  1. You're listening to a message to go from acts Church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. And so today we are at actually count already took

  4. some time, but call value number five. All right, so

  5. and if I'm going to flash it up on the screen.

  6. In short, it's disciplesh It focus. But the big idea

  7. is that we are saved. Oh it's more than just

  8. being saved. It's a short it's a short conclusion, but yeah,

  9. why are we saved? There must be a reason that

  10. we are saved because He's designed this as such that

  11. we are to then, you know, be disciplesh It focused.

  12. And of course today we will focus on what this

  13. actually means. All right, now before we begin, you know,

  14. I always like to ask questions, Oh you found, thanks

  15. for thanks for serving? And if I was first time guys,

  16. So if I mess up here, it's not because of her,

  17. it's because of me anyway. Yeah, so I'll sort of

  18. a first question over here. Now, when somebody when you

  19. when you when you see somebody, sometimes you may actually

  20. get this question from time to time. You know, what

  21. makes someone a good Christian? Right? And sometimes you have

  22. preconceived ideas, right, But if someone asked that question, right now,

  23. what would you say? What makes someone a good Christian?

  24. Not just any Christian, but a good Christian, a model Christian? Right?

  25. So what would you say? And he thoughts follow well, yeah,

  26. last last week's material? Anyway, Yes, you know would it?

  27. Would you say something like along the lines you know,

  28. someone who maybe comes to church on Sunday? That makes

  29. a person a good Christian? Right? Church at Tennis? Is that?

  30. Is that? Is that what is required? Maybe? Maybe? Or

  31. someone who knows the Bible reads the Bible, Bible knowledge

  32. very very I guess, does a lot of study, reads

  33. a lot? Or is it somebody who serves regularly in

  34. any ministry within church outside church, or maybe somebody who's

  35. been giving faithfully their time, their talents, their treasures, finances,

  36. et cetera. Or is it a leader who serves in

  37. small groups here here we call it homes. If someone's

  38. in leadership, is that a good Christian? All? Right? Now,

  39. let me say those are all wonderful things to say,

  40. and there are probably some traits of a good Christian,

  41. right But don't get me wrong, these are not just

  42. the only things that define a Christian or a good Christian.

  43. Because you probably have people that you know, I know

  44. people maybe I know people that have come to church

  45. regularly for many years, right, who have also given faithfully

  46. quote scriptures right, and even lift up their hands very

  47. high up higher than anybody else in service, have been

  48. doing this for ten years and still probably can easily

  49. get offended, can you know, be a little bit unforgiving,

  50. perhaps even maybe gossiping a little bit or even anxious

  51. in all things right, and maybe even making decisions that

  52. somebody from the outside world will look at it, Oh,

  53. this is actually very quote unquote worldly, okay, or how

  54. others would do. And again, honestly that is the case,

  55. right more often than not. Yes, you have all these things.

  56. All those are very nice things to have, but it

  57. doesn't actually mean or at least maybe looking at this,

  58. it doesn't actually mean the person is a good Christian. Okay,

  59. it doesn't stop there. There are traits. But then beyond that,

  60. so I guess for us a good Christian we are

  61. to then find out what it is to then become

  62. a good Christian? Right, how to mature lack of a better word,

  63. to grow into something? Now, what do you mean by grow?

  64. If if you thought about that, how do you then grow

  65. a good Christian for beal water, you know, honestly, how

  66. do you grow a great Christian? Or how do you

  67. become a good Christian? And that's the main focus today.

  68. It is true. If they didn't really guess it's true,

  69. disciplesh it all right, Discipleship is not just filling our

  70. heads or even our lives with all these good things.

  71. It's about actually forming or giving a blueprint of how

  72. we ought to live. And then that sort of translate

  73. to I guess good living or good behavior or output

  74. of that. Right, So just keep that sentence in your

  75. heart for now. So discipleship is not about filling our

  76. hits or lives with activities, with things, et cetera. But

  77. it's about forming our lives. Okay, and it'll make more

  78. sense at the end of today's message. Okay, we'll come

  79. back to this. So again, the core value today is discipleship.

  80. It's not just a program. Some of the things a

  81. programm here discipleship like, oh it's a program. Here we

  82. go again, they're trying to recruit more people to disciples

  83. et cetera. Ah No, but it's actually just beyond that.

  84. It's relational, right, it's the relationship. It's about walking with somebody, right,

  85. committing to somebody, right to someone, investing or the words

  86. that sometimes like, oh wow, investing. You know, when you

  87. invest your maybe your resources or even your finances in something,

  88. you would look at how that particular investment progresses or

  89. moves and all that. Right, and you invest in somebody,

  90. do you do the same? Probably probably, because why you

  91. spend quite a fair bit, not just monetary but time effort,

  92. you want to see it and and why are we

  93. investing is to then see lives transform, lives grow, And

  94. this is what ultimately we want to do, because that's

  95. the Jesus model. All right. So in a nutshell, all

  96. those things are good, but another way of saying, helping

  97. them is really just helping them become more like Jesus

  98. bottom line, right, So that is how you can then

  99. make somebody or somebody someone a good Christian again, not

  100. just merely saving up. But sometimes we often feel that, right,

  101. it's often just getting them across the line, get them safe.

  102. That's it. My job is done. But no, we are

  103. to do beyond that. Remember we talked about you know,

  104. maturing sons and daughters, right, what's that? Becoming more and

  105. more christ like. Right, So this is what we ought

  106. to ought to focus on. Now, before I go any further,

  107. let me just draw you to some scripture, because there's

  108. a church, we need to go through scriptures as well.

