  1. If you would turn with me to 1st.

  2. John Chapter 5. We will be.

    John 5 chapter mention

  3. Reading from verse 5. Through verse 13, who?

  4. Is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who.

  5. Believes that Jesus. Is the Son of God.

  6. This is the one who came by water and.

  7. By blood, Jesus Christ. Not with water only.

  8. But with water. And with the blood.

  9. It is the Spirit that testifies because the Spirit is truth.

  10. For there are three that testify the.

  11. Spirit and the water and the blood and the three are in

  12. agreement. If we.

  13. Receive the witness of men. The testimony of God is.

  14. Greater for the. Testimony of God.

  15. Is this? That he has testified.

  16. Concerning his son, the one who believes in the son of.

  17. God has the. Testimony in himself the one who

  18. does not. Believe God.

  19. Has made him out to be a liar because he has not believed in

  20. the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.

  21. And this is the. Testimony that God has.

  22. Given to us eternal life and this test.

  23. And this? Life is in his Son.

  24. The one who has the Son has life.

  25. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life,

  26. these things. Have I written unto you who

  27. believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that

  28. you have eternal? Life.

  29. On Wednesday night, June 19th. I reviewed the 1st 4 chapters.

  30. Of first John. Plus the 1st 4 verses of chapter

  31. 5. Because the last time I had

  32. preached on 1st John was Wednesday March 4th 2020, so I

  33. thought some review was needed. So we did that on Wednesday

  34. night and. Today as we look through the

  35. verses. We have tonight verses 5 through

  36. 13. Actually, 5 through 8 would be a

  37. review of. Wednesday night.

  38. So let's start with verse five. Who?

  39. Is the one who is overcome the world, but the one who.

  40. Believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

  41. This word. Overcome or Overcomer?

  42. It's a word that. Means conqueror or victorious. 1

  43. It was used when the Ancients would go out to.

  44. War and they would war against another king, the.

  45. Victorious ones would come home with this.

  46. They would. Be the overcomers.

  47. So the question is. Acts here who is?

  48. The one who overcomes the world, but the one who.

  49. Believes that Jesus. Christ is the Son of God.

  50. You and I, believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, puts

  51. us in that camp of the overcomers.

  52. Now this. Isn't talking about an

  53. intellectual belief, It's talking.

  54. About a practical belief, if you believe in Christ, that means

  55. you trust. In and rely up on Christ and

  56. what it is He has done. For your salvation and that

  57. believing also brings with it obedience.

  58. There is nothing to the idea of being a Christian and not being

  59. obedient to God. That's just not in the.

  60. Scriptures at all. And so when we see that.

  61. We must understand that then, and that he says.

  62. The one who? Believes that Jesus.

  63. Is the Son of God. Everyone who believes this is a

  64. continuing belief when he talks to us about the.

  65. Ones who have been commanded to believe in God.

  66. That's talking about the time that we.

  67. Gave our life to Christ, but every Christian continues from

  68. that point of giving their life to.

  69. Christ to believing in what it. Is that God has done for him.

  70. But the Christian never will, and that's what he is bringing

  71. to us, to help us to understand that.

  72. There's never a point to where we as Christians stop believing.

  73. Someone else may stop and and stop participating with us and

  74. walk. John helps us with that idea in

  75. John Chapter 5, verse one, everyone.

    John 5 chapter mention

  76. Who believes that Jesus is the Christ is?

  77. Born of God and everyone who. Loves the father, loves the

  78. child, that is. Born of him, everyone who

  79. continues to believe he's born of God.

  80. That's your proof of. How it is that you know that

  81. you're born of God. Then he talked about that one

  82. time thing and. First, John 523.

  83. And this is his commandment that we believe in the name of.

  84. Jesus Christ. And love one another.

  85. Just as he has. Commanded us See this is that

  86. one time thing, remember? The jailer in Acts chapter 16

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  87. when he asked the question men and.

  88. Brother And what must I do to be saved?

  89. In Acts chapter 16 verse 31 they give him the answer.

    Acts 16:31

  90. Believe in the Lord. Jesus Christ and you will be

  91. saved. And your whole house make a

  92. decision now this point in your life.

