  1. Hey everybody, welcome to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. Today Rick's

  2. going to take us back to the very beginning of

  3. the church, and in this message titled, Real Christianity, The

  4. Model of the First Church, Rick is going to guide

  5. us through what authentic faith really looks like, as we

  6. explore how the first believers lived, worshipped, and supported one another,

  7. and how their example still shapes our lives today. So,

  8. let's get started with today's message.

  9. In 33 AD, when Jesus died on the cross, rose again,

  10. and then went back to heaven, there were only a

  11. handful of disciples, handful of believers, about 120 believers when

  12. Jesus went.

  13. Back to heaven.

  14. But within 300 years, those 120 believers had dominated the

  15. Roman Empire. Even Caesar became a Christian. It became the

  16. official religion of the entire known world.

  17. How did that happen?

  18. How did the church grow from just a few people

  19. to the dominant faith in the Roman Empire and now 2.3

  20. billion people, one out of every three people around the

  21. world is a follower of Jesus Christ? Why did the

  22. church grow so fast? That's fascinated me. Now one of

  23. the interesting things is in that first 300 years, it

  24. was illegal to be a Christian. They were under intense persecution.

  25. In fact, being a Christian was not a way to

  26. get ahead, it was a way to lose your head.

  27. More often than not, if you were discovered to be

  28. a Christian, you're gonna be fed to the lions in

  29. the Colosseum. You're gonna be tarred and feathered and burned

  30. on the cross as Nero did for literally hundreds of

  31. thousands of people. They were persecuted ruthlessly for 300 years.

  32. It was not a socially acceptable thing to become a

  33. Christian and yet within 300 years, they dominated the world.

  34. Now the book of Acts in the Bible is the

  35. story of the first church. It started on the day

  36. of Pentecost. That's in Acts chapter 2. Today is the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  37. day of Pentecost. This is the birthday of the church 2,000

  38. or so years ago. And as you look through the

  39. book of Acts, you discover... eight characteristics of real Christianity.

  40. You know, you guys, there are a lot of people

  41. today who are claiming to be Christians. A lot of

  42. things done in the name of Jesus Christ that God

  43. would say, what? You gotta be kidding. I have nothing

  44. to do with that. In fact, Jesus said in the

  45. Sermon on the Mount that in the last day at

  46. the judgment, there will be people who come to him

  47. and say.

  48. Hey, Lord, didn't we do many miracles in your name?

  49. And he's gonna go, I didn't even know you. Who

  50. are you talking about? You're not part of my family.

  51. There are a lot of things done in the name

  52. of Christianity in the church that Jesus Christ would disavow.

  53. There's fake Christianity. There's phony Christianity. There's pseudo Christianity. What

  54. I want us to do this weekend is I want

  55. us to look at the real deal. What does it

  56. mean to really be a follower of Jesus Christ? You know,

  57. when you were born, you had all the DNA you're

  58. ever gonna get. In fact, the moment that egg was

  59. fertilized in your mother, you had all the DNA. You

  60. don't have any more today than you did the moment

  61. you were conceived. And when the birth of the church

  62. happened on Pentecost a couple thousand years ago, all of

  63. the DNA in the body of Christ was already there.

  64. And as I've studied it, I've discovered how different we

  65. are as Christians in the 21st century from Christians in

  66. the first century. So I want us to go back

  67. and look at what does it really mean to be

  68. a real believer, real Christianity. And here are the eight things.

  69. You might write these down. They're all out of the

  70. book of Acts chapter two. Number one, real Christianity has

  71. supernatural power. Real Christianity has supernatural power. They don't just

  72. talk about God, they experience God. This is what makes

  73. the church different from every organization. We have the Holy Spirit.

  74. Microsoft does not have the Holy Spirit. The United States

  75. government does not have the Holy Spirit. The Red Cross

  76. does not have the Holy Spirit. No other organization has

  77. the power of God in it. God has not promised

  78. his spirit to help anybody or anything else except his church.

  79. Now the background of the birth of the church is

  80. in Acts chapter 1. And here on the screen it

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  81. says this. For 40 days after his crucifixion, Jesus met

  82. with his followers many times. In other words, after he

  83. rose from the dead, he hung around for another 40 days.

  84. And he proved in many ways that he was truly alive.

  85. One time he met with 500 people.

  86. He talked to them about the kingdom of God.

  87. One time while eating a meal with them, Jesus told them,

  88. do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the

  89. spirit he's promised. He said, I've got some stuff for

  90. you to do and I'm going back to heaven, but

  91. don't dare try to do it until you've got the power.

  92. And it's gonna come in my spirit.

  93. He says, I'm with you now, but I'm gonna go

  94. back to heaven and I'm gonna come back in a

  95. spirit form and I'm gonna be in you, not just

  96. with you. Now down in verse eight of the same chapter,

  97. it says this here on the screen. You will receive

  98. power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. And then

  99. you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria,

  100. and to the ends of the earth. Now we've talked

  101. about this before. Jerusalem was the city they were in.