  109. X two forty two. Okay, this is the fellowship believers, right,

  110. So let's read here. They devoted themselves. I've purposely highlighted

  111. this word get devoted themselves to the apostles, teaching, and

  112. to the fellowship. So the position is learning the word

  113. fellowship means coming together, breaking a bread. Okay, they do

  114. communion every day. They also pray together. Now, of course,

  115. the Late Letter parts of it talks about then how

  116. God expanded the church and it grew and it continued

  117. to grow until today. And this is what it is.

  118. But the key thing here, right is the people they

  119. devoted themselves. Devoted. Devotion is actually a very big word.

  120. Right When you say somebody is a devoted sports fan,

  121. what do you think what comes to mind? The person

  122. is like Mark morning, afternoon, evening, nighttime, even when he's sleeping,

  123. he's often you know, thinking about his sports, talking about

  124. his club, et cetera, etcetera. That's devotion. So devotion is

  125. not just attending, not just checking in, not just visiting,

  126. not just playing a fool. They are devoting themselves. And

  127. that if you if you didn't really catch that, that's

  128. actually discipleship language, because for somebody to do all those

  129. things right every single day of their lives, right, that

  130. goes into the discipleship kind of a mindset. Do you

  131. catch it? Yeah? Devotion? Devotion? Okay, so I'm gonna be

  132. jump sting to the three points. You already have three

  133. points there anyway in your book that's on page Let

  134. me just get this right seventeen. Thank you. Uh. So

  135. the three key points is why is that discipleship important?

  136. Or simply why discipleship? What gives? What's this business of discipleship? Right? Uh?

  137. Short answers because Jesus commanded it? Okay, if you canna

  138. write it down, you can. Second question is what is

  139. the focus, well, you know, or what actually changes through

  140. this process? What is the end game? All right? And

  141. if you want the short answer, because some people just

  142. like to check this in and you can just leave

  143. straight away. Yeah, it's transformation. Transformation is what we're after.

  144. That's what discipleship does. It transformed specifically through the renewing

  145. of minds. Okay, and I'll get I'll get to that

  146. in a bit. Last one is how do we express

  147. discipleship in acts in church in general or simply how

  148. do we do it? How do we do it effectively?

  149. And short answer to this is just two words, not

  150. just discipleship, but relational discipleship. Okay, and it will make

  151. more sense later on. Okay, So point one, let's get

  152. back to point um one. So where do we begin? Right?

  153. So the question is why is discipleship important? Like I said,

  154. short answer was because you just said sola right he

  155. said it where Matthew train it? And this I think

  156. we all know because I think we spend quite a

  157. fabar time in one of the years talking about uh

  158. making disciples? Right, So this is the great commission? And

  159. what what does it say here? Okay, all authority has

  160. been given to me in heaven and on earth nineteen

  161. go go all right, and therefore go, sorry, go therefore

  162. and make disciples. Go and make disciples, not go and

  163. build a larger building. Of course that's also good. Not

  164. go and organize more amazing teens conferences. We had amazing

  165. things on her By the way, don't get me wrong.

  166. Those are good things as well. But that's not just

  167. the endgame. Don't go and get the crowds. Don't go

  168. and bring more attendees. Don't even go and make more

  169. believers believe only right, new believers believe only I think

  170. it's beyond that right, because that's why he said, go

  171. therefore and make disciples, make people that are devoted. If

  172. I could replace the word discipleship, right. So that's Jesus'

  173. final and last command. You know, when somebody is going

  174. for good, the last words right are usually the most important. No,

  175. nothing else to say it right, no time already, and

  176. then he has to say this, go therefore and make disciples.

  177. So why is it important? It's because he said that.

  178. He said to himself, Jesus said, go and make disciples.

  179. I can not go and make converts, but go and

  180. make disciples. Now, if you focus on the work goal,

  181. it's pretty interesting. Why do you think he used to

  182. work goal not? Why not just say make disciples? Have

  183. you thought about that? Why didn't you just to say

  184. make disciples? Could also work? Right? And game it's the same,

  185. But why do you say go we'll talk about that action? Right?

  186. He again, this is just a guest, right, he probably

  187. knows right, our nature is to stay put, is to

  188. not move, because if he hadn't, we probably wouldn't literally go, right,

  189. we are what's the expression creatures? Is the creature comfort

  190. or creatures of comfort? I'm not sure? Yeah, all right,

  191. my England a lay good okay anyway, but honestly that's

  192. the truth, right. We love comfort, We love things that

  193. are familiar. I've done this for quite some time. I

  194. like convenience, or we love convenience, right, So it's it's

  195. sometimes even let's see what it's convenience. It's easy for

  196. me to say i'll pray for you, you know, if

  197. I get a call or Joe, I'll pray for you, Dorry,

  198. I'll pray for you. But it takes a bit more

  199. effort to then go get the car keys, go meet

  200. up with my brother, talk true things, pray to you know,

  201. just connect. It's more right A text nowadays is I

  202. wouldn't say it's not effective. It's good, it's convenient, but

  203. it's not the going part, right, And this is it,

  204. Like I said, often it would take a bit more

  205. than just say i'll pray for you. Let's have coffee.

  206. Every fortnight. That is commitment that is going right. Or

  207. it could also be easy to say, okay, let me

  208. find a passion subscripture that will be applied to your life.

