God's Calling | Jason Martin

You're listening to a message to go from axt church. We hope this message

will light up your day. Today's message. It's actually, if if I

look back right in the series of messages that have been preaching, probably over

the past six months or more, right somehow, right when I prepared this,

I I was like, wow, everything seems to tie in together,

you know, in experiencing God more and more. Okay, So today's sermon

title, if I put it on the screen, God's calling, God's calling.

Okay, So we can say it as like God's calling you or what's

God's calling for my life? You know, both ways, God is still

calling you, you know, uh. And calling is something that all of

us desire or we want a super clear uh understanding of what our calling in

life is. You know, if you go to the bookshop, like most

of the thing is What's My Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, you know

that book is one of the top sales because everyone wants to know what's our

purpose? What's our calling? Why am I on earth here for? What

my talents? What has God given me? What am I supposed to use

for His glory? And what am essentially am I important? But today what

I'm here to tell you is Yes, you are important. God has a

plan. God has a call for you, and God is calling you.

Okay, again, like a phone call, it's up to us whether we

want to answer it or not. So how many of you want to know

what is God's calling for your life? How many already know what God's calling

for your life? Some we know? Right, you don't have to be

shy on And the thing is, this is not what I realized when I

was preaching this, right, this is not a one of things, because

God's calling continue, It's not a one of Uh. God speaks to you

one time and then you're calling, you know you're calling, and then that's

clear. But as you go through every stage of your life, right,

God is constantly calling us to live out his plans and purposes for us.

So our calling continuously evolves and expands if we walk in alignment with him.

Okay, So before I go into the points, I give you a bit

of background, not background differentiation. Next line. So there is a general

calling and a specific calling. So general calling all of us. If you

call yourself a disciple of Christ, we have a general calling. How many

of you identify as a Christian. You identify as a Christian, you have

a calling and God's because if you identify as a Christian, it means that

you are living out You have to live your life under a specific way that

God wants us to live. Okay, and specific calling is tailor ma to

you, tailor me to you, meaning your skill set, your upbringing,

where you were born, who you're parents, world, your skills, your

experience, and only you can live out that specific calling for your life.

Nobody else can live that out for you. So if we go into general

calling next life, what are some of the general calling? First Thessalonians for

verse seven, God has called us to live holy lives, not in pure

lives. So if you're paying attention to Bastard Julian's sermon last week, what

is holy? Holy is set apart, set apart, So holy just means

set apart. That means you do not live like how the world wants you

to live and how the world wants you to live. The standard of the

world continuously changes. It continuously changes, not for the better. Have you

realiz that the standard for the world continuously changes, but it changes for the

worst. It keeps on deteriorating, but if we say we are set apart,

we are living by God's standard. And God's standard is the same yesterday,

today, and forever. So that's one of our general calling. Just

give you a few examples. Okay, Next another general calling Philippians for verse

thirteen. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it yet,

but I focus on this one thing forgetting the past and looking forward to

what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and

receive the heavenly prize for which God, True Christ Jesus is calling us.

We are called to finish well. We are not just called to start well.

We are called to finish well. So it is a marathon. I

think I've shared before on how a marathon race looks like running, and we

are called to finish well. It doesn't matter how good we start. But

at the end of our life, how did we finish? What will be

set to us or about us at our funeral? Would it glorify God or

not? Would we have brought people closer to God or not? Would our

lives be a living testimony for Him? Right? Next first Speeder three.

Finally, all of you should be of one mind sympathize with each other,

love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble

attitude. Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults when people instult

you, instead pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has

called you to do, and He will grant you his blessing. This is

tough, This is tough, but this is the general calling for all of

us. If all of us identify as a Christian, this is what God

has called us to do. And honestly, this is tough. It is

easy to love your friends, but is it I read this quote it is

easy to love Jesus, But is it easy to love Judas? Wow?

