We back My name is Hector and I'm here with.

Is this Pastor Ricky? How is everybody doing?

And we're back with another episode of Build Equips, and

it's the title of the podcast, but most importantly, it's the

Michigan. Of church, That's right.

A little recap from the haymakers the Holy Spirit was

giving us. On Sunday, bro.

That living in the Spirit sermon was one that I know I sorely

needed. So you know that that was a, it

was a powerful sermon to prepare for when you really dig into the

Holy Spirit. And even for myself, like, if

we're just being honest, because I've had, I've had people tell

me like as a pastor, they're like, man, like we just would

like a church that's more spirited or we don't feel the

Holy Spirit here. Or so when you hear people say

stuff like that, it kind of tends to play games.

And I mean it, it plays with your mind a little bit.

And, and I know like I got to a place where I was, I was like,

man, am I not like, am I disconnected?

Am I like, because our church isn't like jumping and, and all

that stuff that people want to see and, and like what, like, am

I doing something wrong? And I, and I'll be honest,

that's something I struggled with for a while.

So when you start to like study the Holy Spirit and when you

start like jumping in God's word, it's like, no, that's not,

that's not the purpose of it, you know, And so it was, it was

almost like preaching to myself a little bit like, or a lot of

bit man preaching to myself and just talking about what does it

look like to live in the spirit? And then, you know, we, we have

the gifts of the spirit where we haven't even like scratched the

surface and that yet, you know, so we haven't even talked about

healing and and tongues and you know, languages like we haven't,

we haven't talked any about on any of that stuff yet.

But I think, like I said, before you could, Ron, you got to be

able to walk and The Walking is understanding.

Was the, you know, Elohim, Yeah, the Holy Spirit of God.

Like, you know what? What does that mean for us?

So yeah, just throwing that out there.

Absolutely, man. And it was one of those, for me

that was reminiscent of a conversation we had after a

sermon at the beginning of the year.

Bro, it's like it's just a different level like like

you're, you're at you're, you're deeper in that relationship with

the Lord and the Holy Spirit, bro.

And it's coming through in the messages, right?

So this time I want to encourage you in and you know El Espirito

Santos was moving at the end with.

The. Spanish and the, the invitation

bro, like that was, that was something that was awesome to

experience. You know, man, cuz we, we see

who our neighbors are, we've seen them at the trunk or

treats. We've seen them come to

different events and that is who our church has been planted in

the midst of man. So it's awesome to see the Holy

Spirit engaging them. As well.

And, you know, like something I noticed on Sunday, you know, I

was having a conversation with my sister about this.

I felt like after the sermon, there was like a sigh of relief.

Like I, I, I don't know, like I felt this like, I feel like, you

know, our church, every church has its own personality.

Every church has its own vibe. Every church has its own style.

And what makes a church a church is the message of the gospel.

Everything else can be learned. Everything else could be

cultural. Everything else can be a

subjective. Like the way Eric leads worship,

you know, he, he sings, that's who he is.

He's not up there yelling at people, telling everybody get

lit with it and jumping around. But it's not wrong.

It's just not who he is, you know, and doesn't mean that the

Holy Spirit is not present. And that's, I think that's kind

of where a lot of especially in the Latino culture and you know,

also like in the Puerto Rican culture, like, like people were

a little bit more like when I say spirited, it's like they're

just, they're more excited about things.

But there's also a, the cultural narrative that if you don't do

those things, then like the church, like the Spirit's not in

the church. And that's not what Paul shows

us. You know, so in Romans 8, Paul's

like, no, no, no, no, like if you walk with Christ, he has a

spirit in you. So you're that that's a spirit

filled church. And that's the narrative that we

got to get over. It's like, it's not about what

what you would look like. It's like the fruit that you're

bearing. And that's, that's a whole

another. Yeah, that's one of the

conversation. I said, like, I know a lot of

people who could run around, shout, yell, but yeah, like

their marriages are trash and they're living in sin and like

they struggle and like their families are wrecked.

And you know, like, so we, we have to be careful that you

don't equate certain things like, let's just stick to God's

word. And like I said, like, man, I'm,

I'm laid back dude, too, man. Like, so for you to say, well,

Ricky, you don't yell, you must not have the spirit or you're

not operating in the spirit. And I'm like, yeah, man, I get

that. But that's not who God made me.