  209. Send that to you. Don't get me wrong, those are

  210. all good things as well. But to walk through or

  211. walk with a person through a season that they're in

  212. is the going part. So you see when my parents

  213. say it going takes a bit more right and discipleship again,

  214. it's next level stuff like devoted devotion. Okay, and if

  215. you didn't really catch that, right, I think I've spoken

  216. about discipleship. It definitely will cost you something, man, whether

  217. it's finances, time, energy, even emotions. It requires time, right,

  218. because walking with them require time, not yea literally walking

  219. with them it requires trust. Right, How do you build

  220. a relationship? Spend time. When you spend time, you build trust.

  221. When you build trust, relationship then begins to flourish, and

  222. then you can be more effective in this discipleship stuff. Oh,

  223. by the way, right, if you can go back to

  224. the previous light, I've got the three things at the

  225. bottom there. First one is actually all embedded larky, he

  226. didn't he didn't makeey all, I don't know. So first

  227. one is time, right, time, Second one is trust, as

  228. I mentioned to you, last one right is actually vision.

  229. We're a vision because you want the best in that person,

  230. and that requires a bit of foresight and vision. And

  231. then of course, with that vision in mind, there's also

  232. the commitment part. Okay, that's the goal of discipleship, because

  233. we are trying to get everyone to be more more

  234. like Jesus, and that is the three ingredients. Time, building

  235. that trust, having that vision for the other initial being

  236. less of yourself and more of that person. How do

  237. we then nurture that person wanting the best in them?

  238. And that's what discipleship calls for. Why again, so that

  239. they can become sons and daughters of the Kingdom of God,

  240. as we've shared a few weeks ago. All right, now,

  241. let me tell you a personal story. Ah. Some of

  242. you may know that I started running not too long

  243. ago this year, this year mid life crisis. Mid life crisis.

  244. I didn't get a motorcycle, right anyway, Yeah, I know

  245. some people did. Anyway, I'll come later. Anyway, many of

  246. you know that I started running. And when I first

  247. started to run, then a lot of pop gave me

  248. advice those seasoned people you do this, do that? You

  249. need new shoes you need no, no, not this shoes,

  250. but that shoe. You know you have to uh, you

  251. need things like electrolytes and what energy energy gel and

  252. whatnots and training apps. You need to get a watch

  253. that is synced up to this and that. And of

  254. course being an engineer, I would naturally okay, where's the

  255. signs behind this? Uh? What? What? Why? So? I researched

  256. to death. Uh. In short, even before I ventured into it, right,

  257. I read articles, even research articles, all right, to see

  258. what's the correlation between things. And of course there's so

  259. some days I will spend time watching people's experiences on

  260. some maybe some YouTube on certain aspects of doing this

  261. compact training plans. Ah. So yeah, it's it's a rabbit hole.

  262. I went to uh talk, learned about you know, heart

  263. rate zones and uh you know what type of shoes,

  264. what type of plating, and even got myself a heart

  265. rate monitor chest strap just to make sure that I

  266. know whether my left lick is uh, I use my

  267. left lick more my right lick. Model kind the kind

  268. of thing this is crazy? Uh, Piti for Strava as

  269. well anyway, yeah, but again jokes aside, how many of

  270. you know all this knowledge? Right? Does it improve my running? No? No, no,

  271. seriously seriously now if I if no, No, he's right,

  272. he's right, he's right. Right if I do not get out,

  273. what's the point? Cover line, good, cover line? No, but

  274. true true, true, true, Yeah. I can just be very knowledgeable, right,

  275. very knowledgeable. I can even write a write a entire whatever,

  276. but it doesn't improve anything. I can read about running,

  277. but it will never make me a runner. That makes sense.

  278. I can be watching YouTube clocking how many hours I don't,

  279. by the way, but let's say, if I do, will

  280. it improve my fitness? Probably? Negative? Right, negative sense right, yeah,

  281. or owning the latest garment I know some of you

  282. garment watches, but yeah, doesn't improve my running pace? No, no,

  283. nothing of this changes things. Now you know what change

  284. things around? I can tell you for those of you

  285. who know what I do. I get up at five

  286. in the morning and I was really shaking and hit

  287. really yeah. I still do my quiet time, I short prayer,

  288. I have some breakfast, then I start running. Now people say,

  289. why sol you? Because I still don't interrupt my life.

  290. I still want to be able to, you know, do

  291. things with my kids, send them to school, et cetera,

  292. et cetera. So this is what I do. Don't ask

  293. me how I do, but there's a do so, but

  294. that's what's what I do. You do that wake up early,

  295. put on your shoes, start running again and again and again,

  296. day after day, week after week, month after month, okay.

  297. And that's how change happened. And that's how quote unquote

  298. transformation happened. I didn't us to do this, right. It's

  299. a process. It's not just knowledge, because information alone is

  300. very limiting. Right. And if you didn't catch all that right,

  301. there is discipleship. Also. Why do I say that? It's

  302. because discipleship right. The route would also share with the

  303. word discipline right in Latin, it's deserr okay, which is

  304. learned okay, and disciplus pullus sorry is student or pupil okay.

  305. And the two together is always talk talk about things

  306. like training and instruction, and of course you know you

  307. test meal about the learner, right the pupil. You know,

  308. spiritual practices or spiritual disciplines, that is disciplesh it right.

  309. Disciples talks about self control, you know, not eating certain

  310. things because I know and I practice right. And lastly, accountability.

