I'm the pastor here at MetaChurch.

And my hope is that today's podcast finds you at the perfect time in your life that God uses it to inspire and enlighten you.

Today is a special day.

We've been teasing it online uh all weekend long.

Pastor Noel and Ryan have talked about it.

We have today what I believe is the biggest announcement in the history of MetaCurch.

Who is ready to hear a big announcement?

Yes.

Well, we will do that right after this sermon.

So we have to wait a little bit, a little bit longer.

Uh we have been in a conversation about what we believe and why we believe it here at MetaCurch.

And today, to continue that conversation, my message is titled See to It.

See to it.

Would you pray with me?

Father, we love you, and I thank you for an opportunity to really dive into what is at the core of our beliefs.

I thank you for a place like MetaCurch where all people from all backgrounds, all different walks and parts of their spiritual journey can all come together and wrestle with life's biggest questions.

I thank you for the people who are in the room that are seasoned believers, have been following you for years, some for decades.

God, and I equally thank you for the skeptics in the room, not sure what they believe, but humble enough to come to seek you.

And God, you've said in your word, if we seek you, we will find you.

And so I ask that we would have open hearts and open minds today.

And we give this time to you and we ask it all in Jesus' name.

And everyone said, Amen.

There's a common uh statement in our culture, it goes like this I will see to it.

And this is a statement of future aspirational confidence.

This is when you're saying, I will make sure that it happens.

I'll see to it.

I'll make sure that it takes place.

I will personally get it across the finish line.

Katie and I usually stay in whatever hotel we can find on hotels.com, but sometimes, like on an anniversary, we'll stay in a nice hotel.

And I feel like this is the way they talk.

You say, hey man, is uh is there any way that we could, you know, get breakfast a little bit earlier?

And what they say is, I'll personally see to it.

They're gonna make sure that that thing happens.

We live in a culture that prioritizes your pursuit of happiness above all other things.

And and what what culture teaches you over time is it is up to you to ensure that you have what you need to be happy, successful, and significant in life.

In other words, you have to take on an I'll see to it mentality.

And this is how most of us live.

We seek to take control of our lives and we say, I'll see to it that I make the money that I need to make, I'll see to it that I work hard enough to get this promotion, I'll see to it that the relationship works out, that I find the right person, and that they marry me, whether they really want to or not.

I'll see to it personally, and we have all these big dreams and aspirations for our future.

It's easy to see this when we first have a kid, and some of you have young kids, like babies and toddlers, and man, when you first hold that kid, you are like, I will personally see to it that this kid has the perfect life.

I'll see to it that they only eat the finest foods and raw vegetables.

I will see to it that I hand pick their play dates, no bad influences on this kid.

I will see to it that they are at the top of their class, that they go to the right schools, I will see to it that they are on the most elite, select sporting teams.

I will see to it that they go to the right college, end up in the right career, I'll see to it that they marry the right person who thinks the right way, approved by all the other important members of the family.

I'll see to it that they grow up to think like me and act like me and dress like me and vote like me.

It is really wonderful to think about that when you have your two-year-old.

I'm just letting you know a secret.

By 12 years old, I'll see to it turns into Jesus, please get me through it.

Like perfect meals and vegetables turns into Pop Tarts for breakfast, and spoiler alert, Pop Tarts for dinner.

It's like just survival mode, and we see it with our kids.

If your kids are old enough, you've begun to experience it.

But it's also in every other aspect of our life.

We lay out these plans.

I'll see to it that I'm a millionaire by 35.

I'll see to it that I have the perfect marriage with the most smoking hot wife.

I'll see to it that I don't repeat the mistakes that my family line has tended to make.

I'll see to it that this marriage lasts even though my parents didn't.

I'll see to it.

And you live long enough, and you begin to realize that most of our life actually operates outside of our control, and we think that we can see to it and end up being in charge of our own happiness, our own success, and our own significant significance.

But you live long enough and you will learn that so many of your I'll see to it turn into just get me through it.

And then you're stuck.

Wondering if the dreams that you had will be traded in for a life settling into the status quo.

Wondering if a life that once seemed so promising will just play out pretty painfully.

