  1. You're listening to a message to go from acts church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. I've been teaching a series. I believe I've shed and

  4. taught a few from the series from the Book of Efficients.

  5. Of course, our team this year is still that all

  6. may know and we will continue with that. But I

  7. don't know where I stop at. But I'm just going

  8. to go to where I am right now. The Subang

  9. plan is the one that probably gets to hear me

  10. teach it a bit more systematically. But ephicients one, two, three, four, five, six,

  11. know there are six chapters I've taught. I believe in

  12. umpire at least one and two, Chapter one and chapter two.

  13. I've arrived at chapter five, and I want to talk

  14. about chapter five because I feel this is something that

  15. is important for us to again go back to God's

  16. word and understand what is it that He's teaching us.

  17. And the start of chapter five was one whole sermon

  18. on his own. It was basically teaching us how we

  19. should walk our lives as individual believers. And if you

  20. look at and if you have time, you can go

  21. back to the scriptures. I'm not going to focus on

  22. the first part because, like I said, that was something

  23. that I shed about a month and a half ago.

  24. But it's about how we walk as individuals. Basically, how

  25. do we walk as individuals? From the start of chapter

  26. five in the Book of Ephesians, you see Paul actually

  27. exhorting and teaching and encouraging the people. Firstly, you got

  28. to imitate Christ. That's the word that you will see.

  29. The first eye that I taught is to imitate Christ.

  30. The means follow after Jesus. This is again to do

  31. with your own personal walk, your own personal journey. And

  32. then the next thing that you will see is that

  33. he talks about being a light of the world, allowing

  34. the light of Jesus, the light of God, to be

  35. upon your life so that you can shine in the

  36. world in which you are living in. And so basically

  37. the next eye that I thought the church was to

  38. be to illuminate. So not only are we called to imitate,

  39. but we're also called to illuminate, to shine. Okay, very important.

  40. And then the third thing you see is this is

  41. actually a word that sometimes have a different meaning in

  42. today's world, is basically being intoxicated. Okay, this world is

  43. always intoxicated with the spirit of this world. If you're

  44. intoxicated with the spirit of this world, transistor, you want

  45. to walk straight, you will walk life and rite. But

  46. if you are intoxicated with the Holy Spirit, it's a

  47. different thing. And this is where Paul is telling us,

  48. be intoxicated with the Holy Spirit, be filled with the

  49. Holy Spirit. And so the three eyes that you see

  50. at the first part of chapter five is essentially talking

  51. about look, imitate Christ, allow the light of God to

  52. illuminate through your life, and always be fully intoxicated, feel

  53. with the Holy Spirit as you walk this individual journey.

  54. How we should walk in the spirit is very, very

  55. important because all this now leads to the next part

  56. of the scripture. The next part of the scripture is

  57. basically talking about how we live with one another. Remember

  58. I mentioned, I think I mentioned this time and time

  59. again to the church that Efficiens is a very practical book.

  60. That's the first part of the scriptures. The first three chapters,

  61. which is very a lot of principles are being sad.

  62. The next three, four, five, and six is basically more pragmatic.

  63. So you have the teaching, the doctrine, and then now

  64. you have the doing part. So this is a doing

  65. how do we live our lives? So the first part

  66. of chapter five is how do we live our individual lives?

  67. And then now it's going into the next part, which

  68. is I believe telling us how we're going to live

  69. and co exists with one another. Okay. And so I'm

  70. going to be starting from verse twenty one of chapter five,

  71. and as we go through it, you'll be like thinking,

  72. I'm going to a family pre marriage course with all

  73. of you all because it talks about marriage, it talks

  74. about children parenting, and then it goes on to talk

  75. about employer employee relationship. But it all ties together, and

  76. the basis of it is verse twenty one. It says

  77. this and further submit to one another out of reverence

  78. for Christ. Okay, so remember that verse twenty one of

  79. chapter five sis and further, So this is moving on

  80. from walking your individual life. Now it says, and further

  81. submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Because

  82. we don't live isolated lives. We don't live by ourselves.

  83. We live amongst each other. And that's why I simply

  84. just entitle the message love life and livelihood. Because marriage

  85. is love. Then when you love one another, usually life

  86. comes out, which is your kids and then after you

  87. got the workler okay, livelihood Okay. So that's it. So

  88. first question to ask yourself is this ever wondered, what

  89. is the ideal form of government? I think it's an

  90. important question because there are more and more people living

  91. in this world, and that's the reality of it. It's

  92. not always been the easiest trying to govern and trying

  93. to coexist with one another. Because some people will tell

  94. you that I believe we need greater control, more control

  95. is needed as more people grow. And then there are

  96. others who say, oh no, I think greater freedom is needed.

  97. And so the question is how do you find that balance? Basically,

  98. the balance of law and liberty, the balance of form

  99. and freedom. I know today now meets different ones from

  100. different countries, and not everyone lives in this kind of

  101. environment that we have in Malaysia and Malaysia. I believe

  102. it's fairly safe, it's fairly structured. But some of us

  103. come from different kinds of governments and different kinds of systems.

  104. But the world is basically divided into two kinds of

  105. governance structure. One we call democracy, which is the one

  106. that we live in. The other one, maybe you can

  107. loosely call them dictatorships, which many others also under. And

  108. so democracy basically just believes that every person has a

  109. right to have a say in the government. Right, sounds familiar. Right,

  110. that's what we all think we have every time we vote.

