  77. everything and I just want to read it to you

  78. my father. He attended Andrew Junior High School and graduated

  79. from Westfield High School, where he played varsity football and

  80. community baseball.

  81. He continued his.

  82. Education at the following institution, Birmingham Baptist Bible College, where

  84. and Religion, and Gaston State Community College, New Era Baptist

  97. the Wills Creek District Association, where he served in several capacities.

  98. He was an intricate part of social, civic, civil rights,

  99. and community affairs of the city. In April of nineteen

  100. eighty four, he was called to Friendship Missionary Baptist Church

  101. and reached beyond the boundaries of his church and was

  102. the senior pastor until his death. He actively participated with

  103. Habitat for Humanity, starred at the Birmingham Baptist as Sonia

  114. my father's life and all the great things that he

  115. has done and what he did in his lifetime, I

  116. have to tell you the dream is still alive. And

  117. I think and I praised God for him, for his life,

  118. for his legacy, and for his testimony.

  119. Oh.

  120. When I look back over my life, I tell you

  121. I thank God that he gave me the parents that

  122. he gave me, who encouraged me to continue on with

  234. you can text the words welcome to four six nine

  235. eight seven six eight five five five.

  236. So today we're asking if you would join.

  237. Us in Matthew the sixteenth chapter, Verses thirteen through eighteen.

  238. Matthew sixteen versus thirteen through eighteen. Matthew sixteen Versus thirteen

  239. through eighteen. So if you have your Bible, flip over

  240. to Matthew, the first book in the New Testament. If

  241. you don't have a Bible, pull up a Bible lap

  242. like you version on your phone or your chaptain. Today's

  243. message is entitled built to Last. Built to Last, So

  244. Matthew the sixteenth chapter, verses thirteen through eighteen, and the

  245. ESV says, Now, when Jesus came into the district of

  246. Cesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, who do people say

  247. that the son of Man is? And they said, some

  248. say John the Baptists, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah

  249. are one of the prophets. And he said to them,

  250. but what do you say or who do you say

  251. that I am Simon? Peter replied, you are the Christ,

  252. the son of the Living God. And Jesus answered him,

  253. blessed are you, Simon barge On, a Simon, son of John.

  254. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,

  255. but my Father, who was in heaven, And I tell you.

  256. You are Peter.

  257. And on this rock I will build my church, and

  258. the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. Built

  259. to Last, Brothers and sisters, Today we stand on an

  260. unshakeable undeniable, unbreakable foundation of Jesus Christ. This text that

  261. we're looking at today is one of the most profound.

  262. Declarations in all of the New.

  263. Testament because it speaks of the power, permanence, and purpose

  264. of church. When Jesus said on this rock, I will

  265. build my church, he was not talking about a temporary shelter,

  266. a fragile structure, or a man made institution. No, he

  267. was talking about an indestructible, eternal, and victorious movement that

  268. would withstand every attack of the enemy.

  269. And I came to tell somebody.

  270. Today, what God builds all, the devil can't brave. On

  271. somebody ought to be able to say that what God

  272. builds all the.

  273. Devil cannot brave.

  274. So, first of all, in our text for today, we

  275. see the revelation.

  276. Before the foundation.

  277. Listen, Jesus makes the statement about Before Jesus makes the

  278. statement about building the church. First, he asked the question,

  279. who do people say the son of Man is?

  280. Who do people say that I had and the disciples?

  281. They replied, some are saying you're John the Baptist, that

  282. preacher of repentance.

  283. Ah.

  284. Some are saying you're Elijah, that prophet of miracles, and

  285. some are saying that you're Jeremiah, that prophet of lamentation.

  286. But then Jesus he flips the coin. He turns the

  287. question personal, and he asked his disciples, who do you,

  288. ah say that I am?

  289. And that's oh.

  290. That question is still being asked today by men and

  291. women throughout our world. Who is Jesus? So who do

  292. you say that I am? And Peter, out of the

  293. silence he answers, he said, you are the Christ, the

  294. son of the Living God. Oh, he answered correctly. And

  295. here's the first thing that we need to understand. The

  296. church is built on the right confession. Before there can

  297. be a foundation, there must be revelation.

