Wonder Week: Palm Sunday - Pastor Clayton Tyner

And my hope is that today's podcast finds you at the perfect time in your life that God uses it to inspire and enlighten you.

All right, MetaCurch, how you guys doing?

Yeah.

Man, welcome to the first week of a new series that we're calling Wonder Week.

Now, some of you grew up in church and you are very confused and you're checking your calendar right now because you were not ready for Palm Sunday.

Uh let me just like ease your worries.

Next week is not Easter.

Your in-laws are not coming into town.

You do not have to take family pictures.

We're doing something a little bit different in this series.

You know, Easter, I don't know if other pastors feel this way, uh, but often it feels like kind of the most pressure and almost the hardest sermon for me to write.

And it should be the easiest because it's like Easter.

You know, like we know what we're gonna talk about on Easter, but at the same time, there are believers who are coming.

And to hear a story that you've heard a thousand times, not only the most important story of all time, but the most often told story.

And to make it inspiring and enlightening and to bring something new to it.

And then of course at Metachurch, we exist for all people.

And there are people who belong here that they just don't quite believe what we believe yet.

And to make it intriguing and to open it up and to show something new, I was wrestling with this.

Wow, why is this so hard for me?

And I was, you know, praying about it.

I try to like pray and prepare, and a lot of times those prayers are like, oh my gosh, I don't know what I'm gonna do, help me, Jesus.

And then I started realizing that oftentimes the stories we know the best are in the most danger of losing dimension.

Let me tell you what I mean by dimension.

Um, the first time I heard my parents' love story, I got all of it.

I understood the timeline, I understood the characters, all of the things that had to come together to make this one magical moment work.

You see, my parents met in college.

They were in a biology lab, they were doing dissection, pretty romantic, they met over a dead frog, you know, it's a beautiful thing.

But so many things could have gone wrong.

My mom actually had signed up to go to a different college.

She went to the college in the 11th hour, she left.

She ended up going to where my dad went.

Now, my dad was there, but he didn't go to college out of school.

In fact, he didn't plan on going to college at all.

My dad was a motorcycle racer, which is, you know, where I get my bad boy vibe from, I'm sure y'all have picked up on.

Um could be farther from the truth.

And uh he shows up, doesn't really love school, and decides to study science, a very difficult degree plan.

By the time my mom gets in biology, my dad is a lab assistant.

Now they didn't know each other, but they had a mutual friend named Roxy.

My dad knew Roxy and my mom knew Roxy, but my mom and dad didn't know each other.

So not only do they end up in the same lab at the same school with my dad as the lab assistant to help her with her dissection, but my mom makes one fateful move.

When she's leaving the dorm in a rush, she puts on Roxy's hat.

My dad comes to help her and says, You're not Roxy.

That's how crazy this is.

That moment, one hat, you're not Roxy, and a Marvin Gay album, and here I am.

And so many things could have gone wrong.

So many things.

Different schools, wasn't gonna go to school, same day, same time, didn't cut class, it all came together.

I remember the first time I heard that.

I understood the timeline, all the different scenarios.

It was like I I could I could picture that that biology room.

I I could see them working together on this project the moment they met.

It was like magic.

Now, the thousandth time I heard that, it was like, oh yeah, you had a hat, met over a frog, it's fine, blah, blah, blah.

It just lost all of it.

It's like quick, truncated, doesn't matter, you lose the detail.

I did kind of an informal poll.

I went around, I talked to friends, I talked to, you know, some believers, non-believers, just to talk about Easter.

Because what we do in the church world is the Sunday before Easter, we teach Palm Sunday.

Jesus riding in this triumphal entry, riding on a donkey into Jerusalem.

The very next Sunday, the next thing we talk about as a church, the next thing is crucified, buried, risen again.

It's so quick.

And so my question was how long after Jesus rode into town was it before he was crucified?

And what I realized is it's lost dimension.

Most people have truncated the timeline.

In most people's minds, they think of Easter.

It's like Jesus rode into town, someone kicked him off his donkey and put him on a cross, and there's so much more that happens.

In fact, there's a week.

A week that in a series we're gonna call Wonder Week.

