  1. You're listening to a message to go from acts church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. I've got a message that I prepared. They've been sharing,

  4. well most of it this month, from the Book of Hebrews.

  5. It's okay, it might go a little bit deep again. Sorry.

  6. I apologize first, because I know sometimes people see me

  7. and the fear of God comes upon them because they

  8. know they're going to get some long lecture. But let's

  9. let's let's go to God's word. Hebrews is a portion

  10. of scriptures, a chapter, not a chapter, but the book

  11. that means quite a fair bit to me personally. And

  12. how this message came about was I was actually reminded

  13. a few many, many years ago when I went for

  14. my first ever youth camp. Okay, I went for a

  15. youth camp. This was when I was sixteen, and when

  16. I was sixteen men that it was almost twenty years ago.

  17. Then I first went to a youth cam. It was

  18. organized by one of the bigger churches here in the

  19. Klang Valley and we went up to peace Haven. You

  20. know where peace Haven is, It's in guent Thing and

  21. it was a massive camp. It was like, I don't

  22. know four hundred youths for that time, just yous. It

  23. was insane, but it was also really literally an insane camp.

  24. It was wild. It was one of those camps where

  25. it opened my eyes so white. So many things happened.

  26. It's this recorded, is not recorded. It's not like it's recorded,

  27. but not that. I won't mentioned too much of what happened.

  28. But yeah, it was just one of those. I remember

  29. I was the camp command, not camp command, and I

  30. was the dom leader. So there were so many domes

  31. because it was four hundred people, so they had different groups.

  32. So I was one of the leaders. Uh. And in

  33. my dorm were the rascals of the rascals uh, the

  34. ones that actually, you know, after midnight they climb over

  35. the gates of peace Haven to go to gun Thing

  36. uh and try their luck in the casino, whatever that

  37. they can get in. Uh. It was. It was insane. Seriously,

  38. I remember I had everything that I brought of value

  39. stolen uh in that camp. Uh. It was I remember

  40. there was a perfume that was stolen, money that was stolen.

  41. So so I was like, oh goodness, it was. It

  42. was really an eye opener. But the last day of

  43. the camp, I think the time, the leadership already knew

  44. that something was amissed and uh they did almost like

  45. an alter call of repentance, uh and told people, know,

  46. whatever contraband that you're brought that you should not have

  47. brought to this camp, can you please uh bring it

  48. here now and just get rid of it. And the

  49. things that came out or yeah, I won't even mentioned

  50. all of it, but you know, from booze to sigarettes

  51. to the whole works things that I my eyes littered

  52. up when I was as a sixteen years and I'm like,

  53. oh even that. Yeah. So, but it was at that

  54. camp that this speaker actually left a Bible verse. The

  55. speaker of the camp left a Bible verse. In my know,

  56. you had those camp books and everyone signs autographs, YadA, YadA,

  57. and so he left a verse in there, which I remember,

  58. I didn't see. Idea. I came back, Yeah, I came.

  59. I came back home, and then I looked at it.

  60. And when you put the Hebrews is from Hebrews, chapter ten,

  61. verse thirty four, and I'll read you that verse. Uh, okay,

  62. I need my specs. And that verse actually says this

  63. you suffered along with those who were thrown into jail,

  64. and when all your own was taken from you, you

  65. accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things

  66. waiting for you that will last forever. You know, when

  67. I was a kid and I read and I'm like,

  68. why in the world? Okay? And first did he leave

  69. me with? Of course I didn't see everything else. I

  70. just saw it going to jail part like you suffer

  71. with those going to jail. I'm like, why do I

  72. need to suffer with those going to jail? So it

  73. got me thinking quite a fair bit. And then ever since,

  74. of course, you know, I always learned not to just

  75. read scriptures as it is, but also understand the context

  76. of it. And this is a scripture that a portion

  77. of scripture that I've kept close to my heart. So

  78. I'm going to be teaching from Hebrews chapter ten today. Okay,

  79. he Brews Chapter ten the kids? Is it Family Sunday today? Okay? Good?

  80. Because if the kids were supposed to take notes and

  81. not God bless them as well, probably not going to happen.

  82. He Brews chapter ten. Okay. So if we study the

  83. Book of Hebrews, I think we need to have this

  84. as the background for a bit of understanding of what

  85. this letter is really about and the author of Hebrews,

  86. no one knows. Until today, it is still left up

  87. to conjecture who may have written the letter, and so

  88. different ones have speculated. Some say is Barnaba, some say

  89. is most likely it could be Paul, because Paul wrote

  90. most of the letters, but the language is so Polish

  91. that they feel it could not have possibly been Paul,

  92. also because it's very very different the way it is written.

  93. But then I think we also need to understand who

  94. is it written to, and he was actually written to

  95. Jewish believers who were then residing in Rome and going

  96. to the Roman Church. And so have this understanding the

  97. Roman Church okay, in Rome, somewhere in Italy Okay. Back

  98. then when the church first started, you had both, of course,

  99. naturally the Jewish believers, Jewish Christians and also the gentle Christians,

  100. so you have two sites. But this letter is actually

  101. written specifically to the Jewish believers, and you're probably wondering

  102. why did this author write so specifically to one group only?

