  1. I'm not going to distract myself. I'm

  2. just going to use this. All right.

  3. Joshua 22 this morning. Joshua chapter

    Joshua 22 chapter mention

  4. 22.

  5. Here's a thought I want to give to you

  6. today. How to have a godly home.

  7. How to have a godly home. Let's pray.

  8. Ask the Lord to help us and then we'll

  9. jump into the text this morning. Father,

  10. we come before you today in the name of

  11. Jesus. And Lord, I am so grateful for

  12. the day that you have given us. It's

  13. just been a good day in your house.

  14. Lord, I'm thankful for my family.

  15. Thank you for my wife and my children

  16. who love you, who love church.

  17. I pray they'd never lose that

  18. as they get older and the world begins

  19. to influence them more and more.

  20. I pray they would never lose their love

  21. for you and their love for church.

  22. Thank you for this ministry. Thank you

  23. for this church that you let me pastor.

  24. Lord, you you've been so good to us.

  25. You've been far better to me than I

  26. deserve.

  27. I pray now as we open the Bible for a

  28. few moments. Lord, this is something

  29. that we're going to talk about today.

  30. You know my heart on this. I'm burdened

  31. about this topic.

  32. And Lord, it it's a simple message. I

  33. pray you just take it, not my words, but

  34. take your word and move it on the hearts

  35. of the people who are here today.

  36. Do what no man or no message, no sermon

  37. could ever do.

  38. I pray that you change people to love

  39. you more, love this world less, to give

  40. you all the glory and all the praise. If

  41. there's anyone here who this morning is

  42. not 100% sure that they're on their way

  43. to heaven, then Father, I pray that

  44. today, even right now as I'm praying,

  45. Lord, that you would convict their

  46. heart, show them their need of a savior,

  47. help them to call on the name of the

  48. Lord before they leave this place today.

  49. Whatever you do in these next moments,

  50. we will be very careful to give you all

  51. the glory, all the praise, and all the

  52. honor. We love you. We thank you for

  53. Jesus. And we ask these things in his

  54. name. Amen. We come this morning to

  55. Joshua chapter 22 and we have to

    Joshua 22 chapter mention

  56. remember some something from a few uh

  57. chapters back, a few weeks back. We

  58. talked about two and a half tribes. Do

  59. you remember the two and a half tribes

  60. who got a different land aotment than

  61. the other tribes? The other nine and a

  62. half. There's two and a half tribes who

  63. received land on the east side of the

  64. Jordan River. Right? Most of the land of

  65. Canaan lies between the Jordan River on

  66. its eastern side and then what they

  67. would have called the great sea on its

  68. western side and between those two there

  69. is the land of Israel, the land of

  70. Canaan. Most of the tribes would get

  71. their allotments, their land division in

  72. that section of the world. And we showed

  73. a map a few weeks ago and we pointed out

  74. where each tribe's aotment was and and

  75. we noticed each of the uh not that map,

  76. different map. I [clears throat] don't

  77. know if I put it in there. I'm sorry.

  78. That was a good map, too. I like that.

  79. We showed that map before. That was a

  80. good map, too. Um, so we showed where

  81. all of the different aotments were at.

  82. Okay. There's nine and a half tribes of

  83. Israel. 12 tribes total. Nine and a half

  84. of them have their land between the

  85. Jordan River and the the sea. Two and a

  86. half of those tribes got their land on

  87. the east side of the Jordan River. Now,

  88. here was the arrangement. They made this

  89. deal with Moses long before they ever

  90. came into the promised land. Here was

  91. the deal. They said, "Moses, we want our

  92. land to be on this side of the Jordan

  93. River." And Moses said, 'Okay, that's

  94. fine. You can have your land on that

  95. side of the Jordan River, but there is

  96. one thing that I need you to do for me

  97. in order to make this happen. You have

  98. got to come across the Jordan River with

  99. all of your fighting men, and you have

  100. to help your brothers fight until the

  101. land of Canaan is conquered. And then

  102. once we've conquered all of the

  103. Canaanites, we've conquered all of the

  104. enemies in the land of Canaan, then you

  105. will be free to go back home, go back

  106. across the Jordan River to the land that

  107. I have promised you on that side. So

  108. that was the arrangement. And there's a

  109. great application in there, by the way,

  110. that you and I as brothers and sisters

  111. in Christ ought to help one another

  112. fight our battles, ought to help one

  113. another conquer our enemies. And uh so

  114. there's we talked about this. I think we

  115. preached even a whole sermon on that and

  116. helping one another and what the local

  117. church is called to do. Well, they've

  118. been fighting together for chapters now

  119. and we haven't heard anything about them

  120. for a few chapters now. And now they

  121. come back up in chapter 22 and Joshua is

  122. going to go to these two and a half

  123. tribes and he's going to say, "Okay

  124. guys, we made a deal. You have kept your

  125. end of the deal. You have helped us

  126. fight. You've helped us clean out the

  127. land. We've conquered most of the

  128. Canaanites. We have peace now in our

  129. land. And so you may go home." And these

  130. two and a half tribes are going to go

  131. across the Jordan River and go back

  132. home. And all of chapter 22 is about

  133. that. We're going to break it into two

  134. sermons. This morning, we're going to

  135. look at the first uh six, seven, maybe

  136. eight verses. And then next Sunday,

  137. we're going to finish it with the altar

  138. called Ed, which is a fascinating story

  139. in and of itself. So, I'm going to give

  140. it its own sermon. So, this morning,

  141. we're in Joshua 22. Look at verse number

  142. one. Then Joshua called the Reubenites

  143. and the Gadites and half the tribe of

  144. Manasseh. Okay? two and a half tribes.

  145. The Reubenites, that's one tribe. The

  146. Gadites, that's one tribe, and half of

  147. the tribe of Manasseh, that's your two

  148. and a half tribes. And he said unto

  149. them, "You have kept all that Moses, the

  150. servant of the Lord, commanded you, and

  151. you have obeyed my voice and all that I

  152. have commanded you. You have not left

  153. your brethren these many days unto this

  154. day, but have kept the charge of the

  155. commandment of the Lord your God."