So I'm going to operate and who God made me, you know.

So anyway, off the soapbox, I just want to throw it out there.

And I don't know, like the Lord was just working on me, you

know, and I just felt like it was coming.

And on Sunday, I, I don't know. I just felt like a huge sigh of

relief from a lot of people, you know, like, culturally, right.

Right. Yeah.

So whatever. But whatever side you land on, I

just felt like people just felt validated.

Like, OK, I am a believer. You know, like that's yeah, man.

And that's that's what we're we're called to do is to point

people to Christ. That's it.

Yeah, you know, no matter what they look like, no matter what

their worship styles like, no matter, you know, as long as

we're down with Jesus, bro. That's right.

Like everything. Else, right?

The gospel's got to be the central message, and then

everything else will will come about.

That's so true. And everything else is just it's

just a little extra seasoning. That's right.

That's just a song. Yeah, that's it.

Yeah, but but on that topic of pointing people to Christ,

before we started recording you, you mentioned the reference from

first John, if you want to share that.

Of course, this is something I, I mentioned on Sunday.

You know, when we, when we talk about the Holy Spirit and we, we

talk about like what the Holy Spirit does.

And you know what the point is, You know, first John chapter 5,

1 John 5 · chapter mention

you know, verse 6-7 and eight, you know, it says this is the

one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, He did not come by

by water only, but by water and blood.

And it is the Spirit who testifies because the Spirit is

the truth. For there are three that

testify, the Spirit, the water and the blood and the three are

in agreement. So we accept human testimony,

but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of

God which he has given about his Son.

And whoever believes in the Son of God accepts that testimony.

You know, So what we see in the Scriptures, like the Holy

Spirit, everything about the Holy Spirit is about pointing

people to Jesus. So if you're living in the

Spirit, then you should talk a lot about Jesus, you know, and

it's not, it's good to have a healthy, a healthy relationship

or a healthy view of theology where you talk about the Father,

the Son, and the Holy Spirit, not one more than the other, but

all of it leads to Christ. So you talk about the Father.

Well, Jesus says, well, if you want to know what the Father's

like, come on, you look at me. But then when you talk about the

Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is pointing everybody to the Son.

You know, so it they all work in conjunction with one another

because they're of the same, you know, so it's like, but it all

put it all points to the sun. I think one of the best ways I

heard it was like, you know, God created the plan, Jesus made the

plan work and the Holy Spirit put the plan in motion.

But it's all that same plan of redemption, the redemptive work,

you know? So yeah, it all, it all works

together. Yeah man, that's the power of

the Holy Spirit most right through through it all man

through our church, through worship, through the Scriptures,

through fellowship, through vacation Bible school is a lot

to get it to man so excited to to share the what the Holy

Spirit's doing in our church with our youth and adults, which

that's. That's.

Cool a cool wrinkle that I've never deserved in vacation Bible

school man and I'm I'm excited for our community to pull up

man. So with a city post church's

first vacation Bible school, bro, how you feeling?

Like what as sitting as the pastor of this and you know,

you've come from this rec background and you've worked

with you and that? What's it like to be sitting

here as we're a couple hours away from launching our first

vacation Bible school? Man, I'm, I'm just thinking this

is, this is so cool. Like it really is.

It's awesome because this is we, we've never had space to do a

vacation Bible school and, and we've never been really set

inside of a community. You know, we've always met and

so we've always done stuff at like outreach, but it's never

been where the church was located.

So to have a vacation Bible school like or VBS where we

invite like we passed out like 400 Flyers the other day, you

know, like to invite our kids like it's, I don't know, man,

it's exciting. And I also see every time you do

something of the first time, it builds a foundation for the next

year and the next year and the next year, you know, So for me,

this is, it's, I don't know, it's like, it's, it's joyous,

like it's really cool. And then there's something about

serving together as a church, you know, everybody's playing a

part in it. We're all working together.

There's just something about serving the Lord together.

That's just a lot of fun. That's kind of how I'm feeling

right now and. It's cool to see how many people

showed up to serve. Yeah, that's.

Exciting dude to serve together, man.

I'm excited for Juan and Connie. You know, those are that's a

couple that have become really close in friendship with me

having some conversations with them.

I'm excited for them. I'm excited for Michael.