  103. And you have to understand back then, actually Christianity was

  104. considered an illegal religion. Is a religion that was not legitimate,

  105. and that's why it was actually not legal for them

  106. to operate and to meet, and that most of them

  107. were actually meeting quietly, meeting almost underground in that sense.

  108. And naturally the Roman government were persecuting the Christians the church.

  109. And you see the difference between the Jewish believers and

  110. the gentle believers. Is this. For the Jewish believers, they

  111. always had and they could still go back to Judaism,

  112. which is an accepted religion, legitimate and not illegal. And

  113. so that is why the author was actually writing very

  114. specifically to the Jewish believers telling them that guys, whatever

  115. it is, don't go back to the synagogue, because they

  116. could have actually just run back to the synagogues. That

  117. was perfectly fine for them to go back to their

  118. older ways. And yeah, it was that encouragement. And you

  119. have to read the whole Hebrews with that in light,

  120. because that will give you a different understanding of why

  121. the author, and I don't know who the author is,

  122. it is making the comparison between the old and the new,

  123. the old and the new you see peppered across all

  124. the chapters in the scriptures. Okay, so with that in mind,

  125. now let's go into the teaching. I'm gonna read the

  126. first eighteen verses of Hebrews chapter ten. I'm gonna then

  127. break it down, break it down, break it down, and

  128. then we're gonna read the next portion of verses and

  129. break it down again. And I pray that y'all will

  130. be encouraged. Okay. So it says this Hebrews chapter ten,

  131. and it reads crime sacrifice once for all reading from

  132. the New Living Translation, he says this The old system

  133. under the Law of Moses was only a shadow, a

  134. deem preview of the good things to come, not the

  135. good things themselves. The sacrificers under that system were repeated

  136. again and again year after year, but they were never

  137. able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.

  138. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrificers would

  139. have stopped, for the worshippers would have been purified once

  140. for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared.

  141. But instead, those sacrificers actually reminded them of their sins

  142. year after year. For it is not possible for the

  143. blood of bulls and gods to take away sins. That

  144. is why when Christ came into the world. He said

  145. to God, you did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings,

  146. but you have given me a body to offer. You

  147. were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin.

  148. Then I said, look, I have come to do your will,

  149. O God, as it is written to me in the

  150. scriptures about me in the scriptures. First Christ said, you

  151. did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings, or burned

  152. offerings or other offerings for sin, nor will you pleased

  153. with them, though they were required by the law of Moses.

  154. Then he said, look, I have come to do your will.

  155. He cancels the first covenant in order to put the

  156. second into effect. For God's will was for us to

  157. be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of

  158. Jesus Christ once for all time. Under the old covenant,

  159. the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day,

  160. offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never

  161. take away, since but our high priests offered himself to

  162. God as a single sacrifice for sins good for all time.

  163. Then he sat down in the place of honor at

  164. the God's right hand. Then he waits until his enemies

  165. are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. For

  166. by that one offering he forever made perfect those who

  167. are being made holy. This is deep, okay, but I'll

  168. try to explain it as we go. And the Holy

  169. Spirit also testifies that this is so, for he says,

  170. this is a new covenant I will make with my people.

  171. On that day, says the Lord, I will put my

  172. laws in their hearts, and I will write them on

  173. their minds. Then he said, I will never again remember

  174. their sins and lawless deeds. And when sins have been forgiven,

  175. there is no need to offer any more sacrifices. The

  176. Lord blessed reading of his word. Okay, so here is

  177. why the author of the letter is trying his best

  178. to explain to Jewish believers why they must not go

  179. back to their always. He's doing his best because in

  180. chapter ten the message is actually about the Tabernacle. If

  181. you're readly carefully, you realize it's actually making reference to

  182. the tabernacle. If for those of you who are wondering,

  183. what's the tabernacle, well, it's that little thing that was

  184. moving together with the people, the presence of God that

  185. was moving together the people in the wilderness, and God

  186. was saying to the people back then, you cannot come

  187. near to me unless you bring blood, unless you bring

  188. a sacrifice of an innocent life to cover up your sins.

  189. So that was what was taking place. Of course, today

  190. in the New Testament, if you think about it, we

  191. are not done with blood offering. It is still relevant,

  192. but somehow it has been transformed, because you don't see

  193. anyone bringing goods and bulls here and slaughtering them, thank God,

  194. because if not, then my role is a bit different,

  195. back to the old role of sacrificing animals. So it's

  196. been transformed. It has been abolish, not abolish, but it

  197. has been fulfilled by the blood of Jesus and not

  198. some animals blood. So that's why Jesus says I did

  199. not come to abolish the law. He says, I have

  200. come to fulfill the law. So the blood is there

  201. in both the Old and the New Testament. And Hebrews

  202. ten can essentially be divided into two halves. This first

  203. half is actually the study of the principle, the ununderstanding

  204. of what it means as the perfect ultimate sacrifice, and

  205. then the second part of the study is actually with

  206. regards to practice. So again I've always reminded people, when

  207. you read the scriptures, you will see both this. You

  208. will see principles God's principles, and then there is an

  209. output and there is a practice you would read of beliefs.

