1 Timothy 6:6-11 | How to be Rich.

1 Timothy 6:6–10

verses 6 through 10 and then verses 17 through 19.

First Timothy 6, verses 6 through 10, and verses 1718.

1 Timothy 6:6–10

The sermon today, we're going to call it How to Get Rich, right,

How to get how to be truly, truly rich.

And that probably caught your attention.

Everybody woke you up there for a minute.

And that's OK That's OK. It's not.

It's not false advertising. All right.

And all right, so this week as I was preparing, I Googled how to

get rich, right? Because I wanted to see what the

Internet and AI said about how to get rich.

And there was this article that's it was 25 weird ways to

make money, 25 weird ways to make money.

So I'm not going to mention all 25.

I'm just going to mention those that that got my attention that

sounded interesting to me. So here are some of those.

All right, number one, I sell your hair.

Sell your hair and you get more money if it's untreated, right?

And you'll know what that means. If not, you can look it up,

right? So you get more money if your

hair is untreated. So sell your hair.

Second, become a professional sleeper, all right?

And some of you really love that idea, right?

Become a professional. So you mean I can do it, I can

get paid. You know companies, you know,

they want to test mattresses, they want to test a sleep

patterns, etcetera. NASA has paid over $18,000 to

for people to stay in bed for months so they can study right

the effects of space in the human body, $18,000 just to

sleep. Wow.

Third, I know my wife loves that 1/3 become a simulated patient,

right? You know, to test new

treatments, to trade a treat of medications, test medications

and some companies pay hundreds enough thousands of dollars for

that but no thank you not for me for sale haunted items, HAUNTED,

haunted items. So basically just make up a

story and sell something, right? Somebody's going to buy it,

right? And then next, rent out your

voice for wake up calls. All right?

Who needs wake up calls anymore, right?

We got this thing called alarms on our phones.

But hey, some people make money doing that.

And next, which I really, really like this one, but not for me to

do it, but for me to pay somebody to do it.

Become a line sitter, right? Just to stand in line and I'll

wait for you. These are actually things that

you can look, you can. I heard about this before.

Prior to this week. There's this big, big time BBQ

place in Austin. I think it's Franklin's BBQ or

something like that where Andrew knows, right?

Have you stood in line there for like hours and hours since the

early hours in the morning? Yeah.

But you can pay people to stand in line and wait for you.

And I, I would pay somebody to do that.

I hate waiting in line. Everybody with me, hey, waiting

in line, especially in the government DMV or anything like

that. And I just, I'll pay somebody to

do it. And the last one that's kind of

disgusting for me is sell your toenail clippings.

Oh, right. That's, that's just nasty.

Sell your toenail clippings. This is an actual article that

just came out, right? See, some people buy toenail

clippings to make crafts or, you know, they have personal

collections of toenail clippings and you know, they even do

science experiments with toenail clippings.

Like, no, I draw the lines. I got to draw the line

somewhere. One that's just so some people

always and even today are willing to do anything to make

money, anything to make money. So this morning we'll talk about

that, but also how to be truly, truly, truly rich.

God, thank you for this time. Thank you for your word.

God, I pray that as we begin that you open our minds, open

our hearts so that we let you break any walls that are inside

our minds, inside our hearts and just kind of speak to us.

And as you speak to us, God, I pray that you, we respond to you

because you don't speak to us out of pure coincidence, just

because you got nothing else to do.

You speak to us so that we can respond and be transformed by

you. In the name of Jesus, we pray,

Amen. All right, so number one, to be

truly rich, I must be content with what I already have.

To be truly rich, I must be content with what I already

have. So first Timothy chapter 6 verse

1 Timothy 6:6

6, this is Paul writing to Timothy and he says Timothy

godliness with contempt is great gain.

The new living translation puts it a differently says true

godliness with contentment is itself great wealth Again start

talking really about money there, but it is great wealth,

great riches. See in verse 3 to 5, Paul is

writing Timothy about greedy false teachers, right?

That all they wanted to do was win an argument, all they care

about was themselves and they wanted to make more money. 9

verses 6 through 8 Paul says that there's only only great

gain only great wealth, not speaking about material things.

Really there's only Great War reward in being godly if you are

content. So in other words, you can't be

godly if you are not content. So being godly means that we are

being more like God, that we we show the character of God.

Being content has to do with an attitude of mind that is

dependent only on God. That no matter what's going on,

I am satisfied with my circumstances, no matter what

those are. That is contentment.