You know, that's teaming up together with like the games

with all the kids after, you know, our experience in India at

the home and kind of observing, you know, to to be completely

real, observing some excellence in in teaching, in teaching and

like engaging the kids with the games.

Like what what your mom and Estevan and yourself and your

dad like the example we were given in India was huge, bro.

And like they set a pretty high standard that I know we're not

going to live up to, but we're going to try to like to to

implement some things that we. Got to start somewhere, you

know? That's right, yeah.

Man, so excited about that bro. But for those who may not be

familiar, may just not know, can you define what VBS is, what it

isn't? Kind of what that looks like

here. Yeah, no, I think that's a good

question because this is this is the the VBS for a lot of like

first time people. So what vacation Bible School is

it's usually like a week like maybe like 5 days out of the

summer. It's always done in the summer

and usually done in the evenings.

Now if you're like a mega church, you know, we have stay

at home moms and stuff like in the burbs, then yeah, you could

do it during the day or in the morning, but usually done in the

evenings. You invite the community and and

really the focus are the kids. It's about like inviting the

community and everybody splits up.

You know, there's, there's recreation, there's games,

there's snacks, there's arts and crafts.

The teachers like teach at their level.

And then it's just a time for like the church to just come

together, minister to each other, minister to the

community, you know, because it, it opens the door for the

community to like come into the church not on like a non Sunday

basis where it's not as polished.

It's like it's fun. It's it's loud, it's chaotic,

you know, it's kids, right? But at the same time, it's very

organized, right? And very thought thought out and

prayed over. So VBS, it's a lot of fun, man.

And really the primary goal of VBS is not just like the

discipleship of our kids, but I believe that God uses it to

disciple those who join in on his work.

So it's VBS is also an invitation that God gives us to

join in on his work, our kids, and then the community.

So that's kind of what VBS does and is what it's not is

childcare. A lot of people use VBS as an

opportunity just to like, I'm going to just drop off kids.

And also there's a lot of people that church hop, you know, like,

hey, I'm going to take my kids to the VBS like 2 weeks ago at

this church and then we'll go to your church.

And then, you know, so sometimes people see it as a means to like

just now, man, let me get a few hours, you know, in the evening

and drop my kids off. And, and, you know, it's, it's

fun, man. It's a safe place.

Like some churches have massive budgets, right?

And so they could do that, but that that's not what it's really

about. You know, we just want to focus

on the community and then of course, our kids, right?

That's awesome, man. So a question I had in

especially after our meetings and learning more about the

mission and who we're we're targeting girl, I like to use

that word targeting, but who we're we're wanting to to invite

from, you know, 3 and 4 year olds all the way to 12th graders

and even adult classes, which is man, that was that was it was

different. I've never experienced that.

I've never. So I'm curious one like what was

the importance of that range? And then with the bilingual

classes for the adults as well, like what was the importance of

that? Yeah, no, the, the range is

important because you're, you're the teachers.

Everybody's learning the same thing.

But the teachers are crafting the way they teach and their

crafts and the sessions according to that age group.

So you don't have like a bunch of like 5th graders with

kindergarteners, you know, because then the kindergarteners

will get frustrated and the 5th will get frustrated because

there's too many like little ones and the attention spans are

different. So, so you want to divide up as

much as possible. And then those kids build the

relationships with those leaders so they get to know them

stronger, they get to know them better.

You know, we get the addresses of the kids.

So even after VBS, we'll go like make visits and just to say hi,

how how can we minister to the families?

So yeah, we'll go visit them, meet the parents.

The adult class I think is important.

So that way parents just don't drop their kids off.

They can grow too, you know. And then the Spanish, like our

neighborhood is predominantly Hispanic.

So we want to give an opportunity for Spanish speaking

parents. Lot of the kids talk English,

you know, most of our church, their generation.

But those first generation parents have an opportunity now

to connect with us, man. Yeah.

That's huge, bro. And then like, I love the, the,

the point of, you know, following up with the kids after

vacation Bible school and doing the home visits.

And man, that's in my opinion, that's something that's lost in

today's church because I remember growing up and I know

it might not would pop up at the house and like, sit down, chop

it up. And like, you know, for me, it

was like, Oh, it's cool. We had people over.

