  1. Here we go. Here we go. 1212 Yep, happy

  2. Monday. Take 2A little with a little

  3. extra on the intro because I forgot to arm a microphone.

  4. That's my bad. It's fine.

  5. You'll never know He was, Yeah, 10 seconds in, started over.

  6. Pastor Matt's here with you on the ERC Leftovers.

  7. Pastor Chris, wow, question. Yes, no, that's who I am.

  8. That is who I am. And I will, I, I like saying it

  9. that way. And if I stop saying it that

  10. way, then man, our listeners would be so sad.

  11. They'd be like why is Chris being so normal when he says his

  12. name? I really, really drew it out.

  13. Really drew it out. Added the question mark on the

  14. end I. Can't go back now.

  15. I've gone too far. I've done this too many weeks.

  16. I would have to apologize for all of the former weeks if I

  17. went backwards and I don't want to do that.

  18. You shouldn't have to, and I know you're not going to, so I'm

  19. not even not even going to ask you to do that.

  20. Oh, man. But Speaking of things that make

  21. me laugh, that you do. Come on.

  22. Yes. Just another glimpse behind the

  23. curtain here a little bit. It was only, it was only for the

  24. first service, but I had brought up a few weeks ago, we, we

  25. haven't always done this and we, it's not nearly a habit.

  26. Haven't done it for a long time. I just every once in a while I

  27. try to make sure that I know what page the, the scripture

  28. passage for the messages and the in the Bibles that we have in

  29. the sanctuary under the seats. And I got some feedback from a

  30. few of that like that use those Bibles that like, that's really

  31. helpful for me to just like, boom, count out the pages.

  32. I know, I know where it is. I know where I'm going.

  33. So I brought that up to you that hey, doesn't have to be every

  34. week, but maybe a little more regularly.

  35. We can be like, Hey, this is this is where we're at.

  36. Helpful for a series like Roman. We're in Romans 8.

  37. We're literally on the same like page now.

  38. Now you know what page we're on and then we're on that.

  39. We're on that page for weeks. But I wasn't I, I had the

  40. feeling that you probably didn't have that ready to go in, in the

  41. first service. So I quick, I get down from the

  42. worship set and you're doing your intro.

  43. Haven't gotten to the reading yet.

  44. And I quick looked it up in the in the front, in the front row.

  45. And I texted the guys back in the booth of like put a message

  46. up there for Chris that the Bible number is is page 944.

  47. So they put it up there and you're still, you're still doing

  48. your like opening monologue, setting it up, setting the

  49. context and everything. JT was actually back there like

  50. under the TV, like pointing up at it, trying to get your

  51. attention. And I look back and was like, I

  52. was like, stop it because I know you're poker face.

  53. Like if you see JT dancing around back there, like all hope

  54. is lost. All hope was still lost because

  55. you still just saw the message. And like, we got to make some

  56. sort of rule that like any, anything on the screen, like

  57. stays in your brain. It's not.

  58. It's not a message broadcast for the whole room.

  59. It's so difficult for me, I don't even know why, it just is.

  60. It just broke the 4th wall just so hard.

  61. I just. You know, Dang it, I don't know

  62. how to do that very well. It was an endearing moment.

  63. I feel like everyone like, yeah, it was.

  64. It was funny. I, well, you know, I, I, I

  65. suppose, if nothing else, when, when I am on stage on it on any

  66. given Sunday, you are getting the real me.

  67. It's true. Like, they're very true.

  68. I'm not putting on a show, that's just who I am.

  69. There's no doubt of that, yeah. So there you go.

  70. You never have to question if the guy on stage is who he is

  71. off the stage because yeah, I just flaws and all, there I am.

  72. And what's even better, I didn't, I didn't cut that out of

  73. the that's that's in you. You wanted the first service.

  74. You wanted the first service to be posted on Spotify for your

  75. message. So that little snafu is in there

  76. because I don't usually nitpick those little edits.

  77. It's it's fine. It'll be.

  78. That's OK now. So fun fact, I don't, it's

  79. unusual for me to go back into like listen to my own sermons

  80. because I know it right now, I'm going to go back and listen to

  81. at least the first couple minutes.

  82. Here how that came out. Yeah, yeah, OK.

  83. Spoilers. There's a little little

  84. something in the a message from this week.

  85. If you haven't listened to that or didn't catch the first

  86. service, ah. Speaking of spoilers.

  87. Spoilers. I have, I have a question for

  88. you, OK. And this is a question that I

  89. think is really important because it's about social

  90. etiquette. It is.

  91. It's really important social etiquette question in our

  92. current day society. And the question kind of goes

  93. like this. How long does a person have to

  94. wait before they openly talk about the endings of movies and

  95. TV shows like a mixed company? How long should you wait?

  96. Wow. And so in books we're talking

  97. about, we're talking about spoilers, endings of stories.

  98. Yeah, endings of stories, books, movies, TV shows.

  99. Like, how long do I have to wait until I just like, run my mouth

  100. about so and so did this at the end and Oh my gosh, Can you

  101. believe that twist? Well, I the the baseline, the

  102. first thing that comes to my mind, and it's a little weird

  103. because now we have, we kind of have like bingeable series.

  104. It's funny how like shows have evolved.

  105. You used to have to tune in like every before streaming.

  106. Obviously you tuned in every Wednesday night at this time to

  107. catch the show. And if you missed it, you better

  108. pop your tape in the in the VCR tape recorder and, and have

  109. yeah. Anyway, how far we've come now

  110. you can bang next season of this show is out on Netflix and you

  111. can just knock out 12 episodes in a day if you want, like.

