  1. Jeramie: Well, welcome back to the SCC Saver podcast. Well, we are savoring God through every bite of scripture. I'm one of your co-hosts, Alan Smith, Pastoral Apprentice, Sanibel Community Church. I'm the other co-host, Jeremy Rennie, Senior Pastor, Sanibel Community Church. Jeremy, you look a little bit tanner. Yes. Where were you? A little more tired. A little more tired. We just got back from our staff retreat. We take two staff retreats here. One is in the fall, which is kind of a planning preparation.

  2. Allen Smith: Welcome back to the SCC Saver podcast. We are savoring God through every bite of scripture. I'm one of your co-hosts, Alan Smith, pastor, all apprentice, Sanibel Community Church. I'm the other co-host, Jeremy Rennie, senior pastor, Sanibel Community Church. Jeremy, you look a little bit tanner. Yes. Where were you? A little more tired. A little more tired. We just got back from our staff retreat. We take two staff retreats here. One is in the fall, which is kind of a planning preparation. here we go, let's make sure we're on the same page. And then we do a spring one after high season, after Easter, where we kind of look back on just like, hey, what's God done? So it's really more of a kind of relational, connecting, celebrating retreat. So it's a lot of fun. Yeah, tons of fun. One of the big highlights of that was we sat down in the living room, you put up big white Post-it boards and we just wrote out with, you wrote out with Sharpie as we just talked about what God did.

  3. Jeramie: here we go, let's make sure we're on the same page. And then we do a spring one after high season, after Easter, where we kind of look back on just like, hey, what's God done? So it's really more of a kind of like relational, connecting, celebrating retreat. it's a lot of fun. Yeah, tons of fun. One of the big highlights of that was we sat down in the living room, you put up big white Post-it boards and we just wrote out with, you wrote out with Sharpie as we just talked about what God did. in our congregation and it's like, okay, we had one sheet and then it was a second sheet and then it was a third sheet and the fourth sheet, it's like, we're gonna run out of paper here. Because God has just done so much in our church. And the more we thought about it, the more we're like, oh yeah, he started this, he did that. And actually, we used that as an email that was sent out to the church just to remind people of all the things God's done this year. Which is, one of the ways we worship God is to mark and remember his deeds. Amen. Yeah, mark and remember his deeds.

  4. Allen Smith: in our congregation. And it's like, okay, we had one sheet, and then it was a second sheet, and then it was a third sheet, and then it a fourth sheet. It's like, we're going to run out of paper here. Before we hop into our regular scheduled program of walking through the text, me one major highlight. Like, know amazing all of them, but there's one thing that really stood out, like man, God really did this and I've been reflecting and thinking about this. This year? Yeah. I think it's for me the intangible of the spirit of unity, happiness, and joy that is pervading our staff and our church. Yeah.

  5. Jeramie: Before we hop into our regular scheduled program of walking through the text, me one major highlight. Like, know amazing all of them, but there's one thing that really stood out, like man, God really did this and I've been reflecting and thinking about this. This year? Yeah. I think it's for me the intangible of the spirit of unity, happiness, and joy that is pervading our staff and our church. Yeah.

  6. Allen Smith: You you feel it in the members meetings. You just sense it in all the conversations. It's like in and it's I think it's the healthiest and happiest our church has been since I've been here. That's great. Yeah. Praise God. And that's just all God. Yeah. I mean, I can't there's not like some program we did to make it that way. Yeah, right. Yeah. And this was the conclusion of my four months here. And I feel I just like I jumped in and I was like, dude, this is the coolest thing ever. Just run. I've seen so much in four months of the intangible intangible. And I've only been here that long. So.

  7. Jeramie: You you feel it in the members meetings. So.

  8. Allen Smith: Thankful to be here at this time. Church, you're amazing. Love you guys. Hey, and you guys have a spiritual hunger for the Word. That was something that we actually, it was a win that we wrote up there. That was a win we wrote up there. So, spiritual hunger for the Word. So, let's get into what people are here for. Yeah, that's right. Month four, days 20 through 25. And so, you wrapped up Judges, read all of Ruth. You read Mark 8 through 9, and then Psalms 89 through 94.

  9. Jeramie: Thankful to be here at this time.

  10. Allen Smith: And then first Corinthians 13 through 16. So you wrap those up. So we're going to start. just just judges. Just a quick brief note as you see the full display of the depravity of Israel's sin and just the downward spiral all the way to the end. Yeah. just ends darkly. Yeah. It's really it's like, you know, they're killing the Benjamites and the Civil War breaks out. Yeah. Yeah. It actually this is interesting. It echoes Sodom and Gomorrah.

  11. Jeramie: And then first Corinthians 13 through 16. So you wrap those up. So we're going to start. I just just judges. Just a quick brief note as you see the full display of the depravity of Israel's sin and just the downward spiral all the way to the end. Yeah. It just ends darkly. Yeah. It's really. It's like, you know, they're killing the Benjamites and the Civil War breaks out. Yeah. Yeah. It actually this is interesting. It echoes Sodom and Gomorrah.

  12. Allen Smith: in Genesis 19 at the end where it's just like, you see, that's the full display of the depravity of man and that's how the book ends. So it just recalls the sinfulness of man. verse 25 of the very last verse of the very last chapter of that book is, in those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did whatever seemed right to him. So when the people don't live under the authority of God's Word and God's King, and there is no king, this is what it looks like. It's just, you know, disillusioned morally and in the fabric of society.