But now as I'm older, as like, man, like these are

relationships that my parents built with people in their

church and people that are walking with them and like

really care enough to come check on them.

So that's, that's something that's reminiscent of that, you

know, like that is church that I grew up in, but also like that

experience and seeing it first hand and how city post does it.

When we went to India, bro. So it was like that, that

intention in reaching the community.

I think that's something that sets apart what City Post is

doing from what I've observed in other churches.

Yeah, I mean, you have to, I think you have to reach out.

And what's missing is presence. And when you have an attraction

or model of church, you focus so much.

And the question you ask yourself is, how do we get

people in here? You know what?

We had better singers, better lights, better servants,

programs, all this stuff like dude, that might get people in

the door, but it's not going to sustain.

And then you have to like maintain that.

But if you thrive off of it's not about programming, It's not

about all this stuff. It's about introducing people to

Christ and building those relationships.

I think one of the things that that has been lost in our

culture is this art of like, hey, man, you want to go grab

coffee sometime? No serious.

Like if you ask anybody, people ask me like, how do I get

involved? I was like, man, here's somebody

new from the church. Go invite them to dinner or like

go take them out for coffee, bro.

It's like deer in headlights. You mean, I got to, I got to

talk to somebody. I don't know.

I was like, how is that any different?

Like, like that's what the church does, you know, it's

relationships, man. It's getting to know people you

don't know. Yeah, so I do that all the time,

man. I, I was like, hey man, let's

hang out, let's go get some tacos or something.

Or, or some people are extremely busy, so they only have like an

hour at lunch or 30 minutes, whatever it is.

And I'm, I'm also, I, I think it's important that you meet in

person. Texting is great, phone is

great, but I think humans are meant to have a relationship

with each other face to face. So it's, you know, I asked a lot

of these guys, like how many people from the church have you

gotten up to? Like, hey man, let's go grab

lunch. Yeah, it's not, man.

You don't have a bunch of people saying, oh, I'll do it.

Like, oh, man, that's, that's, that's the vulnerable part.

That's the vulnerable part. Yeah, 'cause what if it goes S?

What if I don't like them? Why they don't like me?

Like it don't matter, you know? Yeah, oh Holy Spirit, they foot

on my neck right now. Bro, I think, I think not just

that piece and we're just going to go on another trail here, but

I think that in ministry, when you are walking with the Lord,

when you're learning, people don't, people don't learn from

each other. Like this is something I learned

early on, man. I would meet with pastors and

just ask questions, pick their brains like, man, how long have

you done this? What's something difficult?

How do you know? I'm called the ministry?

What do you, what are you preaching right now?

How do you do sermon prep? What I've seen is opposite.

I've seen, I've seen people do that and all they do is talk

about themselves. So like you, you're sitting

across somebody who's been in ministry for like 20 something

years and all you're doing is talking about all the stuff that

you're doing. Sheesh.

Like, like you're trying to like get likes or something, but

that's the culture. Man, come on.

We're in. We're we're always there are

insecurities we're always looking for like, but imagine if

you had just brothers that you would like, man, can I, can I

invite you for cough just for one hour?

Like I just want to learn from you.

I want to hear from you. Like, I don't know, man.

There's just something real powerful in that.

I'm a big butt lever in that. I think everybody should have

people like that in their lives that you could learn from.

That's real. But you need that, those

relationships. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And that's something for myself that I just need to be more

intentional and yeah, you know, and getting to know more of our

church family, like just the people that the Lord has sent

here, bro. That's real, man.

Yeah, I'm telling you, I, me and Ray tried having a conversation

the other day and I was like, man, I never would have dreamt

in 100 years to have the relationships I have with the

people at this church. Like it's awesome.

Like I'm like, where was Monica eight years ago?

You know, I mean, like, where was Gavino?

Where was like, where were all these these brothers, John, like

guys that are like super close to our family?

Like, man, why couldn't I met them 15 years ago, You know?

Like, it's just like, I'm just blown away by the relationships

that we have, the times we we're having together.

Like, I almost get emotional about it because it's like, you

just don't know, man. You don't know until you invite

somebody to your house or hang out with somebody you know.

Man, that's that's super real, bro.

Yeah, the the group of guys that I've become, like my brothers

here, started from an invitation to watch a football game.

