You're listening to a message to go from acts church.
-
We hope this message will light up your day.
-
Prayer is not easy, any of your think. Prayer is
-
is actually very easy. You pray for Okay, for some people,
-
it comes very naturally, I have to admit it. But
-
it's not easy because it's not really a natural act.
-
It's not something that you do natural thing. Well, it
-
may be natural in a time of emergency when you're
-
really desperate and then you shout out. I don't know
-
whether that's considered a prayer or that's just an exclamatory statement.
-
But the truth is, yeah, it's not something that you
-
do normally, and when everything is going smoothly, when life
-
is as regular as it can get, it's a very
-
unnatural action. But the truth is we all need help
-
one way or the other. And if you leave, let's
-
just say, two thousand years ago, when Jesus was walking
-
this earth, we could have just gone straight to Jesus
-
and gotten help, which is exactly what the disciples and
-
the followers did because they approached him and they said, Lord,
-
teach us to pray. We need help. But we know
-
Jesus is not walking this earth anymore. So we can't
-
just pop up to Jesus and like give me help.
-
But he did say before he left, he said, I'm
-
going to go. I'm going to have to go because again,
-
if you understand my person who in this time and space,
-
there are limitations. I can't be at everywhere all the time.
-
And we know Jesus, who walked this earth, had his
-
limitations in terms of he couldn't be in multiple places
-
at multiple times. It was just not humanly possible, even
-
though it was divinely possible. But we knew he emptied
-
himself of his divinity when he here and walk this world.
-
And so he says, I have to go because it
-
is going to be better for all of you when
-
I go, Because when I go, I will send someone
-
who is going to be better, better in the sense
-
that this person can be with you all the time.
-
And that is the promise of the Holy Spirit that Jesus.
-
Gave to us.
-
And so Jesus is the one that sent the Holy Spirit.
-
He was the one that forewarned us and told us
-
about the Holy Spirit, told the followers back then, told
-
the followers to anticipate and to expect the presence of
-
the Holy Spirit that will come, and you will come
-
in an evident way. It will come, and they will
-
know when the Holy Spirit has alive. And so one
-
of the things the Holy Spirit does is really to
-
help us at the point of our greatest need. And
-
what do you think the point of our greatest need is.
-
I will always just generalize it and see, the point
-
of our great need is actually the need to pray,
-
because whenever you start praying, you know you're in need.
-
You know that is like, okay, Lord, I need your
-
help seriously. And that is the point of our greatest need.
-
And that is where, and that is how, and that
-
is when the Holy Spirit wants to come in. But
-
the thing is, as scripture has really said, we do
-
not know how to offer prayer as we should. You
-
read Romans chapter eight, you actually see the scripture says,
-
and it's a very honest record of the scripture. Because
-
sometimes we don't know how to offer prayer, We don't
-
know how to pray. But the scripture assures us that
-
the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Hallelujah, Thank you
-
Jesus for a scripture that reminds us. Because what can
-
be more delightful than the Holy Spirit helping us in prayer,
-
because you realize that God is really not one thing
-
any of us to struggle pray. How many of you
-
all struggle with prayer. My hands are up unless you
-
tell me it's the easiest thing to do. I wake
-
up in the morning, I'm praying, you know, I walk around,
-
I'm praying. No, Actually, it's a lot of effort for me.
-
It's a lot of effort. It's not something that comes naturally.
-
I have to set a designated time sometimes because it's
-
just not easy to go about praying all the time.
-
And so what can be more delightful than knowing that
-
the spirit of God wants to help us to pray,
-
help us in our weakness. And so you realize that
-
God does not want us to struggle. He wants to
-
help us. The Father wants to help us by listening
-
all the time. And thank God, Father, God in Heaven
-
is constantly all years listening to our prayers. The Sun
-
wants to help by praying for you all the time,
-
by putting think a signature to your request, to your petitions.
-
That's why as believers we pray in the name of Jesus,
-
Because every time we pray in the name of Jesus.
-
You are essentially putting a stem a seal on the prayer.
-
And that's what the Son wants to do. The Son
-
wants to help all of us. As we pray in
-
his name, he is actually sealing it, sealing it so
-
that the Father is hearing it. And that's what Jesus
-
is doing. If you think about it, where is Jesus today?
-
He is, and the scripture record seated at the right
-
hand of God the Father.
-
What do you think Jesus is doing.
-
He's constantly showing God the Father the hands that were peers,
-
because that's the reminder that these hands were peers for
-
each and everyone of us. And so if you do
-
something that is not right, it is Jesus that holds
-
up his hands to the Father and say, Father, these
-
are your children who believe in me and believe in
-
what I have done for them on the cross of Calvary.
-
And this is proof that you can forgive them and
-
forget their sins. And that's how God, in all his graciousness,
-
forgives and forgets our sins. That's how when we appear
-
before God. And sometimes I think the first thing that
-
we want to do naturally when we see God is
-
probably to confess. I don't know, maybe it's our words,
-
like I didn't do anything wrong. I think if we
-
meet Almighty God, one who has got no fault in him,
-
I think the first thing that you will do is
-
when you meet him at the polygates.
-
I don't know.
-
I don't know how heaven is going to look like exactly,
-
but it's like, God, forgive me for all the wrong
-
that I've done.
-
But you know what God's responds will be.
-
You'll probably be something like, I don't know what you're
-
talking about. What wrong are you talking about? Because I
-
don't see any wrong. All I see is the righteousness
-
of my Son upon your life. And that is what
-
Jesus's name is in prayer. It's that seal in that petition,
-
and so we are grateful. Father wants to help by
-
listening all the time. Son wants to help by praying
-
for you all the time, putting his signature to your petition.
-
And it doesn't just end there. The Holy Spirit wants
-
to help on his end by getting the.
-
Prayer going in the first place.