  13. Jeramie: in Genesis 19 at the end where it's just like, you see that's the full display of the depravity of man and that's how the book ends. Yeah. Yeah. But that brings us to Ruth. That does bring us to Ruth. Tell us a little bit about Ruth. Ruth is just a beautifully crafted narrative story. yeah. I would preach through Ruth a couple of years ago. It's so great. And interestingly, Ruth is kind of a hopeful note in the Judges. I mean, it starts in chapter one, verse one, during the time of the Judges. Yeah. So in the midst of all this mess, here's this new thing that God is doing. Yeah.

  14. Allen Smith: Yeah. Yeah.

  15. Jeramie: It's a contrast to what we saw as unfaithfulness. And now we're going to see here's God's faithfulness amidst all the unfaithfulness. And that's really a theme and story that you've been reading with us. That's the entire story. People are unfaithful. God is faithful. And so we see a few different characters that highlight God's kind of faithfulness and provision. Who are those characters and then how are they going to play out in the rest of the book? So you have Naomi, who in some ways is kind of the embodiment of Israel.

  16. Allen Smith: It's a contrast to what we saw as unfaithfulness.

  17. Jeramie: ⁓ She is, you know, bitter. This is Israel in the time of the judges. you know, everyone's died. She has no future. She has no offspring. She's a hopeless woman. And then you have Ruth, who's this fascinating Moabite figure who essentially converts to the religion of Yahweh, the God of Israel. Yeah, it says in here 16, but Ruth said, do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you.

  18. Allen Smith: ⁓ She is, you know, bitter.

  19. Jeramie: for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge, your people shall be my people and your God, my God." And so she declares the God of Israel as, hey, I'm gonna, it's called proselytization, she's gonna attract or attach herself to the faithfulness of Israel, of their God. Yeah, that's right. So she leaves Moab, she becomes essentially an Israelite by confession and commitment.

  20. Allen Smith: for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge, your people shall be my people and your God, my God." And so she declares the God of Israel as, hey, I'm gonna, it's called proselytization, she's gonna attract or attach herself to the faithfulness of Israel, of their God. Yeah, that's right. So she leaves Moab, she becomes essentially an Israelite by confession and commitment. And even like, you know, again, Boaz says to her in chapter 2 verse 12, may the Lord reward you for what you've done and may you receive a full reward. Here we go. From the Lord God of Israel under whose wings you have come for refuge. So she has left her gods and she has come to take her refuge and put her faith in the God of Israel. And so I think Ruth is the noble woman of faith whose faith propels her

  21. Jeramie: And even like, you know, again, Boaz says to her in chapter 2 verse 12, may the Lord reward you for what you've done and may you receive a full reward. Here we go. From the Lord God of Israel under whose wings you have come for refuge. So she has left her gods and she has come to take her refuge and put her faith in the God of Israel. And so I think Ruth is the noble woman of faith whose faith propels her into action to care for Naomi. Yeah, exactly right. Which is interesting is in some of ancient traditions, know, kind of the Jewish ordering of the Old Testament and the Tanakh is many of them place Ruth right after Proverbs 31 because she is an embodiment and picture of the faithful woman, of the noble woman in 311. It says that in 10 and 11, may you be blessed by the Lord my daughter, you have made this last kindness greater than the first and that you have not gone

  22. Allen Smith: into action to care for Naomi.

  23. Jeramie: after young men, whether poor or rich, and now my daughter, do not fear, for I will do for you all that ye ask, for all my fellow townsmen, know that you are a worthy woman." Or some translations, noble woman. And that's exactly what Proverbs 31, 10 says, she's the noble woman. Right. And then that third character then that we just mentioned is Boaz. And Boaz is the Redeemer, because technically then, so within Israelite law, the husband

  24. Allen Smith: after young men, whether poor or rich, and now my daughter, do not fear, for I will do for you all that ye ask, for all my fellow townsmen, know that you are a worthy woman." Or some translations, noble woman. And that's exactly what Proverbs 31, 10 says, she's the noble woman. And then that third character then that we just mentioned is Boaz. And Boaz is the Redeemer, because technically then, so within Israelite law, the husband

  25. Jeramie: of Naomi who died. Then she had two sons, they both died, they had no sons. So there's a possibility that Naomi's deceased husband's inheritance in the land, we're talking about inheritance, is going to disappear and be given to relatives. So it's kind of like he'll be snuffed out within the the lineages of Israel. And so what Boaz is going to do is he's going to redeem Elimelech's line.

  26. Allen Smith: of Naomi who died. Then she had two sons, they both died, they had no sons. So there's a possibility that Naomi's deceased husband's inheritance in land, we're talking about inheritance, is going to disappear and be given to relatives. So it's kind of like he'll be snuffed out within the the lineages of Israel. ⁓ And so what Boaz is going to do is he's going to redeem Elimelech's line.

  27. Jeramie: by marrying Ruth, and then he's gonna, the child they have will be given to Naomi as counting as one of Naomi's children so that the lineage will continue. So it's kind of redeeming someone who's gonna be lost. And so you get this great kind of romantic kind of heroic story. mean, Boaz is just, he's a man. He just goes to town. And I love when Ruth asks him to marry her, essentially.

  28. Allen Smith: by marrying Ruth, and then he's gonna, the child they have will be given to Naomi as counting as one of Naomi's children so that the lineage will continue. So it's kind of redeeming someone who's gonna be lost. And so you get this great kind of romantic kind of heroic story. mean, Boaz is just, he's a man. He just goes to town. And I love when Ruth asks him to marry her, essentially. and he goes to town and Naomi says at the end there literally and figuratively goes to town. Naomi says to Ruth, my daughter, wait until you find out how things go for he won't rest until he resolves this today. The Redeemer rises up.

