  1. Welcome to the MetaCurch Podcast.

  2. My name's Clayton.

  3. I'm the pastor here at Medichurch.

  4. And my hope is that today's podcast finds you at the perfect time in your life that God uses it to inspire and enlighten you.

  5. I hope that you enjoy today's message.

  6. Alright, MetaCurch, how are you guys doing?

  7. So glad that you guys have joined us.

  8. If you're new with us, my name is Clayton.

  9. I'm the lead pastor here at MetaCurch, and we are in day two of our Wonder Week series.

  10. As uh I was looking towards Easter this year and really just seeking uh what God wanted us to do here at MetaCurch.

  11. I shared with y'all last week my concern that over time the Easter story has lost some of its dynamic.

  12. And any story that we hear too many times is in danger of this.

  13. It loses dimension.

  14. And we start seeing Jesus as just this uh almost robotic, non-emotional, unidimensional character who glides through life and just goes to the cross because that's what Jesus has asked him to do.

  15. And there's so much more.

  16. And so we started our journey to Easter early so that we could slow down and take our time.

  17. You know, in the church world, tradition is the Sunday before Easter, you talk about Palm Sunday, which we talked about here last week.

  18. And this is the moment that Jesus enters Jerusalem.

  19. He's riding on the back of a donkey, and people are shouting praises to him.

  20. Hosanna to the Son of David, Hosanna and the highest, the one who comes in the name of the Lord, they're ready to crown him as king.

  21. And then you leave church that day and you go live your life.

  22. And you wrestle with work and parenting, crazy kids, and finances, and fighting with your spouse and just trying to make it through the week.

  23. And you get there to next Sunday, and they pick up the story, and they're at the cross and the burial and the resurrection.

  24. And the truth is it happens so quick.

  25. And so it can be a little bit confusing how the people who were so excited to see him and just shouting praise and adoration are some of the same people who are then crying, crucify him.

  26. And the reason for the disconnect is that there's an entire week in between there.

  27. It's what we're calling Wonder Week, the seven days that changed everything.

  28. And every one of these days is important because every day shows us a different way that Jesus was preparing us to understand his greatest act at Easter.

  29. As I was thinking about this loss of dynamic, uh, it reminded me of people who read the novel and then the book comes out.

  30. And the people who haven't read the book, you go to the movie and you think it's wonderful.

  31. And then there's always those people who have read the book and they say, Yeah, uh, the movie was fine, but not as good as the book.

  32. Oh my gosh, can I just tell you I hate that so much?

  33. You know what?

  34. The movie took me two hours to watch, and I'm done.

  35. I don't care.

  36. I remember when uh Lord of the Rings came out.

  37. The people who had read the books were insufferable.

  38. Don't even go see the movie with them.

  39. Well, you know, technically it would have taken Frodo seven months to walk from the Shire to Mount Dew.

  40. I don't care! I don't have seven months to watch a movie.

  41. Harry Potter people, the worst.

  42. Harry actually never would have worn glasses because technically it's like, who cares?

  43. And then it happened.

  44. A movie came out, great movie, Christian movie.

  45. It's called The Shack.

  46. It's one of the books that I'd read that year.

  47. The book made me weep.

  48. The movie made me cry because the movie was not as good as the book.

  49. I finally get it.

  50. And really what happens is uh I started to understand that the movie, as great as it is and as visual as it is, it begins to lose dimension.

  51. And when you only have two hours, you can only develop a character so much.

  52. And how frustrating is it to have invested time really reading the story?

  53. And in the novel, the character is complex, and there's backstory, and there's time, and there's all these different facets and dimensions to go then see the movie, and they're just very one-dimensional static character.

  54. It's frustrating.

  55. And a lot of times things like character development and timeline get drumped by things like plot development and action sequences, and so it can be very frustrating.

  56. And I thought this is what happens to Easter.

  57. Everything gets truncated, it gets condensed, and the greatest, most transformative moment in history gets relegated to a mere yearly tradition.

  58. We're gonna keep moving through these seven days and these seven ways that Jesus was preparing us to really understand Easter.

  59. Last week it was Sunday, day one, and we saw Jesus as King.

  60. Today we're moving in to Monday.

  61. And before we jump in, would you guys join me in prayer?

  62. God, we love you, and we thank you for Easter.

  63. And we want to know you.

  64. Um Jesus, we want to know you better and better.

  65. There's no one more important than you in our lives.

  66. It is you that we're seeking to follow.

  67. God, I pray that you would take this series, that today you would take this message, and uh so much more than just the words that I'm gonna speak, God, that you would take them and your spirit would do something with them in our hearts and minds, that you would show us yourself in new, inspiring, refreshing ways.

