  1. Happy Monday, we're back. Took a week off.

  2. Thanks for bearing with us. But off of confirmation Sunday,

  3. we just thought it was a good time to take a yeah, take a

  4. respite as it was. So we're back in the book of

  5. Acts, though, Chapter 2. You walked us through Peter's

  6. sermon yesterday on just this big sort of first, first

  7. momentous event in the multiplication of the church

  8. here. The we have Pentecost and the

  9. Holy Spirit descends and and then the world thinks they're

  10. crazy, really. You know, it's cool to be at

  11. this point early on in the book of Acts just because you you get

  12. to see Peter and he is just as we all know, the guy who's going

  13. to put his foot in his mouth from time to time.

  14. But man, we see a refinement here, and we see probably a

  15. level of education and speaking coming out of him and biblical

  16. citation that nobody would have thought.

  17. So yeah, it's super fun to be in this text yesterday and to be

  18. able to walk through some of that stuff.

  19. But yeah, here we are. I'm excited to dig a little bit

  20. deeper. Yeah.

  21. And Peter throughout the Gospels, like we have this

  22. picture of Peter just the the brash, kind of impulsive, quick

  23. to that he's not slow to anger. Like don't be too quick to

  24. listen. Like he's he's fast to anger,

  25. always talking, like. And now we have even in the

  26. first couple chapters of Acts, we talked about the choosing of

  27. the 12th apostle, like even however that played out, whether

  28. whether it was what God had drawn up or not, like he was

  29. using Scripture to inform the decision right back in reference

  30. that in chapter 1, he's back here in chapter 2, quoting,

  31. quoting Old Testament, speaking words of Jesus like he's, he's

  32. sourcing himself and the, and the preaching and his teaching

  33. in the proper thing seemingly right.

  34. And we didn't have time to get into all this yesterday, but

  35. Peter has become quite the theologian.

  36. I mean, yeah, he's he's all over the map with his stuff.

  37. And if I can't remember if I said it yesterday or not, but

  38. here in in Acts chapter 2 and and his sermon that he's giving,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  39. it's Joel, it's Psalm 110 and it's Psalm 60 or 16, eight

  40. through 11. And so I mean, like, yeah, this

  41. guy is all over the place. He's citing Scripture.

  42. And even, you know, some scholars will say, wow, he was

  43. the first one to ever interpret that that way.

  44. Speaking specifically about like Psalm 16, eight through 11.

  45. So it's really cool. It's fun and it's an important

  46. model to see we we say it frequently, I think, but even us

  47. on this podcast or or Sunday morning sermons certainly like

  48. they're not they're not our words right where it's it's not

  49. it's not our truth that we're making out of God's word and

  50. Peter's illustrating that here too.

  51. He's saying no, we we believe that these words are divinely

  52. inspired. Yes, penned my penned down by

  53. men, but inspired by the Holy Spirit, inspired by God, the

  54. word of God and we and there's power in that for what it is.

  55. We don't even the power isn't brought out by how eloquently we

  56. we teach or explain it. He's he's proclaiming the truth

  57. of the word and there's power in that, even if it wasn't

  58. unpacked, there's power in it to connect with human minds and,

  59. and to understand even the truth of God's word plainly as it is,

  60. even if it's not thoroughly explained.

  61. He goes further than that and, and explains it and tries to

  62. give him the OK, so this is then what you shall do.

  63. But yeah, so just an, an early illustration of that too.

  64. You know what? We're leaning on the word of God

  65. as we preach and teach, as we proclaim, as we share the

  66. gospel. Yeah, there's part of our

  67. experience in it, too, that the world then thinks you're crazy

  68. for. Thinks, thinks you're drunk on

  69. too much wine for having this spiritual experience and this

  70. indwelling of the Holy Spirit. But beyond that, it's simply the

  71. power of the truth of God's Word, and that's what he's

  72. leaning on here, and that's what we have to lean on moving

  73. forward. To Yeah, it's interesting that

  74. you say it that way. You.

  75. I'm just thinking about this for the first time, so forgive me

  76. because I'm just, I know I might just go off the rails here, but

  77. consider the fact. OK, so going back to the

  78. beginning of this chapter where everybody, as we mentioned,

  79. presupposes they're drunk. Well, I, I actually, I feel like

  80. that's a fairly apartment description of what's happening.

  81. And then even Peter sermon that, you know, again, we're looking

  82. specifically, or we looked at specifically 22 through 39.

  83. But here's the thing for anybody who's ever drank a little bit

  84. too much and then you look back the next day, you're like, I

  85. can't believe I did that. I can't believe I said that.

  86. I can't believe, blah, blah, blah.

  87. And here's the thing, I I almost wonder if Peter and the other

  88. apostles, like they look back, you know, later that night after

  89. he preaches this sermon or the next day and they go, Peter, I

  90. can't believe you said that. Like, where did that come from?

  91. Like that was amazing. And Peter's like, yeah, I can't

  92. believe I said that either. And so I mean, I do think that

  93. like in in the most positive way possible, you know, that

  94. indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it can make us, you know, it can

  95. help us do and say things that like we're like, no way did I

  96. really say that? And I'll be really honest.

  97. And this is not like a please don't hear this as any kind of

  98. bragging, but like, you know, like I do think that God still

  99. really fills people with the Holy Spirit today.