  210. But then after beliefs comes the behavior, how do you

  211. behave yourself? Okay, so there are two parts. When when

  212. you read the scripture, you have to see in line

  213. of two parts. And so we're going to see this

  214. Jesus' single sacrifice as the underlying principle that we as

  215. believers can have certainty and assurance when we practice this principle.

  216. Very very very important for us to see that because

  217. the scripture actually says this, it reminds that reminds us

  218. all that the sacrifices of the Old Testament. What does

  219. the sacrifices of the Old Testament? What do you used

  220. to do? What he used to do? Is it actually

  221. causes people to remember their sins? I'm not making this up.

  222. This is from the scripture. You readly, slowly, you will

  223. see that he says that whenever you bring that sacrifices,

  224. it reminds you of your sines. So basically every time

  225. they offered sacrifices, it reminded them that they still had sin.

  226. And that is why it was to be done over

  227. and over and over again, because they kept sinning. And

  228. so even when the high priest goes in, he has

  229. to go in sometimes once a year, he gets to

  230. go into the Holy of Holies, and he has to

  231. offer a sacrifice for his sin first before he goes in.

  232. And then he has to offer the sacrifices for the

  233. sins of the people as well. And then you compare

  234. this to the New Testament again, when we are asked

  235. to partake off the Holy communion today, which is one

  236. of the ordinances of the church, sometimes we wonder why

  237. we take holy communion just for funds it No, no,

  238. that's actually an order, a commandment that Jesus left with

  239. the church. That's why there were two ordinances in the

  240. scriptures that we were asked to do as a church,

  241. as Christians in church. One is, of course, the ordinance

  242. of holy communion. The other one is what baptism. Very

  243. very important for us to remember this and so holy

  244. communion when you are particking of it, do you think

  245. there is a sacrifice that, of course there is because

  246. the body of Christ that was broken for us. But

  247. you are not reminded of your sins. You are actually

  248. essentially reminded of your salvation. There's a big difference when

  249. you read it and when you read it and you

  250. realize that this is why we have to be obedient

  251. to partake off the Holy communion. It doesn't make us

  252. feel guilty. It's supposed to make us remember God, thank

  253. you for saving me. And so the question comes, which

  254. is it that God wants to see one sacrifice or

  255. they see one obedience, Because in the Old Testament God

  256. actually wanted both, even though in First Semmel fifteen twenty

  257. two we read of the very famous verse that we

  258. like to use. Obedience can be seen as sorry. Obedience

  259. can be better than sacrifice, okay, but better when it's

  260. compared to mere ritualistic sacrifice. There is the difference if

  261. you sacrifice in a way that is routine and there's

  262. no meaning behind it. Of course God's demanding obedience, but

  263. if you look at it carefully, you realize that both

  264. obedience and sacrifice are equally important. And so the main

  265. problem was that God could never at that time get

  266. a blood sacrifice that represented an obedient life, because all

  267. the animals, no matter how unblemish they are, they were

  268. still they were still blemish on them. And what took

  269. place in the Old Testament had to happen over and

  270. over and over again, no matter how pure that animal is,

  271. no firstborn, whatever, no blemish, nothing wrong. But still you

  272. realize they had to go through it the ritual year

  273. after year after year. But when Jesus arrived for the

  274. first time, blood was shed not only of some animal

  275. falls to the altar, but the person who lived a

  276. perfectly obedient life before he offered it. And that is why,

  277. for the first time, sacrifice and obedience blended together. That

  278. is the power of the sacrifice of Jesus in our lives.

  279. And the best part of it is this, the blood

  280. of Jesus doesn't just cover a multitude of sin, because

  281. that was what the blood of all the lambs and

  282. bulls and slotted rams were essentially doing. It was covering

  283. the sins of the people. You see in John chapter one,

  284. verse twenty nine, it says this blessed is the lamb

  285. of God who takes away the sins of the world,

  286. not merely just cover, but removes the sins of the world.

  287. And that is why it is so amazing. You see,

  288. God is both justice and mercy. We must always understand that.

  289. And it's very hard actually to be both just and merciful.

  290. You think about it. No just means what means you

  291. are someone who you will reward someone for doing what

  292. is right, and you will punish someone for doing what

  293. is wrong. And of course mercy is as you know it.

  294. Someone who is everything is all okay, you can do it,

  295. look away, be very merciful. And so it's very hard

  296. to be both just and merciful except under one circumstance,

  297. and that is where an innocent person is prepared to

  298. suffer justice on behalf of the guilty who did that

  299. It is Jesus, because only then can sin be punished

  300. and pardon at the same time. And that's why the

  301. cross is necessary, because sin was both punished and forgiven

  302. pardon at the same time. At the cross, we actually

  303. see God's perfect justice. Basically, the death penalty for sin

  304. was carried out. It's just not carried out on earth.

