Barrier to Entry: I've Got Five On It with Pastor Clayton

Welcome to the MetaCurch Podcast.

My name's Clayton.

I'm the pastor here at MetaChurch.

And my hope is that today's podcast finds you at the perfect time in your life that God uses it to inspire and enlighten you.

I hope that you enjoy today's message.

I'm sure you guys are well aware.

It's in the 30s right now, okay?

And you are San Antonians and you got out of your house to come to service today.

Heavenly extra credit for everyone in the room.

I'm so glad to see you here.

We're in week two of our barrier to entry series.

Last week we celebrated our fifth anniversary as a movement and all the incredible things that God has been doing.

We're focusing in this series on the vision that God laid out for us back in August of 2023.

It's rooted in Acts chapter 1, verse 8.

Acts 1:8

This is some of Jesus' last words to his followers.

He says, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

And man, this really inspired us because what it says is that the church movement is not supposed to stand still.

Our job as believers in Jesus and followers of Jesus is to take his message and to take his movement to the ends of the earth.

And we intend to do that very thing.

And we're gonna start right here in our city, in our own backyard, uh, where God has given us influence.

Here's how we're saying our our vision for the next five years.

So we've been around five years.

In the next five years, we will have a meta church venue within 20 minutes of every person in San Antonio.

And so this would be our Richland Hills venue.

We're hoping to have two to four more of these.

So we're within 20 minutes of everyone in town, and and I just hear from you guys story after story after story of how God met you uniquely at MetaCurch.

Many of you didn't believe that there was a church out there where you could fit in, where you could belong and be loved, because at the time you weren't even sure what you believed, and God met you here and you believed in Jesus, and your lives have been changed, and now it's our job to make a way for that to happen for as many people as possible.

So it's a big audacious vision, and we're gonna start as quickly as possible.

We plan to open our second location this year by opening our Holotus venue up and behind the scenes of the staff at MetaCurch, whose job it is just to organize things and empower you guys.

And we have been working since last February to get our systems and structures right, scalable, replicable, so we can start planting these new venues all over the place.

But, and you know this if you're a part of MetaCurch, the staff is not the church.

You are the church.

It's all of us.

You are the movement, which means if our vision is gonna happen, it will be because you decided to move.

2024 will be a huge year for us.

And just by the fact that we have a vision as big as we do, we are on the devil's radar.

He will throw every obstacle he can in our way, which is why, for the month of January to start the year off, we're in this series called Barrier to Entry.

Now, I need you to know that this series works on two levels.

Number one, you were created by God with an incredible purpose for your personal life.

And so all the passages we look at will speak to you on the personal level, because there are barriers and obstacles in your life personally.

It's also gonna speak to us on the level of movement.

And these things aren't actually disconnected because the movement is just the collection of all of our individual lives coming together for the same purpose.

Today we're going to get into a new topic, a new part of scripture.

My message today is I got five on it.

So thank you for half of the room that got that reference.

I really appreciate it.

I was gonna sing the title, I got scared, to be honest with you.

I got five on it.

John chapter six says this.

After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee, and a huge crowd was following him because they saw the signs that he was performing by healing the sick.

And Jesus went up a mountain and he sat down there with his disciples.

Now, the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near.

And so when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, Where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?

He asked this to test him, for Jesus knew what was going to happen.

And Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn't be enough for each of them to even have a little.

And one of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?

And Jesus said, Have the people sit down.

There was plenty of grass in that place.

So they sat down, and the men numbered about five thousand.

And Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated, so also with the fish as much as they wanted.

And when they were full, he told his disciples, Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted.

And so they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten.

Would you pray with me?

Jesus, we love you.

We thank you for your great love for us.

I thank you for a movement like Metachurch, who is trying desperately to prioritize your original intention for your movement, removing any barriers or obstacles that would keep people away from you, doing whatever it takes to get people to you, Jesus.

Today, you already know, Holy Spirit, we're gonna get about as real as it gets.

And so I pray that we would have grace and courage and clarity.

We ask it all in your name.

And if you're ready to go, say amen.

Amen.

Uh, you may have heard the story before.

Um, it's told actually in all the different gospels.