  112. I've done that before. So that's a little bit because

  113. it used to be even in the not so.

  114. And I'm not saying it it I'm just bringing this up because it

  115. was a very followable series societally.

  116. Like Game of Thrones was huge. Like the world stopped.

  117. I think it was Sunday night's game of Game of Thrones came out

  118. and and Twitter social media was was just a Twitter with with,

  119. with comments and every so like you knew there were these groups

  120. of people just like following what was what was happening.

  121. We're very far removed from that, right?

  122. Like we have no real perception other than maybe like movie

  123. releases. I know season 5 of stranger

  124. things that just came out like that was a big the conclusion of

  125. this, that there was a little more of a following.

  126. So I think we still have glimpses of that, but like take

  127. a take your house MD, the medical drama that was probably

  128. 20 years old by 15, at least that it that it ended.

  129. Even if you've never seen it before, you even you watching it

  130. for the first time, like there's probably a good portion of

  131. people that you know that maybe have seen it before, but there's

  132. also an equal portion who probably haven't.

  133. But it's like, how do you distinguish what people have or

  134. haven't seen? I don't know, mind.

  135. And all that is to say my initial thought is however many

  136. seasons the show is, it must be at least that far away from the

  137. final season. So, So Stranger Things, it's

  138. five seasons, right? Season 5 just ended.

  139. You have five years from right now, 2031.

  140. You can talk freely about everything that happened in

  141. Stranger Things. Wow.

  142. That's not really based on anything.

  143. That's just I just I just made that up because I think there's

  144. also a few other parameters obviously OK to Star Wars.

  145. You can't you. Oh man.

  146. OK, and now. Star Wars.

  147. That's, I don't even know, just be.

  148. Careful say, I don't want to say the spoilers that I was going to

  149. say, but like you can't give away the spoilers in Star Wars

  150. to like a 5 year old, right? Like no, like no matter how far

  151. away it is from Star Wars, you can't.

  152. The five year old has not had enough time.

  153. True. Understand the ramifications and

  154. the conclusion of Star Wars, right.

  155. So there's a little bit of age if we're limiting it to like

  156. peer-to-peer adults or even like, I don't know ±10 years of

  157. yourself, something like that, 'cause even, I don't know, even

  158. some of our high school students that are like more like 20 years

  159. younger than me, 30 years younger than you.

  160. That's a long time. Like I wouldn't, I wouldn't

  161. necessarily expect them to have seen scrubs, let's say like I.

  162. I really enjoyed Scrubs there's. No way that a 16 year old

  163. nowadays has watched all those scrubs.

  164. No, nor should, but like, but like, I wouldn't, I wouldn't

  165. just drop that on the the conclusion of that on a

  166. teenager. I wouldn't expect them to have

  167. taken interest in it and known it.

  168. So I think you have to you have to be mindful of the age thing

  169. too. But let's just keep it to like

  170. peer adults. What's your time frame?

  171. Yeah, So I don't know if I have a specific time frame, but

  172. because of the way society and culture has evolved with its

  173. entertainment, I have become very aware of, OK, have you seen

  174. this show? OK, if the answer is no, now

  175. I've got a couple paths to work with here I can say I can kind

  176. of describe the show. And if they're like, oh, that

  177. sounds cool, then I'll say OK, then I'm not going to tell you

  178. anything else. But if they're like, Oh yeah, I

  179. don't know, I'm never going to watch that.

  180. But they're still mildly interested in the conversation,

  181. then I'll probably tell them the big review or whatever that

  182. might be because yeah, I'm never going to watch that.

  183. And I've done that with people because they're like, oh, did

  184. you watch blah, blah, blah. And I'm like, no, but I don't

  185. know. I probably wouldn't.

  186. What's it about? How's it end?

  187. And I'll just ask. I'm just like, just tell me,

  188. Just tell me the thing. So for example, Stranger Things,

  189. you brought it up. I, I watched like the first part

  190. of Season 5 and then I'd heard enough about the second set that

  191. they released that I was like, no, I'm not going to watch that.

  192. And then when the third set came out, my son had kind of said,

  193. and he was a big Stranger Things fan and he's like dad, that was,

  194. that was pretty underwhelming. I didn't, I didn't really like

  195. the ending. And so him and I are enough

  196. alike that I'm like, man, if you didn't really like it, I

  197. probably wouldn't love it either.

  198. So just tell me He's like, no. And I was like, he didn't want,

  199. he didn't want to. He's like, no, I can't.

  200. You got to watch it. I was like, but you just said it

  201. wasn't very good. He's like, I know, but you

  202. should still watch it. And I'm like, dude, I'm not

  203. going to, I won't do it. And so I was like, just tell me.

  204. And so like it, it was. It was.

  205. Difficult. He did.

  206. OK, if he hadn't, would you have like gone on Reddit and I just.

  207. Would have looked it up. Yeah, I'm not going to.

  208. I don't know. I'm not going to watch.

  209. It I kind of respect a little bit his responsibility.

  210. If you care enough about it, you'll watch it.

  211. Like, yeah. No, and even though it's not

  212. very. Good if you want to know like

  213. you'll watch it. Yeah, no.

  214. So I, I appreciated his like, his demeanor in that moment of

  215. saying, oh, no, no, come on, man, don't, don't, don't tell me

  216. to tell you. And I'm like, no, just tell me.

  217. So I think, I think because he's grown up only in the era of

  218. streaming and all that kind of stuff that he's hypersensitive

  219. to it. Yeah, whereas, like, people my

  220. age in their 40s were just like, well, like you described.

