  1. This is City Post Church. We're about three things.

  2. Build equipped and send. All under the Lordship of Jesus.

  3. Christ. A small church plant in Fort

  4. Worth, TX. Who decided to do things a

  5. little differently? Adoramos Ayesu cristo.

  6. I love City Post because of the people.

  7. It's where I belong. We truly preach the Word.

  8. I love City Post because of the community we've been able to

  9. build. To do ministry like Jesus.

  10. For light to push back. Darkness.

  11. This is City Post podcast. I actually grew up in South.

  12. Florida, and not a Fort Worthian, but Fort Worth is

  13. home. That's right, the funk.

  14. I grew up in South Florida in Pompano Beach and we lived in an

  15. area called Margate and in Margate down the street from our

  16. home was a pond. Now as kids.

  17. It looked like a lake. We.

  18. We. Called it a lake.

  19. And it's funny, you go back now you're just like, that's it.

  20. Like that's that's tiny. But as a child, you're like.

  21. That thing is massive so me and my friends we would spend.

  22. Our days outside. Going to the lake and we would

  23. go fishing all the time. We would catch our own bait.

  24. We'd get crawdads, we get. Shrimp.

  25. We get little minnows. And we'd just.

  26. Be out there fishing. But the thing that worked?

  27. Best was bread, and with bread you could catch.

  28. Brim and all that stuff, but there was one day in.

  29. Particular where I really. Wanted to go to the.

  30. Lake I was. Feeling it in my bones, I was, I

  31. think I was like 10 or 11 years old.

  32. I'm like, I'm going to the lake today and I want to go fishing.

  33. So I go to my mom and I ask my mom, Mom, can I go to the lake?

  34. And what does she tell me? No, your brother's not with you.

  35. Dad's almost home. We're going to have dinner.

  36. You cannot go to the lake now. I'm in a little bit of a

  37. conundrum now. Because.

  38. You ever see those cartoons where you.

  39. Have like the devil. And an Angel talking on your

  40. shoulders and. There was a little.

  41. Bit of me that was like, man, Ricky.

  42. Just go to lake. Nobody's going to know.

  43. And then this one's like, listen to your mom, you should obey.

  44. And so anyway. So what I did was.

  45. I got my little McDonald's toolbox.

  46. I put my fishing can in there. I went to the kitchen and I got.

  47. The butt of the bread. Because nobody pays attention to

  48. it. And then I took it and I was

  49. like, you know what? I could go.

  50. To the lake, get a. Few minutes of fishing and run

  51. back home and mom will never know.

  52. So the mission was on. So I did all.

  53. That and I snuck away when my mom was cooking dinner.

  54. Went to the lake. Got to the dock.

  55. I kept looking over my shoulder because this was scandalous.

  56. I'm like disobeying my mom knowingly.

  57. But I was like. But I got to get the fishing in

  58. and as I'm fishing, no lie. I catch the biggest fish I've

  59. ever. Seen in my life and that thing,

  60. I pulled this brim out. It's about this big, and as a

  61. kid you are now a superhero. Like this is what?

  62. Legends are made of. Right, so I pull the.

  63. Fish out and I'll people. Are like.

  64. Gathering around me, if they had camera phones, it would be all.

  65. Over, but it wasn't right. So people are like, wow, look at

  66. that. Thing and I was so excited and

  67. the one thing I thought of myself.

  68. I got to go. Show my dad so I.

  69. Take the fish. On the string with the line, I

  70. leave everything there and I run home with my fish and I mean, I

  71. am booking it. I'm so excited to show my dad

  72. and I get there and my dad's at home and my mom's outside

  73. waiting, but I'm not thinking about that.

  74. 'Cause I got the biggest. Fish I've ever seen in the

  75. world. So I get there and I'm like,

  76. Dad, look. At the size of this.

  77. Thing and my mom's like, didn't I tell you not to?

  78. Go look at the size of this thing.

  79. You're grounded so no leg for the next like 2.

  80. Weeks. And then we put it in the

  81. bucket. My dad made me go take it.

  82. Back it'll take your happy. Butt back, throw it and you're

  83. in trouble 'cause you didn't listen to your mom.

  84. You know what's funny? Is was that one moment worth

  85. losing out the next? Two or three weeks.