There are four gospels.

These are the historical accounts of the life of Jesus, and it's typically referred to as the feeding of the 5,000.

But if you were paying attention, what it said is the men numbered 5,000.

This was a hillside full of families, and people had pretty sizable families back in the day.

A conservative estimate is that there were about 20,000 people in total.

For reference, if you've ever been to a sold-out Spurs game, the Frostbank Arena holds just a little over 19,000 people.

This is a massive crowd of people, which created a massive-sized problem when everyone needed to eat and there was no food for them.

Let's get into our text.

So when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?

And there's two things that really stand out to me in this verse.

And the first is that he looks at Philip.

Now, if you've read the gospel, you might notice that Philip does not get a lot of screen time in this movie, okay?

Peter, James, and John, they kind of hog the camera most of the time.

They're out in front, and Philip's like one of the twelve.

But in this moment, out of all the disciples, Jesus looks at Philip.

And here's why.

We don't have a map in front of us, but if you look, and some of your physical Bibles have these maps, if you look at the story of when Jesus called Philip, you'll learn where he's from.

And if you look at where Jesus is at during this miracle, what you'll learn is it's right next to Philip's hometown.

He looks at Philip because Philip knows the area.

He's gonna be like Jesus' personal Yelp reviews for this event, you know, like we got a lot of people here.

And so, where will we find the bread?

The second thing that stands out is Jesus asks a where question.

He already knows it's gonna happen.

He just wants to know where the resources are going to come from.

And it's important to note that because when we see Philip's answer, he gets asked a where question, but he doesn't answer with a location.

As he continues, Philip answered him, 200 denari worth of bread wouldn't be enough for each person to even have a little.

You see, Jesus asked a where question, and Philip gave him a how answer.

And Philip's answer and the activity of the disciples throughout this entire miracle, it really shows that they had two key problems.

The first problem is that they were focused on the wrong thing.

See, Jesus was focused on the mission.

The people were hungry, and Jesus was going to feed them.

That was already a given.

He just wanted to know where the bread was gonna come from.

Philip isn't focused on mission, Philip is focused on math.

Philip goes back to the budget and is like, okay, we've got$17 and 20,000 carry, carry the three.

They gotta go home, right?

Like, there's just no way.

They gotta go home.

We can't do this, we cannot pull this off.

It's crazy because Philip and the disciples have watched Jesus do miracle after miracle after miracle.

He's focused on the wrong thing, he's not focused on the mission, he's focused on the math, and he's lost sight that he's standing with the God of the universe who has all the power and can do the miracles.

The second problem is that he was looking in the wrong place.

He was focused on the wrong thing, and he was looking in the wrong place.

You might not know this, but when you read the gospels, you also learn that Jesus and his disciples had outside donors.

Now, there were the majority of wealthy and elite people who did not like Jesus because Jesus was a threat to their power.

But there was a small number of people, some of them who were even wealthy, some of them who were pretty elite in society who did support Jesus and they monetarily supported him.

The disciples had a budget.

We know this in John's gospel, we learned that Judas was the treasurer.

Focused on the wrong things, and they're looking in the wrong place.

Where will they look to get the food?

You need to know this because I say it every week.

We believe you were created on purpose and you were created with purpose.

That God has placed you on this earth to do something significant.

That means somewhere at the core of who you are, there is a God-sized dream inside of you.

And because this purpose is of divine origin, it probably means that it doesn't make much sense with who you are or with what you have.

So for you to like fully step into your purpose, if it's gonna have to fit into your Excel spreadsheets, you're never gonna take the steps of faith necessary to begin to discover the purpose that you could be living.

If all of what God's called you to be has to fit into your agenda or your desires for your life, you might miss out on the actual destiny for your life that God created you with.

We do the same thing.

We focus on the wrong things.

Instead of mission, we focus on math or fear or selfishness or comparison.

And we start looking in the wrong places.

When we find that God's purpose might be untenable for our lives, we start trading it in for the purposes that the world offers us.

And the problem is the world can't really give you anything, it can only take away, which is why the further down the path you go, trying to live your life for the world around you, the emptier and emptier you become, focusing on the wrong things and looking in the wrong places.

