Colossians 3:1-4 | Edgar Sathuluri

Good morning church.

I love your costumes.

Some of you look very um exciting or thrilling and I've never s been at at a church service uh where people had costumes and so I'm gonna cherish this uh service in more than one way.

Um thank you, Colton uh, for this beautiful opportunity, and uh I just met your mother.

Oh my goodness.

You did it whenever told me uh that Tina is your mom, and uh wow, she came to India.

So probably she you probab you you can uh uh come too.

And uh um Colton's wife, where is she gone?

Yeah.

Okay, okay.

Uh her father and mother have been to India, so uh the next generation also hopefully uh can come to India.

But I want you to turn with me in your Bibles if you have.

I think we will have also on the screen.

Would you kindly stand up uh to read the Word of God?

Because uh yes, we worship the Lord by standing, and everything we do until now, uh everything we did, prayer or giving or give uh worshiping is from us to God, but the word of God is from God to us, and this is the only inspired word of God, and so I want you to read uh together these words of the apostle Paul written to the church at Colossae.

Let's start.

Therefore, if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things about, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

Father, we thank you for the word of God that the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Colossae, and I pray those words that were written 2,000 years ago will come alive to us and minister to us so that we will have a meaning and purpose in our life every day, and know that we are in Christ.

For Jesus' sake, Amen.

I have some special guests that I mentioned uh that I want to uh uh talk about this morning, and uh there is one special person, Karen Hopkins.

Would you please uh take take a stand for a moment?

Yes.

She she drove oh, it's all right.

Yeah, thank you.

She drove all the way from Birmingham this morning to be in the service.

The reason she's very special, and the reason why she did that is because I had a stroke 2000 September.

It was a bad one.

I came to United States because my heart uh bypass was botched in India, and so there was the only way to go to the United States.

And uh thankfully, while they were doing uh uh angioplastian stenting, my blood pressure shot at 256 or 152.

Whoa.

Resulting in a hemorrhage and hematoma and a craniotomy, also.

But so I lost my speech and my right side was paralyzed, and uh Karen was uh working at the Lakeshore Health South Hospital or rehab center, where I stayed three months after craniotomy in St.

Vincent.

So she had uh a job of uh helping me to speak again, and I thank God and uh we kept in touch.

Twenty-four years ago, she helped me to speak again.

You know, when I lost my speech, I said to the Lord, Lord, you called me to preach.

How can I preach without speech?

I was I think uh the Lord said, Huh, maybe you're right.

Let me give it back to you.

But I had to work hard, and so she really uh three months, I think, uh morning one hour and afternoon one hour.

Anyway, uh thank you for uh uh Karen for for you driving up and uh coming to, and probably she's going to audit my speech also.

And uh Eric Brand, thank you for coming.

And he visited India and uh told he told me that he's just here this morning uh to hear me preach.

And my good old friend, partner in the ministry, Sam Dixon, he's responsible to organize everything, opportunity for me while in the United States, and while I'm here, he's my boss.

Because uh when he comes to India, I'm his boss.

But uh, church, I want to speak on something very important, I believe, the apostle Paul felt while he was writing to the church at Colossae.

Now, the church at Colossae was not planted by the Apostle Paul, it was planted by a man called Ipophras and also Philemon.

And Colossae is about a hundred miles away from Ephesus, where the Apostle Paul was preaching, and uh in the school, like yours meeting in the school, a school of Tyrannus.

And it's a good way to run a church, I think.

And uh so night after night he was preaching the gospel, and people were converted, and uh things were changing, and lives were being transformed.

The word spread all over that part of Asia, and so it went, the news spread to Lycas Valley, where Colossae was situated, and Paul's gospel brought this man Ephrodus.

I'm sorry I got to keep sipping water because uh I'm taking lots of pills from my back, and uh I have a bad back.

I'm gonna see my neurosurgeon uh on Tuesday morning.

So if I'm drinking, don't feel bad, or don't want to uh you don't want to uh do like me and go back, so let's not distract.

I hope I'm not distracting.

