Growing From Faith In Christ | Pr Matthew Chang

You're listening to a message to go from axt church. We hope this message

will light up your day. Turn with me to Second Peter chapter one.

I'm not going to go through the whole part, but just give you a

short recap. And it's important for you to get the recaps so that when

I do do some of the teachings, he will give a lot more context

as well. Second Peter Chapter one. Okay, before I read the verses,

so basically Peter was really writing to the church, and he was addressing

three very important challenges that was facing the churches. Okay, he wasn't writing

to writing to just one church, but he was the head of the church

at that time for the region, but both for Jerusalem and outside of Jerusalem

as well. And he knows that his time is up. Okay, even

if you read from verse twelve, he will say that you know that he

will likely remain no longer here and he will have to put off his tent.

You know, you know that this body that we all live in,

it's a tent. You know how many of you like to live intense?

How many of you right now are living in tense? No, right,

some of you don't even like to rent. Think about it, you'd like

to buy. Chinese people are at least Asians that we are renting out.

We feels like, hey, not so great now, But actually renting is

great. You know, it's a good financial sense. Some people say,

oh, we must insist on buying, but you don't realize that sometimes buying

you even commit the thanks twenty twenty five, thirty years of your life to

wait as well. But there's another financial discussion we're gonna have, okay,

but we're talking about ten. Ten means what something that is temporary. And

the thing is, humans don't like things that are temporary, okay, things

that were especially for the long haul. We don't like temporary things when we

have a long, big plan. You get me in right. That's why

we want certainty, we want security, we want a future, we want

to pivot. You get me in right. If always living in temporary it's

kind of feeling like there's uneasiness, there's always things shaking under the ground.

But that's the reality of our life here. You know. We one day

we will leave this tent, this physical tent, and we will meet our

maker, Okay. And that's why, you know, although it's contrary to

the world that you got to buy things, You've got to settle, you

gotta have a plan. The only real plan that we have is that what's

your plan to make the full use of our life so that you will be

a good and faithful steward. True enough, one day you're not going to

be accounting to the tax department. Your accounting will be to the Lord.

Okay, right, people said, text is certainty. I tell you,

God is certainty. God, death is Texas is certainty. Yes, death

is true is certainty. God is certainty. God will require an account for

each and every one of us. And now, so coming back here,

Peter was addressing three main challenges, and the first challenge was that the believers

were surrounded by so many cultures and false teachers who accome need to really try

to pollute, trying to distort so many teachings. And the first one was

there, they don't believe that Jesus is God. Okay, simple is that

they don't believe that Jesus is God. I mentioned this before. They doubt

because they have not seen in the eye. They rely on the eye.

If I've not seen him, if I've only heard, how can I know

that what I've heard, it's not just myth and just a gossip of wild

drunken men. Okay, it's true or not. They always be doubting one.

If I tell you something, they also a doubt one until you see

it with your own eyes. In every one of us, there is this

part of a doubting Thomas, isn't it. I tell you a preacher can

preach so many powerful things, can tell your healings. You will still doubt.

You might not show it, but you still doubt until you see with

your own eyes. So people doubt that Jesus is the son of God,

that Jesus died, and that Jesus rose again. And you will later read

on that. Peter will have to address this with two very important rebuttals.

I might might not cover it here today. Then the second thing they were

he was being challenged with us. The people were abusing the grace of God.

What do I mean by that? Means that they believe that if God

has saved us, okay, if God has were given us, God has

punched our ticket, Okay, we can do whatever we want. You know

why that happened is because at that time the apostles there were all different apostles

were writing letters. Paul was writing letter, Barnumbas was writing letter, Peter

was writing letter, Matthew was writing letter, James was writing letters. That

different people or all the apostles were writing letters and they were sending out and

