  1. We're going to read from 2 Peter, chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  2. ! I think in the church Bibles, like the one I have up here, it's 1, 2222.

  3. Page 1, 222.

  4. We're going to read the whole chapter.

  5. Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness

  6. of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, have received a faith as precious as ours, grace and peace

  7. be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

  8. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge

  9. of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.

  10. Through these, He has given us His very great and precious promises so that through them

  11. you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused

  12. by evil desires.

  13. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness and to goodness knowledge

  14. and to knowledge self-control and to self-control perseverance and to perseverance godliness

  15. and to godliness mutual affection and to mutual affection love.

  16. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective

  17. and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  18. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election.

  19. For if you do these things, you will never stumble and you will receive a rich welcome

  20. into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  21. So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established

  22. in the truth you now have.

  23. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,

  24. because I know that I will soon put it aside as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

  25. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure, you will always be able to remember

  26. these things.

  27. For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord

  28. Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  29. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the majestic glory,

  30. saying, this is my son whom I love, with him I am well pleased.

  31. We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

  32. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,

  33. and you will do well to pay attention to it as to a light shining in a dark place,

  34. until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  35. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about

  36. by the prophet's own interpretation of things.

  37. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will,

  38. but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along.

  39. By the Holy Spirit.

  40. That's God's Word.

  41. So this series is entitled, Why Bother Coming to Church?

  42. And the title I've got tonight is God's Word.

  43. We're going to look at two passages.

  44. We've looked at 2 Peter there.

  45. We'll look at Ephesians a bit later on as well.

  46. But first, I was wondering if you have thought about the power of words before.

  47. Words can make or break relationships and friendships.

  48. They can build people up or tear them down.

  49. In high school, we studied the play Julius Caesar,

  50. where the character Mark Antony was able to completely reverse

  51. an angry mob's opinion with just a speech,

  52. just a few rhetorical tricks.

  53. The Bible itself starts off showing God's power in his speech,

  54. in that he was able to say,

  55. let there be light, and there was light.

  56. It says he created the world simply by speaking it into existence.

  57. His speech is so powerful that it can make things happen physically.

  58. God still speaks today through the Bible.

  59. And so since this series is on why bother coming to church,

  60. I'm hoping to show you that it's worth coming,

  61. because through church, we can get the full experience of God's Word.

  62. God wants us to experience the power of His Word as a community,

  63. as well as individuals.

  64. So firstly, we'll think about the nature of God's Word,

  65. looking a bit closely at 2 Peter.

  66. What we mean by God's Word, to be clear,

  67. is the Christian Scriptures, the Bible,

  68. composed of all the books in the Old and the New Testament.

  69. What we affirm as Christians is that these books

  70. are fundamentally different in nature

  71. to any other book and any other piece of writing.

  72. In this chapter, 2 Peter tells us why.

  73. Firstly, the Bible is sufficient for salvation.

  74. And secondly, the Bible is spoken by God.

  75. So we look at verses 3 and 4.

  76. It says,

  77. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life

  78. through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.

  79. A slightly different translation, it says,

  80. God's divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

  81. When Peter says us there, it's not a sort of general us.

  82. He's talking particularly about the group of people known as the apostles.

  83. They were the people that Jesus taught face to face

  84. and went around the world to spread His teaching.

  85. They received that teaching, that gospel from Jesus,

  86. and Jesus told them all that's required for someone to be saved and to live a godly life.

  87. And this knowledge is what's preserved for us in these written scriptures.

  88. The New Testament comes from the apostles.

  89. It's written by them and it builds on the foundation of the Old Testament.

  90. So the Bible contains everything required to have eternal life in the future

  91. and also to live a godly life now.

  92. As the free church, we adhere to the Westminster Confession,

  93. and there's a good part of that that says,

  94. the whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for His own glory,

  95. mankind's salvation, faith, and life

  96. is either expressly set down in scripture

  97. or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from scripture.

