  1. Five ways we create our own storms sometimes. See, some

  2. waves are God-ordained in our lives, but some waves are

  3. waves we make, and sometimes we create our own anxiety,

  4. and then we ask God for peace. But how can

  5. he give you peace in a situation that you're currently creating?

  6. And so I got five things for you. Just real quick,

  7. I won't take.

  8. Long on them, but number one, often we create anxiety

  9. and waves in our lives with the words that we speak.

  10. Just write that down, words.

  11. Words.

  12. Words.

  13. Have you ever made unnecessary waves with your words?

  14. Words that you.

  15. Speak out of anger that you then have to go

  16. back and fix.

  17. It takes a week, two weeks, three weeks. Words of doubt.

  18. Words of some of you, just you frame your day

  19. with the wrong words. And then you're disappointed with the

  20. world that you've built. But your world is created by

  21. your words.

  22. And sometimes we make waves.

  23. You know, we create choppy conditions in the morning just

  24. by the way we get up talking.

  25. And then one thing is another.

  26. My grandmother used to say this phrase all the time.

  27. She'd say, y'all about to worry me to death. And

  28. she'd say it about anything. You know, the TV's too loud.

  29. Turn that TV down. Y'all about to worry me to death.

  30. About to worry me to death. And she was a

  31. wonderful lady.

  32. But you know what?

  33. As a result of her saying all the time, you're

  34. about to worry me to death, she was worried a lot.

  35. Because she said she wanted to be worried.

  36. We read a teaching one time in a book that said,

  37. after anything you say in your life, don't say it

  38. if you can't follow it with this phrase, and that's

  39. just the way I want it. And that's just the

  40. way I want it.

  41. So try it out on the things you say.

  42. You're about to worry me to death, and that's just

  43. the way I want it. And I'm just running around

  44. like chicken with my head cut off.

  45. I'm so stressed out. And that's just the way I

  46. want it. You've got your own phrases.

  47. But the words we speak create waves of anxiety. Check

  48. your words. Number two, your approach. Sometimes it's not what

  49. we're going through. It's the way we're going through what

  50. we're going through. Some of us live with no margin,

  51. and so we're always nervous.

  52. It's our approach.

  53. Anxious about money because we spend too much and don't

  54. make enough.

  55. No margin. It's your approach.

  56. You start your morning frustrated with people in traffic. You

  57. know there's going to be traffic. You've never adjusted the

  58. time that you get up and leave your house. Now

  59. you're wondering why your job is so stressful. Your job

  60. is not stressful. The way you got to your job

  61. was stressful.

  62. Because of your approach. I'm going to help a student.

  63. Your class is not stressful.

  64. The fact that you knew about the assignment for three

  65. weeks before you thought to look it up is the

  66. approach that made it stressful.

  67. She's just so mean. She's not mean. You're just a procrastinator.

  68. You're making your own waves. Can I get a parent?

  69. Back me up in the.

  70. House.

  71. That's the second one. The wrong voices.

  72. The wrong voices can create unnecessary and needless waves and anxiety.

  73. In our lives, can't they?

  74. Man, if you check the news or your Twitter feed

  75. on your phone before even getting up to use the

  76. bathroom in the morning, And you wonder why the outlook

  77. on life that you have is so dark. I think

  78. 24-7 news stations and news is one of the worst

  79. things that ever happened to our peace of mind as people.

  80. No offense to the media. No offense to a journalist.

  81. But I mean, I was reading through just some headlines

  82. the other day. Do you really need to understand the

  83. dynamics of every disease?

  84. Like every disease?

  85. Do you really need to understand the dynamics of every

  86. conflict in all these countries that you can't pronounce? Need

  87. to meditate? No wonder you're marinate-ed. You're marinating in the

  88. wrong reports. The wrong voices. They'll come in and tell

  89. me from time to time about a problem in the church.

  90. And when they get to a certain point, I'll say, thanks,

  91. that's all I need to know.

  92. What am I doing?

  93. I need good information to make a good decision. But

  94. I don't need so much information that.

  95. It clouds my outlook, so I can't.

  96. Let the wrong voices just keep on playing, keep on going,

  97. and then they said this, and then they did that,

  98. and they might do that, and it could be that.