then some of the churches they got whole or the letters of Paul or the

letters of Paul were like, oh, even one tier class better on us,

okay, And people were claiming, I believe him, I trust in

Paul. I don't know. I follow Barnabas, I followed Matthew, I

followed Peter. Well, Paul better because Paul is a half Roman and a

half you know, and he actually went to proper school, and the rest

never brought into proper school, so called schooler. So people were, you

know, forming clicks and gangs and you know, um, you know,

different tiers in your group as well. It's happening already, and nowadays that

we see these are and sometimes in our in churches, in infanting companies and

marketplaces. I tell you he didn't have he didn't take that long. Already,

at that time, it was happening already. People were already being you

know, segregated or you know, feeling this gap, you know, having

gaps and unnecessary gaps among the congregation as well. Okay, and because of

that they took pault letter and said, well, post letter so convincing,

Peter go and tell us that you cannot do in our still have to live,

has bought us. So it's not to live for yourself, is to live

the Lord. When you go back, you mean you have been bought with

a prize. Why do you want to go back to that former to indulge

in your former carnel things. Why would you want to do that. It

doesn't make sense. It's not freedom, you know. Peter will go on

to say, you are not free. You think by doing all these things,

by indulging with all these things, thinking you have God's ovation, you

think you are free. But no, you are not free. You are

actually a slave, slave to your former self, slaves to your sin.

If you then then the question comes, have you actually been set free?

Ah? Give me. That doesn't mean you hear the gospel you are safe.

You know, you must re see the gospel. It's not The hearing

of the gospel is the receiving of the gospel, and with the receiving of

the gospel, there is a transformation. There must be a transformation. Salvation,

people, it's not just by hearing. Salvation is a supernatural event in

your life. Okay, make no mistake, No one shot change you.

Yes, you can say a Sina's prayer. But Sina's prayer no enough,

the beginning of the confession. The journey is a supernatural event. Total conversion.

thinking you are a better version. No, you're not a better version.

You are a new creation. Some people say you're no longer Android. You

a girl comes into your life and say that I love you, you know

or boy in my life. You know you don't want to test them.

You don't make them do buy expensive things. Okay, you wait for time.

Time, do you get me right? Time is where true love is

revealed. Time. That's why marriage is so important and marriage is for life.

One to know. Stick together, stay together. You know, this

is where you know when God said that he will return, and he's looking

But they didn't bother. So they had to come back, have to to

ready to work again, had to not discipline them, have to train them.

It's so easy. How many parents are here, I mean our parents

here. Okay, leave your house for your kids for one week. Let's

do that. Okay, let's take their parents. I don't talk about my

master. Okay, Calvin, let's let's let's leave Thomas with the house for

one week. Let's see how the how goes by? You know, yeah,

like you can. You can't even fathom what will happen. Right,

Oh my goodness, you know I left my kids yesterday for two days ago

for most of the time, Thank goodness, I came back. Now everything's

is given as well, And so they don't believe that Jesus is coming back.

And so Peter had to come into step in to talk about that.

Now that's the context. Now, the main verse that I want to talk

about is actually in verse five and two verse six. Okay, so I'm

skipping ahead here, say say in verse five. But also for this very

reason, giving all diligence add to your faith, virtue, virtue, knowledge,

knowledge, self control, self control, perseverance, perseverance, godliness,

godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. Now this is I

what Peter was trying to tell them is that, hey, there are many

people who claim to know God, many people, some people from Roman and

to have their own private interpretation. And if you read through the verses,

you will see there they have their own private interpretation. And Peter will later

address about all these own private interpretation in saying that prophecies are not given are

not given for private interpretation. Prophecies are an integral element of the Bible,

so that the public may see it Yemen right, the public may say it's

meant for the public, because prophecy is God's mystery given to us. Game

right. Prophecy is God's mystery given to us. And God doesn't hide his

ministry mystery in such a way. He will give it. We will have

to see it when to discern, and sometimes we have to wait. But

you don't interpret it privately or one person at one interpretation. The other interpretation.

You know, it is for the public. If you are interpreting it,

interpreted in the public, so that you may be corrected as well.

the fear of God in your life to interpret it properly. Okay, And

the most way, the best way you can interpret the Bible is using the

I mean right, if you one part you don't understand that it's normally another

part of scripture that will help to help you understand it. Scripture interpret scripture.

Okay, scripture interpret scripture? Now what I was like, what was

that suddenly endorsed my chain of thor? Okay? Now because of you?

And there were group different groups of teachers coming around interpreting, and people were

being deceived. And when people start to hear these own private interpretations, they

start to create these war around certain groups. And when they are able to

convince one, two, three people to believe in the interpretation, is that

churches And now it's like here PJ go one group, go one group.

Imagine here we go like six seven groups. All the homes are somehow you

have your own private interpretations, and then the leaders start to have exploitive intent.

Now you now that I can sense that you believe what I say?

Can I tell still a bit more? Can I push it a bit more?