-
You know, is the Holy Spirit that listen us, that
-
actually helps us to even pray.
-
And what more help could you ask.
-
For than the Holy Spirit praying in you, Jesus waiting
-
to catch it and pass it on, and then the
-
Father waiting to receive it. A Christian has all that
-
he or she can ask for when it comes to
-
help for prayer. Because the Trinity is at work in
-
our lives. The Trinity God, the Father, God, the Son God,
-
the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives. And
-
so the prepositions are very very important. We pray to
-
the Father. We pray to the Father through the Sun
-
in the Spirit against the devil, with the saints collectively
-
by ourselves, because in a way, prayer is but you
-
need to utter those prayers. Even when we come out
-
and we do corporate prayer, let's just say we do
-
this centralized prayer and everyone hates over to Syringing residence,
-
it is still every individual praying coming together collectively. Yes,
-
there is power in corporate prayer. There is power in
-
it because the Church is known as the house of
-
prayer for the nations. But yet we are still praying
-
by ourselves. It's very very important that we remember these prepositions.
-
Pray to the Father through the Son in the Spirit
-
against the devil, with the saints by ourselves. And this
-
is why in Ephicients, chapter six, verse eighteen, the reminder
-
is to pray at all times in the spirit. That
-
is the clear reminder. And that reminder came if I'm
-
not mistaken, after all the you know, the helmet of salvation.
-
What's that caused? Only the armor of God? Sorry my pray. Sorry,
-
brain jam for a while after the Armor of God.
-
After talking about the armor of God, then it came
-
to this where it says pray at all times in
-
the spirit.
-
What does that even mean?
-
In fact, you know, it's more important that you should
-
pray in the spirit rather than just pray in church.
-
Sometimes we are saying, oh, we must come to church
-
to pray. Sometimes we are like, oh, we have to
-
make sure we pray in the bed room when we
-
wake up and when we do our quiet time or
-
wherever else is it. But actually the best place to
-
pray is in the spirit because it puts a different
-
and a new dimension to every other prayer. Some people, yes,
-
they equate the church as a place where I come
-
to pray. That means I can only pray in church,
-
or I can only pray when I'm in the room
-
my own room, praying, doing my quiet time. But if
-
you think about it, when you are praying in the spirit,
-
it puts you in a different dimension altogether, because immediately
-
there is direct access wherever you are. It really does
-
not matter what building you're in, but the sphere of
-
it is what matters most.
-
That is what praying in the spirit means.
-
There is a particular sphere that we are in when
-
we are praying in the spirit, and that sphere is
-
not defined by the physical structure that is surrounding you,
-
but it's defined by who lives in us.
-
Amen. And so the.
-
Reality is this, we all have difficulties when it comes
-
to praying and science. For some of you, no, I
-
don't think there's a lot of difficulties, but you think
-
about it. There is the difficulty of talking to someone
-
we cannot see, hear, or touch. How many of y'all
-
ever been in a long distance relationship? Or Nike and
-
Amanda it's like yeah, or Minjo and team as well.
-
You know how far Binang and kal or Australia. Oh
-
he said, no, no, no, it's much further Melbourne and care.
-
I don't know.
-
Will you away in a long distance relationship guys for
-
a moment, is it okay?
-
Yeah?
-
And it's not easy right when there is no physical
-
presence when you're communicating. So the truth is it is
-
quite difficult sometimes to talk to someone that you cannot see.
-
But this one not just cannot see. No, in a
-
way science we cannot hear, so we cannot touch as all.
-
At least now with modern technology, you can see each other,
-
you can hear each other. Thank God for Zoom and
-
for all the conferencing platforms that we have today to
-
facilitate and to help with communications. But it's difficult because
-
we cannot see God, we cannot hear God, we cannot
-
touch God. Sometimes it's difficult just knowing what to say
-
when we feel that we finally got true No ever
-
come to this place, Okay, okay, God, I'm gonna talk
-
to you right now, and then you're like, oh, suddenly
-
we're all tongue tight. And sometimes it's difficult because we
-
ask for things that we don't need. Sometimes we even
-
ask for things that may not be good for us.
-
That's the reality of it.
-
And sometimes it's difficult because our thoughts wonder how many
-
of you ever have wondering thoughts. I have it all
-
the time, especially when we are sitting down praying.
-
Right.
-
No science, We use our devices, you know, to read scripture.
-
Then notifications come and it wonders. Our mind wonders. That's
-
just the reality of it. And so you can make
-
a long list of all the problems, but basically the
-
main thing is actually knowing.
-
What to say, say and saying it.
-
Ultimately, it is the prayer is so challenging because sometimes
-
we don't know what to say. It starts with that,
-
and that is what happens. You ask a child to pray,
-
that's always the thing. What do I say? How do
-
I do it? It's the same for all of us.
-
If you're a new believer and we say, hey, pray,
-
why didn't you pray? And the first thing that comes
-
to our mind is what do I say? How do
-
I pray? And so when the disciples said Lord, teach
-
us to pray, they were essentially saying, Lord, teach us
-
a prayer. It was actually almost a cry like, hey,
-
what do we do? Is there something you know, is
-
there some act that we have to do? Is there
-
something in somewhere we have to face something that we
-
have to do? And you know that was them actually
-
desperately one thing to know what prayer is, and they
-
are essentially saying, Lord, will you give us a form
-
of words because we really do not know what to say?