  68. We love you.

  69. We thank you for this time together.

  70. We pray it in Jesus' name, and everyone who's ready say, Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. We are uh moving on to Monday.

  73. And Monday is traditionally known as the hardest day of the week.

  74. Is anyone willing to admit uh I just don't do Mondays well?

  75. Like Mondays are just a little bit hard for me.

  76. Mondays are very difficult for me.

  77. Um I don't know, out of everything I've done in my life, uh, preaching, especially we you know, we do four services here, it is the most interesting combination of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion.

  78. And I'm not good for about 24 hours.

  79. Sometimes I get meetings scheduled on Monday morning.

  80. I don't know which Clayton Tyner is showing up Monday morning to your meeting.

  81. It will not be the best version of myself.

  82. It just takes me a little while.

  83. Others of you, you have the same spirit upon your life on Mondays, the the spirit of Garfield the Cat.

  84. You just can't do it, you just hate Mondays.

  85. And uh it can be it can be hard.

  86. Jesus seems like he has a rough Monday.

  87. I want to continue building in dimension and setting the scene.

  88. We saw last week that Jesus, along with about a million other Jewish people, had traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.

  89. And all of these people crowded the city.

  90. Most of them stayed inside of Jerusalem.

  91. They stayed with family or they would get together at a motel or an inn.

  92. And Jesus and his disciples did something a little bit different.

  93. Jesus anticipated just the crowds and their involvement with him and their pressing need for him, and so they stayed in a suburb.

  94. They stayed two miles to the east of Jerusalem with some friends in a town called Bethany.

  95. And every morning they would wake up and they would travel the two miles.

  96. They would go up the Mount of Olives and then descend down into Jerusalem.

  97. And in the evening, they would go back, and on day one, they got a donkey, and everyone was traveling in, and they joined the caravan, and the caravan recognized Jesus from his three years of ministry.

  98. And man, they freaked out, Hosanna, and they shouted, and they were ready to crown him as king.

  99. And Sunday evening he went back to Bethany, and now it's Monday.

  100. Monday he wakes up and him and his disciples they take the two-mile trip, and the first thing they do is they go into the temple.

  101. And this is a great move because Israel is ready to crown Jesus king.

  102. Now, why do they want a king?

  103. We saw last week that Israel is under Roman occupation.

  104. They've lost their freedom and they're desperate.

  105. They are desperate for a king to raise up a military, to defeat Rome, to get their land back, to get their freedom back, to get their lives back.

  106. And what a great move.

  107. The first place he goes on Monday is the temple.

  108. And the temple is the center of Jewish community, of Jewish power, and of Jewish religion.

  109. If you were going to become king, you would go to the temple.

  110. You would go right to the seat of power, right to the center of the community, the center of the Passover festival.

  111. It's where he goes.

  112. But on Monday, Jesus is going to continue his path of breaking down every expectation.

  113. In Matthew's gospel, chapter 21, verse 12, it says, Jesus went into the temple and he threw out of the temple all of those buying and selling.

  114. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling doves.

  115. This is a startling moment for the thousands and thousands of people who would have been crowded in and around the temple.

  116. I don't know, some of you might have grown up going to Mass, Catholic Mass.

  117. And it's a somewhat of a comparison of just the vibe and energy of the room.

  118. Things are done in order, things are done specifically.

  119. There's tradition built around it.

  120. And in this moment of solidarity and a pious environment, Jesus comes in and begins to wreak absolute havoc.

  121. It's shocking.

  122. It's the most surprising thing he could have possibly done.

  123. To understand it and continue building in all of uh the visuals of where Jesus was.

  124. The temple operated in like these concentric areas.

  125. And the very outermost area is what they called the Gentile courtyard.

  126. This is where non-Jews, Gentiles, people who were not Jewish by birth, but believed in the God of Judaism, could come.