  111. We have the right of the vote. Okay, Sannia, I

  112. can't remember the political suffrage? Is that what? The right

  113. to vote? And people can choose to change their government

  114. whenever they feel like doing it. Okay. Then you have

  115. dictatorship where people are not free to choose. The government

  116. in place decides what is going to happen. Okay, And

  117. I can tell you this right from the start. Both

  118. have got problems. But let's focus on the problem with

  119. democracy since most of us live under this system, or

  120. if we don't live under this system, we hope to

  121. be able to live under this system. When everybody is

  122. actually trying to have their say, and everybody is trying

  123. to decide what is right, and then everybody is trying

  124. to govern, there's going to be many conflicts of interests

  125. and ideals, and sooner or later, even in democracy, it

  126. can lead to problems. That is the reality, because we

  127. are always fighting. I want my say, democracy is that right. No,

  128. I want to have my say what we want. The

  129. rights of the minorities, the rights of the majority is

  130. the rights of every Everyone has got their own rights,

  131. and so they're always fighting in this sense and Verse

  132. twenty one is actually God's answer to the question what

  133. is the ideal form of human government? It's actually a

  134. combination of leadership and responsibility. Again, remember these towards leadership

  135. and responsibility. See, God has a plan for human government.

  136. Whenever more than one person has to live together, God

  137. has a plan for the group, whether it's a big

  138. group or a small group. May be as small as

  139. husband and wife. It may be as small as parent

  140. and children. It may be as small as employer employee.

  141. Or it may be a group of millions in which

  142. you need to govern, or even billions. Let's just say

  143. if you're in China or India. The plan is that

  144. some should be responsible for the leadership of the others,

  145. and that both should be responsible to Christ. Does that

  146. make sense again, I'll repeat that some should be responsible

  147. for the leadership of the others and that both should

  148. be responsible to Christ. It is neither a democracy, nor

  149. is it a dictatorship. It is actually a combination of

  150. the best of both. You see, democracy in which we

  151. all live in does not like that one bit. It

  152. doesn't like it because the word submit has become a

  153. little bit of a bad word actually, because democracy is

  154. like everyone must be said, free from submitting or from

  155. being subject to something or someone. Yet God says, if

  156. you're ever going to live together, somebody has got to

  157. be submitted or be subject to someone else, otherwise you

  158. will have chaos and a breakdown of human society. That

  159. is the reality of it. But the submission must go

  160. with reverence. The respect must be there as well as

  161. the subordination. Very important for us to understand that only

  162. then will you get that perfect balance. And he must not.

  163. It's actually a reverence and not for the person to

  164. him you are submitted to, but reverence for Christ who

  165. has delegated his authority to that person. It's a big difference.

  166. That's why sometimes when you read some scriptures, especially in Romans,

  167. you see the reminder to submit to the government of

  168. the day regardless. You know, sometimes we're liked is cruel

  169. and white, corrupted, cruel, don't think about his people, very selfish.

  170. But yet we're actually called to respect, submit to them

  171. in respect of God who put them or allowed them

  172. to be in place. There's a whole difference, and so

  173. we must always be reminded it is reverence not for

  174. the person that we are submitted to, but reverence to Christ,

  175. who has delegated his authority. And you will see the

  176. same pattern of governance in all relationships from the macro

  177. level in how world governments are governed in that sense

  178. all the way to the micro levels of your family

  179. and your vocation. You'll see it, and I teach from it.

  180. Even now as we move into verses twenty two to thirty,

  181. how you've ben be like, huh now talking about marriage

  182. and yeah, because that's how it goes. Verse twenty one says, further,

  183. submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. And

  184. then verse twenty two goes on to say this something

  185. that's very familiar to those who are married. Let's read it, okay.

  186. Verse twenty two says, four, wives, this means submit to

  187. your husband as to the Lord, for the husband is

  188. the hate of his wife. As Christ is the head

  189. of the church, he is the savior of his body,

  190. the church, as the church submits to Christ. So you

  191. wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands,

  192. this means love your wives just as Christ love the Church.

  193. He gave up his life for her to make her

  194. holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God's words.

  195. He did this to present her to himself as a

  196. glorious church, without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead,

  197. she will be holy and without fault. In the same way,

  198. husbands ought to love their wives as they love their

  199. own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually

  200. shows love for himself. No one hates his own body,

  201. but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares

  202. for the Church, and we are members of his body.

  203. And so here is when Paul applies this principle to marriage. Okay,

  204. the principle that I just mentioned just now. The main

  205. problem is always selfishness causes people to lose respect for

  206. one another as soon as and soon after that, okay,

  207. as soon as the selfishness, as soon as selfishness kicks in,

  208. you will start talking about rights instead of talking about responsibilities. Okay,

  209. I want us to remember these two words. So rights

  210. and responsibilities. As soon as you use the word right

  211. of yourself, you have essentially stepped out of God's plan.

  212. As soon as you talk about responsibility of yourself, you

  213. are essentially stepping into God's plan. And the Bible doesn't

  214. speak anywhere of the rights of wives and the rights

  215. of husbands. It doesn't, I assure you. It speaks of

  216. the responsibilities of both to one another. It's a big difference,

  217. and we are going to look at this pattern. First

  218. of all, Paul takes the individual responsibility of the wife

  219. and then the husband, and this is how it exists

  220. as a unique and so I want you to notice

  221. first that both have responsibilities, husbands and wife. Some of

  222. you may be like, I'm not married, I'm not bothered. No,

  223. be bothered, because if you are going to be married,

  224. then you will understand this. I pray. If not, then

  225. it will help you understand even how marriage should look

  226. like for your own parents. Even Okay, so notice this

  227. both have responsibilities. But I also want you to notice

  228. this both have different responsibilities. Today there's always this confusion

  229. about the varying roles of male and female, as if

  230. difference of responsibility means difference of status and of value.