  93. Believe in the Lord. Jesus Christ and.

  94. You will be saved and from that point on the the jailer continue

  95. to believe. And that's what's happened.

  96. To all of us as. Christians and we see this.

  97. What are we to believe? Believe that Jesus is.

  98. The Son of God when John. Says Jesus is.

  99. The Son of God. Every Jew knew that John was.

  100. Saying that Jesus is God. Every.

  101. Jew would believe that. Look at the.

  102. Gospel of John chapter 5, starting at verse 15.

    John 5 chapter mention

  103. He's already talking about. The persecution of Jesus.

  104. He says for this. Reason the Jews.

  105. Were persecuting Jesus because. He was doing these things.

  106. On the Sabbath for things he had healed a lame man.

  107. He did this on the Sabbath, but he answered them.

  108. My father is working until now and I myself am working.

  109. For this. Reason, therefore the Jews were

  110. seeking. All the more to kill him because

  111. he. Not only was breaking.

  112. The Sabbath, but he was calling God his own Father, making

  113. himself equal with. God.

  114. No person in the Old Testament ever called God his Father when.

  115. They saw this, they said. This man has now claimed to be

  116. God. Because, he said, my father has

  117. worked up until now and now. I am working look at John

    John 10 chapter mention

  118. chapter 10. Verse 33 the.

  119. Jews answered him. We are not stoning you.

  120. For good work. But for blasphemy, and because

  121. you being a man made. Yourself out to be God now if

  122. you familiar with? How they translated?

  123. The Bible. If you look at those 3 words out

  124. to be, they're probably in italics.

  125. In your Bible, that means they're not in the.

  126. Original, so the. Phrase would really mean you

  127. being man, made yourself God. This why that they were about to

  128. stone him, that he. Being a man had made himself.

  129. Out to be God. But you know, even the disciples

  130. didn't really get it. You look at John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  131. Verses 7 to 9 Jesus would say to them, if you have known me, you

  132. would have known my Father also. From now on you know him and

  133. have seen him, Philip said unto him, Lord, show.

  134. Us the Father. And it is enough for us.

  135. Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you?

  136. And yet. You have not not come to know

  137. me, Philip. The one who has seen me has seen

  138. the Father. How can you say?

  139. Show us the Father. It is clear from Scripture that.

  140. Jesus Christ is God. And when John uses this term?

  141. He is telling us that. Believe that Jesus is the.

  142. Son of God. He mean in the fullest sense of

  143. the. Bible description of Jesus.

  144. He is the Christ from the Old Testament called the Messiah.

  145. He has come to us in the flesh. That he would die.

  146. On the cross and be. Raised the third day he would

  147. ascend back into. Heaven to make intercessions for

  148. us. And He's coming again to receive

  149. us unto himself. This is what He's calling us to

  150. do when he says believe in. Jesus Christ, let's move.

  151. Further in our review for first John Chapter 5. 6 through 8.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  152. This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ,

  153. not with water only, but with water and with the blood.

  154. It is the Spirit who testifies because the Spirit is true.

  155. For there are three that testify the Spirit.

  156. And the water and the blood. And the three are in agreement.

  157. When you're in agreement, that means you say the same.

  158. Thing you you are bringing out the same thing.

  159. What are the? 3IN agreements.

  160. About about who Jesus Christ is. At the baptism the heavens open.

  161. The father spoke. And the spirit came down in the

  162. form. Of a dog dove.

  163. And rested up on him. Matthew chapter 3 verses 16

  164. through 18 at the Crucifixion the.

  165. Veil was torn from. Top to bottom Matthew Chapter 7,

  166. verse 51, indicating that there is no reason to keep the.

  167. Holies of Holies heed from everybody else.

  168. Because he who is holy has. Died on the cross and paid the

  169. penalty for all of our sins, therefore.

  170. All of those who? Could not go in now and see it

  171. it has been ripped. From top to bottom.

