Barrier to Entry: Five Year Anniversary Celebration with Pastor Clayton

Welcome to the MetaCurch Podcast.

My name's Clayton.

I'm the pastor here at MetaCurch.

And my hope is that today's podcast finds you at the perfect time in your life that God uses it to inspire and enlighten you.

I hope that you enjoy today's message.

Well, happy new year, and welcome to our five-year anniversary.

It is hard to believe that this movement started five years ago.

God has been doing so many amazing things through you guys.

And let me just get something.

We we know this, we talk about this all the time, but the church is not this building, and the church was not the 151 saloon, and the church is not the Sunday service, and the church is not the staff or pastors.

You are the church, you are the movement.

And for five years, you've been moving in incredible ways here in San Antonio.

We're so excited to see what God still has ahead of us.

We have weathered a lot of barriers, COVID lockdowns, uh political tension.

We've expanded our online ministry.

We bought this building, and in just five years, we have baptized 429 people here at MetaCurch.

Our very first weekend, five years ago, I preached a sermon called Do You Have the Stones?

It was about being bold and ambitious in the promises that God had put in front of us.

These past five years, that's exactly what you have done.

MetaCurch is your movement, and I fully believe it is just getting started.

If you were here last August, we spent five weeks in a series called MetaVision, where we shared the vision that God has placed on our hearts for our next five years of ministry.

Back in August, we talked about this very moment, our five-year anniversary, and how we felt like God had given us this big, bold organizational principle for our next five years, years six through ten.

And here's what we said about our next five years.

This is how we articulated it.

In the next five years, we will have a meta church venue within 20 minutes of every person in San Antonio.

A big, bold, audacious vision.

This is one of our venues for Sunday services and for the organization of the movement.

Our goal in the next five years, realistically, is to open somewhere between two to four additional spaces for people to come in so that everyone who feels like they don't have a church they can go to, or their background is too messed up, or they don't know how to dress the right way or talk the right way, or they've done a whole lot of sinning in their life, or they're too jacked up to find a church, can have a meta church location to walk into and realize that it was put there exactly for them.

That is the big vision that God has placed on our hearts, and I'm confident the Holy Spirit will move to make that happen.

We also believe we're going to see big steps taken rather quickly.

We plan to start by opening our second venue in Helotus this year.

The staff has been working hard behind the scenes to get our systems and structures ready for this.

In fact, we've been organizing for this since February of last year.

Let me remind you, the staff alone is not the church.

The staff alone is not the movement.

For us to see that all God has for us, it will take all of us meeting together and moving together.

I do believe that 2024 is gonna be a massive year for us at MetaCurch, but you better believe that the devil is on high alert.

We have officially made it on his radar.

You don't baptize over 400 people in five years and the enemies of God not start paying attention.

And so we should expect every obstacle, every roadblock, every distraction, and every detour to be thrown at us as we look to take over the city for Jesus Christ.

And that's why, starting today and for the next four weeks, we're gonna get ready in a series that I'm calling Barrier to Entry.

Barrier to Entry.

What we're gonna see in our personal lives as well as in our movement is how to knock down these barriers.

Will you pray with me?

Father, we thank you, thank you, thank you for what you've done in these first five years.

We're taking some time today to acknowledge it and celebrate it, and every bit of glory goes to you, Jesus.

And now as we turn our attention to what lies ahead and the work to do, as your people, the light of the world, and as the world around us seems to grow darker and darker, that you would prepare our hearts, and that we would see the barriers in our way and trust you to remove them for us.

I thank you so much for every single person who makes up this movement.

I thank you for what you're doing in their life, for the great purpose that you've placed inside of them.

And I pray we would discover and live that purpose out more and more each day.

We love you, and we pray these things in Jesus' name.

And if you're ready to remove some barriers to entry, say amen.

Amen.

There are all kinds of forces and circumstances that act as barriers to entry in our life.

Um, perhaps growing up, your family didn't really have the finances to put you in the best schools, the best tutors, the best training.

Maybe you were a great athlete, but your family just couldn't swing the personal training that other kids got.

You never had the money to play in the elite AAU leagues.

And so you always wonder, academically and athletically, what you might have been able to do and what you could have accomplished if finances wouldn't have been this massive barrier in your family.

