Allen: Our church is really blessed to to be able to have those brothers. Yeah. Who love them, love the word. Last episode I talked a little bit about how encouraged I was. just even when I was coming up here to record the podcast and Chris is sitting there reading his Bible. It's like, yeah, he's reading this Bible to this podcast right now. But like Chris actually just really loves the Bible, really loves God's people. And like he's reading it so that he can be an encouragement to the people. And that just is encouraging and we talked a little bit

Allen: about how sometimes maybe you're struggling in your Bible reading or maybe you're you're behind right now. And it's just like get around brothers and sisters who love the word, come to church, get to men's women's Bible study, ask someone to reach out and just let their kind of joy and perm and love for the Bible permeate onto you. And it's just, you know, you kinda pick it up from being around others. So some same to you, obviously. Yeah, I and you know, with those two guys, y y y you know, it's interesting. I I became a senior pastor when I was twenty six.

Allen: Which you know, was I think a little rash on the part of the church. But the Lord the Lord is kind to the church and kind to me. But you know, when I think of where I was in terms of my theological development, my pastoral development and wisdom and where those guys are at at the same roughly the same age. I think they turned thirty, but they've been here in their late twenties. Yeah. And like they're they're head and shoulders above where I was at that time. So

Allen: I just think they're really gifted. They're they have huge pastors' hearts. They think really well about the church and about ministry from scripture. So it's a privilege to have them here. I learned things from them. That's cool. So I think our church is just really blessed to have and of course Bobby and of course you guys just it's it's really fun when you work with people who are really exceptional.

Allen: And I think that's part of the joy for me in this season at Santa Bell's as I just feel like I'm surrounded by really exceptional people. That's really cool. Yeah. Praise God for that. That's fun. Yeah. Speaking of, you became a senior pastor at twenty six. Indeed. Here's what I want to ask you. Yeah. At ten years old, were you thinking I want to be a senior pastor at twenty six? No. Okay. I I did not have any of those categories. Okay. Yeah. What was the vision for life for young

Allen: ten year old Jedi. mean, if I could have been anything, I probably would have been a Jedi. Of course. That would have been what I had been. Sure. Yes. Yes. And have my own droid. And have your own droid. Yeah. That's good. Yeah. Is that still in the plans? Is I mean retirement plans? if it was an option, you know, I I could go to a Warsey convention or whatever. But but you know, Disney bought Star Wars and destroyed it. Yeah. It's not great. Worse than they

-
Allen: Then Luke destroyed the Death Star. Disney has destroyed Star Wars and Marvel and That's everything they touch. Dang. We're three hours away. You better be careful. Can I put opinions on that? I feel like I just like broke the the rules of Flor being pastor in Florida. I was gonna say you better be careful, dude. Okay. There's a the Disney adults gonna be showing up at our door. Yeah, that's right. Whatever gets them to church, right? Anyway, let's get back to our navigator's Bible reading plan. We're commenting.

Allen: on month six, days twenty to twenty-five, the last days here in we're gonna comment on second Kings fourteen through twenty-five, which is the end of the book. We're gonna finish up Psalm one nineteen and then introduce the Psalm of Ascens in one twenty through one thirty-five, but we're only gonna comment on really three. And then Luke is six through seven ten in Philippians three through the end, which is chapter four there.

Allen: Let's hop back into 2nd Kings, kind of just to remind ourselves what's going on. Big picture here with Second Kings is we have these series of kings in the north and in the south, Israel and Judah. We've seen a lot of idolatry. we've seen a lot of just unfaithfulness, covenant disobedience, and the result of that, and that primarily being the idolatrous worship when there's this repeated phrase of

Allen: they did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and they did not to destroy the high places, which is they were offering sacrifices to idol worship, which was explicitly condemned in Deuteronomy seventeen for the kings, which we've talked a lot about in the previous previous episodes, where these kings are not doing according to Deuteronomy seventeen and they're worshiping other gods. Yeah. And you know, when I read when you read Second King first and second Kings, especially as you get into Second Kings, it's kind of like you're watching

-
Allen: A like a huge ship run aground and be destroyed, but you're watching it happen to slow motion. Yeah, that's you're just watching the slow motion disaster where you're like, no, no, like you know, and they just keep getting it wrong. And and God is kind, he'll send them a a good king here and there. But it's you know, it just kind of goes down, down. Little moments of

-
Allen: You know, divine intervention where God is kind, you know, a little moment with Hezekiah. Yeah. And then a little bit king. Great king. And then Manasseh, who is like the almost diabolical. He like he's like a demonic king. Yeah. right after right after this great king Hezekiah. Yeah. It's just like, here, just kidding. Then God gives him a little blip with Josiah, who is is kind of a it's sort of like the last you know, golden moment for Judah.
-

Then God gives him a little blip with Josiah, who is is kind of a it's sort of like the last you know, golden moment for Judah.
-
Allen: But even then Judah collapses. I I I think if you're reading Second Kings, an important chapter to just kind of, you know, chew on is chapter seventeen, verse seven and following, which basically tells why God did this. You know, why did they get destroyed? Why were they taken out? And so it's just a list of their sins. So that that's probably I I think kind of like the theological key yeah to that section. Yeah. Yeah, lists of their sins.