  102. So he says, start in your own city. Then he says,

  103. you go to Judea. That's like Orange County. And then

  104. he says, go to Samaria. That's like LA County, the

  105. county next door with all kinds of different people. And

  106. then he says, go to the whole world. He says,

  107. you expand in increasing circles. And he says the Holy

  108. Spirit's gonna give you the power that you need to

  109. do what I want you to do. So for the

  110. next 10 days, Jesus goes back to heaven after 40 days,

  111. and for the next 10 days, all the people do

  112. is wait. And they meet and they wait and they pray,

  113. and they wait and they pray, and they wait and

  114. they pray for God's Spirit to give them the power

  115. they need for the life that he wants them to live.

  116. Now here's the connection.

  117. There is a direct connection in your life with power

  118. and prayer. The amount of spiritual power you have in

  119. your life is in direct proportion to the amount of

  120. time you spend in prayer.

  121. Much prayer, much power. Little prayer, little power. No prayer,

  122. no power.

  123. If you don't ever pray, I guarantee you, you're not

  124. seeing any miracles in your life. You're not seeing any

  125. supernatural power in your life. You don't have the energy

  126. to get everything done God wants you to get done.

  127. Prayer is the connection point. It is the point that

  128. you get the power. Yesterday morning, I went down to

  129. the kitchen to make a protein shake, and we got

  130. a brand new blender, and it had like 30.

  131. Buttons on it.

  132. And I'm going, I'm pushing these buttons and trying, and

  133. I just can't get the thing to go. And I'm going, man,

  134. all I need is a blender that has an off

  135. and on switch. I don't need 32 buttons on a blender.

  136. Just give me off and on. I'm pushing all these buttons,

  137. and no matter what it was.

  138. This thing does not work. And then I realized it

  139. wasn't plugged in.

  140. That is an analogy of life. You may be a Christian.

  141. You may be on your way to heaven. You may

  142. be pushing all kinds of buttons. But if you're not

  143. plugged into Holy Spirit power, you don't have any energy.

  144. And no matter how many Bible studies you go to

  145. and how many churches you attend and how many small

  146. groups you're a part of and how much you're involved

  147. in ministry, if you're not plugged in, you don't have

  148. any power in your life. Jesus said, wait for supernatural

  149. spiritual power. And where does it come? It comes by praying.

  150. They prayed for 10 days. Now what do you pray about?

  151. You can pray about anything. In fact, here's the alternative.

  152. You can worry or you can pray. If you prayed

  153. as much as you worry, you'd have a lot less

  154. to worry about.

  155. Don't worry, worship.

  156. Don't panic about that job, pray. Don't tremble, trust. Pray more,

  157. worry less. And you can pray about anything.

  158. I mean, anything.

  159. Let me ask you this question. Do you think you

  160. can pray for God to give you a parking spot? Yes.

  161. The answer is absolutely yes. You know, I was late

  162. coming to the first service this morning. I said, Lord,

  163. I need a green light every way. And I actually

  164. got a green light every way. I think God just said, well,

  165. you're going to be preaching on it. I may well

  166. give you a good illustration. It doesn't happen all the time.

  167. But I'm saying you can pray about any little detail

  168. of your life. If it's worth worrying about, it's worth

  169. praying about. You know, I was actually reading a book

  170. on prayer this week where a theologian says, if you

  171. hear a fire truck coming down the road and you pray, oh, Lord,

  172. please don't let it be my house on fire. He said,

  173. that's a self-centered prayer. And he said, because you're actually

  174. praying it'll be somebody else's house that burns down. And

  175. he said, what you pray is instead you should pray, Lord,

  176. let it be my house, but nobody get hurt. Now, friends,

  177. there's a word for that kind of theology. It's when

  178. you cross a crocodile and an abalone, it's a crocobaloney. Okay,

  179. that is not what God says. The Bible says we're

  180. to come to God as little children. Little children aren't diplomatic.

  181. They just say, I want this. And they're just very,

  182. they're very bold. I want this, daddy, I want it, daddy,

  183. I need it. And they're not embarrassed by the request.

  184. They just blurt out what's.

  185. Ever on their heart.

  186. When my kids were little, they thought I knew everything,

  187. could do everything. and could afford everything. When they grew up,

  188. they realized none of those were true. But your Heavenly

  189. Father can do everything, does know everything, and can afford everything,

  190. and you can talk to Him about anything. The more

  191. you pray in your life, the more spiritual power you're

  192. going to have.