If my main needs are covered, I should be at peace.

My sufficiency depends on the sufficiency of God.

I have enough because He is enough, right?

I have enough because He is enough.

See, Paul knew what he was talking about.

One mentioned earlier, Philippians chapter 4, we're

Philippians 4 · chapter mention

going to read 11 to 13. Philippians 411 to 13, he was in

prison and he was in prison enough because of something bad

he did. He was in prison because he had

been preaching and telling people about Jesus Christ and

him as a savior of the world. So he wrote these words.

Philippians 411 to 13 says I'm not saying this because I am in

need, for I have learned to be content whatever the

circumstances. I know what it is to be need and

I know what it is to have plenty.

I have learned the secret of being content in any and every

situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty

or in want. And then he gives you the secret

for being content. He says I can do all things

through him, through Christ who gives me strength.

That was the secret for his contentment Jesus, that he could

do everything through Christ who gave him strength.

Is that your mindset today? Can you say what Paul said?

I have learned to be content in whatever the circumstances, in

any and every situation, whether living in plenty or in one.

I can do all things through him. Who gives me strength.

If not, my prayer is that you leave here today making that

your prayer to God. You're you're the way you see

life. I like verses 7 and eight First

Timothy 6 connected to this idea of contentment.

First Timothy 6 verses 7 and 8, it says for we brought nothing

1 Timothy 6:7

to the world and we can take nothing out of the world.

But if we have food and clothing, if we have our basics

need, basic needs met, he says we will be content with that.

We will be satisfied with that. We will be at peace with that.

If my main needs are met, sometimes someone dies and you

hear people say, let me have asked you this.

Now you're at a funeral memorial service.

And some of them come to you and say, hey, so why did why did he

or she leave? Or how much did he or she leave?

See the answer to that question should always be the same.

They left everything right because you can't take anything

with you. Pastor Ricky said it last week.

You never see a U-Haul right connected to a hearse.

You don't don't see that because you cannot take your stuff with

you. Someone was going to be all like

really, I can't. You can't.

No one can see an ancient Egypt and other places there was this

custom of burying people with their possessions.

You probably seen that in TV's, in movies, documentaries about

mummies and all that stuff. And that's in that costume was

called grave goods. Grave goods.

That sounds like a really cool business name, right?

Maybe that 26th way to make you get rich Grave goods.

I can see one putting a business I call grave goods.

So see, the idea was to place inside the tomb, inside the

grave, anything and anyone that may help the dead in the

afterlife, right? So they wanted you to be alright

after you die. I want to make sure you had

everything you need after you die.

So they would throw in everything there, the Pharaohs

where we're buried with wealth, with food, and they were buried

even with living servants, right?

They wouldn't kill their servants and throw them in there

with the pharaoh, right? Bury them, bury them alive

because they wanted to help the Pharaoh afterlife.

But again, the pastor Rickey said last week, you never see a

U-Haul behind hers. Now listen, all this that we're

talking about the last few weeks, it doesn't mean that you

shouldn't save for a rainy day. It doesn't mean that you

shouldn't save for an emergency. It doesn't mean that you

shouldn't save for something that that you need and you want

to save for it because you don't want to put it in on the visa,

right? That's not what we're talking

about. But if if your motivation, my

motivation is to get, get, get and to keep, keep, keep because

we're not happy with what we have now, we will never be happy

and we will miss out on God's purpose for your life and my

life. Contentment is not having

something, it's not having all you want, it's wanting all you

have. It's not having all you want is

wanting all you have. Now what you've been given that

contentment, It's really an issue of the heart.

I don't know if you heard about the dog that he had a bone in

his mouth and he was just walking around going over a

bridge. He looked to the side and he saw

what he thought was another dog with a bone in his mouth.

And what did the dog do? He wanted the other dog's bone.

So he let his bone go to grab take away the other dog's bone,

just to realize that it was just an illusion, but it was not

real. But he lost all he had.

So don't let greed, don't let envy take away wrath from you of

the precious things, the precious people that you have in

your life. You don't know what you have

till it's gone. And the grass is not always

greener on the other side. And if it looks like it's

greener, it's probably fake. Are all your main needs, man?