-
And that was how the Lord's Prayer was actually given
-
to us. And what a wonderful, powerful prayer that we
-
have right now today, a prayer that Jesus taught his
-
disciples and taught all his followers to pray our Father
-
who is in heaven, Hello, be your name. And there's
-
so much that we can learn from that prayer. But
-
essentially it was a bunch of words that Jesus gave
-
to the disciples. And therefore what the Holy Spirit does
-
is take what we want to say and cannot get
-
out and cannot express, and then he lists it down
-
for us and then he sends it on. Isn't that
-
the best help one could ever ask for? Because, like
-
I said, I started by saying that we don't have
-
Jesus to go to and ask him for a bunch
-
of words for us to pray today, even though we
-
are grateful that we have the Lord's Prayer recorded in
-
scripture that we pray all the time. And that's why
-
I encourage people start off the day by praying the
-
Lord's prayer, especially if you think there are no words.
-
I'm tongue tied, I don't even know where to start. Well,
-
this is the best place to start off with the
-
Lord's prayer. But you know, our prayer life is not
-
just the Lord's prayer, because that can be prayed and
-
added in less than one minute. I think in fifteen
-
seconds you're probably done with the Lord's prayer. And so
-
the Holy Spirit wants to actually bring us to a
-
place to help us express. And that's why I believe
-
prayer in the Spirit has two aspects to it, very
-
distinct expects to it, which I want to teach. I
-
know it sounds a little bit deep, but I pray
-
with this understanding. It brings you to a different level
-
in terms of your own prayer life, because again we
-
are in the midst of forty days of prayer and fasting.
-
So what are the two different aspects? Okay, let me
-
try to define it my simple understanding. Okay, there is
-
prayer in the spirit where the Spirit takes over your
-
mind and gives you the right thoughts which you then
-
have a responsibility to express. Okay, that is one kind
-
of prayer in the spirit, when you are praying what
-
He has put in your mind. Ever experience that, ever
-
ask God what to pray for? Because onless we don't
-
even do it. We think, we think very hard what
-
to pray. But I've come to this place where really
-
I'm quite desperate, especially if you stand up here. You know,
-
on Sunday the prayer support team come up, and then
-
people walk up. Some people walk up to you. It'll
-
be nice if they tell you what's going on, and
-
then you can pray and understanding. Someone just walk up
-
to you in tears, and then you ask God, what
-
is it that I need to pray for this person? Really,
-
there is that dependency, and so the spirit can take
-
over our mind and give us the right thoughts, which
-
we then have the responsibility to express. Okay, that's one
-
form of prayer. And then there is another form of
-
prayer in which he does not use your mind, but
-
he takes over your mouth and you have the responsibility
-
to move your mouth and your tongue. Hence, this is
-
a case where your cooperation is simply to use your mouth.
-
I will explain and I'll teach, but I pray that
-
we understand it from this angle. So in one case,
-
it is the spirit acting on your mind and you
-
taking responsibility of translating mind into mouth. And then in
-
the other case, the responsibility is to forget your mind
-
and let him have your mouth and use it.
-
That's what we see, and.
-
These are the two kinds of prayers that we see
-
in the scriptures. Both these kinds of prayers are praying
-
in the spirit, Amen, and without praying in the spirit,
-
prayer is simply telling God what you feel, what you want,
-
or what you think is needed in a particular city,
-
because it is coming from your mind and it's coming
-
from your mouth. And yes, you can offer it through
-
Jesus to the Father. But if you want to compare
-
this to both cases that I just mentioned above, praying
-
in the spirit is where the Holy Spirit is giving
-
you the right thoughts to express, or has bypassed your
-
mind and is giving you the actual words to say.
-
That's the difference, because yes, we can pray in our
-
own flesh and understanding. A lot of times I do
-
that all the time. I need to find out what's happening,
-
I need to read the newspaper, and then you're on
-
your knees praying ready right in today's day and age.
-
Or you hear about something, or you hear about someone.
-
But this is taking it to the next level where
-
the Holy Spirit. When we are praying the Spirit, we
-
are asking the Holy Spirit you give us the words
-
or you use our mouth. Because what is essentially happening
-
is the Holy Spirit.
-
Does not pray for you.
-
It says he helps us in our weakness. The scripture
-
never says he takes over and just does it for us.
-
That means we are in no controller or no. He helps
-
us in our weakness. The Holy Spirit helps us, and
-
in fact he prays with us, and we need to
-
cooperate with him if we are going to pray in
-
the spirit. There is a cooperation that is ongoing. So
-
I give you a simple example. If you are unawell,
-
if you are a sickness and the Holy Spirit tells
-
us that he does not help us, just get healed.
-
Sometimes all way one is like, God, take away this sickness,
-
and that's the only way in which I believe that
-
you are real. But more often than not, what he
-
does is he helps us in and with the sickness.
-
Sometimes God wants us to.
-
Go through it.
-
When we actually ultimately want him to get read of it.
-
He's saying, no, go through it, because I will be
-
with you more often than not. Life's challenges is always
-
like that. If God eradicated every challenge in your life,
-
every obstacle, every painful experience, I don't know if we
-
will ever learn because we learn from these challenges. We
-
learn from problems that arise, We learn from resistance. That
-
is the reality of it. And so the Holy Spirit
-
is not there to just remove science. We think God
-
is like Santa Claus. Either give us things or take
-
things away, take the bad things away and leave the
-
good stuff with us. But he's not Santa Claus. He
-
is there to help us, and that's what the Holy
-
Spirit does. He is there not to pray for you. Science,
-
we think, Holy Spirit, you think over I have nothing
-
to do and know all of it requires Earth to
-
still be cooperating with the Holy Spirit. Very very important. Okay,
-
you're still with me. So let us take the influence
-
of the Holy Spirit firstly on the mind. And I
-
want to teach us and I want to encourage us. This
-
is something called the mental prayer. Okay, it still takes
-
your mind mental The prayer of the mind in which
-
your mind is fully involved with conscious thoughts. It is
-
the Holy Spirit that has placed these thoughts there in
-
some way. Sometimes he plays the thoughts there true and impression.
-
Sometimes he places a thought thrue there because of a burden.