  127. And that was the place where they could worship and they could pray and they could connect with their God.

  128. The next layer in was for people who were Jewish only.

  129. It was about ancestry.

  130. Whoever your great-great greatest grandfather was determined whether or not you could get in.

  131. The next layer in was only for the priests.

  132. And so the leaders of the Jewish movement could go in there.

  133. And the final layer, the most innermost part of the temple, was called the Holy of Holies.

  134. And only the high priest, the top dog of the hierarchy, only he was allowed inside.

  135. In the outermost courtyard is where Jesus begins to wreak havoc on the entire system and everything that is going on.

  136. And the most incredible part of this is that Jesus, this is gonna be important for us today.

  137. Jesus flipped the tables.

  138. That's a crazy thing to do.

  139. Like if you watch television shows, the most dramatic thing they can do in a television show to show how upset someone is is if they flip the table.

  140. Like, like there are so many memes of like when this happens, you know what?

  141. Time to flip the table.

  142. Like this is the last straw, the argument is over, I'm done talking to you.

  143. Boom, flips the table.

  144. And can you imagine being there?

  145. It's like on Sunday, we're worshiping Jesus.

  146. He's coming in, he's gonna be king.

  147. We've heard all about him, we've seen his power.

  148. And on Monday, he's in the temple.

  149. Yo, Jesus is in the temple right now.

  150. I'm gonna say something to him.

  151. Jesus! Hosanna, remember that thing?

  152. Hosanna! All right, so you're gonna army that's fine.

  153. Jesus! Oh, he's going to the tables.

  154. He's going, oh snap.

  155. Jesus ran into the table.

  156. Jesus, you good?

  157. You okay?

  158. Oh, snap.

  159. He threw over another table.

  160. This might, I think this might be on purpose.

  161. It's like, what happened?

  162. What's wrong with Jesus?

  163. He's in the Gentile courtyard, and this sermon's been preached in a lot of different directions.

  164. Because one thing it shows us is it shows some dimension to Jesus.

  165. He had emotion.

  166. It shows anger.

  167. And it's an important lesson.

  168. I've heard this message many times about how there's a way to be angry and not sin.

  169. And that's when we get angry about the things that anger God.

  170. Righteous anger.

  171. It's a real thing, and it's important.

  172. It's important to learn.

  173. But it's deeper.

  174. And what I want to see is not just learning this story and learning something about the humanity and emotion of Jesus as disconnected from the larger story of Wonder Week.

  175. I want to see where it's going because it's deeper.

  176. And he's not just flipping the table of the money changers, he is flipping the table on religion itself.

  177. He is signaling to them that something brand new is getting ready to happen.

  178. You see, what was happening in the Gentile courtyard is they had turned it into a marketplace.

  179. One of the things you did during Passover is you went to the temple and you made a sacrifice.

  180. Now, making a sacrifice, uh, you you won't believe this, is um is a sacrifice.

  181. You know, it's like you gotta get your lamb, is what the sacrifice calls for.

  182. It's what they did on the first Passover.

  183. And you might live up north in Galilee or down south in Jericho or out to the east in Bethany or Beth Page and beyond, and you gotta travel now, not just with your kids, not just with your in-laws.

  184. Now you gotta bring an animal to bring to the temple.

  185. And not only that, but not everyone can afford it.

  186. And so there are scales to the sacrifices because Jesus knows it's not about what you bring, it's about how you bring it.

  187. It's about your heart behind it.

  188. So if you can't afford a land, then you give some doves.

  189. You can't afford doves, you give bread.

  190. Can't afford bread, you give a grain offering.

  191. There's all these different ways that you can give a sacrifice.

  192. And what they did is they sold the animals, they sold the means to your sacrifice right there in the temple courtyard.

  193. It's like drive-thru offering.

  194. Gonna make it as easy as possible.

  195. You just show up.

  196. Now there was a problem because Israel was under Roman occupation, and so you couldn't buy the animals with anything except Roman money.

  197. So you would have to change it.

  198. And what we see in history is that these money changers were taking advantage of the normal everyday people of Israel.

  199. They didn't know exchange rates.

  200. So they would give them a little and they would require a lot.

  201. Stealing right in the house of God.

  202. So on one hand, they're making your offering as easy as possible, literally taking the sacrifice out of your sacrifice.

  203. On the other hand, you have men who are corrupt stealing from those who are less fortunate.

  204. And Jesus walks in and he has absolutely had enough.

  205. And what we see with Jesus flipping the tables is so critical.

  206. Because we often think about Jesus being angry, and we feel permission to be angry, and historically the church has aimed our anger in the wrong direction.

  207. And what happens is we take the excuse for righteous anger and we point it at the things that we feel like might threaten the glory of God.