  221. We used to watch. There's a show on Wednesday

  222. night, TuneIn on Wednesday. Figure it out.

  223. And I guess with the movies, I feel like it's a little

  224. different. Obviously there's not like the

  225. season timeline that I, that I yeah, threw out there as, as

  226. kind of a this show was five years long.

  227. So you have 5 years from the end of that to give out spoilers

  228. like like for someone RA someone between 35 and 45 years old.

  229. If I was talking to someone and actually there's close friends

  230. of mine who go to this church that I do not care about Star

  231. Wars, then it's I always forget that when I I bring up Star Wars

  232. things and they don't, they just don't know my.

  233. Wife is one of those she just. But so that's I would not feel

  234. even if she's I would not feel bad about Star Wars spoilers for

  235. someone my age. I, I, I just, I wouldn't.

  236. If you have, if you've made it into your 4th decade of life and

  237. haven't seen that, I don't. There's no feeling of ruining

  238. that for you for sure. I guess sure.

  239. Yeah, that's. Fair, Yeah, Something that like

  240. there was there was something a few years back when Avengers end

  241. game came out, came out, there was there was a running back

  242. with Sean McCoy in the NFL. He went and he went to like the

  243. first showing on the East Coast of the thing and tweeted out

  244. like tweeted spoiler to his millions of followers.

  245. Like he he tweeted plot lines. Yeah, like you can't do that on

  246. opening that, no. I I would write that guy hate

  247. mail. Yeah, if I was sure.

  248. Oh my. God, yeah, he got a lot of

  249. ridicule for that. But like, that's, yeah, that's

  250. crazy. Oh man, so by the way, Speaking

  251. of all this, This is why movies that I really care about or

  252. shows that I really care about. You see, first thing I.

  253. I mean, so like for example, the you brought up Avengers, the the

  254. next Avengers big, big movie Doomsday.

  255. It's in my calendar. I am going on the Thursday it

  256. releases because I am so afraid of hearing something that I want

  257. to hear. Like I'm the kind of person,

  258. like if I know I want to go see a movie, I don't even want to

  259. watch the previews because previews are getting longer and

  260. longer. They're 2 1/2, three minutes

  261. long now. And it's like you already showed

  262. me all of the best parts, like, you know, so I I don't even

  263. watch previews for movies I want to see.

  264. So what do you do? What do you do with?

  265. So like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, there are epic

  266. book series of these stories. And I guess, yeah.

  267. So maybe it doesn't exactly apply because at the time there

  268. are some people who had never read a page of either of those.

  269. And we're just going to see the movies and that's how they

  270. follow the story. But there's another hand of

  271. people who have read all the books.

  272. They know how it ends even though they haven't seen the

  273. movies. What do you do with those

  274. spoilers? But because you could like the

  275. the rest of the story is available to you to go read, but

  276. not so like someone going into Return of the King who hasn't

  277. read the books. What what he as a person who has

  278. read the books, am I under the same like spoilers scrutiny,

  279. scrutiny there? Or is this hey, you could have

  280. you could have finished the story.

  281. I'm going to talk freely about this.

  282. That's a great question. I don't know what the answer is.

  283. Wow. For you bookworms out there,

  284. like I feel, I feel like if you've done the work to read the

  285. book. Well, you.

  286. Get a, you get a pass. Yeah.

  287. I mean, come on. Yeah, I'm with you on that.

  288. I'm totally with you on that. What's also funny to me, just

  289. cause. And actually maybe you can shed

  290. some light on this. I feel like we give away

  291. spoilers every week at church like.

  292. OK. I don't, I can't.

  293. I would like to meet someone who who actually like read the story

  294. of Jesus and didn't know how it ended right.

  295. Like, like we, we give away the end, but like give someone the

  296. gospel of John who doesn't doesn't know, like how does that

  297. because we give away spoilers every week.

  298. Like we give away how it ends every week, right?

  299. And then we kind of backtrack and talk about why it was

  300. necessary for it to end that way or why it's great that it ended

  301. that way and all the other stuff.

  302. So. Wow, I don't know.

  303. I have never thought about it that way.

  304. I'm just saying every week we're giving spoilers, we're giving

  305. Jesus spoilers. Wow, but.

  306. And I'm not saying, I'm not saying it's essential, you don't

  307. have to read it chronologically like that, but I just, I don't

  308. know, in the spoiler discussion, that was an interesting part in

  309. my head. That's intriguing.

  310. You know what, now that I think about it, this is kind of funny.

  311. So I'm I'm very like I'm very well pointed in like how I

  312. produce like a sermon. So like every week I'll tell you

  313. like, we're going here here, and then this is how we're ending.

  314. So like there's no real not, I don't know if there needs to be,

  315. but there's no real mystery in terms of like even my.

  316. Sermon is. Yeah.

  317. So like if you were in church yesterday, you, you know, that

  318. we were going to end with freedom in Christ.

  319. And I don't know if that, I don't know if that was better.

  320. I don't know if that's better or worse for people.

  321. I I have no idea. I guess I haven't thought about

  322. it from that, from that angle. We're open to full blown

  323. critiques any anytime, anytime in person in the comments.

  324. That's what we're here for. Well, and actually, you know, in

  325. seminary, or at least our seminary for sure, there's at

  326. least two different kinds of sermon delivery styles that you

  327. would learn about. 1 is in our like deductive, right?

  328. And the other one is what? Inductive and one is more so

  329. like I'm going to tell you where we're going.