  100. So there are definitely been times I've come off stage and

  101. like the notes were gone, baby, like I and, and I come off and

  102. let's just like, Oh man, I really, I really like that that

  103. you said that. And I said, did I say that?

  104. And she's like, yeah, you did. You didn't.

  105. You don't remember saying that. I was like, I don't know what I

  106. said. Like I just, I just had the very

  107. good sense that what I was saying was very true, but I

  108. couldn't tell you what I said specifically.

  109. Yeah, and I think there's, I think that's a part of it too,

  110. the words. And that's how we know they're

  111. not our words even sometimes like even with what we had

  112. planned to say. I've I've had that too, where I

  113. just in the moment, even looking at the verses that I've been

  114. studying for the sermon all week.

  115. Sometimes when they're on the screen in the sanctuary, another

  116. thought screams through that just I don't, I don't know it

  117. again, it didn't come from me. It was it was gifted to me to

  118. then have to discern whether or not to let that out or not.

  119. But yeah, that's we, we're seeing how the Holy Spirit works

  120. and that that's, that's interesting that the next day

  121. sort of can't believe you said that the Holy Spirit hangover

  122. that was happening amongst the apostles the next the next day

  123. after this, yeah. Holy Spirit hangover, there we

  124. go. So there we go.

  125. Yeah. All right, before we dive deeper

  126. into that, a little levity, we got a lot of feedback and and

  127. reviews for our topic last time on What do you?

  128. Oh my goodness. Conversations flowing

  129. apparently, and people considering the the merits of

  130. time travel or teleportation based on bodily functions.

  131. So we're going to double down on that and come back to that

  132. because we're not, we're not above that here.

  133. We're still, we're still silly men who laugh at funny fart

  134. jokes and things. So yeah.

  135. Or would you rather today is would you rather have to fart

  136. loudly every time you have a serious conversation or have to

  137. burp after every kiss? Oh, no.

  138. Oh, no, Sir. I like before pre show you

  139. initially just put it straight out there like is my so this

  140. question really is for us. Is your wife suffering all of

  141. the time or just never kissing you that that maybe results in

  142. never kissing you If this is the if this is the outcome or are

  143. you just like embarrassing yourself in front of people that

  144. are in like vulnerable, serious needing your help moments?

  145. OK, so let me let me ask a clarifying question here just

  146. for my sake and the audience's sake as you answer this

  147. question. But like, OK, how fast does the

  148. burp happen after the kiss? Is it like OK the second I pull

  149. away? It's soon as you disengage.

  150. It's like, no, like she's not going to be able to avoid that

  151. mess. There's there is breath.

  152. She she's she's breathing your burp.

  153. She she is breathing your burp, unless I mean, I if she's quick

  154. and turns away, maybe, but like I think, oh, she's in your burp

  155. cloud. The other so bad.

  156. The other part of it is terrible.

  157. I feel like serious conversation is a little, I don't know,

  158. undefined like what what merits a serious conversation?

  159. I think we can. I think we.

  160. Can have a decent sense of it, but like if I'm I don't know if

  161. my if my wife and I are planning our budget for the month, is

  162. that a serious conversation like.

  163. Honey, we only have $44.00 till the end of the week.

  164. We can only buy groceries. We're not going out and then

  165. just you drop a bomb of smell everywhere.

  166. But I I mean, like even it doesn't have to be like a

  167. serious graven conversation. Like it's just that's a, it's

  168. not a funny conversation. It's that's a serious kind of

  169. you're planning out your money for the month.

  170. Like is that, is that what's happening?

  171. I feel like it doesn't have to be like crestfallen, terrible

  172. news or anything. Like you're just.

  173. But but now it is terrible news like.

  174. Well, that's worse. Pastor Matt, I came in to tell

  175. you that my dear, sweet grandma who I lived with, she raised me.

  176. She's died, right? And I need you to do the

  177. funeral. What I'm saying, we have like we

  178. have. And then you.

  179. You're even spots. Is just like.

  180. Right. Well, even the other side of

  181. that planning planning I I had funeral in the past couple weeks

  182. and I've also had like wedding planning in the so like both

  183. sides of that also. Is that not a serious

  184. conversation? Planning a wedding talking about

  185. that and I'm I have to let one RIP in the middle of that like

  186. that's. Welcome to your joyous day.

  187. Oh my gosh, I'm I'm like sweating over here.

  188. I can't. My eyes are watering.

  189. I'm sweating. This is too much.

  190. See this This question really was built for people like me.

  191. Right. But it comes, it comes down to

  192. it comes down to the wife thing. Could I know?

  193. Could the wives adapt and do and do we want to put them in that

  194. position of of having to deal with that for the rest of their

  195. lives? The thing is, I feel like.

  196. I feel like if I it's the last show we'll ever do, we'll we'll

  197. both be found. Well, it's only the last one.

  198. If they listen this week, if they listen to it, it's the last

  199. one, right? No, but like, that's OK.

  200. I think if I can just clarify, I think really the heart of the

  201. question is make your wife miserable or you are personally

  202. embarrassed and other people are embarrassed by you.

  203. Which one? Yes, yes, that is.

  204. If we can like get it down to. Its part of the question.

  205. Oh my gosh. Yeah.

  206. The other part of this is how often, how often do you already

  207. just burp after, after you kiss like this?

