  1. Take your Bible, if you would please, and turn with me to 1st

  2. Thessalonians, chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.

  3. We're going to conclude this section this morning and move on

  4. to the final section beginning next week.

  5. But we're looking at what the Bible says concerning the model

  6. life and what it means to live a life of alertness.

  7. So I'm going to read to you these 11 verses to set them in

  8. your mind, and then we'll conclude them this morning.

  9. First one of chapter 5 says. Now as to the times in the

  10. epics, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written

  11. to you, for you yourselves know full well that the day of the

  12. Lord will come just like a thief in the night, while they are

  13. saying peace and safety. Then destruction will come upon

  14. them suddenly, like labor pains upon a woman with child, and

  15. they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in

  16. darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief, For

  17. you are all sons of light and sons of day.

  18. We are not of night nor of darkness.

  19. So then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert

  20. and sober. For those who sleep do their

  21. sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.

  22. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the

  23. breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of

  24. salvation. For God has not destined us for

  25. wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus

  26. Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep,

  27. we will live together with Him. Therefore, encourage one another

  28. and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

  29. Paul wants them to understand their responsibility, so he

  30. tells them by way of reminder in the first 3 verses about the day

  31. of the Lord. And then he moves on and says,

  32. based on what I'm reminding you of, I want you to be responsible

  33. in three areas as a witness, as a watchman, and as a warrior.

  34. You are a witness because you're sons of the day, you're sons of

  35. the light. You are not sons of the night,

  36. nor are you sons of darkness. In other words, he contrasts the

  37. people who are saved versus the people that are unsaved.

  38. People that are in the light are born again.

  39. People that are in the darkness are not.

  40. And so he contrasts them and encourages them to live

  41. according to their witness as lights to the world.

  42. This is not a New Testament concept.

  43. It was widely proclaimed throughout the Old Testament.

  44. In fact, over in Psalm One O 7. Listen to the words of the

  45. psalmist in verse #10 There were those who dwelt in darkness and

  46. in the shadow of death, prisoners in misery and chains,

  47. because they had rebelled against the words of God and

  48. spurned the counsel of the Most High.

  49. Therefore He humbled their heart with labor.

  50. They stumbled, and there was none to help.

  51. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble.

  52. He saved them out of their distresses.

  53. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and

  54. broke their bands apart. Let them give thanks to the Lord

  55. for His loving kindness and for His wonders to the sons of men.

  56. So the psalmist describes those who live in rebellion against

  57. God, who those who spurn the words of God as those people who

  58. wander in darkness, who so desperately need the light of

  59. life to shine down upon them. And when God rescues them,

  60. that's exactly what he does, because he is the light of the

  61. world. He is the truth.

  62. And therefore, when he shines his light, the truth is spread.

  63. Earlier the psalmist would say these words in Psalm 43.

  64. He would say in verse 3, O send out your light and your truth.

  65. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy

  66. hill and to your dwelling place. Then I will go to the altar of

  67. God, to God my exceeding joy, and upon the leer I shall praise

  68. You, O God, my God. In other words, when the Lord

  69. sends out His light, when He sends out His truth, it leads us

  70. in the proper direction. Psalm 119105 says that God's

  71. word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

  72. Therefore God's Word is a lamp as well as the light, and it

  73. leads us in the way of truth. And so Paul picks up on all that

  74. and says in First Thessalonians 5, listen, you are children of

  75. the day, you're children of the light.

  76. Therefore this is your witness, this is your testimony.

  77. Live this way because you are not in darkness anymore.

  78. In fact, the Bible says over in the book of Colossians, the 3rd

  79. chapter, these, these words, Colossians chapter 3, I'm sorry,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  80. class chapter one verse #13 For you rescued us from the domain

  81. of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of his beloved

  82. Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  83. You see, the unbeliever is in the domain of darkness.

  84. That's where Satan dwells. And therefore they are sons of

  85. disobedience, not sons of obedience.

  86. But when God saves you, He transfers you from that domain

  87. of darkness into the domain of His light, His truth.

  88. So therefore we walk as children of the light and children of the

  89. truth. And so Paul admonishes those in

  90. Thessalonica to live in like manner.

  91. And then he says, not only are you a witness, but you're,

  92. you're a watchman. You're to, you're to be alert,

  93. you're to be sober minded. You are, you are to be vigilant.

  94. And then he says you are a warrior.

  95. And therefore, because you're, you're a warrior, put on the,

  96. the breastplate of of faith and love and put on the, the helmet

  97. as a hope of, of your salvation. Such a such an important

  98. aspects. And he wants us to understand

  99. that, that we're involved in warfare.