  208. And for too long, the church and Judaism at that time saw itself as the protector of God's glory.

  209. And so you can't wear shorts to church because to come to church, you gotta bring some respect and put some respect on the name of God.

  210. So you better find yourself a suit.

  211. And if you can't afford a suit, you might not want to come.

  212. You dress your best.

  213. You gotta show up, you gotta act the right way, talk the right way, think the right way, memorize the words, you gotta sing the harmonies to the song, cover up the tattoos as if God doesn't see right down to the very broken part of your heart.

  214. You see, God called the Jewish people, he instituted temple worship, and it was all meant for relationship.

  215. The sacrifices, the offerings, the traditions, it was all for relationship.

  216. And over the years, what Jesus had to flip the table on is they had moved from relationship to religion.

  217. Relationship says, how much can I possibly give to show my extravagant love for you?

  218. Religion says, What is the least amount I can possibly give to check the box and be good?

  219. Drive-through offering.

  220. And so often we start focusing on what to do.

  221. That's religion, and not why to do it.

  222. They had gone off track.

  223. And so Jesus flips the table.

  224. We have to understand why he's mad.

  225. He tells us, we don't have to like imagine it.

  226. In the very next verse, 13, he said to them, It is written, my house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves.

  227. The den of thieves, we already know.

  228. They're taking the sacrifice out of sacrifice, they're cheating people on the exchange of money, but we missed the first part.

  229. This is supposed to be a house of prayer.

  230. And the Jewish people had grown to see non-Jews, the Gentiles, as dogs, as wretched, worthless, barbarians.

  231. Jesus is making a statement.

  232. He is standing in the Gentile courtyard saying, This is supposed to be a place of prayer.

  233. And you have prioritized it as a place of profit.

  234. And people who don't have the correct great-great greatest grandpa, who don't have the ancestry, who weren't lucky enough to be born into a Jewish family, where do they have to worship now?

  235. Their only place is the Gentile courtyard, and the Gentile courtyard is now being used.

  236. Not for the purposes of God, but for the purposes of man.

  237. And how quickly does religion get us off course?

  238. And Jesus isn't subtle.

  239. You know, we have a saying the tables have turned, you know?

  240. It's like things are beginning to change.

  241. Oh, how the tables have turned.

  242. Jesus doesn't have time for that.

  243. He's not turning tables, he's flipping them.

  244. And all the people who are ready to crown him king are now observing some very erratic behavior, wondering, maybe, maybe we've got the wrong guy.

  245. On day one of Wonder Week, we see Jesus as king.

  246. Today we see Jesus as prophet.

  247. Prophets were people that God would almost download this new revelation to, new truths that they would speak out and would become permanent in the movement of God.

  248. One thing all these prophets, if you read the Old Testament, have in common, is uh they all were also a little bit crazy.

  249. Uh, I have some examples.

  250. Um, Isaiah walked around completely naked, in the nude for like a long season of time, right?

  251. Crazy, making a point, not just saying with his words, but showing the prophet Jeremiah, he wore for years the yoke of an oxen across his shoulders.

  252. He would never take it off.

  253. The prophet Ezekiel, one time he laid down on his left side for a whole year, 384 days actually.

  254. When he was done, he rolled over and laid on his right side for another 384 days.

  255. The prophet Hosea married a prostitute.

  256. The prophet John the Baptist lived in the wilderness, wore camel hair, and ate crickets.

  257. Crazy.

  258. And now Jesus is acting as prophet.

  259. And not only is he bringing revelation, not only is he speaking the prophecy that all of this Judais sacrificial system is going away, something brand new is coming, but he's also doing the craziest thing he possibly could have done that day.

  260. He is in the center of worship, the shrine of their environment.

  261. And Jesus is slipping the tables.

  262. And sometimes God asks us to do things that seem crazy.

  263. I mean, if we're really listening and we're really following, there are things that God asks us to do, and there are ways that He leads us and promptings that He places in our hearts that if we were to follow through, we would feel crazy.