Maybe you wonder about your education.

If you had just stuck in there and gotten that degree, where you'd be at in your career now.

Lack of education is a barrier to entry in many, many fields.

Maybe you have cultural barriers or family barriers that have created negative thought patterns, or you feel expectation from your family that you just feel like has held you back, and you really haven't been able to pursue certain dreams that you've had throughout the years.

For many people, you just need someone in your corner.

It's a barrier to entry, not knowing the right people or having the right mentors.

Even your own mind, your psychology can become a barrier to entry as you start giving in more and more to self-doubt and anxious thoughts that can even turn into self-loathing, hating your own self.

Maybe COVID set you back, or you haven't recovered from the divorce, or your addictions are a barrier to entry.

There are potential obstacles, even here in our movement.

And what we're gonna talk about over the next four years will be applicable to you in your personal life, but it will be specifically targeted to the barriers that we will face together as Metachurch.

We have had our fair share of barriers.

The last five years has been anything but simple, anything but easy.

Together we have navigated those things and we've continued trusting in God, but as more barriers come along, will we continue on that path?

There will be barriers in your personal life, there will be barriers for our movement here at MetaCurch.

Barriers to entry are real, so what do we do about them?

How do we position ourselves to allow God to work powerfully, not in spite of the barriers we encounter, but through them?

Starting next week, we are going to get super specific about how we can mitigate some of the barriers that I do know are ahead of us in the next five years.

I really need you here for these next three weeks.

I think these four first four weeks of 2024 are going to set the direction and determine how quickly we can move to achieve the vision that God has placed on our hearts.

But before we get to the specifics, we need a new broad perspective.

For today, we've got to get this principle in our hearts and in our minds.

And we're gonna do that by looking at one of the biggest, most obvious barriers to entry in all of Scripture.

We're gonna be in the Old Testament book of Joshua.

This is the sixth book in your Bible.

And Joshua is right after the story of Israel, God's chosen nation, wandering in the desert for 40 years.

You may know this story.

The nation of Israel was held captive as slaves in Egypt.

God, after hundreds of years, freed them and sent them to the promised land that He had given them.

He had guaranteed it was for them, but as soon as they got right on the precipice of the promised land, they lost faith.

They had everything they needed.

God had promised them victory, but they got scared.

The barrier to entry was a lack of faith.

And because they did not enter the promised land, they had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years.

Right before the book of Joshua, Moses, the fearless leader of Israel, dies.

And now Joshua has assumed command of the nation.

They cross over the Jordan River.

They're officially in the very beginning stages of the promised land, but standing before them is Jericho, the huge fortified walls of this city, housing the military inside.

Jericho was impenetrable, it was intimidating.

Jericho was the first task to clear the way to ownership of the promised land.

And Joshua could not afford a loss.

He has just taken leadership.

This is his first big test.

He cannot mess this up.

And the barrier of all barriers stands in front of him.

It was literally, physically, a barrier to entry to the promised land.

That's a lot to manage.

When you read the book of Joshua, you see over and over again God telling Joshua, be strong and be courageous, be strong and be courageous.

And you've heard those verses prophesied over your life as well.

Be strong and be courageous.

Have faith.

Be bold, be audacious, live out your purpose, don't let anything hold you back.

But practically, when we come face to face with these barriers to entry that we all come up against in our life, it's easy to start to worry.

We're gonna pick the story up in Joshua chapter 5, and Joshua has kind of wandered away from camp, and Jericho is in his sights.

And he's worried.

You would be too.

And then he has a miraculous encounter that shifts his perspective.

In Joshua 5 13, it says, When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and he saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand.

And so Joshua approached him and asked, Are you for us?

Are you for our enemies?

Now the answer he's gonna get is not the answer that you're looking for.

The answer he gets is neither.

Are you for us?

Are you for them?

Neither, he replied.

And then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in worship and asked him, What does my Lord want to say to his servant?

It's a new perspective.

And notice, God hasn't even laid out the battle plan yet.

The plan's gonna come later.

Before he gets the plan, he needs a new perspective.

Over the next three Sundays, we're gonna get pretty practical about the plan to open Helotus and to start walking through this vision, what God has called us to, to go with the gospel to the ends of the earth.