We're gonna take time to look at each one of these days because they are all building to the most important moment in history.

Every day matters.

Wonder week, seven days, and in those seven days, we're gonna see seven ways that Jesus was preparing us to understand the magnitude of what was coming at Easter.

Today we're gonna look at day one of Wonder Week, Palm Sunday.

Would you guys pray with me?

God, we love you, and I ask that you would guide us on this journey to Easter.

We're starting really early this year, and we want to slow down.

We wanna give it time.

We want to see the dimensions of the story.

We want to see all the ways that it's multifaceted.

We want to see all the angles of Jesus, who he was.

God, I pray that by doing this, it not only becomes more powerful, but that we can find ourselves in this story.

We can see where it relates to us.

God, teach us something new in this series.

Teach us something new today.

We love you.

And we pray these things in Jesus' name.

And everyone who agrees say, Amen.

We're gonna be in Matthew chapter 21.

Matthew 21 · chapter mention

Matthew was one of Jesus' disciples, and he wrote a historical account of the life of Jesus.

This first day of Wonder Week was Palm Sunday.

In Matthew 21, 1, it says, when they approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethpage at the Mount of Olives.

Now, Jesus has been on like a tour all around the Jewish world.

So he lives up in Galilee, which is north of Jerusalem where they're headed now.

He lives in a tiny town called Nazareth.

And Nazareth is nowhere, and the people who live there are no bodies.

As a matter of fact, there was a common saying during Jesus' time about his hometown, and this is what it was.

It was a question Can anything good come from Nazareth?

Could anything good come from Nazareth?

It's like, hey bro, uh, sorry I was late, I stopped in Nazareth and had a burger.

You ate in Nazareth?

Can anything good come from?

It's like there's what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Can anything good come from Nazareth?

It's a terrible, terrible slogan for your town.

In Galilee, Jesus spent most of his time, did most of his miracles in that region, most of his speaking.

People knew of his power.

He left Galilee.

He went around, he spent some time in Jerusalem, which is the center of Jewish worship.

He went down to Jericho.

People all around the region had seen his might, seen his power, heard him speak, seen his miracles.

Jesus' popularity was at an all-time high.

And now, in Matthew 21, the Jewish world is headed to Jerusalem.

They're going there to celebrate the Passover.

And the Passover is a big deal because it celebrates when God freed Israel from Egyptian slavery hundreds of years before.

And each Passover was growing increasingly, increasingly more important.

Because although they were no longer slaves to Egypt, when Jesus was on earth, Israel was under Roman occupation.

They weren't being treated quite as slaves, but they had lost their freedom and they had lost their land.

They were paying taxes to a foreign empire.

Now Rome was cool, they left them alone.

You do your religious thing, we'll keep the peace.

You don't make problems, we won't make problems.

But they knew.

The Jewish people knew at any time Rome could come in and could crush them, could take away their right to their religion, could come in, take their lives, take their land, take anything that they wanted.

They were under Roman rule.

And so as a million plus people caravanned into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, they were celebrating what God had done in their past.

And they were praying that God would send somebody, that he would send a Messiah, that they could rise up, overwhelm and overcome Rome and win back their freedom.

Jesus and his disciples decided to go through a town called Bethany.

It says when they approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethpage, which is right in the vicinity of a town called Bethany.

Bethany's gonna be important in wonder week.

It's gonna be home base.

Bethany was two miles to the east of Jerusalem.

I want to bring some dimension.

I want you to see it.

And each morning, Jesus and the disciples would wake up in Bethany, they would travel the two miles into Jerusalem, and when evening came, they would travel the two miles back out to Bethany.

It says that when they got to this area, Beth Page, Bethany, Jesus sent two disciples, and he told them, Go into the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her.

Untie them and bring them to me.

In verse 3, if anyone says anything, you should say that the Lord needs them, and immediately they will send them.

And Jesus was always asking his disciples to do crazy things.

Like one time Jesus was speaking to like 15,000 people, and the disciples were like, Jesus, great sermon.

Don't mean to interrupt, uh, but we gotta cut these people loose because they're gonna get hungry and uh we don't have any food here.

And Jesus looked back at them and said, Then you feed them.