  193. And where do you get that?

  194. You've got to have the blender plugged in. You've got

  195. to have the Holy Spirit living through you. Now, the

  196. arrival of God's Spirit, when Jesus goes back to Heaven

  197. and He says, I'm coming back, as the Holy Spirit

  198. to live inside you, the arrival of God's Spirit on

  199. the day of Pentecost is accompanied by three miraculous signs.

  200. And I want you to look at this. Verse one

  201. of chapter two, Acts.

  202. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together

  203. in one place.

  204. This is the 120 people.

  205. Suddenly, a noise like a strong blowing wind. It doesn't

  206. say it was a strong blowing wind. It says it

  207. was a noise that.

  208. Sounded like a hurricane. came from heaven and filled the

  209. whole house.

  210. So there's this big noise going on in their house.

  211. Nobody knows where it's coming from, where they were sitting.

  212. And it says then number two, they saw something like

  213. flames of fire.

  214. It doesn't say it was fire.

  215. It says they saw something like flames of fire that

  216. were separated and stood over each person. Now there's 120

  217. people in the room. So that means there's 120 of

  218. these little flames like things hanging over each individual head.

  219. That's gonna be weird. So what's going on here? Over

  220. each person there.

  221. And then it says, number three, they were all filled

  222. with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak with

  223. different languages by the power that the Holy Spirit was

  224. giving them. Now notice, here are the three signs on

  225. the first day of the church. Noise, it sounds like

  226. a hurricane inside the building. A bright flame that looks

  227. like fire over each individual person. And everybody speaks in

  228. a foreign language, like Germans, they speak in German or

  229. French or whatever.

  230. What is happening here?

  231. Jesus is saying this, my church that I'm starting today,

  232. I will build my church. My church will be powerful, radical,

  233. and multicultural. Powerful, radical, and multicultural. Powerful, you hear this

  234. enormous sound. Radical, like little flames over each other. I'm

  235. gonna set you guys on fire. You are gonna be

  236. on fire for me.

  237. It's gonna be radical. Radical.

  238. And then everybody's going to speak in a different language.

  239. It's going to be multicultural. What does he say? The

  240. church is like no other organization on earth and nothing

  241. you've ever seen before. The Bible says in Acts 2, 43,

  242. everyone was filled with awe.

  243. I guess so.

  244. And many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.

  245. You know the problem today? That power is missing in

  246. most churches. A lot of churches talk about God, but

  247. don't ever see any lives changed.

  248. Don't see any miracles.

  249. Don't see any financial miracles, health miracles, physical miracles, emotional miracles,

  250. relationships brought back together, people reconciling. They have talk, but

  251. they don't have power. That's why the Bible says in

  252. 1 Corinthians, here on the screen, 420, the kingdom of

  253. God is not a matter of talk, but of what?

  254. Power. Power.

  255. It is something that changes you. It gives you the

  256. power to be the person you want to be. It

  257. is the empowered life. So we're going to spend more

  258. emphasis on prayer because I want to see more power

  259. in you over your habits, your hurts, your hangups, power

  260. to let go of the past, power to move into

  261. the future, power to see changes in your relationships and

  262. in your dreams. That is what God says he wants

  263. to do. He wants to work in our life with power.

  264. Number two, the second mark of real Christianity. It has

  265. supernatural power. Number two, it uses everybody's language. It uses

  266. everybody's language. And we see that in the next verse.

  267. Acts 2 verse 4.

    Acts 2:4

  268. It says they all began to speak.

  269. Different languages.

  270. So the Spirit gave each of them the power to

  271. express themselves. Now you need to understand, this is not

  272. talking about speaking in tongues here.

  273. Speaking in tongues.

  274. Is a spiritual gift talked about in 1 Corinthians 12

  275. to 14 that is a private prayer language that says

  276. it's for your own edification, it's for you to talk

  277. to God when you're just going, God, I don't even

  278. know what to say. I can't even think of what

  279. to say. I don't even know what to say and

  280. I'm hurting so much inside.

  281. And I just, I'm just, whatever you say, God, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  282. That's a special gift that God gives to some people.

  283. That's not what he's talking about here.

  284. These are real languages.

  285. People actually heard speaking in French, speaking in Farsi, speaking

  286. in Swahili, speaking in German, speaking in Korean. Whatever it was,

  287. notice the next verse. This was not for growth. This

  288. was for their mission growth. Verse 5, there were religious

  289. Jews staying in Jerusalem at this time who had come, notice,

  290. from every country in the world.

  291. Isn't that convenient?

  292. God had brought them all back together at the day

  293. of Pentecost on the day he's going to start the church.

  294. And when they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered

  295. and they were all excited because all of them heard

  296. the believers talking in their own languages.

  297. They said, look, I'm from Jerusalem.

  298. You know, I'm from Ethiopia and you're speaking Ethiopian.

  299. Why is that? All of them heard the believers.

  300. Speaking in their own languages and in amazement and wonder,

  301. they exclaimed, these people are talking like this are just Galileans.