  330. The other one is like, join me for the ride and let's see.

  331. Where we're going to go to where we're going, Yeah.

  332. So, yeah, OK, OK, that's interesting.

  333. I. Don't know, I just.

  334. Yeah. I've never met anyone who like

  335. sees it that way. Like you gave away the end, bro.

  336. After you like like you told me, you came.

  337. Back from the dead. Right.

  338. I've never, like, experienced that sort of spoiler outrage.

  339. Yeah, so that'd be weird. I know, but like that's the one

  340. time it's acceptable apparently. Apparently 2000 years.

  341. That's the barometer dude. If it's if it happened 2000

  342. years ago, spoilers. Were free 2000 years.

  343. That's the line friends. Now you know.

  344. There it is. Glad we came to that conclusion.

  345. Yikes. All right, well, if you caught

  346. the message yesterday or if you missed the message yesterday, we

  347. are in Romans 8 all the way up and through Easter.

  348. We're concluding the series on April 5th, Easter.

  349. We have a couple things that Holy Week as well we're going to

  350. have. So the Thursday before Easter,

  351. we're going to have the Hillcrest Choir, which if you

  352. don't know. So we're part of the Church of

  353. Lutheran Brethren and that is a Lutheran Brethren High School

  354. that is in Fergus Falls, MN, kind of where our synodical

  355. headquarters are. And they do a spring choir tour

  356. with their, with their high school choir and we're gonna

  357. host them on Maundy Thursday of, of Holy Week.

  358. I believe that's the first, the 2nd, April 2nd.

  359. And then we do have a Good Friday service as well that

  360. Friday evening. So Thursday, Friday and then

  361. Easter Sunday morning we'll have a service at usual times of 9:00

  362. and 10:45 on Easter Sunday, So only 9 Sundays away.

  363. Oh. It's very close to now.

  364. So, so a little plug for the Hillcrest Choir, that is they do

  365. a phenomenal job. They are extremely talented and

  366. and very well rehearsed. And so if that's something that

  367. you're even kind of interested in, invite your friends because

  368. that's wide open to our community for anybody to come.

  369. And we would love for you to pack out ERC to support the

  370. kiddos and just hear some really amazing music.

  371. Yeah, very, very well done. Not your average high school

  372. choir. They they do very well.

  373. And you're actually you're hearing that first here.

  374. We haven't announced that anywhere else.

  375. I think so hey, podcast listeners, you get a little

  376. inside scoop on stuff. So yeah, spread the word.

  377. We are in Romans 8 and you backtracked a little bit to

  378. Romans 7 because it is it is important what the therefore is

  379. therefore none. Well, you said that the.

  380. Therefore is there. Did I say that the Therefore is

  381. there for? I thought you said that

  382. yesterday that we we have to see what the therefore is there for

  383. probably I. Probably.

  384. I don't know. I probably would have giggled

  385. that I said it, because that struck me as funny.

  386. OK, maybe you didn't. That's how I've always said that

  387. when it wherever, whenever there's a there for, you have to

  388. see what the there for is there for.

  389. That was Debian confirmation class.

  390. That was. That was from him.

  391. That stuck with me for 30 years. Anyway, because and it's just

  392. with the therefore obviously none of the books of the Bible

  393. start with therefore, like that's that's not the first word

  394. in any of the books of the Bible.

  395. There there therefore is declaratory based on what I just

  396. said, right. So it's not, it's not a starter,

  397. it's a it's a middle transition statement.

  398. So we have to see why it's there.

  399. You backtrack to verse 21 and Chapter 7.

  400. I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies

  401. close at hand. For I delight in the law of God

  402. and my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging

  403. war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law

  404. of sin that dwells in my members.

  405. Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of

  406. death? Thanks be to God through Jesus

  407. Christ our Lord. So then, I myself serve the law

  408. of God with my mind, With my flesh, I serve the law of sin.

  409. Wow. I, you know, I was just looking

  410. and there's this, there's this cool little thing that it's on

  411. the David Guzik Enduring word and anybody can access that.

  412. It's just on the Internet. It's free to everybody.

  413. And there's a couple of different people that he quotes

  414. within these verses. And CS Lewis said this, anyone

  415. who has tried to do good is aware of this struggle.

  416. We never know how hard it is to stop sinning until we try quote.

  417. No man knows how bad he is until he has to try to be good.

  418. And the tension of that is so it's like palpable.

  419. You can feel it, you know, and, and so I mean, in our life group

  420. last night, we end up having a longer conversation about this

  421. very thing of, you know, I, I know the right thing to do.

  422. I, I know it like I'm, it's, it's obvious to me.

  423. And yet somehow, somehow there is this kind of quiet ish desire

  424. or want to just not do that thing.

  425. And in fact, probably to do the exact opposite.

  426. And what, what an incredible battle that is for all of us.

  427. I think I hopefully it's a battle.

  428. Hopefully it's not just, well, I'll just do the wrong thing

  429. because that's what I feel like. Right.

  430. And I thought you keyed in on that really well yesterday that

  431. I mean, the words are there that this is a war against the law of

  432. my mind, my my bodily members warring against the law of my

  433. mind. So we are in this conflict, this

  434. battle that that word captive to the law of sin you described as

  435. as kind of prisoner of war is really more of what it is

  436. because we have this, we have this conflict.

  437. So yeah, there's it. It feels a little unnatural to

  438. to say that. And, and Paul writes that in

  439. other places too, Like why do I continue to do what I do not

  440. want to do? I know I know what's right and I

  441. know what's wrong and I continue to do the wrong thing.