I think I'm getting dry because of the um pills, but isn't like the Christian life, as we live in this world, as the rubber meets the road, the tire is worn out or getting wearing very so, in the same way, Christian life needs some kind of a filling of the Holy Spirit, I believe.

So every time I drink, think I'm drinking the filling of the Holy Spirit, by the way.

So, Colossae.

A church was beautifully started, and Philemon was a rich man, he had slaves and all kinds of business, I think, and he had a home large enough to house the church.

But soon problems surfaced, all kinds of doctrines were being preached or taught.

Many were talking, for example, some Jews were asking people to get back to legalism.

Jesus is not enough, we need Moses also, or circumcision, just not faith, is not enough.

So we need circumcision with the Jews practiced.

And so Paul had to address all those issues.

And secondly, there were some who said, Oh, Jesus Christ is not God at all, and they were questioning his deity.

And I'm so glad that you, the song you sung today, was reflection of the deity of Christ, the Son of God who died for us on the cross at Calvary, who rose again.

And this passage talks about this death, resurrection, and also ascension in heaven, into heaven, and accession with the Father.

But some people were saying that Jesus was not God, because the Gnostics at that time believed Christ is only human because God cannot become a man.

Matter is evil.

If matter is what God constitutes, and then God Himself is evil, so Jesus Christ is not God, but the Bible teaches God, the Son of God, is co-equal with the Father, and also he became a man or took on the human flesh, fully God and fully man.

And I believe that's a kind of gospel that is now being taken away from our churches.

There's more many apostate churches in India and also in America too.

So Paul is addressing those issues here in the book of Colossians.

And thirdly, some were practicing uh come from practicing pagan religions and they believed in mysticism, like in India, for example, all the people that come to Christ are from Hinduism, idolatry, superstition, and practicing uh mysticism.

Even some Christians who have become believers in Christ turned away from idols and come to the living God, yet they practice mysticism.

Or they think that spending more time in prayer is going to make you something far superior, Christian.

So this is the problem that I think has.

So in mysticism, they will probably become more like Christ or more pure than the others.

And the third problem was that ah, they believed in asceticism.

Ah, you need to do away with this kind of practice or that kind of practice.

In the second chapter, in the end, the apostle Paul talks about in verse 8 onwards to the end, he addresses all those four problems.

These uh four harmful teachings were so prevalent in the church, and so the apostle Paul.

Uh the reason why he wrote it, in fact, the place from which he wrote is an exciting aspect I want you to think about.

He was in Rome, arrested, and he was waiting for trial under Caesar.

It was a kind of a house uh imprisonment.

Thankfully, he could pay for his own house, and he had little freedom, yeah, although he was chained 24-7 to Praetorian God, but he had freedom to have people visit him.

So Timothy was there at the time, and a long list is given to us in the fourth chapter.

But Ephiprus, when he found these problems that he could not address and give a biblical explanation or answer in telling people the deed of Christ and establishing the truth that sets people free, he now hands over the ministry of the church to another young man, possibly Philemon's son.

And he went in search of Paul because the apostle Paul is the one who can give all the answers.

And so he didn't know where the address was this morning.

My friend Sam, very good with Memphis roads, and it's like uh the back of his hand, he knows every road, I think.

But today he struggled.

He thought it was in some other place, and we drove up there and he took, I'm sorry, this is another place, again a U-turn, another U-turn, and we stopped.

We stopped, and then he looked at the address and keyed the address into the GPS, and there we go.

Now, our friend Epofrost didn't have any address.

Colton Seeger sent the address, and so we drove up.

One of the things the moment Sam entered the church building, he did, was to call his wife.

Honey, it's not where I thought.

And so she was able to come straight to the location, thankfully.

But Epiphras, probably because of the burden of the church, this church is going away from the truth of the word of God, the revealed word of God, and Jesus Christ Himself is not now denied of his deity.

And so he somehow, I don't know how long it took for him to find finds Paul in the prison cell and pleased with him to write a letter.

And this is one of the grand epistles the apostle Paul penned from uh uh uh from the prison.

And look at the words that he talks about the deity of concerning the deity of Christ, chapter 1, and verses 13 onwards.

For he, that is the father, rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.