Today we're looking at one of the most important stories in scripture.

It really is a perfect lesson in so many ways.

It's about a guy named Abraham.

He's a key figure in scripture because he is both the father of the nation of Israel.

He was called out by God to start a nation.

He would have the children who had the children, who had the children that generations later would make up an entire nation known as the nation of Israel.

And in the Old Testament, Israel was God's vehicle for his plan of redemption.

That's why Abraham is not just the father of the nation, he's also the father of our faith, because through his lineage would one day come Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, to bring salvation to all people in all places.

It is a monumental task, but there was one problem.

God gave that vision to Abraham, and then time went by, and not a little bit of time, not months, not years, but decades went by, and Abraham had not yet had one son.

He had no kids, and you know, I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but if you want to have a great lineage, at some point you have to start with at least one kid of your own.

And so he waited and waited and waited.

And he waited and waited.

And finally, when he was near 100 years old, God blessed Abraham with a son.

One son, his one and only son, who he loved as dear as life itself.

His son was named Isaac.

And we love that part of the story because we love answered prayers and we love when things go according to our plans.

And he had to wait a little while, but now he has a son, and because he has a son, Abraham can see to it.

He can see to it that he is protected and taken care of, that he grows up in the right way, that he becomes a good, wise, godly man who is ready to take on as the head of what would one day, God promised, be a great nation.

The nation that would one day save all other nations.

But to have such a significant position required someone with significant faith, and God was not done testing Abraham's faith.

In Genesis 22, verse 1, it says, After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham, here I am, he answered.

Genesis 22:1

In verse 2, take your son, God said, your only son, Isaac, your only son whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will tell you about.

And can you imagine more devastating news?

After all of these years, all of the ups and downs, all the disappointments, to finally have a son, finally have the ability to see to it that your promise actually comes through, and God asks him to give it up.

There is nothing, there is nothing that Abraham wouldn't do to get out of this situation.

He would rather give up anything, even his own life, but that is not what God asked of him.

God asked for his son.

And Abraham is known as the father of our faith, and he really shows why in his next movements.

He gets up the next morning, he gets himself ready, he prepares his men, he prepares the animals, he gets the wood and the fire, and he gets his son Isaac, his only son, his son whom he loves, and he heads towards the mountains.

And whether you're a parent or not, the question on all of our minds is how?

How could he possibly have the faith to continue walking towards the mountain when he knew what was required from him at the top of that mountain when he knew what God was asking him to sacrifice?

In verse 6, it says, Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and he laid it on his son Isaac.

And in his hand he took the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together.

And then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, My father, and he replied, Here I am, my son.

And Isaac asked the most heart-wrenching question imaginable.

The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?

Isaac is old enough to realize that something is missing from their normal routine of going and making sacrifices.

And at this point in the Old Testament of the Bible, the sacrifice of the firstborn, unblemished, spotless male lamb was the most important and significant spiritual rhythm that they were in.

He knew the deal.

You wake up early, you load everything up, you pack a snack, you get the wood, you get the fire, and you get the lamb.

He's a good boy, he's respectful, he doesn't want to call his dad out.

Abraham's getting a little up there in age.

You know, you can forget a lot of things to make a sacrifice.

You can't forget the lamb.

Dad, where is the lamb?

And it had to be the ultimate gut punch for Abraham.

And I find it necessary to point this out when we get to these stories of great men and women in scripture.

We saw this a lot if you were here for the heroic series.

What Christian culture likes to do is they like to take these very real human beings that God used to change the world and turn them into these unattainable superheroes.

They take all of the humanity out of the men and women that God used.

And so we paint pictures of Abraham ascending the mountain with Isaac, and he is stoic, stone faced, unflappable in the face of the ultimate test.

And I just don't buy it.

I've read the 21 chapters that come before this.

You get a pretty clear picture of who Abraham is.

He waited his whole life, decades and decades, to have the sun.

He loves the sun more than life itself.

Every step that Abraham took towards that mountain, he began to tear apart at the seams more and more.

His heart was being shattered by the thought of giving up his only son, and then that son whom he loves says, Dad.

