  1. You're listening to a message to go from acts Church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day. We're

  3. going to teach there on prayer. I'm going to take

  4. the shortest prayer that the Lord taught us in the scriptures,

  5. which is from the Book of Luke, the Gospel of Luke.

  6. I'm going to break it down a little bit, and

  7. I pray that prayer is something that we don't find

  8. it impossible or far away or hard to relate to.

  9. I want us to realize how simple it has always

  10. been and how much the Lord wants us to continue

  11. with this daily discipline of prayer and fasting. And so

  12. why I'm doing this also is I hope we are

  13. not just people who wait for the season of land

  14. denually we pray and fast. Let's let's let's not do that.

  15. I pray is next one week left? No, if you

  16. have not started something, you'll start something, and you will.

  17. Let this be a good lifestyle, a good way of

  18. living our Christian journey, our Christian walk, so that it's

  19. something that continues to help us grow and become effective

  20. as believers. I think that's what we all want to

  21. be as well. We want to be not just good believers,

  22. but good effective believers. That is the purpose that the

  23. Lord has for each and every one of us. Amen.

  24. So I'm going to read Luke chapter eleven Versus wonderful.

  25. I simply entitled the message today, the content, the condition,

  26. and the cost of prayer. I'll break it down as

  27. it is. I hope to be able to explain it

  28. clearly so that we are able to also be equipped

  29. moving forward. Okay, and so Luke chapter eleven Versus one

  30. to four it says this, and I'm going to read

  31. it very quickly. Once Jesus in a certain place praying.

  32. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him

  33. and said, Lord, teach us to pray just as John

  34. taught his disciples. Jesus said, this is how you should pray. Father,

  35. May your name be kept holy, May your kingdom come soon.

  36. Give us each day the food we need, and forgive

  37. us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us,

  38. and don't let us yield to temptation. The Lord bless

  39. the reading of his word. Okay, short, simple, sweet. So

  40. what transpired on that day is one day the disciples

  41. woke up early and then they noticed, Okay, the bit

  42. where Jesus usually slips in is empty, and so they decided, okay,

  43. I think we need to go and look for where

  44. Jesus is hanging out right now. So they put on

  45. their clothes and they went searching for him. They found

  46. him eventually, and he was talking to his heavenly father,

  47. and so Jesus prays. You realize this if you read

  48. the scriptures, usually read the Gospels, you realize that Jesus

  49. praise and so he was talking to his father and

  50. they had never heard, I'm assuming anyone pray quite like

  51. how Jesus praise to his father. And so they listened,

  52. and then when he had finally finished, one of them

  53. gathered up the courage to approach him and say, Lord,

  54. wially teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.

  55. Very honest, I'm sure something must have been intrigued them,

  56. because they've been hanging out with Jesus all this while,

  57. but never once until then did any one of them

  58. asked to teach on how to pray. And so the disciples, actually,

  59. you think about it, should know how to pray, right

  60. because they were all Jews who grew up in the synagogue.

  61. They probably had different kinds of prayers that were already

  62. memorized since they were children. Some prayers they recited over

  63. and over very meaningfully, very sincerely. But when they heard

  64. the Lord pray to his father, they will move to

  65. ask for teaching. And I think that's very very important

  66. for us to take note. And Jesus taught them a

  67. little prayer that they could use, and for the next

  68. two thousand years Christians have used this prayer and I

  69. believe this is one of the most wonderful prayers ever. Really,

  70. it's a prayer that we should pray all the time daily.

  71. You know, there are some denominations that praise the Lord's

  72. Prayer regularly, and I really believe that's also one of

  73. the reasons why they're very very blessed. Sometimes we may

  74. not put it into the order of our worship, or

  75. we may not have liturgy. That does not mean that

  76. we shouldn't pray the Lord's Prayer daily and frequently. My

  77. encouragement is pray the Lord's prayer every day. I make

  78. it my personal habit, and this is what I will

  79. teach people to do. Don't forget it, remember and remember

  80. to pray, and so Jesus taught them this prayer that

  81. they can use. We call it the Lord's prayer. But

  82. if you think about it, the Lord never quite needed

  83. to pray this prayer because there are some things mentioned

  84. in there that he just doesn't need to ask for allah,

  85. He doesn't need to ask for forgiveness. Why does Jesus

  86. need to ask for forgiveness unless some of your things

  87. that he has wronged in you love? But really, Jesus

  88. has not wronged any one of you, even though that's

  89. how you feel sometimes. And I pray that after today

  90. we'll be able to establish some of these as facts

  91. of our faith. Our faith is built on facts, not

  92. just feelings. And the fact is Jesus has not wronged

  93. any one of us. He has come to sick and

  94. save those who are lost, and so it's actually a

  95. prayer for us, not so much a prayer for Jesus.