That's all it was. Yeah, dudes just being dudes,

being silly, chopping it up, cracking jokes.

Right. You never know.

And even like there's times where like when when we meet

people from the church, I'll be like, man, I would love I want

to invite the mower. And it's not because I have to

like I work your past. You're supposed to hang out with

people. No, I don't, I don't got to do

anything I don't want to, right? That's like, I don't have to

invite hang out with you. But it's like, man, I my

curiosity, like man, you just seem like an awesome person.

Like, I want to get to know you, you know, And we do that with

people all the time. Man, that's awesome, you know?

Like it's, it's cool. They.

I'm just saying. Little side quest conversation.

If you listen to this at your ministry, you need to find

people that you could ask questions and let them pour into

you. I don't care if you play guitar.

I don't care if you do graphic design.

I don't care if you sing. Find other people that have done

it longer and better than you and just learn.

That's all I'm going to say about that.

Look at that. Look at that.

It's curious. Yeah, for sure.

But you know, back on the topic of VBS and our church community

coming together and serving and the excitement aspect of what

City Post is doing, are there any, what's the word like things

to look out for during VBS? Any anything that we should keep

our eyes open to? I think that's, yeah, that's

great, especially for us that like we're doing this for the

first time. We have a lot of first time

teachers and I think you need to gauge how do we measure success?

What does this, what success, success look like?

And if we put success in numbers, we're going to be

disappointed because we don't know.

So I think three things. And because I'm a pastor, they

all have to start with the same letter.

So I don't forget. But I think you have to watch

out for discouragement. Like I'm thinking there's going

to be 50 kids and only like 10 show up.

The discouragement is not that 10 that 50 didn't show up.

The encouragement is that I'm being obedient and whoever's

here, we're going to rock it with them.

So the Lord knows. So don't be discouraged based on

who's here and who's not. Don't disengage with the

community. We, we have a tendency like when

there's new people, we have a tendency to like stay in our

groups. So if you see somebody new, try

to bring a man, hang out with them.

Don't disengage and don't disengage this because you don't

know Spanish, man. A smile is the universal

language. And then the last thing I'll say

is delayed preparation. I think it's dangerous.

So when you think of like, it's just VBSI could wing this, no

big deal. Just a few kids, man.

God honors preparation. And if we have a body and we

have people that do not prepare well, then God's not going to

bless it. So we we have to prepare,

whether it's two kids, three kids, 30 kids, whatever amount

of kids are in your classroom, you prepare like the best that

you can and, and the Lord will honor it.

And then, you know, you learn a lot, right?

You get ready. So I think those are some things

that you have to watch out for that you don't want to let bring

you down, discourage you in that nature.

Yeah. That's awesome, man.

A little convicting too, because I kind of like crammed for this

one with this game. This game.

So like Holy Spirit, no punches this week.

I see No, but that's that's real man.

That's that's that's real guidance in from your

experience. Yeah, like I said, and those are

my experience because I've done that, like I, I have delayed my

preparation. I thought I had it where I'm

like, man, bro, I just throw some games together, no big

deal. And next thing you know, kids

get hurt. It's a mess.

What happens if you prepare a game for like 20 and only like

5, right? What are you going to do now?

You know, So the planning is important, right?

Yeah. Absolutely, man.

So that was some things to look out for, whatever, like some

great things that you know, you think would be encouraging to,

you know, our staff team, kids, listeners, parents, whoever.

Man, I think there's nothing better than serving Jesus

together. Like there's just something

about serving Jesus together as a church.

A lot of people coming home from work life tired.

And it's like when you get around everybody, it's there's

an excitement, right? It's fun, it's reviving to the

soul. So I think serving together is a

big plus. We're going to get to meet new

people, meet the community, meet folks that we've never met

before. That's it.

That's, that's always exciting. And then this is what builds the

community of a church. When you serve together, it

brings you closer. So after this week, the people

that I hate to say it this way, it's like you weren't there, so

you missed out. There's a little bit of a

cohesiveness for those who came together.

You know, it's that that living on mission, you could say.

So that's the fun part for the church.

Like, yeah. And then it's walking in

obedience. That's the biggest thing, right?

God put us here. Right.

How are we going to reach the community, man?

BBS is one of those ways, right? And then a few weeks, we're

going to do a movie night. Come on.

