What Must I Do?

[SPEAKER_00]: Now that we know the law, where does it leave us?

[SPEAKER_00]: And the point I want you to see is that the law on its own by itself leaves us desperate.

[SPEAKER_00]: Desperate and sin, because we haven't kept it or self-righteous, because we think we're good on it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what we're going to see and look at team.

[SPEAKER_00]: So turn there.

[SPEAKER_00]: Turn to look at team versus nine.

[SPEAKER_00]: So anyone bend to a mud run here at the church before the Burr's house.

[SPEAKER_00]: Who's bent to a mud run?

[SPEAKER_00]: Raise your hands.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: There we go.

[SPEAKER_00]: Who is one of the dirtiest people at a mud run?

[SPEAKER_00]: Who's got a mud dirty?

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: We think Levi.

[SPEAKER_00]: If it is Malkai, I was going to say it's Malkai.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if someone's got a dirty other than Dave Sternberg who's definitely off there though, a couple years ago.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you go to the mud run.

[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine that.

[SPEAKER_00]: You go to the mud run.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's over, and you need to go home.

[SPEAKER_00]: Problem is, you're like, Malachi, and you've covered, and dirt, or you're just covered and dirt.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so you need to go home.

[SPEAKER_00]: Your mom's there with the car, but she says, you can knock it in this car until you are clean.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you've got a couple things you might do.

[SPEAKER_00]: Mom, I might be a little bit dirty, but I'm not as dirty as Malachi.

[SPEAKER_00]: Look at him.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's filthy.

[SPEAKER_00]: He looks like a dog, but just, I don't even know, like a pig to just

[SPEAKER_00]: And so, sorry guys, I talked about poop a lot.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna come up later on the sermon too, so just be ready for that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'm not as bad as him, so there's comparison, that's one response.

[SPEAKER_00]: The other way out is this, oh I'm so sorry mom, I'll try to clean up.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so you start like rubbing the dirt off.

[SPEAKER_00]: And guess what?

[SPEAKER_00]: You'll still be muddy.

[SPEAKER_00]: These are hands or muddy.

[SPEAKER_00]: You might get some of the chunks up, but you're still not gonna be clean.

[SPEAKER_00]: You need to go to the river.

[SPEAKER_00]: Me, that's someone else clean you off, who is clean.

[SPEAKER_00]: So cleaning yourself up before you come is not going to work.

[SPEAKER_00]: Comparisoning clean yourself up.

[SPEAKER_00]: And last one is self-confidence.

[SPEAKER_00]: Where you're kind of blind.

[SPEAKER_00]: You think, I'm not that dirty.

[SPEAKER_00]: You look at me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And here's the thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: You might not feel like you're dirty.

[SPEAKER_00]: But maybe there's a place you haven't checked yet.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, even if you've washed off on the outside, you guys, you've been in the mud right now, and I mean, if you've washed off on the outside, there's still some areas where the dirt, you have not guided out.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when you say in the car, it's all going to ooze out.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's going to be even grosser, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: How, what must we do?

[SPEAKER_00]: How can we get clean so we can get in the car?

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's read our passage.

[SPEAKER_00]: The car here is an illustration for God's kingdom.

[SPEAKER_00]: See you in Luke in the gospel of Luke.

[SPEAKER_00]: In chapter 17, down through 18 verse eight, he's been talking about the kingdom.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is coming in as kingdom is glory and he will judge the world.

[SPEAKER_00]: It'll be everlasting joy and heaven with God or everlasting shame and pain for our sin and hell.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the question is, what must we do to enter God's kingdom and not the punishment that we deserve for our sins?

[SPEAKER_00]: How can we get into Mount's car when we're filthy with our sin?

[SPEAKER_00]: Because the contaminants have exposed our sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: These two three little stories,

[SPEAKER_00]: We'll tell us, we'll show us different ways to respond to conviction that God's will ought to see our sin, some of them are wrong, some of them are right.

[SPEAKER_00]: So let's read the passage and then we'll pray.

[SPEAKER_00]: Luke 18 verse 9 says, Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and treated others with contempt.

Luke 18:9

[SPEAKER_00]: Two men went up into the temple to pray.

[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, the Pharisees were like the pastors.

[SPEAKER_00]: They were like the good spiritual godling people.

[SPEAKER_00]: At least that's whatever one thought.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Pharisees, verse 11, standing by himself, prayed thus, God, I thank you that I am not like either men, extortioners, people who steal a raw people, unjust, adulterers, or even like this task collector.

[SPEAKER_00]: I fast twice a week, I give types of all that I get.

[SPEAKER_00]: But the task collector,

[SPEAKER_00]: And it kind of goes to the pastor, kind of guy, the Pharisee, I don't want heat to text lectures, because they know the text lectures come and they steal more money than they actually are supposed to take.

[SPEAKER_00]: They then just take it for themselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: First our team, by the text collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: He says, I tell you,

[SPEAKER_00]: This man, the tax collector, went down to his house justified, rather than the other.