  29. Jeramie: and he goes to town, and Naomi says at the end, or literally and figuratively goes to town, Naomi says to Ruth, my daughter, wait until you find out how things go, for he won't rest until he resolves this today. The Redeemer rises up and does what's needed to be done to save, and what a picture of Christ.

  30. Allen Smith: and does what's needed to be done to save. And what a picture of Christ, who is our Redeemer, who is like, he would not rest until he had done what was necessary to save us. that's so good. And that's actually, it's so cool because he does. He rises up this Redeemer, he doesn't rest, so does what is right. And then at the end of the book, you get something that is ⁓ major important in the history of Jesus' lineage.

  31. Jeramie: who's our Redeemer, who is like, he would not rest until he had done what was necessary to save Yeah, that's so good. And that's actually, it's so cool because he does, he rises up this Redeemer, he doesn't rest, he does what is right. And then at the end of the book, you get something that is ⁓ major important in the history of Jesus' lineage. Because it says, Boaz took Ruth, became his wife, this is 13, and he went into her and the Lord gave her conception, she bore a son, and the woman said to Naomi, blessed be the Lord who has not left you

  32. Allen Smith: Right because it says Boaz took Ruth became his wife This is 13 and he went into her and the Lord gave her conception She bore a son and the woman said to Naomi blessed be the Lord who has not left you This day without a redeemer and may his name be renowned in Israel and then at the end you have the genealogy of David which is lit in 18 through 22 where the child that Boaz and Ruth have goes to Naomi and then that child becomes the you know, whatever great-great-great-grandfather of

  33. Jeramie: this day without a redeemer and may his name be renowned in Israel. And then at the end you have the genealogy of David, which is lit in 18 through 22. ⁓ So the child that Boaz and Ruth have goes to Naomi and then that child becomes the, you know, whatever, great, great, great grandfather of King David. Yeah. So you, you begin the book with in the time of judges, you end the book with the King, King David who comes, who will be

  34. Allen Smith: King David. So you begin the book with, in the time of judges, you end the book with the King, King David who comes, who will be the father of Jesus through whom we will be redeemed. Yeah, that's exactly right. So you see just the amazing providence of God to redeem and use this like really out of place marriage relationship and sonship to bring about the Redeemer, the final Redeemer who will redeem

  35. Jeramie: the Father of Jesus through whom we will be redeemed. Yeah, that's exactly right. So you see just the amazing providence of God to redeem and use this like really out of place marriage relationship and sonship to bring about the Redeemer, the final Redeemer who will redeem his people in just a beautiful picture of God working through ordinary human means to redeem and bring about redemption for his people.

  36. Allen Smith: His people in just a beautiful picture of God working through ordinary human means to redeem and bring about redemption for His people. Psalm 93, going to the Psalms, was my Psalm this week. ⁓ Actually, it kind of connected to being on staff retreat. We were in Captiva, just like seeing the beauty of creation there. And ⁓ in Psalm 93, it begins this way, the Lord reigns, He's robed in majesty, the Lord is robed in vellatant strength.

  37. Jeramie: Psalm 93, going to the Psalms, was my Psalm this week. ⁓ Actually, it kind of connected to being on staff retreat. We were in Captiva, just like seeing the beauty of creation there. in ⁓ Psalm 93, it begins this way, the Lord reigns, He's robed in majesty, the Lord is robed. Invelped in strength, this is the line, the world is firmly established, it cannot be shaken. Your throne has been established from the beginning, you're from eternity. So...

  38. Allen Smith: This is the line, the world is firmly established, it cannot be shaken. Your throne has been established from the beginning, you're from eternity. So the psalmist is comparing the firmly establishedness of the earth and the world with God's throne. And to spend a couple days out in creation, we're out in the boat, we're on the water, just like seeing the earth and being like, it's so, people come, people go.

  39. Jeramie: The psalmist is comparing the firmly establishedness of the earth and the world with God's throne. And, you know, to spend a couple days, like, out in creation, we're out in the boat, we're on the water, just like seeing the earth and being like, man, it's so, you know, people come, people go, but there's the sun rising, there's the islands. And to think, like, God's reign over this world is as solid or more solid than the earth itself.

  40. Allen Smith: but there's the sun rising, there's the islands. And to think like God's reign over this world is as solid or more solid than the earth itself. And so we can trust Him that He's reigning and ruling. So anyway, kind of... I find sometimes when I'm out in creation for a long time, just texts like this about connecting creation and God just become so much more impactful for me.

  41. Jeramie: And so we can trust him that he's reigning and ruling. So anyway, kind of, sometimes when you're out, I find sometimes when I'm out in creation for a long time, like just texts like this about connecting creation and God just becomes so much more impactful for me. Yeah, it's amazing. Yeah, seriously. ⁓ I read a book one time, I think it's Play the Man by Mark Batterson. If you want to get to know...

  42. Allen Smith: Yeah, it's yeah, it's amazing. Yeah, seriously. Um, I read a book one time I think it's play the man by Mark baddison music if you want to get to know God get to know his creation because that's a part of his revelation It's just like you see God at work the book of creation. It's the book of creation. Like this is beautiful This is this is amazing My psalm was psalm 90. I saw him. Yeah great psalm Primarily because I was actually just teaching in Sunday school and so I was just doing a lot of meditation on this and right up front like how I'd name this is like

  43. Jeramie: God gets to know his creation because that's a part of his revelation. It's just like you see God at work. the book of creation. It's the book of creation. You're like, this is beautiful. This is is amazing. My Psalm was Psalm 90. Great Psalm. Yeah, great Psalm. Primarily because I was actually just teaching in Sunday school and so I was just doing a lot of meditation on this and right up front. Like how I would name this is like satisfaction in God, be satisfied in God. says, Lord, you've been our dwelling place. This is this is a prayer of Moses.