  156. What's he saying? Hey, you've been

  157. fighting right alongside of them. You've

  158. been fighting right alongside of them.

  159. You've kept the word of the Lord. You've

  160. kept your agreement. You've kept the

  161. arrangement. Good job. Congratulations,

  162. you've done well. Verse number four. And

  163. now the Lord your God has given rest

  164. unto your brothers. Praise the Lord for

  165. that. As he promised them. Hey, now

  166. there's rest in the land. Your brothers

  167. who are on the west side of the Jordan

  168. River. We have peace. We have rest. All

  169. is calm. And and I like the little

  170. phrase, those four little words that he

  171. includes. As he promised them. Last week

  172. we preached a whole sermon on the

  173. promisekeeping God. And here again in

  174. the next chapter, the next few verses,

  175. we see once again he's a promisekeeping

  176. God. He said, 'Now therefore, return you

  177. and get you unto your tents and unto the

  178. land of your possession, which Moses,

  179. the servant of the Lord, gave you on the

  180. other side of the Jordan." So Joshua

  181. gets them all together and he says, "All

  182. right guys, you've done well. You've

  183. kept what God told you to keep. You've

  184. obeyed the commandment. You fought

  185. alongside your brethren and and look,

  186. God's given us great peace over here.

  187. Great rest. the land is at rest. There's

  188. not a whole lot of fighting going on

  189. now. So, you can go home. Have you ever

  190. um uh we have this problem in the south.

  191. I think it's more of an issue the

  192. further south that you go. It's somewhat

  193. of it's not an issue. It's it's fun. Um

  194. but it's more of a thing, I guess, the

  195. further south that you go. And we do it

  196. a little bit around here. How many of

  197. you go visit a family member, mom or

  198. dad, and when you go, you you have a a

  199. drive to make, and so you show up at

  200. their house, and you spend the time, you

  201. have your holiday, your Christmas, your

  202. Thanksgiving, whatever it might be. And

  203. then it's time to leave. And so you all

  204. walk out as a unit onto the porch and

  205. down to the car, and you you hug them

  206. like three times on the way. Goodbye.

  207. Goodbye. I'll see you next time. I'll

  208. see you next time. And then you get to

  209. the car and goodbye. I'll see you next

  210. time. Goodbye. I'll see you next. And it

  211. just keeps going. And and then we just

  212. keep saying goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

  213. And then you finally get in the car and

  214. it's time to go and dad says or mom

  215. says, "I forgot to tell you

  216. or I forgot to show you." And you spend

  217. another 15, 20 minutes walking back

  218. around and looking at whatever it was or

  219. having a whole another conversation

  220. about what it was and then it's time to

  221. leave again and you go to get back IN

  222. THE CAR. OH, I FORGOT TO TELL YOU one

  223. more thing. One more thing. One more

  224. thing. I got to tell you one more thing.

  225. Y'all know what I'm talking about. Is

  226. this does this happen around here? Is

  227. that is that a mountain thing, too?

  228. Yeah, definitely a southern thing. I

  229. think that's kind of what takes place in

  230. Joshua 22. Joshua gets these two and a

  231. half tribes. He gets them all together

  232. and he said, "Good job, guys. You've

  233. done well. It's time to go home. You can

  234. go back to your your home. Go back to

  235. your tents. Go back to the other side of

  236. Jordan. Good job. Good job.

  237. Congratulations. Great job." And now

  238. they're ready to leave. And Joshua says,

  239. "But one more thing. I got to tell you

  240. one more thing. Look at it. Verse number

  241. five.

  242. He said, "But

  243. take diligent heed to do the

  244. commandments and the law which Moses,

  245. the servant of the Lord, charged you, to

  246. love the Lord your God, to walk in all

  247. of his ways, to keep his commandments,

  248. to cleave unto him, and to serve him

  249. with all your heart, with all your

  250. soul." So Joshua blessed them and sent

  251. them away, and they went unto their

  252. tents. What does Joshua tell them? He

  253. said, "Hey guys, good job.

  254. Congratulations. You can go home. Wait,

  255. wait, wait, wait. I got one more thing

  256. that I got to tell you. And he gives

  257. them verse number five. And it is a

  258. fascinating verse. It's our text for

  259. this morning. We're going to look at

  260. just this one verse. Joshua tells the

  261. two and a half tribes, he's going to

  262. tell them exactly how to take the God

  263. that they have been serving over here

  264. back home with them and keep serving him

  265. over there. And this morning as your

  266. pastor, I want to communicate to you the

  267. words of the Bible. And I want to tell

  268. you how to take the God that we have

  269. been worshiping here home with you when

  270. you leave in a little bit and continue

  271. worshiping and serving him there. How to

  272. have God in your home. Let's look at it

  273. together. Verse number five, the

  274. wonderful verse. I've got three points,

  275. but most of the most of the verse will

  276. land in the last point. Okay, look at

  277. number one. You can write this down. The

  278. work. Number one, the work. Look at it.

