Romans 10:1-10 | Confess & Believe and you will be Saved.

We're going to look at a text that I, I want to encourage us

dads with like, I don't want you to feel like man, Ricky, like

coming at me and I'm like, no, no, like this is going to be

encouraging to us as men, right? Because when we understand what

the gospel is, we understand the implications of the gospel and

we understand how great it is, man, it should charge our hearts

and our lives to be like, man, I want to leave my family this way

because this is awesome. This is great stuff, right?

So my prayer for you today is that you leave here encouraged.

You leave here like hyped up, ready to go and ready to go and

pour into your family because this, this, this text is just

amazing. This text that Paul shows us.

So let me pray for us. And then we're going to dive

into Romans chapter 10. So Jesus, thank you for today.

Jesus, thank you because you're good to us.

Father, I pray that you speak to us through your word.

I pray, Lord, that we see Christ in this.

And Lord, I pray that our hearts are full of your spirit as we

walk out of here today. Lord, help us to be great dads.

Help us to be great men, Lord, and help us to lead our families

well. So Jesus, speak to us this

morning. And your name we pray, Amen.

So let's go Romans chapter 10. So the key verses that we're

Romans 10 · chapter mention

going to look at is verse 9 and 10.

But like I said, we got we got to walk through it.

We got to get to that that place.

So we know that Paul is the one who wrote the book of Romans and

Paul is called to share the gospel with the Gentiles.

So who are the Gentiles? Everybody that's not a Jew.

So pretty much everybody else. So Paul is called to share the

gospel with the Gentiles, but there's still something in him

where he wants to make sure that he ministers to the Jewish

people as well or the Israelites.

And he starts in verse 1. He says, brothers and sisters,

my hearts desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that

they may be saved. Pretty simple.

Who is he talking to? His brothers and sisters who are

the brothers and sisters, those who believe in Christ.

So he's talking to the church, he's talking to the believers

and he's premising this because he's going to go in on some of

their practices. And, and Paul is like, listen, I

want you to understand something before I say all this.

My desire is that they be saved. My desire is not to win an

argument. My desire is not to prove them

wrong. My desire is not to belittle

people. My desire is for them to be

saved. And listen, church, our desire

as City Post Church is for Haltom City in Fort Worth and

Texas to be saved. That's our heartbeat.

That's why we do what we do. That's why we build equipped and

send. That's why we pray.

That's why we go on missions like this is our heartbeat.

This is why we do this. It is to know Christ and make

him known. Our desire, our heartbeat is so

that people get to know Jesus. Paul's calling as an apostle

disciple is to the Gentiles, but he continually pleads to God for

Israel. Why?

So that they could be saved. Now Paul's going to show us like

what he's seen. So look at verse 2.

Because I think some of us could relate to this.

For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God.

And their zeal is not based on knowledge.

Since they did not, they did not know the righteousness of God

and sought to establish their own.

They did not submit to God's righteousness, for Christ is the

culmination of the law. So that way everyone has an

opportunity to attain the righteousness given by God.

So what Paul is noticing, he's like man, like I see they're

super zealous for God. They're all about that life.

They're all about his law and they're all about the

traditions. Like they're they're not quiet

about it. They're zealous about it, but

their zeal is not based out of knowledge, man.

So growing up in college, I had this roommate, me and Ernie had

this roommate and, and we were hanging out and, and he's a big

like soccer fan balloon Pierre football, right?

Like he, he loves soccer. But the problem is I like we

watch American football and I remember it was Monday Night

Football. We all get home from work, we're

all eating and it was the Patriots versus the Cowboys on

Monday night. And we're watching it and we

look at our roommate and he is yelling at the TV.

I was like, I've never seen you watch a, I've never seen you

cheer for any football team before.

And he's like, whoa, he is going at it.

But I started noticing I was like, bro, you're yelling at the

wrong time. So every time Dallas had the

ball, he was like, yeah, wow. And I was like, it was, it was

third and 13. And they ran and got 2 yards.

Why are we cheering? That's a terrible play call.

And then he's like yelling and then and then also like I see

like broken plays and and like bad defense and he's like go

Dallas and I'm like, they're they're suck right now.