Sometimes? Hey, I want to do this? What No? Would

you like to join me? And because people believe and impressed by this person's

teaching, they also start to extend and maybe this guy can do more,

maybe his business. Who No, he's good teaching a Wow, his business

must be very good one. And trust me, it's not the case man

so exploiting. What's happening at that time as well, Peter was saying it,

these people would exploit you. Okay, did you know that during the

on how to discern whether an apostle so called apostle is an apostate who they

actually have this guideline because there were so many people infiltrating and deceiving people,

so many of them, they will tell you they will do miracles and so

sorts. There were three interesting rules. Okay, I hope I remember.

Okay. They said that if someone comes to your house and say that they

are teacher, you can welcome them, but open your eyes and see.

First thing is that if they stay more they say, like, okay,

either person stays for free for more than three days, that person is likely

an apostle. What's the huh? By three days? Then you say,

it stays for free and he doesn't want to do his share or earn to

pay for the thing, that person is apostic. It's taking advantage of you.

Whoa if. Then the other one is that if the person started preaching

to you and start to ask you for money, the person is apostate.

Suddenly, when I'm preaching here, then I look at jawan, Jawan,

game, you know you should put it into faith and work. Come on,

let's do it. There's a sign ready, you know, let's invest

in it. That's a danger. Again. The third one I can't remember.

Read really ah, the person if it's prophesizes and it doesn't come,

a different dictionary. They use the same term, but they have a different

dictionary. They can say holiness, but holiness means differently in their dictionary and

our dictionary in the center, same terms, but different dictionary means are you

cannot tell like differentiate them as Christians. They say the same things, seeing

the same songs, all the same terms are completely different dictionary. Oh,

I really say wrong a lot already. Okay, Now because of that,

you know, the paut was saying that you cannot just remain stagn on where

you are. You gotta pursue. No, your salvation and your life as

a believer has to grow, it says here for but also for this reason,

giving all diligence add to your faith. Virtue means every one of us

when we believe, the first thing that we have is faith. Faith faith.

That means you believe, you trust of all the things that you can

you can No, you can submit to the lot as a as a new

believer. It's nothing else, Not your career, no, your CV,

not your money. Is I believe, Oh my heart, I believe.

In this moment, I believe, I see and I experience the reality of

God right now all around me, and I believe than give right now.

I believe. Okay, that's where we begin. But the sad thing is

there is where people remain for the next five, ten, fifty, twenty

years, and they keep chasing that faith, experience that feeling, that circumstances

for their decision making and for everything else, for their own growth. That's

just the faith. That's why when they come here they don't experience that so

called faith, that feeling of being inspired. They can't move, they can't

grow, they can't decide, and they need someone else to pray for them.

They need a song to be you know, maybe I need to can't

use heal song. I need to use Betel song, can use Bethel song.

I need to use another song to really inspire me to make a decision.

And there are these Christians. You're well intent, but they are Christians

who are paralyzed. True, not paralyzed safe, but paralyze. Oh my

goodness, is that what God save us for. It's like you give give

birth to a child ready, but the child can do anything. Keeps stucking

kids stuff for the next fife. You're just suckling on that milk. They're

supposed to be growing, but it stays there. But Peter says, no,

you gotta add to your faith. What virtue? Now, I can't

remember what I'm gonna expand it? What is virtue? What's the one of

the first fruits in your life when you become a Christian. Right, what's

the firm One of the important qualities you should see in your life. Virtue?

What is virtue? Virtue means moral excellence. Moral excellence that means,

when you are safe, you go to the office, you shouldn't been late.

It's it's easy to say that, you know, but well, I'm

not saying that you must be perfect. You know, but in your life

there is this. You know, morality becomes clear, morality is right and

wrong. As much as you are aware that God is real, you are

also aware right now that is all right and wrong. That's why something a

lot of times people, even though you know that there is a God,

they don't want to acknowledge him. Because you know why. The moment you

acnect the acknowledge there is a God, you acknowledge that it is right and

wrong, and that affects your life. It's life changing. In all all

your belief system changes, in all morality right and row. Moral excellence.

Virtue changes your entire belief and value systems. Wow, you tell me that

it's actually a boy and a girl. Yes, there's no in between.

You don't get too defined how you like you know it will wreck people's world.