-
Sometimes he plays a thought in there because of a
-
truer memory. Sometimes it's true a circumstance. You ever find
-
yourself suddenly you thought or something, or suddenly you are
-
prompted and I want, I think I need to pray
-
for this person.
-
You know, time and time again it has.
-
Happen, And this is the Holy Spirit really putting something
-
in your mind, something that you should be praying for.
-
Because when you do not know what to pray for,
-
this is where I want to encourage us. Why not
-
ask Him to tell you what to pray for. There
-
are days, and there are many days in my own
-
journey where I'm saying, God, give me the right words
-
to pray.
-
I don't even know what to say.
-
When you know someone is in need and you do
-
not know what that need is, why not ask God
-
to tell you what the need is. What is it
-
that you should be praying for that person? Because sometimes
-
when the person comes up and tells you his or
-
her need. Ever find yourself like, yeah, that is your need.
-
But I want to also pray something which I believe
-
is beyond what you can think, but what God has
-
put in my heart to pray for you. And that's
-
something that's very very important. And because you be astonished
-
how often God actually puts thoughts in your mind and
-
how accurate those thoughts are for different ones as you
-
continue to exercise this gift, it's very important. And sometimes
-
it's not even an obvious need. But you prayed for someone,
-
and ever had someone come out to you and say,
-
you know, many years ago you prayed, you prayed something
-
for me, And of course most of the time you
-
were like, serious, I don't remember why I say it.
-
Probably you'll be like, who are you?
-
You know?
-
But the truth is the Lord uses us when we
-
are sensitive and we are wanting and when we are
-
yearning for him to speak to us. Because when we
-
are praying, the spirit in this mental where the Spirit
-
helps us not only with the mind, but also with
-
the heart and the will. So that essentially what is
-
happening is our whole personality is being prompted. Our whole
-
personality is being quicken. That's what it means by being
-
quickened in the spirit, because your spirit is not just hard,
-
it's also mind, it's also will. And so usually when
-
we pray, you will realize again this is how we
-
are made up. You realize that you encounter some of
-
these problems, the problems that we encounter. Firstly, problems of
-
the heart. Sometimes I do not have a strong enough
-
desire to pray right. Ever, find yourself in that situation,
-
because the reality is, as humans, if we really want
-
to do something, we will do it. Human nature is
-
as such, right if you put your mind to it,
-
I want to If I really want to exercise, I
-
want to run this marathon, and I'm going to make
-
sure I train for it, you will put your mind
-
to it. If you really like something, you will put
-
your mind to it.
-
You do it.
-
You love pickaball, you will play it every weekend, Alida,
-
nothing wrong with that. So the problem is sometimes the heart,
-
there is a lack of desire because obviously I don't
-
want it enough. That's the first problem that we all
-
face with the heart. The second problem we face is
-
with the mind. And I mentioned just now wandering thoughts.
-
Sometimes it's so difficult for us to concentrate sometimes. Know
-
as I'm sharing, and if that it's a football match
-
yesterday and my team just lost, I'll be in a
-
lousy mood.
-
That's the reality of it. Lousy.
-
That's how sometimes I realize, Man, this football thing is
-
messing up my life. Uh no, how do I even?
-
But I find myself, you know, feeling for a football
-
club that I have no association with, not like I
-
live in that place, grew up supporting the I mean crazy,
-
It's crazy how sometimes we associate ourselves. But the truth is,
-
sometimes our mind is wondering and it's so hard to concentrate.
-
And the third problem is the will.
-
It's a matter of discipline, and the truth is desired direction, determination.
-
These are things that don't come easily, and you need
-
a pretty strong personality to achieve some of these things.
-
And this is precisely the point in which the Holy
-
Spirit says, let me help you with this treat areas
-
if you would allow me to. Because what the Spirit
-
wants to do is the Spirit wants to give you
-
passion in your prayer. The Spirit wants to give you
-
perception in your prayer. And the Spirit wants to give
-
you persistence in your prayer. Have you ever thought of
-
asking for these treatings? Sometimes we don't even realize, But
-
there are days when I find myself saying, Lord, give
-
me a passion to pray, so that my heart wants too,
-
because sometimes the heart just doesn't want to. But Lord,
-
give me a passion. You know, I've been in x
-
for a long time, since two thousand and five. I
-
don't know if I've ever missed prayer services unless I'm
-
not in town, or I'm unwell or I'm sick. But
-
other days when I'm like, I really need to go
-
for prayer service. Yes, it's like come again. No, it's
-
like praying through a list of things. No do I
-
But really, there are days when I find myself, Lord
-
give me passion for prayer, because it's so important sometimes
-
that we lack the desire, so pray that God gives
-
you the passion. Sometimes we are praying, God, give me
-
perception so that my mind knows what to ask for,
-
because a lot of times our mind is stuck and
-
our mind doesn't know what.
-
To ask for.
-
That's why we are clueless. When he comes to prayer,
-
ask God to give us perception. And sometimes what we
-
really need is God give us persistence that we will
-
keep on asking until we get it, because a lot
-
of times when it comes to prayer, the lack of
-
persistence is really the kill all. It's like, I ask, ready,
-
he never answered. I talk to him Ready, he turned
-
a death fear to me. I ask once and no
-
response is I take it as putai ta. I know
-
there's a Chinese song curtain, I can't. It means the
-
guess is here to look for your father, but the
-
Father is not home, and so bye bye, says the guests.
-
But persistence is so needed. And so you can always
-
tell when someone is praying in the spirit, even when
-
their minds is involved, and that they know their thinking.
-
Because if you're praying the spirit, full of passion, full
-
of perception, and full of persistence, you will also see
-
certain things that become very evident in your life. Firstly,
-
you will notice that the will of the Father will
-
come true.
-
Why do I say that?