  44. Allen Smith: Satisfaction in God be satisfied in God says Lord you've been our dwelling place This is this is a prayer of Moses in all generations before the mountains were brought forth Wherever you had formed the earth and the world from everlasting everlasting your God. So even before creation He was there he brought he spoke creation into existence by the word of his power and he's gonna uphold and maintain so therefore from everlasting you can be satisfied in the eternal God and the rest of it actually is a little bit ⁓

  45. Jeramie: in all generations before the mountains were brought forth, wherever you had formed the earth and the world from everlasting everlasting your God." So even before creation, he was there. He brought, he spoke creation into existence by the word of his power and he's going to uphold and maintain. So therefore from everlasting you can be satisfied in the eternal God. And the rest of it actually is a little bit hard to read because you read, hey man is vain.

  46. Allen Smith: hard to read because you read, hey man is vain. He's going to die to the dust. He's going to return. And he says in 12, so teach us the number of days that we may gain or get a heart of wisdom, satisfies in the morning with your steadfast love that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. And then the end of it says, establish the work of our hands. Yes, establish the work of our hands. It's only work that is done for the Lord.

  47. Jeramie: ⁓ He's going to die to the dust. He's going to return and he says in 12, so teach us the number of days that we may gain or get a heart of wisdom, satisfies in the morning with your steadfast love that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. And then the end of it says, establish the work of our hands. Yes, establish the work of our hands. It's only work that is done from done for the Lord. that when we think about our days, think about how the Lord has given us to them, that's what makes our work meaningful. So it just gives hope. It's like, man, I labor not in vain, although I am just dust, but I labor only because of what God has done for me and He's my darling place forever.

  48. Allen Smith: that when we think about our days, think about how the Lord has given us to them, that's what makes our work meaningful. So it just gives hope. It's like, man, I labor not in vain, although I am just dust, but I labor only because of what God has done for me and He's my dwelling place forever.

  49. Jeramie: Gospel of Mark. Yeah, Mark. Critical section in Mark, if you're reading through Mark chapters eight and nine, if you think of Mark as kind of a story of two halves, ⁓ this is the hinge on which those two halves turn. ⁓ Because before this, the focus has been on the authority of Jesus. his identity as the authoritative king shown through his miracles, his exorcisms, blah, blah. Yeah.

  50. Allen Smith: Gospel of Mark. Critical section in Mark, if you're reading through Mark chapters eight and nine, if you think of Mark as kind of a story of two halves, ⁓ this is the hinge on which those two halves turn. ⁓ Because before this, the focus has been on the... ⁓ Authority of Jesus. Yeah, his identity as the authoritative king shown through his miracles, his exorcisms, blah, blah.

  51. Jeramie: all those things that he does. And so he's the king. And so you get the turning point when Jesus asks Mark, who do the people say I am? Who do you say I am? And he's like, you're the Christ. And he's like, bingo, you got it. But then the hinge is, what has this king come to do? And so starting in chapter eight, Jesus begins to let the disciples in on the secret that the king has come to die and the king is going to be...

  52. Allen Smith: all those things that he does.

  53. Jeramie: suffer, die, buried, and rise in the third day. And now Peter doesn't like that. He's like, no, he starts rebuking Jesus. And Jesus says, get behind me. Get behind me, Satan. So Peter gets the identity right, but he gets the mission wrong. And so, the rest of this, really until His crucifixion, the rest of Mark is going to be the unfolding of the mission.

  54. Allen Smith: suffer, die, buried, and rise in the third day. And now Peter doesn't like that. He's like, no, he starts rebuking Jesus. And Jesus says, get behind me. Get behind me, Satan. So Peter gets the identity right, but he gets the mission wrong. And so, the rest of this, really until His crucifixion, the rest of Mark is going to be the unfolding of the mission of the King is to die for our sins.

  55. Jeramie: the King is to die for our sins and save us. Which of course is hinted at throughout the book because Jesus is preaching repent. right. He's come to save us from our sins, but somehow they, I think they had a more of a political Messiah in mind. Yeah, totally. It's super interesting, like you said, how Peter understood his identity but misunderstood his mission and right after that he's going to foretell his death and resurrection again and Jesus turns this into a discipleship lesson to say, hey, if you're going to come after me,

  56. Allen Smith: Which of course is hinted at throughout the book, because Jesus is preaching, repent. He's come to save us from our sins. But somehow, I think they had more of political Messiah in mind. Yeah, totally. It's super interesting, like you said, how Peter understood his identity but misunderstood his mission. And right after that, he's going to foretell his death and resurrection again. And Jesus turns this into a discipleship lesson to say, hey, if you're going to come after me, you got to take up your cross and follow me, because if you save your life, you'll lose it. Whoever loses...