  231. It does not. In God's side, husbands and wife. Husband

  232. and wife are of equal value equal status. They are

  233. both sinners in need of grace. That's the truth, that's

  234. the reality of it. But they are not of the

  235. same function, and that is an entirely different thing different.

  236. According to God's word, when two people get married, two

  237. people are becoming one person. The word one is actually

  238. very important in the marriage service. It is not too

  239. going forward together. It is actually two becoming one together,

  240. one unique. So before they are married, they have two

  241. persons with two hates and two bodies. Okay, after their

  242. marriage very important to reduce hit count and BodyCount because

  243. if you have a two hatted marriage, it's scary. It's

  244. not like a monster like that. But if you have

  245. a two body and no hate, it's like a monster

  246. with no direction. Are scary. So reduce hate count, reduce

  247. body count. And therefore, when we get married, we are

  248. no longer two people with our individual rights, but we

  249. are one person with separate responsibilities within the marriage. Do

  250. you see that now? So from now on there is

  251. one hit and one body making one person. The husband

  252. is to be the hate and the wife is to

  253. be the body. In that kind of partnership, they will

  254. be able to make one new person who of you

  255. thinks sometimes or the heat is supreme, and therefore he

  256. can say and do whatever he wants. Yeah. Like I said,

  257. you try having a hit with no body, then there's

  258. no body. Yeah. And if you try having a body

  259. with no hate, it's yeah, heitless. So the varying response

  260. stabilities are the wives treat your husband as your hate,

  261. and then husbands treat your wives as your body. And

  262. then you will discover together what God's will is for

  263. the marriage. And here's the big challenge. The wives have

  264. to imagine that they are married to Jesus and behave accordingly.

  265. It's a tall order. Actually, it's not me that says

  266. you know, it's actually the scriptures. It says wives be

  267. subject or submit to your husband as to the Lord.

  268. So basically a wife should imagine her that it was

  269. Jesus who proposed to them. It's Jesus that they fell

  270. in love with. How would you feel towards him? Now?

  271. I know sometimes we may say my husband not Mary

  272. christ like, but it is still your duty to behave

  273. as if he were Christ. That is the right attitude

  274. to have for a wife. You have even got another

  275. standard actually to look upon, and the scriptures actually say

  276. look at the church. How does the church behave towards

  277. Christ is the question that we have to ask because

  278. in that analogy of Church and Jesus is always the

  279. same thing as a marriage. They always draw that picture. No,

  280. Christ is the groom, the Church is the Brian. And

  281. so there's another standard for us to actually refer to

  282. and allude to. See. Christ's plan is always that the

  283. leadership in the marriage should be in the husband, as

  284. it is always Jesus' leadership over the Church, and not

  285. the other way around. Not the Church leads Jesus, that

  286. Jesus leads the Church. Amen, we can all agree. And

  287. that's why sometimes when I do pre marriage counseling, I

  288. will ask couples, I will ask the wife, are you

  289. willing to live for your husband? Because the Church was

  290. willing to live for Christ. And of course the husband's

  291. got even a taller order, you know, basically, because I

  292. will get to it, they will always be asked whether

  293. are you willing to die for the Church? Are you

  294. willing to die for your wife? Because I tell you what,

  295. nothing spoils a marriage so quickly as a wife who

  296. has come to look down on her husband instead of

  297. learning to look up to her husband. Again, this has

  298. nothing to do with status or value. This is responsibility.

  299. So ladies, if you're searching for the right men in

  300. your life, find a man that you can look up to,

  301. not a man whom you think needs improving, Because I

  302. tell you what, all men need improving, myself included. No

  303. one is perfect. Every wife will say amen loudly. Sorry, Josh,

  304. she stay quite loud. But a wife shouldn't start off

  305. by saying I'm the one to do it. So as

  306. we go into a relationship, I'm the one that's going

  307. to improve this person, rather say I'm going to marry

  308. this person because I look up to him, I respect him,

  309. and I want him to lead me. That's why it's

  310. so important, even prior to getting married, when you get

  311. to know one another. That is the dynamics of the relationship.

  312. This is for wives. And if we think all tough

  313. on them and the men have got no other responsibilities.

  314. Sometimes sometimes we think that way, you know, but I

  315. want to tell you the teachings of Christ. And therefore

  316. whatever Paul is saying here in the scriptures is it's

  317. counterculture even for that time, because some people say, oh no, whyever,

  318. Paul's teaching it maybe applies back then back then. No,

  319. now this cannot now everyone equal equal in everything, responsibility

  320. rights everything, or no. Back then, actually husbands in a

  321. way got no responsibilities because sometimes wife will almost treat

  322. like shattle or chattle. I don't know how you pronounce

  323. that property. That's why when you talk about employer employee,

  324. is the same thing. White slavery was so rampant back

  325. in those days. It's the same thing because people are

  326. treated as property. Is so basically, if I'm the boss,

  327. I'm the leader. There's no responsibility on me. But Paul

  328. is now saying, hey, husbands, you have responsibility. So I'm

  329. telling you he is even counterculture even for those times.