  279. Verse five, he said, "But take diligent

  280. heed to do." You see that first line in

  281. your ver in your Bible? There is some

  282. passion behind those words. Take

  283. diligent heed to do. Hey, there's going

  284. to be some work for you. Joshua says,

  285. "Oh, I forgot to tell you something."

  286. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Let me

  287. give you one more thing. Let me tell you

  288. one more thing.

  289. You're going to have some work to do

  290. when you get home.

  291. And church this morning, it is not going

  292. to happen overnight just like that for

  293. you to come to church on Sunday and then

  294. just expect God to show up in your home

  295. on Monday. There's some work that you're

  296. going to have to do when you leave this

  297. place and you get back to your home

  298. place. You're going to have to be on

  299. purpose about getting God in your home.

  300. Look at these two words that he uses. I

  301. want you to notice them in the verse. He

  302. said, "But take," here's one of them,

  303. "Diligent." You see that word in your

  304. Bible, "Take diligent." That means, this

  305. is a wonderful little word. It means

  306. power.

  307. It means to the highest degree.

  308. Joshua said, "I want you to make your

  309. first priority

  310. this work of getting God in your home.

  311. Take diligent heed." What does that word

  312. heed mean? That's the second word I want

  313. to draw your attention to. Take diligent

  314. that is power first priority to the

  315. highest degree to the highest level

  316. level. And then what are you going to

  317. do? You're going to heed. What does that

  318. mean? It means keep, watch over,

  319. protect. I want you to give the highest

  320. priority to protecting God in your home.

  321. I want you to give the highest priority

  322. to protecting and doing the Bible in

  323. your home.

  324. It's going to take some work. You're

  325. going to have to be diligent. You're

  326. going to have to be on purpose about it.

  327. You're going to have to make some

  328. changes. You're going to have to set

  329. some boundaries. You're going to have to

  330. do some things and say, "That's not

  331. allowed in my home, and that's not

  332. allowed in my home, and we don't say

  333. that inside of this home, and we don't

  334. listen to that inside of this home." And

  335. and we don't go there because we are

  336. prioritizing to the highest level more

  337. than anything else. Number one priority

  338. in our home is to protect the things of

  339. God.

  340. It's going to take some work. We've got

  341. this idea in our culture that we can go

  342. to Hobby Lobby and buy a cute little

  343. sign that says, "In God we trust and put

  344. it up on the shelf and now we've got God

  345. in our home."

  346. Right? I hate to break it to you, that

  347. little sign has nothing to do with God.

  348. It's not so easy. There is a world

  349. outside of your home. There's a devil

  350. outside of your home who is doing

  351. everything within his power. He is doing

  352. everything that he can to distract and

  353. get your children and your grandchildren

  354. and your nieces and your nephews and

  355. even your husband or your wife

  356. distracted and off course and away from

  357. God and away from you. And listen, we

  358. need some parents. We need some moms,

  359. some dads, some grandmas, some grandpas,

  360. some aunts, and some uncles who will

  361. say, "In my home, in my house, we work

  362. really hard to make God number one.

  363. It's not something that we just kind of

  364. put on the side." And yeah, we go to

  365. church on a Sunday and we worship God on

  366. Sunday and then we get home on Monday

  367. and we can watch whatever we want and we

  368. can listen to whatever we want and we

  369. can act however we want and we can have

  370. over whoever we want. There's got to be

  371. some boundaries. And listen, it's going

  372. to take some work. How many of you know

  373. that work hurts sometimes?

  374. It does.

  375. You got some friends

  376. and you're going to have to say, "Hey,

  377. we'll come your your kids can come to my

  378. house, but my kids ain't going to your

  379. house."

  380. Setting a boundary. And listen, there is

  381. nothing wrong with saying that for the

  382. sake of your children. There's nothing

  383. wrong with saying that. You don't have

  384. to be rude about it. You don't have to

  385. be mean about it, but you can set some

  386. boundaries.

  387. You can put in some work. How about

  388. this? You're tired. You worked. You

  389. don't want to. You you you're you're

  390. sleepy and you get home and

  391. it's important that you pray with your

  392. wife.

  393. It's important that you pray with your

  394. husband.

  395. It's important that you put in the work

  396. and communicate and talk about the

  397. things of God and talk about the ways of

  398. God and open your Bibles and have Bible

  399. discussions in your home. Well, I'm

  400. uncomfortable talking about that. Get

  401. uncomfortable.

  402. It's not going to always be easy. He

  403. said, "Be diligent. Put in the work. Put

  404. in the effort. The little Hobby Lobby

  405. sign is fine and dandy and it might look

  406. real good, but it is not doing anything

  407. to get God in your home.

  408. Joshua looks at these tribes and he

  409. says, "It's time for you guys to go back

  410. home, but you better work real hard to

  411. make sure you take the God you're

  412. serving over here back home with you

  413. over there."

  414. and church. I see all of the time in

  415. churches like ours, families who come to

  416. church, grandmas and grandpas who come

  417. to church, aunts and uncles who come to

  418. church, moms and dads who come to

  419. church, and they act one way when

  420. they're in the church, and then they get

  421. home and they act another way at home.

  422. They get home and they act like what

  423. they have just worshiped and acted like

  424. in church that you would never expect

  425. that if you see them outside of the

  426. church. They talk a different way. They

  427. act a different way. They do stuff that

  428. you wouldn't condone or church wouldn't

  429. condone. And guess who is watching

  430. mom at church. And guess who is still

  431. watching mom at home?

