Acts 2 - The First Church - Living Our Purpose | Pr Alvin Keng

part series from X chapter two. And if you're writing notes, you can

write this down X chapter two the First Church. That's the title and the

bottom headline is living our purpose. Okay, living our purpose. So if

anybody here you're saying or asking the question, oh, what is my purpose

in life? You know, is it just to earn money? Is it

just to No? No? No, Our purpose in life is to follow

God, love God, and love people. That's the purpose. But then

there is a destiny that we all have. There's a specific destiny that a

lot plays on each and everyone. I was here, you know, and

the destiny is basically the destination. You'll get that, okay, So don't

confuse purpose and destination. Now sometimes we confuse those two things. Okay,

Purpose is purpose? What are we men to do? What is the church

men to do? What is the objective of the church. We got to

that clear, uh. And what is my destiny? My personal destiny?

You know? Well, apparently my destiny is to you know, Plungchush and

MPJ and you know, you guys, are that's my destiny? You know,

I didn't even know that when I was growing up. So there's a

purpose and a destiny that all of us have, amen. But purpose can

be quite well, I wouldn't use the word in general. That's an objective

as a believer. God has given us a purpose as we live on this

earth, because if we don't have a purpose to be on this earth,

then by the time we christian, now we just rapture that just if you

all know what the word rapture, you don't understand what repture means, just

read the Bible, then there's no reason for us to be here. Okay.

But by the mere fact that we're here, there is a reason that

God has has for us as his children. Okay, and hopefully true today's

message, we will learn a little bit about that, okay, Canna Okay,

So a recap on last part, which is the first message preach in

EDT Chapter two, verse fourteen to thirty nine. Okay. So first one

is the Holy Spirit was poured out to all men, okay. And then

they were up in the upper room and they was freeing tongues and there was

a loud sound that's a lot of people came to see what was happening.

And because it was the Pentecost, right, it was a big celebration in

the in the Jewish culture. There were a lot more people in Jerusalem,

okay, and that's why people could see. And Paul, sorry not Paul

Peters stood up and spoke, right, and he preached the first evangelistic message

he witnessed to them or what Christ has done. It's the first time every

anybody has testified, anybody besides Jesus has testified on what Christ has done.

Okay. And there was a call for repentance, right. There was no

call to just believe in Jesus. There, it was a call of repentance.

I think it's what repentance is, something as believers we need to take

really seriously. You know, there's a lot preached about acceptance now, friends,

Right, there's a lot preached about acceptance, and yes, Jesus will

accept you, but to receive eternal life, you need to repay. Right.

We need to understand that, because if we don't understand that, then

we do not have the full Gospel. We have half truth and it's not

true. Then people ask why I believe in Jesus. But then I'm still

going through my trouble. Well you repent ready or not? Are you still?

You know? You have anger problems? And then after that, you

know, you say I receive Jesus, Jesus have me, but you don't

repent of your anger, you don't forgive? Then how you're going to move

on? Gay? What I'm trying to say? No, So there is

a message of repentance that we need to remember. Right, there has to

be a change, a new you know, we become born and new,

right, a call for baptism fulfilling Matthew Chapter twenty eight, verse nineteen to

twenty A turning from your old ways to become born again, right, John

Treetree says, Jesus replied, I tell you the truth. Unless you're born

again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God. Second Corinthians five seventeen says,

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

All things have passed away. Behold, old have become new. So there

is a transformation that happens in your life. Of course, for some of

us it could be a sudden transformation. For some of us it is a

gradual transformation. So there's no judgment here. There's no judgment here. We

don't say, you know, someone come to Christ and then how come you

still no? No, no. There is a gradual transformation, and there

is sometimes the Lord is good with us. There is a transformation, but

there has to be repentance. You'll catch that. There has to be repentance.

There's a lot of message. Pre sure, I now got no repentance.

One, guys, it's just acceptance on me. It's just Jesus will

love you no matter what, even if you're still following it always us.

Yes, Jesus still love you. There's a correct message. But to receive

Christ as your savior, you need to repent. I don't really hear much

messages like that. Now. I hear a lot of acceptance message which we

like to hear, but it doesn't result if any life change. It doesn't

result in any transformation. And then when we're still stuck in our own ways

and still suffering, we wonder why, and then we say, Jesus don't

work. No, Jesus works. Is are we fully committed to him?