  330. If we think that, oh, it cannot be applied today, no,

  331. I'm telling you it can be applied. It should be

  332. applied today as it was also applicable back then. And

  333. he's now saying, Okay, I'm going to tell the husbands

  334. what they knew, what they need to do, because it's

  335. not only those who follow who have responsibilities, those who

  336. lead have responsibilities as well. Actually, a lot more is

  337. actually said to the husband. If you read more words

  338. were recorded to the husbands than to the wives, because

  339. husbands have a greater responsibility because they are called to lead.

  340. And everywhere in scripture, whenever there is a leadership calling

  341. upon a person, there's a heavier responsibility more things. I see.

  342. That's why, sonless, you'll find yourself braying for double portion. Right, God,

  343. give me double portion of your annoying thing. What does

  344. that mean? No, that's that's that's basically what's given to

  345. the first bond, two portions. Not so that they can

  346. amass extra for themselves and keep it for themselves and

  347. so that, oh, this is nice to have extra. No,

  348. it's basically one portion for you, one portion to take

  349. care of all the other people around you. That is

  350. the responsibility of the first bond, the oldest child. And

  351. so when we seek for a double portion, basically you

  352. are saying, God, I need help to fulfill the bigger responsibility,

  353. the bigger leadership role that you have given to me. So, husbands,

  354. this is your responsibility. This is these are your duties.

  355. If your wives are going to imagine that they are

  356. married to Christ, then you got to help make their

  357. imagination not so difficult. Right, It's the truth. Sound the

  358. wise laughing, I mean Joe's. In other words, they are going.

  359. If they are going to submit to you, it must

  360. be because you, yourself, are first submitted to Christ. If

  361. the church should model herself on the if the wife,

  362. sorry should model herself on the church's attitude to Christ,

  363. the husband should model himself on Christ's attitude to the Church.

  364. That means, in one word, love, Because a wife doesn't

  365. mind submitting to one who loves her deeply. That is

  366. the reality of it. And it must be the kind

  367. of love that Christ has for all of us. And

  368. I will tell you what kind of love that is,

  369. because it's actually listed in the scriptures. The first kind

  370. of love is basically a love that's prepared to make sacrifices,

  371. even the ultimate one. That is why the question is asked,

  372. are you willing to die for your wife? Just as

  373. Christ was willing to die for the Church. If a

  374. wife feels that her husband loves her that much, I

  375. assure you she will submit to your leadership. The second

  376. thing is this about Jesus's love is known as a

  377. cleansing love. Basically, it's a kind of love when you

  378. love the person, you leave the person better off than

  379. she was before. That is the kind of love that

  380. Jesus has for us. It left us better after his

  381. love was introduced into our lives, a cleansing love. And

  382. then the third thing you realize is is a kind

  383. of love that nourishes and cherish. That's why the analogy

  384. of the body is used. Of course, sometimes in today's

  385. world when we talk about the body, we abuse it

  386. alf the time, life whever we want, and drink whatever

  387. we want. Don't don't do that, think of it. That's

  388. why it says love your wife as you love your

  389. own body. Some people will be like, I don't love

  390. my own body, and I want no, but yeah, come back,

  391. come back, come back to how we should be caring

  392. for our bodies, because really we are given stewardship over

  393. our own bodies. And trust me, someone who feels and

  394. knows that his body is something that is it has

  395. to be taken care of, then you will naturally nourish

  396. and cherish it. You'll feed it well, and you will

  397. take good care of it. That's the reality. That's the

  398. kind of love that is mentioned, and that is the

  399. responsibility of the husband to love their wives. Sometimes we think, okay,

  400. love Jessey, I love you enough no, trust me. Love

  401. must always be in action. It's not just in words.

  402. It's in both words and deeds. And your wives will know,

  403. and you will know whether you love your wives in

  404. whether they submit to you or not. That's the reality

  405. of it. But this is God's pattern for society, whether

  406. it is in a large group of nations, or in communities,

  407. or even in a compact. You need, such as marriage,

  408. be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  409. Make sense. Let's move on. Let's move on to the family. Okay,

  410. And it's actually Ephesients chapter six. So we have done

  411. you chapter five. Now we are moving on to chapter six.

  412. I think I got it wrong on the slights, but

  413. I'm gonna read chapter six versus one to four, and

  414. it says this. It automatically moves on to this children.

  415. Now it's talking about family life. Okay, children, obey your

  416. parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is

  417. the right thing to do. Honor your father and mother.

  418. This is the first commandment with the promise. If you

  419. honor your father and mother, things will go well for

  420. you and you will have a long life on the earth. Fathers,

  421. do not provoke your children to anger by the way

  422. you treat them, rather bring them up with the discipline

  423. and instruction that comes from the lawd Okay, I'm not

  424. making this up. Go back reading really, so, we're going

  425. to look at what God's pattern is now for family,

  426. and the same principles apply. You will see leadership and

  427. you will see loyalty. Same thing when you submit to

  428. one another out of reverence for Christ. It is essentially

  429. talking about leadership and loyalty. You see, you cannot run

  430. a family as a democracy in which everybody in the

  431. family has got equal vote and equal say. Okay, parents

  432. in the house, you try doing that. No, let your

  433. one year old to your Actually, society has allowed that

  434. to happen nowadays. Let the little kids decide what they want. Ah,

  435. how four year old five year olds? No? When I

  436. was living in the UK, Really, a five year old

  437. can decide today, I want to wake up and I

  438. don't think I want to be a boy. I want

  439. to be a girl. And parents are saying, sure, if

  440. my five year old decides that he wants now to

  441. be a girl, then we will identify her as a girl.