Because Judas was the enemy. But what does the scriptures say here? Love

each other, do not repay evil for evil? You know? And for

us are we? We are called to love each other. And this is

a general calling. So if if you even do not know your specific calling,

just living out the general calling of God would already bring us closer to

God. So again, just now I ask you all, how many of

y'all know your specific calling of God? Some raise your hands, some not,

But all of us have all this calling, and this is just a

few examples. If you go through the whole scripture, there's a lot of

other things that God has called us to do, and the main thing is

to live a holy life, which is set apart to him. Okay,

then I go to the next slide. For you have been called to live

in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don't use your freedom to satisfy

your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another. For

the whole law can be summed up in one command. Love your neighbor as

yourself. See all this right starts. You have been called. You have

been called, and God has called us. A lot of times we say

that God has not spoken to me yet. I do not know what my

calling is, so I will pray and wait. Guess what. There's a

book for it. It's called the Bible. If you read it, you

were fine. What is your calling? It's all over the Bible, and

this one is to serve one another in love, not to serve one in

another for selfish desire. We live in a world where it's state for tad.

I will scratch your back if you scratch mine, But would you serve

one someone who is not able to repay you. Right, this is what

God has called us to do, all right, next life. So now

it's specific calling. So there's not a general calling, So specific calling,

specific calling. Galatians one. Even before I was born, God chose me

and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal his

son to me so that I would proclaim the good news about Jesus to the

gentiles. This is such a powerful scripture. Can you believe it? If

you read it right? No one is a mistake, No one is an

accident. God has chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. And

this is a promise. If we cling onto this, our identity will be

in Christ. So this is a specific call. All our fingerprints are unique,

or our iris or eyes anything that people use for a security check nowadays,

Why is it able to be used as a security check? Because it

is unique? He imagine that in the whole world, right, nobody can

forge that unless they like cut you off. You watch all the spy movies,

right, dig out the eye anyway? But I digress. So this

is one and Jeremiah one, verse five, I knew you before I formed

you in your mother's womb, before you were born, I set you apart

and appointed you as my profit to the nature. So again, before you

were born, I set you apart. So God makes no mistakes. Humans

make mistakes. But even though humans make mistakes, God can use it for

his glory. And God is ever powerful. Right again, He has a

plan for each and every one of us. Don't you say God has a

plan for me? God? Then I didn't even say God has a plan

for you. So this just with this understanding, right, if God reveals

that to you, even if just that that phrase, God has a plan

to me for me, if you just ask God to reveal that in it

full essence to you, that is already life changing. That is life changing.

Okay, So now that was my introduction. I just want to give

you a bit of context. What is calling God's calling the different general calling,

specific calling? Because before we go into our specific calling, I want

to say that all of us, the moment we leave this room today,

there is already a call of God that we have to do. You cannot

say that I don't have God's call. I don't know. I'm still waiting.

I just showed you there is a general calling. If we identify as

Christians, we identify as disciples of Christ, there is a call in our

lives. So next line, what is my calling? So there are four

seas, four seas for this sermon, and I will cover in extent.

I think the first two seas I will cover a bit more, and probably

the last two seas I will touch on it. But I think there is

another sermon in it somewhere as well. So let's go through it. Right,

So what I talk about calling? So what is calling? We talked

so long about calling already, So what is calling? What is calling?

Have we all thought about it? Is it something that you feel? I

feel? Occupation? Okay, am, I give you a dictionary. Next

slide. This is from the Merriam Webster Dictionary. Calling a strong inner impulse

towards a particular cause of action, especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence.

This is heavy, right, This is heavy. It is you have

that nudging within you, and that nudging is put there by God. That

is a calling. That is a calling. And some of you might have

experienced it. Some of you might not yet, but I am sure you

would have. It's just that you might not have recognized it. So today,

even as I go through the scripture, right, use this to probably

reflect in your life circumstances or situations where he actually that was God calling me

to do something. Okay. So the story that I'm gonna take from today

is from Gideon. Y'all know Gideon. Gideon is very famous from for testing

God. You know. He put the fleece outside and say that if the

fleece is wet and the ground is dry, then I believe it's you.

Then after God did that, then he said, okay, God, now

if the fleece is dry and the ground is wet, then I believe it's

you. Then God did that also, right, That's one of the famous

things. So let's read scripture. Okay. Next, Yes, Judges six,

So when they cried out to the Lord, so this is the Israelites.