We're gonna get very practical over the next three weeks, but before we get the plan, we have to get the perspective.

Who are you for?

Whose side are you on?

What business do you have here?

Are you for us?

Are you for them?

Neither.

You see, God has already promised Joshua that he would be with him in the exact same way that he was with Moses.

Joshua had no need to worry, and yet he's outside the camp looking at Jericho, looking at his obstacle, looking at his barrier to entry.

He's worried.

And what does the angel do?

He moves him from a state of worry to a state of worship.

And the next verse, the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

And Joshua did just that.

Joshua is not worrying anymore because now he's worshiping.

And you need to know this: worry and worship cannot coexist in the same space.

Worry and worship cannot take up residence in your heart at the same time.

Worry and worship are mutually exclusive positions for your life.

They're mutually exclusive perspectives for your mind.

Worship destroys worry.

And God is saying, I've already promised it to you.

You know why y'all had to wonder for 40 years?

Worry.

The first time they got to the promised land, they sent 12 spies in, and the spies went into land.

And they saw everyone and they were like, They're huge.

They're like giants in here.

You see, worry and worship can't coexist, so when you choose to worship, you do death to worry.

But at the same time, when you choose to worry, you do death to worship.

And people will really start looking like giants as you forget that the person on your side is the God who spoke creation into existence.

That He's already given you the promise.

You get so worried about a few six-footers in there.

And I get it.

I grew up playing basketball.

I was worried about the six-footers, you know.

I look tall on stage, but I promise you, 5'11 and three-quarters, right?

Six-footers were worrisome.

God's like, you don't remember walking through the sea?

You don't remember ten plagues that freed you?

You don't remember manna from heaven feeding you every day?

You don't remember the miracles that have come before.

This is what worry will do.

And we have run into so many obstacles in the last five years.

You may not ever know what it's like for three years to preach your heart out and pray your heart out for a building that falls apart.

Some of you were there through that whole journey praying your heart out for a Kmart three miles from here that we just knew God was gonna give us.

It all fell apart.

It seemed like a setback that I didn't know if we could get back from.

And worry and worship cannot coexist.

And fortunately, in the leadership of this church, there are people around me saying, just keep moving, just keep worshiping, just keep trusting, keep your faith in God.

Fortunately, I have a God-fearing wife going on walks with me at night, talking me off the ledge, just keep the faith.

God has us.

He didn't start this for it to fail.

Because if I stopped worshiping and I kept worrying, I wouldn't log on to loopnet.com and find this building almost the next day after the other building fell apart.

Our barriers to entry come in all shapes and sizes.

Today, Joshua was dealing with a giant fortressed city, killers on the inside.

Later in his leadership, he would be dealing with the lack of faith in the hearts of his people.

Whether your barriers to entry are physical, financial, relational, psychological, cultural, whatever your barrier that you find yourself up against happens to be.

The first question is can I trust God when I face my barriers?

Whatever the obstacle is, can I actually trust God?

Trust him enough to keep worshiping and keep moving and keep believing and keep dreaming big dreams.

Do I lose faith in the promises that he's given me?

Do I question his vision for my life?

How will we handle setbacks in our personal journeys?

How will we handle setbacks in our movement?

You don't have big, giant, audacious, ambitious dreams as a part of the movement of Jesus without landing yourself on the devil's radar.

Whatever he can throw at us, he will throw at us.

But our God is already bigger and already in our future and already breaking down barriers as long as we keep our faith in him.

Joshua is like, hey man, are you on my side?

Are you on their side?

And the angel's like, wrong question, Jackie.

The question is, are you on God's side?

You see, this happens a lot when the big obstacles come in our life.

We're very quick to look to God and be like, are you even like on my kingdom?

Like, do you do you actively hate me right now?

Like what?

I'm trying, I've been to church.

Like I'm like 40% of the time I'm at church.

You don't like, you don't see that?

If you want to ensure that God is fighting alongside you, then you have to change your perspective from trying to get God in your battles to trying to get yourself in his.

If you organize your life to fight God's battles, if you organize your life to fight to build his kingdom, if you organize your life to join with Jesus in the rescue and redemption of the earth, you can be guaranteed you will be fighting alongside God.