You see, like he what he was excited about was that at work,

some of his coworkers are football fans and and now like

he gets to talk and enjoy those things with them.

You see, like his zeal for the game was for the team, but he

didn't have knowledge of the game.

He's just yelling for no reason. And what Paul is trying to tell

us is that the Israelites are zealous for God, but it's coming

out of traditionalism. It's coming out of, hey, I'm

born into this, so I'm going to do it anyway.

But you have no knowledge of what you're doing.

You're just going with it. I've seen this 100 times.

Like, what are you shouting for? Because everybody else is doing

it. And Paul is like man, they're

passionate man. They're, they have a lot of

zeal, but their zeal is not based out of the knowledge of

Christ in his word. Their zeal is based out of their

own righteousness. And that's what we see in verse

3. The problem is they didn't, they

don't know what they're doing. They have no idea.

Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought

to establish their own, they did not submit to God's

righteousness. So what they're doing is that

they're taking the law and they're building themselves out

of that law and they're ignorant to the knowledge of what the

word of God says. So they're following the law,

but they don't understand that the law is to point them to the

Messiah. It's not I do, I do, I do so God

will love me. No, it's like, that's not what

the law is. The law is like, listen, you

can't do, you can't do, you can't do.

That's why God loves you. I'm going to send Jesus.

So they're they're out of it. And listen, we deal with this

too. And what I've realized is that

when you have zeal without knowledge, you get ignorance.

When you're excited about something but you don't have the

knowledge of it, you become ignorant.

Like you're just doing it just because.

And for many of us, we do things out of ignorance because you

have no idea why everybody else is doing it, but you're

passionate about it. It's like we see a lot of

arguments. Some people think the louder I

am, I guess I'm going to win. No, because what's coming out of

your mouth is nonsense. But then when you have ignorance

with zeal, you get conformity. So whenever you're ignorant

about some and then you're also super excited, you end up

conforming to the thing that is driving you because you don't

have the knowledge for it. And what that was happening with

the Israelites is that they had the law of God and they were

trying to follow it. And they, they, they were adding

their own little like the Pharisees and the Sadducees and

the religious leaders were adding their own little two or

three PowerPoints to God's law. And they ended up conforming to

not just the culture, but also to the law.

So it became a self based righteousness.

And then of course you know they because they conformed to it,

it's like they became gatekeepers to it.

You weren't born an Israelite, so God's people are only the

Jewish people. You are not following God's law,

so you can't have a relationship with God.

And they became like these gatekeepers where they were

trying to push everybody else out.

And what Paul's argument is, is that because righteousness is

through faith in him, it's for everybody, not just y'all.

So we know that the gospel is for every single person.

So it has to be this belief. Now what?

What is Christ? In verse 4 it says Christ is the

culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for

everyone who believes that word. Culmination in the Greek

translates. A better translation is

fulfillment or end it. Also, we also see that same word

for termination. So Christ is the fulfillment of

the law. What's the fulfillment of the

law mean? What does that mean when when he

talks about that? Well, Paul means that the belief

in Christ as Lord and Savior ends the sinner's futile quest

for a righteousness through his imperfect attempts to save

himself. So when Christ becomes the

fulfillment of the law, that stops this whole self

righteousness. There is this whole thing of

like, I got to figure out a way to become right with God.

So man, that's a great thing because in order for us to

fulfill the law, we got to do it perfectly.

So yeah, you could be like, well, Rick, I'd do ABC, but

yeah, but you didn't do DAFGHIJKLMLOP.

Like you didn't do any of all that other stuff.

So if you're going to fulfill the law, you better do the whole

thing. And it's not easy.

It's actually impossible. And that's why Jesus came to be

the fulfillment of the law. So we see that in verse 5 S.

Go to verse 5. So my paper got all wet.

It's all smudged. All right.

So Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the

law. A person who does these things

will live by them. What is So what Paul is doing is

Paul is about to start throwing the law at the Israelites to

help them understand. Listen, you guys study the books

of the law, the Torah, which is Genesis through Deuteronomy, the

first five books written by Moses.

