  1. Take your Bibles from John 15 this morning. John 15 as we talk about fruit that remains.

  2. ! But I just wanted to encourage you here this morning for just a thought here. You know, when we have an

  3. ! instrumental special like that, one of the things that you can do and is very helpful for you is going

  4. to benefit you is why they're playing. And I know that's something to enjoy, but be thinking about

  5. how you prepare your heart for the message that's going to follow. You know, to really concentrate

  6. upon what the Lord would have for you. You know, because we need to keep in mind one thing, that

  7. church is not for our entertainment. There's things we can feel, get our attention and grab a hold of

  8. us and even touch us, but you know, it's not there about us, it's about Him. And we ought to focus our

  9. things on that. I appreciate Matt playing this morning. And, but when you have those opportunities,

  10. I just want to encourage you to be thinking in that line instead of just kind of listening along,

  11. be thinking, Lord, how are you going to prepare me through this? And to do that. And so just

  12. something for thought there, be benefit to you. And as you prepare each Sunday, you know, if you come

  13. prayed up, you're going to get something. You know, I want to let you know that if you don't get

  14. something at church, it's probably because you're not prayed up. Because you're not happening what

  15. exactly we're talking about here, and that's abiding in the vine. You know, you're going to feel distant

  16. if you're not attached to the vine. And that's the reason Jesus had spent much time as they made their

  17. way to the garden here, as we see in John 15. You know, he knew there'd be one that would soon betray

  18. him. And that it'd be one that was known by the other 11. And that he understood the essential nature

  19. of this time. And he understood the need to comprehend that necessity of abiding in him, the true vine.

  20. You know, because the disciples were about ready to go through a very difficult, what you might say,

  21. pruning process. God was going to put them through some things that was going to challenge them in a

  22. great way. Hey, Darren, can you turn that, my mic down just a touch? It's kind of echoing up here.

  23. I'm hearing myself twice. And I want you to understand that even as we go through a pruning process in our

  24. life, that God prepares us for it. You know, remember Jesus, last week we talked, Jesus talked

  25. about a friend tells you what's going to happen. You know what? When you're connected to the vine,

  26. connected to Jesus Christ, he tells you that there's going to be some pruning process happen in your life.

  27. You know, he doesn't promise you everything's always going to be great. But what he does say,

  28. it's for your good, it's for your benefit, it's for his glory. You know, I want you to understand that

  29. it's not always easy, but it is what the master says is best to produce fruit. You know, because

  30. one of the things I think we have a problem with in society, especially amongst believers today,

  31. we all think, what is in it for me? You know what? A branch on the vine isn't about how bushy it can get

  32. and how prosperous it may look. It's about what fruit does it develop. You know, the measure of a

  33. branch is by the fruit that's developed upon it. And the importance of it, today we're going to be

  34. talking about the fruit that remains, because Jesus made it clear that if they're not a part with,

  35. if they're not a part of him, that branch is no longer getting substance that it needs

  36. from the vine, fruit is going to linger. Fruit is going to be shriveled up. Fruit is going to be

  37. non-existent. But you know, you were saved to produce fruit for God's glory. You know, and fruit to our

  38. account is, we're going to look here this morning, fruit that remains. And he tells us why he's doing

  39. all of this because he understood the importance of it, that a believer would abide in him, just as his

  40. disciples were about to face a very challenging moment. You know, I don't know if you ever stopped

  41. to think about what the disciples went through as Jesus went to the cross. What was going through

  42. their mind? That they had given three and a half years of their lives following the one they thought

  43. in their mind was the Messiah. Now he's telling them, hey, we're going to go to the cross and die.

  44. But he says, you know, be of good cheer. You know, understand something. I'm going to rise again.

  45. But you know, just like them, oftentimes we hear the first part, not the second part.

  46. We don't understand what was going on. They were going to go through a very challenging time.

  47. It was going to try them in many ways. And Jesus said, you need to abide in difficulties.

  48. To understand, because as we've been talking through this series, you know, where a branch stays,

  49. a branch bears. You know, when you think about that reality, when you're attached to the vine,

  50. you will survive. You will produce fruit. You will become fruitful. It's just a dynamic of it.

  51. You know, when the branch stays, the fruit stays also. And he tells these 11 men that he did not,

  52. that they did not choose him, but he chose them for what he was going to do, to send them out.

  53. And that's what they were to do. They were supposed to bring forth fruit that will remain. So the

  54. question this morning is not whether you've been fruitful for a moment, but I want you to think

  55. about, is your fruit something that's going to remain? Is this something that has substance in your

  56. life? Everything from your character to eternal fruit that's laid up in heaven where moth and rust is

  57. not corrupt? Because I want you to understand, Jesus isn't looking just in the future, but he's looking

  58. in the present. That there ought to be fruit present in your life. That's the essence of what Jesus is

  59. telling him. No matter what, there ought to be fruit. So if you found John 15 this morning, let's stand

  60. together in honor of reading of the word of God. And we'll read here verses 16 and 17, and we'll have

  61. a word of prayer. And then we'll get into the message here this morning. So let's look here at verse 16.

  62. He says, you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you that you should go forth and

  63. bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain. That whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my

  64. name, he may give it you. These things I command you that you love one another. Let's pray. Heavenly

  65. Fathers, we just come before you this morning, Lord, once again. Lord, we're thankful that you are the one

  66. that sustains. You're the one that provides. Lord, you're the life giver of everything in our lives.