Did anyone experience this in their personal life?

If not, today is the day of salvation.

The Bible says, now is the appointed time.

What Father does is rescue us.

Now, Colton's wife, uh I'm sorry, uh Rainey, Rainey, yes, she mentioned or talked about a rescue mission that men ought to join and uh help these homeless people.

The words that are mentioned is rescue, but this rescue is totally different, rescuing us from the domain of darkness, where Satan is king and transferred as God the Father Himself did, us unto into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom that is in Christ, we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Hallelujah for that.

Do you all say hallelujah?

Oh, say again, hallelujah.

Let me say one word in uh my language.

I don't think I'm connecting with people.

Raynie, you called people to connect, really?

Uh-huh.

I want to connect with you.

Okay?

I want to say one word in my language, and I want you to repeat.

So hear clearly.

One the Nalu.

Oh no.

You didn't have breakfast or uh the service is not good, okay?

Say it again with enthusiasm, please.

One the Nalu.

Great! You know what you just there said?

Uh-uh.

You just signed up to go to India.

Oh no, I'm kidding.

That's a word of greeting, partly and a word of thank you.

And I greet the church in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, one the Nalu.

And when I finish, again, Wandanalu that says thank you for allowing me the opportunity.

But the Apostle Paul continues, we have redemption.

Christ purchased us with his blood from the slave market of sin.

Have you experienced that redemption?

Did Christ buy you out of slavery of sin?

All right.

Then he also talks about the forgiveness of sins, and then he talks about who this Christ is, his beloved son.

And this son, in verse 15, he is the image of the invisible God.

God is invisible, no man has seen God at any time.

John writes in his gospel, chat, the prologue of the Gospel John, and he says, Only the Son who dwells in the bosom of the Father, he revealed or exiged him to us.

We don't know God, God is Spirit.

Yet, if you want to see God, you got to come to Christ.

Because Jesus is the image of the invisible God, and he talks about all the aspects of his deity in this chapter.

And the key verse for the Colossians, the entire book, I believe, is verse 9 in the second chapter.

Could you say this after me?

Probably we may not be able to get in the because I didn't mention.

Would you all kindly repeat these words after me?

This I'm reading the scripture.

Chapter 2, verse 9.

Here it goes.

For in him all the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form.

And in him you have been made complete, and he is the head over all rule and authority.

In him, the Bible says, all the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form.

Now you wore a costume, beautiful, like an angel, and uh what are you this morning?

Uh oh yeah.

Sir?

Peanut butter and jelly.

Peanut butter and jelly?

Oh, I can't say that again, sorry.

Peanut butter and jelly, okay.

Wow, I like peanut butter and jelly.

Yeah.

Are you a sandwich?

Oh.

So you you say cold and I can't uh taste them.

These motives, these uh dresses or whatever you call them, it's like a representation of what you would like to be, in one sense.

Am I right?

Now God himself, but yo, you should certainly not peanut butter and jelly.

But Jesus Christ is God.

He took human flesh, and when he came upon the earth, he was fully God and fully man.

And John says, When the word that is God became flesh and dwelt among us, we can see his glory as the glory of the only begotten of the Father.

The word begotten is unique, Son of God, full of grace and truth.

So people saw God in flesh.

What a beautiful way God expressed Himself.

And so Paul talks about it, the deity of Christ.

And now I want to just mention as to why the Apostle Paul had to write this beautiful letter because in the second chapter, as I said, the Apostle Paul was right answering those questions that were raised by the Gnostics concerning his deity, and also the Judaisers concerning practicing the circumcision or other Mosaic law.

And thirdly, mysticism.

People need not spend endless hours doing something that is not biblical, but think they think religious enough to be close to God.

And fourthly, they left the world in order to not sin anymore.

I can go to Mount Everest, and many of Indian saints, so-called saints in the Hindu religion, leave everything, put on simple clothes, and spend endless hours all by themselves like hermits.

And they think they are not committing sin.

But do you know you can live on the Mount of Everest or in the space tomorrow if Elon Musk is able to succeed?

And yet you will be the most sinful man, even away from all the human race.

Why?