-
Because the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, and
-
he prays with us according to the good and acceptable
-
will of the Father. Amen, and you will find yourself. No,
-
sometimes you always use this I call it a cheat
-
cod God. If it be your I let it happen.
-
It's like the cheek got prayer. I know it's like God,
-
if it be, or will, let it happen.
-
But I'm encouraging you.
-
We don't have to say put a condition like that
-
to catch it all. But we should really allow our
-
minds to be passionate, to be persistent, to have the
-
right perception. Because what we are essentially saying is, Lord,
-
tell me what your will is, so that I can
-
pray your will come to pass for this person. We
-
can do that because when you do that again, you
-
will see the will of the Father coming true. The
-
second thing you'll notice is if the spirit is in
-
your mental prayer, the glory of.
-
Jesus will be there as well.
-
You will find that if someone is praying in the spirit,
-
that thoughts.
-
Will always live Jesus up. You see that.
-
You realize that there are some people that you talk
-
to them every time, they are always in this almost
-
very prayerful More, they'll be like not all glory to Jesus, No, God,
-
bless you Jesus be lifted up on high. Those sciences.
-
We think all these holy holy people big kukui. But
-
I really believe if you are completely aligned, you will
-
keep glorifying Jesus. It means you take no glory, you
-
will glorify Jesus. And the third thing is this, someone
-
who is praying in the spirit will It's very clear
-
the will of the Father is going to be evident,
-
the glory of the Sun is going to be evident.
-
Then the truth of scripture is also going to be
-
very evident in your life, because again the spirit is
-
the one that brings all these three aspects together. Think
-
about it, who wrote the scriptures? Who wrote the scriptures?
-
It's actually the Holy Spirit, because it's people who were
-
inspired by the Holy Spirit who put pen to paper,
-
wrote all those scriptures on scrolls, and then after that
-
it was somehow copied with no photos that machine.
-
Think about it.
-
Know, the fact that we have God's word with uth
-
today is nothing short of a miracle, because we have
-
thousands of copies of the manuscripts from the original manuscript
-
in the time when there is no xerox machine. You
-
think about it, it's nothing short of a miracle. But
-
it's started off by someone inspiring these people, and it's
-
the Holy Spirit. And so you will realize that as
-
you are praying in the spirit, you will echo God's
-
word because it's the spirit that wrote the Bible. That's
-
why you find that sometimes when there are some people
-
who are praying, they're always quoting scripture, because again it's
-
the spirit that wrote the Bible.
-
Amen.
-
And so the thoughts of someone praying in the spirit
-
will be clear about the will of the Father, the
-
glory of the Sun, and the truth of the scripture.
-
And the Spirit will bring those three expects in prayer.
-
And once again you see the Trinity at work even
-
in our prayer life. And so this is the help
-
the Spirit wants to give you at the mental level,
-
directing your mind in prayer, giving a desire in your
-
heart to pray, giving a perception in your mind so
-
that you know what the will of God is, giving
-
a determination in your will so that you keep on
-
carrying on asking until you receive it, and then leading
-
you ultimately to exhort Jesus and to draw the truth
-
from the scripture. That is what the Holy Spirit does
-
for us, Amen. And it all seems to fit together
-
into this pattern. It means that I am responsive and
-
open to him in my mind. I'm listening mentally to
-
get what the Spirit is saying to me, so that
-
the prayer becomes not my mental prayer, but it becomes
-
he is mental prayer, and I'm thinking the spirit's thoughts
-
after him. All we need to do is express it.
-
And this is where I want to encourage us. There
-
is this first level of mental prayer, Amen, and then
-
there is the other kind, the one that Paul says,
-
the mind becomes unproductive. Okay, And I know sometimes this
-
is something that can be a little bit controversial depending
-
on where you come from, but we are a spirit
-
field and a spirit led church. In other words, in
-
this kind of prayer, the Spirit is there, but there
-
are no thoughts at all, because the Holy Spirit takes
-
over at another level. He takes over at the mount level,
-
and he prays a prayer that is beautiful, which you
-
have not needed to think of anything. And sometimes I
-
really am so great. It's such a relief not to
-
be able to pray a prayer that you don't have
-
to think about because you think praying is an easy.
-
No, it takes a lot of thinking.
-
You are half the time unless you are a I
-
don't know, a verbal diarrhea kind of person, or your
-
vocabulary is awesome. A lot of times we are constantly
-
thinking what to pray, how to pray, how not to
-
offend people in our prayers. No, we are constantly thinking God,
-
So it is. It is a big effort sometimes even
-
to pray. But I am so grateful that there is
-
a prayer where you can do it even if you're tired.
-
You can do it even while you're driving. We pray
-
and rit or you can get into accidents or no. Really,
-
because if your mind is really focused on prayer, and
-
it is sometimes we are, you know, even praying in
-
the spirit with our mind. We need to know what
-
is it that God is impressing upon you to say?
-
And so our focus and our mind sometimes it is not.
-
But Harley Luiah, the fact that we can pray in
-
the spirit, where the spirit just ticks over our mouth
-
and it requires no mental concentration whatsoever, especially at the
-
time where sometimes we are stuck forwards. I am so
-
grateful that there is this kind of prayer. And I
-
think this is such a lovely, gracious gift from God
-
to give us this form of help in prayer. So
-
what does a prayer that has not come from someone's
-
mind sound like? And sometimes it could be your longings.
-
Sometimes it could be your burdens. Sometimes it could be
-
your passions that's so deep. Sometimes it could be groanings
-
and moanings and you cannot really put them into words.
-
And this is essentially the Spirit interceding for us. And
-
you know, the Holy Spirit can give you total fluency
-
in any language he knows. That is my faithful and
-
humble belief. You think about it. There are about six
-
thousand languages. I believe the Holy Spirit knows every single one.
-
This is just known languages. Think about the many other
-
languages that there are there but we don't know about it.