  67. Lord, that our fruit is dependent upon you and us staying in you, abiding in you, remaining in you.

  68. And Lord, help us to see the necessity of even the challenges of life that we might stick to you.

  69. Lord, we might abide. Lord, we understand the principle here. And Lord, we pray that we might apply

  70. that truth. And Lord, we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name. Amen. May be seated.

  71. You know, as we see here, God starts, Jesus starts out with a very direct statement as he looks at these

  72. 11. He says, I have chosen you. You know, he tells them that very clearly. You have not chosen me,

  73. but I have chosen you and ordained you. Now, this is important because this is where some people get

  74. confused because the question is, what did Jesus choose them and ordain them to do?

  75. Because he didn't choose them to salvation. That's not the context of the passage.

  76. People will twist it that way, but I want you to understand that's not the context. He's talking to

  77. a group of men who had something very important happen in their life. I want you to understand they

  78. were chosen and ordained for a purpose. Their purpose was to be a foundation of the church that

  79. Jesus was going to form and to put forth. And as the churches go forth in the order and things

  80. established by the prophets and apostles, these men were chosen for a very specific task for a very

  81. specific time. They were chosen for responsibility. And we're going to see, because I want you to

  82. understand that it's not just them. God, when you get saved, God has chosen you. He has placed you.

  83. He's got some things for you. But we want you to see that they did this. These individuals, if you

  84. understand the New Testament, you'll find that God chose them out from among all that followed.

  85. Jesus didn't have 12 guys following him. When he chose the 12, there wasn't just 12 in the crowd.

  86. They didn't get selected because they showed up. The Bible tells us and makes it very clear that

  87. they were chosen. They were appointed by Jesus to the apostolic office. And he's speaking now to 11

  88. of them because Judas is having gone out. And that's a whole other thing to talk about on a different

  89. time. You can get on a whole rabbit trail about Judas. But I want you to understand that what Judas did

  90. was already foretold. The Old Testament told exactly what Judas was going to do.

  91. It did not catch Jesus by surprise. That's a whole different dynamic. But I want you to understand,

  92. Judas is gone. And it was an office that no man can just take on themselves. When he put,

  93. Jesus put those 11. At this point, he says, I've chosen you. I have ordained you. And he put them

  94. forth. I want you to understand, they had a specific task and responsibility given unto them.

  95. They were selected for this purpose. That's the chosen that it's talking about. Because these men

  96. were chosen out of a crowd of learners and qualified by years of following Jesus. And they laid a foundation

  97. in the church. Now look over Ephesians chapter 2 for a moment. Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 20.

Ephesians 2 chapter mention Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  98. And it says, and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being

  99. the chief cornerstone. What's that talking about? It's talking about the church. A local church. And I

  100. want you to understand, it's not a universal church. It's a particular, each church is independent before God.

  101. Amen. It's the only way it works. I've never seen a universal assembly of the saints. But I have seen a

  102. physical assembly of the called out believers in an area gathering together. That's a reality

  103. that we see. But he says, built upon the foundation of the apostles. These men had a commissioning to go

  104. forth. It's not a statement though about their salvation. Because salvation, I want you to understand,

  105. was to whosoever will may come. Jesus made it very clear when speaking to Nicodemus. It says,

  106. whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. You know, the whosoevers.

  107. You know, I love that song we sang a few weeks ago. Whosoever will. You know, I'm glad that God

  108. didn't condemn some to hell and put some in heaven. He put it upon you and I as an individual say,

  109. what am I going to do with God's free gift of salvation? God offers it freely.

  110. But a gift is only good if you accept it. That if you take it, you know, Peter goes a little later

  111. and says this. He says, the Lord is not slack concerning his promises. Some men count slackness,

  112. but is longsuffering to us. We're not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to

  113. repentance. You know, that is key to understand that God doesn't rejoice in the death of the wicked.

  114. You know what God desires for everybody to turn to him? But you know what the reality is? Many people

  115. reject him. Very blatantly. We live in a society today that wants to blatantly reject God.

  116. Reject his truth. That's the reason we have people celebrating a mom who slaughters her children

  117. in a place that wants moms to be able to murder their babies up to the moment right before birth.

  118. You know what that is? That is against nature. That's against God's creation. It's a rebellion,

  119. an open rebellion against God. God didn't reject them. They rejected him. I want you to understand

  120. that because the world wants you to think opposite. That God hates people. When you think about it,

  121. I want you to think about when you hear people talk, their opinion is, God wants to just judge me.

  122. God doesn't want to judge you. He provided a way for you not to be judged. He said, I took the penalty

  123. of your judgment upon myself. That's a loving God that prepared. And Jesus said, I'm preparing you to do

  124. this, preparing you to go forth as I would describe and desire for you to do. But their office is

  125. something that God put them in for a particular time at a particular place, and they were going to

  126. have to walk in it. I want you to understand, we talked about this a couple of Wednesdays ago about

  127. what is an apostle. So if you weren't here on Wednesday, you can go back and look at that. That should be up

  128. online. We spent about 25 minutes talking about an apostle. So I'm not going to get back into all the

  129. details of that. So you can go back and reference that if you want, and where we talk about all that. But I want

  130. you to understand that the apostolic office is closed today. It closed in the New Testament.

