  1. There are times when the challenge of responsibility will make

  2. you walk away from something that you actually love. And

  3. people will judge you in that moment. And they will

  4. think you're walking away because you're lazy. But you're not

  5. walking away because you're lazy. You're walking away because deep

  6. down inside, I don't know if I have what it takes.

  7. And this is the danger of disengagement. It is when

  8. you find yourself in a state of shame or fear

  9. or trauma or exhaustion and you walk away from what

  10. God gave you because you don't know how to manage it.

  11. It is the danger of disengagement. It is the danger

  12. of showing up in body and not in mind. I've

  13. learned that there's a big difference between coming to church.

  14. And being in church.

  15. I've learned that there is a big difference between coming

  16. home and being home. Y'all ain't gonna say nothing to

  17. me all year. Is that how it's gonna be? You're

  18. gonna look at me crazy all year like that? There

  19. is a big difference between having a child and being

  20. a mom. And sometimes the temptation is not to exactly

  21. run away. but to just disengage. I'm disengaged not because

  22. I don't care, but just because I'm afraid. I don't

  23. know if I have what it takes. David was shaken.

  24. The death of Absalom represented his own failure. If only,

  25. did you hear him? If only I had died instead

  26. of you.

  27. It's my fault. It's my fault. I didn't give you

  28. what you.

  29. Needed and it's my fault you're dead.

  30. And now it's caught up with him and he's shaken.

  31. And he's disengaged.

  32. He's not defeated. He's disengaged. He has the victory, but

  33. he's not acting like it. He's the king, but he's

  34. not where the king is supposed to be. He's lost

  35. his sense of passion because he's moved from his position.

  36. In ancient times, the cities were well guarded by gates. Now,

  37. David is in Mahanaim, which is not Jerusalem, the capital city.

  38. Absalom is there, and he's going to drive him out,

  39. but not yet. The first thing he has to do

  40. is relocate himself. Around the city are two gates. Everybody say,

  41. two gates. Our theme for the new year is gates.

  42. I want you to pay great attention right now. This

  43. is very important. In each city, there would be an

  44. outer gate that everybody saw.

  45. We all have one of those.

  46. We all have the outer gate that people see. It's

  47. our personality that we project into the world so people

  48. won't judge us, so we will appear successful. Then there

  49. is the inner gate. It's the second line of defense.

  50. We all have one of those too.

  51. It's our actions. Two gates. Two gates. Two gates. Two gates.

  52. Two gates.

  53. And the action happens, watch this, between the gates. The

  54. Bible does not say, put my verse up again, it's

  55. my theme verse, that David took his seat, it's verse 8,

  56. at the gate. It says that he got up and

  57. took his seat.

  58. What?

  59. Where?

  60. Now up until this point, he's been near the gate,

  61. but he wasn't in it.

  62. He was in.

  63. Isolation above the gate like a lot of us live

  64. our lives. Watching events unfold but not taking responsibility for

  65. our outcomes. When we live online in an ecosystem of

  66. pretension and narcissism and opinions. but don't really make a

  67. commitment to make a difference in the world. And we

  68. show up in the places that are most convenient to

  69. our ego, but refuse to confront the issues that sabotage

  70. our soul. The action happened between the gates, not outside

  71. and not inside, but often between the gates, transactions would

  72. be made. It was like a marketplace of the day,

  73. but between the gates of the city, there would be

  74. buying and selling and negotiation. Between the gates, prophets like

  75. Amos would prophesy to maintain justice in the gates.

  76. In the gates.

  77. When Ruth, if you.

  78. Remember the Old Testament story, was claimed by Boaz, her

  79. kinsman redeemer, he did the deal in the presence of

  80. ten witnesses in the gate. When Abraham bought the burial

  81. ground for Sarah in the Old Testament, he bought it

  82. in the presence of witnesses in the gate. It's where

  83. the witnesses were. It's where the judges would sit. It's

  84. where negotiations happen. It's where the conscience of the nation

  85. was developed.

  86. It's where Absalom would stand at.

  87. The gate and before people could go through.

  88. Turn them back.

  89. After he had promoted his own agenda.

  90. And everything changed for David when he did something so simple.

  91. The Bible says that after all he had lost and

  92. after all the tears he had cried and after all

  93. the mistakes he had made, He did something so simple

  94. and so profound. The king got up, left his chamber,

  95. and took.

  96. His seat in the gate.

  97. In other words, I hear David saying, like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  98. My heart is broken, but I'm back.

  99. I made some mistakes, but I'm back. I wish I

  100. could go back and change some things, but I can't,

  101. but I'm back. I'm devastated about what happened. I'm uncertain

  102. about the future. I don't know where it's going to

  103. go from here. I'm a long way from home, but

  104. I'm back. Now, what I picture in my mind is

  105. today thousands of people who have gathered to hear this

  106. message online or in person at every location. And I

  107. see you getting up from the failure and the shame

  108. and the regret that has kept you paralyzed and taking

  109. your stand in the gate of praise and entering.

  110. His gates with thanksgiving.

  111. I wish 70 people would jump up on your feet

  112. right now and shout at the top of your lungs,

  113. I'm back.

  114. Let the devil know I'm back. Let condemnation know I'm back.

  115. Let my past know I'm back.

  116. I'm not perfect, but I'm back.

  117. I don't have it planned out yet, but I'm back.

  118. I don't know what.

  119. Tomorrow's going to bring.

  120. But I'm back. High five, everybody.

  121. You can reach.

  122. I'm back.

  123. I'm back in it. I'm back in it.

  124. I'm not going to stand over my life blaming people

  125. for the next 20 years because of the last 20.

  126. Get thee behind me, Satan.

  127. I'm back.

  128. And when the enemy comes with his accusations, and his

  129. excuses i want you to look him square in the

  130. eye before the year even gets started good and tell

  131. him devil this seat is taken i said this seat

  132. is taken no room for you.

  133. To run my life.

  134. Because I am seated. In heavenly places. With Christ. I'm back.

  135. I'm back in position.

  136. I'm back in purpose.

  137. Get back in the gate get back in the gate

  138. you cannot change what you tolerate get back in the

  139. gate you cannot change what you won't face get back

  140. in the game you can't change it by complaining you

  141. can't change it by if only but now if you

  142. will take your seat God has prepared a place for

  143. you in the presence of your enemies.

  144. He might not rid you of your problems, but he

  145. has given you his presence.