[SPEAKER_00]: For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now we're stitching.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

[SPEAKER_00]: But he has called in him saying, that the children come to me and do not hinder them, but to such belongs the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God, like a child, shall not enter it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you see this theme, continuing.

[SPEAKER_00]: How can we enter God's kingdom?

[SPEAKER_00]: The answer before is pump with yourself.

[SPEAKER_00]: The answer this one is, like a child, see, receive it, receive it like a child and you will enter it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then this next one, verse 18.

[SPEAKER_00]: And a ruler asked him, Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

[SPEAKER_00]: It Jesus said to him, why do you call me good?

[SPEAKER_00]: No one is good except God alone.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know the commandments, do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honoring your father and mother.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, all these have kept from my youth.

[SPEAKER_00]: When Jesus heard this, he said to him, one thing you still lack.

[SPEAKER_00]: Settle all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you have treasure and heaven, and come follow me.

[SPEAKER_00]: But when he heard these things, he became very sad when he was extremely rich.

[SPEAKER_00]: First 24.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus, seeing that he became sad, said it.

[SPEAKER_00]: How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: For it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: And those who heard said, then who can be saved?

[SPEAKER_00]: But Jesus said, what is impossible with man is possible with God?

[SPEAKER_00]: And Peter said, see, we've left our homes and followed you, and he sent to them, truly I say to you, there is no one who is left, house or wife or brothers or parents or children who are the sake of the kingdom of God who will not receive many times more in this time and in the age to come eternal life.

[SPEAKER_00]: And in this passage, he continues talking about how he's going to suffer and die, and then he goes on to heal this blind beggar, and we'll talk about that later, we'll

[SPEAKER_00]: What do you need to help them?

[SPEAKER_00]: We want to be refreshed by the Lord.

[SPEAKER_00]: We need the gospel.

[SPEAKER_00]: But we can be so blinded by comparing ourselves to others.

[SPEAKER_00]: But I just try to clean ourselves up.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thinking we're able on our own, but we don't see the depth of our sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: So show it to us now.

[SPEAKER_00]: Show us how we can come to you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus name, amen.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well my first point is,

[SPEAKER_00]: Answering that question, how do we enter heaven is, come as a sinner?

[SPEAKER_00]: Come as a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: Besides that's kind of weird.

[SPEAKER_00]: How do you get into heaven?

[SPEAKER_00]: What do you have to do?

[SPEAKER_00]: Be a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: Come as a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: Look at, first nine.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you use to hold a parable about those who trust in the cells that they were righteous to each other with contempt?

[SPEAKER_00]: Two men went into the temple to pray.

[SPEAKER_00]: One of the Pharisees and the other a task collector.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the Pharisee, Pharisee means a separated one.

[SPEAKER_00]: They're the holy group, the holy huddle.

[SPEAKER_00]: They're the ones who are different than everybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: And they know it, like, yeah, we're better.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're different than everybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're separated, we're holy.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so even his posture shows that he stood by himself, it says, he walked into temple like he owned the place.

[SPEAKER_00]: I belong here.

[SPEAKER_00]: I deserve to be here because I'm holy and it's a holy place.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is a right key things to God's presence.

[SPEAKER_00]: Why does he think that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he goes on in praise, and it shows why.

[SPEAKER_00]: God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners unjust, adulterers, or even like this text collector.

[SPEAKER_00]: He thinks he is right to be here.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, one, of course, he noticed, I'm gonna get some credit to God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, God, that I'm way better than everybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's only you who made me so amazing.

[SPEAKER_00]: He pretends he's giving credit to God.

[SPEAKER_00]: And there's like religions like Roman Catholicism.

[SPEAKER_00]: That says, we're saved by grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: But when they say, say, great grace, they really mean, grace helps you to be a good person, so you can earn your salvation.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's basically what this guy was saying.

[SPEAKER_00]: God, I'm so thankful that you made me, if you helped me be a really good person, so I could earn my stats, and I could become better than everybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: So he thinks he's seven, he's different than everybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: He gives credit to God, kind of.

[SPEAKER_00]: but mainly he compares himself to other people.

[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, thanks.

[SPEAKER_00]: God, the reason I have a right to be here in your presence is because I look at everybody else in the world, I'm way better.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm far more holy than far more righteous.

[SPEAKER_00]: Not only that, not only do I not do those things for bidding the take of amance,

[SPEAKER_00]: But I have to do these extra things.

[SPEAKER_00]: I fast twice a week.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Bible doesn't even say to do that.

[SPEAKER_00]: It just, it says the fast sometimes, but I do it twice a week.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I give tides of all that I get.

[SPEAKER_00]: And guess what?

[SPEAKER_00]: The Old Testament didn't say it at the time, everything you've got.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to bother me on it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we've just finished to take the name of the series.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we see here an example of how learning by the 10th of Mammons can go wrong.

[SPEAKER_00]: We can look at it all and think, man, now I know all these things.