  131. When those men died off, they were not replaced. But I want you to understand there are something

  132. about us today because God has chosen us in a different way. Similar in a parallel way because

  133. we're not called or chosen to be apostles, but we are a chosen generation. We are set apart for him.

  134. He has chosen us for a purpose. When you called upon him, he made it very clear. This reality, Ephesians 2

  135. in verse 10 tells us this, for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus under good works with God

  136. hath before ordained that we should walk in them. You know what? If you're saved, God has ordained,

  137. God has chosen you to be obedient and to walk in those things that he has instructed. But oftentimes,

  138. we miss the point that it's a responsibility. When we understand what Jesus is telling them here,

  139. the reality of this, and so I don't want you to just sit here this morning and think that what Jesus

  140. ordained them to accomplish is finished because what he sent them to do is still going on in the sense that

  141. we follow through. You know, look a little later. Look over to John 17. Just turn over a page in your Bible

  142. there, and you'll find as you look at John 17, and you look down in verse 20, Jesus here in John 17

  143. is his great priestly prayer before he goes to the cross, and he says this, for them also which shall

  144. believe on me through their word. In other words, we are a continuation of what took place.

  145. If you're saved today, Jesus was praying for you right then. You're a part of the fruit that remained.

  146. I want you to understand every church that is a true church of Jesus Christ that follows the

  147. scripture, follow those things. I want you to understand is the reality of what Jesus is telling

  148. there's going to be fruit that remains. We are fruit that remains when you partake in what

  149. Christ has done. It's a lasting dynamic. Bible tells us that Jesus is the one that's going to build it,

  150. and the devil's not going to prevail against it. When we understand what's happening here,

  151. that he's sending them forth, and this dynamic applies to us, the branch that abides is a branch

  152. that bears, and it applies to us just as it did to them. Because look here at verse 16 again,

  153. and he tells them this, that you should go and bring forth fruit. He sent them for a reason. He sent

  154. that the fruit might remain, that your fruit should remain. You know, we see here that he tells them

  155. and instructs them. He says to go. I want you to understand if you're going to follow Jesus, it takes

  156. some action. You don't follow Jesus in a chair. You follow Jesus by doing. Following is an active

  157. participation. I want you to understand. Jesus is telling them this dynamic and understood that fruit

  158. ought to be something that makes a difference in your life to go and to do. Jesus gives us instructions

  159. to go. You know, the gospel doesn't go out by osmosis. The gospel's validated by your life,

  160. but it's shared when it goes forth. When you tell somebody about what Jesus has done in your life,

  161. that I'm not just a good, I'm not good in your eyes of the choices I make because of who I am,

  162. but it's because of who he is. You know, oftentimes I think we get a little self-righteous and think

  163. we're good because of ourselves. We forget that we're a sinner saved by grace and our goodness

  164. and righteousness and everything is in Christ. It's only in him that makes a difference. That's the

  165. reason this abiding is essential for us to go and to do what he would want us to do because when we

  166. think about this fruit, the going produces fruit. And these, you know, a couple weeks ago we talked about

  167. that fruit in our life. We talked about three areas. We talked about our character, our conduct,

  168. and converts. Who did your life impact? How was your character? You know, I want you to understand

  169. fruit isn't just seeing people saved. Fruit is abiding. It's all of the above. Because I want you

  170. to understand sometimes people replace abiding with saying, well, I handed out 2,000 tracts. I want you

  171. to say that might be a good thing, but if you didn't abide with Jesus, you missed the point. Well, some

  172. people say, well, I'm abiding, but I never share. You know, you missed the point. Because notice what he

  173. tells them here, that you should go and bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain.

  174. What ought to remain in you? You know, Romans chapter 6 tells us this in verse 22. It says,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  175. now being made free from sin and become service to God, you have your fruit unto holiness and the

  176. end everlasting life. I want you to understand holiness in your life is not seasonal. The vine that grows

  177. in our character and it ends in everlasting life. You know, I want you to understand that your character

  178. of where God really works in your life happens under pressure. What are you abiding in? You know,

  179. a believer's character shows up under pressure. Not when everything's good. When life presses down on us,

  180. when things get difficult, when things are a challenge, is when you find out, am I connected to the vine or has

  181. everything been strangled? Because if you're connected to the vine, it doesn't matter. When something weighs in your

  182. life, you're going to be able to withstand it, whether it's a wind, the drought, or even the husbandman

  183. that comes and prunes in our life, what comes out is whatever the vine has been feeding it. You know,

  184. I want you to understand, if you abide in the vine, you're going to be provided with what you need.

  185. He's going to take care of you.

  186. He's one that's going to provide the nourishment of your life that your character might stay intact.

  187. Because when God allows a hard thing in your life, He's not manufacturing your character. He's revealing

  188. are you actually have godly character that you ought to have. How do you respond under pressure?

  189. Is what He's producing growing in your life?

  190. You know, James chapter 1 tells us this. He says,

    James 1 chapter mention

  191. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into diverse temptations, knowing this, that the trying

  192. of your faith worketh patience, and let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire,

  193. wanting nothing. What's James talking about there? He's talking about abiding in the vine,

  194. that you might stay nourished. You might have that joy, that peace, that love, all those things of your

  195. character that ought to come forth from the Spirit of God being viable in your life. When you're yielded to

  196. the Spirit, you will do those things. Those things will come forth. I want you to understand, a trial

  197. doesn't make you. A trial reveals what you've been abiding in.