  57. Jeramie: You got to take up your cross and follow me because if you save your life, you'll lose it. Whoever loses his life for my sake in the Gospels will save it. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? And so he's going to say, hey, you're actually have to suffer with me. You're going to have to take up the call to do what I'm doing because that's not what they wanted. That's what they misunderstood was that he thought he was going to come reign. and and that's the foolish the foolishness of the gospel is that he came to be a servant suffering king and that all those whom

  58. Allen Smith: his life for my sake and the Gospels will save it. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? And so he's going to say, hey, you're actually have to suffer with me. You're going to have to take up the call to do what I'm doing because that's not what they wanted. That's what they misunderstood was that he thought he was going to come rain. and and it's the foolish the foolishness of the gospel is that he came to be a servant suffering king and that all those whom would follow after him must suffer with the Christ.

  59. Jeramie: would follow after him must suffer with the Christ. That's right, to take up our cross. So he redefines, you know, Christianity profoundly. ⁓ yeah, it's amazing. 73. Jeramie: the improper and misunderstanding of spiritual gifts. And this comes, this love, the chapter, know, love is patient, kind, it's not into your boast, is a correction or a rebuke to how they were seeing worship in spiritual gifts. That's right. They were at each other. There were factions. I follow Paul. I follow Paul. They were pitting gifts against each other. Yeah, that's right. The whole thing was just a big like episode of Survivor in this church where everyone's trying to outdo everyone and there's ambition and there's parties. Yeah.

And so yeah. Yeah love here's the correction love and actually what's interesting is at the beginning of his greeting in first Corinthians Normally Paul in his letters mentions. He's thankful for their love He doesn't say that in the very beginning and then cuz he he'll go through and make the correction about no You need to return to love because they were gifted church. Yeah

  76. Allen Smith: Yeah, that's right. And they're influenced by the pagan background and culture and they're they're mixing everything. He's like, no, hold on a minute. Yeah, here's the correction. And so yeah, yeah, love. Here's the correction. He doesn't say that in the very beginning. And then because he he'll go through and make the correction about, no, you need to return to love because they are a gifted church. Yeah.

  77. Jeramie: You know, it's so interesting, you get two churches in the Bible that are rebuked for their lack of love. One is 1 Corinthians 13. And the other is Revelation, the book, the Church of Ephesians. And it's interesting because the church in Ephesus is praised because of its doctrinal integrity, but they've lost their love. This church is praised because it has all the spiritual gifts, but they've lacked their love. So, you know, you can get lost and you can substitute doctrinal knowledge for love.

  78. Allen Smith: You know, it's so interesting, you get two churches in the Bible that are rebuked for their lack of love. One is 1 Corinthians 13. 79. Jeramie: you can also substitute emotion and spiritual gifts, but not have love. So, is the most excellent thing because someday, you know, we're not going to need Bible teachers teaching us doctrine. When we get to heaven, I hate to break this you, you will not need a podcast. You will not. You don't even need a Bible. You don't even need Bible. You won't even need pastors. But also, like when we get to heaven,

  81. The greatest of these is love. Well, let's hop in. What spiritual gifts were they misunderstanding, you know, namely prophecy, tongues, and why this correction and how should we understand these giftings? Yeah, you know, this is, of course, chapter 14 especially, and speaking in tongues and prophecy are topics that

Yeah, you know, this is, of course, chapter 14 especially, and speaking in tongues and prophecy are topics that

  83. Jeramie: that Christians can sometimes get passionate about, get confused about. You get different denominations because of different stances on You could read a million different views on this. Yeah, yeah. And I think chapter 14 is a lot about just, again, love. The important thing is, are you loving each other in the way you use these gifts? I think, you know, they were using the gifts in a competition with each other. Yeah, that's right. And instead, you know, who's like the most spiritual, who's the most gifted?

  84. Allen Smith: that Christians can sometimes get passionate about, get confused about. You get different denominations because of different stances on this. You could read a million different views on this. Yeah, yeah. And I think chapter 14 is a lot about just, again, love. And instead, you know, who's like the most spiritual, who's the most gifted?

  85. Jeramie: And Paul's like, guys, the whole point of these gifts is to edify the body. And the body's not being edified because you guys are competing. Yeah, exactly right. And that's his correction. Hey, there's variety of gifts, but the same spirit, variety of serves, but the same Lord. She's like, hey, same Lord, same spirit. Each one is given a gift ⁓ so that there's ⁓ one body, many members, right? One spirit. We're all baptized into Jews or Greeks or slave or free. She's like, hey, the body is not about all these different members. It's about one.

  86. Allen Smith: And Paul's like, guys, the whole point of these gifts is to edify the body. And the body's not being edified because you guys are competing. Yeah, exactly right. 87. Jeramie: body. And so, and he's going to make the argument, he's like, no one can say that, um, I have, I don't have use of you. don't, I don't need you. they were because they were like, well, I have this gift, so I don't need that gift. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Um, probably the other thing, uh, I get asked as a pastor is like, what, you know, what do you think about speaking in tongues? What do you think about prophecy? And usually what I try to do is, is try to break those two issues down by saying the key question interpretively is what is tongues and what is prophecy? Right.

  88. Allen Smith: body. And so, and he's going to make the argument, he's like, no one can say that, um, I have, I don't have use of you. don't, I don't need you. they were because they were like, well, I have this gift, so I don't need that gift. And usually what I try to do is, is try to break those two issues down by saying the key question interpretively is what is tongues and what is prophecy? Right.