[SPEAKER_00]: I do pretty good.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not like all the people in the world.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so much better than that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, these I know these things and I do some of them superficially, got access to me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And another thing we do, when we think that really is by how, what we do, our own merit that got accepts us, is what judge others?

[SPEAKER_00]: We'll treat them with content.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you see what it says?

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you sense parable on verse nine?

[SPEAKER_00]: to those who trusted themselves that they were righteous and treated others with contempt.

[SPEAKER_00]: Often we can take an idea or principle from the Bible and then in order to really react and be better than all those people will make it really, really serious.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like we fast twice a week or I tied up all that I have.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then we follow a carefully-cleaning bestest standard that makes us really pleasing to God.

[SPEAKER_00]: These extra things we do.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we think God's pleased with me,

[SPEAKER_00]: Because I'm one of the few who takes that portion as words seriously.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so it poisons your perspective every one else around you.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you think about them and treat them with contempt for their, for their, just for the differences, and you have confidence in your superiority.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's not what we can do.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm special.

[SPEAKER_00]: I do these things that nobody else does.

[SPEAKER_00]: I go above and beyond and follow my God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Even though a dot product doesn't say we have to do this, and then you judge others for those things.

[SPEAKER_00]: What might that be?

[SPEAKER_00]: I remember when I was maybe a freshman, one of the things was food, I was like, I eat health here.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't eat all that pot and all that candy and all that junk food, I'm better than all these people.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when I ate food with people, you guys are probably like, that's silly about you, not a candy.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's amazing.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when I eat with people, I make them feel bad about the food choices they ate.

[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you guys do that?

[SPEAKER_00]: See, the Bible doesn't command what specific foods we eat.

[SPEAKER_00]: It says to not be gluttonous.

[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not safe to judge people that they have different conclusions on what is good and right to eat.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's just one example.

[SPEAKER_00]: Guys, we're doesn't speak about it.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's not like making that for a statement of our righteousness.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's another thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: I myself.

[SPEAKER_00]: I consider this tendency to look at other people and think, look at, they're not as good as me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Again, they don't do this thing that I think, and so I'm condemning them.

[SPEAKER_00]: But here's what you need to remind yourself of.

[SPEAKER_00]: Every time you treat others with intent, you look at them and you despise them.

[SPEAKER_00]: You need to keep their lower class.

[SPEAKER_00]: They're not really worthy of being treated well.

[SPEAKER_00]: It shows that you're trusting in yourself that you're righteous.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it shows in your heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's saying that.

[SPEAKER_00]: They trust themselves with their righteous and so they treat others with intent.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because if you think the reason you're accepted by God is because you're special, you do this extra thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: You think you earn your salvation, then you think you have a right then to judge others, to look down and despise those who don't do the same things.

[SPEAKER_00]: So just remember this, why should we condemn those who've got it justified?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why should we hate those who've got it's love?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why should we despise those who've got it delighted?

[SPEAKER_00]: And please think Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the reason we do this.

[SPEAKER_00]: Here's why we love talking about people's faults.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you guys ever do that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Especially if you get an argument with someone and you'd like to go to your other friend or your sibling or whatever it is and talk to all the mean things they did to you?

[SPEAKER_00]: Can't focus on their wrongs and not your own.

[SPEAKER_00]: The reason we do that is because we want to prove ourselves right.

[SPEAKER_00]: We want to feel good about ourselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: We want to hide ourselves, so we focus on other people's sins.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's why we've got to know about people.

[SPEAKER_00]: Know that shows you're not trusting in Jesus for your righteousness, you're trusting in yourself.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when you trust in yourself, you have to put down on the people because it makes you look better, you compare yourself.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, it, doing this, condemning others to justify yourselves, if Jesus supports our feeling of self-righteousness.

[SPEAKER_00]: So as long as we stay focused on the sins of others, we don't have to deal with our own.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we do with it.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we compare it.

[SPEAKER_00]: But instead of comparing ourselves and saying, that's my gosh, it's acceptable because I'm not like all these other men, all these other people, which you compare ourselves to God and His law.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like this tax collector, who came into the temple, of course, if he could bring himself in anybody, he would feel this fair because he's like, what are the worst of the worst?

[SPEAKER_00]: But most of all, he's looking at God.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's thinking, I'm in this temple that's a holy place, and I'm a corrupt sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why it says, he's too far off.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Pharisee went right up in Phil's stood by himself like, he's God, like he's the holy one.

[SPEAKER_00]: The textleter said, I need to be as far as possible.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be a lift up my eyes to heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he did it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but he beat his breast.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's going like this.

[SPEAKER_00]: Which is that's what he's basically saying, he was mourning like a woman when someone died.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's what they would do.

[SPEAKER_00]: They would

[SPEAKER_00]: and weep and wail, because someone had died, or some serious tragedy had happened.

[SPEAKER_00]: But here's a tragedy in this guy's life.