  86. And honestly, no, it wasn't. Because now I can't go with my

  87. friends, Now I'm stuck. And when we talk about

  88. temptation in our lives, temptation.

  89. Always ties. An empty reward to it at the

  90. time. When temptation comes at you, it

  91. always seems wonderful. It always seems like man I.

  92. Could just get this thing. Right here and right now,

  93. instant gratification and it it has this.

  94. Reward. That is very, very.

  95. Empty. It's an empty promise.

  96. It's a reward without value. It's a.

  97. It's a. It builds a bridge that leads.

  98. To nowhere with streets of nothingness.

  99. And at the moment in time, it sounds like a great idea.

  100. It sounds like there's something I could be celebrated with, but

  101. the consequences of falling into temptation far.

  102. Outweigh the rewards of life. We're going to look at Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  103. chapter 4, and this is. Our last, our our last.

  104. Teaching in this this fight. Club series.

  105. It's fight this. Whole idea of fighting

  106. temptation. Jesus is about to go to.

  107. The wilderness and Satan is about to meet him out there and

  108. Jesus. Is about to be tested.

  109. With temptation and I believe. That Jesus gives us.

  110. An outline he maps out how to fight temptation off.

  111. And this is going to help us. Today, man, I love what?

  112. Luther said. Martin Luther, if you read his.

  113. Stuff, he says. Prayer.

  114. Meditation and temptation are the three best instructors for a

  115. gospel minister. Temptation comes for every

  116. single person. It's not only for some people,

  117. it's not for good. People listen.

  118. It's for all. People, especially with

  119. believers, all of us are tempted by something differently.

  120. But the fact that. Of the matter is that we're all

  121. tempted. So what does it look like?

  122. To fight this thing off, we have to look at the example that

  123. Jesus gives us. So before we read the text, I

  124. got to set. This thing up.

  125. Jesus just got baptized. By John the Baptist So after he

  126. is immersed in the water, a dove comes down, lands on his

  127. shoulder. God speaks from the heavens, so

  128. this is my son. Who I truly love and right after

  129. Jesus gets out of the water it. Says in verse 1 then.

  130. Jesus was led by who? By the Spirit.

  131. The Spirit. LED Jesus into the wilderness to

  132. be tempted. By the devil, see what Jesus.

  133. About to teach us now he he is identifying with humanity and

  134. baptism and he's also going to do this in temptation but the

  135. thing about. Christ is that he's.

  136. Going to be tempted, but he's never going to sin.

  137. He is the great example for us to look at.

  138. Now the Holy Spirit. Now listen, the Holy Spirit

  139. cannot tempt you. That's.

  140. James chapter one, verse 13. The Holy Spirit might lead us

  141. into a place where we are tempted, but it's not to prove

  142. something to God. It's for God to prove.

  143. Something to us and God might pull you into these.

  144. These temptations pull you into these times, allow you to

  145. experience it so that way you may rely on Him.

  146. That way he could grow you that way.

  147. He could teach you something. Now what's interesting?

  148. Here is that Jesus is about to there's going to be like there's

  149. there's two realities that he's about.

  150. To walk into He just came out of the cooling waters of the

  151. Jordan. And he's about to go.

  152. To the barren wilderness, huge crowds, to solitude and silence.

  153. He has a dove that. Rests on him with the Holy

  154. Spirit. Now the Holy Spirit is going to

  155. take him to the wilderness. He has the voice of the Father.

  156. Calling him my beloved son. Now he has the hiss of Satan

  157. trying to tempt him. He is anointed and now he's

  158. attacked. There's water.

  159. Baptism. Now there's fire of temptation.

  160. The heavens open up. Now he's about to go walk.

  161. Through hell. And many of our temptations

  162. usually come out of a time when we have experienced Christ in an

  163. amazing. Way you you learn about Jesus,

  164. God does. Something here comes the enemy.

  165. What? Are you going to do and I love

  166. verse 2. I think verse 2 is the most.

  167. Realist verse in all of. Scripture after fasting 40 days

  168. and 40 night. He was hungry.

  169. That's real. I get hungry after four hours.

  170. So I'm saying 40 days and 40 nights.

  171. Jesus was fasting. The Spirit led him to the

  172. wilderness to fast. Why he was about to.