  208. Like like is. Is this changing a whole lot?

  209. I mean, I don't, I'm not, I'm not chugging, you know, 7UP and

  210. then kissing my wife and then like, you know, that's probably

  211. not happening, but still. And and what?

  212. And what if the roles were reversed?

  213. Like whatever. See, that's maybe even a better

  214. way to do it because now I can like, OK.

  215. How would you feel could we tolerate our wives if if they

  216. had to burp? Just belching on our faces.

  217. I think I could live with it, but I think that's also maybe

  218. how men and women are different. I'm not sure that they could

  219. live with. It Yeah, yeah, You know what,

  220. Thank you for putting it that way, 'cause I think I can

  221. actually answer like, yeah, I don't, you know, I wouldn't want

  222. my wife, you know, ripping every single time she has to have a

  223. serious conversation with somebody.

  224. She would she would never talk again.

  225. So like for her sake and you know, I can, I can, I can take

  226. that, especially if. That's an interesting point,

  227. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, especially if she's like,

  228. you know, and and yes, you brush her teeth, use Listerine,

  229. whatever, try and make it pleasant.

  230. Carried breath mints, I don't care.

  231. So we yes, and I think I would agree, we would take, we would

  232. take it on the chin, yes, for the wives to avoid.

  233. That therefore. If the question was reversed but

  234. I don't OK therefore. Therefore, if they my therefore

  235. is you've, you know, you love me enough to just deal with this

  236. too. You're it's not going to be your

  237. favorite thing unless it becomes your favorite thing.

  238. It should be really weird. That's a whole different weird

  239. scenario. That's your favorite thing.

  240. What I mean there's. A thing for everything.

  241. Counseling with you guys. Pretty soon I'm going to be

  242. farting all the way through it. There's a thing for dude, but I

  243. mean, there's a thing for everything.

  244. There's probably some people who are really into burps.

  245. That's so. Weird, don't you think about?

  246. I mean, isn't there? I mean, come on, if there are

  247. people who are like, Oh my gosh, like I I'd love looking at feet

  248. pictures. That's super strange, like.

  249. Where are we right now? I don't know.

  250. But but there has to be a thing that some people probably like

  251. the sound of burps. Do you think I'm you know what

  252. my search history is about to get weird because I'm going to

  253. look that up right now. Do people like?

  254. Are people attracted to? Burps yeah, yeah, that's what

  255. I'm going to look up right now. What attracted to?

  256. So while you're doing that, though, unpack and we, wow, we,

  257. I didn't think we could spend more time on this than we did

  258. last week, but. What did you find?

  259. Oh no, I've Yep, Yep, it's a real thing.

  260. Oh my, it's 100% a real thing. What, what if?

  261. Oh no, what if my wife is one of those people who's like, doesn't

  262. know and she just doesn't know it yet?

  263. You've never burped in front of your wife.

  264. I mean, yeah, OK. But you've never unpacked as to

  265. whether I've never unpacked if that was like, I've never

  266. unpacked if that was the reason that like she's like so

  267. attracted to me, you know all. Right.

  268. And we've lost the remaining 3 listeners who didn't turn it off

  269. 5 minutes ago and now they're all gone.

  270. All right. OK, OK, so to your point,

  271. though, of like we would, I feel like I would if if sure wife

  272. came to Emily came to me and this was a scenario.

  273. Yes, OK, I would deal with burp kisses the rest of my life to

  274. save you this embarrassment. I'm not sure she would say the

  275. same thing. I'm I'm I think she might be

  276. like, no, you you got to deal with this in your life.

  277. I'm not, I'm not putting up with burp kisses.

  278. You say burp kisses is so dumb you're.

  279. Such a child, Oh my goodness. I can't.

  280. I can't. I'm turning into my mother.

  281. I I laugh, I laugh and I just start crying all.

  282. Right. So I, I actually think, I think

  283. I would have to, I think I would just have to be the farting

  284. pastor like. You're going to be the farting

  285. pastor. I think I would have to do that.

  286. I don't think I could put my wife through it.

  287. OK, Yeah, well, I'm. Sorry congregation, you can go

  288. to Chris for all your serious conversation.

  289. See, and I won't burp in your face.

  290. I'll just burp in my wife's face.

  291. It's fine. So we're split.

  292. It's been a while since we were split on one of these I think,

  293. but. We are split.

  294. Yeah, for, I don't know, I think that's where I got to land so.

  295. That's it. Fart loudly every time you have

  296. a serious conversation, or burp after every kiss.

  297. That's now you know. Now you know where we land on

  298. it. So, you know, and that is so

  299. much more important to know than any political ideologies or

  300. anything else. That's the stuff you really want

  301. to know about your past so. All right, we're going to take a

  302. quick break, let Chris regroup here, and we're going to dunk

  303. back into some more on Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  304. We'll be right back. All right, if you are somehow

  305. still with us after and during that conversation, we're going

  306. to dive back into Acts chapter 2 here.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  307. Peter's sermon after Pentecost here, Chris outlined a lot of

  308. things for us yesterday, but some main things to consider in

  309. your sermon yesterday were God's plans already accounting for

  310. evil? You mentioned it's it.

  311. It's what, It's the material. He has to work with sinful

  312. people, right? Yep, save for Jesus Christ, you

  313. know, we just, we just, I don't know, that's, that's tough

  314. material to work with. You're like, you know, I would

  315. like to do more and I would like to let them help me do more, but

  316. they're just sometimes so bad at this, you know, and, and, and I

  317. wonder, I'm sure God doesn't think that way because we get to

  318. be his children and he loves us dearly.

