  1. You're listening to a message to go from acts church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. Has the Gospel or the Good News been you know,

  4. spread all over has the great commission which is to

  5. make disciples of all nations all around the world.

  6. Has it been reached it?

  7. No?

  8. Yes or no answer? Very simple no? Right?

  9. But why this guy? Simple statement, simple fact. It reached

  10. all around the world, and not just reach You know

  11. it's accessible. You want it, you go down to family, mind,

  12. you go down to seven eleven, can get it within

  13. arm's reach. Amazing, Right, So the question is is it's

  14. cooked better than Jesus?

  15. I don't know. But how come it's not fulfilled?

  16. Now you must understand, even during that time, just to

  17. give you a bit of background, there wasn't any tepelogy, right,

  18. There were no printing press. There weren't big building billboards.

  19. I'm talking about nineteen twenty three era or even Jesus' time.

  20. You think about it even worse, right, when you need

  21. to communicate, it takes a while. But the disciples, at

  22. least in the first couple hundred years after Jesus, they

  23. had nothing except the Holy Spirit. Of course, Jesus was

  24. with them as well at the early days. But they

  25. managed to make a lot of disciples spread the good

  26. news as almost as power or you know, as good

  27. as what this mission or vision statement is. But something

  28. stopped along the way, right, So one of the things

  29. that I feel is the problem. It's not so much

  30. of the vision. Maybe there is. Sometimes we say we

  31. do not for few the division at the company vision

  32. all that is because we may not fully understand vision statement.

  33. So maybe understanding is the problem. Now the question is

  34. do we understand the vision statement of what was written

  35. in the Great Commissioners Mettron eight?

  36. Are we not clear? Is the question here?

  37. Okay, so the topic today, Like I said, it's not

  38. to bash people, not to make you feel bad, but

  39. just trying to illustrate. In fact, I'm a very factual person,

  40. engineer by nature, so I do think like this, why

  41. this way if you do not have a if you

  42. don't have a problem, you try to find out why

  43. the solution couldn't be met, because you know, engineers tend

  44. to be problem solvers like that, right, So really it's

  45. coming back to the original command, the call to make

  46. disciples of all nations, and again just to be very

  47. clear is not to share the gospel, Okay, Sharing gospel

  48. is one aspect, not also to be the follower, I

  49. mean the you know, the believers of Christ. But to

  50. be disciples and then make disciples. That is the command.

  51. That is the call. Okay, Just to be very clear

  52. because sometimes they think, oh, you know, as long as

  53. you share the gospel, you know you've done your part,

  54. you're making disciples. No, you can be sharing, But a

  55. believer can be may not necessarily be a disciple, disciple

  56. or continue to disciple. Right. I think we've established that previously.

  57. A believer can may not also necessarily be a laborer

  58. of God.

  59. Right.

  60. For Christ, a disciple surely is a laborer. So far

  61. so what is the disciple? Just to recap, Like I said,

  62. we put a pause on this for quite some time.

  63. What is a disciple or a discipler? What's what's the characteristics?

  64. Do you remember.

  65. What is little christ? What is Christians? Correct teachings?

  66. Right?

  67. You see somebody, you know, the person is a little Christian.

  68. In fact, the early days you used to call him

  69. lit Christians because it's a mockery.

  70. Right.

  71. The Christ's likeness is what we're looking for. And if

  72. you have your christ like or christ Like minded, you

  73. will be a discipler for sure, because that's part of

  74. the command. Right, So turn to your neighbor and ask

  75. your neighbor, are you a discipler of Jesus?

  76. Okay? Do you answer? Don't worry.

  77. Like I said, it's not to mock, it's just to

  78. or not. It's just trying to help you understand this

  79. because you if you really call yourself a discipler of Christ,

  80. you would be discipling others.

  81. Okay.

  82. Now, as I mentioned, this was prepared some time back,

  83. so I put up a slide. Okay, it's a very

  84. fun thing because how many of you watched the movie

  85. How to Train Your Dragon?

  86. Right?

  87. Okay, so this is a funny twist on that because

  88. I believe it's also important to go where is not

  89. the easiest, but the closest ground around you? And where's

  90. the closest ground around you? Family at home?

  91. Okay?

  92. So, like I said, family Sunday material. But I think

  93. it's still relevant, okay, because where can you begin to

  94. disciple at this if let's say you are first generation,

  95. or if you are the only one, or even when

  96. I say family, not necessarily just the immediate family. You

  97. can also be I'm quite sure you got uncles, aunties

  98. to not yet yet you're not yet, but Grandpa's, Grandma's

  99. and all that you know, that is still part of family.

  100. And no matter how dysfunctional that family is, it is

  101. still a potential ground for discipling to happen. Right, And

  102. just so that you know, I'm also extending it beyond

  103. biological family, but biological family will be your closest okay,

  104. So for those of you you can also think about,

  105. you know, your workplace, church, et cetera. Those are all

  106. still family, all inclusive as well. But of course today

  107. I'm just gonna be focused more on using families an example.

  108. Why is it importance because today we prayed right and

  109. ECF pray for the families. So families is important, all right.

  110. This service alone has a lot of young families. And again,

  111. just to define families, it's not when you have kids

  112. running around, okay. Families starts whenever you come together, and

  113. as I mentioned, two people get married, and as I mentioned,

  114. it also extends beyond just so even if you're a single,

  115. young working adult, young kid as well, bro.