  98. You might be someone today who wants to know how to live properly.

  99. Maybe you've explored some different philosophies or religion,

  100. and this is the first time in a church.

  101. I'm telling you today that the Bible contains all things

  102. that pertain to life and godliness.

  103. All the answers are found in the Bible.

  104. On the other hand, perhaps you're already a Christian today,

  105. but you're wanting more.

  106. How do I understand God more?

  107. How do I know more about what He wants?

  108. Well, that part of the Confession says that the whole counsel of God,

  109. that's all His commands, all His promises,

  110. all His wisdom for our lives,

  111. is either set down explicitly in scripture

  112. or comes as a logical consequence of what's written.

  113. So there's nothing missing.

  114. All the instruction that God has given you

  115. in how to live a godly life is expressly set down in scripture or implicit.

  116. We might wonder how this is possible.

  117. How can a finite set of words contain all that's required to be saved and to be godly?

  118. And you might notice the repetition in this chapter of the knowledge of God,

  119. the knowledge of Christ.

  120. It says,

  121. He's granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,

  122. in verse 3,

  123. through the knowledge of Him who has called us to His own glory and excellence,

  124. the knowledge of Christ.

  125. Through the scriptures,

  126. we come to know Jesus.

  127. In fact,

  128. the scriptures are the supreme way of knowing Jesus.

  129. I've had conversations with people before who might say things like,

  130. I experience God most when I'm doing the things I love,

  131. or when I'm listening to the music I love,

  132. or around the people I love.

  133. Maybe they feel they experience God most when they're on some journey to a different country.

  134. But that fails to recognize that scripture is the primary way in which we know God.

  135. And it makes sense in a way, doesn't it?

  136. If you have a relationship with someone,

  137. a friendship or something romantic,

  138. you get to know them by listening to what they say.

  139. It's true that God gives us wonderful things like friends and music

  140. and a natural world to enjoy.

  141. But saying those things are where you're closest to God is like saying,

  142. I'm closest to my wife when I'm playing on the games console she bought me.

  143. We come to know God more by listening to His words

  144. and speaking back to Him through prayer

  145. and taking them to heart.

  146. The result of this is that we have eternal life.

  147. If you read verse 4, it says,

  148. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises

  149. so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,

  150. having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

  151. It says that through the scriptures we participate in the divine nature.

  152. I think a lot of the time when we talk about the divine nature,

  153. we're meaning the way God is God and He's different to us.

  154. So we might be confused and think that this means that we're becoming gods

  155. or something like that.

  156. But the rest of scripture makes it clear that that's not what it means.

  157. It doesn't mean we become divine or that we become part of God.

  158. What it means is that ultimately in the end,

  159. the believer in God will share in God's immortality and glory.

  160. The believer will live forever in a new creation without pain, suffering, illness or death

  161. if you hear and do what's written in this book, the Bible.

  162. So the scripture is sufficient to give you a saving knowledge of God

  163. and to enable you to live a godly life now.

  164. Secondly, the thing that makes it unique is that scripture is spoken by God.

  165. If you glance down to verses 19 to 21,

  166. it says,

  167. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable

  168. and you will do well to pay attention to it as to a light shining in a dark place

  169. until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  170. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of scripture

  171. came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things.

  172. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will,

  173. but prophets, though human, spoke from God

  174. as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  175. What Peter is saying in these verses

  176. is that in the final analysis,

  177. the Bible comes from God.

  178. It is true that there is a great deal of human involvement

  179. in writing the scriptures.

  180. They didn't descend from heaven on golden tablets.

  181. They were written by people.

  182. You can see that when you read it.

  183. Each author has a different style.

  184. They have distinct contributions to the message.

  185. Sometimes they use different sources

  186. and sometimes they borrow words or concepts

  187. from their surrounding cultures.

  188. But as the authors did their writing,

  189. spiritually they were carried along

  190. by the Holy Spirit,

  191. as it says in verse 21.