Amen? And then there was a promise of the Holy Spirit. That's power,

Holy Spirit power. So today we're going to talk about X Chapter two,

verse forty to forty seven. So can you turn your bibles to that

X Chapter two, verse forty to forty seven. If you do not have

your bibles, I want to let you know that we will encourage you to

buy a bible. Okay. I know it's a bit hard to get bibles

now in uh uh in this place, right, but I think it can

go to Canaanland to get okay, because your phone now will run our battery

So X chapter two, verse forty let's go to that and with many

other words, he testified and exalted them, saying, be saved from this

perverse generation. Be saved from this perverse generation. Let me ask you a

question, is this generation perverse or not? Guys? Has been happening,

it's be saved from this perverse generation. I think the message has not changed.

The message has not changed. Right, These are things we don't like

to hear, but it's true. Just go on on Facebook. There's a

lot of treashure there that specifically targets you. Last time, I have to

look No, now you don't have to look on. All you need to

do is click on one picture and then everything the next few minutes and all

you will get everything. Not easy to live a life of holiness in this

day and age. Be saved from this perverse generation. But it is continue.

Then, those who gladly received this word were baptized, and the day

about three thousand souls who added to them. And they continue steit fastly in

apostles, doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of brain, and in prayers

came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

Now all who believe were together, and all had things in common,

and sold their possessions and goods and divided them among all as anyone had need

so nothing. So continuing daily we want to call in the temple, and

breaking bread from house to house. They ate their food with gladness and simplicity

of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the

Lord added to the church daily. Those who are being safe and they live

happily. Ever after. I wish they had that line at the end and

then we can close the book feel good. But no, no, after

that, a lot nasty things happened to the believers. No, some were

cut in half, son in two, crucified for their faith. Today Sunday,

so happy. What you're going to talk about? All these nonsense.

We're gonna talk about all these things. I feel so sad. Now I'm

gonna smile. Friends. This is the truth. This is the truth.

Why am I sharing? You know, if I were to go back to

the part, one of the reason why I am on this series is because

all of us here need to understand deeper our faith. And if we don't

understand our faith deep enough, no wonder. Don't be surprised that you're easily

sweet by words of men and news out there that you hear, because you

don't know who your God is. You don't know your faith. You know,

we come to this place where we listen to words and that we like.

No, we need to know our faith. We need to understand the

entirety of our faith. We need to understand the purpose of the Holy Spirit

in our lives. We need to understand. Why does the church say all

there and all so that the church can get more more members, so that

we can bigger guys. That's not the point. There are people suffering and

dying out there. There are people going through life happily, enjoying life with

a christless eternity. And here we are, here, we are knowing the

truth. What are we doing about it? So I've come to this not

you know, understanding through my own faith that the more understanding a believer has,

the better. The more understanding. I'm not talking about information. Now.

You can have a lot of information, but you don't understand one.

But when you have an understanding of the Bible and understanding of your faith,

a true understanding, you will not be shaken, right, You'll not be

shaken. You will be stayed fast. You know, no matter what you

see. I always joke with Daniel because we're seeing a lot of interesting things

on you know, the reels about churches and how they are doing different things.

America also doing something. I think we do some of the things here.

Something you'll lived Africa so or even better Africa. Okay, do you

know that Daniel told me three hour four hours is normal there. I tell

I feel the Lord leading me somewhere else. The Lord is leading me to

method. That's why we need to understand the word I always encourage. Go

back and read your Bible, Go back and go deeper in the world.

Go deeper and understanding, not just information. Right, go back and understanding.

Amen, So what happened? Peter testified. He testified many other things

that Jesus did. He exhorted them to be safe right from this perverse generation.

Stop it. Stop your bad habits, stop practicing the things you shouldn't

practice right, stop it. We highly hear these guys. Things come from

just right. Stop it. Guys. Stop stop hanging out with girls.

watching weird pictures online, guys, stop it. Okay, I'm not gonna

pointless. I will ask them what is their values? What do you believe

in? Because that would tell me what you do? Right? So we

got to think about that. Same with my kids. I'm not just giving

rules to them. I want to understand or I want at least want to

pass on value to them because I won't be there for every single situation,

and in the future there will be different situations they did do. If you

know, if I just give them a set of rules, right and they

don't know how to decide right, Wow, next time you won't be Instagram

around? Why these people don't engage in all these things? They're curious wondering

why right three thousand was saying the church started, they were really one hundred

and twenty people, and then three thousand, So three hundred hey, sorry,

the believers do? So, if you didn't know X Church, we are

called X Church because we want to go back into the Book of X and

be like the church in the Book of X. Not the reason right,

Love has been taken our contexts, Acceptance have been taken our contexts and

then people go through crazy. You know, the things are happening now in

the world crazy, right, But you see when things are crazy, Jesus

is still king. So although I'm saying crazy, guys, you want to

know what your should do as believers. You should speak truth, don't pull

back, push forward, push forward because the truth will set people free.