  116. Listen or not? Yeah my son? Sorry? Yeah?

  117. So yes, you have family all around you. Okay, and

  118. again it's not just the older speaking to the younger.

  119. The younger can speak to the older as well. Okay,

  120. you just wanted to lay that ground.

  121. Why is it important? And how do you do this?

  122. It's the main just as a message, just very tree

  123. simple points after this, Okay, just just beary me. But

  124. I always set the tone. The main thing for us

  125. is to disciple others. And how disciple others, just really

  126. just love them, show them how it can be done.

  127. That is how you can relate to them. Now, sometimes

  128. we think about barriers of how we can disciple this

  129. or maybe culturally different, I mean to say, back different backgrounds.

  130. Sometimes they say intergenerous. I cannot understand why the gen

  131. zs are doing this no cap stuff, you know, ah,

  132. not risks that he's shaking his hit. No, no, no.

  133. But but what you can do is to speak the

  134. common language. The love of God is translatable no matter

  135. what age. If you can communicate that or show them

  136. that you know that it will work out, you're discipling

  137. them already.

  138. It goes beyond that.

  139. Okay, So let's come back to uh some passages because

  140. it's important to be grounded by passage.

  141. So let's look at the Bible.

  142. Right. Deuteronomy, by the way, due to dronomy, is one

  143. of the passages that talks about discipleship aside from the

  144. usual Right, let's look at digit army six.

  145. Okay, if you can.

  146. What does he say? He dictarmy six. Let's read okay,

  147. six one to two. It's really together. Actually, let's do

  148. this for a change now before we begin. The title

  149. or the hitting in the NIV version talks about the love,

  150. sorry love the Lord your God, and in some other

  151. transitions it's called it the Great the Great Tests, not

  152. the great the greatest commandment. All right, let's read this

  153. in verse one. These are the commands decrease and the laws.

  154. The Lord your God directed me to teach you to

  155. observe in the land that you are crossing in the Jordan,

  156. to possess, so that you, you, your children and their

  157. children after them, fear the Lord your God as long

  158. as you live, by keeping all his decrees and commands

  159. that I give you, and so that you may enjoy

  160. long life. Very simple, okay, very straightforward as well. Now

  161. I've also highlighted Thanksgable for fixing my slide as well,

  162. the first slide the important bits you so you are involved, okay,

  163. what else? Your children and then your and dear children.

  164. So like I said, it's multi generational, okay, it goes

  165. beyond that one tier.

  166. Okay.

  167. And what are we called to do, okay, is to

  168. keep his decrease, the Lord's decrease and his commands that

  169. it's given to you. Now, just a few observations just

  170. looking at some.

  171. Of these verses up here.

  172. Okay, discipleship has to do with generational discipleship. Like I

  173. mentioned earlier, Okay, it has to extend beyond one. So

  174. sometimes when we say, oh, you know, I don't have

  175. enough particular age group or this age group I cannot

  176. relate to. No, it's not right because here it talks

  177. about intergenerational. We need to be focused not just on

  178. cultural interests and all that, but really all generations. What's

  179. the main thing here? The focus on here is to

  180. do with obedience, right because helping them or you know,

  181. as long as they keep to the decrease and the

  182. commands I give you. What else can we see here?

  183. One thing that I can tell you is not there.

  184. It's not about Bible knowledge. It's not about just the learnings,

  185. but it is about really obedience. So like what Elaine

  186. said earlier, just Obela, don't know why he kicked me there,

  187. I mean encourage me to do that.

  188. Just Obeyila.

  189. And that's why, really what it is our whole life

  190. as long as we continue to follow through. When be

  191. a con disciples, it's always about yeah, just obey. You know,

  192. we may not fully understand. We don't have to be

  193. a Bible scholar to do that. That's what I'm trying

  194. to say here. Another observation here is notice the Bible

  195. tells you what is the outcome at the end, and

  196. what is it? Enjoy long life? How many ons to

  197. have long life?

  198. It's a very Chinese thing right now. Not no Chinese.

  199. I think it's cross culture, a very Malaysian thing.

  200. I want to enjoy long Chinese culure, Chinese long noddles

  201. and all that kind of thing. But yeah, everything is

  202. cross culture. Everybody wants to enjoy long life. Amen, Amen, Amen, Okay,

  203. it's Chinese, just China. Manner is louder than everybody else anyway. Now,

  204. so let's carry on reading. I'll just read on so

  205. to say sometime now. In verse three, here is real,

  206. and be careful to obey. So it's to be careful

  207. to obey, so that it may go well with you,

  208. and that you may increase greatly in the land flowing

  209. with mill and honey, just as Lord, the God of

  210. your ancestors, promise you Verse four. Here o Israel, the

  211. Lord of the Lord, our God. The Lord is one.

  212. Love the Lord your God, with all of your heart,

  213. and with all of your soul, and with all of

  214. your strength.

  215. Verse six.

  216. These commments that I give you today are to be

  217. on your hearts, all pauset there for a while. So again,

  218. what is key here? It talks about loving God.

  219. That is it.

  220. And that's why it's not mentioned to you to help

  221. bridge that generational gap and all those other barriers. Just

  222. teach them to love God. That's all really, that is it.