  305. He was carried out on Christ. But we also see

  306. God's perfect mercy that the guilty, which is earth now

  307. can go free. So you see both justice and mercy

  308. happening because the innocent paid the price. And so if

  309. God actually forgave us without the cross, then he would

  310. be merciful, but not just, do you see that? And

  311. if God refused to forgive sin and punish us all,

  312. then he would be just because all of us deserve punishment.

  313. He will not be merciful. And so God says, if

  314. you give me your eldest son, which is what Abraham

  315. did with Isaac, it will still not be enough. I

  316. will still not be satisfied. I will only be satisfied

  317. when I give my only bigotten son. And now why

  318. should the sacrifice? Some people ask, all right, why Jesus

  319. so special? Why the sacrifice of the life of Jesus

  320. more acceptable than all the poor killed cows and rams

  321. and bulls and little ones that have gone before him. Well,

  322. it is because it was the first sacrifice that had

  323. lived the way of Micah, chapter six, verse eight. In

  324. Micah chapter six, verse eight, we are actually prescribe how

  325. we are supposed to live, which is to do justly,

  326. love mercy, and walk humbly with God. And Jesus is

  327. the only person on this earth who has ever done justly,

  328. love mercy, and walk humbly with God. And so Jesus

  329. offered God the Father what was one, and God the

  330. Father accepted that sacrifice and can forgive sin. And this

  331. is how it was all resolved. That is the foundation

  332. of our gospel. And this is what is meant by

  333. in verse fourteen. For by that one offering, he forever

  334. made perfect those who are being made holy. You really say,

  335. it's like, huh, what's it saying? What does it mean

  336. by that one offering he forever made perfect those who

  337. are being made holy? We are now called to take

  338. possession of this knowledge, this knowledge that we know that

  339. Jesus is the ones and for all sacrifices. This is

  340. because we are still being made holy. How many of

  341. you all realize that sometimes we always think that, hey,

  342. I get my life to Jesus. Really, shouldn't I be holy?

  343. Shouldn't I stop all the things that I've been doing? Why?

  344. Why is it because we are being made holy? But

  345. what we have right now in hand is the knowledge

  346. that Jesus has done it once and for all. And

  347. so the principle is clear that Jesus sacrifice once and

  348. for all is there to make us perfect. We just

  349. need to now practice it. We need to keep going.

  350. And so Christ is to become my substitute, not only

  351. in his death. Sometimes we think, oh, only he just

  352. substituted us at the cross. Know he is also to

  353. become our substitute in life. What does that mean is this?

  354. He is not only to die in my place, he

  355. is also to live in my place, allowing Christ to

  356. live in my life instead of just me living my

  357. own life. That is how we need to appropriate not

  358. just this knowledge, but to live it out. And we

  359. can't do it by ourselves. We can only do it

  360. with Jesus in our lives. And this is why this

  361. hypership is needed in church to make sure that we

  362. keep practicing God's principles until we become perfect in God's eyes,

  363. because that is essentially what is happening. You know, when

  364. we finally breathe our last and we still remain in

  365. the faith, God has accomplished the work of perfecting us

  366. because we are all not perfect, yet we are all

  367. being made holy, being made perfect. Does that make sense?

  368. That is why the next portion of the scripture starts

  369. off like this and is entitled in the nalt a

  370. call to persevere. Wow. So there's a part for us

  371. to place onless we read it or lovely principled, great principle,

  372. Thank you Jesus, hallelujah. But let's read what is now saying, okay,

  373. Verse nineteen. So far, so good, all clear? Okay, And

  374. so dear brothers and sisters are This is where the

  375. author starts to talk a little bit more. Intimately, dear

  376. brothers and sisters, actually intimates that he's now talking to believers.

  377. In other translations, it says, dear brethren, So basically, those

  378. who have hung on to this principle, now I'm talking

  379. to you. Okay, dear brothers and sisters, We can boldly

  380. enter Heaven's most holy place because of the blurred of Jesus, hallelujah.

  381. Praise God. By his death, Jesus opened a new and

  382. life giving way through the curtain into the most holy place.

  383. And since we have a great high priest who rules

  384. over God's house, let us go right into the presence

  385. of God with sincere hearts, fully trusting him. For our

  386. guilty conscience have been sprinkled with crisis blurred to make

  387. us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

  388. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm,

  389. for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let

  390. us think of ways to motivate one another to acts

  391. of love and good works. And let us not neglect

  392. our meeting together as some people do, but encourage one another,

  393. especially now that the day of his return is drawing

  394. near Verse twenty six. Dear friends, if we deliberately continue

  395. sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there

  396. is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.

  397. There is only the terrible expectation of God's judgment and

  398. the raging fire that will consume his enemies. For anyone

  399. who refused to obey the law of Moses was put

  400. to death without mercy on the testimony of two or

  401. three witnesses. Just think how much worse the punishment will

  402. be for those who have trampled on the son of

  403. God and have treated the blood of the Covenant which

  404. made us holy, as if it were common and unholy,

  405. and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings

  406. God's mercy to us. For we know the one who said,

  407. I will take revenge, I will pay them back. He

  408. also said the Lord will judge his own people. It

  409. is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of

  410. the living God's stronger these words. Think back on those

  411. early days when you first le learn about Christ. Remember

  412. how you remain faithful even though it meant terrible suffering.