[SPEAKER_00]: He just began to saw his sea sin for what it was.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he realized, that's worse than the death of any person I love.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the sins I've committed against God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Not just isolated sins, but my whole life long.

[SPEAKER_00]: I have disobeyed, I have disrespective.

[SPEAKER_00]: I have provoked God to anger with my sins and not cared about it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he's finally starting to realize that and realizing, what have I done?

[SPEAKER_00]: And what's gonna happen to me now?

[SPEAKER_00]: I can only expect judgment.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why he says, God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's very short prayer, God be merciful to me.

[SPEAKER_00]: He can't appeal to anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let me entertain him because I'm not like other men, it's like, no, I'm worse than other men.

[SPEAKER_00]: Be merciful to me, not for anything of me because all I am is a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to pretend to have anything to offer to you because I don't.

[SPEAKER_00]: Be merciful to me a sinner, which means the merciful to me only because you are just merciful.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that word, merciful there, is not the normal word for mercy.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually saying, make an atonement for me.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the same word used for appreciation and other places in the Bible, which that means make a sacrifice.

[SPEAKER_00]: But he's in the temple, and he's like, I know how committed sins that no sacrifice can cover.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because I knew it was right to do, but I did the wrong thing over and over and over again.

[SPEAKER_00]: Lord, none of these sacrifices that see around me will cover it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I need you to make a special sacrifice.

[SPEAKER_00]: One that can cover even my outright rebellious sins against you.

[SPEAKER_00]: But what does there any way you can do that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Because anyway, you can make someone else something else take the punishment, so I don't have to be punished for these sins that I deserve.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like when you're at magic waters, I heard you can harbor or no is marked.

[SPEAKER_00]: And there's that big bucket at the top of the little water playplace, and it's filling up with water, gradually, and that starts to tip, and then it pours out on you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Every time we sin, it's like, there's that cup of God's wrath that I would talk to about and we're filling it up with sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus says, fill up then the measure of God's wrath.

[SPEAKER_00]: And this man knew he'd been filling up for so long.

[SPEAKER_00]: He says, I'm moments away from that cup tipping and pouring on me.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm moments away from being casted to hell.

[SPEAKER_00]: I know it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I deserve it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Is there any way Lord, you can be merciful to me?

[SPEAKER_00]: A sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, here about how God can be merciful later, but Jesus tells us what happened.

[SPEAKER_00]: Any person listening to that, they say, oh, obviously though, the Pharisee, the good guy who's better than everyone else, is going to go away, accentuate God and justify.

[SPEAKER_00]: But Jesus doesn't say that.

[SPEAKER_00]: He says, I tell you, this man, who's been defrauding and hurting people as entire life, went down to his house, having been justified.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know what that word means?

[SPEAKER_00]: It means declared righteous.

[SPEAKER_00]: Here's a way to remember it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Justify God sees me when I'm justified, by faith, by trusting in Him, when I say, have mercy on me as sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: He looks at me just as if I'd justified, just as if I'd never sinned, and just as if I'd lived the perfect life of Jesus lived.

[SPEAKER_00]: Does that make sense?

[SPEAKER_00]: Just as if I'd never sinned, just as if I'd lived like Jesus, perfectly obedient to God.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's how he sees you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Why?

[SPEAKER_00]: forever is who adults himself will be humbled but one who hums himself will be exalted.

[SPEAKER_00]: See, when you compare yourself to others, you'll think, I'm pretty good.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when you compare yourself to God, you'll realize whether you're the Pharisee or the tax collector.

[SPEAKER_00]: The difference between me and that tax collector is nothing compared to the difference between me and the holiness of God who hates sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: When we look at God's law, it shows us that.

[SPEAKER_00]: So instead of playing a comparison game with other people, play with Jesus, who's the perfect revolve revelation of God's righteousness.

[SPEAKER_00]: We need to come to Jesus as sinners, saying there's nothing that makes me worthy.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what, we can even be people who think, at least I'm not like that, they're a CEO over there, who's always judging people, who thinks you've got everything right.

[SPEAKER_00]: See, our self-righteousness is so deceptive, that no matter what kind of person we are, we can always find a reason to trust in ourselves and treat ourselves with contempt.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's why we need to learn to come to Jesus as a sin and stop comparing ourselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Pharisee walked through the temple like he owned a place, the tax collector was afraid to even come near.

[SPEAKER_00]: But this has to go to God the invitation to return, because those who humble themselves will be exhausted.

[SPEAKER_00]: How many of yourself is not a great work to offer to God?

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just acknowledging you have nothing to give to Him.

[SPEAKER_00]: That the only thing you contribute to salvation is the sin that makes it necessary.

[SPEAKER_00]: sinners, not compare ourselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: The next thing we'll see in this as we need to come as children, come as a child and you don't need to make yourself where you don't need to clean yourself up.

[SPEAKER_00]: Look at verse 15.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them.

[SPEAKER_00]: See, there's something about G.S.