  311. Accountability is also a big thing. And again that it's

  312. not just historical, it's also biliblical. Yeah, because why you

  313. know that if you go through a proper sort of

  314. program or a coach that watch over you, then you

  315. start to move toward the right direction. Right. So yeah, again,

  316. it's not just simply learning something new, because if you

  317. just learn something new, you it's allowing truth to come in,

  318. but not allowing the truth to actually start shaping you. Okay,

  319. so yeah, time trust vision. I mentioned that already walking

  320. in somebody, trusting somebody. Let's just impactice a little bit more. Okay,

  321. time now, when you walk the person, right, you definitely

  322. have to take some time to to see that person.

  323. It's not a microwave kind of Uh. You put something in,

  324. push some buttons, and then straight away the maturity kicks in. Right.

  325. You can't grow a treat overnight. Parents, you notice, right,

  326. or even uh those that are in uh teachers or coaches.

  327. You know, growth is slow. Growth takes time, but that

  328. slow progress actually gets you stronger, faster, replace it whatever, Okay,

  329. much more mature. That's why I'm when you commit to

  330. this discipleship program program you have to invest and the

  331. person also has to reciprocate that h investment in the

  332. time as well. And trust I mentioned this rebuilding relationship.

  333. How many of you would start speaking or allowing people

  334. to speak into your life when there's no tree us right,

  335. or even let's say back to Sportsland, you think if

  336. that person has no relationship in me, eating whatever he says,

  337. I listen to him. And so sometimes all those things

  338. I read so like I don't know the guy, but

  339. somebody I know walk before you know. I think I

  340. can take it a bit more openly. And of course

  341. vision I mentioned to you is really helping people, the

  342. person becoming more more like Jesus. Now let me transia

  343. to my second point. The second point is important because

  344. if discipleship is so important, like we just said, and

  345. we sort of talked a little bit about how what

  346. discipleship is trying to produce, but because if we don't

  347. know what the goal is, right, uh, we also may

  348. be celebrating the wrong things as as a church. Okay,

  349. what I mean by that? Sometimes you hear this right? Oh,

  350. last time I said this was earlier teens. We had

  351. the biggest attendance. Ever, don't get me wrong, those good things,

  352. but sometimes we celebrate that kind of a stats more

  353. than how many you know our disciples or or you

  354. know last week we had a record breaking attendance. Here,

  355. not saying last week, but let's say again it's not important.

  356. I mean, it's good, but it's not the most important thing.

  357. And that's what the core values reminded discipleship. It's actually

  358. deeper than these quote unquote surface st because we're talking

  359. about transformation. Now, why is this important? Romans twelve? Okay,

  360. it says here NKJV, do not be conformed to this world,

  361. but be quote unquote transformed by the renewing of mine,

  362. that you may prove what is what is that good

  363. and acceptable and perfect will of God. Now I like

  364. the NLT version better because it's easier to understand because

  365. it's more local sorry native or simple English. Okay. It says,

  366. don't copy the behavior and custom of this world, all right,

  367. but let God transform you into a new person. Now

  368. what does this mean by new person? By changing the

  369. way you think? Changing the way you think again, knowledge,

  370. Like it's not using the example knowledge if it doesn't

  371. change the way you think what's the point you just

  372. store on me. But when you think it, you live it.

  373. It's a different thing. And that's what we of course

  374. the last bit talks about then, you know, being in

  375. line with God's will, and we sing so much about

  376. being in line God's will, et cetera. This is what

  377. it is. Allow God to transform you how by renewing

  378. your mind? How? Yeah, the side push it, SI push it? Now.

  379. I love this worst because Paul doesn't simply tell us

  380. what God wants, only he tells us how God changes this.

  381. How transformation ex how signing the words won't come any more.

  382. Transformation but specifically that's right, comes through the renewing of

  383. your mind. Not merely changing or our behavior or change

  384. our routines, but really changing the way we think first

  385. before all those things come. Now, if you think that

  386. you discipleship is only like a program you subscribe to it,

  387. let me ask you to re rephrase that thinking a

  388. little bit again, because why someone or something is already

  389. discipling you every day of your life. What I mean

  390. by that what you consume so question is who's discipling you?

  391. It's social media discipling you targeted ads, Netflix. Now this

  392. is even more beyond Netflix. Right, there's so many TikTok

  393. You know, a lot of kids are actually discipled by TikTok? Right.

  394. Are the news, whether it's good or bad, discipling you.

  395. It's your workplace discipling you, or your schools, your universities,

  396. all your friends, your peer You hear this peer pressure stuff?

  397. Are they discipling you? The world constantly disciple you, whether

  398. you like it or not, whether you realize it or not. Right,

  399. what success looks like. They will tell you what happiness

  400. looks like, what your relationship should look like, what your

  401. marriage look like, what money is for, or even what

  402. your identity should be like. That is discipleship by the world.

  403. Every single day you're bombarded by voices shaping the way

  404. we think, isn't it. That's why Paul, even in this

  405. wisdom many years ago, before all these things came into

  406. the picture, don't be confirmed. In other words, don't let

  407. allow the world to squeeze you into this mode that

  408. this is the right way to live. Right, Because once

  409. you're thinking is shaped, your life will follow simple scripture. Right.

  410. But somehow, yeah, we overlook it now again, engineering head right, engineering,

  411. teach me this right structural engineering. Right, when you want

  412. to build something, what does it start off with? Okay,

  413. even before that, it starts off with the blueprint. Right,

  414. You don't just go im poor the concrete or poorer

  415. or whatever. You begin with the blueprint. Yeah, of course

  416. he has the foundation and then the building, et cetera.