That's a crazy thing to feed 15,000 people.

Jesus was always doing this.

And now he calls two of them and says, Listen, go to town, hit around the corner, you're gonna see a donkey tied up, just grab it and bring it back.

And the disciples were looking at each other like, did Jesus just tell us to steal a donkey?

Like is this how we go to jail?

Like, is this what's going down?

Jesus, we don't have a donkey.

I don't know what you're talking about.

No, just go, you'll find one, just untie it.

Jesus, that's stealing, right?

He said, not steal, that's stealing.

If we steal the donkey, look, just tell them I need it.

What if they don't know who you are?

Like, this is just this weird mission.

I need it, go get it.

This is day one of Wonder Week, Sunday.

And on the first day, we see the first way that Jesus is preparing us to understand what's coming at Easter.

To understand we have to get that Jesus is king.

All throughout today, we are going to see Jesus as king.

And here's the thing about being king a king gets exactly what a king wants.

Jesus, I don't know that they're gonna just give us a donkey.

Can we rent it?

You know what I'm saying?

Do we is there a day rate?

I don't know how this works.

Jesus says, you let them know the Lord needs it.

He's the king, and the king gets what the king wants.

Which leads to another question.

If the king gets what the king wants, then why is he sending them into town after a baby donkey?

Like if I'm the king, I'm like, listen, you two head into town, take a left.

You're gonna find a Range Rover.

There's gonna be keys on the dashboard.

Go ahead and grab that, bring that back.

We're gonna roll up in Jerusalem in style.

I'm the king.

They need to know.

And said he's like, listen, you're gonna go in, there's gonna be a dodge neon on your left.

All right.

Yeah, the one, the one with no headlights.

Grab that one.

Two donkeys.

A lot of people just picture one donkey.

There's two.

There was a donkey and there was the cult of a donkey.

Baby donkey.

The baby donkey is the one that Jesus rode.

Small donkey.

In fact, most scholars think that the reason they had to bring the mom is because the baby donkey was so young and wasn't quite broken, and so to keep it calm, they had to have the mom there next to it.

I'm talking about a ridiculous scene.

Like if Jesus is an average-sized male, his toes are gonna almost drag the ground riding this donkey.

This is like like Shrek's donkey that he's riding, and he's the king.

Like, and it's it's on purpose.

I mean, Jesus does nothing on accident, he is setting up a moment, and Matthew gets it.

In verse 4, Matthew writes, This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled.

He's talking about in the Jewish scriptures, what we call the Old Testament, the prophet Zechariah.

And Zechariah was talking about the coming of the Messiah.

And this is what he said.

Tell daughter Zion, look, who's coming?

Your king.

Gentle.

Gentle.

Kings aren't gentle, kings are fierce.

Men of war.

Captain of the army.

No, your king's coming.

Gentle.

Mounted on a donkey.

Even on a colt, the foal, the child of a beast of burden.

The picture of a king is not lowly in humility riding a donkey.

A donkey is an animal of work, it's an animal of peace.

Kings ride horses.

More specifically, at that time, they would ride white stallions, big horses, with big, beautiful, ornate saddles that they could come on.

And if you were a real G, you would get a whole chariot and a team of horses in front of you.

Jesus says, Go into town.

There'll be a donkey and a colt.

Bring them back.

And in this first moment, he is already playing with expectations.

It's already started.

In verse 6, it says the disciples went, they did just as Jesus directed them.

They stole that donkey, brought it right back.

They brought the donkey and the colt, they laid their robes on it, and Jesus sat not on a saddle, not in a chariot, just on some robes.

The scene is set, everything's in place.

Prophecy is about to be fulfilled.

They're in Bethany, and Bethany sits right at the Mount of Olives.

The Mount of Olives is covering the scene of Jerusalem.

They can't yet see it.

On their two-mile journey, they first ascend the Mount of Olives, and on the descent, they can finally see it.

They see the spot.

And this is the spot that in the disciples' mind, they're gonna celebrate the Passover.

Jesus is gonna do Jesus things, he's probably gonna heal some people, his popularity will gain even more, and maybe, maybe things will really come to a head because people have kind of started whispering about whether or not Jesus might be the Messiah.