  192. The Holy Spirit was the Bible's divine editor.

  193. He superintended the gathering,

  194. editing and writing of these books

  195. in such a way that they can be said

  196. to be God's words.

  197. Men spoke from God

  198. as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  199. In the final analysis,

  200. every word in scripture is there

  201. because God intended it to be there.

  202. Scriptures come from God.

  203. This is a couple of implications for us,

  204. doesn't it?

  205. Firstly, because it comes from God,

  206. it has authority.

  207. It's like receiving a decree from a king.

  208. It comes from the top.

  209. It warrants being taken seriously.

  210. If I went to work one day

  211. and I received an email from the CEO,

  212. the owner of the company,

  213. I'd sit up and pay attention.

  214. Not that I don't usually sit up and pay attention

  215. if anyone from work is watching.

  216. The Bible has authority

  217. in our individual lives.

  218. So we need to take it seriously.

  219. Are we sitting under its instruction

  220. in our personal lives?

  221. Does it impact you beyond Sunday?

  222. Are you making your decisions

  223. with reference to what God has said?

  224. As well as individually,

  225. the Bible has authority

  226. over us as a community,

  227. as a church.

  228. Here's a part from that same confession

  229. I quoted earlier.

  230. It says that the Holy Spirit

  231. speaking through the Bible

  232. is the supreme judge

  233. by which all controversies of religion

  234. are to be determined.

  235. And all decrees of councils,

  236. opinions of ancient writers,

  237. doctrines of men,

  238. and private teaching

  239. are to be examined by them

  240. and in whose sentence

  241. we are to rest.

  242. What that's saying is that

  243. Scripture has the final word.

  244. in all matters of church life.

  245. How do we know

  246. if our church is teaching

  247. the right thing?

  248. We examine it

  249. in light of Scripture.

  250. If a certain issue comes up

  251. and starts to divide people

  252. in the church,

  253. how do we settle it

  254. with reference to Scripture?

  255. Scripture.

  256. The Scripture has authority

  257. because it comes from God.

  258. Secondly,

  259. since the Scripture

  260. has its origin in God,

  261. it has a particular

  262. excellence

  263. or a particular

  264. glory.

  265. Glory.

  266. Peter says in verse 19

  267. that it's like a lamp

  268. shining in a dark place.

  269. Scripture is a good thing.

  270. It's good for our souls.

  271. It reveals God to us.

  272. God who is perfect

  273. without fault,

  274. evil,

  275. or any darkness.

  276. And God says good things

  277. to us

  278. through the Scriptures.

  279. I compared it before

  280. to a decree

  281. given by a king,

  282. but the Scriptures

  283. are also like a love letter.

  284. God says wonderful,

  285. loving,

  286. sweet things

  287. to us

  288. through the Scriptures.

  289. words to be enjoyed,

  290. words to be encouraged by,

  291. words to give you comfort

  292. in times of distress.

  293. What do people do

  294. with love letters?

  295. They enjoy them,

  296. they read them repeatedly,

  297. thinking about the person

  298. on the other end.

  299. The love letter reveals

  300. how much affection

  301. the writer has for you.

  302. The writer pours out

  303. their heart to you

  304. and reveals

  305. their goodness and love.

  306. So it is with the Bible.

  307. They're a sweet thing.

  308. The Bible is God's

  309. love letter to you.

  310. Through it,

  311. God shows His people

  312. that He's good,

  313. that He's glorious,

  314. that He cares for you,

  315. that He loves you,

  316. that He forgives your sins

  317. and can satisfy you

  318. with eternal life.

  319. God's love letter to you

  320. and He loves you.

  321. I sometimes meet people

  322. who feel bad

  323. for not reading

  324. the Bible enough.

  325. Maybe I'm like that sometimes

  326. and I'm sure you are too.

  327. And we sometimes think

  328. the solution is just

  329. to try harder,

  330. just to have a better schedule,

  331. read it more times per day.