-
Allen: Again, we kind of talked about it a little bit, primarily idolatry. Mm-hmm. let's talk a little bit about idolatry because just in in our in our lives, we're probably most of the time, we've talked about this a little bit, not tempted to worship some statues. Yeah, that's right. But what does idolatry look like in our lives? How can we you know, avoid it, be on the lookout for it? Like when have things become idolatrous in our own lives as Christians here? Yeah, you know,

-
Allen: You know, part you could say, well, is it even idolatry? Are we just kind of being sp spiritualizing idolatry? But in the New Testament, Paul, like in Ephesians that we just studied in chapter in chapter five, he says, you know, greed, which is idolatry. Yeah, yeah. So so clearly being greedy is a kind of idolatry, even though you're not, you know, bowing down to a statue and giving an incense or something. Yeah. So so I think it's anything that that captures your heart.
-

-
Allen: And and displaces God. So God should be the ultimate object of our love, worship, obedience, value, purpose. And when other things displace that, yeah. Which is what happens in greed. You know, money becomes ultimate. Yeah, that's right. And in fact, isn't it interesting that Jesus in his teaching says, you know, you cannot serve God and money. Yeah, that's right. And so he puts money as a kind of substitute God. So all that to say, I think idolatry is is when anything earthly

-
Allen: takes the place of God functionally in our lives. And and man, it can be anything, can't it? Yeah. Yeah, it really can be anything. It can be good thing. Every good thing can be turned into idolatry, which is money. Is that right? Yeah, money. Yeah. Yeah. Relationships relationships. Ministry. Ministry. Yeah. Yeah. People turn ministry into an idol and you know, serving God replaces God. Mm-hmm. And that happens. Yeah. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, that's good. Even our good works. Good works. Yes. programs in a church. Yeah.

-
Allen: activities in a church, you know, people just y you know, get super territorial and obsessed with something. And then when it's you know, I've I've heard it said, here's one way to to identify your idols is is what is if something gets taken away or messed with and you get angry, it's possible that's an idol. Because it's like, you know, we we always get mad when something messes with our God. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. And we'll talk about that a little bit with Paul in Philippians, you know, when he talks about everything I have counted as loss. But

Allen: To to jump back a little bit into your second kings, we see their dollar tree. we're kind of seeing again, you said the kind of you're watching in slow motion, just this ship being destroyed. Kind of where are we headed now? you know, essentially we're they're now about to enter exile. God's gonna raise up the Assyrians as a judgment to them. so let's kind of talk about like a little bit like the end of this fall, what happens to Israel, what happens to Judah, and where does this lead them and the rest of

Allen: Our Old Testament narrative and story. That's right. So what the at the end of Kings, you you basically have God making good on his covenant curses. That if they broke his covenant, which they did repeatedly for centuries, he would cast them out of the land. They'd be sp you know, they'd be vomited out of the land. And so that's what finally happens. They're taken into exile, those that are not you know, killed in war. Yeah.

-
Allen: First the Assyrians conquer the northern ten tribes and then the Babylonians in chapter twenty five conquer Judah and and Benjamin, the s the south, and then the people are taken away. And and the way the Assyrians and Babylonians did it was when they conquered a people, they would remove the people who were there and they'd ship in other people. Yep. So that way nobody was like in their native soil and nobody was feeling patriotic. Yeah, yeah, exactly right. So yeah, he raises them up, they're judged, and that's a part of it.

Allen: However, at the end of 25, we have a little bit of a glimmer of hope. A little glimmer of hope. Yeah. Just a tiny bit. Jehoiakim, who's this king who's of the line of David. Yep. Who would it it showed that God would not completely abandon the line of David and that he would actually bring about a king who would fulfill and who would be of that line, which of course we now come to know that this is Jesus of the line of David. So we see God ends with hope. It ends with hope. Yep. There's a curse.