-
That could be even more. But I believe the Holy
-
Spirit knows every single one of it. And the Holy
-
Spirit is able to give us this wonderful fluency in
-
any language that he knows. And that's what happened on
-
the day of Pentecost because they were all in one accord,
-
in one place, and they were all filled with Holy Spirit,
-
and they all begin to speak in are the languages
-
as the Holy Spirit put the words together and strings
-
it and helps them with this new language. You see,
-
the devil hates this because he knows it sets people
-
free in prayer. Do you know how liberating this form
-
of prayer is, and the devil hates it because he
-
knows that every word of that prayer will be just right,
-
because this is not something that we can contrive out
-
of our own knowledge and understanding, and that is why
-
the devil will do anything he can do to turn
-
people off, to turn people away from this and to
-
say that you do not need it, to say that
-
this is wrong, and sometimes to even say that this
-
is from some people. Some people tell me that why
-
are you praying tongues? That's from the devil. And I'm
-
actually very careful with a statement like that, because for me,
-
that is you are tittering on blesspheming the Holy Spirit,
-
because what the Holy Spirit has given to us, we
-
are saying that it is of the devil. And I
-
pray we don't have that mindset. I know sometimes there
-
are different understandings and different ways of interpreting the scripture
-
that sometimes we may not completely buy into it. But
-
I pray today that you understand that this is a
-
gift from the Holy Spirit.
-
It is not off the devil.
-
Don't have that in mind, because you see the apostle
-
Paul actually says this, I wish you could all speak
-
in tongues.
-
He said it.
-
Yes, he made a comparison with prophecy, and he says
-
it'd be even better if you can prophesy. But that
-
does not negate the fact that he says, I wish
-
you all could pray in tongues, and I hope we
-
could understand the simplicity of giving the Holy Spirit your
-
mouth and letting him pray through you, because it is
-
a prayer in which the Lord supplies every word for you,
-
and God say, here is a prayer to pray to me.
-
It is only those who are prepared to become little
-
children and learn a new language. So you got to
-
start with baby talk, and that's what sometimes causes a
-
lot of words to like her. There's always that barrier.
-
Not a new language. You learn any new language. It's
-
not something that you become fluent overnight. It takes time,
-
it takes practice. But it is still a beautiful gift
-
in a way, if you think about it. It was
-
the very first gift that the Lord gave to the church.
-
That's how I view it, because x Chapter two was
-
when they all gathered. And sometimes people say, but it's
-
actually a very low like in terms of hierarchy or gifts,
-
it's a low gift. Well, you could say that, but
-
I will always also say it's the best one to
-
begin with, because ever find yourself not knowing how to
-
pray as a Christian when it should be the most
-
natural thing for us to do.
-
That's why I believe this is a beautiful gift to
-
begin with.
-
Yes, if you want to compare it with the other
-
gifts of the spirit, there are others which can do
-
even more, the prophetic gifts. But it is a very
-
special gift, one which is very personal to every believer.
-
And that's why at the Upper Room prior to the Pentacost,
-
what were they doing. One hundred and twenty people met
-
every day for ten days in prayer. Read the scriptures,
-
you'll see that they met together in prayer. They all
-
were having their mental prayers. But on the day of Pentecosts,
-
they switched from mental prayer to a completely different kind
-
of prayer, in which God had their mouths, not their minds,
-
and He poured out his spirit and they were free
-
and they were praising him. That's what he says in
-
x chapter one and two. If we see the records,
-
so this is a gift I believe primarily for personal usage,
-
for self edification. The scriptures will tell you that. And
-
this is why Paul said he would be delighted if
-
all of you could speak in tongue.
-
Why not if it's.
-
Something that can build you up, Because ultimately, yes, I
-
know sometimes people always say it's such a selfish gift,
-
it's for yourself ony, But what do you think and
-
edified Christian will do, and edified Christians will.
-
Build the body.
-
Yes, all the other gifts is very clear is for
-
the building of the body of believers, and tongues is
-
also for the building of the body of believers, if
-
there is interpretation. But I believe for your own personal use.
-
When you are edified, what do you think you will do?
-
And edified Christian will build the body of Christ, will
-
continue to strengthen the Body of Christ.
-
That is what we will do. And so the.
-
Primarily primary use of the gift is to help us
-
when we are stuck, and a lot of times we
-
are stuck.
-
And the law wants to help you in your personal prayer.
-
And this is such an amazing gift because if you
-
read about Paul, you realizeless we talk about Paul and realize, oh,
-
his amazing missionary. He's an apostle, awesome dude who ran around,
-
you know, just evangelizing nations and planting churches. But you
-
don't realize Paul actually had a tremendous prayer life. And
-
that's why he says, I thank God that I speak
-
in languages more than all of you. And there you
-
hit the secret of Paul's prayer life. What is the power?
-
Where is the power? How does he draw? How does
-
he keep ongoing? How does someone who has been stoned,
-
someone who has been shipwrecked, someone who has been bitten,
-
someone who has been given thirty nine stripes on more
-
than one occasion. How did he manage it all?
-
How did he support himself?
-
And Paul says that he thanks God he has this
-
way of praying and that he can use it more
-
than all the Corinthians put together. Here you discovered the
-
secret of Paul's prayer life is that he used all
-
the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given to him.
-
And so when Paul was bitten and when he was tired,
-
he knew that he could pray without mental effort. Ever
-
tried praying when you were exhausted you know, I shed
-
with the plant Subang last week. So I have this
-
tall tree outside my house and from time to time
-
I have to climb the tree to trim it. Uh.
-
I did it about six months ago, and six months
-
later it grew up. So six months ago I trimmed
-
the tree. And the letter I was using was a
-
pretty old letter. I think be using it for thirty
-
or forty years. Thirty years my dad used to use it, okay.