Where is the lamb?

How do you have the faith as a parent to keep on walking?

And I think we find the answer in verse 8.

Abraham answered, God himself will provide.

God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.

And then the two of them walked on together.

This one line underscores exactly why Abraham was chosen as the father of our faith and exactly how he was able to keep walking on in the face of an impossible task.

He said, the Lord Himself will provide.

And it is translated provide, but the root definition for the word gyra is not provide.

The root definition is actually to be seen.

And so the actual answer that Abraham gives, that's so significant, when Isaac says, Where is the lamb for offering?

Abraham answers and says, The Lord sees us.

The Lord sees exactly what is going on.

And that means so much more than it means if I were to say, I see you on a human level.

Because God sees all of the way down to the very core of our being.

He means it in a fully manifest way.

Where is the Lamb?

God sees us.

He sees us and sees our need for an offering.

He sees us and sees your confusion, my son.

He sees us and he sees my heart breaking inside of itself.

He sees the fullness of our situation and the first step to persevering.

The first step to having faith is to believe that God sees you.

If you know who God is and you can believe that God fully and completely sees you, you can have the faith and the strength to keep walking in the face of immense adversity.

God does see you.

He sees you in your marriage that is barely hanging on by a thread.

He sees you as you wonder how you are gonna make it from this paycheck to the next one.

He sees your confusion.

He sees the rage that wells up inside of you at unexpected times.

God sees you more thoroughly and more completely than you are even capable of seeing yourself.

He sees your potential, he sees the purpose that he has placed inside of you, he sees the future that he has laid out for you, and he sees the ways that he plans to unleash your life on the world around you.

God sees you.

And Isaac asks, Where is the lamb?

And Abraham doesn't know.

There's a lot that he doesn't know.

He doesn't know where the sacrifice will come from.

He doesn't know if there's any way for him and Isaac to make it off the mountain together.

He doesn't know how he's going to go home and explain what he did to his wife, nevertheless, how he will live with himself for taking the life of his own son.

Abraham doesn't know.

But he knows that God sees him.

Jirah.

And if God sees him, that is enough for Abraham to keep walking.

Finally, they made it to the top of the mountain.

It says in verse 9.

When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and he bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.

And then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.

And this is the moment where dreams die.

And this is the moment that maybe you've heard called rock bottom.

And if you live long enough, you will get to some of these moments in your life, the moments where you don't know how you're going to move on.

These are the phone calls where you find out it's inoperable.

These are when you're handed the slip and released from your job.

This is the moment where you have to put pen to paper and sign the divorce agreement that you never asked for.

These are the calls from your children to let you know as adults they'll no longer be speaking to you.

These are the moments where life makes it clear to us.

You cannot see to it.

It is simply out of your control.

And as hard as you have worked to try and attain happiness through controlling all of the aspects of your life, the more you are plunged into the depths of misery and depression that are waiting for you on the other side.

This is the moment where Abraham is put through the ultimate test.

Put through the fire, and this is the moment where Abraham has the faith to raise the knife.

He's willing to follow God even if it costs him everything.

He's willing to believe in God, even when what he's asked for makes no sense.

And maybe you're familiar with this story, you know the outcome.

And maybe you don't know the story, but you know enough about God's character that you're pretty sure this dad isn't about to kill this son.

And you'd be right.

In verse 11, the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham, and he replied, Here I am.

And he said, Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.

Now I know, since you have not withheld the most important thing in your life from me.

And if we took an honest inventory of our life, we all have a hierarchy of the things that we value, which means you have something that is the most important thing to you.

And culture convinces us that life is about seeing to it ourselves, that we hold on to those things and leverage those things for our own success and happiness.

And the heavenly equation is exactly the opposite.

God says that you have a purpose, you have potential, you were created to live a significant life.

He's placed gifts and talents inside of you, and the way that you maximize those and unlock those to reach your potential is to take the things that are most important to you.

Open your hands, lay them on the altar and sacrifice them to God.

Are you willing and are you able to take what is most important to you?

That thing that keeps you up frequently at night, those worries that weigh you down on your shoulders day after day after day.