Wrong question.

I am a commander of the Lord's army.

Are you ready to stop worrying and start worshiping?

Take off your shoes, son.

This is holy ground.

God is already moving while your barriers are standing still.

God is already fighting in your future while you are busy, hung up on your past mistakes.

The God who goes before us ensures us the victory.

The obstacles to that victory are only effective when we lose heart.

If you are leaving God out of your problems in 2024, then your problems will eventually lead you away from God.

The obstacles that you face to keep you from a life of purpose and impact and fulfillment, if you are leaving God out of your problems in 2024, then those very problems will lead you away from God.

We cannot take one more step into this new year without shifting our perspective and running to God with the barriers that are in our life.

No more doing it alone.

The building that you're sitting in, God gave this to us.

We could not have done it without Him.

And the vision for the next five years, it cannot and will not happen without God leading the way.

God, are you for us?

Are you against us?

Wrong question.

Are we for God?

Are we organizing our life to build his kingdom?

Are we living to make his name famous?

Are we living for his influence and power?

Are we trying to get him to live for ours?

There will be barriers, there will be obstacles.

But if you are fighting God's battles, then he has already secured the victory for you.

Joshua, you're not gonna do this alone.

But you better have faith.

Because the plan is gonna be a little strange.

Joshua 6, the Lord said to Joshua, look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its soldiers, over to you.

It's done.

It's done.

You've already won.

This is what you have to do.

March around the city with all the men of war circling the city one time and do this for six days.

And have seven priests carry seven rams' horn trumpets in front of the ark, but on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, and while the priests blow the trumpets.

And when there is a prolonged blast of the horn and you hear it sound, have all the troops give a mighty shout, and the city wall will collapse, and the troops will advance, and each man straight ahead.

I've studied quite a bit of history.

This is the only plan in all of history that looks like this, okay?

What kind of plan is this?

You see, God's been with them, and Israel is starting to see itself as warriors.

I mean, if you read the battles that precede this, they pretty much go like this.

Israel shows up, knocks on the front door, God opens up a can, end of story.

Like that's how they're moving forward.

And now he wants them to move from warriors, which they finally caught this identity, warriors to walkers.

That's how my brain works.

Uh I can't help but try to picture myself in these scenarios.

And I'm not Joshua in a scenario.

At best, I'm like one of the captains, you know, and I'm in charge of a few men, and there's some people in charge of me.

And there's this thing about me where when I think something's dumb, I'm gonna say something.

I can't help myself, you know.

I just imagine Joshua, because he's gotta go tell the army this plan, gets to the end of his speech, and I'm like, I have a question.

Like, what?

So we're trying to make him busy or something?

Like, we're marathon runners now.

Like what?

I'm just going to my tent and updating my will right then and there, you know?

Like this plan.

Is crazy! And it's crazy on purpose because this is a physical obstacle, but God is going to show them a spiritual victory.

And the victory doesn't start with a plan, the victory starts with a perspective.

When there is a barrier to entry in your life, do you trust God?

When the plan makes no sense on paper, do you trust God?

When his call on your life is so ambitious that your internal narrative goes into overdrive, convincing you all the reasons that you can't actually live that out.

Do you trust God?

In verse 8, after Joshua had spoken to the troops, seven priests carrying seven trumpets before the Lord moved forward and blew the trumpets, and the Ark of the Lord's covenant followed them.

And while the trumpets were blowing, the armed men went in front of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard went behind the ark.

And Joshua had commanded the troops do not shout or let your voices be heard.

Don't let one word come out of your mouth until I say shout, and then you can shout.

And so the Ark of the Lord was carried around the city, circling at once, and they returned to camp and they spent the night there.

And that was day one of walking a half marathon together in complete silence, walking next to the wall.

On the other side of the wall are killers who want to murder you.

This isn't like a leisurely jot down the greenbelt.

The tension would have been so incredibly thick.

One day would have been exhausting.

And then you try to sleep that night knowing you got six more days ahead.

In verse 12, Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priest took the Ark of the Lord, and the seven priests carrying seven trumpets marched in front of the Ark of the Lord while the trumpets were blowing.

The armed men went in front of them, and the rear guard went behind the Ark of the Lord.