[SPEAKER_00]: that they're like, even though no one else would really care who's a public, popular person of the time and all children have their names.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's something about that.

[SPEAKER_00]: He actually would care about these little babies.

[SPEAKER_00]: That might, most of the babies back then didn't live very long.

[SPEAKER_00]: 40% or 50% would die before they were like 20 and pretty sure as well I read it.

[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't seem that important until they lived longer and proved that they could actually survive.

[SPEAKER_00]: But there's something about Jesus is approachable.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's accessible.

[SPEAKER_00]: He actually cares about worthless people.

[SPEAKER_00]: whether it's at least seeing what it was in the eyes of our culture.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, Jesus moves on to talk about children.

[SPEAKER_00]: And remember, whenever you read the gospels, they don't just throw of these passages together.

[SPEAKER_00]: They have a reason.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's a reason this passage on Jesus saying, like a little sort of common, is next to the one about the tax collection of Pharisees.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus, why?

[SPEAKER_00]: Tax collection of Pharisees just as stories used to hold.

[SPEAKER_00]: Little sort of incoming is an actual thing that happened and it illustrates the children are kind of like that tax

[SPEAKER_00]: So they're bringing the impetus to Jesus to make my touch them and bless them.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when the disciples saw it, they were built them.

[SPEAKER_00]: Get those kids away from him.

[SPEAKER_00]: But Jesus called them to him.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's so beautiful.

[SPEAKER_00]: They were reviewing the impetus to the way Jesus called them.

[SPEAKER_00]: And saying, let the children come to me and do not hinder them for too much belongs to the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God, like a child shall not enter it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, what is it about children that's so special?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why is it that we have to receive the keynote guy like a child?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why did you say that?

[SPEAKER_00]: What if you receive the keynote guy like a child and that's how we enter it?

[SPEAKER_00]: The reason is this, children are helpless.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just like little kids, it's infants, basically.

[SPEAKER_00]: Who, if you don't feed them, they will starve.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't clean them, they're going to be, yeah,

[SPEAKER_00]: covered in poop, diaper's going to overflow.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if you leave a nugget cold, they're going to die.

[SPEAKER_00]: They cannot survive without help.

[SPEAKER_00]: You just say, you need to acknowledge like the task-collector dollar is a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: You acknowledge your dependent and needy like a child.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now I've never told this next story in public before.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's here and for a treat right now.

[SPEAKER_00]: When I was very little, I go over to my grandma's house for sleepovers, and it was awesome.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was always great.

[SPEAKER_00]: We would get ice cream and cookies and snacks before bed, and then sleep in her nice beds.

[SPEAKER_00]: They were always so clean and fresh, and then wake up, and we get to watch Disney cartoons which we can never watch at home, and then they have a Grammy breakfast.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what you call it.

[SPEAKER_00]: A Grammy breakfast, bacon, sausage, waffles, poptarks, pancakes, whatever we want.

[SPEAKER_00]: She was amazing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Best grandma ever.

[SPEAKER_00]: Every night was so great, until one fateful night.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's right.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, our bedroom was pretty close to the bathroom, but that night it was not close enough.

[SPEAKER_00]: I woke up in the middle of the night, and I knew I needed to get the bathroom fast.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't really know what happened next.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of a blur, but I woke up.

[SPEAKER_00]: I woke up later on the toilet.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was all dark.

[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't have the light on the bathroom.

[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I'm fine.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I got up, stood up, and then under my toes through my sock, I felt a squish.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then horror began to fill my heart and dread.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I moved across the road to the light switch, squish, squish, squish, squish, squish, turn me on and it only got worse.

[SPEAKER_00]: All over the floor, even on the carpet outside the bathroom, I apparently had pulled my pants to start pooping before even got a bathroom.

[SPEAKER_00]: All over the floor, the carpet, the toilet, was covered in poop.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, when my grandma, she's going to be angry.

[SPEAKER_00]: I got to clean this up before she finds out.

[SPEAKER_00]: Smear the poop around the floor.

[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't really clean it that well, but I was trying.

[SPEAKER_00]: I gave it the old cows to try Put it in the toilet flush it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I guess flushing the toilet so many times woke up my grandma So she came to the door She said Daniel, you okay And she knew I wasn't so she opened the door and she's like given the shower.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'll clean it up.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like is that all?

[SPEAKER_00]: So I got in the shower.

[SPEAKER_00]: She took all my girls' poop clothes.

[SPEAKER_00]: I asked her to wipe all the poop off myself because it was all over me.

[SPEAKER_00]: This happened about a year ago, just you guys come on, just come on, just come on.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I took shower and she did all for me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Think about that.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's disgusting.

[SPEAKER_00]: In case you guys didn't realize that, it's disgusting.

[SPEAKER_00]: She probably got poop on herself from me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it smelled gross and she did all.

[SPEAKER_00]: What she couldn't have been sleeping.

[SPEAKER_00]: so that I could get clean and go back to bed.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I say that because it kind of illustrates how health is children are.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like I was only making more of a mess.