  89. Jeramie: So, and you kind of have two answers to each on, this kind of the watershed issue that will send people down different trajectories of interpretation. So in tongues, one view is tongues was in the Bible speaking in another human language. Acts two. Acts two. The other view is tongues in the Bible was speaking another human language and or speaking in a kind of angelic language or

  90. Allen Smith: So, and you kind of have two answers to each on this kind of the watershed issue that will send people down different trajectories of interpretation. So in tongues, one view is tongues was in the Bible speaking in another human language. Acts 2. Acts 2. The other view is tongues in the Bible was speaking another human language and or... Speaking in a kind of angelic language or prayer language, right? Yeah, where it's not a human language Yeah, that's right. So so depending on what you think tongues were in the Bible. Yep. We'll send you down one of those That's right. That's right. Yeah. Yeah, so how should Christians understand maybe you know, cuz there's faithful brothers and sisters who who believe yeah, you know, obviously, I'm sure you have your opinions and views as do I but like

  91. Jeramie: prayer language, where it's not a human language. So depending on what you think tongues were in the Bible, we'll send you down one of those two paths. That's right. So how should Christians understand maybe, you know, because there's faithful brothers and sisters who believe, ⁓ you know, obviously I'm sure you have your opinions and views as do I, but like how can brothers and sisters maybe relate to Christians who think differently?

  92. Allen Smith: How can brothers and sisters maybe relate to Christians who think differently? I think it's an open-handed issue where if Christian A is like tongues in the Bible was speaking another human language, period. Well, everyone would have to affirm that though. What's that? Everyone has to affirm. But the question is people who are making, I don't mean this negatively, but gibberish. other words, it's not...

  93. Jeramie: I think it's an open-handed issue where if Christian A is like tongues in the Bible was speaking another human language, period. someone else... everyone would have to affirm that, though. What's that? Everyone has to affirm. But the question is, is people who are making... I don't mean this negatively, but gibberish. other words, it's not... idea what you're saying. They have no Unintelligable language. Yeah. And a linguist would listen to it and be like, there's no...

  94. Allen Smith: It's not a language. what you're saying. They have no Unintelligable language. And a linguist would listen to it and be like, there's no linguistic structure. I mean, that's what a lot of modern tongue speaking is. Linguists have analyzed it and there's no linguistic structure. Yeah. I think maybe a healthy way to approach this is like, anyone that, you know, even would claim angelic language is like, okay, look what Paul's correction even was. He says, hey, don't do it unless there's an interpreter. That's the key. Because it's about edification. It's about edification.

  95. Jeramie: Linguistic structure. I mean, that's what a lot of modern tongue speaking is. Linguists have analyzed it and there's no linguistic structure. Yeah, I think maybe a healthy way to approach this is like anyone that you know, even would claim angelic language like Okay, look what Paul's correction even was he says hey don't do it unless there's an interpreter. That's the key like it's about edification It's about edification. So you can think about that and just look at hey no more ⁓ than three and Sorry, that's prophecy because if someone interprets

  96. Allen Smith: So you can think about that and just look at, hey, no more than three and, or sorry, that was prophecy. ⁓ because if someone interprets then, but like, unfortunately that doesn't really happen. lot of times it doesn't happen. It doesn't happen. Right. So, so I think that's the key. So you just have to keep it open-handed. I do think churches have to decide whether or not they will allow public tongue speaking in their worship. And that's typically what's going to make a church.

  97. Jeramie: But like unfortunately, yeah, that doesn't really have a lot of times it doesn't right? So so I think that's the key. So you just have to keep it open-handed I do think churches have to decide. Yeah, that's whether or not they will allow Public tongue speaking in their worship. Yeah, and that's typically what's gonna make a church one denomination or another or charismatic non charismatic Yeah, I think we can still

  98. Allen Smith: one denomination or another or charismatic, non-charismatic. But I think we can still… I don't think this is something that Christians should divide their relationships over as brothers and sisters. I mean, it's just… I think it's an issue of conscience in some ways and whether or not… an issue of met conscience, conviction. totally. Prophecy. Prophecy. Here's the key question there. Is prophecy in the New Testament the same as prophecy in the Old Testament? Yeah.

  99. Jeramie: I don't think this is something that Christians should divide their relationships over as brothers and sisters. I mean, it's just… I think it's an issue of conscience in some ways and whether or not… know, an issue of met conscience, conviction. Yeah, totally. Prophecy. Prophecy. Here's the key question there. Is prophecy in the New Testament the same as prophecy in the Old Testament? Yeah. That's question. That's the interpret question. And so, if you say it is…

  100. Allen Smith: That's the question. That's interpretive question. And so if you say it is, then you're going to say, well, prophecy in the New Testament is thus saith the Lord. And so you're going to say, if there's prophecy today, it's not like I was praying and as I thought about you, I had a vision in my head of a horse running along the beach in its strength. Does that mean anything to you? Like sometimes that's how people do prophecy today. But if you think prophecy is the same in the Old Testament, you're going to be like, that's not what prophecy is. That's just an impression or an idea.

  101. Jeramie: then you're going to say, well, prophecy in the New Testament is, thus saith the Lord. The other view is that prophecy in the New Testament is something

  102. Allen Smith: The other view is that prophecy in the New Testament is something different than prophecy in Old Testament that's more the Holy Spirit bringing something to mind that I could say, but I could be misinterpreting it. And so it's a lot more gray and fuzzy and hence needs to be interpreted. Yeah, it needs to be tested against the Word of God, right? And tested if it's applicable even in comes to pass. That's how you know a prophecy is actually... I mean, that's the bottom line. Yeah, that's the bottom line. If there's a prediction, it doesn't come to pass. Yeah, yeah.