  319. However, yeah, when you only have flawed material to work

  320. with, you're probably pulling some strings.

  321. And I think the things that we see God do on a daily basis

  322. still, like he's seriously pulling some strings.

  323. It is really not us. It is the work of the Holy

  324. Spirit. It is his moving in and amongst

  325. us that really gets the job done.

  326. Yep, and that's really where he starts here.

  327. We we've mentioned already the the drunkenness with too much

  328. wine, but that's where where you were the passage you were

  329. preaching on yesterday. Peter's explaining like he he's

  330. he's trying to make sense of. Hey, no, they're they weren't,

  331. they weren't drunk. We aren't, we aren't drunk on

  332. wine. We are drunk on the Holy Spirit.

  333. But this is like, this is how it played out and this is the

  334. significance of it. And, and what he says is the the

  335. spirit, the conclusion we get is the spirit empowers people to

  336. prophecy. And what does that's, that's

  337. really Luke's conclusion in describing this.

  338. And what? What is?

  339. What does that encompass? For, yeah.

  340. And actually there's. So there's a scholar, William J

  341. Larkin junior, and he gives this interesting thing that actually

  342. even for me helped create like a better understanding of this

  343. word because I think like prophecy and prophecy like we

  344. get we get certain ideas built around that are like, Oh, I'm

  345. predicting the future and I'm this magical being.

  346. But really he says it like this prophecy for Luke encompasses

  347. spirit filled speaking in other languages.

  348. So speaking in tongues, predictive discourse.

  349. OK, so that's where we kind of get that idea of like, oh, I'm

  350. saying something that's going to happen.

  351. But he also says a proclamatory witness.

  352. Yeah, that's awesome. Because you know what?

  353. That's that's how Peter starts this thing.

  354. He's just proclaiming. He's just witnessing.

  355. And you mentioned it before the show.

  356. You're like, he's just kind of recounting what happened.

  357. You know, he's like, this is what happened.

  358. And I mean, you know. So here's the thing.

  359. I think especially based on what Larkin says, you can go so far

  360. as to say that when a person is speaking about Jesus Christ and

  361. what he's done for us, and you're speaking truth and maybe

  362. even you're speaking a little bit out of your depth and, and,

  363. and outside of your realm of typical courage, man, you better

  364. be aware that the Holy Spirit's working in you right now, right?

  365. And so like I, yeah, I love that he puts those three things in

  366. that that prophecy category. And and it's important that they

  367. are all there together. I don't know that he's listening

  368. them in measures of significance necessarily.

  369. I don't think it's all it's all the same realm of prophecy and

  370. prophesying. And a lot of times that

  371. proclamatory witness, proclamatory proclamation, I

  372. don't know. I don't know why I'm having

  373. such. Trouble.

  374. That's a weird. Proclamation Proclamatory.

  375. Wow, OK, clamatory. I don't know, English is a weird

  376. language anyway, that's I don't know that we often think of that

  377. just simply speaking about God's word or simply speaking God's

  378. word. I don't know that we consider

  379. that prophecy often enough and that the opening words to the

  380. passage you preached on yesterday, Peter, just men of

  381. Israel hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man

  382. attested to you by God with mighty works.

  383. This Jesus delivered up to others in the definite plan and

  384. knowledge of God. You're crucified by the hands of

  385. of lawless men and God raised him up like this is recent

  386. history. This happened like.

  387. Weeks ago, 40 some days prior, yeah.

  388. So this this is something that we would maybe assume they knew,

  389. but Peter didn't assume that. Peter assumed they had to hear

  390. the beginning of the story, the the beginning details.

  391. So even us at times if, if it's if it's neighbors or like, do do

  392. you know what they know about Jesus or, or do you assume that

  393. they well, yeah, they probably know what Easter and Christmas

  394. are about. So like they I don't know.

  395. I, I, I think, I think we maybe gloss over that or, or assume

  396. too much where it, whereas those simple things are still

  397. glorifying to God, they're, they're still edifying to God in

  398. declaring them and proclaiming them to people.

  399. And that's lumped in, in the, in this, in this prophecy, of

  400. course, of course, we, I think we more readily think of

  401. prophecy as like, yeah, predicting the future, telling

  402. of something that's going to happen more the supernatural

  403. ability to to speak in tongues or, or communicate in other

  404. languages. I think we see those two aspects

  405. of prophecy far less. So we maybe think that prophecy

  406. doesn't happen. It is these simple things.

  407. It is these word of God, truth of God things.

  408. And, and Peter's showing us that here.

  409. Yeah. And I, I want to pick up on what

  410. you said just for like, very practical purposes for us

  411. because I did not have a chance to get into this yesterday.

  412. But like, man, you are absolutely right.

  413. Let's stop assuming that people already have a biblical

  414. narrative in their lives. I mean, you know, it's research

  415. already has been telling us for years that we are the most

  416. biblically illiterate generation that has ever existed inside the

  417. United States. That's just a fact.

  418. And so like, man, yeah, if I invite my neighbor or, or

  419. whatever to a Christmas service or an Easter service, I

  420. shouldn't necessarily know, assume that they understand the

  421. Easter or the Christmas story because if they show up to

  422. church on Christmas Eve, because they're like, Oh yeah, it's

  423. Christmas, I should probably go. And it seems like a nice thing

  424. to do, man. They're probably going to hear

  425. something that they didn't realize was real or true, you

  426. know? And so I mean, like, yeah, we we

  427. should not. But it's not that we're not

  428. thinking highly of the people that we're trying to give the

  429. gospel to. They're not unintelligent

  430. because they don't know these things.