And on the second day, they marched around the city once and returned to camp, and they did this for six more days.

Can you imagine day four?

You've already done this three times, you're exhausted.

You know, even after I finish this, I've got three more ahead of me.

You're like dead in the center of this plan.

Day four is tough.

Day four is where you start losing hope.

Day one of a vision?

I'm like, let's go.

Start a new church, let's do it! We got this.

Day four is tough.

When a pandemic shuts down the whole world and you don't get to see your church for eight and a half months.

Day four is tough.

Leaving slavery in Egypt?

That's fun.

40 years in the wilderness?

Can you imagine year 20?

You're like, we're halfway through.

When you get in the middle is often when we start losing hope.

You know why?

Because your worship starts getting overwhelmed by your worry.

Day four of marching is tough.

Month two of marriage counseling is tough.

Day one, you're like, oh man, can you imagine a year from now, man, we're gonna have that marriage we always dreamed about.

Month two, when all the dirty laundry is all out on the floor.

Your sixth week of sobriety, you're nervous about your first meeting, for sure.

But it's exciting.

You're doing something.

Week six, it's New Year's.

Everyone's going drinking.

The day that only two people showed up to your life team, you laid out snacks for 12 people, only two people showed up.

When your little angel babies who love you so much and thought you were a hero hit puberty, day four is tough, right?

You get in the middle of something and you start losing hope.

What's the first thing that God said in the plan?

I've given it to you.

All of it.

It's all yours.

The barrier to entry wasn't the city of Jericho, it wasn't the walls.

The barrier was whether or not God's people had enough faith to just keep walking.

Day two, day three, day four, halfway there, day five, day six.

How many God-sized dreams have died?

Not because God didn't give you everything you need and place that purpose inside of you, not because there were gifts that the Holy Spirit was waiting to unlock, not because he didn't have people in your future to come alongside you.

How many God-sized dreams died?

Because we stop walking.

How many lives of purpose are never achieved?

Because we lose hope, start worrying, stop walking, and settle into the status quo of society.

We don't have to be perfect, we don't have to be the most educated, we don't have to be able to quote the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, we don't have to get everything right.

Metachurch, if we will just keep walking no matter what, trusting God and continuing to take one step after another, God has guaranteed the victory in our future.

Will you keep walking no matter what?

That is not a rhetorical question.

Will you keep walking no matter what?

You might know the story early on the seventh day.

They started at dawn and they marched around the city seven times in the same way.

That was the only day they marched around it seven times.

And after the seventh time, the priests blew the trumpets, and Joshua said to the troops, Shout, for the Lord has given you the city.

And so the troops shouted, and the trumpet sounded, and when they heard the blast of the trumpet, the troops gave a great shout, and the wall collapsed.

And the troops advanced into the city, each man straight ahead, and captured the city.

And of course they did.

God gave it to them before they even began.

God has a future for you, He's a plan.

He created you on purpose, He created you with purpose.

And the broadest part of all of our purpose is to believe in Jesus and build his movement.

Jesus came, he died a brutal death, resurrected, defeated death itself.

The last thing he says, it's like, here's why I did all of this.

So that you can go into all the earth and preach the gospel.

Build my movement.

Tell others, you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and even to the ends of the earth.

And then in church, we're a lot like the disciples that Jesus used to change the world 2,000 years ago.

You know, like none of us are like round one draft choices in the religion draft, you know?

It's like we all are very aware that we're jacked up.

We all have difficult stories, we're honest about it, we're not interested in playing the games of religion or wearing the masks, pretending like everything's okay when it's not.

It's exactly the kind of person that God can use to do miraculous things.

In this movement, over the next five years, we can see things beyond our imagination, just like we did in our first five years.

But how do we overcome our barriers to entry?

What Joshua in the city of Jericho showed us is that we have to trust God when it makes no sense, when things are at their darkest, when it feels impossible.

We must decide in our minds and our hearts with our will and volition, we will trust God, and we have to keep walking.

Even what we perceive as failures are actually forming us and pushing us toward the future when we just follow these two simple steps.

The things we see as setbacks, losing the building we thought we wanted.

The setbacks are actually setups for the vision that God has for your life.

If you will trust Him and you will just keep walking.

Here's what we'll see throughout this series.