-
Allen: There's always hope that hope is in Christ, is the one who would fulfill. And that's really what first and second Kings is kind of all about. It's no human king would be able to satisfy covenant faithfulness and be able to deliver people. And so there needed to be a brother king, which is Christ. Yeah. Psalms of Ascent. Yeah. Talk to us a little bit. What's the Psalm of Ascent? Psalms of Ascent is a collection of Psalms within the Psalms. it's a collection within the collection. And it's it's Psalms

Pentecost, well, Passover, Pentecost, and then the Feast of Trumpets or Tabernacles in the fall. So these are psalms that are kind of psalms for the road. Yeah. Psalms for traveling up. Yeah. You always go up to Jerusalem. So everyone's going up, and these are the psalms they sing as they ascend to Jerusalem. Yeah. one commentator called it it's like a

Allen: collection of a favorite playlist for a road trip. That's awesome. Yeah, isn't that good? I really like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah. Yeah. There's this collection of the favorite playlist for the road trip because these are times of joy and celebration because they're going up. Yeah. It's joyous. Yeah. And it you know, it starts heavy, Psalm 120, but then it just gets happy and and the the enthusiasm of people you know, heading up. You know, I think like for instance, you know, we we just read up to one twenty two for this week, but

Allen: you know, when they're going up to Jerusalem, he says, I rejoiced with me, with those who said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. And so he just describes the joy of coming into Jerusalem. And and of course, you know, for us as Christians today, it tells us in Hebrews that we belong to the Jerusalem that's above. And yeah, that's true. You know, Jerusalem, the reason Jerusalem is special is it's a symbol of God's people gathered together under God's king and in God's presence. Yeah.

That's where we gather with God's people under God's King and the presence of God in a unique way. Yep. And so I think, you know, one one thing you can do with Psalm one twenty two is let it instruct you in the kind of heart posture we should have as we go to church. Yeah. So as I'm going to church, you know, I don't know about you, I don't always feel like going to church. No, that's fair.

Like mostly I'm excited to go and I love to preach and I love the church family. But you know, some days you're just like, yeah, I don't want to do this, you know. so I think that this is a psalm that can help my heart and help our hearts is to be like, you know where where am I going? I'm going to gather with a a particular group of the the the saints that Jesus bought his own blood where where we're all gathering under the kingship of Jesus. I mean, this all the time we're in this world with all of its chaos and evil rulers and evil laws and crazy culture. And then this is like the one time I'm like assembling with people who all submit to King Jesus and claim allegiance to him. And God is uniquely present with his people in the gathered worship that he's not in in a in a way you don't experience him was just kind of you privately praying. Yeah. And that's the biggest thing. It's a little bit unique. It's unique. Yeah. You're you're joining in a sense that you know there's there's the heavenly worship that's going on. And we join in with him.

Allen: When we gather as God's people on the Lord's Day on Sunday. So yeah, it's just a little heart correct of like, man, this is a joy to come into in into worship. One little tidbit, just most people have probably heard this expression at some point. I I lift up my highs to the hills from where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. So just lifting our eyes. Where does our help come from? My help comes from the Lord. Something that I pray often, like, where does my health come from? Just to remind myself.

Allen: Help comes from the Lord, the maker of all things, who literally has sovereignty over all things. That's where my help is. And just a reminder of God's character. He is ruler. He is king. Yep. Great psalm. Love that Psalm 121. Yeah. So as you read through these Psalms, just kind of slow down, savor. S A C Savor. That's right. Savor God. That's our first current. Yep. Allen: Teach our hearts how to long for God and his people and his kingdom and his church. Yeah, that's great. That's great. Speaking of, let's go to the New Testament. We're gonna look at Luke. Luke six one through seven ten. And actually speaking of, we just talked so much about the kind of the corporate body and what Christ is doing. He's kind of gathering his his new his new people around himself. Yep. as he's been doing in Luke, he's gonna he's gonna call his twelve apostles or his twelve disciples.

And he famously gives his sermon on the plane, and then performs many of his healings and miracles. but let's talk a little bit about that first. There's a little bit of a controversy over the Sabbath, with Christ and the Pharisees here. what is Luke trying to tell us and what is Jesus getting at with this kind of Sabbath controversy?

Allen: Well, I I think that the big the big thing that's happening here, you kind of, I think, put your finger on it with the gathering of the twelve apostles. There's there's a kind of reconstituting of the people of God. Yeah, that's great. And so you know, the just as Israel in the old testament had the twelve tribes, so now God's people are being are being constituted around this new king, the true king Jesus. And so he picks twelve apostles, which is not a accident that there's twelve. Right.

Allen: And and even his his sort of asserting about the Sabbath is he's he's sort of putting himself forward as the one who rightly interprets the law of God and has authority over the Sabbath. You know, he doesn't just say, I'm giving you the right interpretation. He says in Luke six five, the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. I mean, who's Lord of the Sabbath? It's God. Yeah. And so and then you have the Beatitudes and you have the teaching, and so it's it's like a second law giving.