You know that's gonna be fire, bro.

Yeah. Like it's like we're just always

figuring things out. Like asking the Spirit to lead

U.S. Open doors, opportunities to

lead people closer to Christ. Man, that's huge bro.

And it's a quote one of my homies, Kyle and Lewis Moore,

TCU's last Rhodes scholar. Bro, there's a difference

between being present and being a presence.

That's I think this vacation Bible school, what we're doing

with the movie night, what we've done in the past with like the

toy drives and things like that, like City Post is becoming a

presence in this community, man. And I'm excited to see who God

sends us and how it continues to grow.

Yeah, I I agree. And, and being a presence means

that we're moving in like we're not, we're not going nowhere.

And we're, we're going to continue to do things with

groups and orgs. And because if we're honest,

man, there's like churches, you know, around us down the street

that they could do stuff right. But I think what separates us is

like the message of the gospel. So clearly that that's kind of

where a heartbeat is. So figuring out ways to go to

people and bring that message to them, you know, and in that way,

you know, get disciple them, grow them, grow together.

So excited about that, man. It's going to be cool.

Yeah, me too. Well, that's all I got about

VBS, bro. So yeah, one question, what's

rule #1 about Fight Club? Snap, don't talk about Fight

Club. Yeah, man, I'm excited, bro.

If you want to want to break down, I'm excited to.

Talk about Fight Club, yeah. To go back to like India and

like, people were asking me, you know how I felt about going.

I was nervously excited about. Going to India because I.

Didn't know what I was getting myself into.

I had an idea and I just knew Holy Spirit was going to move.

That's how I feel about this sermon series.

I'm nervously excited because I know like God is going to bless.

Us through it. Bro, if like the Living in the

Spirit sermon from this past week was like the however, like

Paul uses like that transition point from one series to the

next, bro, he is not pulling no punches.

Or like Auvino said, he was looking for the GIF in Rambo

where he's like with the machine.

That's how the Holy Spirit's fighting to be at us, bro.

At least that's how well I think so I'm.

That's all right. Yeah.

No, it's it's man. I was just praying like, you

know, we we went through the gospel and talked to all the

elements of the gospel, of course, ended in like, this is

what it looks like to live in the Spirit.

But I was just kind of praying about like, what's next?

And yeah, we're about to get into a sermon series called

Fight Club. And, and I don't know what like,

I don't know, I was just thinking about it.

So we're going to look at like fights in the Bible, like, you

know, and let's just start thinking about like my wrestling

days. And but I truly believe that

there's lessons in in fighting. And when you look at specific

fights in Scripture, I think that we find things that God

does in these these. And so, yeah, I'm excited.

I don't want to give out too much, but that's kind of the

whole purpose. So it's like, you know, this

Sunday, David versus Goliath, you know, for the heavyweight

title, it's a yeah, you have this, this young boy that's

about to fight a nine foot 9 inch, you know, monster like

why? Like what, how how does that

what went down? You know, why did it go down and

and there's lessons and all that, you know, we're talking

about when Elijah fought 450 prophets of bail handicapped

man. Yeah, that's right.

It's like, yeah, it's gone. You know, how did he do it?

Why? What was his attitude toward it?

But I also think I want to just take this from from my boy Mike

Tyson. Everyone has a plan until you

get hit in the face. And so when I think when we talk

about fighting and fighting with the Lord on our side, the Holy

Spirit, but also looking at fights where people have lost

because they didn't have the Lord, what can we learn from

that? Because everybody has a plan to

get head in the mouth. That plan goes away real fast.

That's kind of where we're going.

You know that the next 10 weeks, it's going to be great.

OK, so I bring in a mouthpiece to church on Sunday.

That's what that sounds like to me.

OK. Yeah, we got to talk about some

squabbles. That's right.

And fighting is is something that it's in our human nature,

you know, like there's a lot that we could learn from

fighting. And I think that the Lord shows

us a lot about it as well. So it's going to be good.

You know, I just want to encourage everybody to enjoy the

last couple weeks of summer before school gets started.

It's been a good one. Make sure you get some rest.

Make sure that you take some time for yourself.

Get that self-care in there. It's important.

So yeah, I just know there's there's a lot of hard working

people in our church and I just want to make sure everybody's

able to take some time and come back stronger.