And you see, when they were thinking Messiah, they were thinking the king.

A new king of Israel, a king in the lineage of the great kings like King David and King Solomon, someone who would sit on the throne, crown on his head, scepter in his hand, would lead the armies of Israel, would start the revolution, would overthrow Rome.

Maybe this is the Passover where it all starts.

We get our freedom back, we get our lives back, we get our land back.

The disciples, man, this could be big for them.

It's like, how lucky for them.

Jesus handpicked them.

They're about to run this place.

They're already picking out their rooms in the palace.

They're dreaming about spa days and 10-course meals.

They're ready.

This could be the end of the day.

Their two-mile journey starts getting crazy.

You have to understand the cultural context of people, a nation of people who are desperate.

Rome is in charge.

And all they want and all they can focus on is getting out from under their rule.

And you know, they know the Old Testament, right?

They have the scriptures, they've read the prophecies.

And sometimes we can be in danger of doing what the Jewish nation did.

They read the prophecies of the coming Messiah, and they would read, Here comes your king, and then they would kind of skip those parts.

Oh, he's gentle, he's meek, he's humble, riding on a dog.

They would kind of throw those parts out because those parts don't help.

A gentle king is not what they need, they need a vicious warrior.

So they would ignore the parts of scripture that didn't fit with their agenda.

And sometimes we go into scripture to get something out of God that lines up with what we want in our life.

They missed it.

They were looking for the king who would save them from Rome.

They didn't realize they were getting the Savior who had saved the world from their sins.

Pretty soon, they had joined a caravan that would have been streaming into the city of Jerusalem, hundreds of thousands of people all going to the same destination.

And some of those are from Jericho, where Jesus and his disciples just were, and they had seen the power of God through Jesus' life, and some of those were already in Jerusalem, and they have heard about Jesus raising Lazarus back from the dead, just a few miles outside of Jerusalem in Bethany.

And many of them were from Galilee, near his hometown, where he did the majority of his ministry, and people started noticing him.

Most of them are walking.

Most people can't afford to be riding.

And so they see Jesus.

Kind of a funny scene.

Why is his donkey so small?

I don't really know.

But check it out.

There's Jesus, and everyone's got a story.

Man, I saw this dude one time.

I'm not kidding you.

I was at the lake, uh, lake real late at night.

This bull was walking on water.

I swear I saw, and someone else is like, listen, my neighbor, he was blind, he couldn't even come to Passover.

He's right over there.

Jesus opened his eyes, and another one is like, Man, I didn't think my daughter was gonna make another Passover.

She was right on death's door.

The fever had her, and Jesus just touched her and spoke to her, and all of a sudden, life came back into her body.

And story after story, man, one time Jesus came to my village.

There was like thousands of us, and Jesus fed all of us with like a happy meal.

It was so crazy.

Everyone's got a story of Jesus, and they're all headed to Passover.

Remembering the miracle of Jesus saving them from their captors, hoping for a new miracle for Jesus to be the king that would save them from Rome.

In verse 8, it says a very large crowd began to spread their robes on the road.

They were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road, putting it in front of Jesus and this small colt, going, Man, like you are so awesome.

So we we don't even want, you we don't even want your donkey to have to walk on the dirt.

Like, let's pave a way for him.

In verse 9, it says there were two crowds the crowd who went ahead and those who followed.

Two crowds.

The crowd ahead, travelers who had already made it to Jerusalem, already creating more buzz about who this Jesus guy was, and everyone's sharing stories about what he's done, people who already live in Jerusalem, who have heard and seen the power of Jesus, and then the crowd behind.

Travelers from Galilee, from Jericho, from Bethpage, from Bethany, from everywhere that Jesus had done his work.

And I don't know if you've ever seen like a riot break out, but it happens really slow.

One time in the early 2000s, I was at a rock concert, Three Days Grace.

Anybody remember those guys?

Yeah, me neither, but I went to their concert one time and I didn't know what tickets I was buying, and I was like on the floor, and I hadn't been to a real rock show before.

I kind of grew up more on like hip-hop, and so I'm like, okay, this is cool and this band is cool.