Allen: Yeah. So just as, you know, Moses gathered the twelve tribes and then they went to Mount Sinai and then the Lord gave them the law. So here's Jesus now teaching the people, teaching his disciples about his kingdom. So so there's a lot of re a revisiting of old testament themes as as got Jesus is setting up the new people of God. Yeah. Yeah, that's great. Yeah, setting up the new people of God. Let's talk a little bit about what it means to be radical when it comes to following Christ. There's

Allen: A sense in which there's some radical nature here of like loving your enemies. What do you mean by that, Jesus? I hate my enemies. I'm like, I'm supposed to hate my enemies. Why would I love my enemies? He talks about judging. He's talking about knowing a tree by its fruit. and then he's talking about building your house on the rock. It's like, you gotta build your house on me because everything else is gonna fail. So there's clearly a sense of Jesus is very radical. What is what just think about us right now? Like when you first start following Christ, you've been following Christ for a long time. How can we say stay radical?

Allen: Like, what does it mean to radically follow Christ in a world that is increasingly hostile to Christianity, increasingly hostile to the Bible, and and the things of God? How can we stay radical in our obedience and faithfulness to Christ? I think, you know, one one thing it helps is just what we're doing, which is reading through the gospels. One of the things I like about this reading plan is that every day there's always a reading from the gospels. So over the whole course of the year, you're always in the gospels. Allen: Hearing, you know, hearing Jesus' teaching as recorded by the apostles, not that it's more inspired or more important or more powerful than the Old Testament or the New Testament. It's all God's word. It's all Jesus' word. Yeah. I mean, what Peter wrote is Jesus' word. What Leviticus is Jesus' word. That's right.

And so he's the one who through the through his spirit, it's the spirit of Christ that inspired all the scriptures. That's right. So I mean, in that sense, the whole Bible should be a red letter. But there's something about, you know, that kind of that radical edge really comes out in some of his teachings because he's he's contrasting his kingdom with what had been sort of evolved.

Allen: evolved or you might say devolved over the centuries with the Pharisees. Yeah. And so it it just it it just snaps differently because of the context. So when Jesus says, I say to you who listen, yeah, love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you. which is, you know, you can find that teaching other places, but it's something about the way he says it, it just really is it seems radical. Yeah. Like that's not what I instinctively do with my enemies. No, no, it's not.

I I think what's interesting is even I just think about the church and how, you know, it's i it's kinda funny. I remember what I was reading or listening to the other day, or maybe it was actually in a sermon I mean when I was up in Ohio visiting. And we as Christians are very opinionated. Rightfully so, because we have strong convictions.

Allen: About what we believe, about what cr Jesus is radical. He has strong opinions and convictions. Like I'm the Lord, there is no other way. and sometimes we're very prone and quick to do that improperly, to communicate our convictions in a way that is not loving of our enemies. kind. Kind gentle. Gentle. Yeah, you know, it's like speaking the truth in love. so I've just been been learning how to do that more, even in my own development, g you know, gaining more theological convictions.

I don't back down from what the Lord Jesus Christ says, but we communicate in a way that is kind and is loving because that's what Christians ought to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Gentleness and kindness and meekness are are sh are characteristics. y you know, the I think about that passage in Second Timothy where Paul says to Timothy, you know, the the Lord's servant must not quarrel.

Allen: Yeah. He must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him, he must gently instruct. Yeah. So even if you're being opposed as a Christian, you should gent and you have to instruct like you gently instruct. Yeah. So, and I think that's that that command to love. It doesn't mean you don't oppose, or you don't correct or you don't make a judgment. Yeah. It just means you're you you do it graciously, humbly, lovingly, pulling pulling the plank out of your eye first and all that stuff. Yeah. That's great. Yeah. Speaking of, you know.

Allen: He mentioned judgment in there, right? And so here's how you like just kind of a base level rule. It's like, how can you judge someone who says they follow Christ? Does their life reflect Christlikeness? And that's how we ought to judge. Yep. Yep. Philippians, I think we finished Philippians. We did. We finished Philippians. Yeah. Yep. These last couple chapters are just so compelling. I think three, one to twelve could be in like my top.

Allen: like top five or top ten okay sort of most impactful to me passages of scripture over the years. It it's just it's one that always lands for me. because of the the the extremity the x of Paul's contrast yeah between you know how he used to view himself and all the things he boasted in as a Hebrew in verses, you know, three through six, but then how all of that has so r talk about radical. Allen: That he's like, all that stuff I used to boast in is now lost. In fact, it's like garbage compared to knowing Christ, gaining Christ, having Christ as my righteousness. and you know, the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. And it just I just have always found that as a a kind of like recalibrating passage for my soul. Yeah. Because it it it brings me back to like, you know, what is of supreme importance is to know Christ.

And I feel like this passage is like a you know, it's like a cleanse. And I read it and I'm like, that's right. Everything's garbage compared to knowing Christ. Yep. Everything's and so then I ha and then I say, Am I pursuing him? And am I am I looking toward him? And and is my heart searching for him? Even when I do my Bible reading. Yeah. I I think something that personally I just love so much about this progression from like three to four is like what you just mentioned, n everything else is garbage compared to Christ. Well, why?