  432. Your kids, your grandkids.

  433. The next generation is watching for

  434. somebody who will be faithful and

  435. somebody who will be real and will say,

  436. "I'm willing to sleep less to get with

  437. God. I am willing to put some boundaries

  438. up so that God is protected in my home.

  439. This is not just a Sunday thing for our

  440. home. This is who we are. I don't do

  441. Christianity. I am a Christian. Jesus

  442. saved me. It's not just something I do.

  443. It's who I am. My identity is in Christ.

  444. You say, "Yeah, that's that's easy.

  445. You're the pastor. That's not a pastor

  446. thing. That's a Christian thing." All of

  447. us this morning, if you are saved, then

  448. your identity is in Christ. Your

  449. identity is not in your job. Your

  450. identity is not in your friends. Your

  451. identity is in Christ. He gave his life,

  452. shed his blood to buy you for a price.

  453. It cost you cost him his life and he

  454. gave his life for you. Your priority

  455. number one, your first thing ought to be

  456. pleasing your heavenly father,

  457. protecting God in your home. The work

  458. number one. Put down number two.

  459. Number two, the word.

  460. Okay. So, we're supposed to work at

  461. this. We're going to prioritize God in

  462. our home. We're we're we're going to put

  463. God first. We're going to take diligent

  464. heed. Our first priority to do to do

  465. what? To do his word. Look at what

  466. Joshua tells them. Take diligent heed to

  467. do the commandment and the law. What is

  468. it that we're supposed to give the

  469. priority to?

  470. The commandment and the law. Let me

  471. define those words for you. Commandment

  472. is an order.

  473. Law is instruction.

  474. Joshua said, 'I want you to take the

  475. orders of God and I want you to take the

  476. instructions of God and I want you to

  477. put them at the top priority in your

  478. home. How are you and I supposed to have

  479. God in our home? Here it is. We take the

  480. orders and we take the instructions of

  481. our God to us and we make his word our

  482. top priority in our home.

  483. Priority number one is the word of God.

  484. Now, this is not very popular,

  485. but let's go here.

  486. More important than your child being on

  487. a sports team

  488. is your child knowing the Bible.

  489. More important than your family

  490. understanding the culture is your family

  491. understanding the Bible. We work really

  492. hard at all kinds of things in this

  493. life. We work really hard at

  494. prioritizing things for our family in

  495. this life. Oh, we make sure that there's

  496. a nice television on the wall so we can

  497. watch Blueie. Oh, we make sure that

  498. there's uh internet at the home so that

  499. everything works like it should. and we

  500. make sure that there's food in the

  501. pantries and we make sure that all of

  502. the conveniences of life is is just

  503. right. And if our kids want to do that,

  504. then we make sure that they're able to

  505. do that. And we go out of our way to

  506. attend a a ball game or out of our we

  507. cancel plans and cancel vacations so

  508. that we can go to a birthday party for

  509. one of our children's friends. And we

  510. change everything around. And we work

  511. really hard to make sure everybody in

  512. our family feels okay and feels loved

  513. and feels convenient. And there's

  514. nothing wrong with any of those things.

  515. You hear me? There's nothing wrong with

  516. any of those things unless

  517. those things become more important than

  518. God's word. And at the moment that God's

  519. word becomes second place to the sports

  520. or to the the the entertainment or to

  521. the friends or to the events or to

  522. anything that's going on. When God's

  523. word becomes second place, we have sin

  524. in our home. Now

  525. Joshua said, "Hey, you're going to take

  526. it home. Go home. You're done. We're

  527. done with you. You can go home. But when

  528. you go home, you better take the

  529. commandments and you better take the

  530. law. You take his orders. You take his

  531. instructions. You ponder on them. You

  532. think about them. You memorize them. You

  533. teach them to your children. You do

  534. everything that you can to make God's

  535. word the priority in your home."

  536. And I look at our culture today,

  537. moms and dads who don't even live

  538. together. They're living with other men

  539. and women. And kids spend time at mom's

  540. house and then on the weekends they go

  541. to dad's house.

  542. They're watching a culture of people who

  543. who middle-aged people in their 30s and

  544. their 40s can't figure out if they're a

  545. man or a woman.

  546. And children are watching this and

  547. growing up in this culture.

  548. It's not a midlife crisis. It's sin.

  549. I'll tell you what you are. You are what

  550. you came out the womb as. You can't

  551. change it.

  552. Here's these kids watching this culture.

  553. This we we we idolize. Listen, I I love

  554. football and sports as much as the next

  555. person, but we got to be very careful

  556. about idolizing sports figures in our

  557. culture. Oh, we lift these people up and

  558. I want you to you you're gonna one day

  559. play football like him and and the guy

  560. sitting there

  561. to doesn't look anything like Christ is

  562. is wasting his body away is talking

  563. about alcohol and

  564. that using foul language

  565. and we're looking at our kids saying

  566. you're going to be like him one day.

  567. They're watching.

  568. What is the most important thing in your

  569. home? Let me rephrase the question. Let

  570. me ask you this very directly. How

  571. important is the Bible in your home?

  572. Would you consider the Bible to be the

  573. first priority in your home? Do you read

  574. it regularly? Do you make church a

  575. priority? Do do you prioritize the Bible

  576. in your home?

  577. What if I asked your kids that question?

  578. What would they say?

  579. What if I asked your grandkids about

  580. grandma and grandpa when you go over is

  581. the Bible important in their home? What

  582. would an honest little kid say about how

  583. important the Bible is in your home?