  96. So if you ask me, it should actually been called

  97. the Lord's People's prayer. But anyway, let's analyze it. Okay,

  98. let's analyze it. One of the things that you'll notice

  99. is it's brief, is short. You can get it over

  100. and done in twenty seconds. I think this one maybe

  101. fifteen is so much shorter. So you will notice that

  102. it is the death of the prayer, not the length

  103. that matters. It is the quality, not the quantity, that

  104. matters in prayer. And Jesus has worn his hearers before,

  105. he says, don't think that by heaping up prayers, long

  106. prayers you somehow get God to listen. That's not how

  107. it works with the Lord. So you realize that it

  108. is a simple yet very comprehensive prayer, a prayer that

  109. even children can memorize. And I know ex Kids teaches

  110. the children to memorize the Lord's prayer in their own

  111. CEV version. But it works. Okay, it's fine. The prayer

  112. is shorter here in Luke's gospel as compared to the

  113. one that we see in the Gospel of Matthew. I

  114. believe it's given in different occasions. So, like I said,

  115. I just want to take the shortest prayer that Jesus

  116. taught us and help us see that this is all

  117. that we need, actually very very important. And so Luke

  118. balls it down to the bad essentials of prayer. Yet

  119. I believe here you already have everything. So these are

  120. the first few things that I want you to notice

  121. about this prayer. First thing is this pray about what

  122. God wants before you pray about what you want. You

  123. realize that that's how the Lord's prayer starts. It doesn't

  124. start with us coming straight to the Lord with our

  125. shopping lists, even though that is usually how we come

  126. to the Lord. Well, usually we come to a lot

  127. more in desperation, you know, when we need something, then

  128. we pray. When we don't really need something, we usually

  129. remain silent and reticent, which is not a good thing

  130. for us to practice. So remember this. The simple lesson

  131. in prayer is this pray about what God wants first,

  132. before you pray about what you want. That's why the

  133. prayer actually begins with God. It doesn't begin with us.

  134. It begins with our Father, who is in heaven. Too

  135. often we will rush into God's presence with our list,

  136. with the things that we want, the things that we need.

  137. But these are the things that true this prayer. The

  138. Lord wants us to think about our God when we pray,

  139. very important. That's why it's us us to pray like this.

  140. So the first thing that we need to think of

  141. is is fatherhood, the fatherhood of God. Jesus taught if

  142. you want to talk to God like I talk to

  143. God my father. Then just come straight into his presence,

  144. like how a child would walk into the presence of

  145. his father and sit on his father's lap and say, Daddy,

  146. can I have this? That is how the Lord has

  147. taught us to pray. You see, the Lord's prayer remind

  148. finds us and it starts off with abah father. Abba

  149. is actually the endearing term that is used in uh

  150. their language. Who not like father. Okay, very few of

  151. us call our father, father or mother very formal. Most

  152. of the time we address our dads as daddy, and

  153. abba actually is the phrase daddy. So it's like the

  154. reminder is when your praying, come to the Lord and

  155. acknowledge him as Daddy, Daddy, God. And that is why

  156. it's so important for us to have that in mind

  157. first and foremost, his fatherhood. That is who he is.

  158. I know sometimes not all of us are able to

  159. identify with a good father, maybe because of our own experiences,

  160. but that does not discount, that does not negate the

  161. fact that God is a good father. And so we

  162. start off with acknowledging that that he is our father.

  163. So acknowledge his father, who the second thing we need

  164. to acknowledge is this, We need to acknowledge his purity

  165. because the truth is, none of us have ever known

  166. an earthly father whose name was holy. Even even me,

  167. my kids, they look at me, they won't, they won't

  168. call me holy, even though I'm like, not just their dad,

  169. I'm their pastor as well. But they heck, no, They're

  170. not going to call me holy because they probably seen

  171. so much of me. Uh, and know that I have

  172. my own faults, I have my own shortcomings, and so

  173. a lot of us will never be able to fully

  174. identify because we never had an earthly father who is holy.

  175. But yere, you need to remember this that our father

  176. in heaven is a father in holiness. He is a

  177. holy God. No, this is something that we find it

  178. very hard to reconsole. A holy God. He is a

  179. righteous God. That means everything that he does is right.

  180. That's something humans find hard to accept for anyone. But

  181. we need to find it deep within the recesses of

  182. our hearts to realize that God is nothing that we

  183. can ever compare to. We can't compare God with any

  184. other creature or any other creation, because he is again

  185. what is he? He is the Creator. That's why in

  186. the Apostles Creed we say, I believe in God, the Father,

  187. the creator of the heavens and the earth. He is

  188. not like us. We need to acknowledge that he does

  189. not have faults and weaknesses like us. He is the

  190. heavenly Father whose name is holy. And God's name should

  191. be held in all it should be it should it

  192. should make us feel unhappy when people use God's name

  193. in way. Really believe that if someone is swearing and

  194. cursing in the name of Jesus. I think as believers

  195. who love the Lord, we can gently and lovingly remind

  196. people please do not use God's name in vain. You know,

  197. the more we allow it and the more we just

  198. turn away. It's almost reflecting our stand and our position

  199. of how much respect we give to God's name. You

  200. don't see Christians fighting for this. You don't see Christians

  201. law being and petitioning Hollywood to stop using God's name

  202. in vain. But I think I'm not asking us to

  203. do it, but I think it should make it should

  204. exasperate us when we hear God's name used in wain.