  442. You keyed in on the the the point there of it should feel

  443. like a war, like it there should be conviction of even when

  444. you're drawn into sin. The scariest place to be would

  445. where would be where there's no longer conviction in that action

  446. where we're sin feels normal or or unremorseful, right?

  447. Normalizing sin is so dangerous. And I think we, I think it's

  448. easy to do that, not because we don't love God, but because if

  449. it is normalized in the entire culture around me, then I have

  450. to be the big weirdo who's like, no, that's not what I'm doing.

  451. So, you know, for example, there could be a movie or TV show, you

  452. know, you brought up Game of Thrones.

  453. So it could be a movie or TV show that seemingly the world is

  454. kind of going after. And I'll just speak personally,

  455. my wife and I, we watched, I don't even think we made it

  456. through the first episode. And we're like, Nah, this isn't

  457. for us. And then for the next several

  458. years, I had to listen to people go, Oh my gosh, that was all,

  459. dude, did you see that? And I, I did have this weird

  460. nagging feeling of being left out.

  461. But at the same time, my wife and I had together decided this

  462. is not it for us. And so I had to stick to my guns

  463. on that also while feeling left out, you know?

  464. And so I think like the normalization of sin within our

  465. society can make Christians feel left out when we don't normalize

  466. what the rest of the culture is doing.

  467. And that is another war, you know, of sorts that we have to

  468. deal with. And not to make light of it the,

  469. the, the FOMO fear of missing out that you're talking about

  470. there. But I mean, again, if we turn to

  471. scripture, Lord did not give us a spirit of fear, but a bit of

  472. life and a freedom, right? So like FOMO should not be

  473. governing your choices right there.

  474. There's probably very little redeeming qualities and

  475. something that you're feeling a fear of missing out for.

  476. That's not the reason you should engage in that.

  477. There might be redeemable reasons for whatever there there

  478. might be. Hey, hey, you do you have a fear

  479. of missing out on life group? Sure, you should like you should

  480. you should act on that and you should jump into community.

  481. That's that's a that's a holy fear.

  482. But yeah, with those pair that with the do not let your mind

  483. conform any longer to the pattern of this world.

  484. Are are you fearing missing out the patterns of this world?

  485. You should probably should probably let that be.

  486. You should probably be OK with missing out on that.

  487. So well and interesting that you bring up the word fear.

  488. We don't make good decisions when we're fearful.

  489. And actually, it's interesting in the financial peace class

  490. that we're running right now, on Sunday afternoons, they were

  491. talking about marketing and how marketers get you to buy things

  492. that you don't really need. And a major play in that is

  493. fear. Fear of missing out or fear of

  494. not being prepared for something or whatever.

  495. And so fear does not allow us to make great decisions in general.

  496. So you're absolutely correct about that, Yeah.

  497. So ditch the FOMO not formed by feelings continuing on Romans 8

  498. verse one because of because of this, because of this war going

  499. on, who will deliver me Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ

  500. our Lord. So then I'm serving the law of

  501. God with my mind, with my flesh. I serve the law of sin.

  502. But because we have thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our

  503. Lord, Romans 81. There is therefore now no

  504. condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus for the law of

  505. the Spirit of life that set you free in Christ Jesus from the

  506. law of sin and death. For God is done with the law,

  507. weakened by the flesh, could not do freedom.

  508. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are

  509. in Christ Jesus. So what does that say?

  510. Removing the fear, removing the condemnation for who, how, why?

  511. For those who are in Christ Jesus.

  512. So being in Christ is something that I want if I don't want to

  513. live in fear or condemnation, right?

  514. Yep. And so then we, I did not have,

  515. I didn't know. I probably should have, but I

  516. didn't take the time yesterday to accurately describe.

  517. OK, so if we're going to be using this phrase because Paul

  518. uses it a lot in Christ, what does that actually mean to be in

  519. Christ? What does that look like?

  520. So there's some, of course, very surface level practical ways to

  521. do that. You know, the Bible would tell

  522. us that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be

  523. saved. OK, So as I call in the name of

  524. Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, then the Bible would

  525. therefore tell me I am in Christ because I'm putting my faith in

  526. Him. I'm putting my trust in my hope,

  527. and I'm putting my eternity in His hands.

  528. That makes me in Christ. However, there's other ways that

  529. I'm in Christ too. In my baptism, I am in Christ

  530. because in my baptism God washes me clean.

  531. He imbues me with the Holy Spirit in communion.

  532. I am in Christ, in Christ is in me through the body and blood of

  533. Jesus. And so there's these practical

  534. ways that we become, you know, in Christ.

  535. And that's just a few. And so this is this is from the

  536. cause of commentary too. And during word, this in Christ

  537. phrase imports that there is a mystical and spiritual union

  538. betwixt Christ and believers. Wow, didn't think I was going to

  539. wake up and say betwixt today, but there it is.

  540. That's a good one. This is sometimes expressed by

  541. Christ being in them and hereby they're being in Christ.

  542. Christ is in believers by his spirit and his believers are in

  543. Christ by faith, right? So those are the, that's the

  544. kind of meat and potatoes of, of in Christ language, right?

  545. You're you're in Christ. Christ is in us by his Spirit.

  546. We talked about that a few weeks ago that the temple of of the

  547. Holy Spirit, right. It's the the indwelling, the the

  548. seal of salvation that the Holy Spirit is for the believer and

  549. believers are in Christ by faith.

  550. This then is there is therefore therefore now no condemnation

  551. and that changes our state. It's not we're less guilty.

  552. It's we are not guilty. Oh wow, that's a fantastic way

  553. to put that. It's not less guilty.