  223. It's not about it's about discipling the heart. It's what

  224. I'm trying to say here, because when you disciple the heart,

  225. all the other things, the art, the obedience, what you do,

  226. the product is a product of the heart. Okay, But

  227. if you force it, your force obedience, then it's all legalistic,

  228. right or do this, do that. But if you go

  229. with the heart, everything will be an expression. So that's

  230. why we say you must love God with all your heart,

  231. soul and strength. Notice what it says love, just love.

  232. So the heart is like the root. The behavior will

  233. be the.

  234. Fruit if the heart is right.

  235. Okay, So imagine this when we go back again, we say,

  236. train your you know your family, train your children, train

  237. their children. What are you training them? You're training them

  238. to love God, that's it. So before you go and

  239. see you cannot relate to gen zs like I said.

  240. You can just help them love God with all their heart,

  241. all their soul, and all their strength. And they I

  242. can guarantee you they'll live a wholier life. They will

  243. live a more obedient life. Okay, because why once you

  244. love God, action will follow all right. Otherwise it's just legalism,

  245. like I said. And that's the problem here. So then

  246. how do you disciple people, children, everybody else it is too.

  247. Teach them to love that's it. Turn to your neighbor

  248. and tell them, teach them to love God with all

  249. their heart, soul and strength.

  250. Okay.

  251. And notice it begins with you. I read the message

  252. the verse one verse before it begins.

  253. With you, you.

  254. Your children. And then their children.

  255. Okay. So the use.

  256. Here is you and I. If you cannot love God,

  257. how do you then translate that love?

  258. Right? Okay? So every okay, so far, let's read the

  259. next portion. Okay. Uh, it says here where do I

  260. have here? Okay? Verse seven?

  261. Impress them on your children, Talk about them when you

  262. sit at home, and when you walk along the road,

  263. and when you lie down and when you get up.

  264. Tie them as symbols on their hands, and bind them

  265. on your foreheads, write them on the door frames of

  266. your houses and or on your gates. Okay, So what

  267. does this mean?

  268. Right?

  269. We establish this dici push. It begins with the heart

  270. already right, and then we are to help them love

  271. God more.

  272. Right.

  273. And when you say you shall impress them, some transitions

  274. will say impress simply means to teach them diligently.

  275. Okay.

  276. And what's the important thing that we're teaching them, just

  277. to recap begin, is to teach them to love God first.

  278. And like I said earlier, if you do not love God,

  279. you cannot teach them that. It's rare to translate that

  280. because you're only using your hit knowledge to to translate

  281. that love. So therefore, it's really disciples is really one

  282. life to another. When I love God, it helps me

  283. translate that love to someone. That's to disciple others to

  284. understand that love. Okay, So effectively one trying to say

  285. is that you need to work on yourself first, right now,

  286. what are we to do impress and to teach them,

  287. the children diligently to the point right it says, it's

  288. very specific. Talk to them when you sit, when you walk,

  289. when you lie down, when you get up, so pretty

  290. much all scenarios from the moment you wake up until

  291. you lay in bed. You continue to impress on your children. Now,

  292. as I said, I'm gonna just land with three points

  293. and then we'll end all right. So the principles I

  294. can summarize just by reading this versus here on how

  295. to disciple people, it's really just points here.

  296. Okay.

  297. Firstly, you need to model it, okay, when you sit,

  298. when you walk, in other words, in every way of life.

  299. The first word here or the first key point here

  300. is to model, okay. Second one is to talk about relationship. Okay,

  301. you need to have relationship with them to be able

  302. to disciple them. It's easier, don't get me wrong. You

  303. can still disciple others, but when you have relationship, when

  304. you spend enough time with them, but it's enough trust,

  305. it's easier to disciple.

  306. Okay.

  307. So that's what it says here, because to impress them,

  308. even the simple English would impress. You're impressed when you

  309. you know, when your rop shoulders right, when you know

  310. the person, So how can you impact them? You need

  311. to have relationship with them?

  312. Okay?

  313. And then the last one here is the word intentional.

  314. Okay.

  315. I will come to that in a bit, but just

  316. basic English words. I think you understand what it means

  317. to then teach or disciple.

  318. People to love God.

  319. Every work is so far one simple or heck, here

  320. is is MRI.

  321. Medical? So am I right? The heart?

  322. If you're gonna do test on anything right, just check

  323. on the heart right okay? So principal number one, are

  324. you okay ready?

  325. Okay? Model? What is model?

  326. When you want to disciple people, you've got to model it.

  327. What's the basis here? What we read in Deuteronomy, But

  328. not just that. Let's read first Corinthians here, okay, eleven

  329. versus one. It says here, imitate me just as I

  330. also imitate Christ. So the apostle Paul Here. Apostle Paul

  331. Here talks about imitation. What's imitation? Me making copying? Okay,

  332. and this principle is very simple. As you copy, they

  333. copy you.

  334. Right.

  335. Let's do exercise is I know it's a banana leave

  336. kind of a time after postal if you're processing it.

  337. So let's stand up. Everybody stand up with me. Let's

  338. do a quick excise. Stretch a little bit. Okay, okay,

  339. now listen to my instructions again. Okay, lift up your

  340. right hand okay, high okay, hold your ring finger for

  341. finger with your thumbe make a circle okay. And then

  342. when I give you instructions, everybody's away, right, give you instructions,

  343. you will then uh, you know, use hold the ring,

  344. touch your your your chin uh. And then as I come,

  345. want to tree, okay, really want to tree? See funny right,

  346. some of you touch here? Why because it's easy to

  347. copy reference even though I, you know, verbally tell you chin.