  173. Start begin his earthly ministry and when we look at.

  174. Biblical. Fasting, Biblical fasting is

  175. about. Food.

  176. Now, I know we live in a culture where we like to fast from other

  177. things. So we're like, man, I'm fasting

  178. from chocolate, I'm fasting from Doctor Pepper, I'm fasting from

  179. social media. Listen, those things are.

  180. Great. It's a great way to reset your

  181. life. But it's not biblical.

  182. Biblical fasting is a fasting from food.

  183. The best way? That I've heard it said.

  184. Is that fasting is starving your body to fatten your spirit so.

  185. Jesus is. Starving him.

  186. He is seeking the father, he is fasting from food, and he's

  187. getting to the end of his. Fast Moses was without food.

  188. For in Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights, we see that in

  189. Deuteronomy Chapter 9 verse 9. Elijah Fasted.

    Deuteronomy 9:9

  190. This long as well in First Kings 19 verse 8. 40 days and. 40

    1 Kings 19:8

  191. nights seems like a a a period of testing in the scripture.

  192. We see this in both the days of Noah.

  193. We also see this as the. Israelites are in the wilderness

  194. for 40 years, but here's the difference between all of them.

  195. Jesus was the only. One to successfully do it

  196. without breaking the promises of God.

  197. Jesus did it without. Sinning.

  198. Jesus did it without grumbling. Matthew points out that he's

  199. going into a barren desert if you study the wilderness of

  200. Judea. It was just that it was a.

  201. Desert. It's hot.

  202. There's nothing that grows there.

  203. He couldn't just find berries on the ground or streams of water.

  204. It was a. Barren wilderness.

  205. It was a barren desert and at the end of 40 days of not eating

  206. anything. Your body, actually.

  207. Enters into starvation. And I read this and I want us to

  208. understand something about temptation, because there's two

  209. things that's very like a common denominator.

  210. There's a. Place and there's a condition

  211. and what the tempter. Does, especially in our lives.

  212. He's going to find you in a place of wilderness all.

  213. Alone by yourself. There's always specific places.

  214. That we have in our lives. There's.

  215. Places that you and I get to emotionally, spiritually,

  216. physically. Whatever that looks like for

  217. you. Because we're all.

  218. Different, but there's. Places that we get.

  219. To in life, that temptation is most available.

  220. To you. And then the condition that

  221. you're in, for many of us, it's a place and a condition.

  222. It's is I'm tired, it's I'm hurting.

  223. I just had my heart broken. The temptation to go back to

  224. that phone number in my phone is too strong.

  225. The temptation to go back to that thing that I quit a long

  226. time ago is pulling me in because I'm where I'm.

  227. At Jesus was at a. Place where God told him.

  228. To go. Into the wilderness and fast,

  229. and he's at the point where he's almost done, and Satan is going

  230. to tempt him to break that. And the whole goal of Satan is

  231. to stop Jesus from getting to the cross.

  232. It's been like that his whole entire story.

  233. It is to stop Jesus. From going to the cross.

  234. That's why we see the temptation here.

  235. That's why they try to. Scourge him to.

  236. Death. That's why Peter says.

  237. Jesus, you cannot die. And Jesus looks at him, says

  238. get. Away from me, Satan.

  239. It's all about stopping Christ. From going to the cross the

  240. enemy. Knows if he could stop Jesus

  241. from getting to the cross, it'll stop the purposes of God.

  242. And he can't forgive our sin. So there's.

  243. A place, a location, there's a condition that hits us.

  244. Here comes the tempter. Look at verse 3.

  245. The tempter came to him and said.

  246. If. You are the son of.

  247. God tell these. Stones to become bread.

  248. So verse 3, something I want you to notice, the tempter came.

  249. So listen, it's not if you get tempted, it's when you get

  250. tempted, it's coming. For you listen, we get.

  251. Tempted all the time. What's the temptation for?

  252. Is it to make you look ridiculous and makes you look

  253. dumb? No, the temptation.