So Paul is going to use God's word to prove God's word.

And what he does, he's telling them he's like, listen, Moses

wrote about this. The person who does these things

will live by them. So if you're going to follow the

law, great, but you better do it perfectly.

You can't be missing. You can't be picking and

choosing, which is really difficult.

And then look at verse 6. So verse six and seven, Paul is

using what we call personification.

So he's treating righteousness as though it was a person.

And then he quotes Deuteronomy chapter 30 here.

Man, you guys should read Deuteronomy 30.

Man, that, that's a, it's an incredible chapter.

It's awesome. He's quoting Deuteronomy 30

here. And pretty much the point he's

getting to is that righteousness is by faith and it does not

require some impossible odyssey or some crazy journey for you to

find it. You don't have to go with Aaron

Rodgers and do ayahuasca for days in order for you to find

truth. He's right.

It's right here. It's in the word He's saying.

It's, it's right in front of us. God has given it to us.

He's like man, like righteousness by faith.

This is what it is. You don't have to go look

throughout the universe and try to make sense of it all.

He's telling us where it is. So he uses Deuteronomy 3012 to

point it out and then verse 8. But what does it say?

The word is near you. It is in your mouth and in your

heart. That is the message concerning

faith that we proclaim because it has to be by faith.

Then I was like, man, why does Paul use Deuteronomy 30?

This is so interesting. So I'm going to go ahead and

read it if you if you guys want to look it up or put it in your

scroll through it. Deuteronomy chapter 30.

I'm going to start on verse 8 and this is what it says.

Deuteronomy 30 verse 8 If you obey the Lord your God and keep

Deuteronomy 30:8

his commands and decrees that are written in the book of the

law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with

all your with all your soul. Verse 11 Now what I'm commanding

you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

It is up in heaven, so that you have to ask who will ascend into

heaven to get it or proclaim it to us so we may obey it.

Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask who will

cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so that we may

obey it. No, the word is near you, it is

in your mouth and it is in your heart, so that way you may obey

it. Man this passage is crazy.

A lot of like Word of Faith churches use this because we say

a lot of these words like man, God is for us and he's going to

prosper us. And you're the head and not the

tail. And and you you quote all these

promises, but there's a clause and the promises and it's a

found in verse 10. All of that stuff is real.

Only a verse 10 is activated. What does verse 10 say if you

obey? If you obey the Lord your God

and keep his commandments and decrees that are written in the

book of the law, and you turn to the Lord your God with all your

heart and with all your soul. Why is this such a big message

and why is faith so important? Because if I truly believe this,

so if God is going to is for me and God's going to prosper in my

hand and God's going to take good care of me, but I am not in

His law and I'm not in his decrees, but yet he still

blesses me. Does that make him a liar?

Or what if I follow his laws and I follow his decrees, but God's

will for my life looks way different than what I what I'm

thinking about. And like the way that I want to

prosper is not the way that God has prosperity in my life.

Does that make God a liar? You see, guys, there's a lot of

back and forth here. And what we see here is like,

man, if you obey the Lord, if you put your faith in him,

pretty much what they're saying, He's going to take care of you.

And listen, the greatest prosperity has nothing to do

with materialistic things. The greatest prosperity is that

He forgives us of our sins. He gives you a new heart.

He takes your heart of stone and gives your heart of flesh.

And as you walk in Christ, he directs your steps and he takes

care of you and he puts you in where you need to be.

And listen, God is a God who provides, and God is with us if

you obey. Now, what's difficult about why

is faith so important? And This is why Christ came,

because without Jesus, then you're going to have to do

everything the law says in order to please a holy and righteous

God. And that's impossible.

And that's exactly what was happening with the Israelites.

But with Jesus, when we put our faith in him, we're covered by

his grace and we're justified. We're covered by his mercy.

So even when we fail and even when we mess things up and even

when we sin, we're covered by his grace and mercy if we ask

for forgiveness. And when we ask for forgiveness,

he restores us and he continues to walk with us.

So when we sin, God's like, I'm out.