  103. Jeramie: different than prophecy in the Old Testament that's more the Holy Spirit bringing something to mind that I could say, but I could be misinterpreting it. And so it's a lot more gray and fuzzy, and hence needs to be interpreted. Yeah, it needs to be tested against the Word of God, right? And tested if it's applicable even in comes to pass. That's how you know a prophecy is actually... I mean, that's the bottom line. Yeah, that's the bottom line. If there's a prediction, it doesn't come to pass. Yeah, yeah. You know what's interesting to me though is there are people who make prophecies. They don't come to pass. But then people keep listening to that prophet. Like, know, in the last, mean with... Yeah, that's true. I mean, there was a lot of prophecies about President Trump that were out there. ⁓ And like a lot of them were really off. And then, but people kept listening to those prophets. And I'm like, they're nonprofits, Ted. Like, they got it wrong. Yeah, that's literally the whole thing. That's literally the test of a prophet. I mean, hopefully we can agree on that. Yeah.

  104. Allen Smith: You know what's interesting to me though is there are people who make prophecies. They don't come to pass. But then people keep listening to that prophet. Like, know, in the last, mean with... Yeah, that's true. I mean, there was a lot of prophecies about President Trump that were out there. ⁓ And like a lot of them were really off. And then, but people kept listening to those prophets. And I'm like, they're nonprofits, Ed. Like, they got it wrong. Yeah, that's literally the whole thing. That's literally the test of a prophet. I mean, hopefully we can agree on that. Yeah.

  105. Jeramie: Yeah, and I think it's interesting is, you know, again, disagreements on prophecy, you know, something that God spontaneously brings to mind. And I just what I've experienced and is. When people aim to make that, hey, I've got this insight, just like, hey, they encourage from the scriptures and for the edification and building up, it's just like, that's what I just see when I've been around, you know, some of more charismatic friends and stuff, it's just like this is an encouragement from scripture that is true. It's just like that.

  106. Allen Smith: Yeah, and I think it's interesting is, you know, again, disagreements on prophecy, you know, something that God spontaneously brings to mind.

  107. Jeramie: If that's what you mean by prophecy, then yeah, if you mean to encourage from the scriptures some truth that we know to encourage you, like I feel like, okay, then I prophesied all time. Yeah, everyone prophesies that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hopefully we're just encouraging from the scriptures. So anyway, so I think as you wrestle with that as brothers and sisters and you talk about those issues, those are questions as you're talking to someone, because sometimes you start braising things and people start sharing their thoughts and you get confused and lost.

  108. Allen Smith: If that's what you mean by prophecy, then yeah, if you mean to encourage from the scriptures some truth that we know to encourage you, like I feel like, okay, then I prophesied all the time. And so think that's something I do is I think to people, as I talk to people, I'm like, is this person thinking of tongues as just a human language or are they thinking of it as a prayer language? And then are they thinking of prophecy the same way as the Old Testament or as a different thing? And once I can sense that, then I know like, oh, I know where they're coming from. And it helps the conversation clarify. Yeah, that's great. The end of the First Corinthians is huge, yeah, chapter 15. 15, it's so encouraging. You have one of the clearest...

  109. 111. Jeramie: And ⁓ so, you know, when you share the gospel with someone, that's what you have to share. Is that Christ died for our sins on the cross, He was buried and rose from the third day. It's interesting, sometimes you ask Christians, like, what's the gospel? And people don't know what to say. And they're like, well, it's that God loves us. Well, that's true, but that's not the gospel. It's what Christ did in His death, burial, and resurrection. And you got to know that because otherwise you can't do evangelism. If you don't know the gospel, you can't evangelize.

  113. Jeramie: Because you just tell people like, I just gotta have faith or God loves you. No one's gonna get saved by just have faith or God loves you. that's right. ⁓ And Paul, what he's doing, he's making this argument because there's some kind of misunderstanding on this doctrine of resurrection and thinking he goes, hey, this is why he says, I'm delivering you as of what's of first importance. Because on the contrary, if this isn't true, then later on he says, you've believed in faith and your faith is in vain. So he's gonna make the argument that it's not about the

  115. Jeramie: Profession of your faith, but or not necessarily profession, but the strength of your faith But the object of your faith because this is true the whole gospel message Hinges on because Christ actually did rise from the dead Then you actually have faith that you too will be raised with him at the last day And so there's kind of this this I think misunderstanding a lot of times with Christians is you and I were just talking about in a lot of Christians I've talking to and they asked what actually happens when I die

  116. Allen Smith: Profession of your faith, but or not necessarily profession, but the strength of your faith But the object of your faith because this is true the whole gospel message Hinges on because Christ actually did rise from the dead Then you actually have faith that you too will be raised with him at the last day And so there's kind of this this I think misunderstanding a lot of times with Christians is you and I were just talking about in a lot of Christians I've talking to and they asked what actually happens when I die

  117. Jeramie: And how does the resurrection fit in? Because, you know, the comfort we're given is that when we die, we'll go to heaven and be with Jesus. And then you read about resurrection and you're like, where does that fit in? which is kind of confusing. And kind of, if I could just kind of give a timeline of the Christian's future. It's someday we die. Let's say Jesus doesn't come back yet. So, someone dies, right? What happens to them?

  118. Allen Smith: And how does the resurrection fit in? Because, you know, the comfort we're given is that when we die, we'll go to heaven and be with Jesus. And then you read about resurrection and you're like, where does that fit in? which is kind of confusing. And kind of, if I could just kind of give a timeline of the Christian's future. It's someday we die. Let's say Jesus doesn't come back yet. So, someone dies, right? What happens to them? Their soul...