  413. Sometimes you were exposed to public ridicule and were beaten,

  414. And sometimes you help others who were suffering the same things.

  415. You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail.

  416. And when all you own was taken from you, you

  417. accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things

  418. awaiting you that will last forever. So do not throw

  419. away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great

  420. reward it brings you. Patience and endurance is what you

  421. need now so that you will continue to do God's will.

  422. Then you will receive all that He has promised for

  423. in just a little while. The coming one will come

  424. and not delay. And my righteous ones will live by faith.

  425. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.

  426. But we are not like those who turn away from

  427. God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones

  428. whose souls will be safe. Amen. The Lord bless the

  429. reading of his word. If you read it slowly and carefully,

  430. you realize he's giving all these strong things, and then

  431. he says at the end verseted in them. But actually

  432. we are not like that one. Right, We're not like

  433. that one. We are not the type that will turn

  434. away from God into our own destruction. We are the

  435. faithful ones whose souls we will be saved. But that

  436. does not undermine everything that he just said before that

  437. this is just a very hopeful writer. Okay, So verse nineteen,

  438. dear brothers and sisters, Like I said, he's not talking

  439. to believers. And then you actually see three things on

  440. how we are to behave okay, because what you find

  441. here is you find an encouragement. You also find a

  442. severe warning, and you also see a very practical appeal.

  443. There are three things that we can actually see here

  444. from the scripture. Firstly is trying to encourage people to

  445. do something, and then comes the warning of what happens

  446. if they don't do it. And then comes this appeal

  447. for them to stroke only do it because of the

  448. reward that comes to those who will do it. Three

  449. sections that you can see. So what is saying here

  450. is this Christ has done once for all all that

  451. needs to be done. But if we are going to

  452. enjoy the results of what Jesus has done, there is

  453. a continuous thing that we need to do. Okay. It

  454. is so often that we usually say, it is Jesus,

  455. you do something continuously for me because I once trusted you.

  456. That's how we usually think and how we usually operate.

  457. Once upon a time, I give my life to Jesus. Really,

  458. back then in high school in a nice camp, I responded,

  459. and hallelujah. Ever since that day, Jesus, you got to

  460. continuously work for me, continuously forgive me. But in reality,

  461. it is Jesus who has done everything once and for all.

  462. It is we whom must have a continuous attitude towards him.

  463. It's different, and so that's why in John three sixteen,

  464. I've shared this before. For God so loved the world

  465. that whosoever who believes not believe one time, but who

  466. believes and carries on believing, then you will experience eternal life.

  467. There is a continuous you see, the continuous tense is

  468. not seen in the English translation, but even in Matthew

  469. chapter seven way it says ask sick, and not do

  470. you think it's ask one time? Because in reality, that's

  471. how we operate, and that's how we function. We ask

  472. you you, Jesus, I asked you. Do you never respond? Okay?

  473. Bye bye. Now I'm out of here. Seek no science,

  474. we sink. I was looking for you and I couldn't

  475. find you. Bye bye, science. I not one time and

  476. no answer, Bye bye. But that's not how the scripture

  477. is word that. The scripture says asks and care on asking.

  478. That's why it says, pray unceasingly, don't stop praying, seek,

  479. keep on looking for the answer, and carry on seeking.

  480. Don't just knock once, keep knocking until the door is open.

  481. Sometimes there is no persistence in our behavior, in how

  482. we live our Christian life, and so here is that encouragement.

  483. That's why it keeps on going. Let us let us

  484. do this, let us do that. Let us what is

  485. it asking us to do? Continuously? It says, let us

  486. practice faith, hope and love. I'll break it down. That's

  487. what it is essentially saying, because it says at the start,

  488. let us draw near to God with full assurance of faith.

  489. That is what we need to do. We draw near.

  490. We're going to keep on drawing near to God with

  491. full assurance of faith our belief. And you see, our

  492. faith is based on the past, because our faith is

  493. built on the fact that Jesus Christ died for us

  494. once and for all, and we place our faith on

  495. the works that he has done. Everything in our belief

  496. system is because of what Jesus has already done for us,

  497. and there should be no room for doubt, because Jesus

  498. has already taken away all the sins in this world.

  499. And so true faith, Jesus is making you whole because

  500. he has already made you complete by his grace. Yes,

  501. there is an ongoing work. He's making us whole, but

  502. he has already completed the work. And this is the

  503. tension in the Christian life because sometimes we think, am

  504. I sinless the moment I believe? Well? The work that

  505. he has done is more than enough to render us sickness.

  506. That means if we will to die, believe in him

  507. and die, we will be with him in paradise. Hallelujah,

  508. Praise God. But the reality is we got to keep

  509. on living right, and so we got to carry on believing.

  510. And you see, we know we have everything in Christ,

  511. but we are still trying to take possession in it.