  584. We we listen. Culture is great.

  585. Entertainment is great. I love sports. I

  586. love all the stuff that we do. And I I'm

  587. not preaching against any of those

  588. things this morning. I hope you

  589. understand that. But I am trying to get

  590. us to recognize today that if we want to

  591. take the God we worship on Sundays and

  592. worship him in our home on Mondays, we

  593. have got to be diligent and prioritize

  594. some things. We might have to cut out

  595. some TV time for our kids. Trust me,

  596. they'll be fine. Make them go outside.

  597. We might have to cut out some birthday

  598. parties so that we can go to church on

  599. Sunday morning. We we might have to make

  600. some changes so that we can communicate

  601. to the next generation that God's word

  602. is most important. Listen, you're going

  603. to pass away one of these days. Grandma

  604. and Grandpa, you're not going to be here

  605. forever. Mom, Dad, you're not going to

  606. be here forever. The grass withers, the

  607. flower fades, but the word of our God

  608. shall stand forever. When you're gone,

  609. there will be one thing that your kids

  610. and my kids can hang on to, and it will

  611. be the word of God. It has never failed.

  612. It has never quit. It has never been

  613. wrong. It has never been incorrect. It

  614. has always been here. It's always been

  615. right. It's always been true. And when

  616. there's nothing else to hold on to in

  617. our culture, we can hold on to this

  618. right here. How important is it in your

  619. life? Do you read it? Do you study it?

  620. Do you pray over it?

  621. Do you spend time in it? You're here at

  622. church this morning. Congratulations.

  623. Good for you. You've done what God's

  624. asked you to do. That's what Joshua says

  625. to the two tribes. Hey, you've obeyed

  626. the commands up to this point. And I

  627. tell you today, good job, church. You're

  628. here. You've obeyed God's commands.

  629. You've not forsaken the assembling of

  630. yourselves together as Hebrews warns

  631. against. And you've come to church and

  632. you've made an effort to be here.

  633. Congratulations. Great job. But

  634. what's it going to mean when you get

  635. home?

  636. How important is it going to be tomorrow

  637. morning when you wake up? How important

  638. is it going to be next Sunday when you

  639. wake up? How important is the word? So,

  640. we see the work. It's going to take some

  641. work. We see the word.

  642. Notice number three. Write down number

  643. three, the way. And this is the the

  644. explanation. Joshua's going to tell them

  645. exactly how

  646. how to have God's word or or how to have

  647. God in your home. He's going to give

  648. them a list of things here in verse

  649. number five. How what does God command

  650. us to do? Okay, Pastor John, I I I'm

  651. with you. I understand it's important.

  652. Our culture is wicked. Uh uh the devil

  653. is after our children and our

  654. grandchildren, our communities, and our

  655. towns and our schools. And I I get it.

  656. It's bad out there. But how how really

  657. how practically? How can I get God in my

  658. home?

  659. What's the what's the practical steps?

  660. Let me show you. Uh I think there's five

  661. of them here. Notice them. You can

  662. underline them if you'd like to in your

  663. Bible. The first one, love God. Look at

  664. what he said to He said, "I want you to

  665. to go home and I want you to love the

  666. Lord your God.

  667. You will chase whatever you love.

  668. You will chase whatever you love most."

  669. When me and Esther were dating,

  670. I did some chasing,

  671. right?

  672. I hope I still chase. She probably would

  673. disagree. Maybe I got to do better. I

  674. start chasing her a little more again.

  675. You chase what you love. You chase what

  676. you are passionate about.

  677. Guess what happens in a month? I'm

  678. counting down the days. You know what

  679. happens in a month?

  680. Bow season.

  681. I'm gonna go climb up in a deer stand

  682. and do nothing for hours and hours and

  683. hours. It's my time of the year to

  684. recharge. It's wonderful.

  685. You know what I say? Now, really, I'm

  686. sitting in a tree, but what I will tell

  687. people is I am chasing deer, right?

  688. Well, there's not much chasing going on.

  689. I'm just kind of waiting on them to come

  690. to me.

  691. But we put money into it. We plan for

  692. it. We put trail cameras out. We look at

  693. the pictures. We try and figure out when

  694. they're going to be there. We we buy

  695. stuff to make us smell like an animal.

  696. And we put it on. And then we go climb

  697. up in a tree and we waste hours and

  698. hours and hours of our time all so that

  699. we can brag about the deer that we shot.

  700. Why? We chase what we love. And there's

  701. nothing wrong with it. I'm going to do

  702. it.

  703. But we chase what we love. Joshua looks

  704. at the two and a half tribes and he

  705. says, "It's time to go home. But when

  706. you go home, you better love God.

  707. You better pursue God as hard as you

  708. would do anything else in this life. You

  709. better chase after God as hard as you

  710. would anything else. No hobby is more

  711. important than your God. No job is more

  712. important than your God. No, no deadline

  713. is more important than your God. You

  714. chase what you love. In our culture, we

  715. have made money most important. Just

  716. honestly. And we chase the dollar. Why?

  717. Because we love money. The love of money

  718. is the root of all evil. And maybe that

  719. explains what's happened in our culture

  720. a little bit. We've got a culture that

  721. has lifted up money as the number one

  722. priority and it's got to be the next

  723. job, the next position, the next raise,

  724. the the more hours I'm going to chase

  725. the dollar.

  726. Why? Because I love money. What if

  727. Christian people would decide that more

  728. important than money is God? And I love

  729. God more than I love money. So instead

  730. of chasing after the dollar, I'm just

  731. going to start chasing after God with

  732. the same passion that I pursued the

  733. dollar. What would happen in our

  734. churches? What would happen in your

  735. home?