  198. What you've been trusting in. When life gets hard and it affects your relationship to the Lord,

  199. you need to evaluate some things. Because if it didn't make the connection stronger,

  200. there's an abiding problem. Preacher, that's hard. That's what Jesus is telling them.

  201. He says, guys, if you're going to go through this difficulty, you must continue to abide.

  202. Because it not only remains in you, it remains in others. You know, think about 1 Thessalonians 2.

  203. It says, for what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Not even ye in the presence of our Lord

  204. Jesus Christ is coming, for ye are our glory and joy. You know, Paul's saying the fruit

  205. had names and faces in his life, the ones he impacted. Everybody from Timothy that we're

  206. talking about on Wednesday night, the impact and the fruit that had been produced in Timothy's life

  207. through his abiding in Christ. And Paul makes note of it as he writes to him. But I want you to

  208. understand, your fruit doesn't just remain here. Fruit is everlasting to your account.

  209. You know, Romans chapter 7 says, but you also become dead to the law by the body of Christ that

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  210. you should bring forth fruit unto God. I want you to understand, when you get saved,

  211. your fruit isn't unto yourself. Your fruit is something that's unto God. It's for his glory

  212. and his honor. The union with the risen Christ is essential. The fruit follows. The fruit is unto God,

  213. not us. You know, that's the reason 1 Corinthians chapter 3 talks about there's different things

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  214. that we produce in our life, and some of them are wood, hay, and stubble, and they're burned up. Gold,

  215. silver, and precious stones, it talks about. Things that survive the fire. Things that are laid up in

  216. heaven. I want you to understand that when Jesus talks about our treasures being laid up in heaven,

  217. he isn't referring about sending ahead a 401k. He's not talking about how much money you can send

  218. forth. He's talking about fruit. The fruit in your life to his glory. Because that's the reality.

  219. You know, Mark, notice here how it remains. The word rendered here, abide, is the same one in verse 4.

  220. It talks about remain. That's the same word. Abide and remain are doing the same task.

  221. Your fruit will stay. It'll be something that is there. The fruit stays where the branch stays.

  222. A severed branch does not keep its grapes. They go off with it. It's a necessity that the reality of

  223. continuing. And here, I want you to understand this carefully. Not that you're standing with his

  224. hands by the strength of your grip. I want you to understand that no man plucks him out of heaven.

  225. We're not talking about salvation here. That's important to keep in mind. What we're talking

  226. about today is not salvation when it comes to abiding. Because you don't put yourself in salvation.

  227. Salvation happens when you recognize the free gift that God has given to you. And Jesus says that once

  228. you're saved, he has you. Nobody can take you out of his hand. You don't care what other people say.

  229. I'll trust God. I'm glad that my security

  230. in him isn't dependent upon how much I can hold on.

  231. The abiding is different.

  232. It means you're already attached. You're already there.

  233. And you have a choice of what you're going to do with it.

  234. How are you going to bring forth fruit?

  235. And Jesus is encouraging these men

  236. because they were about to face a challenge

  237. that many people would probably

  238. wane away from.

  239. Going to feel isolated.

  240. Going to have people that want to kill them.

  241. But Jesus said remain.

  242. Abide.

  243. Trust me. Do those things.

  244. Reveal the reality of it.

  245. I want you to understand that

  246. fruit which is no longer fed does not keep.

  247. You know, think about Psalm 1.

  248. Psalm 1 says,

  249. And he shall be planted by the rivers of waters

  250. that bringeth forth his fruit and his season.

  251. His leaf also shall not wither.

  252. What a powerful reality.

  253. Colossians tells us, he says,

  254. Rooted and built up in him

  255. and established in the faith.

  256. The reality of abiding

  257. and the importance of it

  258. which brings us back to the hard thing

  259. that God has allowed in your life.

  260. It will do one of two things.

  261. It will either drive you deeper

  262. to the vine

  263. or it will pull you out of fellowship with him.

  264. As you stop feeding

  265. and you stop abiding

  266. you stop fellowshipping with him

  267. and the fruit will tell on you either way.

  268. You know why Christians keep fading

  269. farther and farther away?

  270. Because they stop abiding.

  271. Remember we talked about abiding

  272. getting that nourishment from the vine.

  273. His word, prayer.

  274. You know it amazes me

  275. how many people

  276. can read the Bible

  277. and say they say a prayer

  278. but they never live godly.

  279. I think the problem is

  280. we read with our eyes

  281. and not our mind.

  282. Our reading is a task

  283. and not a connection.

  284. To be rooted and built up.

  285. The fruit will tell on you

  286. trials don't cut off the branch.

  287. He holds it

  288. but it does decide

  289. whether the branch keeps drawing

  290. and what it needs

  291. for nourishment to continue.

  292. You know we talked a few weeks ago

  293. about that

  294. about the joy.

  295. Jesus says

  296. my joy might remain in you.

  297. He says guys

  298. you're going to have a lot of pressure.

  299. Life is going to go upside down.

  300. You're going to be shaken.

  301. You're going to have

  302. all sorts of adversity.