  348. Some of you did that right, so he may be seated.

  349. This is simple exercise because why it's easy for children

  350. to copy or mimic. Again, it's I know, I know,

  351. I saw I rushed it a bit by they say Chin,

  352. but you know we did this for Chin, right and

  353. sorry if you if you do not know where Chin

  354. is is here, okay, just joking, just joking. Okay, So

  355. you know children notly they sometimes don't know where it is.

  356. They don't listen as well.

  357. Right. So that's the reason why it is always important

  358. for you to model it out.

  359. If you model it out, it's easier for someone to follow.

  360. I know something you have used your left hands out

  361. forgiving with that right hand is here. I know when

  362. you're looking here is sorry about that? Okay, forgiven today.

  363. But that's that's why this simple excise is to get

  364. you to you know, to to to not for all

  365. stay on me. And the second thing is so to

  366. ensure that you understand the power of modeling.

  367. Okay.

  368. And again, when I say model, it doesn't necessarily just

  369. mean perfection. Some people feel that I can only model

  370. when I'm perfect. No, modeling just helps simplify for the

  371. person that you are trying to again come towards that

  372. living relationship with God. The more important thing about modeling

  373. is not perfection, but actually authenticity, okay, meaning to say,

  374. you've got to be authentic about this. If you love

  375. God authentically, you know, and that is an authentic relationship.

  376. It's easier for you to then model that, so authentic

  377. modeling is more important. Okay, And again, why do people

  378. or even children or people in general turn away from God?

  379. You will often hear that it's not because God has

  380. hurt them. More often than not, is people have disappointed them.

  381. So the people that look up for or people that

  382. are supposed to be modeling the love of God is

  383. not doing a good job to some extent. Okay, why

  384. because hypocrisy can kick in whether it is a church

  385. or at home. You can be saying something like I said,

  386. just now you know chin, but you're doing something else

  387. and children will pick it up very simple. So again,

  388. it doesn't mean you have to be perfect. You just

  389. need to be authentic. Okay, let me give you an example.

  390. I'm sorry Zach and my sons and all that. Half

  391. my examples always about them because again it's for family,

  392. so a lot of it will come from my family. Okay, so, oh,

  393. just was walked out?

  394. Cool?

  395. Let's talk about this. Yeah, one day over dinner. One

  396. day over dinner, my wife saw, if you know, she talks,

  397. she talks quite a fabit so she asked me a question,

  398. but I ignored her. Maybe perhaps you know I was distracted.

  399. I don't know, I can't remember exactly. Again, my attention

  400. was somewhere else. However, my kids picked it up, and

  401. then they did say, you know why you ignoring me?

  402. I think it was your zach Why I ignore you? Mommy? There,

  403. I knew I was in trouble already, right, So so,

  404. and the thing is, you know, we are always taught

  405. not to ignore people, right, especially from Asian context. You know,

  406. respect your elders, respect your spouse, respect everybody else. When

  407. they talk, you listen, right, even though you I mean,

  408. I'm a generally a quieter person in why nature, But

  409. somehow I just missed it right, And we encourage the brothers.

  410. I've got two boys, so I encourage them to you know,

  411. when they talk, you listen to them as well. Likewise,

  412. when your grandma talks, when your mom talks, your dad talks,

  413. et cetera, you always listen. So I was very tempted

  414. to explain myself and be defensive naturally, I'm like, but

  415. I chose to not do that. I said, exact, thank

  416. you for correcting me. Then he will smile because he's like, yeah,

  417. I cut you out, kids, right. You know this is

  418. where he was much younger, by the way, not not

  419. at this age. She's now fourteen. I think it's probably

  420. when he was I think six or seven, quite young

  421. and impressionable back then. So whatever you say, literally childlike faith,

  422. You're like, you say this, how can we not do that?

  423. Right?

  424. So so he corrected me, So I then have to

  425. listen eat the humble pie. Yeah, yeah, I.

  426. Get your point. Yeah.

  427. For those of you who know him from very young,

  428. he's also even though he's very younger, he's quite he's

  429. quite the you know, his mind is like much older

  430. than his age, even at that time. So I had

  431. to then, yeah, thanks for correcting me. I apologize to

  432. my wife as well. She's not here, so it's fine,

  433. but I say sorry, please forgive me, right because I

  434. shouldn't have been distracted and I ignor you. But this

  435. happens a lot, right in life. Sometimes we say something

  436. and we do something else. I tell Zach, you know it,

  437. don't boss your brother around to take stuff. But sometimes

  438. I say, he actually, can you tell me get the

  439. thing of the I do that. So it helps that

  440. when we want to do something right. We shouldn't say

  441. it because sometimes as parents or even as a disciplests,

  442. as just word discipless, we tend to give instructions because

  443. so easy to just give instructions, But the best way

  444. to teach is actually to model, do what is right,

  445. and then everything will come into place. I just yeah,

  446. we just mentioned about you, but yeah, nothing too embarrassing.