  736. It's not all about the money. But I

  737. promise you, you will chase what you

  738. love. Number two, what is the way? How

  739. do I get God in my home? Well, you got

  740. to love him.

  741. What's next? Well, Joshua says, "Love

  742. the Lord your God and walk in all his

  743. ways." Not only do you need to love God,

  744. but you need to walk with God.

  745. Walk in his ways. Walk with him.

  746. Do you spend time with God?

  747. I mean, like

  748. really spend time with God.

  749. When is the last time that

  750. you lost track of time

  751. because you were just so consumed at the

  752. person of Jesus Christ?

  753. and you're in your Bible or maybe even

  754. you're on your knees and you're praying.

  755. It was a couple of weeks ago, and I I I

  756. probably shouldn't say this, but maybe

  757. it'll help somebody. I don't mean this

  758. to be boastful at all. It was a couple

  759. weeks ago on a Saturday night, I was

  760. really struggling with what to preach.

  761. It was late Saturday night, and I like

  762. to wake up early on Sunday mornings, so

  763. that means I like to go to bed early on

  764. Saturday nights. But it was late. My

  765. sermon was not I I wasn't happy with it.

  766. I did not feel like it was going the

  767. right direction. And I was pouring over

  768. a passage and I it was late Saturday

  769. night and I I I didn't [clears throat]

  770. know what what I was going to do. And I

  771. knelt down in my office, God, my knees

  772. next to that chair in the middle of the

  773. night and I just started praying and I

  774. started weeping

  775. over that chair asking God to please

  776. help us. And I stood up after what felt

  777. like a few moments and it was one

  778. o'clock in the morning. I had no idea

  779. how much time had passed.

  780. consumed

  781. with the presence of our God.

  782. We ought to live there. That ought not

  783. to be an odd thing for a child of God.

  784. You know, David Livingston, the great

  785. missionary to Africa, they found David

  786. Livingston. He he lived his life. And at

  787. the end of his life, they found David

  788. Livingston. One of his one of his

  789. students, one of his assistants came

  790. into the the little shack where David

  791. Livingston was living. And Livingston

  792. was an old man at that point. And he

  793. went in. He didn't see him anywhere. He

  794. was looking around where where is David

  795. Livingston at? And he's looking all

  796. around and he couldn't find him. And

  797. finally, he went around the corner of

  798. the bed and he saw David Livingston

  799. there on his knees with his hands

  800. clasped just praying on his bed. And and

  801. the assistant thought, well, he's he's

  802. talking with the Lord. I I probably

  803. should just let him be. But then as he

  804. noticed, he realized he was not

  805. breathing. And David Livingston had died

  806. right there kneeling at his bed,

  807. praying, talking to the Lord.

  808. What a way to go.

  809. What a way to go. You're talking with

  810. him one second and then you're kneeling

  811. before him in his presence the next

  812. second.

  813. His ways. Do you walk with God? You

  814. spend time with him. Adam and Eve in the

  815. garden, you remember Adam and Eve, every

  816. day they had a time where they walked

  817. with God. Every day they had a time when

  818. they walked with God. God would come in

  819. the cool of the day and he would walk

  820. alongside Adam and Eve in the Garden of

  821. Eden and he would communicate with them.

  822. Do you have a time every day where you

  823. walk with God and let him communicate

  824. with you? And then what was it that

  825. broke that fellowship? It was sin. When

  826. Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, God

  827. showed up at the same time in the same

  828. place. God was there waiting. But guess

  829. who wasn't there this day? Adam and Eve.

  830. They were hiding because for the first

  831. time in their life, they felt guilt and

  832. shame over what they had done.

  833. God was in the same place, ready to

  834. talk, ready to communicate, ready to

  835. make it right. I got to move along. Let

  836. me give you these last ones. We got to

  837. love God. How do you get God in your

  838. home? What is the way to do it? Five

  839. steps. Love God, walk with God. Number

  840. three, obey God. Look at what he said.

  841. Walk in his ways and keep his

  842. commandments. Keep his commandments.

  843. Just do what God's told you to do. Just

  844. do what he's told you to do. Well, what

  845. is it that God's told me to do? Well, if

  846. you get into his word and you prioritize

  847. the Bible, you'll figure out what God

  848. has told you to do. And once you figure

  849. it out, just do it. Once the Holy Spirit

  850. leads you to do something, just do it.

  851. Just obey God. Obey what God has told

  852. you to do. Don't run from conviction.

  853. Uh I as a pastor, I've seen this

  854. multiple times in in just a few years

  855. where someone will come to church for a

  856. period of time and uh they'll they'll

  857. they'll enjoy it. I mean, they'll give

  858. me all kinds of compliments and great

  859. things and then I will preach a message

  860. that hits a little too close to home, a

  861. little too close to where they are and

  862. I'll tell them what the Bible says about

  863. a sin in their life and they become very

  864. unhappy and they run.

  865. That's not my fault. That's not God's

  866. fault. We're just telling the truth. If

  867. people run from it, that's going to be

  868. between them and the Lord. But don't be

  869. that person. If the word of God hits

  870. close to your sin, if the word of We

  871. used to say it like this, if the word of

  872. God steps on your toes a little bit,

  873. embrace that conviction. That means

  874. you're saved. That means the Holy Spirit

  875. of God is inside of you saying, "Hey,

  876. this is something I would like to see

  877. fixed." So, you embrace that. Fix what

  878. he points out. Confess your sin. Forsake

  879. your sin. and then move on in a right

  880. fellowship with Jesus Christ. Don't run

  881. from conviction. Just obey what God's

  882. telling you to do. Let me give you

  883. another one. We're almost done. Number

  884. four, what's the practical way? Okay,

  885. cling to God. Look what he says. He

  886. said, "Keep his commandments and to

  887. cleave unto him."