  431. They just don't know them. And it's, it's OK to like, start

  432. the way Peter started and just give them, you know, the the

  433. news reel at first. This is what it is.

  434. This is what happened. And we say that as an

  435. imperative. This is it.

  436. Like, it's not opinion, it's not fact.

  437. This is world history. This is it.

  438. And and so out of that he he goes into this invitation to

  439. repent again, repent just doing doing an about face doing this

  440. 180 in your life's orientation, attaching yourself to Jesus,

  441. turning from sin that you have a you have a note from John Stott

  442. here, another New Testament scholar.

  443. Repentance and faith involve each other.

  444. The turn from sin being impossible without the turn to

  445. God and vice versa. We've talked about this report

  446. like sin problem, bad habit, whatever it is, we're going to

  447. replace it with something right. It might be another bad habit.

  448. It might be a different sin or a different bad relationship or a

  449. different thing. This perfect picture of

  450. repentance is is replacing those weights and sins, those things

  451. pulling you away from God and turning true God.

  452. That's what needs to replace those things.

  453. So he's making this call, this appeal to these people and we

  454. see we see at the end there is there is response, there is.

  455. I can't remember if you got to verse 41 yesterday, but the.

  456. No, not quite. Is those who received his word

  457. were baptized and they were added that day about 3000 souls

  458. to their numbers like there is this turning this power within

  459. this and it's why we proclaim the gospel.

  460. It's why it may be redundant for your regular church goes you

  461. probably do hear almost every week that we do layout Jesus

  462. Christ came to die and rose from the grave and defeated sin,

  463. death in the grave. And it's for you.

  464. Well, there are maybe people in our midst that don't hear that.

  465. And those that are in our midst maybe need to be reminded of it

  466. every week too, because that's the that's the crux of this.

  467. That's our everyday, every week battle is turning from sin and

  468. replacing with God turning from sin and replacing with God.

  469. So. Yeah, we should never, we should

  470. never get over the core message of the gospel.

  471. So one of the things again, when I was, when I was a little bit

  472. earlier in my career, I did assume, Oh, and this is super

  473. naive. I actually feel embarrassed

  474. saying it out loud, but I, but I, I did kind of assume like,

  475. Hey, you're in this church. You probably have this life

  476. saving relationship with Jesus. Little did I know that as I

  477. really honestly got to know people like, no, they're there

  478. because that's what you do culturally in that place.

  479. They're there because their spouse makes them.

  480. They're there because it gives them some level of social

  481. influence, you know, and it's just like, Oh my gosh, when I

  482. realized that I, I promised myself there would never be a

  483. Sunday that goes by where I'm preaching where you're not

  484. hearing Jesus Christ crucified, like outright, you know, And so

  485. as one preacher put it like, I need to say essentially the same

  486. thing every week. I just need to think of 10,000

  487. different ways to say it, you know?

  488. And so I just, it's so important.

  489. So, yeah, we should not assume that just because people might

  490. culturally look like Christians because they're upholding a

  491. certain standard of morality or whatever.

  492. Like, no, that doesn't that doesn't mean you have a

  493. relationship with Jesus. And having a relationship with

  494. Jesus means that, man, I am actively repenting day by day

  495. because I'm seeing the ways that I've fallen short.

  496. But I'm also not like down in the dumps because I actively

  497. know that the gospel has saved me, that his blood has been

  498. spilled for me and therefore I am free.

  499. Yeah, and that's the truth that we need to remind ourselves and

  500. and live in from Samuel Davies has this interesting thought on

  501. repentance because there's there's ways that you can talk

  502. about and kind of twist these words from Peter of like

  503. repentance and baptism being necessary, like rituals or or

  504. conditions to go through for salvation.

  505. And and this is where it gets a little weird because.

  506. It does. They're good there.

  507. There are. There are good things there.

  508. There is power in in repentance. In fact, it's necessary to, to

  509. come to faith, repent and be baptized is is declared and we

  510. do believe there's, there's spiritual outpouring power in

  511. the act of baptism. Absolutely.

  512. But Samuel Davies has this thought on, on both these

  513. things. I'm not, I'm, I'm not, I'm just

  514. trying to frame that. So it's not like necessary.

  515. We don't, we don't have things that are legalistic like that

  516. that we must engage with in order to merit salvation.

  517. It's by grace alone through faith alone and Christ alone.

  518. Like that's, that's what it is. The thief on the cross wasn't

  519. baptized and certainly is in heaven.

  520. That's right, we have we have that juxtaposition too.

  521. But anyway, the question that Samuel Davies answers here is

  522. the question is not shall I repent?

  523. For that is beyond a doubt. But the question is, shall I

  524. repent now when it may save me, or shall I put it off to the

  525. eternal world when my repentance will be my punishment?