  172. That brings us to our. Verses for today if we received.

  173. The Testimony of Men, verse 9. The testimony.

  174. Of God is greater for the. Testimony of God is.

  175. This that he has testified concerning his son John.

  176. Lets the people. Of his day know.

  177. That if they. Accept the testimony of men on

  178. lesser issues. How foolish it is to not to

  179. accept God's testimony. On greater things if John was

  180. writing. To us today he would say

  181. something like if. You receive the testimony of the

  182. Internet or your favorite news. How foolish it would be.

  183. Not to receive the testimony of. God, because God's testimony is

  184. greater. And that's the thing that we

  185. have to come to and have to keep in mind and share with.

  186. Those as we go among. People of the world today, Donna

  187. and I was up in. Washington visiting some

  188. relatives and having a family reunion.

  189. And there was a preacher there in the group.

  190. He asked me. He's What's your opinion on the

  191. flood? He just Was it a worldwide

  192. flood? Was it a local flood?

  193. And then he quoted. Hugh Ross and I already knew he

  194. was in trouble. When he said that, so I said to

  195. him my opinion. Of the flood is the exact as the

  196. Bible says it was. We don't have to wonder, was it

  197. a worldwide? Flood the The Bible tells us it

  198. was so why are we debating whether or not it was a

  199. worldwide flood or not? I don't care who.

  200. Says it is. When God says it, we can believe

  201. it. And we can stand on it.

  202. And that's the thing. That we are called to do because

  203. God testimony is. Now look at verse 10.

  204. The One who believes. In the Son of God.

  205. Has this. Testimony in himself.

  206. The one who does not. Believe God has made.

  207. Him out to. Be a liar.

  208. Because he has not believed the testimony that God has given

  209. concerning his Son. Now, on Wednesday night, the

  210. 19th, when I shared this, I quoted John McCarthy.

  211. Here he he talks about the fact that is John writes in his

  212. epistle and as he wrote the gospel, John always make a clear

  213. comparison between two things and John MacArthur says he never

  214. adds 1/3 and that's a good point because when he walks through

  215. these scriptures with us he keeps the comparison.

  216. To two the one who believes in the son of.

  217. God has this. Testimony in himself, by the

  218. way, that's a clue. He didn't say he knows this

  219. testimony. He says he has this.

  220. Testimony within himself. The one who does not.

  221. Believe God has made. Him out to.

  222. Be a liar. Because he is not believed in

  223. the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.

  224. What arrogance? To believe that you know more

  225. than God and you're willing to say now, it doesn't mean that

  226. God is a liar. He said for that person he has

  227. made God. Out to be a liar.

  228. And that's what you and I. Are called to.

  229. By the way, we see. A lot of things being passed off

  230. as Christianity Today, one of our cousins in Washington said

  231. to her parents recently. I.

  232. Am giving up on the church, but I'm not giving up on God now.

  233. My concern was that the parents didn't ask any questions.

  234. My question would have been how do you give up on the church

  235. whom God died? For and not give up on God.

  236. It's impossible. How is it that you forsake the

  237. assembling of? Yourself, together with the

  238. people who God has told you not to forsake yourself and not.

  239. Give up on God. There are times to ask question

  240. people, and when you hear some junk like that, you need to ask

  241. some questions. In verse 10 here the one who

  242. believes in the Son of God has this testimony in himself.

  243. Look at first John chapter. 4 verse 2.

  244. He says By this you know the Spirit.

  245. Of God. Every spirit that confess that

  246. Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

  247. Every Spirit that confess. That Jesus Christ is coming to

  248. flesh. There's a difference between

  249. saying that Jesus Christ is coming to.

  250. Flesh and confessing that Jesus Christ is coming to flesh when

  251. you say something you're speaking with.

  252. The mouth. When you confess something, you

  253. are agreeing with what has already been said.

  254. We have to agree with what the Bible.

  255. Has said about Jesus Christ not what man says about him.

  256. That's what he's bringing us to understand here, a lot of

  257. people. Will come and knock on your door

  258. and tell you about a. Jesus that they believe in.