  302. In other words, they're Jews, they're Hebrews. They only know Hebrew.

  303. How in the world they know Ethiopian? How do they

  304. know that?

  305. And they said, how is it then that all of

  306. us hear them speaking in our own native languages? Down

  307. in verse 11, all of us hear them speaking in

  308. our own languages and about the great things God has done.

  309. What's going on here?

  310. This is the miracle of multichannel and multicultural communication. And

  311. God is saying, on the first day of the church,

  312. I'm gonna do a miracle that shows the good news

  313. is for everybody. It's not just for Jews. It's not

  314. just for red or yellow, black and white. All are

  315. precious in his sight. It's for amazing grace for every race.

  316. So I'm going to give these guys a special gift

  317. on the first day of the church, and we're going

  318. to expand by saying, everybody, here's the good news in

  319. their own language.

  320. Now what is God doing here?

  321. He's doing the exact opposite of what he did in

  322. Genesis 11. He reverses Genesis 11. If you go back

  323. to the Old Testament thousands of years earlier, there was

  324. a time when people said, we don't want God to

  325. be God anymore. We wanna be our own God. We're

  326. gonna run our own lives. We're gonna do our own things.

  327. We don't need God, so we're gonna build a giant

  328. tower to ourselves. And it's gonna go all the way

  329. up to the heaven.

  330. And we're gonna call it the Tower of Babel. You've

  331. heard of this.

  332. The word babbling comes from this word. Like a baby babble, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  333. That comes from mixing up the language. And the Tower

  334. of Babel is built. And God said, you know, as

  335. long as they can all speak the same language, well,

  336. that's not a good thing. Because nothing they do will

  337. be impossible for them. And so let's just go down

  338. and confuse their language. So God goes down and he

  339. changes Babel. We get, by the way, Babylon from this.

  340. They change their names. And he changes the languages. And

  341. all of a sudden, he confuses all the languages. And

  342. so some of the people speak certain languages. They head

  343. off for Europe. And another group, they can't understand each

  344. other anymore. And others moved away to Africa. And others

  345. moved away to Asia. And it all spread out. And

  346. the languages spread out. Now what God is doing thousands

  347. of years later is the exact opposite when he starts

  348. the church. He said, and now, instead of confusing languages,

  349. I'm gonna clarify it. Because I want everybody to know

  350. how much I love them. I'm reversing it. Now, we

  351. don't need this miracle today. Because today, the church speaks

  352. every language. We're in every country. The church is a

  353. global organization, a global family. In fact, it's more global

  354. than anything else. The church was global 200 years before

  355. anybody started thinking about globalization. It's in more nations than

  356. the United Nations. It speaks far more languages than the

  357. United Nations. I could take you to 10 million villages.

  358. The only thing in it around the world is a church.

  359. No school, no business, nothing else, no government, but they

  360. got a church. you take all the Walmarts and all

  361. the Starbucks and every other franchise together, they're a pitiful percentage,

  362. less than a percent of what the size of the

  363. church is. One out of every three people. We already

  364. speak every languages. Shoot, right here in Saddleback, at Saddleback Church,

  365. we speak 63 languages in this family.

  366. So we have Pentecost every week.

  367. Hey, thanks so much for being with us today and

  368. listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. I hope that you

  369. were just as blessed as I was from today's broadcast.

  370. Right now, here's Pastor Rick with a special message.

  371. You know, when I started Saddleback Church over 40 years

  372. ago with just a handful of people in our living room,

  373. I also began writing a simple devotional just for the

  374. people in our church to help them start each day

  375. with hope and with truth and with peace that comes

  376. from Jesus Christ. Well, you know, that little devotional grew

  377. and grew and grew, and today, Daily Hope is one

  378. of the largest email devotions in the whole world. And

  379. each day, people all around the globe are reconnecting with

  380. God's promises and finding fresh strength in his word to

  381. face whatever comes their way. Now, here's the best part.

  382. It's absolutely free, okay? We don't have any charge for this.

  383. Every day you'll get a quick devotional read and a

  384. podcast that you can listen to on the go. Now,

  385. You know, in a world that's more distracted and uncertain

  386. than ever, I want to help you start your day

  387. centered on what never changes. And what never changes is

  388. God's love, his unconditional love for you and his promises

  389. to you. You know, if you'll just spend just a

  390. few minutes a day in the morning with the Lord,

  391. it can bring so much more clarity, more purpose, more peace,

  392. to everything that happens in your day. Particularly, psychologists have

  393. said that what you do with the first five minutes

  394. of your day pretty much sets the tone. So friend,

  395. you were never meant to go through life alone. I

  396. want to personally invite you to just sign up for

  397. the Daily Hope devotional.

  398. Do it today.

  399. I think it's going to bring fresh encouragement to your

  400. walk in God.