In verse 8, one of the disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish.

But what are they for so many?

And whether you realize it or not, Andrew accidentally fixed one of our problems.

Now, he's still focused on the wrong things.

He found some food, and he doesn't think mission, he thinks math.

I found some food, I found like one lunch, but Jesus, we've got like a Laguna Madre number three and 20,000 hungry Hebrews.

I don't know.

Like this isn't enough.

He's not focused on mission, he's not focused on miracle, he's just focused on math, but he does accidentally solve our other problem.

He begins to look in the right direction.

Here's what he did.

Andrew looked in the crowd to feed the crowd.

Andrew will end up discovering that the solution was in the problem.

It's incredible, and he has half of this down.

But what he finds is not much.

He's pacing through 20,000 people going down the roads.

Anybody got some food?

Anybody got some food?

Anybody got some food?

And what's interesting is you look really deep, I mean really, really deep into the Greek in John's gospel.

When you when you actually get to the little boy, what he says is, I got five on it.

No, I'm making that up.

That didn't really happen.

I'm making that up.

I never lied, but I'm making that part up.

But what is interesting for real is John adds in this detail that nobody else does.

The other gospels don't add this detail.

He says there were five barley loaves.

That doesn't mean much to us.

But barley, the term for it, was bread for the beasts.

It was the lowest level of grain.

Bakers wouldn't even use it.

It was embarrassing to them.

The only people who made things with barley were shepherds to feed their sheep.

Which means, first of all, he's a kid, which 2,000 years ago meant that you were to be seen and not heard.

And he was a very, very poor kid.

He's impoverished.

No power, no influence, almost nothing to his name but five barley loaves, a couple of fish.

And he becomes the catalyst for a miracle of epic proportions.

You need to know this.

What God is going to call you into in the next season of your life, I'm here to encourage you.

You ready?

You probably don't have enough to fulfill it.

You probably are not skilled enough to pull it off.

I'm here to encourage you today.

You probably have too much pain to see it through.

You probably are going to fail.

You probably just have some barley loaves and 20,000 people to feed.

And what Jesus wants to know is if you trust him enough to take your knot and put it in his hands.

I'm not here to preach to you that you have everything you need and everything you desire.

And if you just dream it, then you'll achieve it.

And you can be whatever you can all be astronauts when you grow up, probably not, right?

I can't do geometry, I'm never gonna be an astronaut, okay?

What I'm here to tell you is if you truly have a God-sized dream, you probably don't have the resources to pull it off.

And that's exactly where God wants you, because to be the kind of person who can steward a God-sized dream once you step into it, you have to be able to trust him enough to put not enough in his hands, and if you trust him enough to give him not enough, then in the future you will have more than enough.

That's how God works, and yet we're so ashamed of how little we have.

Some of us would have kept our lunch under wraps because there's no way I'm letting anybody know that I'm in these streets eating barley bread.

Too embarrassed that we don't have enough, too embarrassed of the mistakes in our past, too embarrassed of all these things that we perceive as barriers to entry.

And the very thing that you are counting out might be the very thing that God is counting on that if you put it in his hands, he would use to do miracles in your life and have impact in your world.

Here's what happened: Jesus said, have the people sit down, and there was plenty of grass, so they all sat down.

The men alone numbered 5,000.

And Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated, and so also with the fish, as much as they want.

This is golden corral style.

You just eat till you're full, right?

As much as they wanted, and when they were full, he told his disciples, collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted.

And they collected twelve baskets full.

More than enough.

It's so significant.

You don't have enough education, enough talent, enough money, good looks, social charisma, enough experience.

You didn't have good parents, and now you're expected to be a good parent.

You have mistakes in your past, you have a felony that's just a ball and chain that you drag with you everywhere you go.

You have a divorce in your past that haunts all of your relationships moving forward.

You just see yourself as not having enough.

Barriers and barriers and barriers.

But if you can trust God with what you have today, then you will grow into what he has destined for you to be tomorrow.

If you can trust him with you're not enough, you will find that he and he alone is more than enough.

And here's what's amazing you get to that next stage of your journey.