  512. We need to take possession of what we know. That means,

  513. if you know that Jesus is once and for all,

  514. take it, possess it. Because when you are possessing that

  515. knowledge and that faith, what happens is it says no,

  516. because of our faith in Christ Jesus, what is given

  517. to us is his righteousness. In Bahasa, the word is

  518. deeper hittng khan. What is given to that person is

  519. accounted for us. That means when we believe in Jesus,

  520. that is on our account, God's righteousness covers us and

  521. that makes us right. So once upon a time we

  522. were wrong, but because of our faith, now God looks

  523. at us and says that he is all right because

  524. my righteousness is now upon that person. And so that's

  525. why he goes on to say he actually starts by

  526. being no. We get what a baptize. That's how we

  527. grow our faith, that's how we begin our faith. That

  528. is the inception of our faith. It's not just merely

  529. repenting and believing, which is very very important, the two

  530. fundamentals of our faith. But it's also what a baptism

  531. because that is a declaration and the proclamation of your faith,

  532. and that is why we continue to teach believers to

  533. do that, because that is what helps them be assured

  534. of their faith. And so everything has been done by Christ,

  535. we now have the privilege of access. It is true

  536. faith in the past words of all that Jesus has

  537. done for us, that we can now step into life

  538. and allow God to lead us forward as we continue

  539. to trust and believe in him. Faith is the first

  540. thing that we need to practice. The second thing is

  541. actually hope, because it says, let us now hold fast

  542. to our hope of God's promises. And you see, that's

  543. the difference. Faith is based on the past. Hope is

  544. based on the future. The hope in which we are

  545. called to hang on to is the fact that one

  546. day Jesus will return. Our hope is anchored heavenwards, anchored upwards,

  547. it's anchored forward. And that's why it's one of the

  548. most difficult things to do to to practice because when

  549. we say I hope it happens, usually it means we

  550. are wishing it will happen, because again, there is no

  551. certainty in our hope statements. I hope you arrange today,

  552. I really do hope you arranged, because it means so hot.

  553. But sometimes we say, like a trusting Malasian, whether it

  554. probably not that it's almost it almost becomes a wishful

  555. thing because again, in the future it's something that we

  556. find it hard to see. That's why faith, hope and love.

  557. Hope is actually the weakest of them all. Faith we

  558. can hang on too, because it's based on past facts

  559. that have taken place, and that's how we build our faith.

  560. Hope is a hit. It's not always easy to hold

  561. on to because it's based on something that will happen.

  562. But that is why we could to still practic this

  563. practice hope. And then finally it says this, let us

  564. motivate one another to love, faith, hope and love. You

  565. get both past, future and present love. We've got to

  566. literally the word motivate is actually another word that can

  567. be used is provoked. Let's provoke each other to love.

  568. Let's irritate is another word that can be described. Let's

  569. irritate each other to love. Another word is one that

  570. we use of our mother sometimes. Let's nag each other

  571. to love. Do you know I'm forty four this year.

  572. My mother still nagts me, and I've come to this

  573. place where I'm grateful. I'm grateful because I know she

  574. means the best. She keeps reminding me of things science.

  575. I wonder why I get annoyed and with all the

  576. kids as we're like, why I keep saying the same

  577. thing over and over? But really I know she is

  578. wanting me to love people a little bit more, remind

  579. us to do things, to be more careful to Yeah,

  580. whatever it is, I've learned what it means to constantly

  581. nag each other to love. You See, love cannot develop

  582. private new That will mean that you're only loving yourself.

  583. That's the reality of it. So if you stir others

  584. up to love, others will stir you up as well.

  585. In other words, your concerns should be the well being

  586. of the fellowship. That's why it's so important for us

  587. to meet as a church. That's why until today, two

  588. thousand years later, we still hang on to coming to

  589. church and meeting regularly. That's why it says, don't neglect

  590. meeting at church, don't forsake the assembling together, because if

  591. you're going to help each other be holy, you have

  592. got to be here. You have got to be together.

  593. There's no way in which you are being made holy

  594. in isolation doesn't exist, and so we will keep rubbing

  595. off one another in the right way in the wrong way.

  596. But whatever it is, again, practice faith, hope, and love,

  597. because in that trinity is also past, present, and future,

  598. your entire life continuous. That is what the encouragement is about.

  599. Because Jesus has done everything he needs to do. We

  600. must therefore now be confident when we draw near with faith,

  601. when we hold fast to hope, and when we stir

  602. one another to love. Amen. Now it comes to the

  603. second emphasis. I know it's going I'm taking it deeper

  604. and deeper, but I hope you see it because there

  605. is a nice continuation to this. The second emphasis from

  606. the scripture is now with regards to perseverance. Okay, the

  607. first one is the encouragement now is perseverance, and it

  608. comes in the form of a warning in verses twenty

  609. six to thirty one. And these are very strong words.

  610. A lot of people when they read this portion of scripture,

  611. they don't like it. And I want you to know

  612. the author is writing to believers. This is one of

  613. the scriptures that tell me that we as believers can

  614. fall and therefore fall out of the faith. I'm not

  615. someone who subscribes to one safe, always safe. Because I

  616. believe in the free will of human beings. I do.