  99. You know, at some point you just got to say,

  100. I'm creating waves by all the voices I'm listening to.

  101. I listen to depression. I watch depression. The people I

  102. hang around are depressing. I'm making my own waves. Hello.

  103. Hello. Hello. Hello. Our expectations can create waves.

  104. Sometimes you go out in your life and the anxiety

  105. that you feel is the result of the expectations of

  106. others that you created by not being willing to manage

  107. your own energy. Sometimes the anxiety we feel is because

  108. we get up in the morning and we don't expect

  109. any battles that day. And so we feel like it's

  110. a surprise attack when something hits us wrong. Why are

  111. you surprised? He said, put on the full armor of God.

  112. That suggests you're going to be in a fight. He said,

  113. take up the helmet. He said, take up the shield.

  114. He said, take up the sword. He said, you got

  115. to get dressed for battle when you get up in

  116. the morning. Don't be surprised. You need to learn to

  117. expect some storms. I think the fact that it's unexpected.

  118. is often the reason it's so difficult. And then there's

  119. the master wave maker in our souls.

  120. It's called shame. Shame.

  121. Shame.

  122. You walk around anxious because you're hiding stuff.

  123. And you wonder, when are they going to find out

  124. about my secret? Or maybe because you're tormented by something

  125. that God already forgave.

  126. See, there's a difference.

  127. Between conviction and shame. Conviction is good. It shows you

  128. what to fix. And it gives you God's power to

  129. help fix it. Shame tells you that because of what

  130. you did, who you are is now fundamentally changed. And

  131. it makes you walk around paranoid. And it makes you

  132. walk around feeling helpless. And it makes you walk around

  133. feeling like people don't love you who do love you.

  134. And people are judging you that aren't judging you.

  135. And you've got to learn where to take your shame

  136. or it will just rock you. Waves. And they wake

  137. Jesus up and they say, don't you see the waves?

  138. Don't you care if we die?

  139. So verse 39, Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and

  140. said to the waves, quiet, be still.

  141. We got up and he said, quiet, be still. Three words.

  142. Three words.

  143. Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

  144. And he said to his disciples, why are.

  145. You so afraid?

  146. Don't you know that when I tell you we're going

  147. to the other side, we're going to.

  148. Get to the other side? Don't you know that I

  149. command the wind and the waves?

  150. And see, they didn't yet. They hadn't seen enough yet.

  151. They haven't experienced enough yet. After you've been through a

  152. few storms, it's interesting what you learn. Do you still,

  153. look at it, have no faith? And then verse 41,

  154. it says, they were terrified and asked each other, who

  155. is this?

  156. Even the wind and the waves obey him. If you

  157. thought they were scared of the storm, they really freaked.

  158. Out when they found out that with three words, he

  159. could shut it off like a showerhead. Whoa. Whoa. So

  160. I want to suggest something to you today about the

  161. storms of anxiety in your life and the waves and

  162. the winds that are blowing in your life.

  163. Because, man, the winds will blow. They will blow. Absolutely.

  164. And the waves will break and they will crash. No

  165. doubt about it.

  166. And in those times when Jesus is sleeping in the

  167. stern and he doesn't take action and he doesn't fix

  168. your situation, it can be easy to deduce what the

  169. disciples deduced. We're going to die and God doesn't even care.

  170. Start playing it out all the way to the end. Man,

  171. this is how I'm going to die right here. This

  172. is how it's going to end right here. I'm never

  173. going to get another job. I'm never going to have

  174. any belts on me.

  175. I'm never going to... Anxious for nothing.

  176. Because they eventually got to the other side. Yeah.

  177. And see, I wonder.

  178. All week, why would Jesus send them into a storm?

  179. Just like we wonder in our lives, why doesn't God

  180. do more about the chaos in our world? Why doesn't

  181. he fix situations before they get that bad? We celebrate

  182. when God heals somebody of cancer, but silently we wonder,

  183. why did they have to have cancer to begin with?

  184. We celebrate when somebody's kid comes back to God, but

  185. we wonder then, why did God let the kid wander

  186. away to begin with? We celebrate that somebody went to heaven,

  187. but we wonder why did God have to make it

  188. so that people die and we feel pain and sorrow.

  189. Don't you care?

  190. And Jesus was upset about that. You know what?

  191. I don't think he was upset that they woke him up.

  192. I think they were supposed to wake him up. I

  193. think he wanted them to go wake him up.