  526. Whoa. That's a mic drop, man.

  527. I don't, you know. Yeah, I I didn't.

  528. That's the question and urgency that Peter is.

  529. He didn't say those words. Those aren't Peter's words, but

  530. that's basically the message that Peter repent and be

  531. baptized is repent now. The Kingdom of God is at hand

  532. and hell with fire and brimstone is a real thing like so that's

  533. what Davies is putting out is is there this response to this call

  534. to repent and be baptized now in this life, or is it going to be

  535. taken out of your flesh in eternal hell like that and

  536. that's your repentance? That's it's so, so I saw that

  537. before the sermon and I was just like, man, that is so hard

  538. hitting. I just, I don't know.

  539. I mean, I, I know how I could recover as a public speaker from

  540. saying that, you know, like you can recover with the gospel,

  541. like, but that is so heavy. And that's, and it's such a good

  542. quote. And he's right.

  543. He's right. Like we, we have a choice now,

  544. now or later. It's going to happen one way or

  545. another. And so yeah, I just love that

  546. quote. I think it's great.

  547. But like I. But it brings back the necessity

  548. of the gospel, like you were saying that that weekly this

  549. needs to be in there. If I'm, if I'm telling about

  550. God's word and yes, there's law and gospel, but that's how we we

  551. know we need the gospel because of the heaviness of the law,

  552. right? And so that even goes into kind

  553. of your next point that you talked about yesterday in the

  554. sermon having having that weekly commitment to having the gospel

  555. in there. God's plans are multi

  556. generational. You said like, and that's the

  557. trick of it. That's the trick of even this

  558. proclamatory witness of we don't always see the results and fruit

  559. of that, but we're called to be faithful in declaring it because

  560. because as you, as you pointed out, we don't know.

  561. We don't know the ripple effect. We don't know the all the lives

  562. touched necessarily in that moment or down the road or even

  563. in another lifetime that we're not even going to see.

  564. Maybe there's an individual on Sunday who went home to their

  565. kid and they never came back to church here even, but but went

  566. home to their kids and raised their kids up and they moved

  567. somewhere else and went to a church and their kids had kids

  568. who grew up knowing the truth of Jesus Christ.

  569. Like we God's playing the long game even in and beyond your

  570. life. I think you did a good job of,

  571. of like highlighting that yesterday.

  572. But that's, that's the faithfulness to the gospel that

  573. we're called to because if we hold to that, that's the thing

  574. that has power to move and change lives.

  575. It's not us. So we need to be faithful to the

  576. thing that has the power. So good.

  577. I mean, I just, yeah, it's, it's a as you talk about that man.

  578. And even just, it's such a big deal, you know, when I became a

  579. Christian, as I think most of us, when you're early on, you're

  580. just kind of excited about learning new things and you're

  581. like, man, I feel I feel different now.

  582. And that feels really good. But The thing is, as you grow in

  583. faith and maturity and you, as you examine God's Word and you

  584. let that just kind of settle in and help shape who you are, your

  585. priorities tend to change. And I think that's absolutely

  586. been the case for me and other Christians I know.

  587. And so like, you know, coming upon these verses and seeing

  588. God's multi generational plans that, you know, Peter picks up

  589. on through Joel and through David and through himself and

  590. what's going to happen after him.

  591. And it's just like, man, I, I really think that like I would

  592. love to have a life where even in even like, if it's generation

  593. or two later, like it's, it is OK.

  594. It is OK if, if you don't remember my name, because as

  595. long as like, man, the people who I told Jesus about are still

  596. telling people about Jesus, who still tell people about Jesus.

  597. Like, that's amazing. Like that means that my life

  598. really did have an impact on the world.

  599. And I, I think that's so many of what like I didn't get in, I

  600. didn't have time to talk about this yesterday, but I think it's

  601. an interesting illustrative point.

  602. Like athletes, modern day athletes are always talking

  603. about, oh, legacy, legacy, legacy.

  604. And they're all, you know, I'm going to hit, I'm going to have

  605. this many points and people are going to think about me forever.

  606. And it's like, man, that's so selfish.

  607. Like, so you're saying in your life, what really matters to you

  608. is that, you know, if we go on for another 300 years, people

  609. are still saying, oh, well, that guy 300 years ago who we can

  610. watch footage of, like, Yep, he still has the most points.

  611. Whoop Dee Doo dah. Like that's the big deal for

  612. your entire lifespan. Come on, man.

  613. Like, I love, I love sports as much as anybody, but like,

  614. there's got to be more to life than just hitting home runs and

  615. breaking records, right? Like, what about actually

  616. authentically taking someone's life and by the gospel, turning

  617. them in entirely different direction, which turns their

  618. family tree in entirely different direction?

  619. That's important. That's what I want to do.

  620. That's legacy impact. That's, that's what Peter's

  621. going after here too. Is is generations turning around

  622. this this last days sort of thing that is being prophesied

  623. in Joel. There's power that's moving that

  624. is that is hinting at this being the last days in the Kingdom of

  625. God being at hand, being fulfilled in the Holy Spirit and

  626. the promised Holy Spirit here. And and it's all again, just

  627. pointing back screaming about Jesus that the resurrection,

  628. that the power within that, that he has conquered death, which

  629. again is still I don't, I can't get can't quite put myself in

  630. the mindset that they maybe have.

  631. Like, I feel like with the way just technology and life has

  632. evolved, progressed, been made, been made better.