  119. Jeramie: their soul, ⁓ whatever that is, that immaterial part of us is in the presence of the Lord. You know, ⁓ Jesus said to the thief on the cross, today you'll be with me in paradise. ⁓ Are they judged then at the moment? Well, wait a minute. So, let me just give the timeline first. So, we're with Jesus. Paul says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. So, the Bible teaches that when we die, we're in some way

  120. Allen Smith: whatever that is, that immaterial part of us is in the presence of the Lord. know, Jesus said to the thief on the cross, today you'll be with me in paradise. ⁓ Are they judged then at the moment? Well, wait a minute. So let me just give the timeline first. So we're with Jesus. Paul says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. So the Bible teaches that when we die, we're in some way present with Christ.

  121. Jeramie: present with Christ and alive with Him in heaven ⁓ as a soul. ⁓ But then, that's not the end of the story because God didn't make us floating souls, He made us souls in a body. Yeah, embodied souls. Embodied souls. at the second coming of Christ is the resurrection when our soul and a new resurrected body will be joined together and we'll live in a new physical heavens and earth forever.

  122. Allen Smith: and alive with Him in heaven ⁓ as a soul. ⁓ But then, that's not the end of the story because God didn't make us floating souls, He made us souls in a body. Yeah, embodied souls. Embodied souls. at the second coming of Christ is the resurrection when our soul and a new resurrected body will be joined together and we'll live in a new physical heavens and earth forever. because if Jesus didn't do that, then death wins. Yeah, that's right.

  123. Jeramie: So, because if Jesus didn't do that, then death wins. Yeah, that's right. Death wins. So, it's like if Jesus defeated sin, he defeated the consequence of sin is death. And so, on the cross, he defeats our sin. At the resurrection, he defeats death. And so, the death and resurrection go together, and our salvation and our resurrection go together. But the Corinthians were doubting that. They were like, yeah, they were struggling with the idea of resurrection. They were like, ⁓ you know. ⁓

  124. Allen Smith: Death wins. So it's like if Jesus defeated sin, he defeated the consequence of sin is death. And so on the cross, he defeats our sin. At the resurrection, he defeats death. And so the death and resurrection go together, and our salvation and our resurrection go together. But the Corinthians were doubting that. They were like, yeah, they were struggling with the idea of resurrection. They were like, ah, you know, who believes that? I mean, they're Greeks. The Greeks didn't believe in resurrection. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. So the background, this is a cultural background they're coming from.

  125. Jeramie: who believes that? I mean, they're Greeks. The Greeks didn't believe in resurrection. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. So background, this is a cultural background they're coming from. And then they wondered like, what's our resurrection body going to be like? So he gives these analogies of it's like a seed, it's own one way and it rises another way, more glorious. So yeah, yeah, that's great because it's a whole echo of the entire story of the Bible, which was everyone was in Adam. He's the federal head or the covenant head. Well, he died. And then now

  126. Allen Smith: And then they wondered like what's our resurrection body gonna be like so he gives these analogies of it's like a seed its own one way and it rises another way more glorious so yeah, yeah, that's great because it's a whole echo of the entire Story of the Bible which was everyone was in an atom. He's the federal head or the Covenant head well He died and then now everyone's second resurrection body or second body is gonna be with Christ who was he was raised first

  127. Jeramie: Everyone's second resurrection body or second body is going to be with Christ who was he was raised first then everyone else because the second man was from heaven So you're put on the imperishable body just as Christ body is in perishable right now, and he's raised physically yeah Christians to will be raised physically so brothers and sisters if you have faith in Christ when you die You will be with the Lord and someday Christ will return and then we will be together again in new bodies

  128. Allen Smith: than everyone else because the second man was from heaven. So you're going to put on the imperishable body, just as Christ's body is imperishable right now and He's raised physically, Christians too will be raised physically. So brothers and sisters, if you have faith in Christ when you die, you will be with the Lord and someday Christ will return and then we will be together again in new bodies, resurrected bodies in a new creation. And so this is our ultimate hope.

  129. Jeramie: resurrected bodies in a new creation in and so this is our ultimate hope yeah, and When and you're like wow how can we hope that it's because Jesus was raised amen and if he was raised we will be raised Yeah, that's right, and then my one of my favorite verses right here to close ⁓ What when the perishable puts on the imperishable meaning new resurrection bodies and the mortal puts on immortality then shall come to pass the saying that is written

  130. Allen Smith: And you're like, wow, how can we hope that it's because Jesus was raised. And if He was raised, we will be raised. Yeah, that's right. And then one of my favorite verses right here, to close. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, meaning new resurrection bodies, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, death is swallowed up in victory. ⁓ death, where's your victory? ⁓ death, where is your sting?

  131. Jeramie: Death is swallowed up in victory. Oh death, where is your victory? Oh death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. And here's his final exhortation. Because of that, therefore brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. So brothers and sisters, your labor is not in vain here on this earth. Although you are in your imperishable body right now, you will be raised with a perishable body.

  132. Allen Smith: Death is sin and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. And here's his final exhortation. Because of that, therefore, brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. So brothers and sisters, your labor is not in vain here on this earth. Although you are in your imperishable body right now, you will be raised with a perishable body in the kingdom of Jesus Christ when he delivers it over to his father at the final judgment. And you will be able to

  133. Jeramie: in the kingdom of Jesus Christ when he delivers it over to his father at the final judgment and you will be able to scream in triumphant victory with your savior Jesus Christ. Those dark times when you're like, all this labor for Jesus worth it? Just remember what's coming on that day you'll be like, that was the dumbest question I ever asked. It's all worth it. It's all worth it. It's worth it brothers and sisters. We love you guys. Hey, don't forget to shoot us that email.