[SPEAKER_00]: No more.

[SPEAKER_00]: I was trying to like smear it around.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I was going to be able to have a long time.

[SPEAKER_00]: But she came and she helped me clean myself off.

[SPEAKER_00]: And she cleaned up my mess.

[SPEAKER_00]: And children are always creating messes.

[SPEAKER_00]: We are needy.

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't contribute anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: For many, many years, we're more of a burden than a benefit.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, Jesus says, you've seen the kingdom of God as a child.

[SPEAKER_00]: And notice in the passage, it says that disciples, Jesus tells them, do not hinder them, because the human heart wants to put obstacles in their way.

[SPEAKER_00]: wants to make qualifications on God's grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: And his love, say, yeah, it's not for them.

[SPEAKER_00]: They're not quite worthy enough.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we want to do that, not just, we don't just do that for other people, like they're not ready, they're not worthy.

[SPEAKER_00]: But even for ourselves, we're saying, God, I can't let God see all my mess.

[SPEAKER_00]: If he does, he'll be angry at me, just like I thought about my grandma.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I took clean it up first before I come to him.

[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe you sin, and if that really bats in it, you said you would never do again, but you keep doing, and you think, I can't pray to God right now.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to wait for a while until there's some distance between me and the sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm cleaning myself off a little bit and then I'll come to him.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's a song coming sinners that says, if you wait, do you tear it until you're better, you will never come at all.

[SPEAKER_00]: Going back to that, remember the beginning, I was talking about the modern one, just trying to clean yourself off.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like me, I was just putting it on the poop.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was just disgusting.

[SPEAKER_00]: We cannot clean ourselves up.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you wait until you're all cleaned up, until you worthy of Jesus' love, you will never come to Him.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can come, you can call Him in the middle of your poof mess, like I needed up to do with my grandma.

[SPEAKER_00]: But where's in that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Our sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can come to Jesus and He will wash you off.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you'll find that He is kind, that He is gracious, that He forgives.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're helpless, children are helpless.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's why Jesus says, we see the kingdom like a child.

[SPEAKER_00]: He don't need to clean yourself up.

[SPEAKER_00]: He only make yourself worthy.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus expects it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He only knew that you're going to trick anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't save us because of what we get him, what we offer to him, but he just loves us.

[SPEAKER_00]: He loves us because he loves us.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's changeling humility, humiliating to be caught in your sin like that.

[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want it to happen, but you will be surprised by Jesus and His mercy.

[SPEAKER_00]: He will forgive you.

[SPEAKER_00]: He will change and cleanse you.

[SPEAKER_00]: He will wash you.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he took, and the cross, he took, just like my grandma probably got dirty when she was trying to clean me up.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus took the sins of the world upon himself and the cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: Sanctrine's 521 says he became sin, who knew no sin, that we might become the righteousness of God in heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: He took our filth so we could become clean.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like my grandma, he worked, he woke up, he did the hard work, so we could rest.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we could be clean and rest and have access to God and not be kicked out of the house for how filthy we are.

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't take all of ourselves, he will qualify us.

[SPEAKER_00]: He will make us fit for heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: So remember, you don't have to qualify yourself for grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can come to him as a child, needy.

[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to clean yourself up.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can come as a child.

[SPEAKER_00]: And often, what keeps us from coming as a child,

[SPEAKER_00]: is that not only are we ashamed of our sin, but on the other side, we can actually be blind.

[SPEAKER_00]: We think it's not really that big of a problem.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not that big of a mess.

[SPEAKER_00]: I can do it on my own.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what we'll see in this next story.

[SPEAKER_00]: This self-sufficiency, this self-confidence that's blind to its own mess.

[SPEAKER_00]: So come, number three is a beggar.

[SPEAKER_00]: Come as a beggar.

[SPEAKER_00]: And a ruler asked Jesus, verse 18,

[SPEAKER_00]: Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

[SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus said to him, why do you call me good?

[SPEAKER_00]: No one's good except God alone.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, some people think that means that Jesus is saying He's not good and He's not God.

[SPEAKER_00]: But we know from the rest of the Bible and from Jesus on teachings that He was sinless.

[SPEAKER_00]: He was good.

[SPEAKER_00]: He did lots of good things, people was obvious in his life.

[SPEAKER_00]: And He also claimed to be God in the proof that when He rose from the dead and did all those miracles.

[SPEAKER_00]: So that's not what it's saying.

[SPEAKER_00]: And said, this guy's just casually coming up like, oh, hey, I'm a good person, you're a good teacher.

[SPEAKER_00]: What good things do I ask my life so I can get into heaven?

[SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus is saying, think more deeply about what it means when you say that word good.

[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody's good except God.

[SPEAKER_00]: So Jesus is saying, think more about who I am.

[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I am good.

[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'm that one God, think what you believe about who I am that you're talking to, I'm not just a good teacher.

[SPEAKER_00]: Also think more deeply about who you are.