  633. Like I feel like it's more feasible now maybe for us to

  634. like think that someone could be brought back from the dead.

  635. Does that make sense? Like, oh, like I think that I

  636. think that message would have had a lot more gravity then then

  637. it doesn't. It's still a significant thing

  638. off. We haven't brought anyone back

  639. from the dead. And when we do in science

  640. fiction, they're brought back to zombies.

  641. And it's not the same or or or or or a half person of what they

  642. were. It's not it's not the same

  643. thing. Like I think that's I think

  644. that's the right that we generally landed on in science

  645. fiction is like, even if we bring them back, it's not going

  646. to be the person that it was before.

  647. But so either way, I'm not sure why that pops into my head.

  648. I couldn't. I couldn't.

  649. Let that you're letting the intrusive thoughts win.

  650. Normally that's my deal. That is a bad intrusive thought.

  651. But either way, just just the significance of that.

  652. I think we say it so readily now that he conquered sin and death

  653. in the grave, but that was that was a significant that like

  654. that's crazy. Hey, actually pause for a second

  655. because do you think, do you think we only say that because

  656. we are so often times surrounded by Christians?

  657. If you went and said a phrase like that in like the middle of

  658. Chicago or New York City or any other major metropolitan area

  659. where religion has lost its, you know, coolness and like decades

  660. ago. That would be crazy, yeah.

  661. Like I, I think you know what? And maybe we need to reframe our

  662. stuff because as I was listening to you, I was like, I mean,

  663. sure, I hear that all the time, but I'm a pastor who lives and,

  664. you know, who lives amongst mostly Christians because that's

  665. who we hang out with most of the time.

  666. So like, man, maybe we do just need to do Peter's thing and

  667. just be like, you know what? I'm you don't know this and I'm

  668. going to tell you about. It I'm going to tell you all

  669. about it and I'm going to start at the beginning.

  670. So actually, man, that you know what?

  671. But it starts with the crazy that's.

  672. What I'm saying it starts with the.

  673. Crazy. That would have been a wild that

  674. you're right, it still is a wild thing to declare.

  675. But I know it's interesting that he kind of pushes back on them

  676. thinking that he's crazy by saying a very crazy thing.

  677. So yeah. Yeah, or at least just if not

  678. crazy, of course, because so many of them witnessed it.

  679. Just remarkably difficult to wrap your head around.

  680. But it's also interesting, as much as things change, they also

  681. stay the same. He's speaking to in the rest of

  682. this passage, a corrupt generation that is heading for

  683. disaster. Well, we still have that right.

  684. Like we still, we still feel that in in society that we have

  685. a every generation since then, right?

  686. Has still been corrupt, right? It's still just heading the

  687. wrong way, still needs repentance, replacing the bad

  688. things with God. And yeah, so this invitation

  689. from Peter is, is again, just because of the resurrection,

  690. because of the significance, the craziness that he was able to to

  691. overcome death. This is why, and you repent and

  692. be baptized and enter into this power, You enter into this,

  693. 'cause this is now an identity that you are, I mean, you are a

  694. Christian, right? You are now a follower of

  695. Christ, follower of the crazy guy who conquered death and the

  696. grave. And you're embracing Jesus's way

  697. instead casting away the way of the world and embracing Jesus's

  698. way. Yep.

  699. And we, you know, guys, we're not going to do that perfectly.

  700. It's it's not going to work out that way.

  701. But as we faithfully in repentance and through the Holy

  702. Spirit walk with Jesus day in and day out, you are going to

  703. see changes in your life. You know, sometimes you're

  704. probably going to see some people, some new people come in

  705. and you're going to see others probably walk away if you really

  706. stick to this message of the Gospel.

  707. But ultimately, again, like we know that God is in control.

  708. He's even in control of the evil things that happen, as we

  709. clearly learn here in the tension of this text.

  710. But like God's, God's got you. And so I mean, I, I hope that

  711. like coming out of yesterday and even listening today and maybe

  712. other Christian things, you're listening to a reading.

  713. I hope you do want to live like a different life.

  714. I hope you know you want to live kind of a multiplying life where

  715. it's not about you and it's not even necessarily about the next

  716. generation down. It's still thinking very, very

  717. big picture of the way that God thinks because then man, we, we

  718. are potentially capable of doing something really remarkable.

  719. Going back to this this death thing, because Peter also harps

  720. on this. Remember, we're talking about

  721. the word and the Old Testament of the things that he's was

  722. declaring and recounting and and telling them that maybe some of

  723. them had heard in in scriptures or or had this record of the Old

  724. Testament, but David would have still been like major

  725. figurehead. Oh, absolutely.

  726. These people's minds and he goes on and in verses 25 to 2829 to

  727. kind of declare, OK, and this is different.

  728. David died. David is in fact still dead and

  729. this man Jesus is not he's he's set himself apart.

  730. And in fact these words in Psalm 16, which maybe you're familiar

  731. with church or or early Christians, people who don't

  732. know Christ yet. David wasn't in fact talking

  733. about himself. He was talking about the one

  734. that would come, the one that it did come and has risen from the

  735. dead. And so if if you have David, if

  736. you're a person here today who has David on this high pedestal,

  737. well, this Jesus is the greater than it is, is the more than.