  194. I do.

  195. I think it's the way they woke him up that

  196. bothered him. See, because they.

  197. Woke him up thinking you must not care.

  198. You don't care.

  199. He said in Philippians 4, 6, didn't he? In everything,

  200. make your requests known to God. You're supposed to ask God.

  201. You're supposed to go down to the stern and say.

  202. Lord, I need a little help right now. Lord, this

  203. doesn't feel good. God is pushing against me.

  204. God is getting cloudy and I don't know what to think.

  205. And the sky's growing black. Would you help me, Lord?

  206. Would you come, Lord? But don't assume he doesn't care.

  207. Don't assume that. See, because I believe, you don't have

  208. to take this view if you don't want to. I

  209. believe that Jesus put them in the storm not to

  210. test them, but to teach them.

  211. I can explain.

  212. See, Jesus wasn't going to be with them forever. We

  213. don't have Jesus in physical form. We have the spirit

  214. of God inside of us as believers, but we don't

  215. have Jesus in our boat. What a cool picture. Just

  216. like Jesus was in the stern, the spirit is inside

  217. of you, but we don't have Jesus.

  218. Anymore in physical form in our boat.

  219. And so I think Jesus, when he stood up and

  220. he said, quiet, be still, and the wind and the

  221. waves died down.

  222. You know what I think he was doing? I think

  223. he was.

  224. Using the wind and the waves like a whiteboard to

  225. draw a lesson plan.

  226. For the disciples. Follow me, follow me, follow me.

  227. Because the real waves that take you down in your

  228. life are not the ones out there. They're the ones

  229. in here. And see, you think it's the circumstances making

  230. you anxious.

  231. It's not. You think it's the other person's reaction. How

  232. do I know this? James chapter 1 verse 6. James

    James 1:6 James 1:6

  233. chapter 1 verse 6.

  234. He says, when you ask God, you must believe and

  235. not doubt.

  236. Now watch what doubt does. Watch what doubt does. Because

  237. the one who doubts is like a... You see it?

  238. Like a wave of the sea. Blown and tossed by the...

  239. When that's.

  240. Why God lets me experience winds and waves in my

  241. life so he can teach me to calm the wind

  242. and the waves within. See, the real waves are within

  243. and you'll never have peace until you learn how to

  244. speak peace to.

  245. The waves within. So Jesus said, watch this.

  246. He said, be still.

  247. And the waves shut up. And he said, now it's

  248. your turn.

  249. What I just did to the sea, I want you

  250. to do to your anxious heart. And the next time

  251. the winds of what if start blowing and the winds

  252. of imaginary scenarios and negative emotions start blowing, I want

  253. you to get up and wake up your faith from

  254. the stern of the ship and get out and hold

  255. up your hand and.

  256. Say, quiet, be still. The waves within.

  257. Come on. I'm preaching about the waves within. Because if

  258. you learn how to calm the waves within, you can

  259. ride the waves without. I found out that if you

  260. learn how to calm the waves within, it's.

  261. About the atmosphere of your heart. The waves within. The

  262. waves within.

  263. You think the problem is that God won't calm the

  264. waves without. The real problem is you haven't learned to calm.

  265. The waves within.

  266. And we learn how to be peace speakers to our

  267. own souls. I thought it was random when the order

  268. of this stuff. Because Jesus, Mark chapter 4, he's talking

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  269. about the sower and the soils. And then we go

  270. straight into the storm. And I couldn't figure out why

  271. Mark edited those two together. But I realized that both

  272. are about atmosphere.

  273. Atmosphere.

  274. Every heart has an atmosphere. I wonder today, what is

  275. the atmosphere of your heart? Can I tell you that

  276. nothing good develops in an atmosphere of anxiety?

  277. Nothing.

  278. And Jesus said, whether you're thinking about a farmer and

  279. a soil, that's the atmosphere of the earth or a

  280. storm in the sky. You've got to learn how to

  281. take command of the atmosphere of your heart because.

  282. Here's what's happening.

  283. You're creating an atmosphere of anxiety all around you because

  284. there's an atmosphere of anxiety within you.

  285. You're taking it.

  286. Out on people and you're frustrated with people and you're

  287. short with people and you're withdrawn from people and you're

  288. blaming people.