  264. You know how much money I'm gonna lose, Jesus?

  265. Like if I do that, like I get it, but I'm gonna lose so much money.

  266. And money's good because the more money I have, the more money I give to the church.

  267. And you want me to give the church, right?

  268. We have all these excuses.

  269. It's like, man, I can't do that.

  270. I'm too introverted.

  271. God, you made me introverted.

  272. If I'm introverted, why would I get up in front of people and speak like y'all think I'm this crazy extrovert?

  273. Come find me in a restaurant, come find me in my house.

  274. Like, oh, I'm so extroverted, guy.

  275. I can't go sit in solitude.

  276. Oh, we have all these excuses.

  277. Man, that would just be so crazy.

  278. And I'll be honest, like walking around naked, that's crazy.

  279. Eating crickets, that's nasty and crazy.

  280. Like flipping the tables, crazy.

  281. But what these people knew.

  282. Is that the only thing crazier than what they did would be to not obey God?

  283. And when God asks you to do something crazy, the most non-crazy thing you can do is trust him and follow through with it anyway.

  284. God, we don't know.

  285. He sees the end from the beginning.

  286. Jesus as prophet, he's not just flipping the table because he's mad about the money, because he's mad about the sacrifice, because he's mad.

  287. He is flipping the table and turning religion on its head.

  288. They'd gotten off course, they had substituted religion for relationship.

  289. And you guys know this, but when I was in college, I I gave up on the church.

  290. I didn't think I'd ever be a part of the church.

  291. And man, I love Jesus so much.

  292. I had just spent four years like running from God as hard as I could, being crazy, leaving behind all kinds of regrets and all kinds of skeletons and all kinds of closets.

  293. And man, God had showed up and rescued my life, and I was ready to live for him.

  294. But I got involved in church and it was too much, too much hypocrisy, too much putting tradition over the needs of people, too much trying to protect the glory of God and making sure that the wrong kind of people stayed outside the walls of the church building.

  295. I just couldn't do it.

  296. And all these years later, Starting meta church.

  297. The people who knew me back then couldn't believe that I would start a church.

  298. And here's the thing: y'all know meta means change.

  299. We say change church, and the only reason that we would step out in faith and start something new and actually give our entire lives and sacrifice to start a church is if we believed that a movement of people would come together and be willing to flip the tables on the religiosity and control and manipulation who has pushed people out for too long.

  300. I want you to see what happens as soon as he does this.

  301. As soon as he flips the table, watch what happens.

  302. It says, the blind and the lame, the disabled came to him in the temple and he healed them.

  303. And at this time, they had gotten this idea in their head that if you had a disability, it was a curse.

  304. God didn't love you the same.

  305. You had some sin in your life or some sin in your family.

  306. Many synagogues, these other Jewish places of worship, many of them wouldn't allow the disabled in.

  307. And we're so politically correct that we're like, oh my, like, how could you?

  308. How dare you?

  309. You know.

  310. And if we're honest, we can look around our society.

  311. And we can still see people marginalized, ostracized.

  312. We can still see people on the fringes.

  313. And I promise you, there are still groups of people in society who do not believe that they belong in church.

  314. Who do not believe that they would find a home.

  315. And I thank God because Metachurch has become a place for all people, but I promise you, the day, the day that any segment of our society can point at Metachurch and say, I don't belong there, we are off course.

  316. We have to be willing to flip the table, to flip religiosity.

  317. We have to be doing willing to do whatever it takes.

  318. We have to give up the quest to try and protect the glory of God.

  319. He's been doing it fine on his own for all these years.

  320. He has all the power, and he's not called us to protect his glory.

  321. He has called us to share his glory with the people who need it the most.

  322. The blind and the deaf, the lame, the disabled, they came to him.

  323. Immediately, another discounted group of society shows up in verse 15 when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that he did, and there were children shouting in the temple, Hosanna to the son of David.

  324. The religious leaders, the scribes, says they were indignant.

  325. Children at that time were meant to just sit down and shut up.

  326. And maybe you grew up in church where that was kind of the deal.

  327. It's like sit down.

  328. There was no meta kids, you know what I'm saying?

  329. It was like sit down and don't get beat.

  330. Like that was the goal of church.

  331. Like sit down, like if you have to sneeze, sneeze on the inside, you know what I'm saying?

  332. Because you're gonna catch a hand.

  333. That's that's that's church.

  334. And why?

  335. Why can't a kid, and I know, let me let me let me say two things.

  336. Sometimes y'all's kids cry in here.

  337. I'm gonna say that right now.

  338. And uh this is not in my script, I don't know where I'm going here.

  339. Um sometimes y'all's kids cry, and um, so two things.

  340. Sometimes y'all's kids cry, and and we have metakids right back there.

  341. Y'all know that?

  342. That's that's one thing I was gonna say that real quick.

  343. It's like literally a place for your for your kid.

  344. Um and sometimes y'all's kids cry and you're not ready to put them in Metakids.

  345. And and and you guys know this.

  346. We're working, we're working on a building down the road, we're praying for it, we're praying a door open.

  347. There's gonna be a lobby where you can watch the video and you can do everything else, and there's nowhere to take your kid, and and maybe I don't know, maybe it's your first kid, maybe you're scared to drop him off or whatever else.