And the only person who could possibly get the glory for it is Jesus Himself.

Jesus was teaching this to the crowd, and through scripture, he's teaching it to us.

But first and foremost, he was teaching it to his disciples.

They were focused on the wrong things and they were looking in the wrong places.

Uh, it's hard to believe that I've been working in church ministry for 17 years now.

I've been involved with countless ministries at this point.

I've seen almost everything imaginable behind the scenes.

So let me assure you, the struggle that the disciples had 2,000 years ago, focused on the wrong things, looking in the wrong places.

Um, that is a struggle that we still find ourselves in all the time today.

If you're newer with us here at MetaCurch, one thing that you're gonna learn about me quickly is uh I feel almost compelled to always be transparent with you guys.

I'm always gonna keep it 100, I'm always gonna let you, good, bad, or indifferent, you're gonna know what's going on, okay?

And the reason I feel compelled is actually deeply theological.

It is because you are the church, which means you are this movement.

The big vision to plant metachurch locations all over the city, it happens if you decide it happens.

Last week we saw at the highest level of perspective to break through our barriers to entry, we have to trust God no matter what, even when it doesn't make sense, even when it seems impossible, and we have to keep walking.

Step of faith by step of faith, step by step of faith.

It's at the big broad level.

Today we're gonna come down to the most practical level that there is.

Here we are, starting off 2024, and I want to let you guys know that we have, as I see it, one barrier to entry.

Now that might sound like a complaint, far from it.

I've been in ministry a while, and I believe that this movement has every single thing that we need to accomplish the vision that God has given us, and one barrier to entry.

And it is rare beyond rare that a church can say that.

Let me tell you what we have.

We have people.

That's you.

We are growing and we continue growing.

That's very rare in the world today.

Most churches are declining and dying.

We don't just have people, we have passionate people who are desperate to see what Jesus could do with their life, who are desperate to find out all that the Holy Spirit has for them.

We have people, and not just that, but passionate people, and we have missional clarity.

We know what we're about.

We do whatever it takes to get people to Jesus.

We know what this is right now.

This is a Sunday service.

The service isn't church, the building's not the church, the pastor's not the church.

You are the church, the movement of God's people.

We meet together so that we can move together, and we have a big vision.

And I have a big signed board that you sign, buying into that vision.

Passionate people with missional clarity, organized around a big vision.

There's nothing that could stop us.

So, can I tell you what our one barrier to entry is?

So, can I tell you what our one barrier to entry is?

Okay.

I don't think it's gonna surprise you.

The problem may not be surprising.

The solution, I think, borders on the miraculous.

Our one barrier to entry is our finances.

Let me make something very clear.

We have everything we need.

Uh when I get the chance to talk to other ministry leaders about meta church, you may not know this socially, I'm somewhat of an introverted person.

I just start glowing.

I mean, you guys have got it.

We've got it.

You could not trade me.

This isn't this isn't an exaggeration.

A literal billion dollars.

If I had to give up passionate people with missional clarity organized around a big vision.

That's what you have to have.

We do have financial barriers.

And so I have been transparent.

I've said this several times throughout the years.

I'm gonna say it in kind of a new way, because I want you to realize where we're at, truly.

I looked back at our two-year anniversary, the first week in January of 2021.

In January of 2021, since then, this is what I'm saying.

We have everything we need.

Our attendance, our movement has grown by over 150%.

We've doubled and a half.

People aren't seeing that.

You guys know this.

In five years, we've baptized 429 people.

Also, since January of 2021, while our attendance has grown by 150%, our annual budget has grown by less than 20%.

And I'm not saying 20% each year, 20% total from three years ago till today.

And so we are doing more than twice the ministry, or spread more than twice as thin when you account for inflation and cost of goods on basically the exact same dollar amount.

And so this is your movement, and you deserve to know that.

We have the people, we understand the mission, we caught hold of the vision, we have the passion, it's just money.

We have it.

The world has it, we spend it on all kinds of stuff.

It could end up being the barrier to entry on the vision God has given us.

It could.

In Jesus' name, I believe it will not.

And here's why.

I want us to think about what Jesus was trying to teach the disciples.