  259. It is not the Jesus of the. Scripture and that's what John

  260. is pointing out here. You have to believe in the

  261. Jesus. Of the scripture first.

    1 John 4:15

  262. John Chapter 4, verse 15, whoever.

  263. Confesses that Jesus is. The son of.

  264. God. Remains in him and he and God.

  265. There's that word again. Confess whoever agrees with.

  266. What? The Bible has already said that.

  267. Person has the. Spirit of God.

  268. In him. That's why the Bible tells us if

  269. we confess our sins, it's not really telling us to.

  270. Tell God our sins. It's telling us.

  271. To agree with the Holy Spirit who has convicted.

  272. Us that we have sent and when we do.

  273. That he says he's faithful and just to.

  274. Forgive us of our. Sins and to cleanse us from all

  275. unrighteousness. Moving on to verse 11.

  276. And this is the testimony. That God has given to us eternal

  277. life, and this life is in his Son.

  278. He just keeps coming back to this this thing about eternal

  279. life. John has a point that he wants

  280. to make here. For the believers and He's.

  281. Bringing it home to them. Look back at first.

  282. John Chapter one verse. And the life was revealed.

  283. And we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal

  284. life. Which was with the Father and

  285. was revealed to us. He says This life.

  286. Was revealed. And we have seen it and.

  287. We have testify. And proclaim to you the eternal

  288. life which. Was with the Father and has been

  289. revealed to us. Now who was that?

  290. Jesus Christ, he says. We've seen him.

  291. He would go on to say we have touched him, Our eyes have seen

  292. him, we have touched him with our hands and we've handled.

  293. Him. He says this is eternal life.

  294. First John chapter 2 verse 25. This is the promise which.

    1 John 2:25

  295. He himself made to us eternal. Life.

  296. You know, people make promises all the time.

  297. This is the. Sometimes they're kept,

  298. sometimes they are not. Paul as he was writing to

  299. Timothy. I'm sorry to Titus.

  300. In Titus chapter one verses one and two Paul.

  301. A slave of God and an. Apostle of Jesus Christ, for the

  302. faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge.

  303. Of the truth which is according to godliness in the hope of

  304. eternal life. Which God who cannot lie,

  305. promised? Ages ago.

  306. Now, isn't it? Good to have a.

  307. Testimony about God that He is the One Who.

  308. Can not lie. He has promised.

  309. What has he promised? He's promised to us the hope of

  310. eternal life. And I just want to keep going

  311. over this word. Hope because the English.

  312. Word isn't good enough for us, You know I.

  313. I hope. I get to tomorrow.

  314. Don't know if I will or not, but I hope.

  315. I get there. That's the English word but the

  316. Greek word. Here is the assured expectation,

  317. so let's read it that way. In the assured expectation of

  318. eternal life, which God who cannot lie.

  319. Promised a long time ago. What does an assured expectation

  320. mean? Something that you are.

  321. Sure of that you? Do not have right now, he says.

  322. That's the hope that we live in. That's how we.

  323. Live this life and we get this from the God who cannot lie.

  324. Who is promised so John, as he writes in First John 225.

  325. He says this is the promise. Which he himself made to us

  326. eternal life. John would further on this and

  327. 1st John 5/20 he says and we know that the son of.

  328. God has come and has given us understanding so that we might

  329. know Him who is true and we are in Him.

  330. Who is true in his Son Jesus? Christ, this is the.

  331. True God and. Eternal life.

  332. John just keeps on bringing this out that.

  333. Jesus. Christ is eternal life and that

  334. he has come. To share this with us in this

  335. next verse. Would be verse 12.

  336. John breaks the whole. In the two groups of people.

  337. He breaks the whole. World into.

  338. Two groups of people. Verse 12 says the one who has

  339. the son has life. The one who does not have the

  340. Son of God. Does not have life.

  341. There's not a room. Here for a third group.

  342. You either have the Son and have life, or you do not have the Son

  343. of God and you do not have life. And the life that is being

  344. talked about here is eternal life.

  345. John makes it clear this is how we can know where we stand.

  346. You know, you can just about Google, Google anything today.

  347. So I went and googled what was the population of the earth at

  348. the time of Christ? Came back with an answer, they

  349. said. There was about 300 million

  350. people. Living on the earth at the time

  351. that this was written, John broke those 300 million people

  352. into two groups, The one who has the son and the one who does not

  353. have the son. The same report goes on to.