[SPEAKER_00]: If no one is good enough God, that means you are a sinner.

[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have it all figured out.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if you think that you're blind, you're a blind beggar, even though this ruler is the rich guy.

[SPEAKER_00]: Who thinks he knows it all, who thinks he sees.

[SPEAKER_00]: So Jesus, here's what goodness looks like.

[SPEAKER_00]: A little test.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know the commandments, just like you guys should know the commandments, but we've been teaching through them.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do not committed adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father or mother.

[SPEAKER_00]: So guys, think right there, did you leave any commandments out?

[SPEAKER_00]: Look at that verse.

[SPEAKER_00]: Verse 20.

[SPEAKER_00]: Both of them used to Jesus leave out there.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'll just take them in this.

[SPEAKER_00]: Half a boom, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: You only give five commandments there.

[SPEAKER_00]: No other God before me.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's really good.

[SPEAKER_00]: The first command and then one, two, three, four, all the ones who have God, and then the last one, that also gets to the heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: Caleb, he said, last week, you shall not covet.

[SPEAKER_00]: So then look at Jesus next.

[SPEAKER_00]: After this guy says, all these I have kept from my youth.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: When you said what Jesus heard is he said to him, one thing you still lack, you think you're perfect, you think you kept it to your whole life, kept it perfectly, your whole life, but there's one thing you still lack, actually.

[SPEAKER_00]: So all that you have to distribute to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven and come follow me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you say that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Because he knew this man's heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew this man idolized money and possessions.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew it was too precious to him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he exposed, I mean, it's hard with simple, I corrupt, there's 23, when he heard these things he became very sad, he was extremely rich, he's like, treasured heaven, doesn't sound good to me, I kind of like this world, I'm kind of content with my superficial morality right now.

[SPEAKER_00]: So here's what this teaches us, God's law demands perfection, perfect obedience, there's

[SPEAKER_00]: It's personal obedience, that's the first p. Exact, entire, perpetual, personal, exact, entire, perpetual, perpetual.

[SPEAKER_00]: So personal means, you do it with all your heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: You actually love that, and that's why you obey them.

[SPEAKER_00]: It comes from a heart of faith, trust, and love for God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Then it's exact obedience.

[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly what God will recommend.

[SPEAKER_00]: Not just on the outside, don't murder, but also on the inside.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't have lust in your heart, or the inside don't be angry, don't be hateful, or not the outside don't commit adultery on the inside.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at the moment when lust you've already committed adultery in your heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: Exact obedience and entire.

[SPEAKER_00]: So James 210 says whoever keeps the whole law and some of the one point will be guilty of breaking all of it.

[SPEAKER_00]: See this man thought he kept him off in his youth, but it's whole life under the surface.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's been breaking the 10th Amendment and the 1st Amendment, the greatest commandment.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to not love God above all things.

[SPEAKER_00]: He loved His worldly possessions more.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, perfect, or personal, exact, entire perpetual, your whole life long.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if you look that you realize I'm a sinner, I cannot do that.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when Jesus is trying to expose your blind.

[SPEAKER_00]: You don't see your sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: You think you've kept the commandments, but you're looking too shallow, too superficial.

[SPEAKER_00]: They require more.

[SPEAKER_00]: See rich people, like this man used a rich young ruler.

[SPEAKER_00]: They can go anywhere and be accepted.

[SPEAKER_00]: So they're used to that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Think about this few places that Elon Musk could go and not get in.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's got the money.

[SPEAKER_00]: If the hotel is one, let him in, he can buy the hotel.

[SPEAKER_00]: No matter how much he offers though, if Elon Musk came to head, no matter how much he offers, they will not let him in.

[SPEAKER_00]: They will not accept him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's what Jesus goes on in this passage, he says how difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: See, in those times, they thought rich people, the reason they're rich is because they're righteous.

[SPEAKER_00]: God's blessed them, and poor people, the reason they're poor is because they're perverted.

[SPEAKER_00]: They're sufferers because they sit.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when Jesus says that the rich people, it's hard for that, I know the kingdom of heaven, which normally, I think, goes to the top people who go into heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: They realize what who that can be saved.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's harder for them to enter heaven than to go through an eye of the needle.

[SPEAKER_00]: A camel goes through an eye of the needle.

[SPEAKER_00]: Who can be saved?

[SPEAKER_00]: No one.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're all sinners.

[SPEAKER_00]: We will all show up at the gates of heaven, not like Elon Musk, not able to buy our way in, demand that we let be let in, but like blind beggars crying as we see later this passage, son of David, have mercy on me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let me in.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because the only thing that could pay our debt of sin and person here to us is heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: It had it as the precious blood of Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: What you can get this one, can I save you or satisfy you?

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus offers forgiveness.

[SPEAKER_00]: For the task lecture I said, have mercy on me, making a tone for me, does nothing else can pay for my sins.

[SPEAKER_00]: Only just off of forgiveness.

[SPEAKER_00]: So don't be blind to your sins.