  442. How is that possible that you allow a child who

  443. is a child to make choices like that without giving guidance, discipline,

  444. and instruction. So you can't You can't run a family

  445. as a democracy, but neither can you run it as

  446. a dictatorship where you treat children like as do their

  447. machines and robots. That's not the way. You see. The

  448. pattern is again leadership and loyalty, and we are going

  449. to look at the kind of loyalty that children should

  450. have and the kind of leadership that parents should exercise.

  451. It's important because the Bible does not talk about rights

  452. of children and rights of parents. Again, this is a reminder.

  453. It talks about the responsibilities of the child and the

  454. responsibilities of the parents. Then you build a happy family

  455. for God. Someone words may be saying, oh, I don't

  456. have kids, so it doesn't really apply to me. It

  457. doesn't matter. You are all a child of someone, and

  458. you are all children of God, and so we still

  459. have our responsibilities as children. And so within the biblical framework,

  460. children will have one thing that many of them missed,

  461. and that is security. If children do not feel safe

  462. and secure within a framework, you will have what is

  463. chaos anarchy. There's no order, there's no pattern, and that's

  464. why a lot of things in bahasa they call it.

  465. It's everywhere because it's not structured. But there is a

  466. biblical framework. And let's begin with the framework of the

  467. family as seen from the children's side. Okay, this is

  468. the kind of loyalty the children have towards their parents.

  469. That is their responsibility. And they are told too things. Okay,

  470. two things are told to them. One is concerned with

  471. their actions and the other one is concerned with their attitude. Again,

  472. this applies to all of us because we are all children.

  473. Your action and your attitude basically obedience and reverence. You

  474. can have one without the other, but God's will is

  475. for the child to have both. I will explain. Okay,

  476. I don't know whether you remember this story and made

  477. twenty one. There was an owner of a vignyard and

  478. he had two sons. Okay, So he went to the

  479. first son and said, hello, son, can you please go

  480. and work the vinyard today? And the jokers say, I

  481. will not. But then after that he went to work.

  482. And then he had another son who he approached and said, son,

  483. will you pace go and work the vinyard today? And

  484. he's like, okay, sure, think I will go that uh,

  485. And then he did not go. And really this was

  486. a simple story that Jesus told, and the simple lesson

  487. of the story is obedience, obedience. But the amazing thing

  488. is that Jesus actually was the perfect example of what

  489. obedience looks like. When should the parent child stop being

  490. obedient to parents? Son, as we always ask, no, Hey,

  491. we also already don't need to be obedient to our

  492. parents at one age. Okay. For the Jewish culture, at

  493. twelve is where you reach the age of maturity, and

  494. so from then on, actually you are supposed to be

  495. an adult already and do your own thing up until

  496. the point twelve years old. If something, if the child

  497. does something, usually the parents have to bear responsibility. That's

  498. how it is. Okay, it still is today in that sense,

  499. but after twelve, the child has to bear responsibility. It's

  500. the thing about Jesus is he was twelve and he

  501. was found. Parents were looking for him. Remember the story,

  502. parents were looking for he? Where did the flogo? He

  503. was in a synagogue, having a conversation, teaching, doing all

  504. sorts of amazing things. But he went back and submitted

  505. himself to his parents, Mary and Joseph. He could have said,

  506. I'm all grown up, now I mean he did tell

  507. them I am doing my father's business line I mean

  508. the synagogue, but he went back to be submitted to them.

  509. I believe Jesus gave us a profound example to every

  510. child today. He was subject to his parents. Not a

  511. very popular teaching, but it's something that we need to

  512. know and we need to understand. And so why should

  513. you obey your parents? God says, obey your parents because

  514. it is the right thing to do. No other reasons

  515. are given. So you can go and decide what the

  516. right thing to do really means. All I can say

  517. is is the right thing to do? Just do it.

  518. And you notice that one of the sons in the

  519. parable was obedient, but not very happily. That was better

  520. than the other one who say I'll do it and

  521. didn't do it at all. But better still is the

  522. child who said I will and does it. For to

  523. obedience has been added, now reverence to the action of

  524. doing it. Now it has been added the right attitude.

  525. It's very important for children to understand it. It is

  526. God's will for children, not only that they should obey,

  527. but that they should willingly and honorably obey. God thought

  528. this commandment was so important that it's the first and

  529. the only commandment in the whole list of ten commandments.

  530. Actually that comes with a promise attached to it is

  531. a promise. Basically, the promise is that your health and

  532. your wealth will be improved by honoring your parents. No, really,

  533. it says you will live well and you will live long.