Are all your main needs, man? If so, like Paul said, be

content with that. Be content with that and you

will be truly, truly rich. Next, to be truly rich, I must

avoid putting money first. I must avoid putting money

first. Verses 9 and 10 First Timothy 6

to Those who want to get rich, fall into temptation and a trap

bondage, and into many foolish, senseless, harmful, hurtful

desires that plunge people them and others into ruin and

destruction. For the love of money is a root

of all kinds of evil. Some people, Paul says, eager

for money, have wander from the faith and Pierce themselves with

many griefs. Team versus 9 and 10.

Paul is speaking to those that want to get rich, but there's

words that's used there. It's talking about those that

want to get rich at any cost, and they want to get rich as

fast as possible. Because of that, they fall into

temptation, a trap, and into many foolish, harmful, hurtful

things that plunge them and others into ruin and

destruction. That word plunge there, what it

means, it's when you're plunging into a deep, into the deep, like

a sinking ship, or you're being dragged to the bottom of the

ocean into ruin and what else? Destruction.

So it goes from bad ruin to worse destruction.

Tough words, right? I mean, you've probably seen

this happen in your life or someone else's life.

You know, making more money at all costs is painful for me and

for other people. The price to pay is too high.

Are you sure you want to pay it? Bersten says the love of money

is what is the root of all kinds of evil.

I don't know about you, but that that phrase scares me.

All kinds evil. Now is he saying that money is

the root of all kinds of evil? No, what is he saying?

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

It says a root doesn't say the root.

So there's other things that serve as root to all kinds of

evil. The Greek word for that phrase,

love of money, literally means love of silver, right?

Love of silver, which is what they used, made the ancient

Greek silver coins and it refers to an unhealthy, excessive

affection or fondness of money, not money itself.

An unhealthy excessive affection or fondness of money.

Money is a resource and it can be a blessing, but the love of

money can have the opposite result.

You know what I think of when I hear the phrase the love of

money? Can you put the picture up?

That's a Gollum from the Lord of the Rings movies.

Anybody, everybody has not seen the Lord of the Rings movies.

Have not seen them. Joseph, for real.

All right, y'all, y'all got to really watch.

It's like the some of the best movies you'll ever, ever, ever

see. The long, I get it, the long.

But they're awesome. Now when I watch the Lord of the

Rings movies, you know what I do?

I I skip all the Garland parts because I just absolutely hate

God. And if you want to know what I'm

talking about, just go watch the the movies.

But he's a perfect examples of the consequences of unhealthy

and unhealthy excessive affection for something or

someone that is not God. Because all hell literally

breaks loose, but you have unhealthy, excessive affections

for something or someone that is not God.

It leads to what all kinds of evil.

There's plenty of examples of this, but if you're a sports

fan, you know the, the, you know the recent betting gambling

scandal that an NBA coach, NBA players involved in, They're

millionaires, but somehow they want more.

Many wealthy people think they can get away with anything and

own everyone, which leads to foolish and hurtful things just

because they're not satisfied. Someone was saying, Oh yeah, but

that don't apply to us. That doesn't happen just to the

rich. The last part of verse stands

says some people eager for money have wander from the faith and

Pierce themselves with many grieves.

People was talking about people in the church at that point or

that have been at the church in the church or to that point.

People like you and me that put money first at any cost and

brought a lot of pain to themselves and others.

But listen, if that is you, you got to stop living that way

right now. You got to repent of your sin.

You got to ask for forgiveness of God and anyone else that you

may have hurt in the process, and if necessary, look for

professional help. See, the Lord wants to do mighty

things in you and through you. But the balls on your court,

right? Revelation 3/20/21, it says that

he's at the door of our hearts knocking.

But it's up to me to open the door of my heart and let him

come in and spend time with me and transform me and change me.

But I got to be the one that opens the door. 3rd, to be

really truly rich, put your hope in God.

Verse 17. For your helping God says

command those who are rich in this present world not to be

arrogant, high minded or proud, not to put their hope in wealth

or money, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God who

richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

See Paul is not writing to those that are actually rich right

versus none and 10 those that wanted to be rich.

I wanted to do it, you know, whatever it takes, you know, in

a rush. Now he's speaking to those in

the church that were rich. Are you might say, Brother

Gabriel, can you skip this part? Because none of us are rich.

First of all, how do you know, right?

But second, compared to most people in the world, guess what?

We are rich. If if you've been anywhere other

than the United States, you certainly know that.

So this applies to us as well. All right.

What are Paul's commands to the rich?

What are Paul's commands to us? First, don't be arrogant.

Don't be proud or high minded. In other words, don't think more

about yourself than you should, or don't think that you deserve

everything that you have. Be humble, right?