You know, and then you don't reality x people's world. You know

there's a morality and not only you understand that it is right and wrong,

there is an excellence and excellmins. What do you take one side clearly and

you commit to working on the right side. It's like driving you not hey

left? All right? You know how to Should I go beIN En or

should I go Malacca? Or both opposite sides? And just see how you

know it doesn't work that way? Why or not you committed? You goin?

you that you know. It doesn't work that way. You want not perfect,

but you're committed, Okay, not perfect, but committed. So there's

one thing that's very clear. There must be virtue, okay, the moral

excellence. And sometimes and I tell you this will lead to the next part.

The virtue means you do what is right. Okay, not because you

understand, but because you fear God and you know godege real. See,

you get me right. Sometimes you do the things are to your disadvantage,

but you do wait because it's the right thing. You get me right.

You do things, and a lot of the right things would be to your

disadvantage. Fun will cost you things. Fun. Okay, I'm going to

be very controversial here. That not controversially, but it's the right thing.

Now. Okay, boyfriend and girlfriend together not married? Should you stay together?

Hey? But stay to get the safe money. You know, I

highly earn much. You know, Wow, past the way you had to

The cost that you have to bear is between you and the Lord. But

you is to have virtue. You do things even you don't understand, but

you know it's right. You keep doing it. And when you start doing

what is virtuous, you gain knowledge, not the other way, not knowledge

than virtue, but virtue first, then knowledge. So weird, I thought,

we need knowledge to do the right thing. No, you know what

is But Bible said, you know what is right already. You don't need

to be a Bible scout to know what is already right and wrong. You

already know. It's just your will to do what is right. That's the

that's the problem. See, when you start doing then you start to gain

the knowledge. This knowledge is not talking about the knowledge of biblical knowledge.

This is a specific knowledge that it's called in the Bible. In the Greek

it's called accurate knowledge. Accurate knowledge. They can take you from one place

to another. Okay, it's not any knowledge. It's an accurate knowledge.

They can take you from one place to another. Means it's like, give

you an example, It's like, how many of you like maths? Really?

Seriously? Oh my goodness, how many of you when you do your

maths are you know when you do all the algebra or the whatever whatever it

is like all the loops and whatever thing, are you know how you will

be useful in your life? Seriously? Wow, I'm gonna use this hYP

You know when I choose my partner, I'm going to use the hypo

right before God. You don't understand God, why do I need to give

up this? Why do I need to choose this? Whine and struggle with

this? You keep doing it, doing it. Then along the line,

end of the road, not at the beginning. When you start to journey

along in life and other things start to come to add into you, distractions,

temptations, so called new ventures. There will always be things that are

good, not always bad enough. There will always be good things. You

know, maybe I can do this. It's not not bad, but they

are good. But you start to say no, you know why because you

are focused, and when you are focused, you have seen you have now

true knowledge, not just knowledge of every single thing. You have true knowledge,

you are able to say no, no, no personal knowledge, but

don't always say yes, one or no. They can't I basically say no.

They can self control their self control because they have a purpose. Self

control refers to is applied to a lot of athletes in their Greek time.

They say no to certain food because they are competing. So the self control

doesn't come mean that they have great discipline. The self control stems from their

inner need and focus and goal in life to compete at the highest level.

There's a drive, the drive that gets you to be self control, self

control, then too perseverance. Because of your self control, you're a baker

to say no. You see, personal bid has to come after you have

self control. Now, once you say no once twice, three times,

four times, five times, you start to whether I can say no.

And the more you get able to say no, you start to be I

can't hang on, I can do it, I can't endure. You can't

mean right. It doesn't happen all the way. It starts from the simple

set I can skip this meal, I can I cannot attend this, I

cannot do that. I can't start to one one one one one when you

start to endure and it's like, wow, I didn't realize I've been doing

this for one week, two week, one month, two month streamer,

and you start to see it that. You start to have a different relationship

with pain insana. You start to have a different relationship with pain and suffering.

It's no longer a bad thing anymore. It's like, it's okay.

You steel like, oh, pain is all must do something wrong with me?

You're right. We start over like that, pain and suffering must be

a dance on all. We start to endure control. You start to have

You give me right, people don't like you, It's okay. Have to

forgive, so don't do things. Don't not always people approve, People don't

always follow after you starting even maybe you're in my hundred maybe too, only

have a different relationship with setbacks. You start to have a different relationship with

disappointments, with rejections. You have been right. It's amazing. You know,

God changes us from the inside and start changing the world. We have

to say no to certain things. When you do the right things, God

I realize the key to my success to good decisions to life is always

with you. Because of that, I will not move unless you move.