  303. And he says

  304. but you ought to still have joy.

  305. In our minds

  306. it doesn't make sense

  307. and Jesus said

  308. hey if you abide in me

  309. you will have my joy.

  310. It makes a difference.

  311. When we understand

  312. the picture here

  313. that you might be joy

  314. he doesn't say

  315. that you might be joyful.

  316. He says that my joy

  317. might remain in you.

  318. You know today we say

  319. I want the emotion.

  320. I want the feeling.

  321. But I want you to understand

  322. joy is not an emotion.

  323. The joy that Jesus

  324. talked about here

  325. is a calm reassurance

  326. that he has it under control.

  327. You know we live in a generation

  328. that everything's run

  329. off the cuff of emotion.

  330. Jesus doesn't tell us

  331. to run our life

  332. from emotion.

  333. How I feel about it

  334. doesn't matter

  335. in a lot of ways.

  336. Now that's hard

  337. for people to grab a hold of.

  338. I know a lot of people

  339. don't agree with me

  340. because people want to live

  341. by their emotions.

  342. How does it feel?

  343. What does it make me

  344. you know

  345. oh that didn't feel good

  346. so I'm not going to do it.

  347. It's like you know what

  348. some of the best things in life

  349. are things you did

  350. that were uncomfortable.

  351. That took you outside

  352. of your comfort zone.

  353. When you step out

  354. by faith to follow Christ

  355. it's going to step you

  356. outside your comfort zone.

  357. But you know what

  358. a lot of people

  359. won't step out

  360. their comfort zone.

  361. I have a box

  362. and a perimeter

  363. and say

  364. I'm perfectly content

  365. where I am.

  366. I'm not going to be obedient

  367. in this area

  368. or that area.

  369. I don't know

  370. what that area

  371. might be in your life

  372. but I guarantee

  373. we all struggle

  374. with areas

  375. where we say

  376. Lord

  377. I don't know

  378. if I can be obedient

  379. to that.

  380. But you know what

  381. Jesus said

  382. trust me

  383. abide in me.

  384. Because look here

  385. what he promises them

  386. here

  387. he says this

  388. that whatsoever

  389. you shall ask

  390. of the Father

  391. in my name

  392. he may give it you.

  393. You know

  394. the sender

  395. supplies the sent.

  396. In other words

  397. Jesus said

  398. if you abide in me

  399. I'm going to supply

  400. what's needed.

  401. It's amazing

  402. the Bible talks about

  403. us being

  404. there's a spiritual war

  405. going on around us.

  406. When you look at

  407. history of warfare

  408. you know one of the

  409. biggest reasons

  410. that armies lose?

  411. Supply chain.

  412. No matter how big

  413. your army is

  414. if it's not supplied

  415. with what it's need

  416. it will be overrun

  417. by an enemy

  418. that's supplied.

  419. Abiding means

  420. in the midst of trial

  421. in the midst of struggle

  422. I'm connecting

  423. to my supply chain.

  424. Prayer is one of those

  425. connections

  426. to your supply.

  427. He supplies

  428. as he says

  429. that whatsoever

  430. you ask

  431. of the Father

  432. in my name

  433. he may give it

  434. you.

  435. You know

  436. think about

  437. John 16

  438. he says this

  439. and in that day

  440. you shall ask me

  441. nothing

  442. verily verily

  443. I say unto you

  444. whatsoever

  445. you shall ask

  446. the Father

  447. in my name

  448. he will give it you

  449. hitherto

  450. you have asked

  451. nothing

  452. in my name

  453. ask

  454. and you shall

  455. receive

  456. that your joy

  457. may be full.

  458. You know

  459. what he's saying?

  460. hey

  461. your joy

  462. that is in me

  463. my joy

  464. is channeled

  465. through

  466. your connection.

  467. You cannot

  468. receive

  469. the supply

  470. you need

  471. if you're not

  472. connected

  473. to the one

  474. who supplies it.

  475. It's important

  476. for us to understand

  477. because the one

  478. who is sent

  479. is given access

  480. to the resources

  481. of the sender.

  482. Jesus is saying

  483. you can go forth

  484. you can have confidence

  485. you can abide

  486. and understand

  487. there's going to be

  488. fruit that remains

  489. because there's going

  490. to be a flow

  491. of supply

  492. to meet the need

  493. in the moment.

  494. Look up at verse 7

  495. he told him earlier

  496. it says

  497. if ye abide in me

  498. and my word

  499. abide in you

  500. you shall ask

  501. what ye will

  502. and it shall be done

  503. unto you.

  504. Here in verse 16

  505. he brings this very idea

  506. again to them

  507. he connects it

  508. to the supply.

  509. Christ opens

  510. this section

  511. with a promise

  512. of prayer

  513. and closes it

  514. with a promise

  515. in prayer

  516. and everything

  517. between the two

  518. much fruit

  519. his joy

  520. love one another

  521. fruit that remains

  522. is what the promise

  523. is for.

  524. I want you to understand

  525. Jesus promises

  526. these things

  527. but he says

  528. this is how they get there.

  529. If you're not connected

  530. to the supply chain

  531. you will miss out.

  532. there's a lack

  533. of those things

  534. in your life

  535. you ought to check

  536. and see how is my

  537. supply chain working.