  298. You can't build a strong church on week doctrine.

  299. You can't build a strong faith on false foundation.

  300. So Peter's confession.

  301. It shows us that if the church is going to

  302. stand ah, it must stand on Jesus and Jesus alone. Oh,

  303. Jesus is the foundation of the church.

  304. AH.

  305. But secondly, we see in our text for today, we

  306. see the rock that cannot be shaken, the rock that

  307. cannot be shaken.

  308. Peter respond on.

  309. Jesus responds to Peter and says, oh, hell, you, Peter,

  310. all this rock I will build my church. We see

  311. that in verse eighteen. Now let me let me clarify something.

  312. Jesus wasn't saying that Peter himself was the rock. All

  313. the word Peter petross in Greek it means small stone.

  314. But Jesus said, all this rock petra in Greek, which

  315. means a large rock.

  316. It means a large immovable found dason, like the clift

  317. of a rock.

  318. Oh what is that rock?

  319. That rock is the truth that Jesus is the Christ.

  320. All that that truth, that Jesus is the Christ, the.

  321. Son of the living God. All this is the same

  322. rock that David was talking about it Psalms eighteen and two,

  323. where he said the Lord is my rock, my fortress.

  324. And my deliverer.

  325. All same rock that the apostle Paul was talking about

  326. in First Corinthians ten four friends when he said.

  327. That rock was Christ.

  328. Ah.

  329. This tells me hallelujah that no matter what storms may come,

  330. when my life is built on Jesus, Oh it.

  331. Cannot be shaken.

  332. Oh.

  333. People may leave me, they may turn their backs on me,

  334. ministries may change. But when my life is built on Jesus,

  335. it's built to stand, Oh, hallelujah.

  336. Oh.

  337. Thirdly, we see in our text for today that the

  338. church we see, the church that cannot be defeated, All

  339. the Church that cannot be defeated.

  340. Jesus says in verse eighteen.

  341. Also, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

  342. The gates of Hell shall not prevail or overcome the Church. Now,

  343. let's break this down. Gates in the Bible symbolically always

  344. represented authority, all the gates of hell. They symbolize the

  345. power and strategy of our infernal enemy.

  346. The devil. But WA's this. Gates don't attack. Gates don't attack.

  347. Gates are defensive structures meant to defend houses and cities

  348. and regions. All gates are defensive structures, which means, Jesus

  349. it's saying that the Church is not on the defense, oh,

  350. but that we're on the offense. All the devil's been

  351. trying to stop the church all for over two thousand years,

  352. but the Church stills stands all. Persecution can't stop it,

  353. politics can't corrupt it, and pandemics can't kill it.

  354. All.

  355. Jesus guarantees that his church all that it will never

  356. be defeated, that means that we're not fighting for victory,

  357. but that we are fighting from the victory.

  358. Oh.

  359. But then, lastly, friends, we see in our text for

  360. the day, the builder who never fails, the builder who

  361. never fails. Because listen, Jesus says I will build my church.

  362. He says I will build my church. He didn't say

  363. that he was building Peter's church. He didn't say that

  364. he was building my church or your church. It's his church.

  365. And because his church, he's responsible for it. If Jesus

  366. is building it, then you better believe, my friends.

  367. Oh, it's built to last. Colin Willia, Oh, somebody all a.

  368. Shout right now, Because when God builds, he builds with purpose,

  369. no weapon fall againstant will prosper.

  370. But God starts, he finishes.

  371. Oh.

  372. He began a good work, and you and I he

  373. will complete it.

  374. Oh.

  375. If you're in Christ, you're not built to break. You

  376. are built to last. Listen, brothers and sisters, this is

  377. not the time to waiver because of what's going on

  378. in our world. This is not the time to doubt.

  379. This is not the time to retreat and tucktail.

  380. This is the time to stand on the ruck.

  381. Oh, when people attack your life, stand on the ruck

  382. when people walk away, Stand on the rock.

  383. When when life gets hard, stand on the rock.

  384. Because Jesus said, upon this rock I'll build my church,

  385. and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.

  386. All. The church is not just a building. It's the

  387. body of Christ. The Church is not just an organization.