  534. I keep you not, I really believe in this. I've

  535. seen how some people have lived their lives honoring their parents,

  536. and really they live well and they live long. So children,

  537. you have a double duty to your parents. Basically, it

  538. is obedience and reverence. Makes sense. Okay, let's turn to

  539. the other side. Parents, And if you've got to expect

  540. the kind of loyalty from your children, then you must

  541. give the right kind of leadership to them as well,

  542. because really, how can a child honor parents who are

  543. well not honorable? And you know verse four, actually, if

  544. you read it, it's addressed to fathers in a way,

  545. maybe mothers can take a chill pill for the time being,

  546. but shouldn't because in today's dynamics, yeah, sometimes we understand

  547. that you might have to take on the father role

  548. as well. But why is it addressed to fathers? Because

  549. fathers are the head of the household. Ultimately, the responsibility

  550. is given to the father, and therefore standards of discipline

  551. and behavior is actually in the father's hands. And so

  552. first of all, we are told, we are told, I'm

  553. speaking on behalf of all the fathers here as well,

  554. not to prick your child. Basically, don't piss them off,

  555. don't provoke or anger them or irritate them, because Paul

  556. goes on to say actually in collosions that if you

  557. do this, they will be discouraged. And so ultimately a

  558. father shouldn't or a parent shouldn't discourage the children. Instead,

  559. they should always encourage them. Can we sometimes discourage and

  560. how can we put them? Well, I believe sometimes when

  561. you're very strict, you're over strict, it can be very

  562. discouraging to a child. Sometimes if you're constantly criticizing the child,

  563. it's also going to be very very discouraging. It builds

  564. up resentment in a child, and so not later that

  565. balloon is going to explode. That That is why sometimes

  566. we have shouting matches at home because no, I actually

  567. I do it all the time. I'm going to to them,

  568. but but I don't know whether I do it in

  569. jests or yeah, but but I'm reminded. I'm reminded telling

  570. me you don't want to pass your kids off. Okay, yeah,

  571. but there are two words that Paul uses in what

  572. we are supposed to do, and it's basically translated in

  573. the Bible discipline and instruction. Very important. You see, discipline

  574. in the Bible simply just means training and punishment. The

  575. word discipline means to cause pain of I'm kind to

  576. a child because you love them. When you think discipline science,

  577. we have to think of I don't know, think of

  578. a soldier, think of a think of an athlete. Soldiers, athletes,

  579. they need to lead a life that is discipline. They

  580. train so that they are able to last and endal

  581. and last long. That is the reality of it. They

  582. continue to train and do they get punished. Yeah, they

  583. get punished when they don't do it right. And so

  584. you know that's this phrase sometimes we always as parents

  585. use it. You know, this hurts me more than it

  586. hurts you when I discipline you. And now of course

  587. the children like, no, heck no it doesn't ah, But

  588. it's the true because in Hebrews twelve, this is what

  589. God says, actually, it actually hurts him when he disciplines us,

  590. his children, because really he doesn't want to see us

  591. suffer in that sense. But it's done out of love.

  592. It is done out of a cleansing love that wants

  593. to leave us better than we were before. But discipline

  594. must very importantly always be accompanied by instruction as to

  595. why you did it. And that is very, very very vital,

  596. because if you punish without instruction, it becomes inadequate. The

  597. discipline becomes inadequate. And I learned this the hard way,

  598. because I think I've shared this and I share this

  599. with all the couples that I counsel. Part of parenting.

  600. You know, when I was a young, first time parent,

  601. I believe in disciplining my children because that was how

  602. I was taught. But most of the time I disciplined

  603. them out of anger. And I find myself because you know,

  604. it's so easily frustrated as a parent. They are not

  605. really communicating. I'm getting angry, I'm getting frustrated, and then

  606. whenever I'm angry and frustrated, that's when I start to

  607. punish my children. It's not that they didn't do anything wrong.

  608. They did something wrong, but when they start hitting me.

  609. That was when I realized something is not right. So

  610. my kid, my oldest girl started hitting me. Uh, and

  611. I'm like, of course, one part of me is getting

  612. more and more angry when she starts to hit and

  613. I'm like, maybe I should really show you who who

  614. is the boss of the family. And then the Lord

  615. had to stop me and say, she's hitting you because

  616. of what she see you do to her. It's a

  617. it's a very normal common thing monkey see monkey do.

  618. And she associates when I'm angry, I hit her. So

  619. when she's angry, she hits me. It's a it's a

  620. it's a normal thing. I mean, it's what we show,

  621. what we do. And if you don't explain and instruct

  622. and trust me, you can never explain and instruct when

  623. you're angry. And because you are just angry, la okay,

  624. you are unreasonable usually when you're angry. And so that's

  625. why discipline and instruction goes hand in hand, it goes together.

  626. You must always explain and I have to learn, and

  627. I have to seek repentance, not just from God, I

  628. mean God. It's like, no, you seek repentance from your

  629. child because you did not discipline her in accordance to

  630. my ways, and so I learn. I learned, and we

  631. all have to learn. It's important because many times, if

  632. we discipline our children when we are annoyed, it's not

  633. going to be good for them. But sometimes we fail

  634. to fulfill our responsibilities because you know, we shrink back

  635. when it comes to disciplining. I know all of us know, like,

  636. because we are also not perfect, and so when we

  637. feel our responsibilities, we look at them feeling their responsibilities

  638. as like you, maybe I shouldn't be so harsh on

  639. the kid. And then sometimes we are also still sinning.

  640. We're all we're all sinners, and because we are still

  641. doing something that's not very right, we think that or

  642. maybe we should just overlook that. No, the responsibility is

  643. still for us to discipline our chure, and there is

  644. the responsibility in how we live our lives with one another.