  538. It's important

  539. to grab a hold of

  540. because we notice here

  541. that he fences

  542. these promises

  543. with the word abiding

  544. his word abiding

  545. in us

  546. and in my name

  547. he puts those things

  548. together

  549. it's not a phrase

  550. to close in prayer with

  551. but to ask

  552. as his representative

  553. on an errand

  554. with his authority.

  555. I want you to understand

  556. Jesus said

  557. I've already determined

  558. you will have

  559. the supply

  560. that you need

  561. if you're connected

  562. to it.

  563. You remain

  564. if you abide

  565. but if you disconnect

  566. now remember

  567. we're not talking

  568. about salvation

  569. we're talking

  570. about fellowship.

  571. People get that confused

  572. because once you're

  573. part of God's family

  574. at the moment

  575. of salvation

  576. nothing changes

  577. the family connection.

  578. you are legally

  579. placed in the family

  580. of God.

  581. Jesus referred to

  582. as adoption.

  583. You know

  584. people get in a family

  585. two ways

  586. you're either born

  587. or you're adopted.

  588. Jesus says

  589. you must be born again

  590. and then he puts it

  591. a little later

  592. and he says

  593. that you're adopted

  594. you're placed in

  595. in other words

  596. he says

  597. not only

  598. are you there

  599. by the blood

  600. of Jesus Christ

  601. that purchased you

  602. that you're born again by

  603. but he says

  604. I'm going to put

  605. a legal stamp on it

  606. and adopt you.

  607. That's security.

  608. He says

  609. I want to leave

  610. no question

  611. so we can be secure

  612. but I want you

  613. to understand

  614. that we can have

  615. confidence

  616. you know

  617. look over what

  618. 1 John tells us

  619. 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  620. and verse 14

  621. tells us this

  622. and it says

  623. this is the confidence

  624. that we have in him

  625. that if we ask

  626. anything according

  627. to his will

  628. he heareth us

  629. and if we know

  630. that he hear us

  631. whatsoever we ask

  632. we know

  633. that we'll have

  634. the petition

  635. that we desired

  636. of him.

  637. Now I want you

  638. to understand

  639. that's not a name

  640. and claimant

  641. that's saying

  642. according to his will

  643. if you're abiding

  644. in him

  645. and you have

  646. his supply

  647. you're going to say

  648. Lord I want some more

  649. of your supply

  650. in this.

  651. Not my supply

  652. but your supply

  653. what I need.

  654. Put this together

  655. whether the word

  656. decides what you ask

  657. for and the name

  658. decides whether

  659. it's his business.

  660. In other words

  661. he says

  662. if you're about

  663. my business

  664. if you're abiding

  665. and doing what

  666. you're supposed to do

  667. Jesus said

  668. I will supply.

  669. We have a God

  670. that's greater

  671. than any other.

  672. What about the sequence?

  673. Abide

  674. ask

  675. bear

  676. and remain.

  677. The asking

  678. is not the

  679. branch straining

  680. it's the branch

  681. drawing

  682. the resources

  683. that are offered

  684. to it.

  685. Given those things

  686. because notice

  687. look at verse 17

  688. and it says

  689. these things

  690. I command you

  691. that you love

  692. one another.

  693. Finds us back

  694. to the reality

  695. of fruit

  696. to love

  697. one another.

  698. The fruit

  699. is to love

  700. one another.

  701. Now I want

  702. to make this

  703. very clear

  704. because sometimes

  705. people get this

  706. confused.

  707. Text in the

  708. scripture

  709. is important.

  710. who's he

  711. talking about?

  712. He's talking

  713. about the

  714. other believers.

  715. He said

  716. the family

  717. tie

  718. ought to

  719. supersede

  720. everything else.

  721. To understand

  722. the fruit

  723. he names

  724. is to love

  725. one another.

  726. These things

  727. I command you

  728. that you love

  729. one another.

  730. It lands

  731. back here.

  732. It means

  733. this dynamic

  734. love isn't

  735. just oh

  736. I love you.

  737. I want you

  738. to understand

  739. think about

  740. the descriptions

  741. you find

  742. of love

  743. in the

  744. scripture.

  745. Love

  746. involves

  747. being

  748. patient.

  749. Oh preacher

  750. you're asking

  751. a lot.

  752. This person

  753. is prickly.

  754. You want

  755. me to have

  756. patience?

  757. They make

  758. me uncomfortable.

  759. Yes.

  760. Being kind.

  761. Talks about

  762. love being

  763. kind.

  764. Oh no

  765. we got another

  766. one.

  767. Long

  768. suffering.

  769. They get

  770. that right.

  771. Do they

  772. know they

  773. offended me?

  774. Probably not.

  775. But they

  776. do.

  777. Jesus loved

  778. you.

  779. He was

  780. long

  781. suffering.

  782. Giving.

  783. Oh.

  784. You know

  785. that's the

  786. fruit that

  787. remains.

  788. Kindness.

  789. Long

  790. suffering.

  791. Forgiving.

  792. Restoring.

  793. Is willing

  794. to reconcile.

  795. Problems is

  796. a lot of

  797. people refuse

  798. to reconcile.

  799. We would

  800. live by the

  801. principle and

  802. the fruit that

  803. God gives

  804. us.

  805. What he

  806. gives us to

  807. sustain and

  808. produce fruit.