  205. Because his name is a holy name, it's a powerful

  206. name and so really, there are many people who curse

  207. God because they perceive him as evil. They always percif as, Oh,

  208. God is not fair. You know why he allow all

  209. these things to happen to me. I'm suffering because of God.

  210. That's not true. Earth's falling shot has got nothing to

  211. do with God wanting bad things to happen to people,

  212. because there's not an ounce of evil in God. That

  213. is the reality of it is either we accept it

  214. by faith or not. And many of us find it

  215. hard only because we live in this world and we

  216. see a lot of bad things and a lot of

  217. evil things. But you need to be sure in your

  218. faith that evil does not emanate from God. Evil emanates

  219. from sin and from the prince of this world, and

  220. that's the devil who continues to still kill and destroy

  221. the things that we have. So may God's name be revered.

  222. May people never refer to it except with reverence and respect.

  223. Because he is a holy and he's a pure god,

  224. we need to acknowledge his purity in our lives. The

  225. second thing. The thing is this, you need to think

  226. about God, and you need to think about his power,

  227. his kingdom, which means his reign, which means his power

  228. to govern, which means his power to control. It is

  229. actually obvious that this world is not under his government yet,

  230. not fully. And so I believe the Kingdom of God

  231. has arrived. It has it arrives today? Jesus came into

  232. this world to establish the Kingdom of God. But has

  233. it been fully established? Has it been fully mandated? Not yet.

  234. That's why the scriptures will always tell us that the

  235. one that rules this world is the prince of this world.

  236. It's the devil. And that's why we are called to

  237. be in this world, but not off this world. And

  238. so the Kingdom of God is here. It has begun,

  239. but is inaugurated is the word that is used. It

  240. has really begun, but has it been fully consummated? Not yet.

  241. But it will happen in God's timing, because one day

  242. he will come and he will reign, and he will

  243. reign sovereignly over everything that happens here in heaven and

  244. in earth. Amen. So we first need to acknowledge his

  245. power and his kingdom and not think that God is

  246. just someone who has got no control of things, because

  247. a lot of times that's how we perceive him. We

  248. think that God I don't think you can do this,

  249. so maybe I won't trouble you. A lot of us

  250. have this mindset that God is just someone who has

  251. wound a clock and let it thick, and then whatever

  252. happens is case Sarah Sarah, is nothing that he can

  253. change or undo. It just happening, just flowing according to time.

  254. I don't believe in that. I believe God is still

  255. in control of all things. I believe God can still

  256. change things. I believe he is almighty, his sovereign, and

  257. you know, true prayer we can actually change God's mind.

  258. The scriptures have taught us over and over again. If

  259. you read the Old Testament, if God has set his

  260. mind to do something, prayer actually is something that helps

  261. to change his mind. If he set out to destroy

  262. this group of people. I've seen in the Old Testament

  263. where different ones continue to pray and ask, Lord Lord,

  264. have mercy, have mercy on this view, have mercy, and

  265. he says, okay, I will. By what do you think

  266. he's looking for. He's still looking for righteousness, He's still

  267. looking for people who will follow him, and so he

  268. is willing when we can change. He's my end. I

  269. just want us to know this, he is in control

  270. of every department money in your life. That means when

  271. you pray, you must acknowledge him as God and savior.

  272. You must acknowledge him as the king of your life.

  273. Because there are many areas of our lives where we

  274. find it hard to surrender unto the Lord. Lord, this one,

  275. I will sort it out myself. Lord, this area, I

  276. think I'd rather you not speaking to it. Lord, I

  277. don't think I want to do this in which you

  278. are impressing my heart to do. We've got to be really,

  279. really careful because it's either his king or he's not king.

  280. It's either he is king or we are king. And

  281. so your kingdom come, your will be done. We want

  282. to see it on earth. We want to see him

  283. in charge of the situation. And so this is the

  284. first part that the Lord wants us to see. He

  285. wants his fatherhood to be enjoyed by his sons and daughters.

  286. He wants his purity to be revered by his people

  287. here on earth, and he wants his kingdom to be

  288. entered so that we become his subjects. That is how

  289. we are to think of God when we are praying.

  290. That's how we have to start all our prayers. In

  291. other words, you must think of God as father, judge,

  292. and king and not just your pal. A lot of

  293. times we think Jesus is just our homeboy. No, Hi, hey,

  294. I got this problem and you better help me. You

  295. better help me, don't. No. I think we need to

  296. look at him as father and daring enough for us

  297. to be reminded that it starts off as daddy God.

  298. But never forget the fact that he is the judge.

  299. He determines what is right and what is wrong. And

  300. he's the king, the ruler who rules and reigns, sovereign

  301. and supreme. And this is how we should approach first

  302. and foremost. And then now you're ready to bring your

  303. needs to him. That's what is meant by acknowledging who

  304. he is first. And there are tree needs that I

  305. will highlight from this prayer that you need every day

  306. of your lives. They are not always the thing that

  307. we pray for, honestly, because most of the time what

  308. would we pray for. We always pray for health, right,

  309. all of us. The older I get, the more I've

  310. been praying for health. Seriously, health is not mentioned there.