You're focused on the wrong thing and you're looking in the wrong places.

When Jesus asked them to feed the crowd, they immediately went to the money given by outside donors.

They went to math instead of mission, and they looked externally instead of internally.

So let me pull back the curtain and tell you how church funding works.

17 years in the game, lots of ministries I've been involved with.

Churches on average have somewhere between two and 10 people, depending on their size, who give virtually all of the money to any kind of expansion efforts.

The first church I worked in, we had one guy, he bought the land, he built the building, he bought the infrastructure, and every year he paid more than 50% of the annual budget.

A megachurch pastor in town once told a group that I was in, he had four guys, and anytime they had a project or a new building or anything, those four guys wrote the checks that completely paid for it, and then they allowed everyone else to give so that they kind of felt involved, you know.

Can I tell you, we have exactly and precisely zero of those people at MetaCurch.

Zero.

There's none of them.

If you're here, I'm unaware of you, okay?

Like, we don't have it like that.

And we don't need it.

It's fine.

Remember the catalyst for the miracle?

Andrew, he looked in the crowd to feed the crowd.

And here's what's so encouraging what he found in the crowd was terrible.

It was barley loaves and a couple of fish.

But it was a sacrifice.

And God can do miracles with people who are willing to give an ordinary sacrifice.

And I want to zoom in on this thought.

The disciples were thinking they would need an exponential gift to make this happen, but what Jesus shows us is that He can use our incremental gifts in exponential ways.

He can use an incremental sacrifice for exponential impact.

The resources for the crowd were in the crowd, and I believe the resources for our movement are in this movement.

In the next five years, we're gonna start two to four metachurch locations in this city, but it starts today.

And it starts with you.

It starts with being willing to take your barley loaves and your sardines and whatever else you might have and be willing to say, I'm in.

I I'm making up this statistic, but I'm probably right.

I think it's probably 0.001% of churches who can say what we say.

We have everything we need.

It's just money.

The people, the leaders, the knowledge, the passion, the clarity, we are set up.

Everything we need to feed the masses.

Now, this is the point in a normal sermon where the preacher tries to get you to uh refinance your home or sell one of your kidneys, right, so you can write like a$20 or$30,000 check and then we can go out for the glory of God.

I don't need that.

And I'm not in the business of asking you to do things you can't do.

Here is what I believe we need to see our vision through.

We must commit to incremental increase in our giving to allow God to bring exponential impact to our movement.

Incremental increase.

Five loaves and two fish.

As your leader, uh, I'm not hesitant to say clearly growing by more than double in our attendance and our giving staying flat is obviously not okay.

Our movement is just too important for that.

Your life and the purpose God has placed inside of you is too important for that.

So here's what we're gonna do about it.

Y'all know this if you've been here.

I like to make things visual.

I'm a bit of a visual learner, and so in preparation for this series, at the end of last year, I told the team I need a giant brick wall.

And they were all so excited to have to lug bricks all around this building and build a wall.

And when we started this morning before our first service, there were 800 bricks on stage.

Together, over the next three weeks, we are going to literally tear down this as a representative of our barrier to entry.

Here's how it works.

Every one of these bricks equates to an incremental increase in your giving of$50 per month.

$50 per month.

There's 800 bricks on stage.

Let me just put some numbers in front of you.

There are well over a thousand adults who call Metachurch their movement.

Now, y'all don't all come at the same time, but there are well over a thousand adults.

If 80% could give$50 a month, make room for$50 a month, we would tear down this entire barrier.

Let me be really practical and pragmatic, because that's what we're doing here.

We're getting as real as it gets right now.

We've crunched the numbers at some level, and we believe to open a new location really well, I mean like to do it the right way, the right equipment, hiring the right staff, marketing to the community so they know we're actually coming is about$200,000.

Now that is a number that makes me gulp real hard and almost pass out.

Right, but 400 bricks, half of our wall.

400 bricks over 12 months, it's 240,000 dollars.

Which of course means 800 bricks, we take out the whole wall, it's 480,000 ministry dollars to push us towards our vision.

It happens fast, almost like miraculous multiplication.

God has positioned us with just boundless opportunity.