-
Uh.
-
And so I remember when I came down the tree
-
at the highest point, the letter started to bend, it
-
sort of gave way and I've got you Australia is
-
quite heavy, uh.
-
And it started the band.
-
And then for a moment, for a moment there, I
-
saw my whole life flashing because I could see myself falling.
-
I could see myself falling. Thank God, I really the
-
Lord helped me to land, not very gracefully, but I
-
landed minimum injuries.
-
Okay.
-
But my mom saw it all, and so she was
-
like she freaked out. She was like she's just screaming
-
because again, twenty years ago, my dad climbed the tree,
-
saw it and he fell and he sort of impaled
-
himself against the fence. So my mom is a little
-
bit traumatized, really okay traumatized. I did it again to
-
her act she was screaming. Didn't help. And so this
-
time I wanted to go up again. I wanted to
-
go up because it's starting to encroach. I just get
-
that you'll hit the power lines.
-
And also I had to.
-
Go up to trimming a little bit again, but this
-
time I got a lot more. There is the natural fear.
-
I have to admit there was a natural fear. And
-
then my mom constantly don't do it, don't do it,
-
don't do it. So instead of encouraging me and helping me,
-
she's like, don't do it, don't do it. You know,
-
have the tire, Like can you just help me? Steady
-
the leader and don't say anything. But she's like, So
-
I ran up and I learned one thing, Uh don't
-
don't trim the tree after you run five km. Don't
-
tream the tree when you're fasting. Because I went up
-
and I didn't have I usually have a miniature chain saw,
-
which I didn't have this time around because I thought
-
I saw from Afar the shoots looked like a saw.
-
Is enough.
-
Then up close and personal it was much ticker than Yeah,
-
so anyway, but I only have the manual saw, which
-
I had to saw upwards, and for the first time
-
I was I was actually very red tired. I was
-
so tired I thought I was going to black. I
-
was just hugging, hugging the tree like a koala a koalah.
-
And you know, there are days I realized when you're
-
just so tired, you do it even know what to pray.
-
And all I did was I just started praying in
-
the language that the Lord has given me because I
-
can't even think of it. I can't remember like Lord
-
helped me, seriously, because part of me it's like you
-
stupid fool, are you? You're the one that went now
-
under all these circumstances. But but I found myself just
-
praying in the language because again I was just so
-
exhausted I couldn't think. And that's why I sort of
-
can identify when you know, when you read how did
-
Paul pray unceasingly having gone through all that he had
-
went through? Really, I think sometimes you are in a broken, beaten,
-
exhausted state that no matter how much you think you
-
can conjure up thoughts to pray, you won't be able
-
to do it, because I believe he prayed in these languages,
-
and it is clear it is not something for us
-
to think that it's a less gif is not a
-
good thing to have in our life. It's something that
-
belongs only in Paul's time, only during the Apostolic time. No,
-
I believe this is something that the Lord wants to
-
give us, and so you have to ask yourself, would
-
I like such a gift? Because really, coming from me personally,
-
this is one of the best gifts that the Lord
-
can give to every believer. And that is how I
-
discover that there is a kind of prayer in the
-
spirit that God wants to help us with. So don't
-
let anyone, don't let the devil tell you or anyone
-
else tell you that this is not right, because really
-
the devil wants to stop it. Can you imagine everyone
-
praying in the spirit, every believer praying in the spirit,
-
the enemy will be really afraid. And this is where
-
I want to encourage us. Don't let anything or anyone
-
divert your attention from this. Go back to the scriptures.
-
Don't even take my word for it. You go back
-
to the scriptures. And read it and tell me if
-
this is not something that God wants to give, because
-
ultimately we come to a very practical thing right now.
-
How No, we talk about praying the spirit?
-
Yeah, you talk.
-
I give you the theory of how it works, how
-
God can feel your mind, how he can take over
-
your tongue. But how how do we actually even get started?
-
And I can tell you it's in two wards on me,
-
And I'm referring to both praying both forms that means
-
the mental form and also the form that does not
-
require the mental thoughts. Because in First Corinthians chapter fourteen fifteen,
-
Paul says, I pray with my mind and I pray
-
with my spirit. So it's two kinds of prayer. And
-
Paul tells us that he does both, and so the
-
how applies to both. And these are the two words
-
that sometimes we don't realize, but it's there. Basically, it's
-
ask and receive. You see, everybody who is helped in
-
prayer has first asked. And the text is from Luke
-
chapter eleven. Remember the text from Luke chapter eleven. It says,
-
ask sick and knock us sick and knock. Sometimes we
-
think it's the one is the best give voucher for us.
-
Know this is the way that God wants us to
-
go and redeem all our things. Yes, in a way, Yes,
-
because it's not us one time. No, it's us and
-
carry on asking. You know, I live it When Selena prays,
-
Selena mentions the word continues repeatedly. I don't know whether
-
there is an automated thing in her. But if you realize,
-
I say, Okay, now she's gonna be super conscious. But
-
she will say God, continue, continue to help, continue to
-
do this. You know, God is continuous. In fact, if
-
there is one word to describe God, you can use
-
the word always.
-
Always.
-
We are the ones that sometimes know when we do
-
things is one time only, and so science we like
-
ask one time and then never hear bye bye. Seek
-
One time I sought the Lord, he didn't appear, bye bye,
-
knock and no one opened the door bye by no.