  554. It's not at all. Wow.

  555. My goodness, Matt Schweitzer, that was that's really good.

  556. I really like that a lot. No, I I just think, you know,

  557. I'm not anybody who knows me. I'm not.

  558. I think it's good to memorize scripture to keep that, you

  559. know, squarely in your mind and your heart.

  560. However, I myself am not a huge like I'm not in my office

  561. looking at flash cards trying to memorize stuff so I can sound

  562. really smart and whatever when people bring stuff up.

  563. But if there was ever a verse to memorize to to make sure that we

  564. are grounded in the grace of Jesus Christ, Romans 81 might be

  565. the thing. Because for sure with this

  566. struggle between our sin nature of the flesh and and what the

  567. Spirit wants to do in and through us when we fail, man,

  568. the accuser is right on the door.

  569. Like, see, I told you you're, you're not what you say you are

  570. and he's just pushing and poking all of the time.

  571. And then I think you said it recently, maybe maybe during the

  572. worship set, man, we have to preach to ourselves.

  573. We do we have to preach the gospel to ourselves.

  574. And if I need a gospel moment to preach to myself, oftentimes

  575. when there is failure and there is sin in my life, well, guess

  576. what? It should be Romans 81 because I

  577. am not condemned, I am set free. I am I, I am declared not

  578. guilty, the opposite of condemnation, right?

  579. I'm declared not guilty in Christ.

  580. And so to hold on to that with the tightest grip I possibly

  581. can. So important.

  582. Yeah, and that's so I read from Psalm 42 yesterday, which David

  583. is also having this sort of wrestling sequence between,

  584. between sin and and depression, anxiety, guilt from that and and

  585. hope in, in that same preaching way I think that Paul is doing

  586. here. He's he's wrestling in this war

  587. between his mind and his flesh and and he's preaching to

  588. himself. But I'm in Christ and there is

  589. no condom. I'm, I'm in right standing

  590. before God because of Christ. It's the same thing that David's

  591. saying in Psalm 42. Why are you downcast on my soul?

  592. Put your hope in God. He is he is my salvation and my

  593. God. Like that's that's the same

  594. thing in Christ. That's that's where I've been

  595. sheltered and found because there's a flip side of this too.

  596. This is this is another thought from from Charles Spurgeon.

  597. If you are not in Jesus Christ, there is condemnation for you.

  598. If if, therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who

  599. are in Christ, that means there is condemnation for those who

  600. are not in Christ. He says it's no pleasant task

  601. for it to have to speak of this matter.

  602. But who are we that we should ask for pleasant task?

  603. What God has witnessed in Scripture is the sum and

  604. substance of what the Lord's servants are to testify to the

  605. people. If you are not in Christ Jesus

  606. and walking after the flesh, you have not escaped from

  607. condemnation. Yeah, and well, and let's go to

  608. John chapter 3. For God so loved the world that

    John 3 chapter mention

  609. he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should

  610. not perish, but have eternal life.

  611. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the

  612. world, but in order that the world might be saved through

  613. him. Verse 18 Whoever believes is not

  614. condemned. And then here's the big punch.

  615. But whoever does not believe is condemned already.

  616. Ouch. Presently standing Condemned.

  617. Yes, right. And and I mean, how much more

  618. than do we need Romans 81 as we come into a fruition and

  619. understanding of our sin nature and how badly we failed God.

  620. I, I, I can't help but just totally feel like I understand

  621. another human being who I've never met when Paul, you know,

  622. says wretched man that I am in verse 24, wretched.

  623. And The thing is like the closer I draw to Christ, the more I can

  624. feel that, but it doesn't destroy me.

  625. It doesn't destroy me. It just makes me cling to Jesus

  626. all the more and so. And that's, and that's the thing

  627. for Christians that we need to constantly get.

  628. We need to be aware of our sin. We need to repent of it.

  629. We need to know it exists. We need to all those things.

  630. And Paul rightly declares himself wretched.

  631. He and in that word can be also be translated.

  632. I am a miserable being. Really.

  633. Look at how miserable I am. Right.

  634. So we can simultaneously declare that, while we also declare no

  635. condemnation, while we also declare freedom, while we also

  636. declare life. But we don't do that through Hey

  637. man, I'm doing better than I was last week.

  638. No, we do that through. I'm clinging on to Jesus for my

  639. every moment, for my every need, because He's the one who

  640. declares me through His work, righteous He is.

  641. He has given that to me, despite the fact that I am wretched,

  642. which shows His great and His unending and His steadfast love.

  643. Amen. There it is.

  644. So that brings us back though too.

  645. We want to be, we want to be in Christ and that's the OK Spirit

  646. dwells in him. You, you've professed faith in

  647. there and therefore you are in Christ.

  648. So the Spirit dwells in the believer.

  649. But how do we, how do we arrive on that?

  650. I think it's back to the, the John 3 passage that you were

  651. just talking about, verse 15 and John 3.

  652. Whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal

  653. life right there. So faith comes about by by

  654. profession of belief. It's by grace through faith,

  655. right? So declaring I'm a Sinner in

  656. need of God's grace, Jesus Christ poured his life out on

  657. the crossroads from the dead. That declaring that belief,

  658. there's also the the sacrament of baptism, right?

  659. There's we, we do baptize infants.

  660. We'll baptize any any believer, but infant baptism, we do

  661. believe there's a there's an outpouring of grace like it's

  662. it's a gift of faith. Is it, is it the same faith that

  663. is professed by the person? Well, in light of salvation?

  664. Arguably, yes, right? Of course it doesn't get that.

  665. We're not saying that baby has declared their faith, but also

  666. that's possibly focusing on the wrong thing in baptism.