  738. So whatever you think about David, readjust your opinion.

  739. And this Jesus guy, he's the one you actually want to go after.

  740. Yeah, it's it's so cool to watch this warrior king, Prophet David

  741. is all of the above. It's interesting to watch him

  742. look at his own life and then continue to look forward and

  743. say, wow, the Lord said to my Lord, by the way, that's Psalm

  744. 110 one, and that's not 25. That's, you know, the other spot

  745. in Acts where he's quoting. But but anyway, yeah, his use of

  746. David's life and how David perceives the coming Messiah and

  747. that David can clearly see that man, this life that I'm living,

  748. although it is great in a lot of ways, and God has given me a ton

  749. of responsibility and he's put me over this nation.

  750. Yeah, there's still one bigger and better and more important

  751. because he will save us from there.

  752. Like there's, there's someone bigger coming.

  753. And I get to be a part of that. Like I get to be in that line

  754. because God's God has promised me I'm in that line.

  755. But like, he's still my Lord, and he's coming.

  756. Yeah. So we have just kind of the rest

  757. of that's in Acts chapter 2, verses 34 and 35 that you're

    Acts 2:34

  758. talking about there. But Peter is referencing these

  759. familiar words of David, Psalm 16 and Psalm 110.

  760. Just just pointing out he's not talking about it.

  761. Even David, this guy that you have highly exalted and think

  762. well of, he wasn't talking about himself.

  763. He was talking about the one that is to come and now has

  764. come. And I'm here to tell you this is

  765. what happened and and we see the results of that there there was

  766. just by simple proclamation, proclamatory witness that Peter

  767. at this point is not speaking in tongues.

  768. He is not foretelling of of future.

  769. He's just spitting truth balls right like and and this is the

  770. response we see 3000 added to their numbered that were that

  771. were saved that day. It's cool.

  772. It's it's an awesome result. And and this is kind of what we

  773. were talking about last time, though, the wondering if they

  774. acted out of turn. They were told to wait for the

  775. promised Holy Spirit and they were like, OK, but we got a

  776. roster spot to fill. So we got it.

  777. We got to get the 12th guy in here and what that is may have

  778. been fine. They weren't moving with the

  779. spirit at that point. Now the Spirit is poured out,

  780. Peter's inspired, filled with the truth of God's Word.

  781. And oh, my goodness, the Spirit moves right like this.

  782. This is the this kind of supercharged Holy Spirit that

  783. that we've been talking about for the past couple weeks.

  784. This is the result because of Peter's faithfulness, because of

  785. the the prophecy contained within these words, even in his

  786. proclamatory witness here of the truth of God.

  787. And this is the result. God's glorified lives are

  788. changed, eternal, like generations are changed at this

  789. point, right? Because.

  790. Yeah, 3000, that's like. Oh my gosh.

  791. There were probably weren't even 300 Christians at at this point.

  792. Maybe. I think, I think earlier we get

  793. that there's about 120 Jesus followers who are sticking

  794. around after he ascends or after he dies, but we go from 120 to

  795. like around 3000. We're talking 2030 times in a

  796. day. And then just again, we talked

  797. about this yesterday, but imagine just do the multi, just

  798. do the math, do the multiplying. Those 3000 people went home,

  799. told their families, raise their kids this way.

  800. Those then went and you know, again, like we said yesterday,

  801. do the math, it exponentially multiplies.

  802. And here we are 2000 years later and there's billions of people

  803. who have been saved. Why?

  804. Because through God's Holy Spirit, Peter speaks up and

  805. changes the world and others do the same thing inside that first

  806. generation of Christianity. And here we are.

  807. It's so crazy. Think about it.

  808. You know what? I don't think we think about

  809. this enough, but it's really cool.

  810. There's this game called like is I'm going to go off the rails A.

  811. Little bit. Oh boy.

  812. There's this game called 7° of Kevin Bacon, right, Right.

  813. You know the game. Well, for those who don't, it's

  814. it's pretty, it's pretty quick to explain.

  815. Basically, can I get to Kevin Bacon through seven different

  816. people? I know that he might know, that

  817. we might mutually know. And the idea is that everybody

  818. knows Kevin Bacon within 7°. Well, you know what's really

  819. cool though? And I know it's been 2000 years,

  820. but like man, we have a Direct Line to Peter and the apostles

  821. as we proclaim the name of Jesus Christ, as we believe.

  822. Think about it. There's somebody a generation

  823. before us who believed and spoke truth and before them and before

  824. them and before them. And you can walk it all the way

  825. back to Peter in this day. If you believe in Jesus Christ

  826. today, walk yourself right back to Pentecost because you got to

  827. be there. That day affected you today, and

  828. that's a cool thing to think about.

  829. Yeah, that's awesome. That's and that's where we're

  830. going to leave it today. So it's yeah, you recovered well

  831. from the from the earlier. I just needed a moment.

  832. I was sweaty. It was weird.

  833. So no church be encouraged in that the the generations that

  834. have come before you and have passed down, even if it wasn't

  835. in your family directly, there was someone before you that

  836. proclaimed truth and spoke truth into your life.

  837. And here you are on this multi generational plan ready to

  838. ripple effect and and have impact on eternity for

  839. generations to come. You're filled with the same

  840. spirit that that's the power of the spirit that does the

  841. changing. We just have to be faithful to

  842. the word of God in it. So be encouraged in that today.

  843. Thanks for hanging out with us. We'll be back next week with

  844. some more leftovers. See you.