  254. Is to pull you away. From the calling and the.

  255. Purposes that God has for your life and if you.

  256. Fall into that temptation, then he's going to yank.

  257. You away your faith. Is going to get weakened up.

  258. That's what the enemy wants. It's not if, but it's when.

  259. Listen, the tempter came and then I love what Satan does

  260. here. Because he says if you.

  261. Are the Son of God a better translation if you look at like

  262. the conditional like pronouns? Here it's since you are.

  263. The Son of God. What Satan is doing is Satan is

  264. not challenging the deity of Christ.

  265. Satan knows exactly. Who Jesus is how crazy that the

  266. devil has better. Theology than most progressive

  267. theologians. Satan knows who Jesus is.

  268. He's not. Challenging his deity, he's

  269. challenging for him to. Prove it.

  270. He's. Calling him out on it almost

  271. like tempting him. Isn't that what he's doing?

  272. He's tempting Christ. And then he says, listen, I know

  273. you're hungry. He knows the condition he's in.

  274. He knows the location. He knows where he's.

  275. At Hey. If you're hungry and you're

  276. since you're the Son of God, go ahead and just take one of these

  277. stones and make them bread. Simple shouldn't be that hard

  278. for you to son to God. What Satan wanted him to do was

  279. violate God's plan. It was about using the gifts of

  280. God for selfish ambition. He wanted him to satisfy himself

  281. by denying what God told him to do.

  282. Pretty simple Jesus, use your miraculous powers, make some

  283. food for yourself. But you see Philippians 27, it

  284. says that Jesus even 100% in his humanity, 100% deity.

  285. Says that he put the deity side away to.

  286. Take on the very nature of a servant.

  287. So what Jesus does? Here in verse 4 is interesting

  288. because. He could have easily soccer.

  289. Kicked Satan to another Galaxy, but he didn't do.

  290. That he chose to fight off. Satan and inside of his humanity

  291. as a man, so now he has to rely on the.

  292. Power of God's. Word and His truth.

  293. So what does Jesus do? Jesus hits back by quoting

  294. scripture. Right, so.

  295. Jesus answered, It is written, Man shall not live on bread

  296. alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth.

  297. Of God. What Jesus does here is that he

  298. is. He's showing us, he's imitating

  299. and he's identifying with us. So that way he's giving us a

  300. blueprint on how to fight temptation ourselves.

  301. And it starts with Scripture and he quotes Deuteronomy 8/3.

  302. This is what it says. Deuteronomy 8/3 He humbled you,

  303. causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which

  304. neither you nor your ancestor had known to teach you that man

  305. does not live live on bread alone, but on every.

  306. Word. That comes from the mouth of.

  307. God what Jesus is. Going to do here is that every

  308. time Satan comes at him. He's using.

  309. Scripture from when the Israelites were struggling out

  310. in the desert, right? So he's using Deuteronomy.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  311. Chapter 8 and he's like. Listen, I'm not.

  312. I trust God. And what this scripture says

  313. that Israel was. Questioning God because of their

  314. condition. And what?

  315. Jesus. Is saying he's like no, I'm not

  316. questioning the father because we do not live on bread alone.

  317. The word of God is. Worth more than bread, which we

  318. see in the New Testament, which some we learned on Friday night.

  319. Where Jesus says. I'm the bread of life.

  320. Anybody who comes to me will not hunger ever again.

  321. I will satisfy so if Jesus were to.

  322. Fall into this? Oh, it would have been a mess.

  323. It would. It would have.

  324. It would have just. Turned his back on everything

  325. that God had for him, but he didn't he uses.

  326. The Word of God to. Fight off the enemy and.

  327. What I love about this too is that Jesus.

  328. Does not. Like silently disagree with.

  329. Satan, he's not passive aggressive.

  330. Here, he's not. Trying to find common ground.

  331. No, he's like boom, absolutely not.

  332. This is what God's Word says, and he shuns him away.

  333. He shows that every. Word that proceeds from his

  334. mouth should. Be of his of God.

  335. But then. Verse 5 The devil.

  336. Took him to a holy. City so the devil like.

  337. It's something y'all. I don't know if you've noticed,

  338. the devil's pretty. Persistent.

  339. It's not just going to be. Who?

  340. I fought them off. I'm going to see him in four or

  341. five years. No, it's a constant battle.