  809. These are the

  810. things that will

  811. be produced in

  812. life.

  813. Biggest

  814. problems with

  815. couples when

  816. they're married

  817. is a failure

  818. to forgive.

  819. A failure of

  820. long suffering.

  821. Why don't they

  822. change right

  823. now?

  824. You know

  825. instead of

  826. worrying about

  827. them you

  828. ought to worry

  829. about yourself.

  830. What are you

  831. doing that needs

  832. to be different?

  833. Are you

  834. willing to

  835. say Lord I'm

  836. going to love

  837. them because

  838. love isn't an

  839. emotion attached

  840. to them it's a

  841. choice attached

  842. to them.

  843. It's forces and

  844. be kind one to

  845. another tender

  846. hearted forgiving

  847. one another even

  848. as God for

  849. Christ's sake

  850. hath forgiven

  851. you.

  852. It's a theme

  853. you'll find

  854. through this

  855. section of

  856. scripture.

  857. He commands

  858. it to 11

  859. men who are

  860. in an hour

  861. about to be

  862. scattered.

  863. Their love

  864. one for

  865. another was

  866. to be the

  867. fruit that

  868. had to

  869. survive not

  870. only that

  871. night but

  872. the things

  873. to come.

  874. They had to

  875. hold it

  876. together.

  877. You know

  878. what happened

  879. is they did

  880. what Jesus

  881. told them to

  882. do.

  883. They held

  884. things together

  885. when they saw

  886. Christ resurrected

  887. it changed.

  888. On the day of

  889. Pentecost they

  890. saw great fruit

  891. they saw

  892. 3,000 souls

  893. come to the

  894. Lord because

  895. there was already

  896. other fruit

  897. present.

  898. One for

  899. another.

  900. Their long

  901. suffering towards

  902. one another.

  903. Understand the

  904. disciples weren't

  905. a bunch of

  906. guys that sat

  907. around and

  908. sang

  909. Kubayah

  910. together.

  911. They were

  912. men who

  913. were focused

  914. together on

  915. the principle

  916. of what Christ

  917. had called

  918. them to do.

  919. They had to

  920. lay aside

  921. their personalities

  922. their preferences

  923. to the fact

  924. that I want

  925. to abide

  926. in the vine.

  927. Those things

  928. are secondary

  929. to what he's

  930. chosen us

  931. to do.

  932. The same

  933. is true

  934. for you

  935. and I

  936. today.

  937. Understand

  938. being part

  939. of God's

  940. family and

  941. abiding

  942. isn't about

  943. a personality

  944. of us

  945. it's about

  946. the person

  947. of Jesus

  948. Christ.

  949. Our eyes

  950. on the

  951. right things

  952. it makes

  953. a difference.

  954. You know

  955. Jesus tells

  956. them in

  957. John 13

  958. just before

  959. this he

  960. says this

  961. by this

  962. shall all

  963. men know

  964. that you

  965. are my

  966. disciples

  967. if you

  968. have love

  969. one to

  970. another.

  971. The reality

  972. make a

  973. difference.

  974. You know

  975. sometimes we

  976. look at the

  977. great men

  978. of the

  979. Bible that

  980. stand out

  981. you know

  982. Peter and

  983. Paul and

  984. others that

  985. you read

  986. about.

  987. Have you

  988. ever considered

  989. Andrew?

  990. Peter's

  991. brother.

  992. Single

  993. sermon

  994. recorded by

  995. Andrew.

  996. The Bible

  997. doesn't record

  998. a single

  999. sermon from

  1000. him.

  1001. I'm sure

  1002. he preached

  1003. some.

  1004. He's

  1005. known for

  1006. that when

  1007. he found

  1008. Jesus the

  1009. first thing

  1010. he did

  1011. is he

  1012. went to

  1013. his brother

  1014. Simon and

  1015. brought him

  1016. to Jesus.

  1017. He used

  1018. Simon Peter

  1019. in a mighty

  1020. way.

  1021. It's part

  1022. of Andrew's

  1023. fruit.

  1024. It looks

  1025. like much

  1026. what it

  1027. starts out.

  1028. I want you

  1029. to understand

  1030. the importance

  1031. of this

  1032. that God

  1033. wants to

  1034. look at

  1035. fruit as

  1036. it's

  1037. completed

  1038. not how

  1039. it might

  1040. look today

  1041. because when

  1042. you abide

  1043. in him

  1044. it changes

  1045. the fruit.

  1046. You know

  1047. this morning

  1048. I want to

  1049. encourage you

  1050. if you're

  1051. not saved

  1052. don't leave

  1053. this building

  1054. without knowing

  1055. him.

  1056. For sure

  1057. that of

  1058. who Jesus

  1059. is and

  1060. what he's

  1061. done for

  1062. you that

  1063. I want you

  1064. to understand

  1065. he is

  1066. calling you

  1067. today to

  1068. turn to

  1069. him.

  1070. He tells

  1071. us he says

  1072. whosoever

  1073. will let

  1074. him take

  1075. of the

  1076. water of

  1077. life

  1078. freely.

  1079. He wants

  1080. you to

  1081. come and

  1082. get things

  1083. settled with

  1084. him today.

  1085. He has

  1086. called you

  1087. to say

  1088. I provided

  1089. everything.

  1090. Will you

  1091. accept my

  1092. gift of

  1093. salvation?