-
Actually the scripture is in the continuous tense. That means,
-
if you read it, it says you have to read it,
-
ask and continue asking, or ask and carry on asking,
-
seek and carry on seeking, not and carry on knocking
-
until something happens and he doesn't just end there. Again,
-
it's not a gift voucher, prayer or a scripture that's
-
talking about how you go and readeem gifts. It's really
-
talking about the Holy Spirit. Because the part of the
-
Word says this, if you, who are evil know how
-
to give good gifts to your children, how much more
-
will your heavenly Father give holy Spirit to those who
-
go on asking him. So it's as simple as ask,
-
do you want this, then us until you get it,
-
because God loves to answer those who are bold enough
-
to us and persist in asking. But there is another sign,
-
and this is where the problem sometimes occurs. In a sense,
-
there is a surrender involved on our side, on our part,
-
an act of surrender, an act of letting go and
-
letting God. I need to let go and I need
-
to let God take over. You see, the one thing
-
most of us hate to do is to let go
-
of our self control because we feel that if we
-
do that, we may end up in chaos. We don't
-
like that. But I tell you this, the fruit of
-
the Spirit. One of the care characteristics of the Fruit
-
of the Spirit is self control. And if you get
-
his self control, believe me, it is much better than yours.
-
And it's a genuine gift of the spirit. A genuine
-
gift of the spirit has no loss of self control
-
about it whatsoever. Sometimes we think, oh, you know, the
-
Spirit comes over, these people start to behave in some weird,
-
strange way.
-
They're all out of control.
-
If it has it is not the spirit, because Paul
-
teaches that the spirit of the Prophet is subject to
-
the Prophet. Therefore, the Holy Spirit graciously puts this gift
-
under your control, so no one needs to be afraid
-
of being rushed beyond what they control. You decide whether
-
you let him take over or not. And if you
-
do not like it when he takes over, you can
-
stop it. That is the reality it. But I believe
-
you will not want to. If you allow the Holy
-
Spirit to take over, you will not want him to
-
stop because you think about it. If you have experienced
-
the goodness of God, so ask. It's the first thing
-
that we need to do. But then there is a
-
second part. You know, if I have a chocolate bar,
-
and I don't know what that Joel is a chocolate level.
-
But if I offer him a chocolate, if he doesn't
-
receive it, he ain't going to be eating that chocolate.
-
That's the reality of it. A lot of us don't
-
know how to receive.
-
But it's a.
-
Simple task sometimes because the biggest problem with many people
-
is they ask and they never receive. Sometimes they never
-
position themselves. We got to position ourselves to receive. There
-
is a posture of reception. If Joel's hands are in
-
his pocket, that is not a posture your reception, unlest
-
I'm going to feed him the chocolate, which I'm not
-
going to do because God doesn't just want to spoon
-
feed you everything. There is something that's very important for
-
us to receive. You see, any gift, the gift of
-
the Holy Spirit, and any gifts of the Holy Spirit
-
are all grace gifts. That's where the word carries mata
-
comes from.
-
These are all gifts given. The Holy Spirit is a
-
gift given to us.
-
Not because we earn the right to have the Holy
-
Spirit in our lives.
-
No, it's a grace gift.
-
That means we did not do anything to deserve it,
-
but God gave it to us. That means you still
-
need to receive the gift. Any gift offered before you.
-
If you don't receive it, essentially you are refusing it.
-
So that means in reception. There is also refusee and
-
I pray we will not refuse because sometimes we are
-
in a place where we don't want it. Or maybe
-
that's my understanding, or maybe I've been I've been taught
-
that this.
-
Is not something that I should receive.
-
I'm saying, if you believe the scriptures and go back
-
and read it for yourself, and if the Lord is
-
tugging in your heart, and if you are already asking Lord,
-
I want and need more of you. It is Jesus
-
who baptizes us in Holy spirit. Ask Jesus to baptize
-
you in holy spirit, because it is true this baptism,
-
that we receive this gift. Really, sometimes it involves a
-
bigger psychological hurdle. Sometimes hearing our own voice makes strange sounds,
-
say strange things that we don't know what it is
-
that we don't understand. That is a big hurdle for
-
many of us. So as we look at other people
-
who were like what mum, jumple, what gibberish?
-
I was once like that.
-
Until it came because I knew and I understood, Lord,
-
this is something for me. I don't know what they're saying.
-
It meant nothing. I was a new not even a
-
new believer. I was a pre believer, and all those
-
things that they were doing was didn't make sense.
-
And that's why the scriptures.
-
Put in those warnings and those reminders of how the
-
usage forbid in public should be like.
-
But that does not negate.
-
The fact that Called wants all of us to be
-
able to be praying in the spirit, not just.
-
In the mental way, but also through our mouths.
-
So the real hurdle sometimes is in our minds. Psychologically,
-
there is that barrier here. God wants to give you
-
a language. He wants to give you the fluency some
-
wor's thing or his baby talk. I don't need baby
-
talk in my life. I need words that make sense. Yeah,
-
we have, we are all given the mental faculty. But
-
like I say, you know, there are days when all
-
the mental faculty that you have won't even be able
-
to produce words because it could be just so tired,
-
you could just be so stucked. But yet we have
-
this gift where the spirit is praying to us. I
-
pray that we will not say no to this because
-
it starts off not by us just waiting for it
-
to happen. You know, Peter, before you walk the water.
-
Jesus didn't ask him to go and pray about it
-
and read the Bible.
-
Jesus says saying, come.
-
He didn't say a get on your knees, pray that
-
you'll be able to walk on one network. He says, come.
-
And you know, every spiritual gift is like that. You
-
do not know if you have the give of healing
-
really until you start laying hands on people. And sometimes
-
that's what we need to do. And so when your
-
spirit receives a strong impression that you could do something,
-
why not just step out, step out of the boat
-
and do it.
-
And then is how gives a development.
-
That is how you receive them because you have already
-
overcome the psychological barrier and you're saying, I want this.
-
And I'm going to receive it. I'm going to receive it.
-
This is my encouragement to all of us.
-
This is how you discover every other gift, and this
-
is how you pray in the spirit. You ask Lord,
-
I'm I need your help, I need your Holy Spirit.
-
I cannot pray as I ought.