No, not with Jesus. When we sin, God says, I forgive

you, and I'm going to keep walking with you, and I'm going

to keep prospering your hand, and I'm going to keep going

forward with you. And that's the promise that we

see in Deuteronomy chapter 30. So now it gets to the crazy

Deuteronomy 30 · chapter mention

part. So this is what Paul saying in

verse 8. But what does it say?

So Paul breaks this thing down. What does this say?

He says that the word is near you.

It is in your mouth and in your heart.

That is the message concerning the faith that we proclaim.

Now He's going to tell us, what is that message of faith that we

proclaim? Verse 9, if you confess with

your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God

raised him from the dead, you will be saved because that's the

message. That's what we contain.

Then verse 10, for it is with your heart that you believe and

are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your

faith and are saved. So what does verse 9 even mean?

Let's walk this thing down. If you confess with your mouth.

This is a verse that's really important for us to understand

because the gospel requires a few things.

You got to confess and you got to believe.

Confession is not a simple acknowledgement that you know

Jesus or you know God or that Jesus is the Lord of the

universe. Guess what?

Based off of James 219. The demons know this.

Even the devil claims that Jesus is the Lord of the universe and

they submit to him. So pure acknowledgement doesn't

really do anything and Paul is not throwing that in there.

Like confession means something so much more deeper.

It's a deeper conviction without reservation.

The phrase includes 3 things, so I'll put them on the screen.

Whenever you say I confess that Jesus is Lord, what you're

claiming are these three things. Number one, you're claiming that

you are repentant of your sin. So if I say Jesus is Lord of my

life, what you're truly saying is that I'm repentant of my sin,

I'm trusting in Jesus for salvation, and I am submitting

to him as Lord. It's not a near acknowledgement,

like, yeah, I believe in Jesus. No, it's something deeper than

that. And we see this too, like Paul

is using the word confession for a reason.

Listen, the Greek word for confession actually means to be

in agreement with someone. So what you're Paul is saying is

that when I confess that Jesus is Lord, I am an I'm in

agreement with someone, and that someone is God the Father.

And that means that I'm agreeing with what God the Father is

saying about his Son, and then he, what he's saying about the

Messiah. So the Father's declaration that

Jesus is the savior of the world, if I say I'm confessing

that Jesus, Lord, I am in agreeance with the Father, what

he says about the Son, everything.

How do we know what the Father says about the Son?

We have his word. So if I confess Jesus, that

means that I'm agreeing with every single thing that God's

Word says about Jesus. You cannot confess Jesus and

have discrepancies about his Word.

That's not how that flows, right?

So you have to believe that there's another.

Go ahead and put the second definition.

So when we talk about confess what we what what it means when

I say I confess that Jesus Lord, I am recognizing that Jesus is

God, that he is the Messiah, and that his work on the cross is

the only way salvation is made. So whenever Paul says confess

with your mouth, you have to proclaim it and remember he says

confess that with your mouth that Jesus is Lord.

Remember the Greek word curious what you're saying is not Jesus

is Lord, it's Jesus is my Lord. Jesus is is Yahweh my Adonai,

right? Like so you're claiming that he

belongs to you. It's almost like you're saying

like Jesus is the king, Jesus is the emperor.

He takes the supreme place in my life.

That's what you're saying whenever you say I confess that

Jesus is Lord. What does that look like, Rick?

How do I know? I'm just not like just giving,

like I'm just talking. There's evidence of someone who

confesses that Jesus is Lord. Jesus is real clear.

And 1st John two and six, that if you claim to walk with me,

then you must obey my commands. You do what I say easy.

You know, one of my, a lot of people know this.

I love live music. I love going to shows, I love

going to concerts. And a few months ago, or

actually it was probably like a year or two ago, I have a bucket

list of people I want to see, like a bands I wanted to see.

So I was checking off the bucket list.

Things are going great. And then I discovered that Pearl

Jam was coming to Dickey's Arena and I'm like, bro, I'm a little

bit older. I have a little bit better job.

I think I could afford these tickets like, and if not, Oh

well, the kids are going to have to go without juice for a month,

whatever, right? I was like, I want to go see

Pearl Jam. So I threw my name in the

lottery. And here's the thing, Pearl Jam,

when they come, every show gets sold out within minutes.