  348. I I get it.

  349. And so, two things.

  350. We record these, they go to our other venues, they do.

  351. It's it's better to not have a kid crying.

  352. It is better, but your kid can cry and you don't have to be worried that you are somehow offending the glory of God because your kid is crying in here.

  353. And why did our parents grow up smacking us if we sneezed in church?

  354. It wasn't it wasn't for their sake or our sake, it was because in the sanctuary of our churches, we were protecting the glory of God.

  355. No talking, no crying, sit up, pay attention.

  356. We've just we've done it for too long.

  357. And as bad as it was for us growing up in the Jewish culture, I mean, this was way more strict.

  358. That they saw kids as nuisance, that they had no purpose, no meaning.

  359. They were like, they were like possessions, you know?

  360. And all of a sudden, these kids see Jesus and they start saying something very peculiar.

  361. Hosanna to the son of David.

  362. Where'd they get that from?

  363. Did they make that up?

  364. Some of you were here last week.

  365. We talked about Sunday of Wonder Week when Jesus was riding on a donkey and he was heading into town.

  366. And you remember the first part of what they were chanting?

  367. They were saying, Hosanna to the son of David.

  368. And the kids were watching, like, who's this dude?

  369. Who's the guy on the donkey?

  370. His dad's name's David.

  371. I didn't know that.

  372. I thought his dad's name was Joseph.

  373. His dad's David?

  374. I'm confused now.

  375. They didn't know, but now they're in the temple and they've just seen him, not just healing the lame and the blind, not just healing the disabled, but they saw a religious leader putting his hands on them.

  376. And sometimes in all our wisdom and all our experience and all our knowledge, we miss what it takes the faith of a child to see.

  377. The religious leaders saw it, they were indignant.

  378. In verse 16, the scribes said to Jesus, Do you hear what these children are saying?

  379. And they need Jesus to do something about it because Hosanna to the son of David, you know, last week we saw this is a messianic claim, like this is the Messiah.

  380. They're saying that Jesus was actually sent directly from God.

  381. They said, This is blasphemy.

  382. You gotta do something about this.

  383. Do you hear him, Jesus?

  384. And Jesus answers their question with a question.

  385. And this is why we gotta slow down, because this is a beautiful moment because Jesus is about to roast these fools so hard.

  386. If we don't slow down, we're not gonna see it.

  387. The scribes say, Do you hear?

  388. And Jesus replies, Yes.

  389. Have you never read?

  390. You know what scribes do for a living?

  391. They read the scriptures.

  392. Jesus is about to quote out of the Psalms.

  393. You know what you have to do to become a scribe?

  394. You have to memorize every single one of the psalms.

  395. Jesus, you hear this?

  396. You fools never read?

  397. It's like this is like going in for surgery and looking at your doctor being like, hey bro, ever heard of medical school?

  398. You know what I'm saying?

  399. Like, like, it's like this is like you running to one of the Dallas Cowboys, like, hey bro, ever heard of a football?

  400. That's kind of accurate right now, actually, but he says, Have you never read?

  401. And then he quotes the Psalms.

  402. You've prepared praise.

  403. Not from the mouths of the wise, the scribes, the religious elite, the spiritually superior.

  404. You've prepared praise from the mouths of infants and from nursing babes.

  405. And then Jesus drops the mic, verse 17, then he left.

  406. He went out of the city, two miles back, up the Mount of Olives, ascended into Bethany, and spent the night there.

  407. On day one, Jesus is king.

  408. Everyone knows that, everyone feels that, everyone's desperate for it.

  409. On day two, Jesus is a prophet.

  410. And the adoration of the crowd on day one would have been a great temptation to many of us.

  411. And for Jesus to be king, all he had to do was show up to the temple.

  412. That's a great move.

  413. Go to the courtyard, buy a lamb, and everyone would have watched in awe as he went up the steps to make his sacrifice.