[SPEAKER_00]: Come to him and realize you are a beggar.

[SPEAKER_00]: Martin Luther, the reformer at the end of his life, his last words were these, we are beggars, this is true.

[SPEAKER_00]: We come to God with nothing but to ask, have mercy on me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then also, when you come to Jesus for forgiveness, you don't just give up your works, but you don't give up that thing that you prized the most.

[SPEAKER_00]: What's keeping you from Jesus?

[SPEAKER_00]: What's keeping you from getting your life completely to him?

[SPEAKER_00]: Who you are seeing more of the rings?

[SPEAKER_00]: I love more of the rings, who knows about God.

[SPEAKER_00]: And He loves the ring, He says, My precious.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when anyone tries to take that from him or tries to destroy him, he will get angry, he will freak out, he will run away and isolate himself or try to kill them.

[SPEAKER_00]: And some of us are that way.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're kind of finding people until they start touching and getting close to the things we just love so much.

[SPEAKER_00]: Our precious.

[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's a secret thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: When they start exposing that, we're going to cut them off.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're not hate them for it.

[SPEAKER_00]: We'll maybe we'll try to isolate ourselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: We'll never get up, give it up for Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: But just like God, I'm bad thing is corrupting us.

[SPEAKER_00]: If we keep holding on to it, keep loving it over what Jesus offers.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because this man was doing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Frodo, in the movie, was blind to the ring's effect on him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And needed Sam to warn him.

[SPEAKER_00]: But what did he do when Sam warned him?

[SPEAKER_00]: He said, get away from me.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're lying.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're the problem.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, it's posting you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Is that what you do to people who play out sin in your life?

[SPEAKER_00]: How do you respond?

[SPEAKER_00]: He might be blind.

[SPEAKER_00]: He might be being deceived by this thing that's so precious to you.

[SPEAKER_00]: And one day, it will lead you to your death like it did with Donald, off the cliff into the volcano.

[SPEAKER_00]: Sin and the thing that looks so shiny, sparkling harmless and precious in our eyes is actually a sinister force.

[SPEAKER_00]: Controlling and corrupting you until it will betray you to your death.

[SPEAKER_00]: I have been time and time again the war of the rings, and it happens every day in this world.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think we've prized in this world, and we prefer above God as idols, our sins, our supersens that we all let anyone get near to, we will not give it up, even if it's going to keep us from Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: just realize it's lying to you.

[SPEAKER_00]: What Jesus offers is better, and that's why he says that, and then into the passage.

[SPEAKER_00]: Truly I say to you, there's no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time in the age to come eternal life.

[SPEAKER_00]: What Jesus offers to you is so much better.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's so much more precious, everything else is garbage, it's pulsed as in Philippine's three.

[SPEAKER_00]: So people receive forgiveness, the righteousness that he offers you,

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see the life of the office if that's far better than any of these worlds can offer.

[SPEAKER_00]: When you see the law, don't try to make yourself feel better by comparing yourself to others.

[SPEAKER_00]: Or by trying to clean yourself up before you come to Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: You offer forgiveness now and you can do that because he died for you.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he talks about.

[SPEAKER_00]: In the passage, he will fulfill the scriptures by being delivered over to the Gentiles verse 32, mocked and shamedfully treated spit upon, and after vlogging him, they will kill him in another third day, he will rise.

[SPEAKER_00]: He predicted it and he did it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He rose again.

[SPEAKER_00]: But the disciples in understanding at the time, they were blind, they couldn't understand their sin or the gospel.

[SPEAKER_00]: But the next story about a blind beggar who comes, says Sunday to have mercy on me, and just like the disciples with day with the children, people were abusive.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus doesn't care about you, but the Jesus calls him again.

[SPEAKER_00]: And look at this, verse 41.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus says, what do you want me to do for you?

[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, before the ruler who you're saying, what must I do to inherit your life?

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus comes to this beggar and says, what do you want me to do for you?

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the difference between the law and the gospel.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the law we say, what can I do to be saved to inherit your eternal life?

[SPEAKER_00]: And the gospel says, what can I do to continue?

[SPEAKER_00]: What can I do for you?

[SPEAKER_00]: He asked, Lord, let me recover my sight.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus said to him, recover your sight, your faith has made you well.

[SPEAKER_00]: And when the rich man, when Jesus spoke to him, he was grieved and went away and said, I don't wanna follow Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: When Jesus made the demand, you must follow me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus didn't even tell this guy to follow him.

[SPEAKER_00]: He says, your faith has made you all your forgiven.

[SPEAKER_00]: But verse 343, and immediately he recovers sight and follow him.

[SPEAKER_00]: glorify God and all the people when they saw it gave grace to God.

[SPEAKER_00]: See, that's what a heart that's truly forgiven does.

[SPEAKER_00]: It wants to follow G.S.

[SPEAKER_00]: even though it didn't ask for it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that should be our heart as well.

[SPEAKER_00]: Being grateful for the grace we show us.