Are you willing to take the things that you believe it is most important for you to control and release control?

Trusting that God Jyra, He sees you, and if God sees you, He will provide not always what you want, but always, and I mean always what you need.

You see, it's a perfect lesson because, in one sense, we are called to be Abraham.

Abraham had the most significant promise, one of the most significant callings in all of scripture, the father of the nation and the father of our faith.

It's a significant calling.

But as soon as he was given something that he had some degree of control over, something that he could see to it, he was asked to give it right back.

We are called to be Abraham and to take the things we have in our hands and the things that we want to control so badly, and all of the ways that we want to ensure our own success and open our hands and give it to God, trusting him with it.

It's a perfect blessing.

Because we are called to be Abraham, and at the same time, we are all Isaac.

In verse 13, it says, Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns.

And so Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of, in substitute of his son.

We are called to live like Abraham, but the truth is you are Isaac.

You are bound, you are on the altar, the knife has been raised.

The truth is you are dying.

And what we do at MetaCurch is we preach the gospel.

That means the good news of Jesus.

And before you can understand the good news, you must understand the reality.

And the reality is we are all dying.

And of course, we are holding tightly and trying to see to it that we maneuver this world and make some sense of it because we don't even know how to solve the biggest problem we all have in life, which is that every single person is inching their way towards their inevitable death.

It is the most universal truth.

It is the one thing all people share in common.

All people die.

We don't think about it consciously a lot.

But the fact of our impending death motivates our life more than any given factor.

We are on The altar, the knife is raised, we are out of options, we are Isaac.

And if we do not have an answer, then not only will we die now, but we will have no answer for what comes after our death.

And Isaac's life was spared and was substituted by a ram caught in the thicket.

God provided.

He provided perfectly, just like he always does.

And humanity is incapable of working our way to God.

We do not have a solution to our biggest problem of death.

And so when the world was at its darkest, the world looked to the heavens and asked, Father, where is the lamb?

Where is the offering?

Where is the sacrifice that could once and for all give us the solution to life's biggest problem?

And at the exact right moment, God sent his son, his one son, his only son, his son whom he loved.

Jesus came to earth and was announced this way.

In John chapter 1, it says, the next day John saw Jesus and said, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

Abraham was never gonna kill his son.

And I get it, it is an extreme test, but it was a foreshadowing of the most extreme sacrifice.

And when Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, came to earth to substitute his life for ours, God went through with the very sacrifice that he did not ask Abraham to go through with.

If you do not know Jesus, then your life is on the line.

And we are called to live like Abraham, to open our hands, to let go of the things we most want to control, trusting that God can do more with what he's placed inside of us than we could ever hope to do ourselves.

Abraham celebrated this miracle in a very significant way.

In verse 14, it says, Abraham named that place.

The Lord will provide, provide the same word, Jira.

But now he has made it an official name of God by putting directly before it the name Jehovah.

Jehovah Jira, the Lord will provide.

But we know something today that the word Jyra doesn't just mean provide, it means the Lord who sees us.

This is a powerful promise.

Because how do we have the faith to continue walking towards the mountain?

How do we have the faith to continue getting up day after day and trying to live this Christian life?

How do we have the faith to wake up in a loveless marriage and try our best to love our spouse?

How do we have the faith to keep walking and keep setting boundaries and keep loving our children?

How do we have the faith to keep going to the meetings and keep trying to kick that addiction?

How do we have the faith to continue walking amongst impossible odds?

We believe that there is a God who sees us and we believe that that God is good.

Not just Jyrah, not just a God who can see you, but Jehovah Jyrah, the God who sees you and who loves you.

And if you can believe that, you can quit living your life trying to see to it and see to it and see to it till you finally hit rock bottom and realize that you just need someone to help you get through it.

Jehovah Jirah, here is a promise.

God doesn't just see it, God will always see to it.

God will fight your battles.

God has already won your victories in a future that you do not exist yet in.

God is ahead of you, He is behind you, He is inside of you, He is working for your good, He has plans and a purpose for you, He will make a way, and God sees you and will provide not always what you want, but I promise if you open your hands and you lay it down, He will provide exactly what you need.