I didn't know about this thing called mosh pit.

A mosh pit is where people just hit each other in a circle.

It's the weirdest thing, and I wasn't ready, I wasn't really prepared for that.

And I know my dad drove motorcycles, but I'm you know, I'm a little softer than that.

And so pretty soon I would see the mosh pit, and I would just I would just get away, you know, and it was working pretty well.

And then all of a sudden I end up in front of this guy, a little bit shorter guy, and he's in front of me, and I don't know what happened, but something happened with this guy and the girl that he was with, and apparently the girl he was with us to be another dude's girl.

And so the guy who's mad comes up, I'm in between them, he comes behind me and throws his whole beer on the guy in front of me.

Now, being an athlete, I caught the cup.

Oh, so the guy turned around, that guy hit with all the beer, and I had the cup.

And then I ran faster than I've ever run, ever.

And he hit the other dude, and it started small.

But pretty soon the whole floor was in a riot.

It was crazy.

It started small and then it spread.

Now, this was a uh uh less rageful uh riot, but nonetheless, pandemonium starts breaking out on this two-mile stretch between Bethany and Jerusalem, and people are passing forward and backwards, and some people might even be running forward, like Jesus is coming, man.

People are freaking out.

What if he's the guy?

What if he's the king?

What if he's the Messiah?

And they all joined together.

They started shouting in unison, Hosanna to the son of David.

He who comes in the name of the Lord, who's the blessed one, Hosanna in the highest heaven in every line matters.

Hosanna is a greeting often reserved for royalty.

To who?

To the son of David.

They know the prophecies, they know that the Messiah is coming through the lineage of King David, the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

To stand in the name of someone else is to directly represent them.

Hosanna all the way to the highest heaven.

And the crowd has decided unanimously that Jesus is worthy of praise and adoration and worship all the way up to the throne room of God.

The nation had decided.

Jesus, Jesus is king.

And we've never seen power like his power.

And we have never seen movement like his movement, and we've never heard words like the ones that he speaks.

And the nation.

Is ready.

They're ready to crown him as the king.

The caravan makes its way into Jerusalem.

In verse 10, when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was shook.

A whole city.

Swelling with over a million people.

The whole city was shaken and they were saying, Who is this?

Now they weren't actually asking, like, who is this?

They knew the who.

Unless they'd been living under a rock.

They knew Jesus.

They were saying, Who is this?

Who is this guy?

We've never seen anything like it.

A whole city ready to hand him the throne.

In verse 11, the crowd kept saying, This is the prophet Jesus.

And you'll never guess where.

He's from Nazareth.

He grew up a nobody, born in obscurity, lived in poverty 30 years as a carpenter.

Now, three years later, this is Jesus, the prophet, the one that they are ready to crown as king.

And I can't imagine the temptation of the adoration of a whole nation.

Unbelievable.

Jesus had the power, he had the influence, he had the people on his side.

Not to mention, he's 100% man, he's also 100% God, has all the power of heaven inside of him.

King of Israel, that's too small.

Jesus can kick Caesar off the throne.

Jesus can be the king of the world.

You know, we live in a society where everyone is living to be the king.

Now none of us have what Jesus has.

None of us roll into work and people take off their jackets and lay it down, let us walk across and cheer for us, call us Hosanna.

Like, we don't have that.

And still, we live in a society where every, every, everybody wants to be king.

We live in a world of ladders, and we're all trying to climb them.

And so much of our life is spent looking at what's next that we forget to actually live life right where we are.

You get a little bit up in elementary, and all you can think about is middle school.

And you get to middle school, and all you want is high school.

And high school's not good enough, you want to go to college.

And you go to college, you want to start your career.

And get your career, you want to get married.

You get married, you want to have kids.

You get kids, you want to get kids out of the house.

You want to get retired.

Like you always want what's next.

And too many people get to the end of their life and realize they never lived life while they had it.

Just trying to climb the ladder.

Some of you, if I met you in a restaurant, you would be the nicest, most just personable individual.

And if I was a fly on the wall at your work, you are cutthroat.

You will step on anyone who gets in your way, that promotion is yours, and you're gonna grab it.