  667. Who's who's doing the work? Do we, do we get the gift of

  668. faith because of our work of declaring it?

  669. Or is it actually a gift? And that's the picture we see in

  670. baptizing an infant, right? It's God doing the work.

  671. It's God imparting faith through grace, right?

  672. By grace through faith. Yeah, so.

  673. So. That's that's the the how the,

  674. the how you are found in Christ. If you're not baptized and and

  675. you're professing these things, yeah, we let's get you baptized.

  676. Let's do it. If if you are parents of

  677. children that you you want to dedicate, enter into this faith

  678. that you possess. Yeah, baptize them now at the

  679. the phrase in Matthew 28, the Great Commission is baptize and

  680. teach. So yes, we can impart this gift

  681. of faith by grace poured out in baptism.

  682. And then they're in your household.

  683. They're brought up in these things you talked about in the

  684. past couple weeks, this generational inheritance of, of

  685. faith, right. Like that's that's what family

  686. under the lordship of of Christ is.

  687. That's how it's designed. We're not, we're not baptizing

  688. them as babies and hoping they figure it out on their own.

  689. No, we should be, we should be enriching and imparting and

  690. teaching these, these things, these these greater tenets of

  691. faith. We're not just eating baby food,

  692. right? We should be building them up,

  693. teaching them up, bring it, bringing them into adulthood of,

  694. of faith and a deeper understanding of things, right?

  695. So. Very good.

  696. Yeah. And so, I mean, The thing is,

  697. like with infant baptism, we're also, we're, we are, we are

  698. saying who's doing the work, right?

  699. I mean, come on, like, I can declare it all day, but man,

  700. it's still God who's doing the work in me to be able to declare

  701. it. And so I mean, plus add, add the

  702. fact that David makes it painfully clear that, I mean,

  703. from the moment of his conception, he was sinful.

  704. Even prior to breathing air, he was a sinful being because that

  705. has been passed down to us through the generations, through

  706. Adam and Eve. And so it is totally appropriate

  707. to, through baptism, wash those sins away and give the Holy

  708. Spirit so that in their more mature years, that child,

  709. through teaching and through growing up in a church

  710. community, can come to a mature faith that then can, by the Holy

  711. Spirit declare that faith. But it is all done on God's

  712. work, God's back, God's effort, never ours.

  713. Yeah, washing and regeneration still necessary, needed.

  714. That's that's the point that even that infant that that baby

  715. is bad. So the washing and regeneration

  716. in baptism is still absolutely applicable to to that little

  717. life. So yeah, that's nuts and bolts

  718. of in Christ. I think verse 2 in Romans 8, we

  719. kind of worked through that. For the law of the spirit of

  720. life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and

  721. death. For God has done what the law

  722. weakened by the flesh could not do by sending his own Son in the

  723. likeness of sinful flesh. And for sin.

  724. He condemned sin in the flesh. I want to OK, so I want to pick

  725. your brain on this a little bit. This was part of the the small

  726. group questions condemned sin in the flesh.

  727. What what are we getting at here?

  728. Because I think I think there's a couple different meanings that

  729. you can like Garner from this phrase.

  730. Well, the I think the most obvious one on the surface is

  731. that and we talked about it yesterday during the Sunday

  732. services, is that God did, Jesus did endure that condemnation in

  733. his very flesh. And yes, Jesus is God and Jesus

  734. is man. He is fully both.

  735. And I think, you know, I've heard it elsewhere and I think

  736. this is just ridiculous that somehow Jesus.

  737. It's as if, like his, you know, his feelings were turned off and

  738. so that way he wasn't actually feeling the pain of that

  739. condemnation in his flesh. Baloney.

  740. I don't believe that for a second.

  741. No way. He couldn't be fully man if he

  742. just turned off his those, you know, feeling receptacles and

  743. like, yeah, he can't just turn off his nerve ending to be like,

  744. well, just another day. No, like he is fully man.

  745. And so again, I think the most obvious on the surface 1 is Yep,

  746. he absolutely felt every single one of those lashes, every

  747. punch, every kick, every, every time somebody he felt all that

  748. stuff. And that is God literally

  749. condemning sin in the. In being in the flesh, right?

  750. The full, the fully man part of Jesus that was, that was fully

  751. perfect and lived it up, but also endured that fleshly death,

  752. right? That that's how he condemned sin

  753. in in the flesh, being in the flesh for us, in our place,

  754. right? Yep, and I mean, I don't think

  755. it's, I don't think it's a coincidence that Paul uses the

  756. word likeness when talking about Jesus as a man because we are

  757. made in God's image and likeness.

  758. Therefore 100% man, 100% God. God giving up his right and his

  759. ability to say no, I've had enough.

  760. No, he, he's like, I'm going to take this for you because you

  761. need me to. So that's at least one way to

  762. look at this. Did you have another thought

  763. coming out of your life group? No, that was, I mean, that was

  764. where we ended on. I just don't want to hear the

  765. condemnation of sinning in the flesh right and and don't hear

  766. don't hear what I'm saying there is condemnation for sinning in

  767. the flesh for those who are not in Christ Jesus right that there

  768. is losing that war to the law of sin with the flesh that he's

  769. talking about in Chapter 7. Like that's yes, that that there

  770. is condemnation for sin of the flesh in that but in Christ

  771. that's that's where the victory is right because he came in the

  772. flesh to condemn sin in his in his flesh.