  354. Tell us that the population. Of the earth was unchanged all

  355. the for about another 1000 years, and then in 18.

  356. O4 the population. Surpassed the 1 billion mark.

  357. But it was still true. That the ones who had the Son

  358. had life and the one. Who did not have the son did not

  359. have life. Our population records tells us

  360. today that we are approaching 8 billion people in the world.

  361. The Bible is still true. The one who has the Son has.

  362. Life and the one who does not have.

  363. It's just that simple. The Son of God does not have.

  364. People. There are two groups of people

  365. in the world. Two, you and I as Christians,

  366. make up one of those groups. And the other group would be

  367. those who do not have the son or the.

  368. Scripture would say they're. Sinners for you and for me every

  369. time we meet a new. Person our thought should be.

  370. What group are you in, Donna and I?

  371. Was down in Texas recently, if you don't know this.

  372. Texas has a travel center. Called Bucky's if you.

  373. Ever in Texas, you want to stop by Bucky's.

  374. So Donna and I. Was had visited Bucky's early in

  375. the morning. Donna's gone back.

  376. To the car and I was walking out.

  377. To the car and there was this young lady walked up beside me.

  378. She said good morning, Sir, said good morning, she says.

  379. I just want you to know that. Jesus.

  380. Loves you, and he has a wonderful plan for your life.

  381. As we chatted there. For a couple of moments and

  382. decided that we were both on our way to heaven.

  383. We greeted each other and we went our separate ways.

  384. I have a question for you. Why did she approach me?

  385. She wanted to know what group I was in.

  386. When she found out then we had a short time of fellowship.

  387. Here are two people leaving Bucky's and she decided I'm

  388. going to find out what group this guy's in and the benefit

  389. was. We got the fellowship for a

  390. little bit. You and I have to be in that

  391. same mind. Reference Meet this new person,

  392. How can I get? To the question.

  393. Of what group is this person in? If it's a believer.

  394. We get to rejoice. If it's not a believer, then we

  395. look for an opportunity to share that we might proclaim him.

  396. You see this third mark on the board.

  397. Over here. Our purpose is to proclaim him.

  398. That's what our purpose is. That's why we have been left

  399. here on this earth. To proclaim him.

  400. Who are we proclaiming him to? To those who do not know him,

  401. that's what our responsibility is.

  402. Now let's. Look at verse 13.

  403. These things have I written into you who believe in the name of

  404. the Son of God, that you might know.

  405. That you have eternal. Life when I was.

  406. Studying this years ago and I reviewed this this time.

  407. When I'm studying it, I I look. This word.

  408. No, up in about 20 different versions of the scripture.

  409. All of them translated the same way.

  410. That you may know that you have eternal life one writer.

  411. Said this is a. No.

  412. So salvation We aren't wondering whether we are saved or not.

  413. We can know. That we are saved.

  414. When John says in this verse these things, he is referring

  415. back to everything that he has written.

  416. Up to this point, these things have I written unto you.

  417. Let us. Look at a similar station, a

  418. statement in John's Gospel in John chapter 20 and verse 31.

    John 20 chapter mention

  419. The Gospel of John, chapter 20, verse 31.

    John 20:31

  420. These things, excuse me, but these have been written.

  421. So that you may believe in that. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of

  422. God, and by believing you may have life in His name.

  423. These things have been written. John is referring back.

  424. To what he is written from the first of the gospel.

  425. Up to this point. Now he tells us who he is

  426. writing to and why he is writing to unbelievers.

  427. So that they might come to believe.

  428. I find it interesting that John waits until chapter five of

  429. First John. To tell us who?

  430. He's writing to these things. Have I?

  431. Written unto you who believe. So now he's writing to

  432. believers. For what purpose?

  433. So that we may know that we have eternal life.

  434. If someone asks you. Today for the address.

  435. Of your home, you wouldn't say. Well, I think it's this.

  436. You would tell them what it is when someone asks you or you

  437. saved. We're not to say, I think.