  417. If the blueprint or the plans is not right, the

  418. foundation will not be right, the building will not be right,

  419. and then everything will eventually be will fail. The same

  420. goes for spiritual You know your spiritual life as well. Right,

  421. If our lives are not built on the foundation of actual, proper,

  422. godly thinking, that blueprint is not right, everything else will

  423. not be right. If my thinking is wrong, my decisions

  424. will eventually be wrong. Right, And if my decisions are wrong,

  425. my direct direction long term direction will also go off. Tangent.

  426. I think I'm going to share what I think I'm

  427. going to Panang by going down south to Joho, But

  428. I just don't realize it because I follow ways. His

  429. ways are higher than my ways. No bad Joe, bad

  430. Joe anyway anyway, Yeah, okay, side joke. That's why discipleship

  431. begins really in the mind. It is important right now,

  432. point number two. What is the focus now? I said

  433. this already, right, Knowledge alone never changes anybody. No, we

  434. all know this, right. Smoking kills, sugars are healthy. What else?

  435. Exercise is good, sleep is important. Guilty as well? I

  436. sleep four hours a day. Yeah, so knowledge alone doesn't

  437. change behavior. Right. So if you see this here, right,

  438. I purposely put this here knowledge transformation And this is

  439. the missing piece most of the time, renew of the mind,

  440. the gap of how the renew your mind, This sipuship.

  441. So the gap is always or the bridge is always

  442. the sipleship. Now you've probably heard of this thing, this

  443. this word, or maybe not. You know repentance, right. The

  444. Greek word for repentance is meta noia right, ah, meta noia? Okay?

  445. What does it mean? Or most of the time we think, oh,

  446. I'm sorry, so sorry, or I'm feeling very emotional. God

  447. spoke to me crying during worship, coming to the altar,

  448. sobbing again. Those are all beautiful moments, but it's not

  449. the whole picture, right, because repentance actually literally means, at

  450. least the Greek definition, a change of mind and a

  451. change of heart, okay, or expelciitis is a fundamental change

  452. in the thinking and mindset. So again somebody came and

  453. come to the altar crying and still leave thinking the

  454. same way five minutes later. Right, I can feel emotional

  455. about when I go home, I continue to live how

  456. I lived before? Why? Because no transformation happened here. But

  457. sometimes we think, oh repentance, a lord, I repent what

  458. I give you my heart? Go home when somewhere else ready? Right? Yeah,

  459. so Pastor, can I sit this right? Taken for some

  460. of his material repentance isn't proven when somebody someone prays

  461. for you. Sometimes I need I need help pray for me.

  462. Repentance is revealed when somebody walks away and refused to

  463. live the same way. Again. It's not in his book

  464. of quotes yet, but I think it's very powerful because

  465. it really is when you do a U turn or

  466. when you change the way you live. That's what true

  467. repentance is. Right. Why because again root work, you know

  468. in Greek change of thinking, and when you change your thinking,

  469. you also change your behavior. But when there's no change

  470. in thinking, you get start a previous like place, previous life.

  471. You don't have this because you didn't do this. Simple

  472. but powerful. Let me give you a simplistic illustration. Okay,

  473. I just recently when I saw a doctor, so it's

  474. very fresh one two months ago. Although although all the

  475. results are actually pretty okay. But you know, doctor can

  476. tell you this, Oh you know your high BLO pressures

  477. is a little bit high, dangerously high. Or you need

  478. to stop smoking, or you need to do some weight,

  479. you need more excise, et cetera, et cetera. Now the

  480. patient right can be crying, uh and they say, oh,

  481. thank you doctor, thank you that you've changed my life.

  482. You've revealed to me what is wrong. And let's say

  483. you found a Christian doctor. The doctor came and pray

  484. for you, right, pray for the patient before the patient

  485. leaves next morning. If the patient decides to light a

  486. cigarette or order nasilla mar tamba, you know at samba

  487. at igabilis, et cetera, get three cans of coke Coca cola,

  488. and never exercises. You see what happened there? Six months later,

  489. what happens any change? Probably not probably get even not

  490. so good report. Right, And that's the thing the questions here,

  491. right is did he understand, Yes, he understood knowledge? Was

  492. there was he emotional? Yeah? Probably conviction or so. Then

  493. then but what's he transformed? Simple example? Right, But that's

  494. sometimes how we approach God and everything else. And again,

  495. information is only the beginning the new way of thinking

  496. quote unquote, renewer our mind is the key here because

  497. information or knowledge alone doesn't change your behavior. And as

  498. I mentioned you, the get there is renewer renewer mind.

  499. How true disciplesh it. That's what why discipleship matters, guys.

  500. It's not just merely teaching us the truth. Is telling

  501. us or asking or demanding us to then learn to

  502. think differently. And you have that journey true discipleship, you

  503. are one step closer to that transformation. And as I

  504. mentioned earlier, in transformation is not a microwave kind of thing.

  505. It takes time, right, even takes time to teach the

  506. word I'm already like whoa you know, takes time, but

  507. it takes even more time to model the word. You know,

  508. some of the guys that have journeyed with, you know,

  509. many years with like Joe, we spent many many years

  510. with him. I think they see my life outside of

  511. Sunday Ignite in my pajamas as well, you know, I

  512. mean Joe Asideala you know it takes time, right to

  513. even model it after somebody parents. You know this as well. Right,

  514. you can say something and do something else, but that's

  515. what they see most, not just your instruction or your

  516. good advice. It's actually seeing the way you live. But

  517. notice this, God didn't say you go figure out that,

  518. and that's why he said disciples ship, right, So go

  519. and rap shoulders learn figuring this out. Even Paul understood

  520. this to say what they say, Paul, imitate me as

  521. I imitate Christ. Not become another Paul. Not become another

  522. you know, Daniel Kong or whatever. You imitate me as

  523. I imitate Christ. Watch how I'm following Jesus and walk

  524. with me and what like, Jesus don't walk like me.