  311. I mean, we always pray for physical safety and security

  312. for ourselves, for our families. It's a normal thing, but

  313. we don't always see it, and we don't see it there.

  314. We always pray for wealth. Why not, right, more money

  315. the marrier, I would say, But it's not there either.

  316. The three things that everybody needs every day are all

  317. actually said in this model prayer. And these are the

  318. three things. Is food, forgiveness and freedom. Okay, I'll break

  319. it out first and foremost we need food, yes we do.

  320. It's hard for us to pray the Lord's prayer and

  321. really mean it because all of us when we go home,

  322. we pop into our kitchen, open our pantry, open our

  323. fridge and there's a lot of food in there. We

  324. go to the supermarkets and like whoa, it's fully stopped.

  325. And not all of us pray this petition with meaning

  326. and further, Lord give me food. In fact, many of

  327. us forget to thank God for the food that we

  328. are eating. But the prayer is telling us to live

  329. one day at the time. Lord, give us, day by

  330. day the food that we need, because this is the

  331. least that we need. Men shall not live by bread alone.

  332. Just tells us that the least we need to survive

  333. on is food is brain. And in many countries in

  334. the world today a lot of people don't have even

  335. this basic necessity. And that's why it means so much. Lord,

  336. I need food. We need it, and we need to

  337. pray for it. Because one day prayer is also thanksgiving,

  338. and so I think we need to give thanks to

  339. the Lord for the food that he provides for us

  340. all the time. It's not a I'll do it when

  341. I remember. It's really a form of prayer acknowledging that Lord,

  342. thank you so much. Because once upon a time, those

  343. people used to get paid a daily wage, get paid

  344. on that day, get to eat on that day, don't

  345. get paid on that day, don't get to eat for

  346. that day. Give us this day our daily brain. That's

  347. what it means. And so food is the first thing

  348. that we need to always pray sustenance for us to live.

  349. Second thing is this forgiveness. Yes, we need forgiveness every day,

  350. every day. And I know that when we became Christians,

  351. most of us here, if we are believers, your sins

  352. were all forgiven, taken away. But you know subsequent sins

  353. requires repentance and requires God's forgiveness as well. It's not

  354. a blanket past, present, and future. That's why the scripture

  355. keeps telling us to confess our sins. The earnest prayer

  356. of a righteous one goes far, but we need to

  357. confess our sins and then God is faithful to forgive us.

  358. But there is this one clause in this prayer that

  359. Jesus taught his disciples that has a condition to it.

  360. As you confess that you have sined today, in using

  361. this prayer, you also confess that you have forgiven others today.

  362. It's actually a conditional prayer. It is obvious that you

  363. cannot be forgiven unless you forgive others. This is something

  364. that a lot of us missed out because we can't

  365. imagine God holding back forgiveness. But the truth is this.

  366. If you know, in giving your child something, they're going

  367. to misuse it. If your child, you give your child

  368. suits and then the child doesn't share in his siblings.

  369. Do you think you keep on giving your child suits

  370. whenever he or she asked no? You'll hold bad because

  371. you want them to learn to share, just as God

  372. wants us to learn how to forgive. And I can

  373. tell you this forgiveness is one of the hardest things

  374. to do. We want it, but we don't want to

  375. give it. So the parable that we always referred to

  376. as the one that had his debts forgiven but could

  377. not forgive the smaller debt that was owing to him,

  378. and the consequence was severe. Actually, so forgiveness we really need.

  379. You have to imagine it like an electric circuit, and

  380. it can only be completed when one hand hangs on

  381. to God, one hand hangs on to the people that

  382. we need to forgive, and it flows. When you forgive,

  383. you'll be forgiven, and you forgive, you'll be forgiven. It's

  384. a nice circuit, but I know it's not easy. I

  385. know many of us feel that we have been wrong

  386. and therefore we should not forgive others. But our function,

  387. our role, our responsibility, is to forgive. Do not hold

  388. this against anyone. God owes us nothing, but yet he

  389. loved us enough to forgive us, even though he did

  390. no wrong on his pad. Put yourself in his position

  391. because he did not need to meet. Forgive us out

  392. to this world that put him to death, made him suffer,

  393. even though he came to give us a way out.

  394. And we continue to do that even till today. But

  395. yet his forgiveness still falls freely. But we need to

  396. understand what forgiving others means. And you cannot have God's

  397. forgiveness if you are holding grudges or resentment against others.

  398. So the circuit must be complete, and then your daily

  399. need or forgive for forgiveness can be met by your

  400. heavenly Father. I assure you of this. I really believe

  401. that this is God's way and this is how He's

  402. teaching us. The third need is this our need for freedom.

  403. And it's not freedom politically, but freedom spiritually and morally.

  404. Freedom from temptation, freedom from the evil one, freedom from

  405. the worst slave master of it all, which is ourselves.