That's why we should do as believers. Amen. So what did the believers

do? Let's do a be of a study. What did the believers to

believers practicing any of this? Because the church is an organized entity, okay

so we make the church basically. Sometimes I see people like to have

a separation you and us, you know, the church, and me like

like, I'm like, like, I don't know, like different paths.

No, I thought we're all together in Christ apparently not Lamingen. That's that

separation you and us? You know, why do you do that? Actually,

if I understand the Bible correctly, the church is all of us.

Yes, maybe for organization and stake, it's easy we come here, you

know. And of course building something building building a group is not easy.

Building culture in a group is not easy, right because different people got different

background, different understanding, different except that's why there has to be certain things

we practice as ex church. Get you'll get that right, And of course

if you don't like, you got all options out there. But it's our

faith just about practicing things we like and don't like, or it's about faith

following the Bible. I just want to make the main thing, the main

thing I guys. Okay, right, So my question this morning is before

we look at another church or another place, ask ourself this question. Am

I practicing any of this as a believer? Because this is basic? You

know? Am I doing it? See the church organizing a prayer service in

homesa to encourage more believers? Are it is just I don't know, I

don't know what I use this word. It's just an excuse, right to

get you all to pray more? Is as a program, guys, I

can do many exciting programs. And let's do prayer behind the you know,

prayer at the poll, you know, flack prayer. Let's do that all

prayer. I can do a lot by all program. What is the program

for is to encourage me, as a believer to practice just that. Do

you know that if all of us here practice, well, we don't organize

any program. Well, let's stress of you man. But why why do

we do all these things? Is so that we can participate. That's the

whole idea of it. So don't we deceived. Don't don't run after events.

Don't run after just because this band is coming. Don't run after that.

Don't run after that. No why we do what we do. No

matter where you're at. If you practice this, you're okay. You'll catch

do? Can you do this? Say yes? First? Before you I

I encourage you to plan a church because every believer can go read the book.

You shall surely rebuild your neighbor and not best scene because of him. You

don't understand what means meaning the Bible. God really know that we will stamp

on eah other stones. So when that happens, we can talk to each

other. We can quote unquote rebuilt say can you please don't don't do that?

Cannot mean don't do that al Minyan, right, but we're still friends.

But don't best seen besting means what minihan, don't do that. I

don't want friend you anymore. Yeah, they're even easier mean, don't even

I think the first question is do we see these people as our people

greatest. And he said, Jesus said to him, you shall love the

Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all

your mind. That is the first and greatest commandment. We all agree that

right, But I think the second a very difficult for us. And the

second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these

two commandments hang all the law and the prophet ya. You'll get what that

means. Everything we do, everything, we practice, everything that all the

law hangs on these two commandments. If you can get this too right in

your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price

it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you

conceived this thing in your heart? You have not liked to men but to

God. Then anonized, hearing these words, fell down and breathast laught.

So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. And the young

man arose and wrapped him up and came down and buried him. Now it

is about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had

happened, And Peter answered her, tell me whether you sold the land for

so much? She said, yes, for so much. Then Peter said

to her, how is it that you agreed together to test the sprait of

the Lord. Look the feet of those who have buried your husband. Eye

this door, and they will carry her out. Then immediately she fell down

at his feet and breathed her lass. And the young man came in and

found her day and carried her out, buried her by her husband. So

great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Okay, I don't have much time to unpack this with you, but I'll

just share one or two points. Number one, we need to have the

fear of the Lord in our hearts, because if not, we will do

things to our fellow brother and sister and to the church with no fear of

God. That's very dangerous. That's very dangerous. So you must remember we

fear God. At the end of the day. God is the wana that

has made this plan. Church. Idea came from Him. He didn't just

come from men. Men come and add more things to it. Okay,

to make it more interesting, to make it more The word that people like

to use is relevant. I don't really like that word. I think Jesus

is relevant. I don't think we need to add anything else to make it

relevant. Right, But we got to have God's fear in our hearts.