  342. It's constant. The Devil.

  343. Took him to the holy city and had him stand at the highest

  344. point of the temple Man. If you read, there's a a Jewish

  345. theologian named. Josephus, He says that the drop

  346. of. The temple was about 450 feet to

  347. the ground in the area of the Kidron Valley.

  348. What Satan is going to ask him to do here in verse 6, he's

  349. like, listen, if you're the Son of God, since you're the Son of

  350. God, go ahead and throw yourself down.

  351. Go and jump off because doesn't the Bible say that He will

  352. command his angels concerning you and they will lift you up in

  353. their hands so that you will not strike your foot against stone?

  354. Look, look what Satan is is prompting.

  355. Jesus with what? Satan is showing his appeal.

  356. To the is the. Same thing that all of mankind

  357. has. We want every we want.

  358. God's approval. And we want God's approval in

  359. front of everybody. We we don't just want his

  360. approval. We want it publicly demonstrated

  361. so that way the whole world can see.

  362. That God is approving of me, He. Internalizes it, and what's even

  363. crazier is that when Jesus tells him the first time he fights him

  364. off with scripture, Satan comes back and Satan uses scripture to

  365. try to tempt Christ. He quotes.

  366. It, but he doesn't quote the whole thing Satan is reading.

  367. What? Satan is quoting Psalms 91,

  368. Psalms 91, verses 11, and. 12 So this is what.

    Psalms 91:11

  369. The Psalm says the. Psalmist says for he will.

  370. Command His angels concerning you to guard you in all of your.

  371. Ways they will lift. You up in their hands, so you

  372. will not strike your foot against stone.

  373. What Satan does is that Satan quotes the scripture, but he

  374. doesn't quote. The whole scripture.

  375. And listen, Satan is using scripture.

  376. To try to tempt the. Lord and listen, many of us fall

  377. into that trap where somebody could easily throw out and

  378. sprinkle out a verse thinking like man, they're.

  379. They're pretty. They're pretty sharp.

  380. Y'all better know what scripture says This song we always.

  381. Talk. You better have your the word of

  382. God with you to check whoever is.

  383. Telling you something that is truthful.

  384. Satan is giving half truths. Go ahead Jesus, if you do this

  385. the. Angels are going to rescue you

  386. in a spectacular fashion. You're going to enter into your

  387. calling and into this Kingdom. You're going to jump down.

  388. Angels are going to save you. And in the whole, everybody's

  389. going to see this. I think of like like Marvel

  390. movies like Iron Man or like. Thor as they like.

  391. Jump from the Galaxy and land on Earth.

  392. He's like lands with his first in the ground and and like.

  393. Waves of dust go. Everywhere and everybody's like.

  394. Whoa. He's going to destroy everybody.

  395. I could almost see that's kind of the temptation that Jesus is

  396. point. I mean Satan is pointing Jesus

  397. to man. Show up and show.

  398. Outlet the whole world know that you.

  399. Are the Son of God. But what we see is that Jesus.

  400. Doesn't come into town that way. He shows up in a donkey, humble

  401. servant going to the cross. He's trying to get Satan's

  402. trying to get Jesus to demonstrate his power.

  403. Look how Jesus answers him. It is written in verse 7.

  404. Do not. Put the Lord your God to the

  405. test. Same verse as the Israelites are

  406. in the wilderness. Deuteronomy 616.

  407. That's what exactly what he's man, he's recalling.

  408. When the Israelites had this. Experience in Manasseh and they

  409. were grumbling to the Lord and they were they were angry with

  410. Moses because they were demanding that Moses bring water

  411. like they trust God like God didn't just.

  412. Save you guys from slavery. So what he does is Jesus is.

  413. Quoting do not put the Lord. Your God to the test.

  414. Don't do that. So again, verse A the devil.

  415. Took him to a very. High mountain to show him all

  416. the kingdoms of the world in their splendor and say it's

  417. crafty y'all. So the first thing is you

  418. hungry? You're beat down, man.

  419. Go make some bread. The second one, you know what

  420. you're about to kick off this ministry, man.

  421. Let the whole world know. Show them your power.

  422. You're you're God, right? And now what does he do the

  423. third time what Satan does? Is he offers Jesus a shortcut?