  525. By the way, I'm a bit injured, so I also

  526. walk funny. But just like, yeah, that's discipleship. That's discipleship. Right.

  527. So can I come back to running again because I've

  528. stayed in that season one thing I discovered before I

  529. had all this knowledge and you know, all that kind

  530. of thing. I always thought that running was very simple.

  531. How if you can be left right, left, right, left right,

  532. and here right repeats and repeat, you get there, right.

  533. But you know, every step I put forward. When I

  534. started training, I realized one thing. It's more than just

  535. the mechanics of left and right, the way you breathe,

  536. whether you breathe out first or briefe in first, you're pacing.

  537. Let means to say, if you need to hit this

  538. particular distance, you need to start slow, which I don't like.

  539. You know, and strong, those kind of things like cadence, repetition,

  540. your stride, how long your distance, recovery, how much you

  541. rests before your next one. I enjoy myself because I

  542. didn't recover. Yeah, but did you know that the way

  543. I thought aout running right, it was all wrong, you know,

  544. before I went deep into it. But every time I

  545. learned I tried it out, I learned something new. Because again,

  546. all those knowledge, right is somebody else's experience. Everybody's build differently.

  547. I'm also a bit older, so my experience will a

  548. bit different. But you take those mutches and apply it right,

  549. apply it. But if I kept just thinking the old way, firstly,

  550. I will not be able to keep running you know better,

  551. et cetera. So growth definitely not just in the physical.

  552. You need to actually change your first the way you

  553. apply certain things. And again, christian life is the same thing. Right,

  554. You don't naturally want to become all like Jesus. On

  555. let's put his way then, how many of you yeah, yeah,

  556. I want to look out Jesus. No, you will serve yourself.

  557. And that's very natural, right you. Naturally you want to

  558. come more and more like yourself. What's convenient, et cetera.

  559. But when your mindset is renewed, right, that's where the

  560. power begins. So I wrote up here in a dangerous mistake.

  561. I think one of the greatest dangers for Christianity today, right,

  562. is that there's a con fusion between information and transformation.

  563. Sometimes we think, Okay, I download more, I listen to

  564. more good materials I find them, attend the best conferences

  565. out there, pay top dollar, read the books and all

  566. that kind of things. Subscribe to podcasts, you know, go

  567. for courses and all that. Again, also not bad. They

  568. are meant to help you. They are wonderful. But information

  569. alone doesn't transform, never changes anybody. Now. I've met people

  570. as well who knows the Bible better than me, but

  571. struggle to maybe forgive people have more pride. I'm not

  572. saying that I don't have pride. I have pride as well,

  573. or have more fear in things you know, less trust

  574. in God and you know struggle, et cetera. Sorry, you're

  575. feel in the blanks. Why? Because information alone isn't sufficient transformation.

  576. So the greatest I put here, the greatest enemy of

  577. transformation is actually ignorance because we think that information is

  578. sufficient or information is enough. That's it. I am there,

  579. and I'm going to your pause for a while. Can

  580. I just ask you all this one question? Do not

  581. answer a lot? Okay, just think in your heads right,

  582. think out loud, or answer God within yourself? How has

  583. your thinking changed over the last twelve months? How has

  584. your thinking change? Not your circumstances, not your job, not

  585. your income, not your children, et cetera. How has your

  586. thinking change when conflict comes? Do you think more like Jesus?

  587. When you're angry or when somebody hurts you? Do you

  588. think more like Jesus? When money is tight? Or when

  589. you have an argument with your children or your children

  590. disappoint you? Do you think more like Jesus? Why are

  591. you looking at me? Is that that's kidding? Yeah? But true? True?

  592. Has your thinking change? Has your thinking change? Because again,

  593. discipleship is not measured by how much scripture we can quote.

  594. The real assets are you transformed and you are behaving

  595. like Jesus through all those things? Final point asked point h,

  596. So if discipleship, if you didn't catch it's already it's

  597. transformation right now, how do you actually then bring that transformation?

  598. How do you make it happen? Jesus? Did he leave

  599. us alone? He could have written multiple resources, books, et cetera,

  600. come up with YouTube videos even and then you figure

  601. out could have you know? Of cause sure you could,

  602. like you wanted to just snap with fingers and design.

  603. But no, he didn't, right, he didn't involves if you

  604. don't catch that earlier that I gave you the thing,

  605. right is relational discipleship. You walk, people, do life together,

  606. learn from one another. Right, so we know that? Okay,

  607. So just to recap why discipleship matters is because he

  608. said so, right, what's the focus? Transformation? That's the main endgame.

  609. The questions as how all right? All right? And again

  610. let me just come to timer time alone. She's not

  611. enough of zon. No, let me explain time alone. If

  612. you do time alone, does it mature you? Probably not?

  613. Some Christians, right, you know they've been living for thirty

  614. years being a Christian, but they may me living year

  615. one for thirty years of maturityaler, you know, like in

  616. the in the schooling kind of life. Right, if you

  617. do not finish the material in let's say standard for

  618. if you keep on repeating standard force and the force

  619. and the force and the force that four or thirty years,

  620. are you at level thirty? No, you stay at level four.

  621. So some Christians like that and you do it alone, right,

  622. sometimes you know you have a help, right, you cannot

  623. really progress reisally super analogy here. So yes, time alone

  624. doesn't mature us because it can be repeating the same

  625. thing away. So growth is not automatic. Right, and that's

  626. where the core value, the third core value is, I

  627. mean the fifth core value is important. So the next slide,

  628. how do we express the cuboss access relational cybership? Right?