Amen, Right, we got to have God's here in the house. Just

need to be careful with that, okay. And of course the other commandment

that Jesus gave is to be a witness for Christ and to spread the good

news. But not just to spread the good news, but to make disciples,

baptizing them and teaching them. And Christ will be with us. Okay.

So friends, just a summary, what is our role? Well,

I summarize in these five points. Live out our faith and keep following Jesus.

Okay. First point, no matter where you are, no matter what

you're doing, no matter what situation you are, no matter how much time

you come and join church, live out your faith and keep following Jesus.

Okay. First point. Second to second thing, be plugged into a church,

a community of believers. So right now you're in PJ. If you're

here and you have not caught this home yet, my encouragement to you is

plug yourself in. Don't be a pure warmer anymore. Plug yourself in because

God has the church for a reason, right, you know. Plut yourself

in, be involved, be connected, get to know the leaders, right.

And then third point is self God and Self His people. And when

I say self God, it may not necessarily be oh, come on stage.

No, No, it can be any other thing in terms of serving

God serving his people. Okay, share good news with those who does not

know yet of Christ Love? Are we doing that? This one I meet

is the hardest thing. I'm also very difficult, but I can tell you

the Holy Spirit has stirred my heart to be bolder in this so much so.

The first step that has happened is that I've been praying for people.

for her and I prayed that God will bless her God world, you know.

is powerful. Discipleship is working with someone else. You don't need to be

officially in a church. Don't need to. You can disciple. People want

parents. You're discipling your kids. Ready, that's what you're doing. You

are discipling. It should be you discipling them, not the other way around.

Now, So disciple your children, Disciple them, show them the way,

you know, teach them right and observe things that Christ taught us.

And discipleship is not easy because you're dealing with people. People are stubborn.

People don't want to go where you want to leave them. You know that's

the truth. So we ask who is spirit to help us? Anything else

that exalts itself against this is a distruction, friends, It is a distraction.

True distraction derails us from purpose, from the purpose, and that God

has seen nether for us as a church and his children. So let's not

get distracted, so willingly cannnot Let's not get distracted so willingly and not take

up our responsibility. Let me just bring it out a big clear for us

to understand in the context of our church. What is our church vision?

To see a community of faith, hope and love that shines the way,

truth and life of Jesus Christ until the whole earth is filled with the knowledge

of the glory of the Lord as the waters covered the sea. That is

our vision as a church. We're big words are how do we do this

paseerving well by making disciples? That is our mission. Why Jesus ask us

to make disciples, you know, not make meny peace, make disciples to

follow, baptizing them in the name of the furthest and the Holy Spirit,

and encouraging him to observe all that Christ has taught us through his word.

How do we make disciples? And this is why I soologically asked you do

this true church planting. Now that's how And church planting is a mandate.

So I tell you, I caution youkay, I might scare some of you're

here. This is not the first last time XPJ gonna plant our church XBU

is not the last time. There's gonna be more. My question is are

you ready because God will use you, not me, ah not I know

power and God will use you to plan a church. That's why he will

faithor growth? How do we plan true small groups? Our method? Do

you know that every single homes is like a church? It is you can

can qualify to be a church based on your numbers, because that's how big

That's what we're all involved in. Why because there has to be progression

in our faith. Jesus didn't come to die in a crosser so that we

can be a believer and then sit in Sunday service for until we die.

You know there is an active faith that's happening now. Either your heart is

stirred, either you will get challenged, will grow in. Your maturity is

constant, it is never stagnant and that's why we go through trouble, friends,

That's why we go through challenges so that it is an opportunity for us

to overcome and to grow. But if we don't take the challenge, well,

we are gonna be discouraged and we're going to give up. And the

next time there's an opportunity to step up, we will pull back and say

it's okay, someone else will do it. It is your choice and nobody's

gonna force you. Maybe through the message you will get nudged a little bit,

but nobody's gonna fors you. So my encouragement to all of us this

morning is that if you really want to experience the fullness of Christ in your

life, step up and participate. Because whether you participate or not, we're

still gonna do the things we're gonna do. That's the reality. But if

you're feeling this sense in your life that it's like, oh, is there

something more? There is? That is Christ. There is something more to

life. There's more than us. There is, But we need to love

God with all heart. We've gotta love others as ourselves. Amen. We