  888. That word cleave means to cling or hold

  889. on to something. Yesterday we had a

  890. little bit of free time before the uh

  891. the man church yesterday afternoon and

  892. it there a storm came through. It was

  893. raining and Callie loves the rain. So me

  894. and Cali since she was just little,

  895. we've always went outside and sat on the

  896. porch and watched the rain and the

  897. thunderstorms and she loves it. And

  898. yesterday it started raining and she

  899. went running out the door and I stayed

  900. on the couch and then just a moment she

  901. comes to the screen door and puts her

  902. little face up to the door and says,

  903. "Daddy, it's raining. Get out here."

  904. Said, "Okay, I'm coming. I'm coming."

  905. And so we go out and we we the whole

  906. family was just sitting on the front

  907. porch watching it rain and uh they

  908. started our porch has opened the the

  909. beams are open so you can reach up there

  910. and grab a hold of them and they wanted

  911. to grab a hold of those and do pull-ups

  912. and so I picked them up and Calie is the

  913. brave one so she went first and she

  914. grabs a hold of those 2x4s up there and

  915. and you know I lift her up and oh look

  916. you're doing it look you're doing

  917. pull-ups good job and we're and and then

  918. I just let go of her and she realized

  919. I'm hanging on, right? I'm I'm doing it

  920. all by myself, right? I'm hanging here.

  921. Nobody's holding me. And she thought it

  922. was the greatest thing ever. She just

  923. wanted to do it over and over again. So

  924. I said, "Tucker, your turn." And he

  925. saidm,

  926. he said, "I ain't doing that." So we

  927. worked with him and we coaxed him and we

  928. finally we got Tucker to get up there

  929. and I let go of him for a second. It was

  930. just fear on his face at first and then

  931. he realized, "Oh, I can do this." And he

  932. he just held on.

  933. He just held on.

  934. And as I was thinking about this word

  935. cleave, cling to, I thought about those

  936. kids

  937. just hanging on.

  938. Guess what? It's going to be tough in

  939. your home at times.

  940. No family is perfect. No marriage is

  941. perfect. You have two imperfect people,

  942. two sinners who decided to try and do

  943. this thing together. Can you I mean, you

  944. can just imagine the mess, right? two

  945. sinners who actually try to live under

  946. the same roof for 50 years. It's chaos.

  947. It's doomed from the beginning

  948. unless

  949. you hold on to somebody who's bigger

  950. than you.

  951. Unless you just hold on to God.

  952. And there may be ups and there may be

  953. downs. And there will be circumstances

  954. and situations that are tough. And

  955. there's going to be mistakes. And

  956. there's going to be sin.

  957. And there's going to have to be a need

  958. for forgiveness. And and it's going to

  959. be rocky at times. It's going to be

  960. smooth at times. Through it all,

  961. hold on to him.

  962. If you never let go of God, he'll never

  963. let go of you. In fact, even if you let

  964. go of God, he'll still hold on to you

  965. and he'll do his best to draw you back.

  966. Listen, you can do it this morning. You

  967. can have a successful marriage.

  968. You can have

  969. a godly home.

  970. The Bible says that we can do it with

  971. Christ. So, hold on to him. Cling to

  972. him. Don't worry about your past. Those

  973. past sins are gone. Don't worry about

  974. those. Just hold on to God. All right,

  975. let me give you the last one. We're

  976. done. You can come. Number five, how do

  977. we do it? What's the way? Number five,

  978. serve God. Look at what he says. And to

  979. serve him with all your heart, with all

  980. your soul. At the end of it, where's he?

  981. Where's he end? What's the blessing? The

  982. final blessing he gives them. He says,

  983. "Hey, go home. Two and a half tribes. Go

  984. home. Take God with you. Love him. Obey

  985. him. Walk with him. Hold on to him.

  986. Don't let him go. Oh, and serve him

  987. with all your heart, with all your soul.

  988. Give him everything that you've got.

  989. Serve him all of your days. Don't get

  990. lazy. Don't get laxed. Don't give up.

  991. Don't quit. You just keep on serving

  992. him. Yeah, there's a river between us.

  993. Yeah, the Jordan's on we're on this side

  994. of Jordan and you're on that side of

  995. Jordan and we've had a great victory

  996. over here and God's done great things

  997. over here and now it's time for you to

  998. go home. But when you go home, you keep

  999. on serving him. You keep on loving him.

1000. You keep on holding on to him. You keep

1001. on abiding with him. You keep on walking

1002. with him. And church, this morning,

  1003. we've had a great day in God's house.

  1004. [music]

1005. And we've worshiped him and we've lifted

1006. our hands and we've testified of his

1007. goodness and we've given him the praise

1008. and we've given him the glory. And now

1009. it's time to go home.

1010. How do you take the God that you have

1011. worshiped this morning in this place

1012. home with you and you keep worshiping

1013. him in that place? Well, you better fall

  1014. in love with him.

  1015. You better obey him.

1016. You better cling to him.

1017. Do what he's asked you to do.

1018. Keep on serving Jesus all the days of

1019. your life. Don't get don't get tired.