And I hope you know this.

We are as frugal as we know how to be.

You can see evidence of that.

We have like thousands of square feet of this building that we still haven't built out.

We haven't paved our back parking lot.

We don't have a sign on the top of our building.

There's just a sign hole.

Forget all that.

We haven't put doors on the bathrooms.

Every time I land a point and think I'm gonna get an amen, someone flushes a toilet in the back.

And it's because we're targeting every dollar at reaching more people.

And if we can get this one barrier out of our way, there's nothing else stopping us.

I know money is tight.

But we spend$50 on a lot of things.

It's another cell phone line, it's it's half of the CrossFit gym that we haven't been to in seven months.

It's four of our streaming subscriptions tied into one.

It's pink Stanley cups that people are stabbing each other over in Starbucks.

It's pretty tough actually, if you have, you know, even a family of three or four to hit a drive-thru nowadays and not get close to 50 bucks.

Some of us are addicted to our Dutch bros every morning.

If you look, I mean, if you really looked, if you're three or four times a week at Starbucks or Dutch Bros, you're spending hundreds of dollars a month.

And the question is, what sacrifices are we going to be willing to make?

An incremental sacrifice that God can use in absolutely exponential ways.

And so here's how it's gonna work.

We're gonna do this for three weeks.

And you already know this, but at MetaCurch, um, no one is going to judge you if you don't come grab a brick.

As a matter of fact, some of you are number crunchers, and what you need to do is go home this week.

This is what Katie and I did on Friday morning.

We took out our budget, line by line, asking the question how much can we take down this barrier?

Maybe you need to do that and come back next week or the week after that.

But in a little while, the band is gonna come up, and while they play, it's your opportunity to come right up from to the front.

And for every$50 you're willing to increase, to grab a brick.

So let me be clear.

I'm asking everyone who can to make an incremental increase of at least$50, which means if you're not giving or you're not giving consistently, begin giving at$50 a month and set it up to be a recurring gift.

If you are giving monthly, if you're giving$75 a month, I'm asking you to make room to move to$125 a month to come get your brick, go to your seat, and set up a recurring gift.

It's a visual.

We're gonna see the barrier going down.

Can I tell you a praise report?

In one service already, over a hundred bricks were taken.

It's unreal, it's happening, it's happening.

Some of you are not in a season to do this.

I understand.

If you really think through, and there there isn't a sacrifice you can make right now, I'm gonna ask you to keep praying, to keep serving, to keep believing, and your season will come.

For some of you, God's really blessed you.

It's been a while since you've thought about how much you're giving.

And realistically, you could increase$200.

$300.

If you really, if you really looked, you have it in you.

You have the margins.

If that's you, I want you to grab a brick for every$50 in faith.

We bought bags, so you don't gotta carry around five bricks out of here.

If you can give$250 a month increase, grab five of these bricks.

Take down this barrier.

If you're watching online, you're a part of this too.

We're gonna put the link to set up your recurring gift.

And after you do it, just put in the chat, we have someone monitoring one brick, two bricks, whatever you grab, and we will pull them for you after service.

Nine of our bricks were taken by people streaming with us last service.

It's happening.

It's happening.

I'm gonna get really practical of what this looks like.

I'm asking you to give recurringly.

When it's not recurring, we can't forecast off of it, which means we can't plan off of it.

When it's recurring, we can count on it, which means we can start marching towards our future, taking this movement to the ends of the earth.

There's a QR code in front of you on the seats.

There will be one on the screen as well.

Couple ways you can do this.

If you're gonna give 50, you can put in$50 once a month and put whatever day you want it to come out.

You can also give it off each paycheck, put in$25 a month, and set it for the first and 15th or to come out twice a month.

Jesus fed 20,000.

There were baskets left over.

The resources for the crowd were in the crowd.

And I believe that the resources for this movement are in this movement.

Let me pray for you.

Jesus, we love you.

We thank you for what you're doing.

I ask over the next three weeks you would prepare our hearts, that you would challenge us, that we would ask, what are the sacrifices I can actually make?

What would it look like five years from now, ten years from now, to look back at the moment that we removed the only barrier in our way?