  406. We need freedom even from ourselves. You need to be

  407. free from all this, And so you pray, don't let

  408. me be tempted above what I can, don't let me

  409. be too too far. I want to be free from shame.

  410. I want to be free from guilt. I want to

  411. be free from fear. These are all these things that

  412. continue to plague us morally and spiritually, guilt, fear, shame,

  413. and daily we need to ask God God set us free,

  414. because that is what He has done for us once

  415. upon a time if we did not know who Jesus is,

  416. all of us only had one end, and that is destruction,

  417. eternal destruction. But the fact that we now have Christ

  418. in our lives, he has set us free from the

  419. destiny that we were bound to, which means that today

  420. we have a choice to do what is right. Once

  421. upon a time, it doesn't matter how much right you do,

  422. you are a ready on the road to destruction. But

  423. with Christ in our lives, now we have your choice

  424. to do what is right when it matters most. Now

  425. are we able therefore to choose to do what is right?

  426. That is why we need God's freedom in our lives. Amen.

  427. You know in the other version of the Lord's Prayer

  428. in the Gospel of Matthew, it ends with this, deliver

  429. us from the evil One. And I believe here is

  430. a reminder. If you begin your prayer thinking about God,

  431. you've got to somehow any by thinking about Satan. It's

  432. quite a thought, I know, but it's reality. Satan's name

  433. is mentioned in a prayer. We're not to pray to him.

  434. We are to pray against Satan because as you leave

  435. God's presence, and that's the reality of it. Because we

  436. will stop our prayers. We will leave God's presence and

  437. we will walk into where the world, which is Satan's realm.

  438. We are walking into a place where he is the

  439. prince of evil, the prince of darkness. And so we

  440. will walk into this world. And you need to be

  441. delivered from this world. That is why the prayer says,

  442. deliver us from the evil one. It is so important

  443. that we are in this world, but not of this world.

  444. And so every line in the Lord's prayer carries meaning.

  445. Another thing for us to consider is this one disciple

  446. asked for this prayer. One disciple was taught and given

  447. this prayer. Yet how he was taught to pray? Is

  448. our father? Interesting pronoun to use is a collective pronoun.

  449. Jesus didn't tag the disciple, okay ah, is how you pray?

  450. I my father? He didn't see my father, says our father.

  451. I think that's quite a revolution for our private prayers,

  452. because sometimes our private prayers can be too personalized. It's

  453. just me, myself and I. But here we are taught

  454. to say our we earth. And sometimes you think you

  455. are so unique. I kid you not. You are not

  456. only because you think about it. Every need that you

  457. have every sorrow, every burden, every trial, every frustration, every challenge.

  458. There are others of God's children who are also going

  459. through something exactly the same that you are going through.

  460. That is the reality of it. And so when you

  461. pray the Lord's prayer, pray our because it's a collective

  462. prayer for each other to stand firm. It's powerful. You

  463. are linking your prayer with so many others as a family,

  464. as brothers, and as sisters, all all climbing on Daddy

  465. God's highs to sit on and talk to him. Amen.

  466. The Lord's Prayer is a beautiful prayer that puts the

  467. language of humility on your lips and teaches you to

  468. come before God and acknowledge his name. Please notice this also,

  469. that all of that prayer is actually asking for something.

  470. This is the next part that I'm going to now

  471. go into and teach. And some people think that asking

  472. for things is a very childish form of prayer, and

  473. I don't blame them. Maybe sometimes we are thought to

  474. don't go into deep prayers, long prayers, meditate until everything

  475. is empty, how to pray when everything is empty? But

  476. sometimes we take it to a level that we don't

  477. even know where we are going. When prayer ultimately is

  478. as simple as ask, it is asking for some It

  479. is not childnged you because think about it. If you

  480. study every most of Jesus's prayer, and Jesus prayed many times,

  481. he talked to his father in heaven, they are always

  482. more often than not, asking for things. Let this cup

  483. pass me by. He's asking for something. Let the church

  484. be one, just like me and you are one. It

  485. is he's asking for something. I pray that Peter's faith

  486. will not diminish, that he will not fall. He's asking

  487. for something. Father, forgive them, for they know not what

  488. they do. He's asking for something. Prayer is asking at

  489. the heart of it. If you think about it, it

  490. is asking. And that's why we must always say please,

  491. thank you, and sorry every time we pray. Please make

  492. sure there are all those three operative words, please, thank you,

  493. and sorry. You see, a child's relationship to his parents

  494. includes asking for things that child cannot get. That's why

  495. a child has their parents there so what they can't get.

  496. It's actually essentially a relationship of asking, right, So never

  497. be afraid or a shame to us. Never let people

  498. tell you that this is a low form of prayer.

  499. If you're asking God for things, are you have not

  500. reached the pinnacle of your prayer life. Pinnacle of your

  501. prayer life is just pray, really pray every day. So

  502. never let people say that asking is the wrong way

  503. of praying. But asking for the right thing is very

  504. very important, Amen, because we worship a righteous God, which

  505. brings us to the second part of this lesson on prayer.