  773. By that verse 4, the righteous requirement of the law might be

  774. fulfilled in US who are not walk not according to the flesh, but

  775. according to the Spirit. That's the spirit in dwell part

  776. right. Those are who have believed in

  777. Christ, then have the spirit in them and by the Spirit Christ

  778. has fulfilled the righteous requirement.

  779. We're not again, we're, we're standing before God, not less

  780. guilty, but not guilty at, at all, right?

  781. So that's fulfilling the requirement of law.

  782. We're standing spotless, perfect before God, because we're in

  783. Christ. Well, and you know, to to walk

  784. according to the spirit, you might ask, what would that even

  785. look like? To which you could pretty

  786. quickly. And there's, there's a lot of

  787. different ways to describe this, but I think maybe the quickest

  788. way to describe this is the person walking according to the

  789. Spirit. You know what they're going to

  790. do, they're going to produce fruit as the Bible would talk

  791. about it. And so, you know, what are the

  792. fruits of the Spirit? Joy, peace, patience, kindness,

  793. etcetera, etcetera. And so, you know, for the person

  794. who is walking with Christ, who's in Christ, we've talked

  795. about this before. But if I declare Christ as my

  796. Lord and King, and then I live the same way I've been living

  797. like perfectly exactly, you know, as before I declared

  798. Christ as my king. Am I walking in the spirit or am

  799. I just using words? We do need to allow God to shape

  800. what we do, how we act, how we speak to people.

  801. And we're, you know, we say it all the time.

  802. We're not going to be perfect at that, of course, because we are

  803. still sinners. However, there ought to be a

  804. change. There should be some kind of

  805. change that people go that's different.

  806. I would have thought that they would have reacted differently

  807. to that moment based on what I've known about them

  808. previously. But no, like if I'm walking in

  809. the spirit, there's going to be a change in my behavior.

  810. Yeah, absolutely. And that kind of rings me if, if

  811. you have more thoughts we can bring those into.

  812. But I wanted to get to this closing thought of the song we

  813. did yesterday. We closed the service a little

  814. differently, didn't bring the whole band back up and didn't

  815. really do a it was kind of a hard song to follow along.

  816. It was more of a or at least sing along with it.

  817. It was more of a descriptive sort of prayerful reflection

  818. song. It's called Barabbas.

  819. It's by Josiah Queen. But I got AI got a question

  820. about that, like why? And it's just a matter of

  821. perspective. The the perspective of the song

  822. is not that we are friends of Barabbas, It's that we are

  823. Barabbas. Like the the perspective of the

  824. song is sung from Barabbas watching Jesus take his put

  825. quite literally take his place on on the cross.

  826. That would have been for him. And that's what Jesus has done

  827. for each and every one of us who are in Christ, right?

  828. We are Barabbas. So that song is just kind of it.

  829. It should be to some degree each and every one of our personal

  830. testimonies. Why did he he didn't deserve to

  831. serve my penalty. That's that's our perspective of

  832. of Jesus. I'll never understand the

  833. repercussions of my every sin. Is it hatred or is it simply

  834. pouring out from bitterness? That's some of the questions

  835. that that Paul's asking here. Why do why do I battle this that

  836. why do I still do these fleshly things?

  837. That is outright rebellion hatred.

  838. Is it is it bitterness for something?

  839. Is it retribution for for things.

  840. So anyway, that was just that was kind of the heart by that we

  841. are Barabbas. That is our perspective towards

  842. Christ. But those who are found in

  843. Christ then call him friend right there.

  844. There's no condemnation for those who who have believed who

  845. are calling him friends. So that's kind of the closing

  846. line you took upon my cross. I'll never I'll never.

  847. Oh man, I can't run away. That's what it is.

  848. I can't run away from what I accuser say.

  849. We said we still feel that right.

  850. We still feel that tension. We feel that condemnation, but

  851. because we're calling to Christ where we're in Christ, we're

  852. believing in Christ. I am Barabbas, your friend.

  853. That's where we can rest in, in not having condemnation.

  854. I actually, it rang so true with me yesterday and even today as

  855. you kind of repeated it. I can't run from what my accuser

  856. say, man, you know what? I I could try and I have tried.

  857. And when I try and maybe I've even feel like I succeed in

  858. running away, all I've done is I've justified myself.

  859. Instead of allowing Christ to justify me through what he's

  860. done, I've just justified myself.

  861. But here's the beautiful part about this.

  862. I don't have to run anymore. I am free.

  863. I can get off the treadmill of self.

  864. You know of that denial and I can stop running away from the

  865. truth about me and I can look at it in the face and say, Yep,

  866. that was me. But in Christ I am a new

  867. creation. And all the more come at me with

  868. your accusations. I'll probably agree with you.

  869. But I also have Romans 81. There's there.

  870. There's now therefore no condemnation for me in Christ

  871. Jesus. So I don't have to run anymore.

  872. And that is real freedom. Yeah, that's it.

  873. So if you haven't listened to Pastor Chris sermon from

  874. yesterday again, I thought you just hit it out of the park,

  875. man. Very well said.

  876. Thanks for kicking us off in this series in Romans.

  877. Thanks for tuning in, listening to some more thoughts, things

  878. that we, yeah, just couldn't cram into the message yesterday

  879. or some just. Yeah, points we wanted to

  880. highlight from yesterday, too. Thanks for tuning in.

  881. Share the leftovers with with someone if you'd like to Feel

  882. free to comment on your thoughts of spoilers and why it's OK that

  883. we do that at church, but also what the yeah, what the timeline

  884. for things is, what's what's acceptable.

  885. We'll be back with you next week.

  886. Have a blessed week, Church.