  289. But you've got to get up and wake up your faith, Peter.

  290. Jesus said, you see what I did? Now you do it. Speak. Speak.

  291. Speak.

  292. Awaken your brave within. So here's what I do. You

  293. want to know what I do? You want to know

  294. what I do? Check this out. When the waves start

  295. in my life, first thing I do, I breathe. Physically.

  296. Some of y'all are like, yes, the breath of God. No, no,

  297. just I physically breathe.

  298. Do it now. You feel it? Do it again. Do

  299. it again.

  300. They've suggested that the reason the Hebrew name of God

  301. is Yahweh is because the very name sounds like a breath.

  302. Yahweh. So that when you breathe, every breath is a

  303. prayer reminding you.

  304. That he's inside of you sustaining. Here comes the waves,

  305. but I know how to Breathe.

  306. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. So I

  307. breathe in his grace and then I can breathe out. Breathe. Breathe, dog. Breathe.

  308. Breathe.

  309. And then I remember.

  310. Yeah.

  311. I remember that he told me we're going to the

  312. other side.

  313. I remember that like he started this.

  314. I tell God all the time that you started this.

  315. And so I remember, oh, like David did when he

  316. was standing before Goliath. Wait a minute, just like the

  317. lion and the bear, God's about to take this joker

  318. down too. Breathe. And then remember, trigger something in your

  319. mind that reminds you of the faithfulness of God.

  320. Watch the waves die down. And then I.

  321. Ask. He said, make your request known to God. Lord,

  322. will you help me here? I'm up on a choppy sea.

  323. I just got a report about my mother's health.

  324. Lord, they just did that thing again that you know

  325. sends me off in that direction.

  326. Help, Lord. You don't have to say a lot sometimes.

  327. Just help, Lord. He'll hear you. With thanksgiving, though. Thank you, Lord.

  328. Now help, please. Thank you, please. Thank you, please. Get

  329. in that rhythm of asking, asking. It'll be given to you. Seeking,

  330. you'll find. Knock and the door will be open. I

  331. ask and I.

  332. Visualize because the storms can wreck your visibility, can't they?

  333. It can cause you to lose sight of everything God's

  334. put around you and.

  335. You can't see anything but what's flashing right in front

  336. of you. So I ask, And then I open the

  337. eyes of my heart.

  338. And I try to get an awareness of, hey, look,

  339. God is here. Hey, look, there is strength. Hey, look,

  340. I am standing. Hey, look, there is help. Hey, I

  341. see you now, Lord. I have opened the eyes of

  342. my heart. And then you got to elevate. You got

  343. to elevate. I found out that you're going to love

  344. this if you're a nerd. atmospheric pressure gets less as

  345. elevation increases. Think about that spiritually speaking. Think about that

  346. spiritually speaking. Something hangs heavy over your life, and you

  347. can't make what's hanging over you less heavy, but you

  348. can get up higher in your perspective if you will

  349. elevate and worship God and lift your hands and begin

  350. to praise him.

  351. In the storm.

  352. So so when the waves come I gotta what's that

  353. I got a cheat sheet.

  354. Did y'all see this I got oh the words and the.

  355. Approach and the voices remember we talked about these just

  356. like 25.

  357. Minutes ago and the Expectations and the shame. That's the waves.

  358. When the waves come, you didn't know I was smelling anything.

  359. I snuck it in. I'm tricky.

  360. When the waves come up, I need to check this

  361. wave and.

  362. See if I made it or if God made it.

  363. Here comes the wave, but watch this.

  364. Just as soon as the wave comes, breathe.

  365. Breathe. Remember, ask, visualize, elevate. Oh, that's the brave.

  366. Also, come here. Come here, Dewey. Hold my mind.

  367. So so so here it is in the series when

  368. the waves come because they will get your brave stirred

  369. up In your spirit. And wake up your faith. In

  370. the stern of the ship. And when the waves come.

  371. Because they will. Here comes fear. Here comes panic. Here

  372. comes dread. Here comes embarrassment. Here come words. Here come actions.

  373. Here come voices. Here come expectations. Here comes faith.

  374. But here comes brave. And my God has given me

  375. the breath of life. And his spirit is stronger than

  376. any storm.

  377. I'm pushing back waves.

  378. Come on.

  379. Lift your hands.

  380. Lift your hands.

  381. Worship. Push it. Hey, thanks for watching. Make sure to