  506. If you you should expect an answer, right. I don't

  507. think all of us have conversations just for the sake

  508. of having conversations with no response. So if you're asking

  509. for something, then should it not also be for us

  510. to expect an answer. So it is actually vital to

  511. have answers to prayer because it is a two way thing.

  512. A lot of people get frustrated because no, they don't

  513. get the answer, or they don't get the answer they want,

  514. and then they just leave it at that. We are

  515. asking God. We are not just trying to condition ourselves

  516. to accept things as they are. We are asking God

  517. because prayer changes things so us. Like I said just now,

  518. prayer has changed God's mind. He has set out to

  519. do certain things, but true prayer he can turn things around.

  520. We should look to God to give us food and

  521. forgiveness and freedom and thank him when they come. So important,

  522. we should look to God to send his kingdom on

  523. earth to answer our prayers. When we ask God to

  524. demonstrate his power, we should expect him to do something

  525. about it. Prayer changes things. Amen. So, in other words,

  526. unanswered prayer is a problem for a believer. It is

  527. and I feel you all sometimes when you're like, ah,

  528. I God never answer my prayer. Okay, It is a

  529. problem because the point of praying is to get an answer, right,

  530. So we are now going to look at the reasons

  531. why some answers don't come, and here will discover Jesus

  532. gives us the conditions you see at the start of

  533. this versus, Jesus talk about the content of our asking prayer.

  534. That's what I mean by the content the first see. Subsequently,

  535. he is now going to speak of the conditions for

  536. God answering prayers. And I'm just going to read on

  537. because it's the same chapter. Reading on after verse four

  538. obviously it's verse five, I'm going to read verses five

  539. to eleven. It says this then then teaching them more

  540. about prayer. He used this story. Suppose you went to

  541. a friend's house at midnight wanting to borrow tree lows

  542. or break. You say to him, a friend of mine

  543. has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing

  544. for him to eat. And suppose he calls out from

  545. his bedroom, don't bother me. The door is locked for

  546. the night, and my family and I are all in bait.

  547. I can't help you, but I tell you this, though

  548. he won't do it for friendship's sake, If you keep

  549. knocking long enough, he will get up and give you

  550. whatever you need because of your shameless persistence. And so

  551. I tell you, keep on asking and you will receive

  552. what you ask for. Keep on seeking and you will fine.

  553. Keep on knocking, and the door will be open to you.

  554. For everyone who asks receives, everyone who seeks fines, and

  555. everyone who knocks the door will be opened. You, fathers,

  556. if your children ask for a fish, do you give

  557. them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg,

  558. do you give them a scorpion? Of course not so.

  559. If you, you sinful people, know how to give good

  560. gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly

  561. Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

  562. You will realize that one condition is on our side,

  563. one condition is on God's side. The condition on our

  564. side is simple. It's called shameless persistence. Persistence doesn't mean

  565. long prayer, but it does mean frequent prayer, going on

  566. until you get And and so you see in the

  567. middle is those days they go to bait fairly early.

  568. This is a story that was told. Everyone went to

  569. bait and then someone came at the door knocking. And

  570. in the middle is somehow hospitality is an important thing

  571. as well. So I can I can't imagine the annoyance

  572. of the houseowner when this chap comes knocking on the

  573. door asking to learn for brain and this flurt no shame,

  574. just kept on knocking, not the slightest bait, embarrassed, totally

  575. insensitive about the householder's feelings. He went on knocking until

  576. he was given the break. Jesus is not saying that

  577. God is a reluctant giver and no signs we always

  578. look at it all. This is terrible, or I see

  579. Jesus is like the houseownerf dragging his feet out of bait.

  580. Don't really want it? No, no no, no, no, no, don't don't

  581. don't focus on that, because the story is about the

  582. person who is knocking on the door. What he's teaching

  583. us here is the human side. It's true to prayer,

  584. and if you really mean business with God, you pray

  585. until you get it. You keep on knocking. That is

  586. why prayer is not I want the answers, or I

  587. want my answers, or I want The answer is pray

  588. until something happened. God is going to make sure something

  589. happens if you pray earnestly to him. Of course, you

  590. may be asking for the wrong thing, and that is

  591. where you have to hast what you are asking for

  592. with the Lord's prayer, with the content that I just

  593. told us just now. If you are praying for the

  594. right thing, it will come under one of those six

  595. hates that we studied. It will come under acknowledging his fatherhood,

  596. his purity, his power in our lives. It will come

  597. under food forgiveness of freedom, without a shadow of doubt.

  598. I believe in them because that is the prayer that

  599. the Lord taught us to pray. So you can always

  600. check whether you are praying for the right thing. And

  601. thank God he doesn't spoil us as his children. He

  602. doesn't always give us what we want. Do you know

  603. if we keep giving our children what they want, it's

  604. going to spoil them. You'll turn them into self entitled

  605. and very rotten people. That is the reality our God.

  606. It's not just someone science. We think, Oh, God, you're

  607. only good if whatever I ask for you give to me.