God doesn't just see it, God always sees to it.

We've learned this in a powerful way in the last month or so, and really over about the last four years.

Four years ago, it became apparent that as this movement called MetaCurch, if we were really gonna meet our potential, we were going to need to start trying to find a permanent space, somewhere where we can meet more than just Sunday morning, somewhere where we can operate more of our programs and classes that have helped so many people, somewhere where we can run programs for the community and bring them in, meet people where they are.

And here's what I knew: God sees us.

He sees our heart, he sees our intention, he sees that we don't actually even care about a building.

All we care about is taking this city for Jesus Christ.

And because I knew He saw us, I just knew we'd walk down the road, we'd find a building, probably six months to a year, we would buy it, move in, it would be no problem.

Four years later, we were no closer than the day we started.

It has been a very difficult road.

We've been fundraising for this space for three years, and some of you know that because you've been giving this whole time.

I don't have to tell you.

You know we've been fundraising for a while.

We spent about nine months preparing for a capital campaign.

Y'all, we had this thing ironed out.

We started it March 1st, 2020.

Nine days before the world was shut down by COVID-19.

The timing could not have seemed worse.

At that point, we've now all been living through some of the most difficult days that our country and our world has ever lived through.

Tragedy after tragedy.

And week after week, I get up on stage with no updates to give you.

We've been working, most of you know, on a Kmart building that put a lot of time, energy, a lot of money into it.

A lot of prayers.

We have been working behind the scenes tirelessly.

And every month that went by with no progress and nothing budging, it was just like more weight and more weight.

And somewhere along the way, at the core of myself, as the leader, I started to get a see-to-it mentality.

Like, if I can't get this thing across the finish line, what does that mean for my leadership?

And the weight grew and grew.

And about halfway through this year, the Kmart stalled in a way where it seemed all but over.

And it made me come face to face with the reality that I had a see-to-it mentality that somewhere, and I know it, like up here, I know it's not real, but somewhere deep, I believed that if it failed, I failed.

And what happens when we think we have to see to it is we set an expectation for ourselves.

It's a false expectation, and inevitably we don't reach it, and all of a sudden we begin to question even who we are at the deepest level.

Now the building had, for all intents and purposes, failed.

And I had to go through a process of realizing what I preach every week that God is good and God's purpose for our life and for our movement have never hinged on anything we are able to accomplish.

I had to get in front of my staff and repent to them for some of the ways I had thought about the building.

I had to open my hands and take what within the context of the last few years has been one of the most important projects.

And I had to lay it down.

And I didn't know what would come next.

I thought it might just be over.

We decided as a staff and we searched our hearts and said honestly, if there is no movement, and if we are in this bar for the next 20 years, we are okay.

And furthermore, we can thank God for a place where people can come and have their lives change.

And we meant that.

And here's what we said from the beginning.

If God presents us with a door, we will knock.

We will not walk away, and we will not kick it down.

We will not have such little faith, and we will not try to see to it ourselves.

We will knock on the door and give God room to operate.

We had some incredible help.

We negotiated the price down to a price that, to be honest, was still way too high.

I just didn't think we could get there.

It was$4.3 million.

And so we got under contract and we had 90 days of feasibility.

That means we had 90 days to come up with 4.3 million dollars to purchase this building.

And so we went to work.

And we went to the bank, we banked with Frostbank, and very quickly they approved us for a loan.

75% of the purchase price.

This thing was humming along.

We had just over a million dollars to make up at this point.

And so now we were in the game.

All of a sudden, we start getting connected to the biggest foundations in San Antonio.

We are getting to the table, having conversations with people who could write us a check for the full price of the building, and they love what we're talking about, and they love what's going on at MetaCurch.

There was a point in the process, I'm not kidding, I had this thought, we're gonna have too much money.

You know, like I don't even know what that means, but this is just going so well, and we got halfway through feasibility, 45 days in, and it just felt like we were in such a good place.

Fifteen days later, none of the money had come in.

15 days after that, most of the donors had dropped out.

On day 89, we were$450,000 short.

Almost half a million dollars short.