  447. Aha. Yeah.

  448. So that's why it's very important for those everyone, those

  449. that are in position, you know, like as parents, as

  450. leaders in your workplace, et cetera. You know, you sometimes

  451. need to ask yourself what do I need to stop doing?

  452. Or in the flip side, is also what do I

  453. need to start doing? When you're put in the position

  454. to role model something very important, very simple, but sometimes

  455. very hard to do, right, don't look at your phone,

  456. don't you know the kind of thing. So we need

  457. to be disciplined as well. Okay, so let's let's let's

  458. continue to do this well, ensure that we model this

  459. correctly and work. So far, very simple, right, two more

  460. points and then I'm done, all right. Second one relationship,

  461. and I didn't mention relationship at the start, as well

  462. as the second principle. Okay, now, with relationship is a

  463. very special thing. The closer you get to someone, and

  464. in terms of relationship, I'm not talking about the lovely

  465. Dorvey kind, just any relationship. It may be peer relationship,

  466. it might be friends, it might be anything. But the

  467. closer you are, the larger influence could be on that

  468. person that you're having the relationship with. Okay, and again

  469. not boygirl relationship only. I'm talking about other relationship as well.

  470. Mother and dad.

  471. If you're close, relationship is stronger son father son mother.

  472. Same thing peers to two students, et cetera. You know, uncle, nephew,

  473. you feel the blanks. Okay, the closer you are, the

  474. greater the influence. That's why relationship is very important. And

  475. this is not something that we created as humans. By

  476. the way, Jesus did it first, all right. He was

  477. the master of all relationships.

  478. Let me show you, Okay.

  479. In Mark three, verses thirteen to fourteen, it says as

  480. Jesus went up on a mountain side and called to

  481. him those he wanted. So he called and only selective

  482. those that he wanted, and they came to him. He

  483. appointed twelve, of course, with this other twelve disciples that

  484. they might be with him, so purpose calling appointing. But

  485. what happens after that is so that they can be

  486. around him, so that they can hang together. So relationship

  487. is really spending time.

  488. That's it. That's how you grow relationship. Right.

  489. You cannot be in relationship by clocking in neil or zero.

  490. It wouldn't go verified some can. I don't know how

  491. we did it. Yes, we did long distance for how

  492. many years?

  493. Eight years something that I don't know how.

  494. But it still requires some form of contact or more

  495. specific communication. Right, But relationship is all about time spent

  496. together and after that, it says there so that they

  497. or he them, they can then do their part to preach,

  498. to make more disciples, et cetera. Okay, so Jesus noticed,

  499. not sorrying Jesus recognize the importance of relationship.

  500. What is it, just.

  501. To be clear again, is to be with him or

  502. to be with the disciples. So when you want to disciples, somebody,

  503. your disciple, has to spend time with you. Okay, don't

  504. just I mean nowadays I know there's texts and all that.

  505. Don't don't get me wrong.

  506. Those are effective ways to build relationship, but it's more

  507. effective if you spend time with them, real relationship, real time,

  508. face to face, not face time. Okay, you cannot go fishing,

  509. just joking, but yeah, remotely I'm skidding. Yeah, I mean

  510. that's just what I do, right, We spend time together.

  511. We just went fishing not too long ago, yesterday. But yeah, no,

  512. that's not my point. Sorry, Okay, you cannot build relationship

  513. if you don't spend time, because it is my main

  514. point there. If you only disciple somebody, you need to

  515. spend time with them. And if you want to disciple

  516. children and their children, you need to spend time with them.

  517. So sometimes I feel right that, yes, in the whole

  518. rad race, we sometimes may tend to neglect. You provide

  519. one aspect, but you neglect another aspect, right, or I

  520. need to ensure that you are all settled, but you're

  521. not discipling them. And that's where all this absent parent

  522. and all that. Again, don't get me wrong, if I'm

  523. not knocking, it's all important as well, but you need

  524. to balance because if you don't spend time there, you're

  525. not discipling them all right, And the Bible gives a

  526. warning first Correnthine fifteen Territree I don't think I put

  527. it up. Sorry, let's just just read it if you can.

  528. First Corinthians fifteen to territory. By the way, just bring

  529. a Bible, you know. Sometimes I do have other things

  530. that I forget to put in. It says here, do

  531. not be deceived. Bad company corrupts what good habits? Some

  532. versions say good characters, some will say good morals. So

  533. essentially what they're trying to say that is that the

  534. starting point is good, but if the company is bad,

  535. the good will also become bad. Right, so you need

  536. to be aware. And that's always say hang or you

  537. know disciple that is all to build each other up

  538. as well. There's a purpose for it. It's not just

  539. to have fun. It's what I'm trying to say here, right,

  540. It's very important. And like I said earlier, the closer

  541. you are in the reship, the greater influence. So who

  542. are your children hanging out with?

  543. Do you know? Should you know?

  544. I think the answer is yes you should because if

  545. you do not do that again you hear stories about

  546. mixing a bad company and then it's too late. You

  547. already don't have a relationship, and how can you then

  548. sweep in and then try to fix the problem. Okay,

  549. So the Bible is also have a lot of these

  550. anods of truth and instructions for you to do this well.

  551. And again, even if you're not having children right now

  552. or not in the in the situation where you have children,

  553. you need to apply this to people that you're discipling

  554. with because they are quote unquote your children that you're

  555. caring for at this point in time.