  608. Even we don't do it with our own children because

  609. we want them to learn, we want to also test

  610. them to make sure that they are doing and making

  611. the right choices asking for the right things. Amen. So

  612. if your prayer checks with the Lord's prayer, then go

  613. on knocking. That's my advice to you. Persistence is the

  614. condition on our part. You see in one of the

  615. greatest promises of prayer in the Bible, he said, keep

  616. on asking and you will receive. Keep on knocking and

  617. the door will be open. Keep on seeking and you

  618. will find. Not just ask ones, but keep on asking.

  619. Carry on. Persistence is vital for prayer on the human side.

  620. And then to balance up this story so that people

  621. don't think God is reluctant to give. Jesus now talks

  622. about providence. He talks about divine providence. He is actually

  623. willing to provide you with good things. So remember, persistence

  624. is our part, provedence is God's part. And you know,

  625. one of the things that stops people from praying and

  626. asking God for something is that they are afraid of

  627. what He might give them. I've met many people like that.

  628. I've known people who are afraid to ask for the

  629. gifts of the Holy Spirit. Why well, if you know

  630. what the gifts of the Holy Spirit are for, it

  631. is for the edification of the body. That means with

  632. the gifts, you cannot not do nothing. You must go

  633. and edify the body. That means mus stok. That must

  634. work one. No, God doesn't just give us gifts so

  635. that we can kill car God doesn't give us gifts

  636. so that we can sit down and shake legs. He

  637. gives us gifts because He wants us to be a blessing, blessed,

  638. to be a blessing. And that's why there are many

  639. who are afraid of what to ask, or afraid to

  640. ask things of God because they are reluctant to receive it.

  641. Don't ever be reluctant, especially the gifts of the Holy Spirit,

  642. especially the gift of the Holy Spirit. Important Jesus says,

  643. even you evil earthly fathers. You are all sinners, but

  644. you know how to give your children good things. You

  645. won't give them anything to harm them. If they ask

  646. for an agg you won't give them a scorpion. And

  647. so he says this. When you pray, think of this treewards.

  648. How much more have we ever thought of God's providence,

  649. divine providence? No, we always think that God is a

  650. stingy God, always holding back. Don't want to bless us

  651. with things? Give me more? No, we got to be very,

  652. very careful. How much more will your heavenly give you

  653. something good, something that's helpful. Do you think that God

  654. will give you something that's harmful? Now? So there may

  655. be persistence in our prayer, but sometimes there is the

  656. reluctance for us to receive, and we are sometimes afraid

  657. of what might happen. You know, sometimes we pray, Lord,

  658. send me anywhere, I'll go anywhere in the world. Now

  659. I used to joke, no content. Do you know that

  660. when you say send me anywhere, God will send you

  661. to Africa? Usually it's like that, right, send me anywhere,

  662. and then okay, off you go to Africa. Uh, maybe Africa,

  663. bit Father, maybe somewhere in more cosmopolity. I don't know,

  664. but our last teaching on answering answering prayer is this,

  665. and to me, the gift of the Holy Spirit is

  666. the answer to all of our prayers. It is it

  667. is a prayer that the Father loves to answer, because

  668. that is the greatest gift he could give you, next

  669. to the gift of his son. And that's why it's

  670. tighten if you read the scriptures that now after telling

  671. the story about the the Landlord and the person knocking

  672. at the door, and then he goes on the door

  673. with usks sick and not, and then he goes on

  674. to compare earthly fathers and the Heavenly Father, and then

  675. he ends with this statement, how much more will your

  676. Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit? Very specific to those

  677. who ask him the Holy Spirit? This is what the

  678. Lord wants us to know how he can provide for us.

  679. He wants to give us the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  680. To give you Jesus to die for you on the

  681. cross is a great gift. To give you the spirit

  682. to live in you is also a great gift and

  683. gift that you should pray for. And so this is

  684. something that I want to encourage all of us. Don't

  685. resist the Holy Spirit. Don't think the Holy Spirit is

  686. just someone as far as God the Father and Jesus,

  687. because where is God the Father and where is Jesus, Well,

  688. they are actually sitting next to each other in the heavenies.

  689. There are the scriptures tell us that the only person

  690. in the God here that we have here with us

  691. right now is the Holy Spirit. That is why Jesus,

  692. very very clearly in his teachings told us that I

  693. have to go because he knew that he was limited

  694. in his physical form, that he could not be with

  695. every believer for all times. But he came for one purpose,

  696. to sek and save those who are lost, to die

  697. for their sins, and he accomplished it. But he said thereafter,

  698. I can't be the one that is living in each

  699. and every one of you. But there is someone who can,

  700. and there is someone who will come, and that someone came.

  701. But until today, many Christians resist the Holy Spirit in

  702. our lives. Don't resist the Holy Spirit is what I

  703. am encouraging us, not in our theology, not in our

  704. physical acceptance or rejection. Be careful how we think of

  705. the Holy Spirit, because he is here and he wants

  706. to live in us so that we can continue to

  707. build each other up. The Holy Spirit was never introduced

  708. to the church so that it can break the church up.