  617. And again, this is the scripture that says, no, be

  618. careful how you're living your life, because it says this,

  619. if you treat the sacrifice of Christ the same way

  620. as if it was the sacrifice in the Old Testament,

  621. you're in danger because a lot of times we behave

  622. in a way where we just want things covered up

  623. but not remove. Isn't that human nature just covering ab

  624. Let's just ship under the cup bad first? Okay, we're

  625. worried about it later. And the truth is, when Jesus

  626. was sacrificed on the cross, it was not just to

  627. cover up our sins temporarily. It was to remove our

  628. sins permanently to those who sincerely repent. Do you believe that? Amen?

  629. And so in other words, if you go on willfully

  630. sinning after you found out about the sacrifice Jesus offered

  631. for you, you are actually insulting the Son of God. That's

  632. why it says you are trembling on him. You are

  633. disrespecting the heavenly Father, and you are offending the Holy Spirit.

  634. You are disdaining the word that is used in the

  635. scripture that I just read strong. It's very strong verbs,

  636. not actually basically ultimately what is saying. It is saying

  637. that you are putting yourself beyond reach because this one

  638. sacrifice is the only one there is ready for some

  639. of us who think that maybe there'll be another Jesus

  640. that will come along the way and take away my

  641. sins again that I accumulated after I believe in him.

  642. No more. Jesus is once and for all. And so

  643. if we treat the sacrifice of Jesus like as though

  644. it was one of those slatted cows and rams and

  645. bulls having to go year after year after year, we

  646. put ourselves in danger. And that is why the warning

  647. here states that it is a fearful thing to fall

  648. into the hands of the living God. And so with

  649. this turn warning, we are reminded of the need for perseverance.

  650. That's why we need to persevere in our faith, run

  651. this race, keep on running, to allow the sacrifice that

  652. Jesus Christ made once and for all to work and

  653. do its job in our lives. Very very very important. Amen.

  654. I don't mean to scare people, but really I don't

  655. see any other way of preaching and teaching God's work,

  656. because sometimes if I just tell you all the nice things,

  657. well okay, or everything it's nice, then I'm a false

  658. profit really, because a false prophet is not someone who

  659. comes and tells you all the nice things that you want.

  660. You know. The false prophets usually come and tell you

  661. all the nice things that you want to hear, which

  662. is not wrong, but if he leaves out the not

  663. so nice things, that means we're only sharing half of

  664. the truth. And that's why the warning for false prophets

  665. is always be careful because you can't distinguish them. They

  666. look like they are saying the right things because it's

  667. the things that we want to hear, but I can't

  668. because I don't want to do that. The reality is,

  669. if I teach about Heaven, I got to teach about Hell.

  670. It is part of our understanding of the scriptures. Yes.

  671. Can it be done lovingly, yes, But I really don't

  672. know how to preach about hell quite lovingly because it's

  673. one of those hard things. But please bear that in

  674. mind when you hear a teaching, don't take it a man.

  675. This guy is all harding of doom, painting all the

  676. worst case you know, you know, it's not just that. Ultimately,

  677. it's asking us to persevere persever It goes on to say,

  678. let's endure, because the last plea is on endurance. You see,

  679. perseverance is the ability to continue striving towards a goal

  680. despite all the challenges that you're facing. And then finally,

  681. endurance is the capacity to withstand hardship all the way

  682. to the very end. We need both perseverance and endurance.

  683. And now the writer reminded the people of how they

  684. used to have such a tough time, because again he's

  685. talking to the Jewish believers, and the Jewish believers never

  686. got it easy, right from the very start. If you

  687. think that the Jewish believers, the first who came to Christ,

  688. all all of them, their lives fine and dandy, no rejoicing.

  689. They give their life in the nice comforts of a

  690. conference in the aircone room, and ever since then their

  691. life became smooth ceiling. No, it did not happen like that.

  692. In fact, eleven twelve of all the apostles died martyrs.

  693. They died for their faith, They suffered for their faith.

  694. They had such tough times. No, many of them were

  695. thrown into prison that's where that verse that was for

  696. me was essentially talking about you all went to prison,

  697. you all ended up losing your possessions, your property. But

  698. you can stand the loss of everything if you have

  699. something better that can be touched. Because ultimately, as believers,

  700. what we have is towed up in heaven, treasures that

  701. are stored up in heaven, where mouths and rust cannot destroy,

  702. where thieves cannot break in and try to steal it

  703. away from us. That is the faith in which we

  704. hang on too. And so the words here are you

  705. have already known persecution, you lost your property, gladly, don't

  706. give up now, please. This is the appeal that the

  707. author is making. There's a reward awaiting you if you

  708. just persevere a little longer. That's what is asking us

  709. to do. In fact, it starts to talk in nautical

  710. sense like a sailor, because he says, don't don't give

  711. up on your voyage. We are all on this journey,

  712. and he's saying that the rescuer is coming. Just keep

  713. on sailing, don't drift away. Complete this voyage and you're

  714. right to the very end. Amen. And so how do

  715. we embark on this journey I'm almost done. The bank

  716. can come up. How do we embark on this journey?