  424. He says again, he took him to the high mountain, He showed him

  425. all the kingdoms of the world and all their splendor.

  426. And verse 9 he says. All this I will give to you,

  427. Jesus, if you. Bow down and worship me.

  428. I will give you everything if you become my #2.

  429. You still get the. Perks of the number one.

  430. Your name is not assigned to it though.

  431. I. Will give you everything you ask

  432. for. You don't have to go to the.

  433. Cross you don't have to suffer for these people.

  434. You could just ignore. What your father says, I will

  435. give you. Everything and it sounds

  436. wonderful, but no, because temptation usually breeds

  437. rewards that are empty. It's not going to happen.

  438. And what we know about saying is that right now.

  439. We're he's. Operating in Satan's domain.

  440. Jesus is very aware of who he's. Talking to, we know.

  441. That scripture tells us. Satan is the ruler of the world.

  442. That's John 1231. Satan is the God.

  443. Of the Sage Little G. Right, Second Corinthians 4/4.

  444. Right, the whole world. Lies in his power.

  445. That's first John 5/19. He illustrates this in Daniel

    Daniel 10:13

  446. chapter 10, verse 13. Like we see all through

  447. scripture. That Satan is not in hell right

  448. now. That's coming in the Book of

  449. Revelation when Christ comes. Back same will be casted.

  450. Away and held forevermore. But right now he is the Prince

  451. of this world and he does what he wants.

  452. God is allowing him in his sovereignty to do it.

  453. And Jesus recognizes this. And I love what Jesus does.

  454. Almost like Jesus gets fed up with him.

  455. He says Jesus. Said to him, away from me,

  456. Satan, for it is written. Worship the Lord your God.

  457. And serve him. Only Jesus is sighting, and he's

  458. paraphrasing Deuteronomy 613 through 14.

  459. As the Israelites are. Experiencing all these things

  460. that are happening to them in the wilderness, Jesus continues

  461. to use that text to push Satan away.

  462. But he's not like with the he's not like them because he

  463. withstands the temptation. He doesn't fall into it.

  464. Which is where we could. Learn and I love verse 11.

  465. Then the devil left him, and the angels came and attended Christ.

  466. The only other time we see this is in when Jesus in the Garden

  467. of Gethsemane after he prays. And he's.

  468. Bleeding out of his pores, the angels come and attend to him.

  469. I don't know what that looked like, but when you look at this

  470. story in Luke Chapter 11. It says that the devil had.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  471. Finished all this tempting and he left him until an opportune

  472. time. What's saying is saying is like,

  473. man, I'm going to. Wait until the.

  474. Right time to come at you and we're going to do this again.

  475. So. What do we know about

  476. temptation? There's three things that that

  477. Jesus tempts us or that Satan tempts us with.

  478. That we all go through. We see it in first John chapter

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  479. 2. It is the lust of the eyes, the

  480. the lust of the flesh. And the pride of life?

  481. Break it down a little bit more easier.

  482. What are we tempted with? Physical appetite, personal gain

  483. and power. All of the temptations.

  484. The common denominator of temptation is.

  485. This right here SO. What am I?

  486. What is my appetite looking for physically?

  487. If I struggle with lust. The opportune time to be tempted

  488. is when I am alone in my room with my phone.

  489. If I struggle with alcohol, the opportune time to be tempted is

  490. when I had a long day at work and that temptation comes in.

  491. Like man, you know what, you had a long week, go ahead and go

  492. get. Yourself a pack you deserve.

  493. It I know I struggle with it, then why am I falling into?

  494. That stuff because of. The condition and the location.

  495. Because it appeals to the the physical appetite that we have.

  496. Then personal gain, then power. Genesis chapter 3 we see the

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  497. temptation that Satan brings to Adam and Eve.

  498. You may eat of the tree. Genesis 1 I mean 3-1 personal

  499. gain. You will not die.

  500. Power you will be like God. Same thing, we just.

  501. Saw Matthew 4, You may eat by changing stones into bread.

  502. Physical appetite, personal gain.

  503. You will not hurt your foot if you jump off this thing.

  504. Power. I will.

  505. Give you all the kingdoms of the world first, John.

  506. Lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life.

  507. So if temptation is constantly coming at us, the question is

  508. how do we? Fight this so before we close.