Puerto Rico, they would say. Don't think you're the last Coke

in the desert, not the Crescent. Coca-Cola desert sounds better

in Spanish. Second, don't put your hope.

Don't put your faith in money. Don't.

Why? Because it's possessive.

It's uncertain, right? It's uncertain it's here today,

but it may be gone tomorrow. You can't put your faith in

money, unlike God, right? He ain't going anywhere.

But it's so easy to get away from that, from putting a hope

in God, which is the third one. No, we it's easy to trust

everything and everyone else for 1st.

And if all else fails, then we trust God.

But why is he our? Why is he our last resource,

right, when all he wants is to give you everything that you

need? You're not everything that you

want. All he wants is to give you

everything that you really absolutely need.

I like that last phrase speaking about God says who richly

provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

See, when God provides something, he doesn't do it

poorly, He does it richly right. When God provides something, he

doesn't provide somethings, He provides everything.

When God provides something, it's not to make us miserable,

but it's for us to enjoy His blessings, enjoying His will and

His purpose. Lastly, to be truly rich, to

fully engage, enjoy God's blessings, we must do good and

be generous, must do good and be generous.

Verse 18. Again, this is Paul's telling

Timothy what to command. The rich among them says Command

them to the good to be rich in good deeds and to be generous

and to be what willing to share 4 commands there to the good.

To be rich in good deeds, to be generous and to be willing to

share to the good involves using wealth in a positive way instead

of instead of letting it feed a life of luxury.

To be rich in good deeds points the rich in the direction of the

needy, the others, those less fortunate.

To be generous demands liberal, free sharing others and then be

willing. The word there is be ready to

share. Who here by nature likes to

share like you really love to share?

There's some people are actually like that and man, that's a

blessing, right, that you are willing to share.

It's funny how how we're more willing to share when we have a

lot than when we have little, right?

You know, when you have a lot is like, sure, I'll share, I'll get

half of it because I got a lot. But then when we have little, I

don't know if I should really share or not.

Because if I share, what happens?

I mean, I think, right, if I share that I may not have enough

of myself. It's human nature.

What's one of the first thing that parents try to teach their

kids? Mijo mija, listen, you have to

share. And we say over and over again,

right, Because that's the human tendency in all of us.

And God tells us the same thing. Today you have I have to share.

And not just when I have a lot. There's always someone that has

less than you. Don't forget that.

There's always, always someone that has less than you.

And you said nobody has less than me.

There's always someone that has less than you and you can share

the word. Therefore willing to share is

Koinonia, which speaks about fellowship and community, right

of reading those first few chapters in the book of Acts

about how Christians, the early church, share everything as part

of their fellowship and communion with God and with each

other. We must give what we have, but

also our hearts ourselves. And you say, but but why?

Why is that right? Can it isn't enough for me just

to give my money? No, it's not enough because God

more than anything, he wants you to give your heart.

Love requires both that we give of what I have and that I give

of myself. I know some things happen.

We can bless a lot of people, yes, when we give what we have,

but even more when we give of ourselves to serve others, to

help others in the name of Jesus Christ.

And if the rich did this, Paul said in verse 19, I like this

last part of the verse. They will lay out for themselves

a firm foundation for the future, for that they may take

hold of the life that is truly life.

So if they did good, if they were rich in good deeds, if they

were generous, if they were willing to share, they will get

to trade the uncertain for the certain right they will get.

They will get to trade the temporal, the temporary for the

eternal. They will get to trade treasures

on earth for treasures in heaven.

That's a great deal, no? Jesus said in Matthew 7.

Matthew 619 to 21. Pastor Ricky shared this with us

last week, Mark Matthew 6/19/21 I'm almost done.

So you'll keep up with me or stay, Stay up with me.

Matthew 6/19/21 says do not store for up for yourselves

treasures on earth where moths and vermin destroy and where

thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves what

treasures in heaven? Treasures in heaven, where moths

and vermin did not destroy and where thieves did not break in

and steal. For where your treasure is,

there your heart will be. Also.

Anyone here heard about layaway right?

Like in Walmart right? Kmart man layaway is awesome

right? That was the best our parents

used to. We used to for the kids when

they were little, Layaway Rock, right?

Walmart discounted like in 2021 before the holiday season for

some reason. But you know, nowadays, nowadays

we just charge it right after Christmas.

We're, we're broken. We're trying to worry how we,

how we're going to pay everything that we just bought

with our card, right? But for those of you that don't

know what layaway is, basically you will go to Walmart, right?