  717. And the scripture in John chapter fourteen, verses one to

  718. seven says Jesus, Okay, when he was talking, he reminded them, guys,

  719. don't let your hearts be troubled, because I'm going to

  720. go off somewhere. I'm going to go and prepare a

  721. place for all of your And then of course he says,

  722. you already know where you'll be going, and Thomas was like, uh,

  723. I have no idea where you're going. Thomas again sometimes

  724. says the dunnest things, but he is really literally honest

  725. because he wasn't sure. And then it took Jesus to

  726. assure him and say, I am the Way, I am

  727. the Truth, and I am the Life. And no one

  728. comes to the Father except true me. If you had

  729. really known me, you will know who my father is.

  730. And from now on you do know him because you

  731. know me and you have seen me. Therefore you have

  732. seen him. That's why the earliest believers were called followers

  733. of the way. You see, many times when we think

  734. of our salvation and our faith, we think salvation is

  735. a destination that means I have arrived. I'm safe, but

  736. it's not there. Salvation is a journey. We have not

  737. arrived unless you are that teeth hanging next to Jesus. Okay,

  738. it's one of the clearest signs of those whose time

  739. was up. And that's why some people will tell me, actually,

  740. don't need to get what a baptize not very important

  741. in life. Because the thief who was hanging on the

  742. cross of Calvary, Jesus assured him that today you will

  743. be with me in Paradise. I don't think he came

  744. down across Jesus baptized him. Yeah, but his arrival and

  745. his destination was simultaneous. He didn't have a journey to travel.

  746. But for most of us, the minute we say yes

  747. to Jesus, we are essentially setting off on our journey,

  748. not arriving at our journey. And so that means we

  749. have a whole life of hate to live, and Jesus

  750. is sometimes saying, hey, if you have the whole life

  751. or hate to live, why are you not doing the

  752. things that I told you to do. That's why baptism

  753. becomes something that's very important, not just water baptism, spirit

  754. baptism as well, because we need to receive the Holy

  755. Spirit in our lives to walk in this world. The

  756. Spirit of God is both acting as purification and also power.

  757. We need the Holy Spirit to purify us, to sanctify

  758. us as we walk through this dirty world. That is

  759. the reality of it. But a lot of times we say, no,

  760. we don't really need the Holy Spirit. No, we need

  761. the Holy Spirit just as important as obedience in baptism.

  762. In Whatter baptisms and Scripture says it quite clearly. It

  763. is also very important for us to realize that if

  764. we are now taking off on this journey, let us

  765. be equipped. And that's why the power of the Holy

  766. Spirit is also there to help us navigate life. Amen.

  767. So I want to encourage us when we read the scriptures,

  768. understand that God had this amazing plan, his perfect plan

  769. for us. No one else could have thought of it

  770. this way, and yet because of his great love for

  771. his people, someone had to take the fall. Jesus was

  772. the fall guy actually, if you think about it, and

  773. that's why our hearts cry out to him in gratitude.

  774. Not in this day and a long simes we question God, God,

  775. why do you allow this to happen in my life?

  776. Why do these peoples who annoying when Jesus had all

  777. those questions as well, because he had to die for

  778. annoying people as well. That's the truth. It's the truth.

  779. And sometimes when we meet and encounter difficult situations, and

  780. usually it's got to do with people, we are like, oh, man,

  781. life is terrible. Why can you imagine being Jesus on

  782. the cross and people are spitting at him? And yet

  783. did he die for those soldiers who spent an ebs?

  784. He died for every single one who contributed to his persecution. Yes.

  785. Do you think he didn't take it up with his father.

  786. He did. He's like God seriously, and God said, yes, seriously,

  787. you have to go through it. And I think the

  788. biggest sacrifice for Jesus really was when even the father

  789. looked away from the son, because there was a moment

  790. when it was all why because the sins of the

  791. world was upon this man, and even God in Cantonese

  792. is more untie, I can't see. I can't imagine what

  793. that felt like for Jesus, having his own father momentarily

  794. turned away. Because again, this is the trinity. They have

  795. been together since not even time immemorial. I can't even

  796. say that because time is in them, not in time.

  797. So Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray, Lord God,

  798. this morning, this afternoon, Lord, that our understanding of your

  799. holy scriptures, Lord will not just merely remain hate knowledge.

  800. But Lord, I pray Lord God, that this is our life,

  801. this is our faith, this is our hope, this is

  802. our live, This is what we are called to persevere

  803. all through the days of our lives and during it

  804. to the very end, because this is the exact things

  805. in which Lord, you want us to pass on to

  806. our children as well. Lord, help us to live in

  807. accordance to your plan and your purpose, because Lord, by

  808. ourselves we are not able to do this. Lord, don't

  809. just be our substitute in your death. And we thank

  810. you for that. Lord, thank you, thank you Lord, that

  811. you took our place on the cross. But right now, Lord,