So you got to throw your name in this lottery to get those

tickets. If not, you're going to have to

buy the pre sale, which they're marked up like four or five

times. So I threw it in, they're doing

2 shows, one on Wednesday, one on Friday.

And I threw my name and I got tickets.

I was like, yo, this is this is crazy, this is awesome.

And then I was like, who am I going to take?

Like man, I need somebody that's going to appreciate this.

So Rach, you can't come right? So I was like, I was like Rach

don't care nothing about Pearl Jam bro.

And she told me too. So I was like, I need to so man,

I took John. So, you know, because we like

live music and man like so we went and it was fantastic.

Now here's the thing, what makes a venue sold out?

You see, Dickey's Arena holds 18,000 seats.

That show held 18,000 seats. That means that 18,000 tickets

had to be sold in order for Dickey's Arena to become sold

out. Now, if 17,999 seats were sold,

it would not be sold out because there's still one seat up for

grabs. If anything more than 18,000

seats are sold, then the Fire Marshall could come in and shut

the thing down. You see, in order for you to be

sold out, every single seat must be sold in your heart.

So whenever I say Jesus is the Lord of my life, He is the

supreme Emperor. He is the King of my life.

That means that Jesus has all 18,000 seats sold in my heart.

There's not one seat that's available to Him because if one

seats available, that means that I'm saving it for somebody else

or something else. You've got to be fully in, fully

committed, fully sold out to Christ.

And when you are fully committed and fully sold out to Christ,

then you could say Jesus is the Lord of my life.

He has every aspect of my life and He has every seat in my

heart taken. And my question to you is like,

do you have seats that are not taken in your heart?

What are you holding on to that you have not surrendered to

Christ yet in order for you to be completely sold out to him?

And for some of us, it's our future.

Some of us, it's relationships, man, we could go down the line.

We're all different. But my prayers today that if you

confess, Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord of

all, that means that every single seat of my heart is taken

by him and he has to have it. So that's what confession makes.

But then there's also another component.

You also got to believe. You also got to believe.

You know, there's a saying that says, man, the distance between

heaven and earth is 18 inches between your mind and your

heart. So yeah, I could confess

something, but if I don't believe it, and what the Bible

says, and we'll do this point #1 is that in order for you to have

salvation, in order for you to have righteousness, you have to

believe and you have to confess. They go together.

You could confess something and not believe it.

Listen, I've apologized for stuff.

I don't even know why I apologize for.

I confessed. I'm sorry.

But deep down inside, I'm like, I have no idea for what.

Who cares? It's keeping the peace.

It doesn't matter. But you see with Christ, it's

like I'm confessing to him. And I know deep down inside I

believe in faith that he truly is God.

And Paul is saying you need both of them because in verse 10, it

is with your heart that you believe and are justified.

And it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and you

are saved. So Paul lays out the gospel

nicely. And you know what's so

scandalous about this? How easy it is.

So on one side you have the Israelites and the Jews.

They're like, you got to do all these things and you make sure

you follow my that's going to drive you crazy.

How do I get right with God? Believe and confess?

And I believe that some of the Israelites had an issue with

that. That's that's way too easy.

Like if I believe and I and I put my faith in him, he's going

to forgive me and I'm able to be right with God and some of the

religious leaders like out of your mind and everybody gets to

do that. And Paul's like, yes, everybody,

because look what it says in verse 11 as scriptures say,

anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame because

there's no difference between Jew and Gentile.

The same Lord is the Lord of all, and richly blesses all who

call on him, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

will be saved. I love that guys.

The gospel is for all people. Galatians 328 There is neither,

nor Jew, nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor their male

or female and female. You are all one in Christ.

Paul even quotes Joel 232 which talks about how the salvation is

available for all people, all races and all nations.

Guys, everyone is able to come to Christ.

That's why City Post, we invite everybody.

Come as you are man, who who cares what you look like?

Because we want you to know Christ.

This ain't going to change. We want you to know him, man.

We want you to understand that he loves you.