Sin is not committed only when you engage in an activity, it is in the heart.

Jesus said, when you look at a woman with lust in your eyes, you already committed adultery.

Wow.

That's why pornography is so popular everywhere.

And if you hate your brother, Jesus said, You already committed murder.

Then hatred is in the heart.

You probably didn't express anything in words, also, yet sin is within.

Now, the beautiful part of the Christianity, the gospel is from such lies, God rescues us from the domain of darkness into the marvelous light of his son and gives us an opportunity to be with Christ.

The title, if I may, give to this passage, third chapter.

Now we can't let's come to third chapter, verse one and four through four.

He's union with Christ.

That is a beautiful concept.

We are one with sin earlier, one with Satan, or rather having union with sin, but now union with the Son of God.

What a glorious future awaits us, because Jesus is coming back, is going to take us away to be with him.

Verse 4 says, when Christ, who is our life, currently or presently, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

Wow, what a great powerful statement that is.

And so, what about our life until then?

The present life while you are in this world.

Well, let's see Paul, what Paul says.

Number one, the believers union in the resurrection life of Christ.

You see, he talked earlier in the second chapter of our union with Christ in his death and resurrection.

Please turn to second chapter if you may.

You may have a digital Bible, I don't know, on your phone.

Paul talks about it in 11th verse onward, 11th verse onwards, or 12th.

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands.

Now he was referring to the baptism.

The Christian baptism is like a circumcision in the Old Testament.

That which is unnecessary of the world is cut off.

But here it is happening without hands.

That is God Himself is doing.

In the removal, he continues, of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.

And then he explains what it means.

Verse 12 Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with him through faith in the working of God who raised him from the dead.

And then he says, You were dead in transgressions.

You were all, all of us, whether you're white or brown, like me, or black, all human race is dead in sins.

We are born with sin nature.

Because of Adam, courtesy.

And every father is responsible for it.

And that's why I didn't pick up father.

I'm singles, sorry.

A theologian called Dr.

Dwight Pentecost, who was a professor emiratus at Dallas Theological Seminary.

I met him and I translated one of his books and uh uh translated his uh tapes also for our uh village pastors and evangelists, say something unique or interesting.

He went to as a pastor to see uh a family that had a newborn in the hospital, and so the father met the pastor and said these words.

I just saw a little sinner, the father said, and I don't I don't think the mother liked those words, but he was speaking biblical theology, a little sinner, and as he grows up, he practices only sin.

And the apostle says, Having been uh when you are dead in your transgressions and the circumcis uncircumcision of your flesh, he made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our transgression, having cancelled our certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us.

And he's taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

So our sins are gone the moment we believe in Jesus Christ.

He took care of that.

The word therefore in third chapter is there because of those second chapter, what he mentioned or talked about.

Therefore, he says, if you have been raised up with Christ, the word if can also be uh uh uh uh meant as a word sins.

Let's use the word sins.

Since you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things about.

My my.

I think we had a beautiful connection, connect in the worship service.

I don't know how many times I didn't count.

Colton mentioned the word that we should be transformed into the image of Christ.

That's exactly what the apostle Paul is talking about.

Since you've been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

You see, Paul talked about baptism.

What does it mean?

In Romans 6 and verse 5, Paul says these words, for if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall also certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

We want some more, Uncle.

Oh my, the hunger and thirst in some areas that I see is very encouraging.

You see, however, since we, the body of Christ, still lives in the world with all its influences and powers, and since Christ is our head after his ascension, he is seated at the right hand of God the Father, we need, please listen to carefully, we need a new lifestyle than that we had before conversion, which is why the apostle gives two specific exhortations.

I need to quickly talk about them.

One, the exhortation to a believer, number one is the seeking the things about.

The apostle is very clear, he uses a kind of a present continuous tense, keep seeking the things about.

This word seek in Greek apparently implies here not as an investigation, but an effort to obtain.

There is something in heaven with Christ, my head.

For example, for us to understand a little bit of this language, when a husband and wife are married, when a man and a woman are married, the preacher or the one solmonizing, he uses a text like in uh Genesis chapter 2 and 24.