  100. And this is how you as sons of the of the day and sons of the

  101. light live accordingly. Remember, in Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  102. 6, he talks about the armor of God.

  103. There he calls it the breastplate of righteousness.

  104. Here he calls it the breastplate of faith and love.

  105. There he called the helmet the helmet of salvation in Ephesians

  106. 6. Here in First Thessalonians 5,

  107. he calls the helmet the hope of salvation.

  108. They're both the same thing, just described in different

  109. ways. The the the breastplate of

  110. righteousness means that not my positional righteousness is in

  111. Christ, but the fact that I'm going to live practically a holy

  112. life. Well, how do I do that?

  113. By living in accordance with faith and love.

  114. The breastplate of faith and love.

  115. Faith is believing in what God has actually said, and because

  116. you believe in what God has actually said, you live in

  117. accordance to it. Love is living in admiration of

  118. who God is, because you love Him with all your heart, with all

  119. your soul, with all your mind, with all your strength.

  120. You want to obey the things that He says.

  121. So the breastplate of, of righteousness is the breastplate

  122. of, of love and the breast parade of, of faith.

  123. In other words, when we believe what God says, we walk by faith.

  124. We don't walk by sight. We believe in what God says, we

  125. don't believe in what we see. We believe in what God says

  126. because that's the truth. And so we live in accordance to

  127. the truth of the living God. Paul would say in first Timothy

  128. 6 verse #12 fight the good fight of faith.

  129. In secular 4 verse #8 he says I have fought the good fight.

  130. I've run the race right. But notice he calls the the

  131. fight always a good fight. It's a noble fight.

  132. Why? Because we're in warfare against

  133. Satan in the Kingdom of darkness and we are fighting for the

  134. truth of God's word, the gospel of God and the Kingdom of God.

  135. It is the noblest of all battles that were engaged in so many

  136. times we we wake up each day and don't realize that we're engaged

  137. in warfare, but we are every day is a battle.

  138. Why? Because we battle against the

  139. the forces of darkness. And so Paul says protect the

  140. most intimate part of your life. Protect your heart, put on the

  141. breastplate of faith and love. Remember Solomon says in

  142. Proverbs Sector 4, guard your heart for out of the flow all

  143. the issues of life. Proverbs 423 and how do we guard

  144. our heart by putting on the breastplate of faith and love.

  145. In other words, we believe what God says.

  146. You see, Satan is against you in all kinds of manners.

  147. And so he's going to attack you emotionally.

  148. He's going to attack you mentally.

  149. So Paul says put on the helmet as the as the hope of salvation.

  150. Why? Because he attacks the, the

  151. head, you're, you're thinking, he wants you to have doubts.

  152. He wants you to be discouraged. He, he wants you to be

  153. depressed. And Paul says, put on the helmet

  154. because that is your, your hope of salvation.

  155. You see, we, we were saved. We are, we're, we're justified.

  156. We are being sanctified. One day we will be glorified.

  157. And that is our hope. That is our assurance.

  158. That is our security. That's how we live our lives.

  159. We live our lives in anticipation of the

  160. glorification of our lives when we see him face to face.

  161. And Paul says when you do that, when you do that, you're able to

  162. ward off the attacks of the evil one.

  163. You'll live as children of the day, not children of the night.

  164. You will live as those who honor and glorify the name of the

  165. Lord. You will be alert, you will be

  166. sober, you won't be asleep. So be a warrior, be a watchman

  167. and be a witness. And they won't moves on to the

  168. next point. And that is, not only are you to

  169. be reminded and not only to be responsible, but you are to be

  170. relieved. Look what he says.

  171. He says these words in verse #8 But since we are of the day, let

  172. us be sober. Have you put on the breastplate

  173. of faith and love, and as a helmet with the hope of

  174. salvation? For God has not destined us for

  175. wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus

  176. Christ who died for us. So whether we are awake or

  177. sleep, alive or dead, we will live together with him.

  178. He says be relieved, for God has not destined you for wrath.

  179. Now we know that's not eternal wrath.

  180. Why? Because the context of First

  181. Thessalonians five is talking about the Day of the Lord.

  182. And the day of the Lord is called the day of God's fury or

  183. the day of God's wrath. You can read about it in

  184. Revelation 6 and Revelation 11, Revelation 16, Revelation 19,

  185. It's a day of God's wrath. It's a day of the Lord's fury.

  186. It's, it's that, it's that temporal time.

  187. We know that we're saved from eternal wrath because there is

  188. no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  189. And the wrath of God abides upon those who live in disobedience

  190. to the Lord God. We understand that.