What we see as a barrier to entry, God sees as a bridge to expansion.

God sees as an opportunity to build your faith.

God sees as an opportunity to get out of me some of the things that are holding me back, and to get into me the things that I need for my next season of ministry.

What we see as barriers, God sees as a bridge to get us to where he wants us to go.

He has called us to the ends of the earth.

What he asks us to do sometimes might not even make sense to us, and that's how his kingdom expands.

Seven days of marching around Jericho, three years of ministry in a saloon, two years of building during a pandemic, five years ahead of us fighting for a grand vision, Metachurch.

If you're ready to trust God and you're ready to keep walking, then God will be faithful to continue to expand our impact in ways that we simply cannot imagine.

I want you to know as we close that we're already moving toward the next step of our vision, which is opening our Holodus venue.

We've been organizing ourselves for almost a year now.

And you know, something happened when we finally closed on this building.

For years, I've been praying for God to just give us a space where we could operate out of and continue to grow.

And it's like the moment that God gave us that, my primary prayer for this movement changed.

And I started praying, God, send us the leaders that we need to push this movement forward.

And I've been shocked in the last two years as God has answered that prayer again and again and again.

And at this point, I think I see leadership and future in so many of you who come here that you might not even see for yourself yet.

Sometimes God takes a while to answer prayers.

We have to be long-suffering.

Other times God answers prayers so quickly that we almost miss what he's done.

God, send us the leaders.

Send us the leaders to grow this thing.

Because if you don't have leaders, that is another barrier to entry.

Send us the leaders.

We had our first service in this building, December 5th of 2021.

It wasn't grand opening yet.

That came in January 22.

We called it our soft open.

In our very first service in this building, December 5th, 2021, I met this amazing young couple, Tony and Tori Albano.

And I'm usually slow on the getup on these things.

That day I met them, I knew that God was beginning to answer that prayer.

He was sending a bold, significant, ambitious leader who could help move us forward in what God had for us.

And so we're taking real steps towards our future.

And uh, as of January 1st, our newest staff leader is Tony Albano.

Would you guys help me welcome Tony and his family to the stage?

Side note, so is Tori, and I'm guessing Sonny is as well, you know.

Uh he doesn't talk to me much yet, but um we we've hired Tony to manage two things.

I'm very confident that he can do both in the seasons ahead of us.

Number one, he's stepping into leadership of Meta Youth.

We're very excited about that, and God's given him a lot of vision, and I'm excited to see how God's gonna use him there.

And he also knows that we have hired him to take the lead in opening our Holodus venue as our Holotus venue pastor.

Yeah.

I am so, so thankful.

And so here's what we're gonna do to um close out this part of the message.

We're gonna do something we do hear a lot at MetaCurch, and it is ascending and just uh a recognition of God moving someone into a new season of ministry, and we do that by laying hands on them.

And um, what I want you guys to do, if you're comfortable, is just extend your hand forwards, symbolizing your agreement with this.

And I'm gonna pray over Tony and Tori and Sonny.

Would you pray with me?

Um, Jesus, I thank you for this young couple's just love for you, first and foremost.

They love you, Jesus.

They are organizing their lives around you.

You will be fighting battles alongside them because they have made the decision to fight to build your kingdom.

I thank you for bringing him on our staff.

I thank you for what's ahead of him.

I pray that you would unlock even new gifts, new dreams, new vision, that you would continue, like all of us, to sanctify him through your word, through the wisdom of those around him.

Father, we look forward to big things.

We believe in the big, audacious, ambitious vision that you've given us to take your message to the ends of the earth.

And Jesus, this is one more way we're organizing to do just that.

And so we love you.

And everyone who agrees with these words, say, Amen.

There are big things ahead of us.

I need you here the next three weeks, because the next three weeks we will be specifically targeting our biggest barrier to entry, and we'll be answering the question: why in the world is there a giant brick wall on stage?

So you can definitely all that out next Sunday.

I do want you to know there is no meta youth today.

That's our program for sixth through twelfth graders.

There's no meta youth, but I'm very excited for what's coming in the future of Meta Youth under Tony's leadership.

I'm so grateful that you guys were here today.

We love you, and I really hope to see you here next Sunday.