Genesis 2 · chapter mention

Therefore, a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they shall become what if you're married, can you can say that?

One flesh.

The word one is a cad, compound unity, and so there are two people must act as one flesh.

Where the problem is in marriages, they are trying to work out who is the head and who is the body constantly, and the wife often thinks she's the head, but here it is very clear Christ is the head, our head is seated at the right hand of God the Father, and the body is here in this world.

So we need to work out how we are to live.

The Apostle Paul says we should constantly seek in order to obtain the things that are above.

Heaven and earth, my friends, are contrary to one the other.

And the prevalence of our affection to one will proportionately weaken our affection to the other.

Aaron Einstein, one of the preachers I try to read, said these words, commenting on keep seeking the things above.

Einstein said, This is in contrast to the things spoken of in Philippians 3 9.

He's where Paul writes, who mind the people of the world, the earthly things.

He says, Einstein says, the time for this is past if you're a Christian.

For those who are now one with Christ risen, this will not make us impractical and visionary, but we shall live all the more consistently, thus fulfilling our very responsibilities in the home, in business, in the state, and of course in the church, as our minds are fixed on heavenly things.

The pilgrim is not to despise the comforts which he may meet by the way, but he's not to tarry among them or leave them with regret.

And secondly, the apostle said exhortation is setting the mind on things about, seeking the things about, setting your mind on the things about.

Heavenly, not earthly.

Word set is interesting.

It talks about a bent of life.

William Barkley talked about the generosity of giving.

You said, this man is not a real evangelical commentator.

Don't read too much into him or his books, but some of the things, because he doesn't believe in virgin birth and miracles, but he's a great British uh historian of the Christian church.

He talks about how a Christian sees everything in the light and against the background of eternity.

Bacley says he will no longer live as if this world was all that mattered.

He will see this world against the background of the larger world of eternity.

He will, for instance, set giving about getting.

That's what I made a commitment when God called me to full-time ministry 41 years ago.

Because all the preachers in India I noticed, including those that came to my home as a little boy, my father was uh uh officer in the government, and most preachers didn't have an income, proper income.

So they would come every time, a salary day, and just pray and expect and wait until my father put some money in their pocket.

I said, Lord, I will not ever ask people for money.

I'm going to serve the King of Kings.

And well, the Lord took care of me.

Karen reminded me of that hospital time.

Four months I was there in two hospitals, and the Lord provided, and the word she used was providence.

Isn't that wonderful?

He will, Bakley says, for instance, set giving about getting, serving about ruling, forgiving above avenging.

The Christian will see things not as they appear to men, but as they appear to God.

And I want to close with this aspect.

The first is outward, and the second is inward.

Robertson, another commentator, said the Christian has to keep his feet upon the earth, but his head in the heavens.

One flesh with Christ.

In other words, the head is Christ.

He's seated at the right hand of majesty, and I have to keep my feet and yet live.

It's as if I'm living in the sea.

But as long as when I'm in the water, as long as the head is above the water, ah, I'm safe and secure.

I live.

In the same manner, I believe the head is in the heavens, he will not drown ever.

Death has no dominion over him.

But I must pursue.

The two commands differ in that the first emphasis the more practical pursuits of life, whereas the second stresses the whole bent of life.

Let's close.

And I quote C.S.

Lewis because Colton mentioned a quote from him.

Lewis said, Aim at heaven, you will get earth thrown in.

Aim at earth, you get neither.

Isn't it true?

Finally, the empowerment of a believer in Christ.

Where Christ is seated at the right hand of God, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God, and when He comes, well, the coming of the Lord is nigh.

More people in New Zealand and Australia have asked me to speak on second coming than any other topic.

And so I'm excited.

When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

My friend, we are hidden away with Christ.

No one can snatch us away.

It's like the safety deposit in a vault, bank vault.

You trust the bank more than trusting in Christ.

Trust in Christ.

Your life is hidden away with Christ in God.

And secondly, our nourishment is drawn from the springs of life or secret springs.

The Lord feeds us.

One of the great joys I have this such friends, Sam and others in many parts of the world that I travel.

And minister.