This is the Israelites that day. Here is Israel. When they cried

out to the Lord. Because of Median, the Lord sent a prophet to

the Israelites. He said, this is what the Lord, God of Israel

says, I brought you out out of slavery in Egypt. I rescued you

from the Egyptians and from all who oppressed you. I drove your enemies and

gave you their land. I told you, I am the Lord, your

god, you must not worship the gods of the emords in whose land you

now live. But you have not listened to me. Okay, we stop

here first, so a bit of context. The Israelites were under constant attack,

constant attack by who, the Median Knites. So what will happen,

right, is if the Israelites plant anything, the Median Knites will come.

And they were saying, if you read the scriptures earlier, they will come

like locusts. They were, come, take everything and leave the Israelights with

nothing. So they couldn't plant, They couldn't all their livestock also will be

stolen everything. Basically, they are being ravaged and they were in desperation.

So this is why they called out to God. But the Lord sent a

prophet and told the Israelites this. Okay, next verse, Then the Angel

of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Oprah, which belonged

to Joash of the clan of Aviser. Gideon, son of Joash was thrashing

wheat at the bottom of the wine press to hide the grain from the media

nights. The Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, mighty Hero,

the Lord is with you. Okay, I think we have read this.

If you've been in church, you've probably seen this. So there are

a few things that we want to unpack here. So Gideon was trashing the

wheat. Where was he thrashing the wheat in the bottom of the wine press?

So when you trash the weat, I think if you would be aware

some you would have heard some preachers share about it. Most of the time

you trash the wheat in an open area, so that all the husk and

all the things will be blown away, and what will be left is the

wheat. When you trash it in a wine press, it is very difficult.

But why did he do that. He did it because he was hiding.

He didn't want the media knites to do it, because you do it

in open air, you know. Once he finished all the hard work,

the media knights come take all the wheat gone. So he was in hiding.

He was scared, and he was in desperation trying to get a bit

of food wheat, And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said,

mighty Hero, the Lord is with you. Wow. Imagine the Angel

of the Lord appears to you right now and says, mighty hero, the

Lord is with you. What will you respond? How would you respond?

Sure? How many said sure? Most of the time, right, you'll

be like who you talking to? You're looking around? Are you talking to

me? Or you'll be like, I think you got the wrong person.

You know, But if you look at this right, this was a time

where Gideon was in the lowest of low He was in desperation, and God

called out to him, mighty hero, the Lord is with you. So

a lot of times God's calling comes to us in our lowest moments, in

our desperation, and we do not recognize it. Because Gideon, he was

like mighty Hero. God's calling was very clear. He says, here,

right, and before I go any for there right? If you go to

the verse behind one slight back, you see verse eight, the Lord send

a prophet to the Israelites. Okay, so God wanted to speak to the

Israelight, he sent a prophet. But when he spoke to Gideon, next

line, the Angel of the Lord appeared to him. How come the difference?

How come to the Israelites? God sent a prophet and how come to

Gideon away the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon. It is because Gideon

knew God, and this is how it ties back to what I have sad

before. Next line. Gideon knew the manifest presence of God. The Israelites

only knew the omnipresence of God. They knew God was there, but they

didn't know him personally. That's why the God had sent a prophet to speak

to them. But for Gideon, he knew the manifest presence of God.

He knew God personally. So before you even get your calling, do you

know God? You cannot fast track it first. You know, sometimes we

just shortcut because you want to know calling. Most of the time we want

to know calling because what is our purpose and what will make me look good?

You know, so that I can achieve and become popular or famous.

But you see here, for Gideon, he had to and he had to

know the manifest presence of God. He had to know who God is.

And then God's Angel appeared to him and told him his calling. Okay,

so that's the first see calling, So before you know God before, Yeah,

you have to know God first, and then he will speak to you

of your calling. Next see courage courage. So after you get your calling,

how do you respond to it? How do you respond to your calling?

So next night there's the reason why I put that picture. I explained

it later. Okay, So judge six. So this is Gideon replying to

the angel. Sir Gideon replied, if the Lord is with us, why

has all this happened to us? And where all the miracles our ancestors told

us about, didn't They say? The Lord brought us up out of Egypt,

and now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Median

Knights. Then the Lord turned to him and said, go with the strength

you have and rescue Israel from the Median Knights. I am sending you.