  388. It's a living organism.

  389. And as long as we stand on Jesus, Oh, we

  390. will never be defeated. So I leave you with this question, Oh,

  391. what is your life built on?

  392. If it's built on Sheese, The winds may bow, all

  393. the waves may crash, all the trials may come, But where.

  394. The dust all settles, oh, you'll still be standing.

  395. Oh, somebody out of be able to shout a shout

  396. of prase all because we're built to last, Holly Lullian,

  397. we're built to last when our lives are founded on

  398. the solid rock of Jesus.

  399. There may be one here today.

  400. And you're saying, fast and Troy, I'm on shaky ground.

  401. I'm on unstable ground, and I need this this stuff,

  402. this solid rock that you're talking about. Well, the Bible

  403. says that we're all sinners, we're all messed up, we're

  404. all born on shaky ground, and we fall short of

  405. God's standard for living. Oh, but the the good thing

  406. is that to rob Jesus, he died for our sins.

  407. God commended his own love toward us, that while we

  408. were yet sinners, Christ died. The wages of sin is death,

  409. but the free gift of God is eternal life in

  410. Jesus Christ. And all we have to do confess Jesus's Lord.

  411. Believe in our hearts, that God raise them from the dead,

  412. and we hand we will be saved.

  413. All friends, everybody who.

  414. Calls on the name of the Lord shall be said,

  415. you might want to trust Jesus today. I'm gonna pray

  416. a prayer for salvation. If you want to pray with me. Oh,

  417. you can pray the words that I pray, and if

  418. you truly mean them, they can be your confession of

  419. the trust, the faith, the hope that you're willing to

  420. put in Jesus.

  421. Today.

  422. Bout with me today, friends, pray with me Lord Jesus.

  423. I just thank you, Thank you for dying for me.

  424. Thank you for paying the price and the penalty for

  425. my sins. I admit that I'm a sinner. I need forgiveness.

  426. I need you Jesus, I just pray that you would

  427. forgive me for my sins, come into my life and

  428. be my Lord and savior. Jesus, I confess you as

  429. Lord and savior right now. Thank you for forgiving me,

  430. thank you for saving me and coming into my life.

  431. Thank you for being my Lord and savior.

  456. able to do our service this morning and to celebrate

  457. the life and legacy of our co founder, my father,

  458. the late Great Reverend Doctor J. E. Meriwether Senior, as

  459. well as celebrate my mother, Lady Betty Rose at Morris Merriweather.

  460. I thank God for them. I tell you, I had

  461. a moment here when I just had to cry when

  462. I think about how wonderful they are are, they were,

  463. and how instrumental in establishing Merriweather Bible Institute, Meriweather Global Ministries,

  464. Meriwether Global Outreach, all of the different things that we do.

  465. Tabernacle of Praise Church Reverend te Meriweather, and House of Prayer.

  466. They're in Dallas. For those that partner with us around

  467. the world. We just celebrate on today. We're not just

  468. giving glory to a man, but we're giving glory and

  469. praise to God for us sharing that vision, my dad

  470. and I and for all these years later to see

  471. that it's still going on in the name of the

  472. Lord Is there anything you want to say? Pastor, I'm

  473. going to close out with for every mountain, but.

  474. I thank everyone that tuned in.

  479. Just want to say that doctor J.

  480. Merriweather and Lady Betty Betty Grogs that were Merriwether, they

  481. weren't just people who loved the Lord and just worked

  482. hard in the vineyard, worked hard in building the kingdom.

  483. But they were just good loving people, just good loving people.

  484. And you know, just thank God for just being able

  485. to know them, you know, and know the type of

  486. people that they were up close and personal. So I

  487. just thank God for just the benefit of being able

  488. to know them and just clean from their lives.

  489. Amen.

  490. Amen, Amen, never knowing when you met them all those

  491. years ago when you came home when you were in college,

  492. then oh my goodness, over twenty some years later that

  493. you would, you know, with thirty some years later you

  494. would marry their daughter.

  495. And so just look how God works.

  497. brother praise the Lord when you guys came home from

  498. Visual College out there with the lyceum to preach erin Annison, Alabama.

  499. And so I'm so grateful and thankful for that time.

  500. But see, God knows from afar off how things will be.

  501. We only see that moment, but God knows what's coming.