  556. Okay, So.

  557. Story time, Esure recently came to me and it was

  558. very afraid. This was about two weeks ago.

  559. Okay.

  560. He came to me with his report, not card, report sheet.

  561. He gives a report sheet. Right after a long time,

  562. after a long weekend, he came to me. He's and

  563. he came trembling and all that, bro, what's wrong? And

  564. I'm not gonna what's wrong? You know.

  565. Uh.

  566. Then we finally sat down after he spoke to mummy.

  567. Mammy already gave him an ear foolady. Then he came

  568. to me and then.

  569. He was afraid.

  570. By sat down him and talked to him. Obviously, as

  571. you can tell from the tone, maybe perhaps the results

  572. were not. Again, we're not those kinds like you all

  573. is kind of a parent, it's more like from the

  574. last time we spoke many terms ago. He made some

  575. promises and he didn't follow trough and then because of

  576. that the results were not so good. So it's more

  577. on that kind of perspective. Okay, but both Jess and

  578. myself we understood this very important what he called this

  579. principle that we shouldn't overreact or react to quickly. We

  580. should allow the kid to talk first. Right, communications were important,

  581. and all people, even leaders workplaces, you understand that you

  582. need to nurture the younger ones. You need to allow

  583. him to talk first, and not just help come KPI

  584. and the kind of thing, right, you need to nurture

  585. listen out why give them the benefit of doubt? And

  586. this is exactly what we did as I listened to

  587. you know, like inside they're like, you know, listen, listen, listen.

  588. So it's what's going on, you know why? You know,

  589. then after much hesitation, he could quickly explain himself.

  590. Basically it's a slackert. He needs to be reminded. Uh,

  591. he didn't bring his work home.

  592. So half the time he didn't do well is because

  593. he didn't didn't submit his work. Why because he didn't

  594. bring his work home, and I did bring the whole

  595. back home. Back when I was young, I used to

  596. bring my whole back to the school. Not got lockers,

  597. you know.

  598. So he didn't remember his books.

  599. That's why I can I do his homework, and that's

  600. why I can I submit. That's a long story shot,

  601. and that's why he didn't do so well, that kind

  602. of a thing like, so what can you do?

  603. I'm like, you bring your book long and bring back ala.

  604. You know.

  605. So so of course talk talk talk talk talk, uh practicipations,

  606. uh you know, salate or what it was in English, uh,

  607. slip in, slip in some biblical truths to to the

  608. situation as well.

  609. You know, uh, you know it's my own story. La.

  610. You know you need to be diligent, you know. You

  611. know it says whatever you do do to the Lord.

  612. Though those kind of things are you know, you work

  613. for the Lord, you know, give it your best when

  614. you study, et cetera, et cetera.

  615. So can I tell something?

  616. He cried, right, even though I was not scolding him.

  617. He cried right, but he will open up. He opened up,

  618. and then he he he then set himself some targets

  619. and so far that right, so far he's been falling

  620. through the last two weeks of making it. So he

  621. was he committed to like this time, this time on Sunday,

  622. you'll spend time doing this. He'll bring all his books home,

  623. regardless whatever subjects is supposed to do so that that's

  624. just practical. Yeah, it is practical.

  625. He did it.

  626. I didn't really coach him, but I helped them. I

  627. supported him in the process, but I allowed him to communicate.

  628. And you see, it's a simple thing. But actually that

  629. is where relationship. It's also built trust. Right of course,

  630. I can just go and by the way, we don't.

  631. We don't.

  632. We don't wag or we don't discipline him in that sense,

  633. but we sometimes in the past reprimand verbally, and I

  634. realized that doesn't help. So I try something new here.

  635. Let's see, hopefully it works. But it's a sipleship, right.

  636. Relationship is very important. And so far he's still confident,

  637. he's still doing his part. Ah, and we are not

  638. using punishment or dangling. Used to I used to dangle

  639. by because rewards in the past.

  640. Let's not do that. But we do, praise God.

  641. We've seen improvements in the last couple of days and

  642. what I'm trying to say here is that really important model. Secondly,

  643. just do relation, spend time with them, because the worst

  644. that happens that actually you don't come and talk to

  645. me at all when he feels that that is not approachable.

  646. And then how can disciple the kid then or anybody else? Again,

  647. it could be somebody appear that you're discipling. If you've

  648. always there to just it doesn't get anywhere, It doesn't

  649. build that person. So be gentle to your disciples, all right,

  650. build relationship. Then only can talk to them and really

  651. build together. Last point, right, intention intentional is the main

  652. way here, and the idea here is really that we

  653. don't want to sell them things that are effective or

  654. things that are that works happens by chance, okay, it

  655. often requires some intentional intervention or intentional work that is

  656. placed there. And that's why I purposely put this arrow there.

  657. You know, you don't just simply shoot left and the

  658. arrow and the right. It's very intentional, all right. And

  659. this let's look at Ephesian six four.

  660. I have I have a.

  661. Whole verse there bouts jumps. Just read the first part

  662. about children obeying their parents or children obey your parents

  663. in the Lord, for.

  664. It is right. So Zach, you left the room.

  665. Okay, that might obey your parents, honor your father, your

  666. mother with the first commandment, with this promise, and that

  667. it may be well with you, and you may live

  668. a long life again, long life or it's all about

  669. living long okay. And this is the part that is

  670. so important for parents. And here's his father's but it's interchangeable, right, fathers,

  671. do not provoke your children to wrath.