Okay, next, but Lord Gideon replied, again, how can I rescue

Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manners, say,

and I am the least in my entire family. The Lord said to

him, I will be with you, and you will destroy the midianize as

if you were fighting against one man. This is what. So after God

gave Gideon a calling, how do he respond? You know? When Gideon

looked in the mirror what he see. He probably if he was a cat,

he's he probably saw a mouse. How do we see ourselves? Okay?

So next line, how do you view God? And how do you

view yourself? Because these are the two important questions that after God has given

you your calling? Right, this is when you have to step into your

calling. To step into your calling, you need courage, and courage is

determined by how you view God and how you view yourself. So what do

I mean by that? Okay? If you go the two slides back back

back one more? Ah, yeah, correct, listen. Okay, So

this was the first one, first response that Gideon gave. If the Lord

is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all

the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn't they say? The Lord has

brought us out of Egypt? And now the Lord has abandoned us and handed

over us over to the Midian Nights. So how did Gideon view God?

He was probably disappointed. Maybe he didn't have that much faith in God.

His view of God has been distorted by what is happening around So that was

his view of God. But how did God respond? God didn't even acknowledge

him. God just said, God, don't even like sometimes you complain,

right, and then God just said go. He didn't even like. God

didn't try and defend himself at all. You know, Gideon just wanted to

vent probably, and then God just said go okay. So that is how

he viewed God. Okay. Then now after that, what he didn't say?

But God? Gideon replied, how can I rescue Israel? My klan

is the weakest of in the whole tribe of Mennes, say, and I

am leased in my entire family. How did Gideon view himself as weak as

I can't do it? It's impossible. You got the wrong person. And

how many of us have responded that way? You know, we because how

we view God determines how we view ourselves, and how we view ourselves determines

whether we can do what God has called us to do. You see that?

And what? So the second point is courage, right, So what

steals courage? Thanks next life? Yeah, so it's discourage. This courage

is to deprive of courage or confidence. So there is something that is stealing

your courage. There is something that is stealing your courage and your confidence.

Be it your courage and confidence in God, all your courage and confidence in

men. And there are a few things next night. Abandonment, discouragement,

pain, fear, anger, bitterness, abandonment. Remember Gideon said, God,

didn't our ancestors say that last time you did this for us and did

that for us? How come now we are being persecuted. Gideon felt abandoned,

and because he was abandoned, he was discouraged. You know, he's

discouraged. Is like, I don't have to discourage again. You're removing courage

from it, and you are weak the moment you discourage somebody here, Right,

That's why our words are very powerful. Are we encouraging people or are

we discouraging people? Discouraging is we are killing people's courage and sometimes right,

you know who kills our courage the most ourselves. You know, when people

say, hey, you can do it, I cannot. Other people think

you can, know you say cannot. And most of the time we are

our worst enemy. We are our worst enemy, and without courage, we

cannot do what God has called us to do. Okay, pain, he

was he didn't have food. You know he probably has been persecuted. Fear,

anger, and bitterness. So all these kinds of things right can discourage

us and kill our courage. And that's why it is very important for us

that all these external factors do not determine how we view God. Our view

of God should be this should be stepfast God, no matter what, you

are a good God. You have a good plan for me, and I

can do all things to Christ, who strengthens me. That was how shadracked

Micheck and abadigo God. Even if God does not come true, I will

still not bow down. That is called courage. Were they scared, yes,

but the courage is what kept them moving forward? Yeah. And this

couragement can cause us two next line, miss God's call. God will repeatedly

call us. He will repeatedly call us and we can repeatedly miss his call

because of discouragement because of how we view God, because of how we view

ourselves. And at the end, who loses, we lose and God's purposes

God would have to use somebody else and we may not achieve God's plans and

purposes for us. So when you are discouraged, when you are down and

God has called you, all of us have gone through tough times. Some

of us may be going through tough times right now. But you know that

God speaks the loudest during tough times. It's whether we choose to hear it.