  332. I think in those times

  333. we've understood

  334. the authority of the Bible.

  335. We take it seriously

  336. and we feel bad

  337. for not giving it enough time.

  338. But in those times

  339. perhaps it's helpful

  340. to remember its goodness.

  341. If you can grasp

  342. that the Scriptures

  343. are a good thing,

  344. a sweet thing,

  345. a wonderful thing,

  346. a healthy thing,

  347. then perhaps our hearts

  348. will draw us to them.

  349. God's Word is a treat

  350. for the soul,

  351. a loving Word

  352. from a loving God.

  353. So God's Word

  354. is sufficient for salvation,

  355. sufficient for us

  356. to know God

  357. and to live Godly lives.

  358. And the Scriptures

  359. are spoken by God,

  360. meaning they have

  361. a particular authority

  362. in goodness.

  363. We're going to turn now

  364. to our second reading

  365. in Ephesians.

  366. It's Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  367. Let me find the page.

  368. It's page 1175.

  369. 1175 in the church Bibles.

  370. Ephesians 4, 11 to 16.

  371. Let me just read that.

  372. So Christ Himself,

  373. after He ascended to heaven,

  374. gave the apostles,

  375. the prophets,

  376. the evangelists,

  377. the pastors,

  378. and the teachers

  379. to equip His people

  380. for works of service

  381. so that the body of Christ

  382. may be built up

  383. until we all reach unity

  384. in the faith

  385. and in the knowledge

  386. of the Son of God

  387. and become mature,

  388. attaining to the whole measure

  389. of the fullness of Christ.

  390. Then we will no longer

  391. be infants

  392. tossed back and forth

  393. by the waves

  394. and blown here and there

  395. by every wind of teaching

  396. and by the cunning

  397. and craftiness of people

  398. in their deceitful schemes.

  399. Instead,

  400. speaking the truth in love,

  401. we will grow

  402. to become in every respect

  403. the mature body of Him

  404. who is the head,

  405. that is Christ.

  406. From Him,

  407. the whole body,

  408. joined and held together

  409. by every supporting ligament,

  410. grows and builds itself up

  411. in love

  412. as each part does its work.

  413. This next heading is

  414. The Power of God's Word

  415. in the Church.

  416. This part of Ephesians

  417. shows that God's program

  418. for how the word works

  419. is through community.

  420. I think some folks might

  421. see the Christian life

  422. as an individual exercise,

  423. something that's just

  424. between you and God.

  425. I've heard a number of times

  426. people saying

  427. you don't need to go to church

  428. to be a Christian.

  429. But the Bible challenges that.

  430. What we see in Ephesians

  431. is that what God is doing

  432. in the world

  433. is building a community

  434. of united,

  435. mature,

  436. and stable believers.

  437. And He does that

  438. through the ministry

  439. of His Word.

  440. Look at verse 11.

  441. Paul is talking about

  442. the gifts

  443. Jesus gives to the church

  444. since He was resurrected

  445. and ascended to heaven.

  446. He gave apostles,

  447. prophets,

  448. evangelists,

  449. shepherds,

  450. and teachers.

  451. Shepherds is just

  452. another word for a pastor.

  453. And it's a surprising idea,

  454. isn't it?

  455. What gifts does God

  456. give to the church?

  457. He gives the church people.

  458. And these particular people

  459. that are talked about

  460. in Ephesians

  461. have something in common.

  462. They're all

  463. scripture people.

  464. They're all word people.

  465. The apostles

  466. and the prophets

  467. wrote the scriptures.

  468. The evangelists,

  469. the shepherds,

  470. or pastors,

  471. and Bible teachers

  472. are people

  473. who expound it

  474. to people.

  475. James and your

  476. other elders

  477. at this church

  478. are gifts from God

  479. to you

  480. to build you up.