1020. Paul said, "Be not weary in welloing,

1021. for in due season you will reap if you

1022. faint not." Don't give up. Just because

1023. you haven't seen the fruit yet, just

1024. because you haven't seen the evidence

1025. yet, just because your kids are are

1026. devils right now, doesn't mean they will

  1027. be forever.

1028. You just keep on serving God. You just

1029. keep on loving God. You just keep on

1030. praying for your marriage and for your

1031. spouse and for your children and for

1032. your grandchildren and for your family

1033. and for your community and for revival

1034. and for your nation. And you just keep

1035. on seeking God above everything and

1036. anything else. And when you hold on to

1037. him with everything you've got, you can

1038. take the God that we have worshiped in

1039. this place. You can take him home with

1040. you today and you can worship him in

  1041. that place.

1042. It's going to take some work.

  1043. It's going to take a decision

  1044. that says, "God,

1045. in my home, I want to make you the

  1046. priority."

1047. I encourage couples to make this [music]

1048. decision on purpose and and maybe write

1049. it on a paper, even put it on a plaque,

  1050. the date

1051. when you came before God and you said,

1052. "God, as a family in our home, we will

1053. do our very best to prioritize you

1054. first." If you've not done that, you you

1055. might be 80 years old in here and you

1056. say, "We've never done that as a

1057. family." Why don't you today, you just

  1058. say, "Today

1059. in my home, God will be the priority."

1060. Today, starting today, on this random

1061. Sunday in September, Labor Day weekend

  1062. 2026,

  1063. I make a decision

1064. that God will be the priority in my

  1065. home.

1066. And everything we do will go through the

1067. filter of does God approve of this? Is

  1068. this loving God?

1069. You're going to have more fun than

1070. you've ever had if you do that. And

1071. you're going to love God more than

1072. you've ever loved God. and you're going

1073. to receive blessings. Can I Can I just

  1074. testify? [music] I'm finished.

  1075. Can I testify?

1076. That little boy stood right here

  1077. and he started singing,

  1078. "I'm

  1079. not going to hell.

  1080. I I am so unworthy

1081. of the family that God has given me.

  1082. the wife.

1083. And now I'm watching these kids.

1084. And it's not just my kids. We've got a

1085. church full. They're all downstairs

1086. right now. We got all kind of kids in

1087. our church. And they love this place.

1088. And I get to pastor this place.

1089. It's the greatest blessing of my life

  1090. to watch my family

1091. serve my God with me in this place.

1092. But then we go home

1093. and Callie goes and gets her Bible off

1094. of the shelf and says, "Daddy,

  1095. [snorts]

1096. can you read me a verse?

1097. Oh, I pray she never loses that desire

1098. to hear what God has said to her.

  1099. But I know this,

  1100. there's a devil that's already got a

  1101. target on her.

  1102. There's a devil who's already watching

  1103. this little boy scene.

1104. And his number one priority

1105. is to get this little boy distracted

  1106. with something else

1107. so that Tucker doesn't end up in church.

1108. Now, Tucker's saved. I believe with all

1109. my heart he's going to get baptized next

1110. Sunday. But he's got a target on his

  1111. back.

1112. The devil's going to do everything he

1113. can to get that boy out in the world and

1114. mixed up in the things of the world and

1115. that little girl mixed up in the things

1116. of the world and distracted from the

1117. things of God and living on their own

1118. and living away from God and letting go,

1119. not clinging to God, there's a target on

1120. their back. And not my kids, but your

1121. kids and your grandkids have a target on

  1122. their back.

1123. And if [music] we don't soon learn

1124. how to take this Bible

1125. and make it everything in our home,

1126. then the devil is going to

  1127. destroy our children.

  1128. He'll destroy your marriage. He'll

1129. destroy your kids. He'll destroy your

1130. grandkids. The greatest blessings of

1131. your life, the devil will steal them.

1132. He'll rip them away from you and feed

1133. them to the wolves. [snorts] That's his

1134. goal. He loves no one.

1135. He hates you. He hates your marriage. He

1136. hates that you're here this morning. He

1137. hates your kids. He hates your family.

1138. And he does everything he can. The Bible

1139. calls him a roaring lion. He's doing

1140. everything he can to destroy them.

1141. God's given us the answer

1142. and we don't even pick it up.

1143. It's a miracle if we even make it to

1144. church on a Sunday morning.

  1145. I think it's time

1146. that we have some Christian parents,

  1147. some Christian grandparents

  1148. who say, "God,

1149. in my home, you will be number one. I

1150. may not be able to save the the

1151. everybody. I may not be able to change

1152. everybody, but you have given me

1153. influence over my family." And when they

1154. come in my home, they're going to know

1155. that we love God more than anything

  1156. else.

1157. And they're going to know that we obey

1158. God. And they're going to know that the

1159. word of God means everything to us. And

1160. they're going to know that some things

1161. don't happen around here. Not because

1162. we're mean, because we love Jesus.

1163. Would you stand with me this morning?

  1164. I'm finished.

1165. She's going to play. We're just going to

1166. open this up as a prayer room [music]

  1167. this morning. You come

1168. do business with God today. Maybe you

1169. you say, "I need to make a commitment to

1170. God for my family today.

1171. You want to pray with somebody." Would

1172. you come? Just come on. We won't belabor

  1173. it. We won't wait.

  1174. I don't know about you. I don't want the

1175. devil to have my kids.

  1176. I I don't want him to have.

  1177. He's already lost. What a shame that a

1178. loser like the devil would win my

  1179. family.

1180. Not in my house. Not on my watch. We're

1181. going to do everything we can

1182. to make God our priority.

1183. Let's get God in our homes. Church, you

  1184. come pray.