We all want to be king.

Some of you want to be the king of your castle.

You view your spouse and your children as people who are there to serve you and your needs instead of seeing them as treasures given to you by God for you to serve them.

Some of you are so desperate to raise your status in the sight of your peers and your friends that you are actively going against your conscience.

You are actively under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and you continue to do things that are against your moral center because you just gotta climb the ladder.

We all want to be king, we all want to be great.

It's where everything fell apart in the garden with Adam and Eve.

They wanted to be their own God.

Jesus has his opportunity.

Hosanna, the son of David, who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna, the most high heavens.

We're gonna walk through seven days of Wonder Week, and every single day you're going to watch Jesus actively walk away from the opportunity to be king.

And here's why: because Jesus had a grander vision, and he knew that he could not allow the chance of Messiah to get in the way of his mission.

And he knew that while this looked like a coronation for a king, that it was ultimately gonna end in a crucifixion for a savior, and there would be no crown except the one made of thorns, and there would be no throne, he would be nailed to a cross.

And Jesus did not come to save Israel from Rome, he came to save the world from our sins.

A grander vision and a greater purpose.

And I wonder if the lesson of this Easter season for us is that the way up, because we all want to go up, we all want to be higher, we all want status, we all want power.

What if the way up is down?

What if the way to significance is through a sacrificial life for the benefit of others?

The Apostle Paul, a few years after Wonder Week, looked back on it and said, This Jesus humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even to death on a cross, and for this reason.

Not because Jesus was popular, not because he did miracles, not because of his power or influence, for this reason, because he lived a life of humility, because he would ride in on a donkey, because he didn't need the white horse, because he didn't need the power, because he rejected the throne for the cross for this reason.

God highly exalted him.

He gave him the name that's above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Jesus, you have to get this Jesus is king.

He didn't need the throne of Israel because he was a king before he ever showed up.

He is the king, he was the king, and he always will be the king.

And because of his great love for you, he allows you to try and be the king of your own life.

And he understands that perfect love requires freedom, even the freedom to walk away from him, even the freedom not to serve him, the freedom to live your life, to try and bring glory to your own name instead of living to lift high the name of Jesus.

We have the freedom to spit in the face of our Savior.

He gives that to us in this life.

But I also need you to know that one day, on the other side of this life, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

And if you have lived trying to be your own God and your own king and run from him on that day, you will be made painfully aware that Jesus is, that he was, and that he always will be king.

Jesus is king.

The question for Wonder Week is will you let him be?

Will you submit to him?

Will you serve him?

By the end of Wonder Week, Jesus had destroyed every single expectation.

The crowd expected him to be king, to overthrow Rome.

The disciples expected that they would join him, living a life of comfort in the palace.

Everyone had the wrong expectations.

Perhaps the greatest thing that could happen to you this Easter season is for your own expectations for your life, the ones that have been fueled by your own selfish ambition, for them to fall apart, for you to get a grander vision for your life.

And instead of pushing forward your own agenda to be your own king, if you could get on the path to living out your God-given purpose.

And some of you have selfish dreams.

And if you would allow those dreams to die, you would finally be able to see your destiny.

And it might look like going down, but often the way up is down.

And the path to where you're supposed to be comes through a life of humility.

The question we all have to answer is this Who is Jesus?

He got into Jerusalem and they said, Who is this guy?

Every one of us before the end of our life have to wrestle with that question.

Who is Jesus to you?

To some, he's a fictional character made up, like all religions, to just make us feel better about dying someday.

To others, he's a historical character who did some good.

Some people see him as a great teacher, a philosopher.

But Jesus said that he's God Himself.

Jesus said that he paid the price of your sins that separate you from God.

Jesus says he's king.

Will you serve him?

Would you pray with me?

God, we love you.

And we thank you for this time.

We thank you that Jesus showed us a new way.

A new way to be king, a new way to pursue greatness, a new way to live life.

God, we can try to exalt ourselves now and be humbled later, or we can humble ourselves now and be exalted by you in eternity.

And God, we want so badly to be a movement that is marked by humility, that follows in the footsteps of our King Jesus.

We love you.

I pray that you help us to that end.