  481. This is something

  482. you miss

  483. if you try and do

  484. the Christian life

  485. by yourself.

  486. You'll miss the gift

  487. of other people.

  488. A faithful ministry

  489. by pastors and elders

  490. is a wonderful gift

  491. to a church.

  492. There are people

  493. who we can ask

  494. our questions

  495. to about life,

  496. faith,

  497. and the Bible.

  498. There are people

  499. who can help guard us

  500. from bad teaching.

  501. There are people

  502. who can capably

  503. use the scriptures

  504. to help us

  505. when we're struggling

  506. with life.

  507. All those things

  508. are true.

  509. But in this passage

  510. the big thing

  511. the Bible teachers

  512. are doing

  513. is they're training

  514. and equipping you

  515. in the church.

  516. If we read

  517. verse 12

  518. in a slightly different

  519. translation than ESV

  520. it says

  521. he gave these

  522. scripture people

  523. to equip the saints

  524. for the work

  525. of ministry

  526. for building up

  527. the body of Christ.

  528. It's striking

  529. isn't it

  530. that in this passage

  531. the work of ministry

  532. or service

  533. as it's translated

  534. in the NIV

  535. is done by the saints

  536. which refers

  537. to everyone

  538. in the church.

  539. And this ministry

  540. looks like

  541. speaking God's word

  542. to each other.

  543. If you look

  544. at verse 15

  545. it says

  546. speaking the truth

  547. in love

  548. we're to grow up

  549. in every way

  550. into him

  551. who is the head

  552. into Christ.

  553. The truth

  554. in love

  555. that it's referring

  556. to is primarily

  557. the truth

  558. of the gospel

  559. given to us

  560. in the scriptures.

  561. We can tell

  562. because it's placed

  563. in contrast

  564. to verse 14

  565. where it refers

  566. to the false doctrines

  567. and deceitful schemes

  568. of humans.

  569. There's a lot

  570. of ideas

  571. that go around

  572. in our culture

  573. on the internet

  574. various philosophies

  575. that are wrong

  576. incomplete

  577. and against

  578. the gospel.

  579. We read

  580. from 2 Peter

  581. earlier

  582. and the big problem

  583. that congregation

  584. was facing

  585. was a group

  586. of false teachers

  587. that said

  588. Jesus isn't really

  589. coming back

  590. and that you get

  591. the most out of life

  592. by indulging

  593. every sinful desire.

  594. What that church

  595. needed back then

  596. is the same

  597. as what we need today.

  598. We need to speak

  599. the truth

  600. of the gospel

  601. in love

  602. to each other.

  603. What are we trying

  604. to do as a church

  605. when we have

  606. our small groups

  607. or I think you guys

  608. have student lunches

  609. what are we trying

  610. to do with that?

  611. What are we trying

  612. to do when we meet

  613. each other for coffees?

  614. We're trying to speak

  615. the truth of the gospel

  616. in love to each other.

  617. Reminding each other

  618. about the truth

  619. of the Bible.

  620. Encouraging each other

  621. with different parts

  622. of the gospel

  623. maybe challenging

  624. each other

  625. were required.

  626. Paul is saying

  627. in Ephesians

  628. that the church

  629. grows

  630. when all the members

  631. of the church

  632. are ministering

  633. God's word

  634. to each other.

  635. together.

  636. Now this doesn't mean

  637. that you have to have

  638. all the answers.

  639. It doesn't mean

  640. you have to be a theologian.

  641. It doesn't mean

  642. you can't be

  643. questioning things yourself.

  644. All it means

  645. is that we're willing

  646. to open the Bible

  647. with each other.

  648. That we're willing

  649. to think and speak

  650. about the Bible together.

  651. It could be as simple

  652. as spending a Saturday

  653. morning getting a coffee

  654. with someone

  655. from the church

  656. and reading a chapter

  657. of a Bible book together.

  658. Coming to church services

  659. is an example of that.

