says that at

  949. that

  950. there's coming a day when every knee

  951. will bow

  952. and every tongue will confess

  953. that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory

  954. of God the Father.

  955. What is happening in this world? What's

  956. it all coming to?

  957. But but the doctor gives you a bad

  958. diagnosis. What's the end result of

  959. that? The worst thing that can happen

  960. [music] to a child of God is you leave

  961. this earth and you enter the eternal

  962. presence of your savior.

  963. Promise made,

  964. promise kept.

  965. Do you know that Christ God always heals

  966. Christians?

  967. There's never been a Christian who had a

  968. disease that God did not heal them.

  969. Sometimes he heals their body.

  970. Sometimes he heals them by giving them a

  971. new body.

  972. But every child of God gets healed.

  973. Promise made,

  974. promise kept.

  975. We serve a God who is so big and so good

  976. that you don't have to doubt,

  977. that you don't have to worry, that you

  978. don't have to be anxious. You have a God

  979. that you can trust in this morning.

  980. And I don't know what you may have

  981. walked in here with and what you might

  982. be facing and what might be in the back

  983. of your mind and you're wondering and

  984. you're worried and you're upset and you

  985. don't know how this situation's going to

  986. work out and you don't know how that

  987. finance financial problem is going to

  988. resolve itself and you don't know how

  989. that relationship is going to be fixed

  990. and and you don't know how you can keep

  991. just being a good Christian because the

  992. harder you try it seems like the more

  993. you fail and you just don't understand

  994. God, you said that you were going to

  995. perfect me. You said you were going to

  996. complete in me the work that you started

  997. and I just don't know what to do

  998. anymore. And I don't know what what you

  999. might be facing but here's what I do

1000. know, the character of our God will

1001. never fail and if he's made a promise

  1002. he'll keep the promise.

1003. So stop resting in yourself.

1004. And just start resting in the character

  1005. of our God.

  1006. He's big enough.

  1007. He'll get you through.

  1008. Father,

1009. pray that you take your word, apply it

1010. to our hearts this morning.

1011. All I can do is communicate what you've

1012. already given us, and I pray that I've

1013. not confused anyone. I would hate to do

  1014. that.

1015. I've had to go quickly this morning,

1016. Lord, and I pray that that

1017. in my haste I have not confused anyone

  1018. or miscommunicated anything.

1019. Pray that you would take your word.

1020. Remind us of this simple truth.

1021. Just as you kept all your promises to

  1022. your people back then,

1023. so you will keep all your promises to

  1024. your people

  1025. today.

  1026. I love you, Lord.

1027. We're going to take just a moment, and

1028. she's going to play, and

1029. just want you to whatever you need to

1030. leave in God's hands. Whatever it might

  1031. be.

1032. Whatever it is that you're worried

1033. about, that you're thinking about, that

1034. you're praying about, would you just

  1035. give it to God?

1036. Just say, "Lord, today I'm recommitting

  1037. to just trust you."

1038. While Christians are praying all around

1039. right now, I just wonder if there's

  1040. anyone here today,

1041. and nobody's looking, just me,

  1042. that you say, "Pastor John, I'm I'm 100%

  1043. sure

1044. that I'm even on my way to heaven.

1045. I know I want to go to heaven,

1046. but I don't remember a moment in my life

  1047. where I

1048. asked Jesus to be my savior and [music]

1049. I trusted completely in him. If that's

1050. you this morning, you do not know for

1051. sure that you're on your way to heaven,

1052. I want you just to slip your hand up.

  1053. Nobody's looking but me

1054. and God, he already knows.

  1055. Wonderful.

1056. Based on your testimony, we're all saved

1057. here. Means we've got some great,

1058. exceeding great, and precious promises.