  509. I'm just going to give you 3. Quick, Three quick ways that we

  510. could fight. Temptation.

  511. Based out of the text of what Jesus shows us.

  512. So when the tempter comes. At us if I'm a follower of

  513. Christ. And the tempter comes at us.

  514. Number one is that I the way that I effectively resist

  515. temptation is by countering it. I I counter Saints.

  516. Lies with the word of God, period.

  517. What we see that Jesus does Jesus.

  518. When he is countered with temptation.

  519. He. Doesn't that's going to sound

  520. bad, But he doesn't just fall on the floor.

  521. He doesn't weep. He doesn't.

  522. Cry. He doesn't pray.

  523. What does he do? He quotes the word of God.

  524. And listen, the more you know. The word of.

  525. God, the more ready you're going to be when temptation comes your

  526. way, the less you know. The word of God.

  527. The more acceptable you're going to be when temptation comes your

  528. way. Many of us think about why do I

  529. always? Fall.

  530. Why do I always struggle? Why do you always not read your

  531. Bible? Guys, it's all about using God's

  532. Word. And listen, if we're ignorant in

  533. the Word of God, then we are going to be poorly equipped.

  534. When temptation comes our way, we're going to find ourselves.

  535. Back at. Square 1 and what?

  536. Jesus does is as. Soon as Satan pulls up on him.

  537. He starts to quote scripture. Now, I know some of us are

  538. thinking, man, Ricky, but I ain't that smart.

  539. It's hard for me to remember things.

  540. Yeah, but you know all the lyrics from Taylor Swift songs

  541. or Selena, you know, rap lyrics. You guys, you.

  542. Could remember things if you want to and I always.

  543. Try to tell people too, like if you.

  544. Have a hard time remembering things?

  545. Summarize it. It's like if.

  546. Satan's coming at you and you're just like, I don't know, like I

  547. feel like this temptation. You could easily.

  548. Summarize stories in the Bible like you know what now?

  549. Like there was this. Guy, that was.

  550. Blind and Jesus healed him, and everybody was coming at him, and

  551. they were like. Who did?

  552. This he's like, I don't know, but I all I know is that I was

  553. once blind, but now I see. Listen, you just start like

  554. summarizing scripture. You start talking to about.

  555. Scripture you just start. Throwing it out there and the

  556. enemy runs. He has to because the word of

  557. God is. Powerful Ephesians 6 Paul talks.

  558. About the Word of God. As being a double edged sword,

  559. it's a weapon not just of defense but of offense.

  560. So when the enemy comes at you and you're feeling like all down

  561. on yourself, your mind is like you're just in a bad.

  562. Place you better. Take that thing out.

  563. Start just slicing. You better take God's Word out

  564. and you just start talking. To yourself about it, you pray,

  565. you ask God to give you a. Revelation of His word Like

  566. Lord, I know. You've called me to something

  567. better than this. Lord, I know.

  568. For a fact that light has. No business being with darkness.

  569. Get me away from this place, and when you start using Scripture

  570. and you start quoting the word of God, you're going to start

  571. seeing a change. In how you battle.

  572. Temptation, you're not going to fall into it as much.

  573. You're actually going to start fighting it.

  574. So number one, you got to highlight it.

  575. You bring light. Of God's truth.

  576. And you shine it on. The devil's lies.

  577. But number? Two, we have to.

  578. Learn that not everyone who. Quotes Scripture.

  579. Or not everyone who quotes. God Word is of God.

  580. Be careful. What?

  581. Satan does the second time around.

  582. Satan. Quotes God's word.

  583. He just leaves a little bit out of it.

  584. He takes it. Watch this.

  585. He takes it out of context. You know, there's a lot of.

  586. Wacky stuff that. Happens in our world.

  587. I've seen scripture used for many things.

  588. There's been political landscapes where they use.

  589. Scripture to get. Voters, y'all remember the

  590. rapture came there's been slave masters who have kept people

  591. enslaved because of scripture. There's been cult leaders who

  592. use scripture. There's been mass shootings

  593. where people left manifestos and they.