  660. The preacher speaks

  661. to you from the front

  662. but after it

  663. when we're all

  664. talking together

  665. we're all encouraging

  666. each other

  667. with God's word.

  668. And what's the result

  669. of this?

  670. God gives the teachers

  671. to equip everyone

  672. in the church

  673. to speak the word

  674. to each other

  675. and the result

  676. is unity,

  677. maturity,

  678. and stability.

  679. Let me just read

  680. some of these

  681. sections of Ephesians again.

  682. So from verse 12

  683. it says that

  684. he gave those people

  685. to equip his people

  686. for works of service

  687. or ministry of the word

  688. so that the body

  689. of Christ

  690. may be built up

  691. until we all reach

  692. unity in the faith

  693. and in the knowledge

  694. of the Son of God

  695. and we become mature

  696. attaining to the whole measure

  697. of the fullness

  698. of Christ.

  699. Then we will no longer

  700. be infants

  701. tossed back and forth

  702. by the waves

  703. and blown here and there

  704. by every wind of teaching

  705. and by the cunning

  706. and craftiness

  707. of people

  708. and their deceitful schemes.

  709. So the picture there

  710. is that God gives

  711. Bible teachers

  712. to the church

  713. and they equip

  714. the people

  715. in the church

  716. to build each other up

  717. using God's words.

  718. In verse 13

  719. it says

  720. that we build

  721. each other up

  722. until we attain

  723. to the unity

  724. of faith.

  725. Paul is clear

  726. earlier

  727. in the letter

  728. to the Ephesians

  729. that unity

  730. in the church

  731. is bought by Jesus.

  732. Jesus achieved

  733. unity for the church

  734. on the cross

  735. in that he reconciled

  736. us to God

  737. and he reconciled

  738. us to each other.

  739. If you read

  740. the rest of the Ephesians

  741. you'll be able

  742. to see that the big

  743. divide

  744. in the Ephesian church

  745. was between

  746. Jewish believers

  747. and Gentile believers.

  748. But Paul is clear

  749. that through Jesus

  750. the two peoples

  751. became one.

  752. Christ himself

  753. is our peace

  754. who has made us

  755. both one

  756. and has broken down

  757. in his flesh

  758. the dividing wall

  759. of hostility

  760. is how he describes

  761. it in chapter 2.

  762. Anything that would

  763. have divided us

  764. before

  765. we became Christians

  766. is abolished.

  767. We all approach

  768. God

  769. as equals

  770. through Jesus Christ.

  771. But through

  772. speaking the gospel

  773. truth to each other

  774. in love

  775. we build each other up.

  776. I think verse 16

  777. is what he's referring to

  778. by the unity

  779. of the faith.

  780. From him

  781. the whole body

  782. joined and held together

  783. by every supporting

  784. ligament

  785. grows and builds

  786. itself up in love

  787. as each part

  788. does its work.

  789. Each bit of those joints

  790. each part of the body

  791. refers to one of us.

  792. Through Christ

  793. we're all part

  794. of one body

  795. and when we minister

  796. God's word

  797. to each other

  798. speaking God's word

  799. praying with each other

  800. we build ourselves up

  801. and the body grows.

  802. Paul uses the word

  803. mature

  804. in verse 13

  805. to refer to someone

  806. who's been transformed

  807. by God's word.

  808. God's word

  809. transforms us

  810. into new people

  811. it renews our minds

  812. changes our affections

  813. and our desires.

  814. It molds us

  815. into people

  816. who reflect

  817. the goodness

  818. wisdom

  819. and love

  820. of Jesus Christ

  821. himself.

  822. Through the word

  823. of God

  824. the body

  825. of Christ

  826. that is each

  827. member of the church

  828. grows

  829. in depth

  830. and maturity

  831. but also results

  832. in the church

  833. growing in number.