  191. But he's talking about that temporal wrath, that day of the

  192. Lord, that tribulation. This is so important, why?

  193. Christ is the bridegroom. We are the bride, and the

  194. bridegroom does not want to subject the bride to the day of

  195. God's fury. He's not going to do that.

  196. That's why the Bible says in Revelation 3 verse #10 these

  197. words, I will keep thee from the hour of trial which will come

  198. upon the whole world to try them that dwell upon the earth.

  199. Revelation 310 so important. I'm going to protect you.

  200. I'm going to keep you out of that hour, that hour trial

  201. that's going to come upon the whole world, right?

  202. Specifically designed for those who dwell upon the earth.

  203. That phrase those who dwell upon the earth is used over 10 times

  204. in the Book of Revelation. And it always refers to people

  205. of the world, not geographically, but people of

  206. the world morally. That's how they live their

  207. lives. That is their home.

  208. That's what they love. They love the world.

  209. And the hour tribulation is designed for the unbeliever, not

  210. the believer. It's going to come upon the

  211. whole world, those who dwell upon the earth.

  212. And the Lord says, I'm going to keep you from that hour.

  213. I'm going to protect you from that hour.

  214. Paul says here in First Thessalonians 5, listen, God has

  215. not destined you for wrath. He's not destined you for

  216. judgement. He's destined you for joy to be

  217. with Jesus forever. And that's what he says.

  218. It says this is just so wonderful.

  219. Listen, listen how he says it. He says that Jesus Christ verse

  220. 10 who died for us that whether we are awake or asleep we will

  221. live together with him. Paul says he died for us.

  222. He died for us over in Galatians chapter one.

  223. This is how he says it Galatians one verse 3.

  224. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus

  225. Christ, who gave himself for our sins so that he might rescue us

  226. from this present evil age according to the will of our God

  227. and Father, to whom he or to whom be the glory forevermore,

  228. Amen. He rescued us, He delivered us,

  229. He saved us. Paul says he died for us.

  230. And why did he do that? So that we could be with him.

  231. We could be with him earlier. Paul says in chapter 4 these

  232. words, and so shall we always be with the Lord for 17 of chapter

  233. 4. That's the essence of heaven.

  234. Heaven is a place. Heaven is a, a specific place,

  235. but it's more than just a place. Heaven is the presence of the

  236. living God. We, we, we tend to forget about

  237. that and we forget about what's going to happen when we get to

  238. heaven. We're always wondering, well,

  239. when we get there, what are we going to do when we get there?

  240. It's not about what you're going to do when you get there.

  241. It's about who you're going to see when you get there.

  242. And so many times because we, we think from an earthly

  243. perspective that when we get to heaven, we're going to see our

  244. our father or our mother or our brother or our sister, or, or

  245. maybe John MacArthur's going to see RC Sprole or, or Charles

  246. Spurgeon. You know what?

  247. You're going to see them, but that's not your purpose for

  248. going. You're not going to see them.

  249. You're going to see the Lord. You're going to be with the

  250. Lord. That's the most important thing.

  251. We forget that a glorified body, a perfect body dwelling in

  252. perfect righteousness does not have the same relationships it

  253. did while on earth, because every relationship that you have

  254. is tainted with sin. But in heaven there is no sin.

  255. Everything is perfect. There is no memory of what takes

  256. place on earth, in heaven. In hell, you have all the memory

  257. of what takes place on earth. That's why there's weeping and

  258. gnashing of teeth. But in heaven there is no memory

  259. of what happens on earth. Why?

  260. Because everything is new. There is no pain, there is no

  261. sorrow. There'd be so much sorrow if we

  262. remembered what happened on earth.

  263. But in glory, it's all about the Lord.

  264. It's all about being with the Lord.

  265. Think about this. John MacArthur wakes up in glory

  266. on on on Monday evening. He dies and and closes his eyes

  267. and wakes up in the presence of the living God.

  268. How great is that? That's what heaven is.

  269. It's the presence of God. To be in his presence is the

  270. hope and joy of all of our lives.

  271. And Paul knew that and we will be with him.

  272. He wants to encourage him that way.

  273. He wants to motivate in that way.

  274. When we die, whether we wake or whether we're asleep, when

  275. Christ comes again, we will be with him.

  276. That's the prize, that's the reward, that's the joy, that's

  277. the excitement. Yeah, there are crowns, but

  278. those crowns will be cast at the feet of the Lamb, at the feet of

  279. the Lord. Why?

  280. Because the only reason we have a crown is because of what

  281. Christ has done in our lives. And so we're just going to give

  282. him back to him because he receives all the glory and all

  283. the honor and all the praise. And Paul says God is not

  284. destined us for wrath. Why?