  1094. Gift.

  1095. You have to

  1096. do something.

  1097. I'm not

  1098. talking about

  1099. works.

  1100. I'm talking

  1101. about response.

  1102. Recognition.

  1103. to understand

  1104. what he's

  1105. done for

  1106. you.

  1107. If you

  1108. know that

  1109. you're

  1110. saved and

  1111. you've

  1112. just been

  1113. sitting there

  1114. the charge

  1115. is there

  1116. to go

  1117. and to

  1118. bring forth

  1119. fruit.

  1120. I want you

  1121. to understand

  1122. he didn't

  1123. ask you to

  1124. be Peter

  1125. but you

  1126. are asked

  1127. to be an

  1128. Andrew.

  1129. Part.

  1130. Maybe this

  1131. morning I want

  1132. to encourage you

  1133. maybe you need

  1134. to come and

  1135. just pray and

  1136. say God I

  1137. have a

  1138. specific person

  1139. on my

  1140. heart that

  1141. I need to

  1142. pray for.

  1143. Family member,

  1144. co-worker,

  1145. your neighbor,

  1146. your aunt,

  1147. uncle,

  1148. your fifth

  1149. cousin twice

  1150. removed.

  1151. I don't

  1152. care who

  1153. it is.

  1154. They all

  1155. need the

  1156. Savior.

  1157. Maybe it's

  1158. been a rough

  1159. time.

  1160. Maybe it's

  1161. been a time

  1162. where God

  1163. is pruning

  1164. you and

  1165. that God

  1166. prunes to

  1167. prepare for

  1168. fruit.

  1169. God doesn't

  1170. do things

  1171. without the

  1172. foresight of

  1173. saying this

  1174. is what's

  1175. going to

  1176. bring forth

  1177. much fruit.

  1178. And his

  1179. fruit in

  1180. your life

  1181. will remain.

  1182. Don't

  1183. waste what

  1184. God is

  1185. doing in

  1186. your life.

  1187. Come and

  1188. yield to

  1189. what God

  1190. is doing.

  1191. Get connected

  1192. to the

  1193. vine.

  1194. The vine

  1195. has not

  1196. changed and

  1197. the one who

  1198. keeps it,

  1199. the husbandman,

  1200. God the

  1201. father,

  1202. has not

  1203. retired.

  1204. He's still

  1205. doing the

  1206. same thing

  1207. today.

  1208. He did

  1209. when he

  1210. told the

  1211. charge to

  1212. these

  1213. apostles.

  1214. But the

  1215. question is,

  1216. will you

  1217. stay in

  1218. the vine?

  1219. His heads

  1220. are bowed

  1221. and eyes

  1222. are closed

  1223. this morning.

  1224. What about

  1225. you today?

  1226. Do you

  1227. know for

  1228. sure that

  1229. you're

  1230. saved?

  1231. Do you

  1232. know for

  1233. heaven?

  1234. Let me

  1235. ask you a

  1236. question.

  1237. If somebody

  1238. was asking

  1239. you,

  1240. are you

  1241. 100%

  1242. sure you

  1243. would go

  1244. to heaven?

  1245. If your

  1246. response is,

  1247. I hope

  1248. so,

  1249. you've

  1250. missed the

  1251. promise.

  1252. Because

  1253. Jesus says

  1254. that you

  1255. might know

  1256. that you

  1257. have eternal

  1258. life.

  1259. A

  1260. confidence

  1261. in a

  1262. living

  1263. Savior.

  1264. Maybe you

  1265. need to

  1266. call upon

  1267. him.

  1268. Maybe you're

  1269. here this

  1270. morning and

  1271. God has

  1272. spoke to

  1273. you about

  1274. something in

  1275. your life

  1276. that's

  1277. affecting your

  1278. abiding.

  1279. Are you

  1280. going to

  1281. keep it

  1282. there or

  1283. are you

  1284. going to

  1285. deal with

  1286. it?

  1287. Are you

  1288. willing to

  1289. lay it

  1290. before him

  1291. this morning?

  1292. Heavenly

  1293. fathers, we

  1294. come before you

  1295. today.

  1296. Lord, we

  1297. just thank you

  1298. and praise you

  1299. for your

  1300. word.

  1301. Lord, for

  1302. the opportunity

  1303. we have.

  1304. Lord, to

  1305. respond to

  1306. you.

  1307. Lord, this

  1308. invitation, this

  1309. opportunity to

  1310. make a

  1311. difference in

  1312. our own

  1313. lives towards

  1314. you that we

  1315. might be

  1316. connected

  1317. solidly.

  1318. Lord, that

  1319. we might get

  1320. the supply

  1321. that we

  1322. need, not

  1323. from ourselves,

  1324. not from the

  1325. things of the

  1326. world, but

  1327. Lord, from

  1328. you, the

  1329. giver of

  1330. life.

  1331. Lord, I

  1332. pray that you

  1333. just work

  1334. mightily in

  1335. hearts and

  1336. lives today.

  1337. Lord, we

  1338. have an

  1339. opportunity to

  1340. respond to

  1341. you and we

  1342. turn this

  1343. time to you

  1344. in Jesus'

  1345. name.

  1346. Amen.

  1347. His heads

  1348. are bowed

  1349. and eyes

  1350. are

  1351. bowed.