  672. Wow.

  673. When I first read them, I'm like, don't anger them,

  674. don't don't put them until they get angry. But bring

  675. them up in training and admonition. And what this means

  676. is really true discipline, true instruction of the Lord. Now

  677. when you read this right, m yeah, it'sracular. Do not

  678. promote them, do not jab them for no reason, but

  679. instead discipline. Of course, all these Roman patients give instructions

  680. forgive give them second chance, et cetera, et cetera. It's

  681. very important, right, And you bring them up, nourish them,

  682. inspire them instead of just knocking them, because when you

  683. knock them, they don't. Sometimes they you knock them too hard,

  684. they can't come back up again. Right, And it's a

  685. comment commandment, do not provoke, but bring them up. That's

  686. that's what it says here in Problems Training two six

  687. it uses the same language. Okay, it says train up

  688. a child in the way he should go. And the

  689. last part is and even when he is old, he

  690. will not depart in it. Now, how many you know,

  691. good training stays you forever. It's like riding a bike

  692. kind of thing. If you actually teach a kid how

  693. to ride a bike correctly, there's a lot of less correction,

  694. and even if he grows or you haven't readen the

  695. bike for a while, you still know you'll come back

  696. to you. And that's why sometimes the early parts of

  697. that teaching is very important. By the way, my kids

  698. learn how to ride a but in four hours before that,

  699. no nothing, We didn't have training wheels before as well.

  700. I just read up.

  701. And then there's this very brutal way of teaching them

  702. how to do. But they in four hours where he's gone,

  703. they learned the boat them learned on the same day.

  704. Maybe Ashue was a bit longer. He cried a lot crying,

  705. but yeah, but you teach them right, you set them

  706. better rather than to undo the wheels and all that,

  707. and what was listening anyway?

  708. There's something else.

  709. But now, of course, when we read the word train,

  710. we think of the natural train. But in Hebrew the

  711. word trains actually uh china, I'm not too sure, okay,

  712. And it means to get them started, to train as well,

  713. but to dedicate and to get them started.

  714. All right.

  715. Now, if you read through the some of the scriptures

  716. they also use this word is actually being used, uh

  717. to to to be referred to the palette or the

  718. gums or the roof of the mouth. And what they

  719. do with Hebrew babies is that they actually rub some

  720. sweet juice, something sweet and the top of the mouth

  721. to stimulate or initiate the reflex of the suck sucking, right,

  722. just like how sometimes modern day we put the kid,

  723. the newborn near the bosom and the boot right so

  724. that they can then start to develop that sucking thing.

  725. Back then they used to put something sweet there. Okay.

  726. So that's the word train, you know English language, to

  727. train up. Okay, it's important because it is very it's

  728. not just training, but it's important to kick start. And

  729. that is the word being used in the scriptures that

  730. we just read to kick start. This relationship to kick start.

  731. So it's very intentional.

  732. There's a purpose.

  733. A purpose is there to create desire, because desire cannot

  734. well continue to develop. But if you don't create the

  735. right platform at the start, it will not come to

  736. this level of really wanting to to to you know,

  737. to run to be really disciples of Christ. Right, That's

  738. why it's very important here to understand the context. So

  739. how to kick start things.

  740. It's intentional.

  741. It cannot randomly happen, right, Some things that we do here,

  742. even this one here putting that suite thing, the peal

  743. and mouth, it's very calculated, right, and that is important.

  744. Now I'm going to end with one last story and

  745. then now you know, extreme can start coming up very soon.

  746. Uh maybe in a two minutes time. But yeah, some

  747. of you may know my son Zachary has got a

  748. problem with a medical problem I would say growing up. Okay,

  749. when even as a young kid, a.

  750. Baby, he used to vomit a lot.

  751. Uh, And we used to think that always because of

  752. long car rides, motion sickness, that kind of a thing.

  753. So he's very prone to warmitting flights to so warmut cars, warment.

  754. So that's why we both decided a those cloth seats.

  755. Let's go let the seats all the way because.

  756. Easy to clean.

  757. And literally every whether it's a five minute ride or

  758. you know, one hour ride, he'll vomit and it's like

  759. everywhere all over again. Let's not get more graphic than that, Okay,

  760. But when he grew older, it's not just a random

  761. small bouts of warming thing, which we you know, thought

  762. it was motion sickness. By the way, I got permission

  763. from Exact to share about this because you know, it's

  764. obviously a medical thing. As he grew older into primary school,

  765. it got worse. It became very frequent, to the point

  766. that his episodes can last for days. That means when

  767. he starts vomiting and he wakes up, he'll warm it

  768. throughout the day. Everything he consumes straight away comes out

  769. in about five to ten minutes and this will go

  770. on for five days.

  771. Uh and then yeah. In short, he's malnourish a little bit.

  772. He We've seen different specialists, hospitals are best friend, different hospitals,

  773. different specialists. He's got scans from up here all the

  774. way down here, everywhere. Whatever am has been done all

  775. parts to this to try and find out and this

  776. is something that has happened as early as six or

  777. seven years, all the way till his uh, you know,

  778. till the end of primary school. And you see, for

  779. a parent, right, it's one of the most hardest things

  780. for us to deal with, not only the logistics. You

  781. can take it out of school, fine parking, you know, hospitals, right,

  782. you'll be at least half a day one day kind

  783. of thing in termis you try to rushing back. We

  784. have to take leave, coordinate, lif coordinate. It's a lot

  785. of work. It's a lot of work. High medical bills

  786. as well. His like I said, his condition worsened to

  787. the point that he was on the spectrum, sorry to scale,

  788. the bare minimum of.