  645. And there, of course there is the individual responsibility that

  646. we need to work on as well. That's why I

  647. started up by saying that the first part was talking

  648. about how we walk our individual lives. We got to

  649. always imitate Christ, allow his light to shine brightly in

  650. our lives, and be filled with the spirit very very important,

  651. and I thank God that he gave us a plan

  652. for family life. Children, obey your parents in the Lord. Parents,

  653. discipline your children with the counsel of the Lord Jesus.

  654. That is the right way to conduct family life. Amen,

  655. and let's move on to the last part. Okay, very quickly,

  656. very quickly, I'll speak even faster now Verses five to nine. Okay,

  657. I'm just going in sequence now, he says, slaves, obey

  658. your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them

  659. sincerely as you would serve Christ. Try to please them

  660. all the time, not just when they are watching you

  661. as slaves of Christ. Do the will of God with

  662. all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were

  663. working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that

  664. the Lord will reward each one of us for the

  665. good we do, whether we are slaves or free. Masters.

  666. Treat your slaves in the same way. Don't threaten them.

  667. Remember you both have the same master in heaven. He

  668. has no favorites. You see. Our vocation is not what

  669. job should we be doing, but how should we be

  670. doing the job that we have. It's a whole different thing,

  671. you know. So your work is a vocation not because

  672. of what you do, but because of how you do it.

  673. Every time people come and talk to me about all

  674. I want to look for new career, they're always asking

  675. me what should I do. I'm not really concerned about

  676. what you do. I'm more concerned about how you do

  677. what the Lord has put in your life to do.

  678. Because you could be you could be someone who is

  679. sweeping the streets, someone who's collecting garbage. Does that mean

  680. that or just because you're a blue collar there's no

  681. dignity in the work that you do as compared to

  682. a white collar. What can know? Because really, I believe

  683. all of us. That's why I say I don't like

  684. to segregate sacred and circular jobs. Sometimes they think, oh,

  685. just because this so and so is working for the church,

  686. his job is more sacred and the ones working in

  687. the world are all secular and worldly. Know, I don't

  688. think we must ever segregate it that way. Ultimately, we

  689. are all called to be full time workers for the

  690. Lord is how we do what we are doing. What

  691. we do is not the most important thing. What we

  692. do really, as the Lord calls you and as he

  693. has let you do it? Right? Amen? So christ is

  694. more interested in how we do our job than what

  695. we do. Okay, so let's record the context underlying love

  696. life and now livelihood. Verse twenty one says, be subject

  697. to one another or submit to one another. It is

  698. that team that Paul applies to marriage, to parents, to children,

  699. and then now to employer and employee. Same team. And

  700. Paul is going to say, there must be leadership and

  701. there must be loyalty. This will only will in both

  702. sides think of their responsibilities rather than their rights. And

  703. here Paul is showing us that it is not the

  704. work you do, it is the way you do it. Amen.

  705. And so he speaks first to the employees. Okay, not

  706. very nice term. Okay, he calls them slaves. Okay, but okay,

  707. that's just translation. You'll know, don't go around calling your

  708. staff slaves. Here can you do trouble to them? He says,

  709. he doesn't talk about time, he doesn't talk about money,

  710. as if to say, that's not your first concern as

  711. Christian workers, But that's always our first concern as Christian

  712. as any workers, Nor time, nor why my work hours?

  713. Know how much am I getting paid? But you see,

  714. he emphasizes certain behaviors to some questions that I'm now

  715. going to ask. Basically, these are the things that he's

  716. looking for. What should an employee do at work? Well,

  717. they are to be obedient and this means doing what

  718. you are told to do and doing it with the

  719. heart and not just the hands. Oh that's why I

  720. say attitude very important together with the actions. This means

  721. that you really believe that the person who told you,

  722. who gave you instructions, actually do know better. It means

  723. you believe that your boss actually does know better, and

  724. then know when you complete something the scripture says, do

  725. it with fear and trembling. It doesn't mean that you're

  726. scared of your boss cause he's going to behold your

  727. pay or he's going to make you work longer. It

  728. means that there is a fear that if you do

  729. something wrongly, really it will actually show that you get

  730. less concern. Basically, it's being more concern, showing more care

  731. in what you are doing. That is how we should

  732. what we should be doing at work? How should they

  733. be behaving well? To be conscientiously loyal? And this means

  734. you don't just work when the boss is around looking.

  735. Because remember someone else is watching. And even if nobody

  736. is watching me, there will always be someone else who

  737. is watching. That's God. So loyalty is actually something that

  738. it's hard. It's hard to come by. Actually, loyalty in

  739. every facet of our society is almost non existent, let

  740. alone prevailing. Okay, what is their attitude? Well, they are

  741. actually called to be cheerful workers, serve cheerfully. The scripture

  742. actually says that. So do you notice how Paul uses

  743. the word hard? Is your heart in it? In the

  744. work that you're doing. He talks about doing it with intent,

  745. with will, and with purpose. You know, work is is

  746. an integral part of our lives. A lot of times

  747. we think it's not important, but we are actually made

  748. to work. We are created to work. We're not created

  749. to do absolutely nothing. But it's very important for us

  750. to understand a few things when it comes to work.

  751. I always understand my work as a duty. It is

  752. my duty. It's not something that I feel like it

  753. I do it. No, it's our duty to work for

  754. the law. And if you understand it as your duty,

  755. then you will understand there is dignity in what you do.