You would get a big, big shopping cart.

They would throw in there, put in there all the gifts for your

whole family, right? Then you will go back to where

the service area is and you would tell, hey, I want to put

this in layaway. So they would actually take it

and lay it away for you somewhere in the store, right?

They wouldn't put it back. And then you needed, you would

make payments on it. Like little by little you will

go all the way to Walmart, right?

Yeah, man knows what I'm talking about, right.

And then, you know, just you put 20 bucks this week and 50 bucks

next week. You know, I think it was like

for three months or something like that.

It wasn't like a whole year thing, right?

And and then whenever you finally pay it all, praise the

Lord, right? Take it home with you and you

know you could enjoy your family, you know your kids, your

grandkids could enjoy it. And those were the days, right?

Layaway was awesome. So I would love for them to

bring it back. So Paul is saying to the rich,

listen to layaway treasure in heaven.

You must give it away here, right?

The layaway, treasure in heaven, you must give it away here.

And some, some of us that don't make sense, right?

But that's the way it works in the Kingdom of God.

You want to have treasure in heaven, you got to give away

treasure here. We don't know really when the

Bible talks about treasure in heaven, what that all means.

No one has come back to tell us that.

It must be pretty awesome, but you can rest assured.

But if God says that you give it away here, you'll have treasures

in heaven. You will have treasures in

heaven. At that point, when I'm in

heaven, I'm not going to care what that treasure is.

I'm going to be excited that I'm in heaven, that I get to be with

Jesus for all eternity and all is well and good.

I have nothing else to worry about.

Our future is not in this world. If you're a follower of Jesus,

your future is in the presence of God, and the events will need

heaven and the earth if not. If you're not a follower of

Jesus, your future is in hell, eternally separated from God.

Complete opposite. There's no happy medium.

So where do you want to lay your foundation?

What do you want to lay your home when the time comes?

It's your choice. Someone said money will buy a

bed but not sleep. It will buy books but not

brains. It will buy food but not

appetite. It will buy a house, but it

won't buy a home. It will buy medicine, but it

won't buy healthy, Buy amusement but it won't buy a joy.

It will buy religion but not salvation, and it will buy a

passport to everywhere but heaven.

So true. I love the last part of verse

919. I'm sorry.

So that they may take hold of life that is truly life.

The Greek says that they may take hold of life that is indeed

life, like the real life that comes when we're done with the

Lord face to face. See, Google AI says that to get

rich, it's what it says to get rich.

And these are pretty good advice.

I think we must focus on consistent savings, smart

investing, increasing our income, and living below our

means. Now, the Bible says that to be

truly rich, we must be content with what I already have.

I must not put money first. I must put my hope in God and I

must do good and be generous. Was a reward a personal

relationship with Jesus right here, right now that last for

all eternity? Do you have that?

Do you have the personal relationship with Jesus right

here, right now that last for all eternity?

Do you want that today? So really, we are rich.

See, I'm rich when I wake up in the morning and lie down to

sleep in the bed with a roof over my head.

I'm rich when I go for a walk with my wife.

I'm rich when I get to be home with my family.

I'm rich when I go to work and get paid.

I'm rich. When I get to spend time with

friends and brothers and sisters in Christ, eating great food,

sharing laughs, and studying the Word.

I'm rich when I get to have the freedom of speech or freedom of

religion to gather in a place like this and worship the living

Christ with others. I'm rich in having a personal

relationship with Jesus that gives meaning to my life now and

hope for the future. There's no greater treasure than

that. If we are in Jesus, we are rich

in the way that really matters. If I'm in Jesus, if you're in

Jesus, if you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you are

rich in the way that really matters.

Everything else doesn't. So as we wrap up, I just want to

ask you to close your eyes by your head for a minute.

I'm asked abandoned to come up, you know, take this time to pray

to God with all your heart as got to forgive you if you not

being satisfied with what you have right now.

You have not been content as got to forgive you if you realize

you've been putting money first no matter what it costs, and as

got to help you to put our your hope completely in Him and to

help you the good and be generous and lay up treasures in

heaven where it really matters. And if you're here and you want

to give your life to Jesus so that you can have the personal

relationship with him, we want to invite you to come up as the

music players. We'd love to pray with you.

We'd love to guide you in that decision so that you leave here

today laying out the right treasures in heaven.

And if you already have a personal relationship with Jesus