And then we end with this. Paul's like, man, everyone is

made available. It's not about following the

law. It's not about all that stuff.

Listen, we do love the law of God, but we follow the law of

God because we have been redeemed, not because we want

redemption, because we love his law.

And the Israelites were like, Nah, they're adding stuff to it.

Can you imagine if we did that at this church and say, man,

only people come in this church can't have tattoos.

It was like 5 people left, right?

But listen, that don't matter. That's who you are, man.

Come on in. And then look at last last

couple verses when we done. How then can they call on the

1:00 they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the

one whom they've not heard? And how can they hear without

someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless

they are sent as it is written? How beautiful are the feet of

those who bring the good news? Which leads me to my Third

Point. Listen, the good news.

The Gospel is to be proclaimed. It's to be spoken, it's to be

said. The Gospel has to be talked.

I know a lot of people like to quote Francis of Assisi and say

share the Gospel. And if you need to use words,

the people that quote that don't use words.

But what we see in Scripture is that the good news has to be

proclaimed. Now, some of y'all like, well,

Ricky, I'm not a preacher. The word preaching in the Greek

actually just means a proclamation.

That just means that you need to say it out loud.

So you're right, you're not a preacher.

And thank God that we don't have a bunch of preachers, but we do

have a lot of people who are able to talk.

So wherever you go, whether it's work, school, family, whatever

it is, you need to proclaim the good news of the gospel, which

is confess and believe, not do and try.

It's confess and believe you're able to proclaim it.

And this leads to my last point. So go to #4 for me.

So if the gospel is to be proclaimed, then that means that

we are to move forward. We're to move forward.

Why does Paul end it with how beautiful are the feet of those

who bring the good news? So we see this in verse 15.

Paul uses feet as a descriptor to constantly move forward.

That's why he's using it. Every father got a pair of

socks. This was not something that was

done by accident. It was not a stylistic thing,

but it was there's, there's a purpose for socks.

So I started doing a little bit of research and I was like,

what's up with socks? We actually could trace socks

back to the prehistoric age, 5000 BC Cavemen would wrap their

feet in something so that way they would fight frostbite and

other diseases. 300 to 500 AD the Egyptians actually perfected

socks. They actually called them feet

bags. True story.

The Romans would take leather wraps and they would wrap their

feet in order for them to be able to fight better and to

eliminate cuts and bruises and disease.

Then I started thinking like, man, this Ephesians 615.

Paul uses the imagery of a soldier sandals to represent the

readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Guys, the reason why we focus on our feet is not to be passive.

The reason we focus on our feet is to move forward.

Dads, listen to me. The most dangerous thing you

could do is become a passive individual and you get home and

you shut down. Your role as a father is not

just to provide for your family. Your role as a father is also to

pass to your family and protect your family and be a priest in

the home for your family. Socks, cover your feet.

It's a covering. Listen, your feet, the feet.

The reason why your feet are beautiful is because you're

taking the good news and they're covered by the Holy Spirit to

move forward in my prayer for you today, dads, is that you

take this message of believe and confess to your home first to

your family. You raise your kids in His word.

You're not a tyrant about it, but you lead by example.

Kids, you love them. You teach them the gospel.

When you're exhausted and you're dog tired and you don't want to

do anything, you ask the Holy Spirit for some help and you

play on the floor with your kids.

We got to be. Present we got.

To stop being passive and we got to stop giving our kids devices

so that way they leave you alone.

And I just felt this in my. Spirit, like the Holy Spirit,

has been convicting me, like me and my family.

So use the covering that. God has given you with the Holy

Spirit and push the gospel forward because blessed are

those. Blessed is defeat for those who

proclaim the good news of the gospel.

Confess with your mouth, believe in your heart.

You will be saved. And we're going to go to.

Misrom. There's a team of six of us, and

what we're going to do is as the band plays the final worship

song, I'm going to ask the church to get a little bit

involved and we're going to stand and worship together.

But I want to ask you as a church, as the song is playing,

to come and pray over our participants.

What we see in the scripture is the laying of hands whenever

people are sent out. And as City Post Church, we're

not just traveling to Mizzaram. All six of us.