On that Wednesday night, on the 89th day, Katie and I went for a walk.

We we walk around our neighborhood in the evenings a lot, and we were talking about the reality of the situation.

And the reality was this without a miracle, it's over.

And we were open to a miracle.

We were praying for a miracle, but we knew$450,000 without a miracle.

Man, we fought, we did everything we could do, but it's probably over.

Something was different, it was over, and we were okay.

And more than likely the project had failed, but we didn't feel like we had failed.

We knew God sees us.

And I try to tell you every week, MetaCurch, because what I see in you, and the church is made up of you.

You are this movement.

And I know we have a lot of insecurities and we have to fight through a lot of false narratives, but you are an unbelievably powerful movement of people.

You only know a fraction of how God wants to use your life to impact this city and beyond.

We know God sees us, and when the time is right, his time, he will give us what we need to take over this city for Jesus.

So we rested on that.

On day 90, we were, you guessed it,$450,000.

Sure, I had put$10 into it, so it was really$449.

We'd given everything we could give, we'd put everything we could towards it.

At a certain point, I had our attorney write up a termination of contract.

We had to send it in, or else we'd lose$50,000 in earnest money.

We sent it in that morning, we said, man, we fought hard.

It's over.

We went to lunch, we decompressed, we talked about the future, we talked about the present.

We actually kind of got excited, you know.

Thought of some new initiatives here in the bar.

Got settled into the new reality.

After lunch, we went to coffee, and in the middle of coffee, our broker started blowing my phone up.

Are you seeing this?

Please call me.

Call me as soon as you can.

I said, we gotta go.

You gotta drive.

We got back in the van.

I called him and he said, This is crazy, but the owner of the building is calling for a meeting.

I was like, what does that even mean?

He said, He wants to see if there's any way we can work this out.

I said, I would love that.

We can get crazy creative.

I just need him to know it's not like he can take 50 grand off and that's gonna do the trick.

We're$450,000 short.

Just want to make sure he knows that.

So that's fine, he knows.

We extended feasibility.

It was a Thursday, and we set up a meeting on a Monday.

All of a sudden, we were back in the game.

And the craziest part is I've been so concerned about us knocking doors down.

I never thought we would get to the point where we would try to shut the door, and God would say, Bro, let me be in charge of the doors.

He opened it back up.

We spent the weekend collaborating and brainstorming.

We came up with an idea that our banker and our broker said, in pretty plain terms, is kind of stupid.

Not a great idea, but it's what we had.

So we sat down on Monday, and here was our pitch.

This is a very metachurch pitch.

We said, look, we ended up$450,000 short, and so we think that you, the building owner, should give us$450,000.

And it was almost a very short meeting.

And we said, let's hear us out.

They run bingo out of this building, you know, like B7, I-14, bingo, like regular bingo.

We said, if you will give us the$450, at closing, we'll hand it right back to you along with a bunch of other money.

And then we can figure out a way, now that we own the building, to lease it back to you for a period of time for you to recoup your profits.

They were interested.

We talked about how much it cost them to run the bingo hall and how long it would take for them to get their profits back.

We landed on an 18-month lease, five nights a week.

We get as MetaCurch all day Sunday, all day Tuesday, and every other day till 4 p.m.

We shook hands, and Thursday of this week, we bought this building.

How many of you have seen this building?

Just curious, it's very close to here.

This is uh, this is a beautiful, beautiful space.

Like when I think bingo hall, I think thick smoke, dim lights, low ceiling.

This was built as an investment property just four years ago.

It's 22,000 square feet.

It has a 12,000 square foot auditorium that when we fully renovate it someday will seat over a thousand people.

It has 5,000 square feet consisting of a full kitchen.

I'm talking about sparkling clean restrooms.

Can I get an amen for the clean restroom?

It has meeting flex space that for now will work as Medikids.

It also has 5,000 square feet that is completely unfinished.

Our first financial priority will be to build that out specifically for Medikids use where we never ever turn away another kid from our Medikids program.

Along with the building, we also bought the undeveloped lot next to it, which will be overflow parking so that we don't have as much of the parking disasters as we have here.