So when we are going through tough times, we have to ask God,

what are you trying to tell me? What is your call for my

life right now? And when you hear that, you do what he calls

you to do. So, when you're afraid and you rehieve God's call,

what do you do next line? Do it afraid. I'm not asking you

to like, don't be afraid. Do it although you are afraid, do

it? Move forward because fear paralyzes you. Have you heard that fear paralyzes

you, But don't allow that fear to paralyze us. We have to move

forward. So sometimes right like I heard this phrase from us listening to the

radio. So this I think this family had young children and stuff like that.

So the parents, I think they wanted to do a spot. You

know, it was like a bit of extreme spot kind of thing. So

the daughter was I'm afraid. So the mom just replied and said, let's

all do it afraid. So she didn't dismiss the fear. The fear is

real, you know. Sometimes we're like, ye, no need be free

I think we're scared, you know, But when someone come talk to you

and say let's do it afraid, we acknowledge it and we empathize and we

say let's come around and let's move forward. I'm scared, you're scared,

but we are doing what God called us to do. And God's calling most

of the time will cause us to be afraid. You know. All the

different things, anger, discouragement, fear, all that, right, everything

is based on the call. Emotion of all those feelings is fear. You

have lost something, You have mismatched expectations, which cause you to fear.

Everything is based on fear. All those are secondary emotions, you know,

and that will cripple you. But what God is asking us to do it

afraid. God is with you. He didn't say to go with his own

strength, he asked, he said, what did he say in the reverse?

Go? I will go with you, and you will defeat them as

they as though they are one man, because God is with him. Okay,

So next line. That night, the Lord said, Gideon, take

the second bowl from your father's herd, the one that is seven years old,

pull down your father's altar to bow, and cut down the astra pole,

sitting beside it, and then build an altar to the Lord your God

here on this hill top century laying the stones, carefully, sacrifice the bowl

as a burnt offering on the altar, using as fuel the wood of the

astra pole you cut down. Okay, let's stop here first. So the

israel Lights were still worshiping idols, and Gideon's father was also one of the

idol worshipers. So what did God tell Gideon to do? Go and take

down the pole and destroy it. Can you imagine if you God tells you

that and then go and destroy? Are your parents alter and pull down?

So what did Gideon do next? Lighte So Gideon took ten of his servants

and did as the Lord had commanded. But he did it at night because

he was afraid. Gideon did it afraid, but he did it. So

if you need friends, bring friends ten friends, you need, you need

morals apart you need, you need, do it afraid Gideon moved forward.

God's calling was that he was afraid, so he did it at night.

Lot, Okay, Godian tell you do daytime or whatever. So he had

to manage his fear. But he still had to be obedient and That's what

he did. So you see that. And even as Gideon did that,

right, what happened, Even as he stepped forward with courage? This is

my third point next life, God increased his capacity. The first act of

courage that Gideon had to do was to tear down that. If he didn't

tear down that, he cannot conquer the Median Knights. Hey, you cannot

stand up to your father? Then how you're going to take out an army?

So our calling right may be big? What was God's calling to Gideon?

Take down the Median Nite army as though they are one man? The

calling is super big. And sometimes God's calling to you will feel like that's

super big. I don't know how I'm going to do it, but God

will just tell you to take one step at a time. Every step you

take increases your capacity and your dependency on God. And slowly, what happened

next light The Lord told Gideon, with this three hundred men, I will

rescue you and give you victory over the Median Nights. Send all the others

home. So Gideon collected the provisions rams horns of the warriors and send them

home, But he kept the three hundred men with him next light. The

Medianite camp was in the valley just before, just below Gideon. That night,

the Lord said, get up, go down into the Medianite camp,

for I have given you victory over them. But if you are afraid to

attack, go down to the camp with your servant poorer. Listen to what

the Medianites are saying. You will be greatly encouraged and you will be eager

to attack. Gideon didn't. I mean, he still has fear, but

he didn't stop him. You know, from thirty thousand men, now he's

three hundred men. You're scared, Not I scare. I'm going against a

huge army. From thirty thousand men, now I got three hundred men.