  629. So again, relational not a program, not a curriculum, not

  630. a pyramid scheme, not a classroom even right, it's relationship.

  631. Now let's break it down. I know the words are

  632. a bit small down there, but let's break it down.

  633. A or one is doing life together, doing life together? Huh?

  634. Why doing life together. Why I'm happy myself. Jesus didn't

  635. build a classroom, right, he he didn't write a book,

  636. He didn't leave his child alone too long. Right. He

  637. could have also opened the start up the biggest Bible college.

  638. You know, he could if he wanted to. But instead

  639. he chose twelve ordinary people. Walk with them, travel with them,

  640. with them, bankside. I'm sorry they shouldn't go there, but

  641. you know, laugh with them, corrected them, watch them fail,

  642. and also picked them up and restored them when the

  643. time it's right, for three whole years, every day, three

  644. whole years. Let's discipleship. Sometimes we in the modern day

  645. we think, oh, you know, it's a gathering a table

  646. people or fellowship being laughing and that, Yeah, that's one

  647. portion of it. Or it's a conversation after church, badminton,

  648. after church, coffee, after homes what else? Uh, what's the

  649. thing now? I am good? Or whatever it is you know,

  650. or a phone call, you know, phone call, hey how

  651. are you doing? Hospital visits? Or let's ride home together

  652. during session m hmm, yeah, modern day, modern day, right,

  653. those experiences, those live shed is one aspect of it.

  654. But again it goes beyond just the time spent right,

  655. transmission has to happen point number two. Now, one thing

  656. I've learned over the years, especially leadership, whether it's leadership

  657. and church or leadership at work. Okay, many people one

  658. to communicate or give instructions, especially in leadership kind of capacity,

  659. but they don't connect first. Parents, you know this, right?

  660. What happens when you do that? You in your room? Uh,

  661. finish your homework, you know, put this here or put

  662. that there? You know, somehow those words are just bounce

  663. off the wall and wouldn't go anywhere. Right, they cannot

  664. hear you? Right? Why why why didn't hear I think

  665. it's because the the connection, or rather the instruction comes

  666. first before uh, the you know, spending time. That's sorry,

  667. the connection didn't happen yet, but the communication when it hit.

  668. So sometimes you know, I also guilty and I see something, Okay,

  669. I missing encouraging word to that person. But if I

  670. don't have a connection that person whatever, even though most

  671. beautifully written encouragement doesn't go anywhere. In fact, some of

  672. my lousiest communication, right is the is because for connection, right,

  673. same spirituality, Right, someone receives encouragement or even correction a

  674. bit more openly when there's firstly some relationship or connection there,

  675. didn't I say that before time builds trust discipleshit takes time,

  676. no shortguturn. Trust grows slowly. Man in the McDonald's mentality

  677. these days a drive thru mentality. One thing's quick. Wait

  678. five minutes, so you complain a day Netflix generation and

  679. click on demand and I want it now. Yeah, it

  680. takes time, guys. Trust cannot be microwave. Right, what do

  681. you think you just spent three years and not three

  682. hours or three minutes. It takes time. He wasn't in

  683. a hurry either, actually, but sometimes we are more impatient

  684. than Jesus himself. He wanted now. Second point, being real

  685. part of relational discipleship, right, is just being authentic, being transparent,

  686. being vulnerable, even confident in our weakness. Right? Can I

  687. be honest? Sometimes Christians pretend that they're mature. They pretend

  688. everything's okay. I'm blessed Luiah, thank you Jesus, I'm highly favored,

  689. I'm doing great. Meanwhile, really they are struggling. Maybe the

  690. marriage is struggling, Anxiety is overwhelming them, prayer life is dry,

  691. faith doesn't seem to be there. They feel weak, But

  692. it's okay to be real, guys, It's okay real. I

  693. remember this one phrase ever since the beginning of time

  694. that I know pass can if you always say this,

  695. I don't mind washing what's experience? I don't mind washing

  696. my dirty linen in front of people? And he said this.

  697. Other words to follow later is so that others can

  698. become clean, so that they can learn from it. What

  699. a picture, right, Yeah, not because we are proud of failures,

  700. you know, guys, don't get me wrong, don't don't. Don't

  701. go and twist the thing a little bit. I'm not

  702. proud of our failures, but because it may be able

  703. to give somebody some hope. Hey, if you can happen

  704. to you, it can happen to me. And if I

  705. can persevere, I I can do it. You can do

  706. it too, right, and I'm not immune to it as well,

  707. et cetera. And as I mentioned to you, I've been

  708. a leader for quite some time, right homes leader, church

  709. plan pastor. I can tell that people rarely open up

  710. right when when I speak to them, not because you know,

  711. we impress them as leaders, et cetera, but they open

  712. up because firstly, you're honest. First, hey, I've gone through

  713. this even when you talk to people. People, but still,

  714. what's your greatest achievement? Don't they don't it's not natural,

  715. but the moment you share hey, I'm struggled through this

  716. as well. Hey, I wrestled fear as well. All right,

  717. I made mistakes, I messed up. Yeah, Suddenly everybody relaxes

  718. and says, hey, I'm not the only one. And that's

  719. when you can and then start to speaking too, and

  720. both not just encouraged, but both also. But sure, that's

  721. when healing can also begin. Right now, Paul understood this.