  789. Being underweight for his age.

  790. So it's actually was short as well, size already like

  791. this and short as well. Okay, so I don't know

  792. about fathers here, but as a father, you know, it's

  793. one of the most difficult experiences in my life, not

  794. knowing what I can do for him, right, because the

  795. father is always like the protector role, right, right, It

  796. felt like an not do anything. Like I said, We've

  797. done all we can in medical sense, and on top

  798. of that, something her the story before he's very traumatized

  799. with needles. So every time we go to the hospital

  800. it's like, you know, execution, and he used to scream

  801. her abuse at us for bringing him. The whole world

  802. will know him, uh, the whole even the emergency will

  803. all know him by name because of his uh, it's

  804. his screams.

  805. Okay.

  806. Now, what I want to stress in this or talk about,

  807. what I want to talk about in this particular thing,

  808. is that what I mean by intentional here is that

  809. when me and my wife went through this for more

  810. than six years, we were very intentional. We were there

  811. to be with him because he was also undergoing some

  812. complex thinking that something is wrong with him. So we

  813. continue to love him, help him, nurture him, and help

  814. him feel that nothing is wrong with him, at least

  815. in a medical sense, because he also like, is God

  816. punishing me somethimes? We have the style of thoughts, right, yeah,

  817. And even God spoke to both of us, you know,

  818. sometimes separately. And I know, as for myself, you know,

  819. there's always that wrestling with God.

  820. Is this God's voice? His voice? You know?

  821. Sometimes the voices were like, hey, why are you still

  822. doing this? Why are you still you know, being faithful

  823. to your Lord. Why are you still doing what you

  824. do maybe in church and not even know this. By

  825. the way, we are still operating, at least on the

  826. surface or an exterior as normal people in that stage

  827. of life, and still doing what we can, still give

  828. it our best for the Lord. Ah, still praying, still

  829. doing homes, still doing church. But we keep conveying to

  830. our family, zach essure and to say that, hey, we

  831. need to fiercely pray for this, we need to do this.

  832. In fact, pray and fasting. I've done, you know, next level,

  833. next level, next level. Every youth turn we pray and

  834. next level, and every chance we get the U turn

  835. we do praying fasting at another level. And you know,

  836. of course, the good thing about this story is that

  837. there's a happy ending. He's fourteen now and you can

  838. see it's almost as tall as me. After I think

  839. about five six years in let me read the date

  840. I took up this morning, April twenty twenty three, U

  841. turn after U turn, after spending five years or so

  842. battling this, praying for this, assuring them. My mantra at

  843. that time was always Romans eight twenty eight.

  844. You know, uh, you know, and.

  845. We know that in all things, God works for good

  846. of those who love him, and we have been caught

  847. according to His purpose. And that was what you know,

  848. we shared about as well to our kids. But you

  849. know what, on that faithful day, it just completely healed

  850. without any medical The doctors were like dumb struck, right,

  851. But what's important here is that, you know, we recently

  852. went to missions a few weeks a month ago, we

  853. also were journeying some missionaries and they had a you know,

  854. a kid with medical condition that you know, it's two

  855. years old. They can't, they can't. She she can't really

  856. move around too much. But the parents were just faithful

  857. doing what they do, and we could encourage them because

  858. of our own journey. To some extent, we prayed for

  859. them and everything is more relatable as well.

  860. So what I'm trying to say here is that.

  861. The only difference is that it's not that whether we

  862. go to different things or not, but it is actually

  863. a choice. And that's why I meant by being intentional,

  864. because and you decide which way you want to listen

  865. to what you want to do. Because we could easily

  866. just like okay, God enough, and Zach was always like

  867. you know I can't. He was so weak, like sometimes

  868. can't even get out of a bit. But we decided

  869. to just continue to go, support, nourish, encourage, and we

  870. know now that that season, at least for our family,

  871. it created an avenue to then, you know, witness to

  872. others or even encourage others. I don't know what your

  873. problems are. I don't know what it is that you're

  874. facing as well, but you see things that you go through.

  875. When you are intentional in your discipleship, you will be

  876. able to really see you know, our church, the peers

  877. in your schools, the peers in your campuses, your peers

  878. in your workplaces. It is really about what you are

  879. deciding how you respond. That is a choice, and that

  880. is discipleship. That is how you can model relationships having

  881. there and you're intentionally discipling them as you are going

  882. through and making those life choices. Remember, just to sum

  883. it all up, discipleship is about modeling, it's about building relationship,

  884. and it's being intentional about teaching the different ones the

  885. things of God and how you are to respond to

  886. even disappointments. So really don't think that this can't happen.

  887. You've got all the opportunities. Home is actually the safest

  888. and the most basic place you can start. So won't

  889. you just start today at home? And I say home,

  890. it's not just your call home, but beyond that as well,

  891. wherever your pleased.

  892. We hope you've been blessed by this message. For more