Will youve be scared? Of course you're scared. But the Bible is so

good that it shows that Gidian was a man. He was afraid, and

God acknowledges that he's afraid. He didn't say, hey, you no faith,

achoose somebody else. But God spoke to Gideon and said that if you

are afraid, go down and listen, and you'll be incage. And you

see it right from coming from destroying the poll to this battle, right,

can you imagine the stretching that Gideon had the increased capacity that Gideon had,

And it only can happen if, first of all, we have the manifest

presence of God, and then God speaks to us through his calling, we

have the courage to obey. God will stretch us and increase our capacity,

and the last see is conquered. And that is what Gideon did from calling

to conquer. So next line judges it. Then the Israelites said to Gideon,

be our ruler. You and your son and your grandson will be our

rulers, for you have rescued us from the Median But Gideon replied, I

will not rule over you, nor my will, nor will my son.

The Lord will rule over you. From chapter six to chapter eight, Gideon

is a change man, and he achieved God's calling for his life and for

the Israelites. And you see here right remember in chapter six. In chapter

six, God said, mighty hero, right, mighty hero. How did

Gideon respond? Gideon was like giving all the excuses, but right now when

the Israelites asked him to be the ruler, how did Jon respond? I

will not rule over you nor my son, but the Lord will rule over

you. His view of God and his view of himself changed completely. He

knew that God was in control. And because God is in control, I

will submit to him and I will say, yes, I will rule you

according to God's will. Men. So even as I draw to a close,

right, I was telling you earlier that everything sort of tied together,

Right, I want to know this my last light. You'll remember this light.

You know I had this. I had a whole summon series on this.

So how this calling tie into this? Do you know that at each

of the valleys, right? God is calling us. At each of the

valley, each of the pits that we are in, God has a call

for us, and it will take us courage to answer that call, and

then God will stretch our capacity and cause us to conquer that valley and go

up to the next peak. So God's calling, we have to have the

many first presence of God. We have to constantly be in tune with him

so that we know God's calling for every season of our life, and then

we can live from strength to strength, from glory to glory. Man.

So I think I told you all that I am preaching out off a journey

that I'm going through. Right, So I think ours it's an open secret

that we are. We are facing a lot of different challenges, both Jazz

and myself with parenting. It is really tough. I'm telling you it's really

tough, no joke. And a lot of times we'll be asking like,

why why are we going through this? You know what? The same as

Gideon, why are we going through this? But God, I thought,

you say your promises are this? I thought, I'm serving you, this

is But God says, just move forward, you know, And then we

say that, but we can't do it. We try everything on our own

strength, we can't do it. And then what did God answered the Gideon

with you you can conquer this with like you conquered the million lives as though

they were one man. And that is the promises that right now we are

holding onto. We have a different we are going through a different season.

Right now. We're probably in one of the PIDs, and we want to

get out of a pit. And but right now, the only way we

can get out of the pit is to understand and to listen to what is

God calling us to do. I think Jess was mentioning, I think probably

God wants us to have a pH d in parenting. Because I tell you,

really, I think we have like read, don't know how many books,

we have to like talk to so many people. Yeah, but I

think probably God is calling us to have another level of understanding of parenting and

it's it's uh, probably that's the thing. And until our capacity is expanded,

we will now ever conquer so we can What we came to realize is

that it is not going to go away unless we increase in capacity true God's

strength, so that we can conquer this, so that he we can go

to the next level that He has for us. So that's what I'm saying.

You may be going through different challenges, and true the challenges right is

when God speaks to us, we have to take time to listen. Take

time to listen, don't I mean if you are afraid, you're afraid?

Are we afraid? We are afraid? We are fear. I told you

fear is the main thing. But let's do it afraid. Know that God

is with us through it all, through it all. So that's why for

us, right, we are not backing up. I can tell you honestly,

why am I here after the event. I'm not going to back down,

you know, I'm going to do it afraid. I'm going to do

what God wants me to do, and I want to encourage y'all. You

know, whatever circumstance, whatever situations, you're going through it afraid, do

it with God. With God, all things are possible. So all of

us want to be like Gideon. So Gideon has a bad rap. You

know, most people say that he's Gideon was a scady kid. But actually

Gideon is like each and every one of us. All of us have feared.

But let's be like Gideon. Because in Hebrews eleven right, Gideon was

one of the first names mentioned as a man of faith. So let's be

Gideon's morning. We may be going through a tough time, we may be