  756. Very important because a lot of people sonis they can

  757. do their work, but to them, my job is so undignified. No,

  758. make sure you find the sense of responsibility, the duty

  759. of doing what you are called to do. Find the

  760. dignity in what you are doing. Then you will learn

  761. how to delight in your work, because a lot of

  762. us don't delight in our work. But I believe work

  763. can be delighted in. Really, I believe it all my

  764. hend beauty, dignity, delight. This is why we are purpose

  765. to work. And this is the behavior that God wants

  766. us to have as employees. And it says, great is

  767. your reward in heaven. It's not just having wages here

  768. on earth. It's more importantly what we are storing up

  769. in heaven. What you will get eventually makes sense. Okay,

  770. now let's move to employers. In Roman and Greek. The

  771. Roman and the Greek world when this was all written,

  772. slave had no rights. Basically, therefore the owner had no responsibilities.

  773. This is why I was mentioning just now. Just like

  774. husbands sometimes have got no responsibilities because the wives are

  775. treated like property, it's the same concept here. The slave

  776. is like a tool. No, and when the tool becomes

  777. sick or become useless, you can destroy the way that

  778. is how it used to be. But Paul is teaching this. No,

  779. he's now telling the slave owners, you have a responsibility

  780. for your You must treat them in the same way

  781. that I have said. They must treat you basically as people,

  782. as persons, no longer as things, and therefore you must

  783. not exploit them. And so Paul reminds first and foremost

  784. that even an employer is employed as well. You may

  785. be at the top, you may be the CEO, you

  786. may be a business owner, but remember that you have

  787. a master. Remember the Roman centurion who said, I also

  788. am a man under authority, even though I'm in command

  789. of a thousand. Do this, and he does it. Basically,

  790. to be under authority is to be in authority. So

  791. employers masters remember that. And the other thing that the

  792. boss needs to remember is the judgment of the Lord,

  793. because one day, at the end of the day, the

  794. employer and the employer are all going to stand before

  795. the judgment. See all absolutely equal, no difference of status,

  796. because God has got no favorites. The scripture tells us that,

  797. and so no distinctions, no partiality. So poly saying you

  798. are all together in this The Church actually has no

  799. distinctions of employer and employee, no distinctions between the wealthy

  800. and the poor. The church brings everybody down to the

  801. same level basically as sinners before God. That then, is

  802. Paul's way of doing it. He took the eyes of

  803. the master the employee, and he turned the eyes of

  804. the master to the Lord. He took the eyes of

  805. the slaves, and he turns the eyes of the slaves

  806. to the Lord. Both are looking at Jesus. And because

  807. he did that, they look at each other with new eyes,

  808. and a new relationship was born. And that is why

  809. our calling and our vocation is something that's so integral

  810. and so important for us to have that outlook. I

  811. tell you this and I keep you no. If you

  812. study history, you will notice that the abolition of slavery

  813. was actually by Christian men and women because they understood this.

  814. Go back and I think British history there was a

  815. lot Wilberforce, a Bible believing Christian man, and he want

  816. was one of the pioneers to really go about abolishing

  817. slave because again people were treated as chattele as things,

  818. as items, and that is not how it is. We

  819. are responsible towards each other as persons first and foremost. Amen,

  820. I'm done, John can come up. It's teaching. I totally

  821. it is teaching. But I want to draw this conclusion.

  822. It's important that we understand this. Scriptures tell us how

  823. we are to relate to one another. But before that,

  824. remember I say, it also tells us how to walk

  825. in our individual faith. Very important. If you read the

  826. whole chapter five, it says again, start off by imitating Christ.

  827. We are all followers of Jesus first and foremost. Walk

  828. in accordance to how Jesus walk his life. We have

  829. the best example of justice and mercy. Jesus really did

  830. something so amazing that I don't know. There's no human

  831. words in our vocabulary that can ever extend how grateful

  832. we are to what He has done for us. So

  833. follow him. Allow our lives to shine for Jesus, illuminate

  834. his love through how we behave, how we act, and

  835. what we do. And I know none of us can

  836. do this by ourselves. It's not easy, and that's why

  837. we need to be intoxicated with the Holy Spirit. We

  838. need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, Spirit of God.

  839. I mean, you know, that's the beauty of our faith.

  840. God accepts us first and foremost for who we are,

  841. and then he transforms us into who we ought to be.

  842. That's the difference between what we believe in any other

  843. religion in this world. Any other religion in this world

  844. will tell you that you are to first become acceptable.

  845. Do do, do, do, do, and become acceptable. But God says,

  846. I accept you for who you are, but now I

  847. have a plan for you. Basically the plan is go

  848. and sin no more. Go and live your life in

  849. accordance to how I am showing you. And how do

  850. we live with one another world? We submit to one

  851. another out of reverence for Christ. Remember it is all

  852. about our responsibilities, not our rife. Don't go into any

  853. relationship demanding rights, because when you do that, you will

  854. spoil the relationship. Go into it thinking what is my

  855. responsibility in this relationship? What can I do? Remember I

  856. always say this, When everyone gives, everyone gets. But when

  857. we go and demand, basically are we become a society

  858. that takes. And that's not how it should be. Leadership

  859. and loyalty has always been the pattern of God for

  860. people to coexist in his kingdom, whether it's in the church,

  861. whether it's in how We govern people, whether it's in

  862. our family units husband and wife, parents and children, or

  863. whether it's in our workplaces, our vocations, employers and employers.

  864. And I thank God that He not only gave us

  865. a plan and a pattern, he says he will help

  866. us as long as we carry on walking in His spirit.