  722. He didn't say, hey, look how strong I am. You know,

  723. my son is trying to build up his muscles, so

  724. I always think of him and I do this. He says,

  725. he's going to walk through the doors side of ways

  726. because you talked to him later. Yeah, it's a bit funny, Yeah, Paul,

  727. he didn't look. He didn't say look how strong? And

  728. he said when I'm weak right then? Yeah? Strong? Why

  729. because confidence wasn't in himself, It's actually in God's grace.

  730. So sometimes the greatest gift in short, even as he

  731. disciples are, this a gift that can give somebody is

  732. not just talk about success stories, but telling them, Hey,

  733. this is how God met me when I was in

  734. my struggling, in my weakness. Keep it real right. And

  735. the last point in this section here is, you know,

  736. relational discipleship always requires commitment. Hey, commitment, you know, big

  737. time commitment. How time, maybe more finances? Right? You know

  738. some of you may know we myself and my wife,

  739. we also spend a lot of time with a lot

  740. of people you know in our church, some young families,

  741. some some some you know, young young working adults, even

  742. camp more teens. Now, yeah, we don't just spend time

  743. our leaders, by the way we do, but not just

  744. our leaders. Why because I think we believe investing into

  745. their leadership or rather to disciple them. Right, do you

  746. think it's easy? I'm still doing it. But let's see

  747. the same example we have to in the younger days.

  748. You have to arrange for the kids what to do

  749. with the kids, drive out sometimes you want to drag

  750. the kids along. So a lot of you journey of us.

  751. You know that life is messive the kids. That's how

  752. now they're more independently. I want to stay home because

  753. the adults, et cetera. But we do this drive out

  754. making arrangements, the kids drag them along again and again

  755. and again, just to spend a few hours with people. Yeap,

  756. think about it, time kare context, stress to traffic, right,

  757. coordination meals. Sometimes we do it when our kids are

  758. not there, so away time away from our kids as well.

  759. Cause the energy costs or rising petrol prices et cetera,

  760. you know, not cheap these days. But we still do it.

  761. Why because we realize that we're not just investing in

  762. the meeting per se, We're investing in people. Because as

  763. I already alluded to your disciplesh it will cost something time, energy, convenience,

  764. even finances. So real discipleshit's expensive. By guys, it's expensive,

  765. definitely take time on, right, But can I just tell

  766. you doing it for quite some time, I think it's

  767. worth it. As we do it again, I'll probably do

  768. five more time just that I can't. So now we

  769. also empower different ones to do this as well. Right,

  770. so you haven't seen you yet or when time of

  771. view yet, yeah, is coming right, That's why it's a commitment.

  772. We want to commit to making strong men and women

  773. of God here because the future of the church not

  774. not extra, but just the kingdom realize on that. And

  775. you know a lot of times right when we sit down,

  776. we don't like of course, we catch up and it's

  777. not coaching or helping you make decisions even it's really

  778. just coaching or talking to you, hearing you are. Ultimately

  779. we are just like a word, better word, equipped you

  780. to then make the decisions in your life and hopefully

  781. you make the right decisions. All right. So again, as

  782. as the as their pastor, my job is in to

  783. make decisions for them, but it's to prepare them when

  784. they have to then make those decisions. Parents. You know

  785. this very well, right. Our goal is not to decisions

  786. for children forever, by is to shape them in such

  787. a way that they would be able to make godly

  788. decisions when it matters homeless leaders, same thing as well.

  789. Your goal is to mature them to be mature followers

  790. of Christ, not make decision for them, equip them. That's

  791. what discipleship is. I'm done, guys, I'm done. Can I

  792. ask you something? I'm gonna flash this last slide up

  793. on the screen. These are just some questions that I

  794. think you need to ask yourself as we close today. Otherwise, Yeah,

  795. run and around again. No transformation. First question, right, ask

  796. yourself this, Who in your life actually has permission to

  797. challenge your thinking? Human law? Don't say Jesus lave? Who

  798. can livingly tell you? I don't think there was a

  799. wise decision? Who can really ask you honestly? Ah, how's

  800. that relationship going, how's your marriage going? How's supurity? How's

  801. your prayer life? How's your walk with Jesus? If the

  802. answer is nobody's permission, perhaps you or I have been

  803. isolated for a while. And if you didn't catch that earlier,

  804. it's not God's plan. God didn't intend for us to

  805. make isolation. He walked with them for three me let

  806. me ask you another question, right, has anybody invested in

  807. your life? Or another way that are you investing in

  808. his life? Not just because you're a leader, or you're

  809. a pastor, or you are you are a Christian, You're

  810. already a believer, right, So who are you discipling? Is

  811. there somebody younger in faith that you can encourage, that

  812. you can pray with? Here? You got some teens here?

  813. You know, the parent is not the only one that

  814. can speaking to their life. You know, who are you

  815. meeting regularly, who are you walking alongside with? Remember not words?

  816. Are we want disciples? And if you didn't catch all

  817. that disciple makes disciples. So if you do not, yeah,

  818. I answer is no, then maybe it's something to revisit.

  819. And the final question what part of my thinking still

  820. needs to renewal? Which portion that you're wrestling with? If

  821. you can be really honest, right, all of us has

  822. something to put there in Remember I said earlier, information

  823. or knowledge will only remain there, You'll never leave transformation.

  824. So if there's something that even you are very knowledgeable

  825. in but you do not come to the point of transformation, yeah,

  826. something needs to happen, just as a reminder because discipleship

  827. begins you sentence meta noia all right, change of mind

  828. not change of emotion.

  829. We hope you've been blessed by this message. For more