  709. It is to bring us all together. We all need

  710. the Holy Spirit in our lives. Amen. So remember these

  711. are the conditions for our prayers to be answered. Very important. Persistence,

  712. keep on persisting, don't give up so easily. Don't pray

  713. one time, two times, in fact, don't stop at two hundred.

  714. Pray until something happens. That is my encouragement. And remember

  715. God is the provider of all things good and the

  716. most wonderful gift that he wants to give to us.

  717. I pray we will receive that first. Because when we

  718. learn how to receive the Holy Spirit into our lives,

  719. that is when we are able to receive all of

  720. God's other blessings in our lives. That is my honors

  721. and sincere belief. And we have come to the third one,

  722. and I'm drawing towards the end. The third part is this,

  723. how can we therefore make our prayers effective? And again

  724. here's a reminder. Never think of prayer as quantitative, but

  725. you must always look at it from a qualitative viewpoint.

  726. And I stand here sometimes, you know, having to apologize

  727. because I to pray long prayers sometimes, but I pray

  728. that long prayers. It is not something to discourage us

  729. from praying, because it's not. It's not about that. God

  730. never wants us to go long. He's always sayings. We

  731. think the longer we pray for the person, the more

  732. effective that. Jesus says, No, he says, you will not

  733. be heard for your much praying or for your many words.

  734. So it is not true that the longer you pray

  735. for someone, the more effective your intercession is. Is not

  736. or Likewise, to think quantitatively sometimes to think, now, the

  737. more people I can get to pray this prayer, the better. No,

  738. so we have all get more people pray. No, no, no, no,

  739. it's not that as well. If we are thinking sometimes quantitatively,

  740. we always think that the more names you put to

  741. a petition, the more way it carries, and then God

  742. will listen. But I kid you not when I say this,

  743. God only ever looks for one name in any petition

  744. that comes his way, and that is the name of Jesus.

  745. That's why we pray in the name of Jesus, because

  746. that is the only name that counts in that petition,

  747. not the many others who are praying. By having said that,

  748. the more people that you get to pray deeply, the better.

  749. That's why I say prayer is not just the length

  750. of it is how deep you go. So quality prayer,

  751. effective prayer is not just a hundred people praying. It's

  752. actually even ten people who are praying very deeply for

  753. a particular person. That is how it becomes effective. So

  754. what is deep prayer? And I'll tell you this, A

  755. deep prayer is basically a prayer that caused the person something.

  756. The effectiveness of your prayer for someone else is actually

  757. in direct ratio of what it caused you. And I

  758. believe that is why when Jesus came down from the

  759. mountain and then he met his disciples, and the disciples

  760. complained to him and they say, Lord, we can't seem

  761. to help this child somehow, it's so difficult, so challenging.

  762. And then Jesus's respond was, don't you realize that this

  763. kind of situation can only be dealt with by prayer

  764. and fasting. Fasting is prayer, honestly, Actually, in some of

  765. the manuscripts, this particular scripture or meets the word fasting.

  766. But yet in the Old Testament, if you read the

  767. Old Testament, you will see that fasting is prayer because

  768. sometimes it doesn't repeat by saying they pray and fast.

  769. Sometimes it just says they fast for something. Know, whether

  770. it's in Esther or in Nehi Maya, or in Ezra

  771. or in Joel or in second sermon. You see it

  772. on all these occasions. It doesn't say pray and fast,

  773. It just says fast because fast thing is a form

  774. of prayer. If we miss out on fast thing, we

  775. essentially miss out on prayer. And fast thing is the

  776. price of prayer. Actually, that's why we keep encouraging people

  777. to fast. It's important. In other words, you miss the

  778. costs out of it. It did not cause you anything

  779. to pray for this person. And that is the place

  780. of fasting in prayer, because it is costing you something.

  781. It is costing you your meal. The only other marriage

  782. in spending a long time praying for someone is that

  783. it costs us time, and time is precious. And that's

  784. why I say sometimes time is important for us because

  785. it cost us as well. But fasting automatically will cause

  786. us something unless all of you fast so easily, you

  787. got no problems. It's like a fasting like nothing like that.

  788. I can go on this three und sixty five days. Noah,

  789. trust me, I have not. Everyone becomes hungry when we

  790. ask them to fast somehow, even if you know me

  791. are not. That's the reality of it, because it costs

  792. you something. What did it cause you to pray? Well,

  793. the deepest cause is this. You think about it. When

  794. a woman touched the hem of Jesus's garment and was healed,

  795. goodness went out of him. If you have really prayed

  796. for someone, some of your resources have left you and

  797. traveled to the other person. Power has gone from God,

  798. but goodness has gone from you because you were good enough,

  799. kind enough to pray for that person, and God's power

  800. and your goodness is then met in that person's life. Therefore,

  801. if you have really prayed for someone, you should usually

  802. feel drained. You usually feel tired because prayer is warfare.

  803. Prayer is an act. Prayer is something that you endeavored

  804. to go through willingly, and it will exhaust you. But

  805. yet we have a God who is ever ready to

  806. provide us of all our needs, ready to replenish us

  807. when we are exhausted. We hope you've been blessed by