  414. There's our king.

  415. There he goes.

  416. But on day two, Jesus took the first step of many, of making sure that he wasn't there for coronation, he was there for execution.

  417. And it seemed crazy, but it wasn't crazy.

  418. Jesus is taking intentional steps to the cross.

  419. And the people thought that he came to destroy Rome, not the temple.

  420. Jesus was flipping the table on more than the money changers.

  421. He was flipping the table on an entire way of life, calling people to a new movement, something brand new that would get rid of all of the stigmas and binding of religion and instead push people back into real relationship with our Heavenly Father.

  422. And so, what does the role of Jesus as prophet have to do with our life today?

  423. There's a big change that happens with Jesus because before Jesus there were prophets and they were given prophecy.

  424. Prophecy, new revelation.

  425. After Jesus, we are called to prophesy.

  426. Now there's a difference.

  427. Prophecy is new revelation, new truths from God to permanently guide how we live this life.

  428. To prophesy is to speak out those truths over our life, over our world, and just as Jesus did to speak these truths to power.

  429. And so many people, even in the New Testament church, were desperate to be the one who got to give new revelation.

  430. I want to be a part of the signs and wonders.

  431. I want to see something miraculous happen through me.

  432. And ultimately it wasn't about God, it became about them again.

  433. That's the very problem with religion.

  434. And Jesus says, You have all the truths you need right here.

  435. The world doesn't need new revelation.

  436. What it needs is people who are willing to speak truth to power.

  437. That's not revelation, that's revolution.

  438. And our world is getting darker, and hope is being strangled out by just the chokehold of evil, and people are living on the margins of society.

  439. And most people do not know the hope in Jesus, and they do not know that a place exists like Medichurch.

  440. And the only reason every single seat isn't full in every single service, in every single venue, is because too many people are existing outside of this movement who have no idea that we are desperate for them to be a part of it.

  441. And how will they know if people do not rise up and prophesy to speak the truth and power of God out into our world?

  442. We are called to be bearers of truth.

  443. Not to protect the glory of God, but to push forward the glory of God by reaching the people that no one else is reaching.

  444. We're called to prophesy over our relationships.

  445. Anything we leave alone in our life will drift back to the status quo.

  446. And the status quo of the world is moving in opposition to God.

  447. It needs to be flipped.

  448. Our finances, our career, our parenting.

  449. We can observe every area of our life and anything that is moved to the status quo away from the purposes of God, we have to flip the tables.

  450. We do it by speaking truth to power.

  451. We do it because we are a movement that flips tables.

  452. We are a movement that does whatever it takes to get the people that no one else even cares to reach to get them to Jesus.

  453. And listen, people are gonna think you're crazy, and you might be a little crazy.

  454. Let them think it.

  455. Be a little crazy.

  456. If it means actually living out your purpose, it's worth it.

  457. And it might make people a little uncomfortable.

  458. Let them be uncomfortable.

  459. Speaking truth to power is difficult.

  460. It's why most people won't do it.

  461. It's why most people attending church are comfortable sitting in a service once a week and believing that they've done church.

  462. Church is not something that you do, the church is something that you are, and the church, not even the power of hell itself, can overcome it.

  463. It is time that we prophesy.

  464. Speaking the truth to power is dangerous.

  465. Jesus could have been king and said he was killed.

  466. It started in the temple.

  467. It started with a willingness to flip the tables.

  468. If we are willing to do the same, we will see the power of God unleashed among us like nothing we could ever imagine.

  469. We are a movement that does whatever it takes.

  470. We are a movement that flips the table.

  471. Will you pray with me?

  472. God, we love you.

  473. And we thank you.

  474. We thank you for Jesus.

  475. God, that he didn't come for power or influence or prestige.

  476. He came to save us.

  477. We thank you for day two of Wonder Week, one step closer to Easter, one step closer to the moment that changed everything.

  478. God, I pray that we would not be so busy trying to do something miraculous that we miss the exponential power of speaking your truth to the very mundane aspects of our life.

  479. God, I pray we would not waste one more second trying to protect your glory and your holiness, but instead, we would show the world your glory.

  480. We would show the world your power by reaching out to those who have been left without anyone else to care for them.

  481. And God, that was me.

  482. And God, I know that was many people in this room.

  483. You reached us and you saved us.

  484. Help us to prophesy, to speak that truth, and reach many more.

  485. We love you.

  486. And we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  487. Amen.