  438. So we ought to say I know so. Why?

  439. Is and what it? Because of my belief in who?

  440. Jesus. Is that he has done and by the.

  441. Evidence in my life of my. Obeying him, having put my faith

  442. in him. This is not the first time, by

  443. the way, that John has made it clear that we can know this in

  444. first John chapter 3, verse 10. He says by this the children of

    1 John 3:10

  445. God and the children of the. Devil are obvious.

  446. Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor

  447. the one who. Does not love his brother John

  448. is clear. There's a way to know whether.

  449. You are of the. Children of God or the children

  450. of the Devil? And he says it's obvious you

  451. don't have to. Well, I think that person.

  452. Is saved. Or I think I'm.

  453. Saved, he says it's. Why is it obvious?

  454. It's obvious because of your conduct, he said.

  455. The one who does not practice righteousness is not of God.

  456. If your lifestyle is more of unrighteousness than it is of

  457. righteousness, John says, there's a problem.

  458. You can claim all you want to that you are his child, but

  459. you're not my middle. Son lives in that category and

  460. when I challenged him on it, he said.

  461. Dad, you are too serious about this stuff.

  462. My response is son you are not serious enough and if you die in

  463. that condition. You're headed for a Godless.

  464. Eternity now we can't change people, but we can share.

  465. And that's what you and I have been.

  466. Called to do our. Purpose is to proclaim him.

  467. John says I write unto. Those who believe so that they

  468. might know that they have eternal life.

  469. First John, chapter one, verse 4.

  470. John says these things we write so that our.

  471. Joy may be complete. I write these things so that our

  472. joy may be complete. John is telling us to know that

  473. you have eternal life. Is to know complete?

  474. Doesn't mean there are no problems.

  475. Doesn't mean that death won't come into your family.

  476. It means when it does, God. Gives you.

  477. Comfort. And that's the thing that he's

  478. pointing to us. John, through the inspiration of

  479. the Holy Spirit, wants us to know that eternal life.

  480. That we have eternal life, although eternal life is living

  481. with God forever. It is more than just living

  482. forever. It is the quality of life we

  483. live now and. Forever as a.

  484. Christian, I'm not waiting to get to heaven to enjoy my.

  485. Eternal life. I experience it now.

  486. With the joy that God brings to me, and with the comfort He

  487. gives to me and the opportunity He gives me to share and to

  488. bring this to others. That's because I have the

  489. eternal life. That he has given unto.

  490. Us that we might know him and that we might.

  491. Follow him. It is with this knowledge.

  492. That we, the children of God, know that we have eternal life,

  493. that we come to receive the elements this morning that's on

  494. the table. It is out of that confidence

  495. that we come to this time. We don't just come because we

  496. did it last first Sunday. Or.

  497. Because we've been doing this for years, we do it because of

  498. the confidence that God gives. Us in Him that we have eternal.

  499. Life and If you are here this morning and not a member of the

  500. church, but you are a believer, you are welcome to join us as.

  501. We come to this point, Paul writes in First Corinthians 11,

  502. starting at verse 23. He says.

  503. For I received from the Lord. That which I also delivered to

  504. you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was.

  505. Betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and

  506. said this is my body. Which is for you.

  507. Do this in remembrance of me in the same way.

  508. He took the cup after supper, saying, This is the cup in the

  509. new Test, in the new covenant, in my blood.

  510. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me, for as

  511. often as. You eat this bread and drink.

  512. This cup you proclaim the Lord's.

  513. Death until he comes. Every time we take the cup.

  514. We are saying. That it represents the blood

  515. that. Jesus Christ has shed for us.

  516. On the cross, and therefore we are proclaiming to each other.

  517. That. This has been done so we can

  518. then go out and proclaim to others that they might come and

  519. join us and have this fellowship that we have in here.

  520. As the men come down, let us. Pray Father, we thank you for

  521. our time in your word. Ask that you would direct us

  522. now? As we prepare our hearts to

  523. receive this representation of your body and your blood, in

  524. Jesus name we pray. Amen.