  285. Because he delivered us. He saved us.

  286. He rescued us so that whether we wake or sleep, that one day we

  287. will be with him. That's the greatest of all

  288. relief, knowing that Christ in his presence is my destiny.

  289. And then he says, I want you to be reliable.

  290. Verse 11. Therefore, encourage one another

  291. and build up one another just as you also are doing.

  292. Be reliable to be an encourager. Be reliable to, to edify others,

  293. to build them up to, to, to encourage them to have the

  294. strength and, and the stability that they need each and every

  295. day. And you're going to do that

  296. through the words that I've given to you.

  297. I want you to understand that these words are so important

  298. that you are to be engaged not in, in finding flaws in one

  299. another, but building up one another.

  300. Time is short. Life is so short.

  301. We only have this life before us and Paul says in the short

  302. amount of time that you have encourage one another, build up

  303. one another. That's why the right of Hebrew

  304. says don't forsake this so many of yourselves together.

  305. Why as you see the day approaching, the day of what the

  306. day of Christ that is coming, but to encourage one another, to

  307. stimulate one another to love and good deeds.

  308. That's why we gathered together to to be involved in each

  309. other's lives, to to motivate one another to move each other

  310. on to action. And then that's what that's what

  311. Paul is saying here in First Thessalonians chapter 5.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  312. And then he's going to embark on the very nick section and

  313. explain to you how you encourage and how you edify the body.

  314. Listen to what he says. He says these words in verse 12.

  315. But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who

  316. diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the

  317. Lord, and give you instruction, and that you esteem them very

  318. highly in love because of their work.

  319. Live in peace with one another. We urge you, brethren, admonish

  320. the unruly, encourage the faint hearted, help the weak.

  321. Be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another

  322. with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good

  323. for one another and for all people.

  324. Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.

  325. In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in

  326. Christ Jesus concerning you. That's how you encourage and

  327. build up one another. And so next week we'll we'll go

  328. into those verses and explain to you exactly how God wants to use

  329. each of us and each other's lives.

  330. But this is so important as to living the model life.

  331. Paul says listen in chapter 4. This is the will of God.

  332. Even your sanctification that you abstain from sexual

  333. immorality, you want to live a model life, live a life of

  334. abstinence. And then he says if you want to

  335. live a life, a model life, live a life of aspiration to loving

  336. abundantly and living appropriately.

  337. Verses 9 to 12 of chapter 4. And then he says, live a life of

  338. anticipation as to the day of Christ.

  339. He's coming again. Because one day the Lord will

  340. descend from heaven with a shout and with the voice of the

  341. Archangel, and the dead in Christ will rise 1st.

  342. And then we who are alive and remain shall be cut up together

  343. with them in the air. And so shall we ever be with the

  344. Lord. Live in anticipation of that

  345. event because it's a nixed event on God's prophetic calendar.

  346. And all the while, live a life of alertness.

  347. You're going to be sober. You're going to be vigilant.

  348. You're going to be a warrior, a watchman.

  349. You're going to be a witness. Why?

  350. Because you dwell among the people of the night need to be a

  351. testimony to them and as you do be an encouragement to one

  352. another and build up one another as you are doing.

  353. That's just so great because Paul recognizes the fact that

  354. they're already doing that. He says I want you to excel even

  355. all the more in doing that as you seek to honor the Lord.

  356. That's the model life and trust that God will give us the grace

  357. to live for the glory and honor of his name.

  358. Let's pray together. Father, we thank you for today.

  359. We thank you for all that you do.

  360. We thank you, Lord, that we can gather together to praise your

  361. glorious name. We thank you, Lord, that you're

  362. our God. And I pray Lord, for for us as a

  363. church, the Lord, we would be the kind of people that live a

  364. model life, that live the kind of life that brings glory and

  365. honor to your name, that lives the kind of life that truly

  366. wants to put you above ourselves, the kind of life that

  367. really wants to honor others above ourselves.

  368. And that, Lord, we would truly live in anticipation of your

  369. coming. Again, Lord, you are coming.

  370. We know it's going to be soon. We just want it to be even

  371. sooner than we can imagine. We pray that it be today, if not

  372. today, tomorrow. But Father, we know that when

  373. you come, we will be with you. Our prayer, Lord, is that if

  374. there's someone here today who does not know that when they die

  375. they'll be with you, the Lord you would burden their heart

  376. that they would know to confess their sin, to repent and turn

  377. from their evil ways. Give your life to the living God

  378. and follow you in obedience for the rest of their lives.

  379. Lord, we love you. Thank you for our time together.

  380. May this week be the greatest of all weeks because we want to

  381. live it for your glory in Jesus name, Amen.