Everywhere I go, God has someone to take care of my earthly needs.

Food, water, or even the people in the pushing the wheelchair.

The way I smile, I think.

You see, the smile is put by Jesus and the world cannot take it away.

And more people have come to Christ through that smile while I'm as in the uh hospital learning to speak through smile.

And that's why Dr.

Seephon Alford, if you anyone have heard of him, last generation, one of the giants of the last generation, uh he had a Thanksgiving service, a reception after I came back from the hospital and about to go to India along with my brother who came to take me home.

And uh he preached on Psalm 100, and the title of the sermon was Serving with a Smile.

That's what I did, I thank God.

And finally, the expectation of a believer, the revelation of Christ in glory, the rapture reveals the glorious Christ to the church.

The moment the rapture takes place, we see him as he is, and we will be transformed to his likeness.

The return reveals the glorious Christ to the world, and that's going to be a horrible thing because he's coming to judge them.

Whereas he's coming to rescue us, the bodies will rise up.

Last year, five in my family, Saturn family, died.

I buried three and uh spoke at their funeral service.

The fourth and the fifth, I wasn't available.

But they're all going to rise up when Christ returns.

The revelation of Christ or revelation of the church with Christ in glory.

Now in Christ, but then with Christ.

Isn't it amazing?

It's a mystery.

Now we are in Christ, but then with Christ.

Wow.

But this is all only for this reason the results of this kind of a life, that your union with Christ is in the fifth verse onwards.

You can, the screen has it, and fifth onwards, where the apostle Paul's Paul mentions in order to live this kind of a union with Christ, you have to die to sin.

There are lists of sin.

Sin of impurity, immorality, sexual immorality, and everything else.

There they are.

Impurity, passion, evil desire, greed, which amounts to idolatry.

And we need to die to sin.

And then eighth verse and to 11th verse, he says, put off.

There are certain things you need to put off.

Like the clothes.

I've been all of you nicely sitting comfortably with the air conditioned, but I'm sweating inside.

I know what I'll do when I get to the room in the evening.

We're driving to Kentucky.

And I'm going to take off my dirty clothes and shower.

That's exactly what the Apostle Paul is saying.

Some we need to put off and take away.

And then after you put off, you need to put on fresh, clean clothes.

And the list is given from the 12th verse to 17th verse, the kind of clothing from the innerwear to the outerwear and the kind of lifestyle Christian should have.

My friend, union with Christ.

And he's coming.

But some of you may be backslidden.

You're still living in sin, claiming to be a Christian.

Do you want to come back to Christ?

He's coming back again.

The joyful life that we have here, the victorious Christian life that He wants you to have.

You're missing that opportunity, the blessing.

Come back to Christ.

Return.

Repent.

And then stop practicing these lifestyles.

My own body tells me these clothes are dirty now.

I've got to put away them.

In the same way, your spiritual life, the Holy Spirit tells you, warns you, you need to have a cleansing with the blood of Jesus Christ.

Come back to Christ.

Who among you are saying that, Lord, I need your help?

After the communion, we have a prayer.

On this side, I think that side.

You can go.

The pastors will be there, and I'll be there.

The prayer team will be there to help you.

Or maybe there's someone who never knew the Lord Jesus Christ, never born again.

Living in a Christian country, you think you're a Christian.

No.

You're dead in your sins and trespasses, the Bible says.

You need to be born again, made alive.

And that happens when you acknowledge Jesus Christ as God.

Jesus Christ died for you on the cross at Calvary for your sins.

And he rose again.

And you acknowledge that, Lord, please forgive my sin.

I want you to be king of my life and open my heart right now.

You can do that quietly in a moment of prayer.

Let's all pray.

Bow our heads in prayer.

Whatever that need is, I don't know.

If the Holy Spirit and the scriptures have spoken to you and convicted you of any particular need, if there's a sin in your life that you need to die to, or if you need to put off those dirty clothes of sinful clothes, or put on Christ, please do that right now.

Father, we pray that your grace will be sufficient to us this morning.

Thank you for speaking to us.

And those that are called out by God, may they respond positively to what God is calling them to do.