  834. I don't know

  835. if you've ever seen

  836. The Da Vinci Code

  837. it's a movie

  838. that came out

  839. a decade or two ago

  840. but in that movie

  841. it's claimed

  842. that the church

  843. created the Bible

  844. for some political agenda

  845. that it was a human

  846. invention.

  847. But the reality

  848. is the other way around.

  849. The reality

  850. is the Bible

  851. created the church.

  852. Some have said

  853. that God's church

  854. is a creation

  855. of God's word.

  856. None of us

  857. would be here

  858. in this building

  859. tonight

  860. if not

  861. for the scriptures.

  862. None of us

  863. would know God

  864. and be saved

  865. if we hadn't

  866. heard and believed.

  867. The scriptures.

  868. I think one application

  869. of that is that

  870. it should give us

  871. great confidence

  872. in the scriptures

  873. when we're trying

  874. to evangelize people.

  875. How does God

  876. grow a believer

  877. to be more mature

  878. through the faithful

  879. teaching of his word?

  880. How does God

  881. grow the numbers

  882. of his church

  883. and bring new people

  884. along

  885. through the faithful

  886. teaching of his word?

  887. We don't need

  888. to be super eloquent

  889. or smart

  890. when we try

  891. to tell people

  892. about Jesus.

  893. We just need

  894. to tell them

  895. what the Bible

  896. says.

  897. Perhaps we could

  898. even ask them

  899. to read the Bible

  900. with us

  901. if they'd be interested

  902. and discuss it

  903. together.

  904. My point is

  905. that you should

  906. have confidence

  907. that there's power

  908. in God's word

  909. to save people.

  910. The other fruit

  911. that Paul mentions

  912. is stability.

  913. How does a church

  914. where each member

  915. builds each other up

  916. with the scriptures

  917. respond to false

  918. teaching

  919. and bad doctrines

  920. and the storms

  921. of culture?

  922. In verse 14

  923. Paul uses a couple

  924. of metaphors

  925. in the same sentence.

  926. Christians built up

  927. by God's word

  928. are no longer children

  929. otherwise they're

  930. no longer easily

  931. persuaded and duped.

  932. Secondly,

  933. they're no longer

  934. tossed to and fro

  935. by the waves

  936. like a ship

  937. in the storm.

  938. We speak God's word

  939. to each other

  940. in the church

  941. it will make us

  942. a stable church.

  943. A church that can

  944. endure divisions

  945. like the church

  946. in Ephesus

  947. in this letter.

  948. And one that can

  949. tackle false teaching

  950. like the church

  951. in 2 Peter.

  952. So why bother

  953. coming to church?

  954. Hopefully you can see

  955. it's through church

  956. that you can get

  957. the full transformative

  958. experience

  959. of the word of God.

  960. God gives teachers

  961. to the church

  962. who are able

  963. to equip the people

  964. in the church

  965. to know God's word.

  966. God's word

  967. that is able

  968. to save you

  969. and enable you

  970. to live a godly life.

  971. scriptures

  972. that come from God

  973. and so have

  974. his authority

  975. and glory

  976. shining through them.

  977. As you come

  978. to church

  979. and live

  980. as a community

  981. rather than

  982. individuals

  983. we build each other

  984. up

  985. with the scriptures.

  986. God will do

  987. his work

  988. through his Holy Spirit

  989. to make you united

  990. mature

  991. and stable.

  992. let's pray.

  993. Father we

  994. thank you

  995. very much

  996. for your word.

  997. Thank you

  998. that it is

  999. sufficient

  1000. to save us

  1001. and

  1002. it gives us

  1003. knowledge of you.

  1004. Thank you

  1005. that it enables us

  1006. to live godly lives.

  1007. Thank you

  1008. also for everyone

  1009. who's in this church

  1010. Father we thank you

  1011. that

  1012. church is a community

  1013. community

  1014. where

  1015. we speak

  1016. the word

  1017. to each other

  1018. and build each other

  1019. up

  1020. in love.

  1021. In Jesus name

  1022. Amen.