  594. Quoted Scripture. There's been millions of people

  595. have been murdered. Because they use scripture,

  596. Colts have used it to hold. People's attention and listen

  597. Scripture is used in a improper way and it doesn't.

  598. Show the way of Christ? Well, Ricky, how do I know?

  599. Because it doesn't show Jesus. We've got to be careful.

  600. That people are not just using scripture.

  601. To sell stuff, or to get votes, or to like other people, or to

  602. try to get people to like you be.

  603. Careful men and and Peter. He talks about false prophets.

  604. And how they were using God's word to get some money.

  605. Out of you. So what do we got to do?

  606. We. Better know His word, and we

  607. better know it correctly, and we better know it.

  608. Right, so that. Way when you hear scripture

  609. being improperly used. You're able to.

  610. Stand up and be like, no, that's not it, man.

  611. I've had people pray and prophecy and try to push me down

  612. and I'm looking at them like, Nah, this ain't it.

  613. And they tried using God's word over my life and I'm like, Nope,

  614. that's not it either. There's something off.

  615. There's something wrong with the Spirit here.

  616. And I would have known that unless I knew his word.

  617. So. We've got to know God's Word and

  618. be ready when somebody. Else tries to use it.

  619. For something other than pointing.

  620. You to Christ. So not everyone who?

  621. Quotes God's word is of God be. Careful, know your word.

  622. So you're able to use. It and then the last thing and

  623. we'll close here. Be aware.

  624. Stay late. I mean stay.

  625. Be aware. Stay alert and pay attention.

  626. How do you say the same thing three times?

  627. Just like that. You're not smart, you're dumb.

  628. You make bad decisions, guys. We have.

  629. Got to have a. Spiritual awareness in our lives

  630. that we know that something is a temptation.

  631. How do I do that, Rick? How do I?

  632. Have an A spiritual awareness to know that when things are coming

  633. at me, I know that it's not of God.

  634. Like I I've read the Bible. I have.

  635. Scripture, it's just so how do I know the way that you're going

  636. to end up knowing the more intimacy.

  637. That you have with Christ. Everything in this world looks

  638. strangely dim the more I know Jesus.

  639. The closer I get to Jesus. The more I read His word, the

  640. more I pray, the more I stay connected to the vine.

  641. When things come my way that don't belong, it's going to be

  642. easier for me to identify what doesn't belong.

  643. How do I identify what doesn't belong?

  644. Because I know what belongs. The way that you test.

  645. If you know that I have a real $100 bill, I don't flood myself

  646. looking at fake $100 bills. I look at the real ones.

  647. So when a fake one comes my way, I am able to identify it.

  648. It's the same thing with anything in this life that

  649. you're trying to prove if it's real or not.

  650. You don't focus on the fake, you focus on the real ones.

  651. So how do I know how? Do I stay alert?

  652. You got to be connected to Christ, intimacy with Christ,

  653. knowing. Christ, it builds your

  654. spiritual. Awareness When something shows

  655. up in your life, you're going to be like, this sounds so good,

  656. it's pleasing. Oh man, I might like it for a

  657. season. It's a quick reward, but you

  658. know it's not from him. And how do we know that this

  659. thing could be trusted? Because Jesus.

  660. Hebrews 415 for we do not have a high.

  661. Priest. Who is unable to emphasize?

  662. With our. Weakness.

  663. But we have one who has been tempted in.

  664. Every way, just as we are yet He.

  665. Did not sin. Jesus went through it.

  666. He was tempted just like you and I.

  667. The only difference is that He never sinned.

  668. So whenever we need to learn how to fight our temptation, we

  669. don't go to books. I don't go to podcast, I go to

  670. the word of God. Because he's the only one that

  671. did it, right? He's the only one that did it.

  672. We serve a God who knows. Exactly what you're going.

  673. Through temptation is hard. The attack of the enemy is hard.

  674. I'm not going to deny it. It is.

  675. Listen, I get tempted with stuff all the time where I just want

  676. to fall into it. But I have to stay in His word.

  677. Sometimes I just say stuff out loud in my car.

  678. Go for a walk. I just talk to God.

  679. Just start quoting stuff. Why?

  680. That's the one way that you. Resist the devil, use this word,

  681. use it correctly, and be. Alert by staying close.

  682. To Christ, we pray for us. So Jesus, we love you.
